- Abstract
The practical application of biomass gasification in Lithuania is not known. For many years, the scientists from Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI) have been working in the field of biomass and other waste material gasification, leading to the development of scrap tire gasification technology, research of gasification and combustion of solid organic waste and glycerol and catalytic removal of tar compound from producer gas produced by biomass gasification, as well as developed and introduced for widespread application in industry the equipment for liquid and gaseous fuel combustion. The available experience facilitated the development of technology for biomass and waste material gasification whose main feature is to produce gas by biomass gasification for application in process technologies. This article reviews the research carried out in the Laboratory of Combustion Processes at LEI for the last ten years and the main results of experimental research in gasification of various types of biomass and waste material. As an output of these activities, the prototype equipment was developed for gasification of intact scrap tires and pelletized biomass and waste material, including dried wastewater treatment sludge. Novel scientific knowledge was acquired about the composition of producer gas, its calorific value and physical properties. The features and optimum conditions have been identified for gasification of biomass and waste material in the developed prototypes leading to the generation of the most calorific gas. Design and control properties were identified, and proposals were drawn up for more powerful equipment. Proposals for further enhancements of the equipment were outlined. The article also estimates the present situation and prospects of gasification technologies in Lithuania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
