Abstract

The article focuses on sewage disposal plants in the United States. As nutrient limits tighten, municipalities are searching for inexpensive compliance options. And because existing plants often have little space for expansion or have reserved that space for future capacity increases, they are drawn to processes that have smaller footprints, take advantage of existing infrastructure, or modify existing treatment processes. That is why the integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process is attractive. The IFAS process combines fixed and suspended biological growth in one reactor by adding fixed or suspended media to an existing activated sludge basin. The suspended growth continues to behave like a conventional activated sludge process, while the fixed growth on the added media effectively increases sludge age, so complete nitrification can occur. The fixed growth remains in the reactor, so solids loading on the final clarifiers are not increased. Many utilities in the U.S. need to upgrade their existing wastewater treatment facilities to add nitrification.
