Using one opening (filter) within the floors of hydraulic structures is a known technique to relieve the seepage effects on their floors. In this study, a new method to control seepage flow by using two identical filters instead of one was tackled numerically. A comparative analysis of using one versus two filters was conducted for different thicknesses of the permeable stratum, apron size (b), filter length, and sheet pile wall depths. Results indicate that two filters are considerably more effective than using one where the overall uplift force, the maximum potential head, and the hydraulic exit gradient downstream of the floor are reduced to 42–56%, 42–51%, and 66–76%, respectively, compared to one filter, while slightly increasing seepage flow by 1–7%. Many reasons can lead to horizontal openings (cracks) appearing along the sheet pile walls beneath hydraulic structures. The current study tackled their effects on seepage flow for the first time and examined their impact on the floor. A crack in the upstream sheet pile wall can increase total uplift forces by up to 40%, while a crack in the downstream sheet pile wall can increase the hydraulic exit gradient by up to 230% [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the process of development and utilization of mine resources, the damp-heat environment has always been a difficult problem for mining. An enormous amount of research effort has gone into analyzing the underground operating environment. By summarizing the existing research theories on the damp-heat environment in the mine, this paper analyzed the influence of the wall rock, wind flow parameters, groundwater seepage, and other factors on the damp-heat environment and summarizes the determination of heat transfer coefficient (h) and mass transfer coefficient (m), which provided the theoretical basis for the improved technology of the damp-heat environment of mines. The field synergy theory (FST) reveals the essence of enhancing heat transfer performance and mass transfer performance and has been widely applied in engineering practice; based on the commonality between the research model of the FST and the damp-heat environment of the mine, we put forward a novel approach by using the FST to study the mine's damp-heat problem and gave the research models based on the FST under the form of bifurcation and turning wall rock, which can be used to guide the design and layout of the mine wind flow deflector. Finally, considering the actual economic benefits of mine engineering, the FST and ventilation system power consumption are used as comprehensive evaluation indicators to guide the design of ventilation systems, which provided fresh concepts and approaches for improving the subterranean damp-heat environment. Sediment incipient motion is the first step in sediment resuspension. Previous studies ignored the effect of seepage flow on the mobility of sediment particles and simplified the seabed surface as a rigid boundary. A flume experiment was designed to innovatively divide the seabed into two parts to control the dynamic response of the seabed and control the seepage conditions. In the experiment, the seabed sediments and the amplitude of internal solitary waves (ISWs) were changed to compare and analyze the impact of seepage flow on the sediment resuspension by shoaling ISWs. Moreover, parametric research and verification were carried out. Results indicate that seepage flow can greatly influence fine sand, promote sediment resuspension, and increase the amount of suspension by two times on average. However, seepage flow had a little effect on the suspension of clayey silt and sandy silt. Besides, seepage force was added to the traditional gravity, drag force, and uplift force, and the parameterization of threshold starting shear stress of coarse-grained sediments was developed. The results of this parameterization were verified, and seepage force was critical to parameterization. The threshold starting shear stress was reduced by 54.6% after increasing the seepage force. The physical mechanism of this process corresponded to the vertical reciprocating transient seepage in and out the seabed interface caused by the wave-induced transient excess pore water pressure. Tidal channels migrate frequently under the combined actions of coastal dynamics and bank collapse, significantly affecting the stability of tidal network systems. However, existing studies mainly focus on in-channel flow erosion during flood tides, while less efforts are devoted to bank retreat driven by seepage erosion during the ebb tides. It is thus urgent to understand the underlying mechanism of bank collapse that driven by seepage. This study investigates the impact of seepage head height on bank collapse through physical experiments, including bank collapse modes, bank line variations and bank retreat rate. Results show that the process of bank collapse is related to seepage head height. We observe a transition of bank collapse mode from cantilever failure to tension failure, with increased seepage head height. A positive correlation between bank retreat rate and seepage head height is found. Overall, this research reveals the mechanism of bank collapse driven by seepage, and explains the distinct failure process of bank collapse over ebb tides, which is of great significance to the study of tidal channel evolution. In the present study, three machine learning methods were applied for predicting seepage flow through embankment dams, namely (i) support vector regression (SVR), relevance vector machine (RVM), and Gaussian process regression (GPR). The three models were developed using seepage flow (Q: L/mn) and piezometer level (Z:m) measured at several piezometers placed in the corps body of the dam. The proposed models were calibrated and validated using a separate subset. Models evaluation and comparison was successfully achieved using various performances metrics, i.e., coefficient of correlation (R), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE). Experimental results showed that the proposed models are a good alternative to the in situ measured and contributed significantly in overcoming the case of missing measured seepage flow. The best performances were obtained using the RVM model with R and NSE values of ≈0.909 and ≈0.823, followed by the GPR model with R and NSE values of ≈0.891 and ≈0.767, while the SVR model was ranked as the poorest one exhibiting R and NSE values of ≈0.780 and ≈0.600, respectively. While, a growing number of investigations have focused on testing machine learning in terms of their feasibilities to accurately describe seepage flow, as well as providing important support to our understanding of the factors affecting its fluctuation, the present work was demonstrated that the combination of a wide range of variables can help in simulating seepage flow, and enhance their sensitivity which has help in developing new algorithms. This paper focuses on the influence of permeability anisotropy of seepage flow on the face stability for a shied tunnel. An analytical model has been proposed to present the hydraulic head distribution around the tunnel face in the anisotropic ground, considering the difference of permeability coefficient in the horizontal direction and the vertical direction. The rationality of the proposed model is verified by a series of numerical simulations. Then, an analytical model of face stability for a tunnel under the anisotropic seepage has been established based on the limit analysis upper bound method. Comparisons of the analytical solutions and the numerical simulations are conducted, and the limit support pressure of the two methods is consistent. The effect of permeability anisotropy and water pressure on the stability of the tunnel face is analyzed through the three-dimensional analytical solution. Anisotropy of permeability has a significant impact on the stability of the tunnel face, and its impact gradually decreases. It can also be found that the water pressure coefficient of the tunnel face has a significant effect on the limit support pressure and the failure area when the ratio of the horizontal permeability to the vertical permeability is large. In open channel flow, the velocity distribution is required to analyze the flow parameters such as discharge, energy and momentum correction factors, and scour depth. Though the existing technique can simulate the velocity distribution practically sound, the hypothesis on the cumulative distribution function of velocity is difficult to track and restricted by several factors that it holds. The paper aims to extend the entropy-based 1-D velocity distribution to rectangular seepage channels, considering the cumulative distribution function based on channel geometry. The present work developed a Tsallis and Shannon entropy-based model for proposing 1-D velocity distributions in seepage-affected alluvial channels. The velocity distributions were evaluated with laboratory observations and were compared with Shannon and Tsallis entropy-based velocity distributions equation. The Shannon and Tsallis entropy-based 1D velocity distributions agreed with experimental data satisfactorily and compared well. However, based on the regression analysis, Tsallis-based velocity distribution performed better than the Shannon-based entropy model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate hydraulic head distribution in front of a shield tunnel in a saturated soil layer, theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are carried out in this study. Based on the partial differential equilibrium equation of seepage flow, a three-dimensional (3D) theoretical analytical model of the shield tunnel face and the seepage field in front of it is established using the eigenfunction and the Fourier series expansion methods, and the hydraulic head calculation formula is derived. Combined with engineering cases, the theoretical analysis results and the 3D numerical simulation results are compared and analyzed. The effect of the water pressure of the tunnel face on the hydraulic head distribution is also analyzed. The results of the proposed analytical solution are in agreement with those of the numerical simulation solutions; moreover, the proposed analytical solution requires less time to calculate the seepage hydraulic head than the numerical simulation. The ratio of the initial water table to the diameter (D) of tunnel face has a more significant impact on the hydraulic head distribution at a position 0.5D above the tunnel vault. The roughness and tortuosity of fractures are essential parameters affecting the fluid flow in a jointed rock mass. This paper investigates the influence of fracture roughness and tortuosity on fluid seepage behavior. A rough fracture surface was characterized by means of three-dimensional scanning and three-reconstruction technology, and the roughness and tortuosity of rock fractures were calculated. Hydraulic tests were conducted on deformed sandstone fractures with a self-made fracture seepage device, and the variation in the seepage flow was analyzed in rough fractures. The experimental results showed that the seepage flow of fluid decreased non-linearly with the increase in fracture roughness. Under different normal pressures, the friction resistance coefficient and tortuous resistance coefficient decreased with the increase in the Reynolds number. The friction resistance coefficient model and tortuous resistance coefficient model were used to quantitatively analyze the influence of fracture tortuosity and roughness on fluid flow, respectively. A modified model of the frictional resistance coefficient, considering fracture tortuosity and roughness, was established, which clearly expresses the law that with the increase in fracture tortuosity and roughness, the seepage flow of fluid decreases, and the head loss increases. Assuming time-averaged normalized velocity as a random variable, the present work developed a Renyi entropy-based model for deriving one-dimensional and two-dimensional velocity distributions in seepage-affected alluvial channels. The model requires the maximization of Renyi entropy using the principle of maximum entropy, subject to specified constraints. The derived velocity distributions can have maximum velocity on or below the free surface. The velocity distributions were evaluated with laboratory observations and were also compared with theoretical velocity distributions reported in the literature. The Renyi entropy-based 2D velocity distributions satisfactorily agreed with experimental data, and compared well with reported distributions. Also, the Renyi entropy provided more accurate 2D velocity distribution in the near-bed flow of seepage experiments than the other technique. Seepage analysis plays a key role in geotechnical engineering and contributes significantly to the success of its infrastructure projects. Several engineers consider the Finite element (FE) method basics when executing calculations for designing hydraulic structures and dams. Numerical methods are used herein to solve the problem of seepage flow of water under concrete dams. The FE method is applied to model the dam structure and water level. The seepage velocity distribution in the porous soil is determined, and the effects of varying multiple parameters on the velocity are studied. The different parameters investigated are the dam dimensions (i.e., width (4,8,10,15 m) and depth (0,2,4,8 m)), upstream water head level (10, 15, 20 m), soil permeability (10, 15, 20 m day−1) and ambient temperature (5 °C and 50 °C). The developed FE models were validated by carrying out comparisons with analytical solutions that showed that they were in good agreement. It was found that the dam width is inversely proportional to the seepage rate and is independent of the water head level where increasing the dam by 1 unit width drops the seepage by 3.7% regardless of the water head levels. The depth of the dam is exponentially related to the distance away from the toe and independent of both the dam's width and water head level. Increasing the dam depth reduces the seepage flow by 73% at shallower depths and the effect minimizes as we increase the depth to 1% reduction in seepage simulating an exponential behavior. Such behavior is typical for the dam depth factor regardless of the dam width and water head level variations used in the study. The water head level was also found to be linearly proportional to the seepage flow rate with an increased effect of about 10% per additional 1-m head level. In addition, the soil permeability is linearly proportional to the seepage rate, and the same increment is obtained regardless of the dam's dimensions and water head level. The effects of ambient temperature on the seepage flow were introduced in this paper and will be further studied in detail in our future simulations. This paper aims to analyze the turbulent structure of flows over beds undergoing downward seepage under clear-water conditions. Laboratory experiments in this regard were carried out in a straight rectangular channel that was 17.20 m long and 1.00 m wide. A sandy bed with median grain size d50 = 0.50 mm and sediment gradation σg = 1.65 (i.e., slightly non-uniform sediment) was used for the channel bed. The 3D instantaneous velocities of water were measured with an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) at the working test section. In the vicinity of the bed surface with seepage, measurements revealed that the flow longitudinal velocities (i.e., velocities in x direction) were higher than those in the case of a bed without seepage. Moreover, the variations inthe Reynolds shear stresses increased for the bed with seepage, indicating a higher exchange of flow energy towards the boundary and vice versa. Therefore, it was found that seepage processes influence the turbulence intensity, with a prominent magnitude in the streamwise and vertical directions. The paper also focuses on the third-order moment (skewness) and the kurtosis of velocity fluctuations and the governance of sweep events within the near-bed flow in cases where seepage was observed. Silty sand slopes are prone to damage due to seepage or rainfall. A partial reinforcement method using short polypropylene fiber and sand mixtures was proposed to protect silty sand slopes from seepage flow failure. The effects and the reinforcement mechanism were explored. First, triaxial tests were performed on sand samples reinforced with fiber lengths (6 and 12 mm) and contents (0.25 and 0.50%) to verify the reinforcement effect. Then, model tests were conducted on sand slopes under lateral seepage flow and the failure mode with different fiber contents and reinforcement method were examined. The results showed that the cohesion and shear strength of sand were significantly improved with the increase of fiber content and length. The suction of unsaturated sand was also enhanced by the fibers. The change in stress-strain behavior from strain softening to strain hardening indicated that static liquefaction could be effectively prevented. The failure mode and extent of slope damage depended on the fiber content. However, it was noted that the slope surface with small reinforcement range performed similarly to that with large reinforcement range. In conclusion, the partial reinforcement method with short discrete synthetic fibers can be used as an effective alternative for slope reinforcement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the pipeline scour mechanism under different conditions is essential for protection measures. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) are coupled for the simulations. To reduce the computational effort, the coarse-grained method is applied, and the Darcy-Forchheimer porous model is used to replace the far field elements. Both of the porous medium and particles-fluid interaction model are validated by comparison between simulation results and theories. The scouring simulation results show a good agreement with the experiments conducted with single-diameter spherical particles under different current-wave conditions. Further, the flow around the pipeline, the seepage in the sediment bed and the force acting on the particles are analyzed. The vortex shedding exists downstream under current but the vortex moves around under waves. The seepage depends on the pressure, influenced by the pipeline and the water depth, and the variation of the seepage is discussed. The force acting on the particles is not uniform along bed and the distribution is analyzed. This paper provides an insight into scour mechanics from the aspects including seepage and flow-particle interaction. Maintaining the stability of the tunnel face during the construction of the submarine shield tunnel is the prerequisite for safe construction. A series of face instability model tests under saturated strata were carried out. The earth pressure, the evolution of the soil arch area and the amount of soil entering the soil groove caused by the instability of the tunnel face under different face water pressure conditions were studied. A series of numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the effects of tunnel face water pressure. The results show that the vertical earth pressure and horizontal earth pressure at different positions show a gradual decrease with the increase of the baffle backward distance, and the smaller the water pressure ratio, the more obvious this law is. According to the test results, the decrease of the water pressure ratio of the tunnel face can significantly increase the soil intake of the soil tank, which indicates that the collapse range above the tunnel face is large. The trend of instability region obtained by numerical simulation is consistent with the test monitoring results. Purpose: This study aims to present a new numerical model for the simulation of water flow through porous media of anisotropic character, based on the network simulation method and with the use of the free code Ngspice. Design/methodology/approach: For its design, it starts directly from the flow conservation equation, which presents several advantages in relation to the numerical simulation of the governing equation in terms of the potential head. The model provides very precise solutions of streamlines and potential patterns in all cases, with relatively small meshes and acceptable calculation times, both essential characteristics when developing a computational tool for engineering purposes. The model has been successfully verified with analytical results for non-penetrating dams in isotropic media. Findings: Applications of the model are presented for the construction of the flow nets, calculation of uplift pressures, infiltrated flow and average exit gradient in anisotropic scenarios with penetrating dams with and without sheet piles, being all this output information part of the decision process in ground engineering problems involving these retaining structures. Originality/value: This study presents, for the first time, a numerical network model for seepage problems that is not obtained from the Laplace's governing equation, but from the water flow conservation continuity equation. The deep-seated failure caused by inadequate shear resistance against the weight of the surrounding soils is often the more probable mode of failure prior to other types of failure. In this research, stability of flexible supported vertical cuts in granular soils against the deep-seated failure, in the presence of the seepage flow, is investigated. First of all, the flow field is computed by the traditional finite elements method. It is then assumed that the soil in the proximity of the bottom of the cut is at the verge of the limiting equilibrium. Once the flow field solution is known as a steady-state solution, i.e., the background solution, the stress field at the limiting equilibrium subjected to this flow field has been calculated. The method of stress characteristics was used to solve the stress field. It is, therefore, possible to estimate the factor of safety against the deep-seated failure and to assess the overall stability of the system. Results reveal that in spite of quite good margin of safety in the absence of the seepage flow, the deep-seated failure becomes most likely to initiate when the seepage flow exists. The method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) has been recently developed to study the coupled flow-deformation problems in porous material and considerable success has been achieved comparing to traditional mesh-based method, especially for treating large deformation and post-failure. However, computational challenges remain for the hydro-mechanical boundary treatment as well as the accuracy and stability of the numerical scheme. It is shown that the use of conventional SPH operator for the solution of the coupled problem can lead to several issues including numerical instabilities, inaccuracies and unphysical particle clumping as well as particle disorders near the boundary. To address these issues, a general SPH scheme with enhanced accuracy for saturated/unsaturated porous material is proposed in this paper. An improved SPH formulation for seepage analysis is proposed to allow an accurate prediction of liquid flow in porous material. A new stabilisation technique that combines the use of a density diffusion term, a modified particle shifting algorithm, and a new viscous damping term is developed to further improve the accuracy, stability and robustness of the proposed method. The implementations of stress boundary conditions and hydraulic boundary conditions in SPH, such as confining stress, hydraulic head, infiltration/evaporation, and potential seepage face, using either wall boundary particles or free-surface domain particles, are discussed in detail. A range of benchmark examples is adopted to verify the validity of the present coupled framework. The proposed model is finally applied to simulate the failure process of embankment dam due to rapid drawdown. Results indicate that the methodology proposed herein can be a promising tool for the analysis of the coupled hydro-mechanical process in porous material involving large deformations. Soil arching effect, which relates to the load transfer and stress redistribution in a soil mass, exists commonly in various geotechnical situations. Many researchers have conducted trapdoor tests and theoretical analyses to study the soil arching and its development in recent years. However, little attention has been paid to the interaction between soil arching and seepage flow, both occurring during the tunnelling of a seabed tunnel. To study the influence of the seepage flow on soil arching, a series of two-dimensional trapdoor tests were carried out considering different fill heights and water level heights. Two subvertical slip surfaces were observed during the tests using the PIV technique. It was found that seepage flow increased the displacement of the particles and the effective vertical stress acting at the top of the trapdoor. However, there was little difference in the development of slip surfaces between the seepage condition and the saturated/no-seepage condition. In addition, a nonuniform distribution of vertical stresses at the top of the trapdoor was observed. The effective earth pressure measured along the centreline of the trapdoor was larger than that on the two edges of the trapdoor. But this nonuniformity decreased with an increasing water level height in the test chamber. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The scouring of seabed beneath an unburied pipeline under regular waves was investigated in a large wave flume. Sands and silts were employed for the contrast experiment and the results obtained were compared with data from literature. It was found that the standard formula of Sumer and Fredsøe was best at predicting scour depth of sands while underestimating that of sandy silts; time evolution of sand-scour depth better followed traditional exponential curves than did those of sandy silts; an empirical formula in the form of T * = 0.0066 θ − 3.034 is suggested for predicting the non-dimensional time scale of the scour process beneath pipeline in the Yellow River delta. The underestimated scour depth of silts was related to the wave-induced pore pressure responses not found in sands. It was wave-forced seepage flows that promoted the normal scour process during the initial period by exerting an uplifting seepage force on the surface particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The suction anchor becomes more popular for offshore oil and gas industry in deeper water. For suction anchor–soil interaction, the prediction of hydraulic conductivity of porous materials is a long-standing problem in offshore engineering. To investigate the hydraulic characteristics, an upward seepage flow through saturated sands is considered in this study. A numerical approach, which is able to describe the fluid–particle interaction at particle scale, has been employed to analyse fluid flow in sands. This approach is constructed by adopting a coupled discrete element method and computational fluid dynamic approach (CFD-DEM numerical model). The coupled CFD-DEM approach is first benchmarked by a classic geomechanics problem where analytical solutions are available, and then employed to investigate the characteristics of upward seepage flow in coarse sand columns. Through numerical modelling, the predicted relation between hydraulic gradient and flow velocity is obtained and it is compared with the classical analytical correlation. The effect of several bulk and micromechanical parameters including packing porosity, particle size combination and inter-particle rolling resistance on the flow characteristics is numerically examined. The results show that the particle polydispersity and packing porosity have significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity in the seepage flow. The introduction of inter-particle rolling resistance can change initial packing structure of particle assembly in some extent rather than the hydraulic conductivity from the particle shape effect perspective. The friction factor plays a crucial role in evaluating pressure gradient loss for water flow through fracture-matrix systems (FMS). This study presents a theoretical model for the FMS friction factor, incorporating viscous and inertial terms based on Forchheimer's law. The model considers the coupled effects of free flow, seepage flow, and roughness. The non-Darcy coefficient in the inertial term is determined by fitting 284 sets of FMS seepage test data. To validate the derived friction factor, COMSOL simulations are conducted using the coupled free and porous media flow module, considering two relative roughness values. The proposed model demonstrates higher accuracy compared to existing models and experimental data, with 101 fewer missed prediction points and a 21.4% improvement in accuracy. Additionally, this study examines fluid flow regimes and critical Reynolds numbers for various matrix porosities, permeabilities, fracture apertures, and relative roughness values. The findings reveal that FMS with low matrix permeability, high roughness, and small apertures exhibit larger friction factors and are more prone to nonlinear deviations from Darcy flow. This paper presents the case study of a collapsed riverbank protection structure, located in the curvature of the watershed along the Pasak river in Saraburi province, Thailand. Although efforts have been made to twice rehabilitate this collapsed structure, the rebuilt protection structures were unstable to prevent progressive collapse damage and the causes of their failure remained elusive. The project team was engaged to carried out the site investigation and finite element analysis prior to providing the remedial approach on the collapsed structure. The outcome from this study reveals that the natural disaster events were the main causes of the structure failure. During the rainy season, water flowed into the river from upstream farmlands by crossing the backfill of the riverbank protection structure. Seepage forces were thus developed in the direction of inflows, which resulted in reduced stability of the riverbank protection structure. Furthermore, the strong currents in the river continuously scoured the banks, undermining the natural slope in front of the riverbank protection structure, resulting in soil erosion in the passive zone and instability of the protection structure. Based on these two causes of failure, a remedial solution was devised using a new bored pile riverbank protection structure with the usage of geocomposites and ripraps. Geocomposites and ripraps were installed at the back and front of the bored pile walls to relieve the structure from seepage forces and to prevent soil erosion, respectively. An adequate factor of safety against the external and internal failure of the new riverbank protection structure was verified by finite element modeling and the results confirmed that the structure was safe. Extreme weather events, such as floods, are becoming more frequent in future with all consequences concerning the safety especially of water retaining structures, in particular, levees used as technical flood protection. The knowledge and correct consideration of coupled hydro-mechanical processes influencing the failure and post-failure behaviour of water saturated soils are of paramount significance for the assessment of hydraulically loaded geotechnical structures. This study focuses on the modelling of the processes governing the behaviour of water saturated soils using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) on the example of a homogeneous embankment under different loading conditions. This paper aims to improve available SPH framework in order to enhance soil-water interaction in this method for geotechnical engineering investigations. To achieve this goal, the suggested approach is validated intensively by various well-known problems. Finally, the verified tool is used to investigate the hydro-mechanical behaviour of homogeneous embankments under simultaneous hydraulic and mechanical loading. The simulation results prove that the suggested approach is capable of simulating relevant hydraulic and mechanical processes governing the deformation behaviour of hydraulically loaded structures beyond the failure point allowing the detailed analysis of the post-failure behaviour characterised by large deformations. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend the scaled boundary radial point interpolation method (SBRPIM), as a novel semi-analytical scheme, to the analysis of the steady state confined seepage flows.Design/methodology/approach This method combines the advantages of the scaled boundary finite element method and the BRPIM. In this method, only boundary nodes are used, no fundamental solution of the problem is required, and as the shape functions constructed based on the RPIM satisfy the Kronecker delta function property, the boundary conditions of problems can be imposed accurately and easily.Findings Three numerical examples, including seepage flow through homogeneous and non-homogeneous soils, are analyzed in this paper. Comparing the flow net obtained by SBRPIM and other numerical methods confirms the ability of the proposed method in analyzing seepage flows. In addition, in these examples, the accuracy of the SBRPIM in modeling the velocity singularity at a sharp corner is illustrated. • A new method was proposed for determining the maximum paste coating thickness. • Digital models of pervious concrete were created. • Influence of maximum paste coating thicknesses on the pore characteristics and seepage flow was investigated. • An empirical formula was proposed to determine the Kozeny–Carman constant. The determination of the maximum paste coating thickness on aggregate (MPCT) without void clogging is essential for effectively controlling the permeability of a pervious concrete (PC). The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of varying MPCTs on the pore characteristics and seepage flow of PC. A new method was proposed for determining the MPCT of PC, and the relationships between the MPCT and the rheological properties of cement paste were established. Subsequently, digital models of PC with varying MPCTs were created, and the connected pore was extracted for analysis of pore characteristics. Seepage flow simulations were conducted to analyze the permeability characteristics of PCs under varying MPCTs. The results indicate that the pore characteristics are directly influenced by the MPCT, in which the effective porosity, specific surface, and tortuosity show linear correlations with the MPCT. When the MPCT ranges from 0.44 to 0.99 mm, the pore size of the PCs exhibits a single-peak distribution ranging from 1.4 to 13.5 mm, while the coordination number of the pores is distributed within the range of 1 to 14. Additionally, the permeability coefficient of PC decreases as the MPCT increases. When the MPCT exceeds 0.85 mm, the permeability coefficient drops to less than 1 mm/s, and the rate of decrease slows down. An empirical formula was proposed to determine the Kozeny–Carman (KC) constant, which improves the accuracy of the KC equation in predicting the permeability of PC. Fractured seepage is an important factor affecting the interface stability of rock mass. It is closely related to fracture properties and hydraulic conditions. In this study, the law of seepage in a single fracture surface based on modified cubic law is described, and the three-dimensional discrete element method is used to simulate the dam foundation structure of the Capulin San Pablo (Costa Rica) hydropower station. The effect of construction joints and developed structure on dam stability is studied, and its permeability law and sliding stability are also evaluated. It is found that the hydraulic-mechanical coupling with strength reduction method in DEM is more appropriate to use to study the seepage-related problems of fractured rock mass, which considers practical conditions, such as the roughness of and the width of fracture. The strength reduction method provides a more accurate safety factor of dam when considering the deformation coordination with bedrocks. It is an important method with which to study the stability of seepage conditions in complex structures. This paper aims at revealing mechanical behavior of volcanic coarse grained soils subjected to seepage flow. In order to accomplish the purposes, a series of upward seepage tests was conducted to grasp piping phenomenon in compacted volcanic soils and to investigate the effects of differences in compaction conditions on its behavior. In the experiments, the movement of soil particles in seepage flow tests was observed using an X-ray CT scanner in detail. The test results showed that destabilization of soil structures due to seepage flow is changed depending on an increase of amount of finer soil particles, and that internal erosion is induced by loss of fine particles with the changes in void ratio. As a result, a significant variation in hydraulic conductivity was generated. Additionally, internal stability of volcanic soils under several geotechnical conditions was elucidated by empirical criterion. In the consideration of the results, it was shown that volcanic coarse grained soil including pumice particles with a low specific gravity was internally unstable. During the installation process of suction caisson in sandy seabed, the applied suction not only produces a downward driving force, but also decreases the penetration resistance to the caisson. In this paper, numerical studies were performed to investigate the characteristics of seepage flow around the caisson as well as its effects on the wall friction and the caisson tip resistance. A simplified approximation method was proposed to predict the reduction of penetration resistance. In particular, for the case of sandy seabed interbedded by a layer of low-permeability soil, the seepage flow will be suppressed with the caisson tip getting closer to the low-permeability layer. Interfacial seepage on soil-structure interface is common in water-related engineering, such as dam, culvert, water tunnel, foundation pit, etc. As a weak part in the project, seepage failure on soil-structure interface has caused many project accidents. However, there are few studies on the seepage mechanism analysis of soil-structure interface. In this paper, a series of numerical tests of interfacial seepage are carried out using CFD-DEM coupling method. The seepage mechanism and characteristics of different soil layers in the seepage device are analyzed and a formula for calculating the critical hydraulic gradient of the interface is discussed. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The seepage flow on soil-structure interface will go through three stages: stability stage, transition stage and particle erosion stage; (2) The porosity and flow velocity of soil on the interface are greater than those in the far-field soil at the beginning of seepage flow; (3) The particle erosion on the soil-structure interface occurs earlier and the erosion degree is more serious than that of the far-field soil; (4) The critical hydraulic gradient of the interface rises nonlinearly with the increase of the degree of soil compaction; (5) The formula for calculating the critical hydraulic gradient of the interface could predict the numerical test results well. Most of the current studies on the bearing capacity of rock foundations follow the Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, but all adopt the generalized tangent technique or the multi-tangent approach, which does not reflect the essence of the nonlinear dependence of the Hoek-Brown criterion. Therefore, a modified unilateral failure mechanism is proposed in the paper, using which the bearing capacity of shallow strip footings considering seepage and seismic forces is evaluated. Use of a statics-like approach for seepage condition and a modified pseudo-dynamic method for seismic condition. The comparison with the results of other literature confirms the feasibility and effectiveness of the study in the paper, while the parametric analysis shows that a smaller upper bound solution is yielded based on the failure mechanism proposed in this paper, and the horizontal gradient ratio, the horizontal factor of seismic acceleration, the normalized frequency, the geological strength index, the disturbance coefficient, and the rock type-dependent parameter all have significant effects on the bearing capacity of rock foundations. In addition, the analysis of the working conditions considering both seepage and seismic forces confirmed the dominance of seismic forces. The results of the superposition treatment between different working conditions are inaccurate, which will underestimate the foundation bearing capacity and cause a waste of cost. Artificial ground freezing is an environmentally friendly and reliable method for ground improvement during subway cross passage construction under variable hydrological conditions. However, natural or induced seepage flow influences significantly the closure of frozen wall, as it supplies a substantial source of heat. In this study, a physical model test was conducted based on the freezing project of a subway cross passage in Beijing Subway Line 19. A series of thermistors were installed in some representative locations to measure the temperature distribution and further calculate power demand. Besides, a hydro-thermal coupling model of freezing process under seepage conditions was derived to consider the variations of physical and thermodynamic parameters of the porous media and the latent heat of ice/water phase transition. The numerical approach was validated by the experimental results. Furthermore, four crucial indicators affecting the closure time during AGF process were quantitatively evaluated. The results showed that the closure time at seepage velocities of 0, 25.6 and 51.2 m/d were respectively 60, 110 and 441 min. Nevertheless, it was impossible to form continuous frozen bodies at 76.8 m/d. • Stability of non-circular tunnel face reinforced by bolts under seepage is assessed. • Upper-bound estimations to the safety factor of tunnel faces are provided. • Pore pressures considerably influence the required bolt layouts. This paper aims to develop a three-dimensional (3D) analytical framework to assess the safety factors of realistic non-circular tunnel faces reinforced by longitudinal bolts under seepage conditions from a discretization-based perspective. The axial failure mode of bolts (including the tensile failure of the bolt and the pull-out failure at the bolt-soil interface) paired with the introduction of the interaction zone is employed to describe the reinforcement effect of bolts. A numerical fluid calculation is performed to simulate the 3D seepage towards the non-circular tunnel face, and the resulting pore pressure distribution is extracted and further interpolated to determine the pore pressure of each discrete point on the 3D discretization-based failure mechanism. Within the kinematical approach of limit analysis, the work rate balance equation incorporating the role of the axial force along the interaction zone and the pore pressure due to the 3D seepage is established based on the discretization-based failure mechanism. Afterward, combining the strength reduction method with the dichotomy, the upper-bound estimations of safety factors can be obtained by an optimization process. The developed framework is compared with numerical fluid-mechanical calculations and other analytical methods with respect to an actual horseshoe tunnel, which proves that the developed framework is effective in providing fast and reasonable estimates of reinforced tunnel face under seepage conditions. Seepage-induced internal erosion and failure in unsaturated/saturated porous media is challenging for computational simulations as they involve the behaviour, interactions (solid, air, water) and transformation (fluidisation and deposition of fines grains) of different phases. Tackling this challenging problem requires correct mathematical descriptions of phase interactions and transformation together with a robust computational framework, both of which are addressed in this paper. The new mathematical model and coupled governing equations based on the continuum mixture theory enable the use of a single set of SPH particles for the descriptions of behaviour, interactions and phase transformation of all five phases of the porous media (soil skeleton, erodible fines particles, fluidised particles, water, and air), including the effect of both saturation and erosion on the shear strength of porous media. A fully explicit and stabilised SPH framework that allows accurate SPH approximations of spatial gradients is proposed for the numerical solutions of coupled governing equations. The proposed computational framework performs well in benchmark tests against available analytical and numerical solutions and achieved reasonable agreements with experiments. The stepped spillway design has been used for more than 3,300 years. A simple structure is the gabion stepped weir. A laboratory study was performed herein in a large size facility. Three gabion stepped weirs were tested with and without capping, as well as a flat impervious stepped configuration. For each configuration, detailed air-water flow measurements were conducted systematically for a range of discharges. The observations highlighted the seepage flow through the gabions and the interactions between seepage and overflow. The air-water flow properties showed that the air concentration, bubble count rate and specific interface data presented lower quantitative values in the gabion stepped weir, compared to those on the impervious stepped chute, while higher velocities were measured at the downstream end of the gabion stepped chute. The re-oxygenation rate was deduced from the integration of the mass transfer equation using air-water interfacial area and velocity measurements. The aeration performances of the gabion stepped weir were lesser than on the flat impervious stepped chute, but for the lowest discharge. Located in the middle reach of Yalong River in China, the Jinping-I Hydropower Station consists of a large-scale cavern system for water conveyance and power generation. Compared to other typical large-scale underground powerhouse cavern systems in Southwestern China, the construction site is characteristic of higher in situ geostresses, lower uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and poorer quality of the surrounding rocks, resulting in greater depth of the disturbed zone. In this study, the excavation-induced relaxation effects and their impacts on the hydraulic conductivity variations and seepage behaviors in the surrounding rocks of the Jinping-I underground powerhouse caverns were assessed with site characterization data and numerical simulations. The excavation-induced disturbance zones around the caverns were modeled using the plastic yield zone predicted with an equivalent elasto-plastic model and a constant deviatoric stress criterion based on the Hoek–Brown parameters of the surrounding rocks, respectively. The predicted results agree rather well with the disturbed zones detected by the in situ acoustic wave velocity measurements and borehole TV images. The excavation-induced permeability changes in the surrounding rocks were characterized with a strain-dependent hydraulic conductivity model that accounts for the development patterns and deformation behaviors of the critically-oriented fractures. The seepage behaviors with consideration of the permeability changes in the surrounding rocks were modeled with a variational inequality method at a steady state, and the numerical results imply the significance of proper characterizations of the excavation-induced disturbance effects and permeability changes in better understanding the groundwater flow and its controlled effect in the surrounding rocks. The bottom friction beneath random waves is predicted taking into account the effect of seepage flow. This is achieved by using wave friction factors for rough turbulent, smooth turbulent and laminar flow valid for regular waves together with a modified Shields parameter which includes the effect of seepage flow. Examples using data typical to field conditions are included to illustrate the approach. The analytical results can be used to make assessment of seepage effects on the bottom friction based on available wave statistics. Flood and sediment disasters caused by glacial lake outbursts have occurred frequently in recent years in the Himalayas of Nepal. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) can cause catastrophic flooding in downstream areas with serious damage to lives and property. It is thus important to investigate outburst floods from potentially dangerous glacial lakes. In this study, the characteristics of potential outburst floods from the Tsho Rolpa glacial lake due to two types of moraine dam failure caused by seepage flow or water overtopping were analyzed with various scenarios by using integrated modeling system of three numerical models: (1) the flow and bed-surface erosion model, (2) the seepage model and (3) the slope stability model. Flood inundation areas were also identified by using the numerical model of the flow and moraine dam failure and geographical information system tools. • Groundwater-surface water interactions are studied in two shallow aquifers. • A combination of hillslope processes shapes the catchment-scale streamflows. • Low-conductive hillslopes enhance overland flows and sustain late recessions. • High-diffusive hillslopes shape the event- and seasonal-scale recessions. • Hydraulic properties are significantly heterogeneous at the catchment scale. Surface and subsurface flows interact at different spatial and temporal scales through the development of saturated areas occurring when the aquifer reaches the surface. While this interaction exerts a strong control in the partitioning of water between base flow, seepage flow and overland flow, its quantification remains a challenge. Here, we propose a novel modeling approach based on two equivalent hillslopes to capture spatial and temporal variabilities of the main processes. We calibrate their subsurface hydraulic properties based on the temporal dynamics of stream discharge. The model is tested on two pilot catchments located in Brittany (France). For both catchments, the model is successfully calibrated on 40 years of stream discharge data. The results demonstrate that contrasted hydraulic properties are required, with: (1) a relatively low conductive hillslope (conductivities between 3x10–8 m/s and 2x10–6 m/s) enhancing overland flows during recharge periods while also sustaining low flows in the late recession period through slow aquifer discharge, and (2) a highly diffusive hillslope (diffusivity between 5x10–3 m2/s and 3x10–1 m2/s) dominantly shaping the event- to seasonal-scale streamflow recession behavior. The strong contrast of the two hillslopes reveals the fundamental role of heterogeneity in controlling groundwater storage-discharge functions, ruling out any homogeneous equivalent at the catchment scale. Low flows appear to be a non-obvious combination of the contributions of the two hillslopes, the less diffusive hillslope catching up to the more conductive one by the end of the low flow period. Catchment-scale responses integrate complex interactions between recharge, groundwater and overland flows through the volume of subsurface storage and the extent of the saturated area. Abstract: The composite element method (CEM) is formulated for the seepage analysis of rock masses containing fractures and drainage holes. Each fracture or drainage segment is treated as a special sub-element having definite seepage characteristics, and is located explicitly within the composite element. The governing equation for the composite element containing both fractures and drainage holes is established using the variational principle. By the CEM developed in this paper, the fractures and drainage holes can be simulated explicitly but do not intervene in the discrete of the calculation domain concerned, in this way the generation of the computation mesh is not restricted strongly by the position and the orientation of the fractures and drainage holes, which is important in the optimal design of seepage control system. If there are no fractures and drainage holes, the CEM will automatically be degenerated to the conventional finite element method (FEM). In this paper, the numerical simulation of the 3D seepage flow with fractional derivatives in porous media is considered under two special cases: non-continued seepage flow in uniform media (NCSF-UM) and continued seepage flow in non-uniform media (CSF-NUM). A fractional alternating direction implicit scheme (FADIS) for the NCSF-UM and a modified Douglas scheme (MDS) for the CSF-NUM are proposed. The stability, consistency and convergence of both FADIS and MDS in a bounded domain are discussed. A method for improving the speed of convergence by Richardson extrapolation for the MDS is also presented. Finally, numerical results are presented to support our theoretical analysis. This work experimentally investigates the turbulent flow characteristics of developing and fully-developed flows over a rough bed channel that is subjected to downward seepage. Instantaneous 3D velocities were collected using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) in the developing and fully-developed flow regions, along the channel centerline, to analyze different turbulent statistics. Observations revealed that the streamwise and vertical velocities were higher in developing flows, whereas the Reynolds shear stresses, and turbulence intensities, were smaller. The downward seepage would affect the velocity distributions and flow depth in both the developing and fully-developed regions. Therefore, new equations to represent the distribution of the turbulence intensities were proposed, and a comparison with the current literature is provided. In this study, an efficient data-intelligence paradigm comprised of Extended Kalman Filter integrated with the Feed Forward type Artificial Neural Network (EKF-ANN) scheme, as the main novelty, was developed for precise estimation of the daily seepage flow through embankment dam in Fontaine Gazelles Dam in Algeria. Here, three robust machine learning approaches, namely the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) Neural Networks, Radial Basis Function-Neural Networks (RBF-NN), and Random Forest (RF), were examined for evaluating the capability of the EKF-ANN in the prediction of seepage flow. According to the obtained results, the EKF-ANN paradigm outperformed the MLP, RF, and RBF-NN, respectively.
