Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is recognized as a global threat. AMR bacteria accumulate in sewage sludge however, knowledge on the persistence of human pathogens and AMR in the sludge line of the wastewater treatment is limited. Sludge can be used, with or without additional treatment, as fertilizer in agricultural fields. The aim of this study is to obtain knowledge about presence of human pathogens and AMR in the sewage sludge, before and after the anaerobic digestion (AD) applying innovative combinations of methods. Fifty sludge samples were collected. Cultivation methods combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and Antibiotic Susceptibility Test (AST) were used obtaining knowledge about the microbial community, pathogens, and antibiotic resistant bacteria while the droplet digital Polymerase Chain Reaction (ddPCR) was performed to detect most common AMR genes. In total, 231 different bacterial species were identified in the samples. The most abundant species were spore-forming facultative anaerobic bacteria belonging to Bacillus and Clostridium genera. The AD causes a shift in the microbial composition of the sludge (p = 0.04). Seven pathogenic bacterial species constituting 188 colonies were isolated and tested for susceptibility to Clindamycin, Meropenem, Norfloxacin, Penicillin G, and Tigecycline. Of the Clostridium perfringens and Bacillus cereus isolates 67 and 50 %, respectively, were resistant to Clindamycin. Two B. cereus and two C. perfringens isolates were also resistant to other antibiotics showing multidrug resistance. ARGs (bla OXA , bla TEM , ermB, qnrB, tet(A)-(W), sulI-II) were present at 7-8 Log gene copies/kg of sludge. AD is the main driver of a reduction of some ARGs (1 Log) but resistant bacteria were still present. Mitigating the environmental impact of composting by the reduction of greenhouse gases (N 2 O, CH 4 ) and ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions is a major challenge. To meet this challenge, the understanding of the relationships between composted substrates initial physicochemical parameters and gas emissions is essential. From a long-term perspective, it will allow to guide the recipe formulation of the initial mixture to be composted, with a view to reducing gas emissions during composting. This study gathered literature data targeting sewage sludge composting and performed statistical correlation analyses between cumulative gas emissions and the following parameters: sewage sludge, bulking agent and composted mixture initial physicochemical parameters (pH, dry matter, total carbon, total nitrogen, C/N), the dry mass ratio of sewage sludge to bulking agent and the duration of composting. The average values of cumulative emissions show a large variability: 1.37 ± 2.71 gC.kg initial mix DM -1 , 0.13 ± 0.17 gN.kg initial mix DM -1 and 2.23 ± 2.79 gN.kg initial mix DM -1 for CH 4 , N 2 O and NH 3 emissions respectively. Although the correlation analysis highlighted some significant interesting correlations between initial physicochemical parameters and gas emissions (p.value < 0.05), reliable multiparametric model could not fit the data, meaning that the actual literature data are not sufficient to explain most part of gas emissions. Among the most interesting relationships, the study showed that the dry matter of the composted mixture is negatively correlated to N 2 O emissions, while the ratio of sewage sludge to bulking agent and the duration of composting are positively correlated to N 2 O emissions. It was also shown that the pH of the bulking agent is positively correlated to NH 3 emissions. Considering the large part of the emission variability that is not explained and the difficulty to link the correlation with their causality, it will be interesting to improve composting gas emissions knowledge in future research by analyzing free air space, bulking agent adsorption capacity and available and biodegradable organic matter. These parameters are of particular interest in solving the main problems associated with sewage sludge composting, namely porosity and nitrogen retention. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising method for municipal sludge valorization through waste minimization and biofuel production. The process wastewater, HTL aqueous, presents a significant challenge for scale-up due to recalcitrant compounds. In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) was used to remove potential inhibitors from HTL aqueous through adsorption to enhance aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment. GAC removed up to 61 % chemical oxygen demand (COD), 50 % biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and potential inhibitors, such as total phenolic compounds (87 %) and N-heterocycles (90 % of pyridines) at 100 g/L. Conversely, most volatile fatty acids remained in HTL aqueous. Subsequently, mesophilic and thermophilic specific methane potential increased by up to 97 % and 83 %, respectively. BOD increased by up to 50 %, which enhanced BOD/COD ratio from 81 % to 93 % before and after adsorption. The disposal and resource utilization of sewage sludge (SS) have always been significant challenges for environmental protection. This study employed straightforward pyrolysis to prepare iron-containing sludge biochar (SBC) used as a catalyst and to recover bio-oil used as fuel energy. The results indicated that SBC-700 could effectively activate persulfate (PS) to remove 97.2% of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) within 60 min. Benefiting from the appropriate iron content, oxygen-containing functional groups and defective structures provide abundant active sites. Meanwhile, SBC-700 exhibits good stability and reusability in cyclic tests and can be easily recovered by magnetic separation. The role of non-radicals is emphasized in the SBC-700/PS system, and in particular, single linear oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is proposed to be the dominant reactive oxygen. The bio-oil, a byproduct of pyrolysis, exhibits a higher heating value (HHV) of about 30 MJ/kg, with H/C and O/C ratios comparable to those of biodiesel. The energy recovery rate of the SS pyrolysis system was calculated at 80.5% with a lower input cost. Because of the naturally limited anaerobic degradability and limited biogas yield of raw sludge (RS), this study aims to increase the biogas production of primary sludge (PS) and waste activated sludge (WAS) by the integration of thermal alkaline process (TAP). PH 11 is confirmed to be the most suitable pH value for the TAP of both sludges. Moreover, with the pretreatment at pH 11 and 160 °C (6 bar) for 30 min, the investigated PSs and WASs achieved an increased biogas production of up to 81 % and 72 %, respectively. The improved net electricity production of WASs after TAP varied between 15-43 % compared to conventional WAS digestion. Existing phosphorus (P) resources are becoming increasingly scarce, so it is necessary to recover P from potential sources. This paper is based on thermal hydrolysis process (THP) at 140-180 °C, coupled with low-temperature pyrolysis at 300 °C, to study its effect on the recovery and conversion of P from sewage sludge. Most significant change was observed in apatite P, which increased from 3.43 ± 0.48 mg/g in raw sludge to 30.17 ± 1.17 mg/g in biochar (BTHP-180-4-300) during optimal process (THP condition: 180 °C, 4 h; pyrolysis condition: 300 °C). Reactions between phosphates and metal ions became more complete during this combined process. Unstable forms of P were converted into more stable forms, with transformations from Al-P and Fe-P toward Ca-P compounds like Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , Ca 3 Mg 3 (PO 4 ) 4 , Ca 2 P 2 O 7 , and Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 , making P less degradable and more suitable as slow-release fertilizers. Considering the high organic matter contents and pollutants in sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW), seeking green and effective technology for energy recovery and pollutant control is a big challenge. In this study, we proposed a integrated technology combing SS mass separation by hydrothermal pretreatment, methane production from co-digestion of hydrothermally treated sewage sludge (HSS) centrate and FW, and biochar production from co-pyrolysis of HSS cake and digestate with heavy metal immobilization for synergistic utilization of SS and FW. The results showed that the co-digestion of HSS centrate with FW reduced the NH 4 + -N concentration and promoted volatile fatty acids conversion, leading to a more robust anaerobic system for better methane generation. Among the co-pyrolysis of HSS cake and digestate, digestate addition improved biochar quality with heavy metals immobilization and toxicity reduction. Following the lab-scale investigation, the pilot-scale verification was successfully performed (except the co-digestion process). The mass and energy balance revealed that the produced methane could supply the whole energy consumption of the integrated system with 26.2 t biochar generation for treating 300 t SS and 120 t FW. The hydrodynamic disintegration process depends, among others, on operational parameters like rotational speed or introduced energy. The study presents an interdisciplinary approach to the hydrodynamic disintegration parameters impact assessment on the internal processes and disintegration effects on the example of sewage sludge treatment. Three rotational speeds were considered, including fluid properties change at selected disintegration stages. Disintegration effects were measured in the bench tests. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) were measured before and after disintegration process. The assessment of the effects of disintegration employed the disintegration degree and the assessment of the course of methane production employed biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests. Fluid properties change during the disintegration stages does not cause a significant change in the flow structure. Due to the mathematical modelling results, at 1500 rpm no cavitation phenomenon was observed. Although, the bench tests results indicates, for the rotational speed 1500 rpm, organic compounds released to the liquid were characterised by higher susceptibility to biological decomposition than those released for 2500 and 3000 rpm (as suggested by the low SCOD/VFA values for 1500 rpm). The use of composted sludge from sewage treatment plants as a soil amendment is a common practice of recycling nutrients like organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The sewage generated in larger cities of developing countries is often contaminated with various heavy metals (HMs) that ultimately end up in composted sludge. Thus, using such composted sludge is likely to pose ecological and human health risks. Hence, the knowledge of HM translocation in sludge-soil-plant systems is of vital importance. The present study was aimed at investigating the HM translocation in sludge-soil-plant system. The HM translocation was measured using synchrotron radiation-induced x-ray fluorescence spectrometry and atomic absorption spectroscopic techniques. The results indicated high HM mobility (up to 2628.5 mg kg -1 ) from sludge to spinach plant. The metal accumulation (mg kg -1 ) ranged in the order-Fe (950.55-2628.5) > Zn (20.11-172.13) > Cu (13.86-136.17) > Mn (2.13-34.67) > Cd (0.11-31.17) > Pb (1.50-30.16) > Co (0.18-9.85) As (0.02-7.80) > Cr (0.01-5.69). This observed accumulation depended on the volume of sewage being treated in the sewage treatment plant (STP) and varied in the order control < (8 MLD Bhagwanpur, STP 1) < (80 MLD Dinapur, STP2) < (140 MLD Dinapur, STP3) hence the HM load coming into STPs. The metal transfer factor, bioconcentration factor, and translocation factor values also correlated with the abundance of Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Zn in spinach root and shoot compartments. The carcinogenic risk for heavy metal carcinogens like As, Cd, Cr, and Pb revealed children being more prone to cancer upon spinach consumption. This study evaluates the sustainability of spreading wastewater or sewage sludge on agricultural land, balancing benefits with contamination risks. Conventional ecological risk indices often fail to address the long-term accumulation of metals in soils. We investigate the feasibility of spreading based on current knowledge of potentially contaminating metals and their behavior in soil. We analyzed the speciation of metals (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Ti, Zn) through sequential extraction in sludge, treated wastewater, and soils after 14 years of application of sewage sludge and treated wastewater issued from an Algerian wastewater treatment plant. We introduce a Time to Critical Content Index (TCCI) that calculates the time required to reach critical levels of potentially mobile metals, considering total metal content and speciation. The TCCI takes into account product knowledge, soil characteristics, metal behavior, ecological/toxicological thresholds, and regulations. Applied to our case study, the TCCI indicates that spreading sewage sludge can continue despite metal contents exceeding regulatory ceiling values. The reutilization of municipal wastes has always been one of the hottest subjects of sustainable development study. In this study, a novel biochar co-pyrolyzed from municipal sewage sludge and phosphorus tailings was produced to enhance the adsorption performance of the composite on Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ . The maximum Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ adsorption capacity of SSB-PT were 44.34 and 45.91 mg/g, respectively, which were much higher than that of sewage sludge biochar (5.21 and 4.58 mg/g). Chemisorption dominated the whole adsorption process while multilayer adsorption and indirect interaction were also involved. According to the result of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), the load of CO 3 2- , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ on the surface of SSB-PT enhanced the precipitation and ion exchange effect. Posnjakite and CdCO 3 were formed after the adsorption of Cu 2+ , respectively. Besides, complexation, and metal-π interaction were also involved during the adsorption process. Therefore, this study offered a promising method to reuse sewage sludge and phosphorus tailings as an effective adsorbent.2+ , respectively. The addition of composite conductive materials is being increasingly recognized as a promising strategy to enhance anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. However, the influence of these materials on protein hydrolysis has been poorly documented. Here, a novel magnetic biochar derived from oil sludge and straw was synthesized using different iron sources and successfully applied in sludge AD. Experimental results revealed that magnetic biochar modified by Fe 2+ exhibited excellent electron transfer capacity, moderate magnetization, diverse functional groups (e.g. C=O, C-O=O-), and abundant iron distribution. These characteristics significantly enhanced the hydrolysis of tryptophan-like components, leading to increased methane production (144.44 mL gVS -1 vs 79.72 mL gVS -1 in the control test). Molecular docking analysis revealed that the binding of magnetic biochar related Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ , onto sludge proteins via hydrogen bond played a key role in promoting subsequent protein hydrolysis. Additionally, the noteworthy conservation of protein structures from α-helix and β-sheet to random coil, along with the breakdown of the amide I-associated C=O group and amide III-related CN and NH bonds following the addition of magnetic biochar, accelerated the degradation of sludge protein. Observation of variations in protease activity, coenzyme F420, electron transfer system (ETS), and conductivity within the AD systems, particularly the enrichment of Methanospirillum and Methanosaeta archaea, as well as the Petrimonas, Comamonas, and Syntrophomonas bacteria, suggested that magnetic biochar facilitated a conducive environment by improving hydrolysis-acidification and the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) process for acetoclastic methanogens. Moreover, metabolic pathways further proved that tryptophan metobalism and acetoclastic methanogenesis were both facilitated by magnetic biochar. Application of sewage sludge as fertilizer can be beneficial for sustainable agriculture as it could largely account for nitrogen and phosphorus demand for crops and has lower costs compared to other disposal routes, e.g., incineration, and sanitary landfills. This study evaluates the feasibility of pilot-scale pelletization of sewage sludge for non-food crops (e.g., ornamental plants). The co-pelletization method was designed by mixing sewage sludge and binder (tapioca starch) at a 9:1 sludge-to-starch weight ratio. The amount of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) of the resultant pellets were determined at 5.7%, 4.9%, and 0.2%, respectively. Following Malaysian and US Standards, non-essential elements and pathogenicity of the pelletized sewage sludge were measured below the predetermined limits and hence safe for agricultural application. The planting trial using 50% inorganic fertilizer + 50% sewage sludge pellets exhibited a promising result on the growth of the flowering plant Celosia plumosa, with having better dimension and color, 20% higher in height, 4% more chlorophyll content, 54% more leaf, 43% greater stem growth, and 27% more flowers compared to control. Likewise, the planting trial on Tagetes erecta resulted in 10.5% wider leaf, 10.6% heavier leaf dry weight, and 12.5% more chlorophyll content compared to control with full usage of inorganic fertilizer. Despite some effectiveness of wastewater treatment processes, microplastics accumulate in sewage sludge and their further use may contribute to the release of plastic microplastics into the environment. There is an urgent need to reduce the amount of microplastics in sewage sludge. Plastic particles serve as solid substrates for various microorganisms, promoting the formation of microbial biofilms with different metabolic activities. The biofilm environment associated with microplastics will determine the efficiency of treatment processes, especially biological methods, and the mechanisms of organic compound conversion. A significant source of microplastics is the land application of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. The detrimental impact of microplastics affects soil enzymatic activity, soil microorganisms, flora, fauna, and plant production. This review article summarizes the development of research related to microplastics and discusses the issue of microplastic introduction from sewage sludge. Given that microplastics can contain complex composite polymers and form a plastisphere, further research is needed to understand their potential environmental impact, pathogenicity, and the characteristics of biofilms in wastewater treatment systems. The article also discusses the physicochemical properties of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants and their role in biofilm formation. Then, the article explained the impact of these properties on the possibility of the formation of biofilms on their surface due to the peculiar structure of microorganisms and also characterized what factors enable the formation of specific plastisphere in wastewater treatment plants. It highlights the urgent need to understand the basic information about microplastics to assess environmental toxicity more rationally, enabling better pollution control and the development of regulatory standards to manage microplastics entering the environment., (© 2024. Sewage sludge (SS) is a potential source of bioenergy, yet its management is a global concern. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is applied to effectively valorize SS by reclaiming energy in the form of methane. However, the complex floc structure of SS hinders hydrolysis during AD process, thus resulting in lower process efficiency. To overcome the rate-limiting hydrolysis, various pre-treatment methods have been developed to enhance AD efficiency. This review aims to provide insights into recent advancements in pre-treatment technologies, including mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological methods. Each technology was critically evaluated and compared, and its relative worth was summarized based on full-scale applicability, along with economic benefits, AD performance improvements, and impact on digested sludge. The pH of sewage sludge is a crucial factor during the hydrothermal carbonization process that influences the characteristics of the resulting products and migration of certain compounds from the solid to liquid phase. Accordingly, this work is focused on examining the pH impact during the HTC process, in particular, pH equals 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 on the individual hydrothermally carbonized products generated at 200 °C and 2 h residence time. For this reason, the chemical and physical indicators describing the post-processing liquid and hydrochar were determined. For instance, it was observed that the phosphorus content detected in the liquid, derived at pH2, rose significantly by 80%. Furthermore, decreasing the pH of sewage sludge had a significant impact on the ash content and the calorific value of the hydrochar. Additionally, changes in the specific surface area of hydrochar were noticed: pH = 5 and pH = 6 showed an increase of 20-30%, while for lower pH values a decrease of c.a. 26% was achieved. The distribution of heavy metals between the obtained fractions in the HTC process (solid and liquid) indicated that 92 to almost 100% of the tested heavy metals were transferred to the hydrochar. A significant effect of pH on the distribution between these fractions was observed only for Zn and Ni. For instance, for pH = 2, Zn and Ni in post-processing liquid were 34% and 29%, respectively. In addition, the sequential extraction of heavy metals from hydrochar was also performed in order to identify mobile and non-mobile phases. It was noticed that the acidic environment favours a higher amount of mobile heavy metals in hydrochar. Phosphotungstic acid (HPW) and silicotungstic acid (HSiW) were tested as homogeneous and as heterogeneous catalysts (after immobilized on different supports as high surface area graphite -HSAG500-, montmorillonite -MMT- and alumina -Al 2 O 3 -) for the in situ transesterification of sewage sludge lipids. Both catalysts exhibited similar performance in homogeneous phase, with slightly higher biodiesel yield for HPW. When the different supports were tested with HPW, the maximum yield obtained follow the trend: MMT > HSAG500 > Al 2 O 3 , but a greater leaching of the heteropolyacid (HPA) was observed with MMT. Therefore, HSAG500 showed the best results with a good FAMEs profile. The percentage of active phase was optimized from 1 to 40%, reaching the optimum at 10%. A more heterogeneous surface is obtained with larger quantities, also favouring the HPA leaching. The reaction temperature and the use of sonication as pre-treatment were also optimized. The best results were obtained after sonication with HPW-HSAG500 (10%) as catalyst, catalyst/sludge ratio 1:2, MeOH/sludge ratio 33:1, 120 °C and 21 h of reaction time with a maximum biodiesel yield of 31.1 % (FAMEs/lipids). While pre-drying of sewage sludge prior to hydrothermal carbonization is rarely practiced, various pre-drying methods have been performed in literature at lab-scale for convenient solid-to-liquid ratio adjustment. This has created a barrier for comparing hydrochar quality between different studies. Given pre-drying can destroy the floc structure of sewage sludge, we hypothesize that pre-drying may promote the hydrolysis step during hydrothermal carbonization process, resulting in improved hydrochar quality with low nitrogen content. In the current study, the influence of different pre-drying methods (freeze-dry, air-dry and vacuum-dry at 70 °C and 105 °C) on the subsequent hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge at 220 °C was assessed in terms of sewage sludge and hydrochar's chemical composition, fuel properties, pyrolysis and combustion behavior, as well as the characterization of the liquid phase. The results indicate that although pre-drying impacts sewage sludge's chemical composition, pyrolysis and combustion behavior, no significant differences exist in the yield, chemical composition, fuel properties, and pyrolysis and combustion behavior of the hydrochar. Capturing the carbon in volatile fatty acids (VFA) produced from the anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge has the potential to not only provide economic benefits but also reduce greenhouse gas production. This study demonstrates a chemical-free method to collect VFA from an AD instead of methane that involves electrochemical pretreatment (EPT) of sludge. Experimental results show that applying 15 V EPT for 45 min enhances acidogenesis and selectively inhibits methanogenesis, leading to a substantial VFA accumulation (2563.1 ± 307.9 mg COD/L) and achieving 2.5 times more carbon fixation than via methane production. Interfacial thermodynamic analysis shows that EPT induces a decrease in both the repulsive electrostatic energy (from 152.9 kT to 12.2 kT) and the energy barrier (from 57.0 kT to 2.6 kT) in the sludge, leading to increased sludge aggregation and entrapment of microorganisms. Molecular docking sheds lights on how the methanogens interacts with the organic matter released from EPT (e.g., alanine-tRNA ligase), showing that these interactions potentially interfere with the proteins that are associated with the activities of the methanogens and the electron transfer pathways, thereby impeding methanogenesis. As a new technology for accurate utilization of sludge resources, sludge inorganic-organic matter separation (IOMS) has attracted wide attention. This study examined the impact of this pretreatment on environmental and economic performance of sludge composting and incineration using life cycle assessment (LCA) and whole life costing (WLC). LCA results indicated that IOMS pretreatment reduced the energy conservation and emission reduction (ECER) values of composting and incineration by 56 % and 76 %, respectively. Meanwhile, WLC exhibited that IOMS pretreatment could cut the break-even year of incineration from 11 years to 4 years. The combination of organic sludge incineration/composting with inorganic sludge sintering ceramsite reveals excellent environmental and economic performance. Electro-fermentation (EF) was combined with anaerobic fermentation (AF) to promote medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) from sewage sludge. Results showed that EF at acidification process significantly increased short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production of by 0.5 times (82.4 mmol C/L). AF facilitated the chain elongation (CE) process by enhancing the SCFA conversion. Combined EF at acidification and AF at CE (EF-AF) achieved the highest MCFA production of 27.9 mmol C/L, which was 20 %-866 % higher than the other groups. Electrochemical analyses showed that enhanced SCFA and MCFA production was accompanied with good electrochemical performance at acidification and CE. Microbial analyses showed that EF-AF promoted MCFA production by enriching electrochemically active bacteria (EAB, Bacillus sp.). Enzyme analyses indicated that EF-AF promoted MCFA production by enriching the functional enzymes involved in Acetyl-CoA formation and the fatty acid biosynthesis (FAB) pathway. The organic matter molecular mechanism by which combined hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC) of municipal sludge (MS) and agricultural wastes (rice husk, spent mushroom substrate, and wheat straw) reduces the inhibitory effects of aqueous phase (AP) products on pak choi (Brassica campestris L.) growth compared to HTC of MS alone is not clear. Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was used to characterize the differences in organic matter at the molecular level between AP from MS HTC alone (AP-MS) and AP from co-HTC of MS and agricultural waste (co-Aps). The results showed that N-bearing molecules of AP-MS and co-Aps account for 70.6 % and 54.2 %-64.1 % of all molecules, respectively. Lignins were present in the highest proportion (56.3 %-78.5 %) in all APs, followed by proteins and lipids. The dry weight of co-APs hydroponically grown pak choi was 31.6 %-47.6 % higher than that of the AP-MS. Molecules that were poorly saturated and with low aromaticity were preferentially consumed during hydroponic treatment. Molecules present before and after hydroponics were defined as resistant molecules; molecules present before hydroponics but absent after hydroponics were defined as removed molecules; and molecules absent before hydroponics but present after hydroponics were defined as produced molecules. Large lignin molecules were broken down into more unsaturated molecules, but lignins were the most commonly resistant, removed, and produced molecules. Correlation analysis revealed that N- or S-bearing molecules were phytotoxic in the AP. Tannins positively influenced the growth of pak choi. Stabilizing heavy metals (HMs) in sewage sludge is urgently needed to facilitate its recycling and reuse. Pyrolysis stands out as a promising method for not only stabilizing these metals but also producing biochar. Our research delves into the migration and transformation of specific HMs (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) during co-pyrolysis under various conditions, including the presence and absence of microplastics (PVC and PET). We examined different concentrations of these plastics (1 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 %) and temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C). Findings reveal that microplastics, particularly PVC, enhance the migration of Zn and Mn, leading to significant volatilization of Zn and Pb at higher temperatures, peaking at 700 °C. The increase in temperature also markedly influences HM migration, with As showcasing notable loss rates that climbed by 18.0 % and 16.3 % in systems with PET and PVC, respectively, as temperatures soared from 300 °C to 700 °C. Moreover, our speciation analysis indicates that microplastics aid in transforming certain HMs from unstable to more stable forms, suggesting their beneficial role in HM stabilization during pyrolysis. The nitrogen transformation during sludge pyrolysis is affected by the dewater conditioner. However, the comparative analysis of the conditioner under identical pyrolysis conditions has been previously absent. In this study, Ca-, Fe- and Al-based conditioners were selected as the representatives. A comprehensive evaluation considering the cost of the conditioners and the product characteristics was conducted. Additionally, the in-situ fixation mechanism of the conditioner on nitrogen-containing gas was concurrently revealed. Among the six conditioners, CaO and AlCl 3 were identified as the top performers, ranking first and second, respectively. Furthermore, Fe/Ca-based conditioners reduced NH 3 and HCN release by 1.5 ∼ 5.53 % and 0 ∼ 1.55 %, respectively, by facilitating the conversion of amine-N to a more stable form in condensable fraction. Fe promoted volatile amine-N cyclization, while Ca encouraged its dehydrogenation. Both Fe/Ca-based conditioners increased 7.5 ∼ 14.8 % nitrogen retention in char, by inhibiting the decomposition of protein-N. Al-based conditioners had little effect on NH 3 and HCN, but contributed to 2.3 ∼ 2.8 % production of stabilized nitrogen in char. The introduction of Cl in Fe/Ca/Al chloride conditioners would promote the decomposition of inorganic ammonium salts to produce NH 3 at 30 ∼ 185 °C. And Cl also reacted with volatiles through electrophilic substitution reaction, leading to the formation of halogenated hydrocarbons in condensable fraction and the release of more NH 3 , HCN, and HNCO at 30 ∼ 465 °C. The findings of this study provide a detailed comparative analysis of various conditioners under uniform conditions and reveal the in-situ fixation mechanism of nitrogen-containing gas. The CO 2 addition could promote anaerobic digestion, but the exploration on bioconversion mechanisms of exogenous CO 2 in high-solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) system is still insufficient. This study investigated the performance of a CO 2 -added HSAD treating co-substrates of sewage sludge and food waste (FW). The maximum methane yield of 623.4 mL CH 4 /g-VS removed was obtained with FW proportion of 75 %, organic loading of 3.7 g-VS/L/d and intermittent stirring. The CO 2 addition could improve the methane yield by 11.8 % under the optimized conditions. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the most energetically favorable reaction for CH 4 production was acetoclastic methanogenesis (AM), and the main bioconversion pathway of exogenous CO 2 was homoacetogenesis (HA). Significantly higher methanogenic activity was achieved with CO 2 addition during acetate decomposition testing, suggesting enhanced AM pathway. The AM methanogens Methanosaeta were also enriched. Storage tank (ST) is a promising strategy for solid-liquid separation following anaerobic digestion (AD). However, little is known regarding the effects of ST on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial communities. Therefore, this study first investigated eight typical ARGs (sul1, sul2, tetW, tetA, tetO, tetX, ermF, and ermB) and three MGEs (int1, int2, and tnpA) during full-scale AD of sludge and the liquid and biosolids phases of ST. Following that, intracellular ARGs (iARGs), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)-associated ARGs, and cell-free ARGs removal were quantified in AD process, which is largely unknown for full-scale AD of sludge. The qPCR results showed that both AD and ST significantly removed ARGs, with ST biosolids showing the highest removal efficiency for the total measured relative (82.27 ± 2.09 %) and absolute (92.38 ± 0.89 %) abundance of ARGs compared to the raw sludge. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Firmicutes and Campilobacterota were the main potential ARGs hosts in the sludge. Moreover, the results of different ARGs fractions showed that the total relative and absolute abundance of iARGs decreased by 90.12 ± 0.83 % and 79.89 ± 1.41 %, respectively, following AD. The same trend was observed for the abundance of EPS-associated ARGs, while those of cell-free ARGs increased after AD. Composting is widely applied in recycling ever-increasing sewage sludge. However, the insufficient elimination of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in conventional compost fertilizer poses considerable threat to agriculture safety and human health. Here we investigated the efficacy and potential mechanisms in the removal of antibiotics and ARGs from sludge in hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) plant. Our results demonstrated that the HTC product was of high maturity. HTC led to complete elimination of antibiotics and potential pathogens, as well as removal of 98.8 % of ARGs and 88.1 % of mobile genetic elements (MGEs). The enrichment of antibiotic-degrading candidates and related metabolic functions during HTC suggested that biodegradation played a crucial role in antibiotic removal. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed that the reduction of ARGs was attributed to the decline of ARG-associated bacteria, mainly due to the high-temperature selection. Sewage sludge (SS) is commonly used as agricultural fertilizer worldwide. However, the toxic metal(loid)s in SS raises concerns about soil contamination and the potential risks to human health. This study, conducted since 2007 on the North China Plain, examines the impact of SS use on crops. An experiment was designed with five treatments: conventional fertilization (CK) and four levels of SS application (W1, W2, W3, and W4: 4.5, 9.0, 18.0, and 36.0 t ha -1 , respectively). Soil concentrations of eight toxic metal(loid)s (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, As, and Hg) were analyzed to assess pollution risk using various indices. Health risks associated with maize and wheat grains were also evaluated. Additionally, the impact of long-term SS application on crop yield, soil quality, and human health within a wheat-maize rotation system was examined. SS application increased wheat and maize yields by 5.37 to 19.08 % and 6.97 to 17.94 %, respectively, across treatments W2 to W4. Despite the toxic metal(loid)s in the grains remaining within safe limits, their concentrations showed an upward trend, especially under the W4 treatment. Moreover, SS application significantly increased the soil Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Hg levels (P < 0.05) without exceeding the national standards. The geo-accumulation index values revealed rising pollution levels for Zn, Cu, Cd, and Hg, which shifted from no contamination to moderate contamination and then to moderate-to-high contamination, yet the overall pollution level remained safe. Soil ecological risks increased from moderate to serious, with Hg posing the greatest risk, particularly under the W4 treatment. Long-term crop intake from the area significantly exposed children and adults to As, contributing 42.12 % and 34.62 % to hazard index (HI), respectively. The environmental risks of migration of heavy metals (HMs) following applications of sewage sludge (SS) to forest soils are garnering increased attention. Plant litter at the forest floor may modify HM migration pathways through impacts on soil aggregates and water/soil erosion; however, HM migration responses to plant litter are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of plant litter cover on HMs migration, and water and soil erosion following the application of SS to subtropical forest soils. Effects of addition of SS along and SS plus plant litter at 0.75 or 1.5 kg m -2 on the migration of cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, and zinc in surface runoff, soil interflow, and sediments were quantified across nine simulated rainfall events in a laboratory experiment and following natural intense rain events in a field experiment. Addition of SS elevated HM concentrations in surface runoff by 38.7 to 98.5 %, in soil interflow by 48.3 to 312.5 %, and in sediment by 28.5 to 149.4 %, and increased the production of sediment aggregates <0.05 mm that led to greater cumulative migrations of HMs in surface runoff and sediment; sediment accounted for 89.5 % of HM migrations. Addition of plant litter reduced cumulative migration of HMs by 87.1-97.27 %; however, the higher rate of plant litter led to a decrease in surface runoff and sediment yield, and an increase in soil interflow. Addition of plant litter shifted the main pathway of HM migration from sediment to surface runoff and soil interflow. The potential ecological HM risk index was "low" for each treatment. We found consistency in HM concentrations and migrations via surface runoff between the field and laboratory experiments. The use of sewage sludge as a soil improver has been promoted in agroecosystems. However, sludges can contain toxic trace elements because of suboptimal wastewater treatment. Nonetheless, field studies investigating the negative effects of these practices on pollinators are lacking. We collected honeybees from an area where sewage sludge use is widespread, and one where it is precluded. Trace elements in soils and bees were quantified. Cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and nickel were investigated because they were the least correlated elements to each other and are known to be toxic. Their levels were related to oxidative stress and energy biomarkers, midgut epithelial health, body size and wing asymmetry of honeybees. We found increased carbohydrate content in sites with higher cadmium levels, increased histological damage to the midgut epithelium in the sewage sludge area, and the presence of dark spherites in the epithelium of bees collected from the sites with the highest lead levels. Finally, we found that honeybees with the highest lead content were smaller, and that wing fluctuating asymmetry increased in sites with increasing levels of mercury. The effect of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) on the electron transfer process in aerobic composting systems remains unexplored. In this study, we compared the electron transfer characteristics of DOM in sludge composting without additives (group CK) and with the addition of 50 mg/kg Fe 3 O 4 NPs additive (group Fe). It was demonstrated that the electron transfer capacity (ETC) and electron donating capacity (EDC) of compost-derived DOM increased by 13%-29% and 40%-47%, respectively, with the addition of Fe 3 O 4 NPs during sludge composting. Analyzing the composition and structure of DOM revealed that Fe 3 O 4 NPs promoted the formation of humic acid-like substances and enhanced the aromatic condensation degree of DOM. Correlation analysis indicated that the increase in EDC of DOM was closely associated with the phenolic group in DOM and influenced by quinone groups and the degree of aromatization of DOM. The higher EDC and the structural evolution of DOM in group Fe reduced the bioaccessibility of Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn. Water occurrence states in sewage sludge, influenced by sludge physicochemical properties, are crucial for sludge dewaterability and have recently been regarded as a research hotspot. Here, the multifold characteristics of sludge flocs during hydrothermal treatment, including rheological properties, solid-water interfacial interactions, and the polarity distribution and molecular structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), were systematically investigated, and the impact of these characteristics on sludge dewaterability was explored in depth. Hydrothermal treatment at 80 °C and 100 °C induced the conversion of free water into bound water, while an increase in temperature to 180 °C resulted in a significant decrease in bound water content, approximately 4-fold lower than at 100 °C. In addition to the conventional view of decreased sludge surface hydrophilicity at high temperatures, the decline in bound water was associated with the reduction in sludge apparent viscosity. XAD resin fractionation identified the hydrophobic/hydrophilic EPS (HPO-/HPI) ratio as an important factor determining water occurrence states. Especially, hydrolysis of HPI-related hydrophilic proteins and subsequent increase in HPO-related tryptophan-like substances played a dominant role in reducing sludge viscosity and facilitating the release of bound water. Protein conformational analysis revealed that the disruption of α-helix structures and disulfide bonds significantly reduced EPS water-holding capacity, providing strong evidence for the potential of targeting these dense structure units to enhance sludge dewaterability. The escalating volume of sewage sludge (SS) generated poses challenges in disposal, given its potential harm to the environment and human health. This study explored sustainable solutions for SS management with a focus on energy recovery. Employing CO 2 -assisted pyrolysis, we converted SS into flammable gases (H 2 and CO; syngas). Single-stage pyrolysis of SS in a CO 2 conditions demonstrated that CO 2 enhances flammable gas production (especially CO) through gas phase reactions (GPRs) with volatile matter (VM) at temperatures ≥520 °C. Specifically, the CO 2 partially oxidized the VM released from SS and concurrently underwent reduction into CO. To enhance the syngas production at temperatures ≤520 °C, multi-stage pyrolysis setup with additional heat energy and a Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst were utilized. These configurations significantly increased flammable gas production, particularly CO, at temperatures ≤520 °C. Indeed, the flammable gas yield in the catalytic pyrolysis of SS increased from 200.3 mmol under N 2 conditions to 219.2 mmol under CO 2 conditions, representing a 4.4-fold increase compared to single-stage pyrolysis under CO 2 conditions (50.0 mmol). By integrating a water-gas-shift reaction, the flammable gases produced from CO 2 -assisted catalytic pyrolysis were expected to have the potential to generate revenue of US$4.04 billion. In this study, high temperature thermotolerant nitrifying bacteria (TNB) and high temperature thermotolerant sulfide oxidizing bacteria (TSOB) were obtained from compost samples and inoculated into sewage sludge (SS) compost. The effects of inoculation on physical and chemical parameters, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide release, nitrogen form and sulfur compound content change and physical-chemical properties during nitrogen and sulfur conversion were studied. The results showed that inoculation of TNB and TSOB increased the temperature, pH, OM degradation, C/N ratio and germination index (GI) of compost. This study investigated the impact of two low-temperature thermal pre-treatments on continuous anaerobic reactors' performance, sequentially fed with sludge of different total solids content (∼3 % and ∼6 %) and subjected to progressively increasing Organic Loading Rates (OLR) from 1.0 to 2.5 g volatile solids/(L Reactor ⋅day). Assessing pre-treatments' influence on influent sludge characteristics revealed enhanced organic matter hydrolysis, facilitating sludge solubilization and methanogenesis; volatile fatty acids concentration also increased, particularly in pre-treated sludge of ∼6 % total solids, indicating improved heating efficiency under increased solids content. The reactor fed with sludge pre-treated at 45 °C for 48 h and 55 °C for an extra 48 h exhibited the highest methane yield under all applied OLRs, peaking at 240 ± 3.0 mL/g volatile solids at the OLR of 2.5 g volatile solids/(L Reactor ⋅day). 16S rRNA gene sequencing demonstrated differences in the reactors' microbiomes as evidence of sludge thickening and the different pre-treatments applied, which promoted the release of organic matter in diverse concentrations and compositions. This study evaluated the impact of incorporating earthworms (Eisenia fetida) on the drained water quality from a sludge treatment reed bed. The experiment encompassed four setups of treatment beds in two replicates: planted with Arundo donax and addition of earthworms, planted without earthworms, unplanted with earthworms, and treatment bed without plants nor earthworms as control. The units were fed every two weeks with mixed sewage sludge, a blend of primary and secondary sludge over 24 cycles. The mixed sewage sludge had mean dry and volatile solid contents of 24.71 g.DS.L -1 (± 13.67) and 19.14 g.VS.L -1 (± 10.29) resulting a sludge loading rate of 43.59 kg.DS.m -2 .year -1 (± 14.49). The inclusion of earthworms in the planted unit reduced release masses of total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, nitrate and phosphorous by 43, 45, 75 and 45 % compared to the planted unit. Plant biomass production increased by 43 % with the earthworm presence. The removal efficiency of the units improved after a ramp-up phase (after six months feeding) of which the concentration of TSS, COD and Escherichia coli met limits for water reuse while nitrogen components and phosphorous surpassed the limits. The planted unit with earthworms removed 99 and 99 % of TSS and COD, respectively. Livestock manure is often contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) and HM resistance genes (HMRGs), which pollute the environment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of the aqueous phase (AP) produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge (SS) alone and the AP produced by co-HTC of rice husk (RH) and SS (RH-SS) on humification, HM bioavailability, and HMRGs during chicken manure composting. RH-SS and SS increased the humic acid content of the compost products by 18.3 % and 9.7 %, respectively, and significantly increased the humification index (P < 0.05) compared to the CK (addition of tap water). The passivation of HMs (Zn, Cu, As, Pb, and Cr) increased by 12.17-23.36 % and 9.74-15.95 % for RH-SS and SS, respectively, compared with that for CK. RH-SS and SS reduced the HMRG abundance in composted products by 22.29 % and 15.07 %, respectively. The partial least squares path modeling results showed that SS and RH-SS promoted compost humification while simultaneously altering the bacterial community and reducing the bioavailability of metals and host abundance of HMRGs, which has a direct inhibitory effect on the production and distribution of HMRGs. A considerable number of micropollutants from human activities enter the wastewater network for removal. However, at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), some proportion of these compounds is retained in the sewage sludge (biosolids), and due to its high content of nutrients, sludge is widely applied as an agricultural fertilizer and becomes a means for the micropollutants to be introduced to the environment. Accordingly, a holistic semiquantitative nontarget screening was performed on sewage sludges from five different WWTPs using nanoflow liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Sixty-one inorganic elements were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Across all sludges, the nontarget analysis workflow annotated >21,000 features with chemical structures, and after strict prioritization and filtering, 120 organic micropollutants with diverse chemical structures and applications such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, flame retardants, and industrial and natural compounds were identified. None of the tested sludges were free from organic micropollutants. Pharmaceuticals contributed the largest share followed by pesticides and natural products. The predicted concentration of identified contaminants ranged between 0.2 and 10,881 ng/g dry matter. Through quantitative nontarget analysis, this study comprehensively demonstrated the occurrence of cocktails of micropollutants in sewage sludges.

The land application of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants has been recognized as a major source of microplastic contamination in soil. Nevertheless, the fate and behavior of microplastics in soil remain uncertain, particularly their distribution and transport, which are poorly understood. This study does a bibliometric analysis and visualization of relevant research publications using the CiteSpace software. It explores the limited research available on the topic, highlighting the potential for it to emerge as a research hotspot in the future. Chinese researchers and institutions are paying great attention to this field and are promoting close academic cooperation among international organizations. Current research hot topics mainly involve microplastic pollution caused by the land application of sewage sludge, as well as the detection, environmental fate, and removal of microplastics in soil. The presence of microplastics in sludge, typically ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of particles (p)/kg, inevitably leads to their introduction into soil upon land application. In China, the estimated annual accumulation of microplastics in the soil due to sludge use is approximately 1.7 × 10 13  p. In European countries, the accumulation ranges from 8.6 to 71 × 10 13  p. Sludge application has significantly elevated soil microplastic concentrations, with higher application rates and frequencies resulting in up to several-fold increases. The primary forms of microplastics found in soils treated with sludge are fragments and fibers, primarily in white color. These microplastics consist primarily of components such as polyamide, polyethylene, and polypropylene. The vertical transport behavior of microplastics is influenced by factors such as tillage, wind, rainfall, bioturbation, microplastic characteristics (e.g., fraction, particle size, and shape), and soil physicochemical properties (e.g., organic matter, porosity, electrical conductivity, and pH). Research indicates that microplastics can penetrate up to 90 cm into the soil profile and persist for decades. Microplastics in sewage sludge-amended soils pose potential long-term threats to soil ecosystems and even human health. Future research should focus on expanding the theoretical understanding of microplastic behavior in these soils, enabling the development of comprehensive risk assessments and informed decision-making for sludge management practices. Inorganic coagulants such as poly aluminum ferric chloride (Al/Fe) are applied conventionally to sewage sludge dewatering and can be retained in the sludge cake, causing its conductivity to increase and generate secondary pollution. To reduce these disadvantages, there is a need to develop alternative, more sustainable chemicals as substitutes for conventional inorganic coagulants. In the present investigation, the application of a polymeric chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS) is explored as a complete, or partial, replacement for Al/Fe in the context of sludge dewatering processes. Laboratory experiments using digested sewage sludge showed that CQAS could effectively substitute for over 80 % of the Al/Fe inorganic coagulant in the sludge dewatering process. This substitution resulted in a reduction of sludge cake conductivity by more than 50 %. Simulation of sludge dewatering curves and imaging of the sludge surface indicated that the addition of CQAS led to an increase in nanosized pores, and a decrease in the specific resistance of the sludge filter cake as the dosage of Al/Fe decreased to around 30 %. The variations of fluorescence emission, quantum yield and carboxylic and amino groups, suggested that the chelating of Al/Fe decreased due to the bridging effects of CQAS. The CQAS had different flocculation bridging effects on various EPS fractions, which varied the amount of protein chelated with Al/Fe in each fraction. Fly ash generated from municipal waste incineration (MWI) contains various toxic substances, and it has to be properly treated before disposal or reuse. Water washing and thermal pyrolysis can improve the destruction efficiency of PCDD/Fs in fly ash generated from municipal solid waste incinerators. Since sulfur oxides and nitrogen compounds generated by the heating of the sewage sludge poison the catalytic active sites for PCDD/Fs formation on fly ash surface, co-pyrolysis of fly ash with sewage sludge effectively inhibits precursor formation and de novo synthesis reaction, resulting in the great reduction of PCDD/F formation. The results of the pyrolysis at 350 °C show that the PCDD/Fs removal efficiencies based on mass concentration are over 99%. The results at 350 °C of different reaction times show that the reaction time of 10 min is sufficient to reach the European End of Waste criteria (≤ 20 pg TEQ/g) when the ratio of fly ash/sewage sludge is controlled at 1:1., (© 2024. This study explored the effect of a solenoid magnetic field (SOMF) as a pre-treatment on anaerobic sewage sludge (ASS) before using it in an osmotic microbial fuel cell (OMFC) as an inoculant. The ASS efficiency in terms of colony-forming unit (CFU) was improved ten times by applying SOMF compared to the control conditions. The obtained highest power density, current density, and water flux in the OMFC were 32.70 ± 5 mW·m -2 , 135.13 ± 15 mA·m -2 , and 4.24 ± 0.11 L·m -2 h -1 respectively, for 72 h at 1 mT magnetic field. The coulombic efficiency (CE) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency were increased to 40-45% and 4-5% respectively, compared to un-treated ASS. Also, the start-up time of the ASS-OMFC system was almost reduced to 1-2 days based on open circuit voltage data. On the other hand, increasing the pre-treatment intensity of SOMF with time, it decreased the performance of OMFC. Also, the low intensity with increased pre-treatment time up to a specific limit enhanced the performance of OMFC.

Electro-dewatering of sewage sludge with pulsating voltage was conducted under the two different wave shapes (square wave (SQW) and half-sine wave (HSW)) to investigate the influence of wave shape and duty cycle on sludge dewatering performance. The results indicated that, under the same average voltage, the moisture content of dewatered sludge with HSW was 10.3%-35.4% lower than that with SQW, suggesting the better dewatering performance of HSW. The optimal dewatering performance was achieved at duty cycle of 80% for SQW and 60% for SHW. The chemical oxygen demand of filtrate from HSW could be 13% higher than that from SQW, indicating the higher capacity of HSW in breaking sludge cells/floc structure. The applied voltage during electrochemical treatment promoted the hydrolysis of protein in filtrate, and the main components in the electro-dewatered filtrate were fulvic acid- and humic acid-like substances. The specific energy consumption for sludge electro-dewatering were 0.015-0.269 kWh/(kg removed water), and it was almost in linear relationship with duty cycle. The safety of municipal sewage sludge has raised great concerns because of the accumulation of large-scale endocrine disrupting chemicals in the sludge during wastewater treatment. The presence of contaminants in sludge can cause secondary pollution owing to inappropriate disposal mechanisms, posing potential risks to the environment and human health. Effect-directed analysis (EDA), involving an androgen receptor (AR) reporter gene bioassay, fractionation, and suspect and nontarget chemical analysis, were applied to identify causal AR agonists in sludge; 20 of the 30 sludge extracts exhibited significant androgenic activity. Among these, the extracts from Yinchuan, Kunming, and Shijiazhuang, which held the most polluted AR agonistic activities were prepared for extensive EDA, with the dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-equivalency of 2.5 - 4.5 ng DHT/g of sludge. Seven androgens, namely boldione, androstenedione, testosterone, megestrol, progesterone, and testosterone isocaproate, were identified in these strongest sludges together, along with testosterone cypionate, first reported in sludge media. These identified androgens together accounted for 55 %, 87 %, and 52 % of the effects on the sludge from Yinchuan, Shijiazhuang, and Kunming, respectively. High-solid anaerobic digestion of hydrothermal sewage sludge has been developed. In order to upgrade the process by focusing on ammonia inhibition, a simply-equipped stripping system without additional alkali or heat supply was introduced by in situ biogas self-circulation. As the determined limit of total ammonia nitrogen at 1500 mg/L and 1000 mg/L for the mesophilic (MAD) and thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) respectively and stripping rate at 5 L/min, continuous MAD and TAD was conducted in parallel. The stripping system successfully polished up the ammonia inhibition, and methanogenic capability of the TAD was promoted to approximately 90.0 % of the potential. Intermittent stripping mode proved usable. More frequent stripping was inevitable for the TAD as compared to the MAD. Hydraulic retention time below 20 d resulted in failure of the stripping mode due to rapid ammonia generation. Phosphate tailings (PT) was used to reduce the release of heavy metals (HMs) during pyrolysis and the leachable rate of residual HMs, and simultaneously improve the bioavailability of phosphorus in the sludge-based biochar. The concentration of heavy metals and the fractions determined by BCR method was used to investigate the release and the transformation of Zn, Pb, Mn, Ni and Cu during pyrolysis involved with the effects of temperature and the addition of PT. The respective pyrolysis experiments shows that the release of Zn and Pb increases with temperature for both sewage sludge (SS) and PT, and the bioavailable fractions (F1 + F2) of Mn, Ni, and Cu increases with temperature for PT. During co-pyrolysis, blended samples released lower quantities of Zn and Pb and presented lower bioavailability of HMs than the individual SS or PT. A synergistic effect of co-pyrolysis was evident for volatile Zn and Pb. The decomposition of CaMg (CO 3 ) 2 from PT produced CaO, by which the volatile ZnCl 2 and PbCl 2 were transformed into ZnO and PbO with less volatility and higher reactivity with SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 than the chlorides. Then SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 from SS acted as the final stabilizer to immobilize the oxides. The final product combined with SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 , such as ZnSiO 4 and ZnAl 2 O 4 , were detected. Arsenic (As) in sewage sludge poses a significant threat to environmental and human health, which has attracted widespread attention. This study investigated the value of adding sodium percarbonate (SP) on phosphorus (P) availability and As efflux detoxification through HS-P-As interactions. Due to the unique structure of humus (HS) and the similar chemical properties of P and As, the conditions for HS-P-As interaction are provided. This study discussed the content, morphology and microbial communities of HS, P and As by using metagenomic and correlation analysis. The results showed that the humification index in the experiment group (SPC) was 2.34 times higher than that in the control group (CK). The available phosphorus (AP) content of SPC increased from 71.09 mg/kg to 126.14 mg/kg, and SPC was 1.11 times that of CK. The relative abundance of ACR3/ArsB increased. Pst, Actinomyces and Bacillus commonly participated in P and As conversion. The correlation analysis revealed that the humification process was enhanced, the AP was strengthened, and the As was efflux detoxified after SP amendment. The spread of biogenic matrices for agricultural purposes can lead to plastic input into soils, raising a question on possible consequences for the environment. Nonetheless, the current knowledge concerning the presence of plastics in biogenic matrices is very poor. Therefore, the objective of the present study was a quali-quantitative characterization of plastics in different matrices reused in agriculture as manures, digestate, compost and sewage sludges. Plastics were quantified and characterized using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy coupled with an optical microscope (μFT-IR) in Attenuated Total Reflectance mode. Our study showed the presence of plastics in all the investigated samples, albeit with differences in the content among the matrices. We measured a lower presence in animal matrices (0.06-0.08 plastics/g wet weight w.w.), while 3.14-5.07 plastics/g w.w. were measured in sewage sludges. Fibres were the prevalent shape and plastic debris were mostly in the micrometric size. The most abundant polymers were polyester (PEST), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). The worst case was observed in the compost sample, where 986 plastics/g w.w. were detected. The majority of these plastics were compostable and biodegradable, with only 8% consisting of fragments of PEST and PE. This article presents ways of recovering waste in the form of anaerobically digested and dried sewage sludge (average humidity approx. 6 wt%) by carbonization at various temperatures in the range of 400-900 °C. The resulting products, biochars, are investigated in terms of yield, surface properties and Raman spectra analysis. The sorption capacity of biochars differs depending on the carbonization temperature. The experimental amount of adsorbed CO 2 slowly increases with the carbonization temperature from 0.212 mmol/g at 400 °C to the highest value of 0.415 mmol/g, which is achieved at 900 °C by slow carbonization at a rate of 10 °C/min. Additionally, there is a strong positive dependence of the adsorption capacity on the micropore volume. Incineration is one of the most widely used treatments in the field of sewage sludge disposal. However, the choice of sewage sludge incineration process is still controversial. In this study, the comparative life cycle assessment of sewage sludge incineration processes, including the mono-incineration, co-incineration in coal-fired power plants and co-incineration in municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration plants, was carried out from the perspective of environment, carbon footprint and economy. The environmental assessment results show that terrestrial ecotoxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity, marine ecotoxicity, human carcinogenic toxicity and human non-carcinogenic toxicity are the most significant environmental impacts. And the environmental performance of co-incineration in coal-fired power plants is the best. Moreover, the environmental impact is most sensitive to the dehydrant, electricity and fly ash chelating agent. Co-incineration in MSW incineration plants has the lowest carbon emissions, with only 70.50% and 82% of the carbon emissions from mono-incineration and co-incineration in coal-fired power plants, respectively. Furthermore, sewage sludge mono-incineration has the highest disposal costs because of the higher depreciation and solid waste disposal costs.
