Multimodal media make meaning by intersecting the semiotic resources of language, visual display, sound and music, cinematic movement, material artifacts, and abstract animation. As meaning-makers, we live across institutions and media and we make meanings that no single medium or institution can control. Transmedia franchises pursue us, colonizing the chronotopes of postmodern life to array the branded content of their media products everywhere we look and go. Social semiotics provides a foundation for critical multimedia analysis that can reach beyond the internal multimodality of individual works to grasp the social meanings of transmedia franchises and trans-institutional lives. The power of visual communication is multiplied when it is co-deployed with language in multimodal texts. In hypertexts, such as websites, the interaction of these two semiotic resources affords new forms of informational and design complexity and presents us with some new political choices. This article offers a semiotic scheme for the analysis of composite verbal-visual meanings and some discussions of the semiotic politics of visual communication in hypermedia design. In an institution undergoing basic structural re-organization, the development of a new website became a critical focus for discourse about the functions and values of the organization. Discourse analysis reveals a complex system of heteroglossic relations among the various viewpoints within the organization. Combined with semiotic analysis of the website development, it can help us to understand the role of a new medium of wide-scale communication in processes of organizational change.
