Robust understanding of the fine-grained sediment cascades of temperate agricultural catchments is essential for supporting targeted management for addressing the widely reported sediment problem. Within the UK, many independent field-based measurements of soil erosion, sediment sources and catchment suspended sediment yields have been published. However, attempts to review and assess the compatibility of these measurements are limited. The data available suggest that landscape scale net soil erosion rates (∼38 t km−2 yr−1 for arable and ∼26 t km−2 yr−1 grassland) are comparable to the typical suspended sediment yield of a UK catchment (∼44 t km2 yr−1). This finding cannot, however, be reconciled easily with current prevailing knowledge that agricultural topsoils dominate sediment contributions to watercourses, and that catchment sediment delivery ratios are typically low. Channel bank erosion rates can be high at landscape scale (27 km−2 yr−1) and account for these discrepancies but would need to be the dominant sediment source in most catchments, which does not agree with a review of sediment sources for the UK made in the recent past. A simple and robust colour-based sediment source tracing method using hydrogen peroxide sample treatment is therefore used in fifteen catchments to investigate their key sediment sources. Only in two of the catchments are eroding arable fields likely to be important sediment sources, supporting the alternative hypothesis that bank erosion is likely to be the dominant source of sediment in many UK catchments. It is concluded that the existing lines of evidence on the individual components of the fine sediment cascade in temperate agricultural catchments in the UK are difficult to reconcile and run the risk of best management interventions being targeted inappropriately. Recommendations for future research to address paucities in measured erosion rates, sediment delivery ratios and suspended sediment yields, validate sediment source fingerprinting results, consider the sources of sediment-associated organic matter, and re-visit soil erosion and sediment cascade model parameterisation are therefore made. • Net soil erosion rates are approximately equal to catchment suspended sediment yields. • This is incompatible with most sediment originating from topsoils and low sediment delivery. • High bank erosion source contributions close the gap in sediment budgets. • The sources of mineral sediment were traced in 15 UK catchments. • Arable fields were suggested to be important sediment sources in only two of these. Water quality impairment by elevated sediment loss is a pervasive problem for global water resources. Sediment management targets identify exceedance or the sediment loss 'gap' requiring mitigation. In the UK, palaeo-limnological reconstruction of sediment loss during the 100–150 years pre-dating the post-World War II intensification of agriculture, has identified management targets (0.20−0.35 t ha−1 yr−1) representing 'modern background sediment delivery to rivers'. To assess exceedance on land for grazing ruminant farming, an integrated approach combined new mechanistic evidence from a heavily-instrumented experimental farm platform and a scaling out framework of modelled commercial grazing ruminant farms in similar environmental settings. Monitoring (2012–2016) on the instrumented farm platform returned sediment loss ranges of 0.11−0.14 t ha−1 yr−1 and 0.21−0.25 t ha−1 yr-1 on permanent pasture, compared with between 0.19−0.23 t ha−1 yr-1 and 0.43−0.50 t ha−1 yr−1and 0.10−0.13 t ha−1 yr−1and 0.25−0.30 t ha−1 yr-1 on pasture with scheduled plough and reseeds. Excess sediment loss existed on all three farm platform treatments but was more extensive on the two treatments with scheduled plough and reseeds. Excessive sediment loss from land used by grazing ruminant farming more strategically across England, was estimated to be up to >0.2 t ha−1 yr−1. Modelled scenarios of alternative farming futures, based on either increased uptake of interventions typically recommended by visual farm audits, or interventions selected using new mechanistic understanding for sediment loss from the instrumented farm platform, returned minimum sediment loss reductions. On the farm platform these were 2.1 % (up to 0.007 t ha−1 yr−1) and 5.1 % (up to 0.018 t ha−1 yr-1). More strategically, these were up to 2.8 % (0.014 t ha−1 yr−1) and 4.1 % (0.023 t ha−1 yr−1). When tracing the sources of sediment, reference to potential source groups is a necessity. However, the range of uncertainty present in source fingerprinting outputs has been shown to be increased by a high within-source group variability. The environmental factors controlling the magnetic properties of samples within a single field were examined on a particle size specific basis to continue building on the recent studies of the spatial variability associated with different tracer types. The study area was in the Eastern Cape of South Africa over a Quartzite geology and was covered by rough grassland. Topsoils and gully walls were intensively sampled within the study field. Further samples were collected from weathering bedrock exposures, burnt soil and wetland soil in order to explore potential controlling factors on source magnetism. Each sample was fractionated to 125–63 μm, 63–32 μm, 32–25 μm, 25–10 μm and < 10 μm. Topographic position was a major controlling factor on soil magnetism, with saturated lowland gully walls and wetland topsoils being less magnetic than dry topsoils, especially within the < 25 μm size fractions. The magnetism of the fields soils was primarily controlled by the concentrations of super paramagnetic and single domain grains formed through pedogenesis and combustion. The magnetism of samples increased with decreasing particle size. Dissolution of fine magnetic grains in the < 25 μm fractions provided a potential basis for surface – subsurface source discrimination but also increased within-source group variability. The 25–10 μm fraction was a good compromise between good discrimination and a low within-source variability. Little difference was found between the low frequency magnetic susceptibility of quartzite topsoils and the shale and sandstone topsoils found elsewhere in the Eastern Cape. However, igneous sources such as dolerite are far more magnetic than the quartzite topsoils. Discrimination between sediment sources can be highly variable within the < 63 μm fraction. For example, the < 10 μm fraction of soils from the study site had a higher magnetic susceptibility than Karoo shales (sieved to < 63 μm), whilst the 63–32 μm fraction had a lower susceptibility than the Karoo shales. Mitigation of diffuse water pollution from agriculture is of concern in the United Kingdom, so that freshwater quality can be improved in line with environmental objectives. Targeted on-farm mitigation is necessary for controlling sources of pollution to rivers; a positive impact must also be delivered at the subcatchment and catchment scales before good ecological status can be achieved. A farm on the River Sem in the Hampshire Avon Demonstration Test Catchment was selected for monitoring due to its degraded farmyard, track, and drainage ditch, which was targeted by the Demonstration Test Catchment programme for improvement using a treatment train of interventions. The river was monitored before and after, upstream and downstream, of the potential sources of pollution and subsequent mitigation, both locally at farm scale, and downstream at the subcatchment scale. Sediment was obtained from the riverbed using a conventional disturbance technique, and source samples were collected from across the subcatchment. Samples were analysed for geochemistry, mineral magnetism, and environmental radionuclide activity using the <63-μm fraction, before sediment source fingerprinting was conducted to apportion sources. Source tracing revealed that, although the degraded farm track was experiencing channelized flow and erosion in the pre-mitigation period, it was not a major sediment source even at farm scale. Repeat source apportionment during the pre- and post-mitigation periods showed that the targeted treatment train did not result in statistically significant decreases in predicted contributions from the farm track sources at either scale. The classification of sediment source groups is often the least thoroughly considered part of a sediment fingerprinting methodology; however, the use of inappropriate source groups can be the cause of significant uncertainty. In many catchments, source groups based on land use or geology are a poor fit for their geomorphological processes and the nature of the tracers used. Against this context, this study directly compared the average percentage difference in the standardised concentrations of all tracers between a sediment sample and each individual source sample, to map the similarity between the properties of sources and sediment in 3 study catchments. The environmental significance of individual tracers and their similarity between individual samples were also examined in order to identify functionally important source groups. In the River Nene, UK, the mean percentage differences between source and sediment tracer concentrations were primarily controlled by the presence of distinctive ironstone and urban sources, which had very dissimilar properties to the target sediment. However, a generally consistent trend of certain source samples having more similar properties to multiple target sediment samples than others was also found; a finding that could not be identified when using conventional source groups. In the Sywell reservoir catchment, UK, sediment originated from throughout its catchment, apart from in the case of damaged road verges, and there was little indication of any major change in sediment sources through recent time. In the Vuvu catchment, South Africa, there was a larger contribution from distal igneous sources during high-flow events. The trialled method, however, provided little advantage over the standard fingerprinting approach in this case, due to the existing good fit between catchment geomorphology, the tracers used, and the geological source groups. The method trialled herein can provide distinct advantages over the conventional fingerprinting approach and, although it should not replace it, provides a useful supplement by permitting an assessment of whether potential source groupings make best environmental sense and providing increased resolution of sediment provenance. The effective management of sediment losses in large river systems is essential for maintaining the water resources and ecosystem services they provide. However, budgetary, and logistical constraints often mean that the understanding of catchment sediment dynamics necessary to deliver targeted management is unavailable. This study trials the collection of accessible recently deposited overbank sediment and the measurement of its colour using an office document scanner to identify the evolution of sediment sources rapidly and inexpensively in two large river catchments in the UK. The River Wye catchment has experienced significant clean-up costs associated with post-flood fine sediment deposits in both rural and urban areas. In the River South Tyne, fine sand is fouling potable water extraction and fine silts degrade salmonid spawning habitats. In both catchments, samples of recently deposited overbank sediment were collected, fractionated to either <25 μm or 63-250 μm, and treated with hydrogen peroxide to remove organic matter before colour measurement. In the River Wye catchment, an increased contribution from sources over the geological units present in a downstream direction was identified and was attributed to an increasing proportion of arable land. Numerous tributaries draining different geologies allowed for overbank sediment to characterise material on this basis. In the River South Tyne catchment, a downstream change in sediment source was initially found. The River East Allen was identified as a representative and practical tributary sub-catchment for further investigation. The collection of samples of channel bank material and topsoils therein allowed channel banks to be identified as the dominant sediment source with an increasing but small contribution from topsoils in a downstream direction. The growing awareness of the environmental significance of fine-grained sediment fluxes through catchment systems continues to underscore the need for reliable information on the principal sources of this material. Source estimates are difficult to obtain using traditional monitoring techniques, but sediment source fingerprinting or tracing procedures, have emerged as a potentially valuable alternative. Despite the rapidly increasing numbers of studies reporting the use of sediment source fingerprinting, several key challenges and uncertainties continue to hamper consensus among the international scientific community on key components of the existing methodological procedures. Accordingly, this contribution reviews and presents recent developments for several key aspects of fingerprinting, namely: sediment source classification, catchment source and target sediment sampling, tracer selection, grain size issues, tracer conservatism, source apportionment modelling, and assessment of source predictions using artificial mixtures. Finally, a decision-tree representing the current state of knowledge is presented, to guide end-users in applying the fingerprinting approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excessive loss of fine-grained sediment to rivers is widely recognised as a global environmental problem. To address this issue, policy teams and catchment managers require an estimate of the ‘gap’ requiring remediation, as represented by the excess above ‘background’ losses. Accordingly, recent work has estimated the exceedance of modern ‘background’ sediment delivery to rivers at national scale across England and Wales due to (i) current agricultural land cover, cropping and stocking, and (ii) current land use corrected for the uptake of on-farm mitigation measures. This sectoral focus recognises that, nationally, agriculture has been identified as the principal source of fine sediment loss to the aquatic environment. Two estimates of modern ‘background’ sediment loss, based on paleolimnological evidence, were used in the analysis; the target modern ‘background’ (TMBSDR) and maximum modern ‘background’ (MMBSDR) sediment delivery to rivers. For individual (n = 4485) non-coastal water bodies, the sediment ‘gap’ in excess of TMBSDR and MMBSDR, due to current land cover, cropping and stocking, was estimated to range up to 1368 kg ha −1 yr −1 (median 61 kg ha −1 yr −1 ) and 1321 kg ha −1 yr −1 (median 19 kg ha −1 yr −1 ), respectively. The respective ranges in conjunction with current land cover, cropping and stocking but corrected for the potential impact of on-farm sediment mitigation measures were up to 1315 kg ha −1 yr −1 (median 50 kg ha −1 yr −1 ) and 1269 kg ha −1 yr −1 (median 8 kg ha −1 yr −1 ). Multiplication of the estimates of excess sediment loss corrected for current measure uptake, above TMBSDR and MMBSDR, with estimated maximum unit damage costs for the detrimental impacts of sediment pollution on ecosystem goods and services, suggested respective water body ranges up to 495 £ ha −1 yr −1 and 478 £ ha −1 yr −1 . Nationally, the total loss of sediment in excess of TMBSDR was estimated at 1,389,818 t yr −1 equating to maximum environmental damage costs of £523 M yr −1 , due to current structural land use, compared to 1,225,440 t yr −1 equating to maximum damage costs of £462 M yr −1 due the uptake of on-farm sediment control measures. The corresponding total loss of sediment in excess of MMBSDR was estimated at 1,038,764 t yr −1 equating to maximum damage costs of £462 M yr −1 , compared with 890,146 t yr −1 and £335 M yr −1 correcting excess agricultural sediment loss for current implementation of abatement measures supported by policy instruments. This work suggests that the current uptake of sediment control measures on farms across England and Wales is delivering limited benefits in terms of reducing loadings to rivers and associated environmental damage costs. Accessible sediment provenance information is highly desirable for guiding targeted interventions for reducing excess diffuse agricultural sediment losses to water. Conventional sediment source fingerprinting methods can provide this information, but at high cost, thereby limiting their widespread application for catchment management. The use of sediment colour measured using an office document scanner represents an easy, fast, and inexpensive alternative method to trace sediment sources. However, the potential for poor source discrimination and its non-conservatism due to enrichment in sediment organic matter content during sediment transport represent possible limitations to its use. As such, the treatment of samples using hydrogen peroxide to remove organic matter can potentially improve source discrimination based upon geology or soil type, and the mapping of differences in colour between source and sediment samples removing the need for a priori source groups, were trialled in a new colour-based tracing framework. The River Avon in southwest England and Holbeck/Wath Beck in northeast England were studied as they have been identified as being of high priority for the targeting of on-farm advice delivered through a long-running agri-environment initiative. In both catchments, colour was effective at identifying that a small proportion of each which would be considered as being low erosion risk was the dominant source of the sampled sediment. This was due to poor connectivity between fields deemed to be at high risk of erosion and stream channels. The hydrogen peroxide sample treatment confirmed that sediment colour was not significantly altered by enrichment in organic matter content. This treament and the mapped comparison between source and suspended sediment colour improved source discrimination allowing for the more spatially-refined identification of critical sediment source areas. It is argued that this new inexpensive procedure can potentially deliver more precise and reliable information to catchment managers than costly quantitative sediment source fingerprinting methods. Although traditional sediment tracing approaches provide valuable information for characterising key generic sediment sources, Catchment Officers working as part of the Catchment Sensitive Farming initiative frequently require more detailed evidence to permit improved targeting of mitigation. Accordingly, a novel framework combining conventional sediment source fingerprinting and a dual signature tracking method has recently been used to improve sediment source information for the River Glaven (~115 km2) priority catchment in eastern England. Conventional geochemical tracing incorporating a number of recent refinements to the mass balance modelling, including the combined use of local and genetic algorithm optimisation, was used to provide information on the average median relative contributions (±95% confidence limits) of generic sediment sources in three sub-catchments, categorised as grassland (1 ± 1%-12 ± 1%) or arable (25 ± 1%-46 ± 1%) surface soils, damaged road verges (2 ± 1%-50 ± 1%) and channel banks/subsurface sources (20 ± 1%-50 ± 1%) and to provide a framework for the spatial extrapolation of tracking data. Particle tracking using fluorescent-magnetic grains was used to provide preliminary sub-catchment scale information on sediment loss from key components of the primary arable topsoil and channel bank generic sources, characterised, respectively, as wheelings (18 ± 1%-33 ± 1%) or inter-wheelings (7 ± 1%-13 ± 1%) and poached (19 ± 1%-47 ± 1%) or fluvially eroded (1 ± 1%-3 ± 1%) channel margins. The insertion of high-strength magnets in watercourses ensured that the tracking component of the novel framework links sediment loss from labelled areas to river channels as opposed to providing information to edge-of-field only. Uncertainty and prior information on source contributions are explicitly recognised by the framework. This study represents the first in the UK to link wheeling sediment losses to river channels. The findings underpin the importance of compacted areas used for trafficking as sources of, and conduits for, sediment delivery in the lowland agricultural landscape of the UK. Abstract: Agricultural diffuse pollution is a significant contributor to water and air quality in many catchments and the need to control harmful emissions remains paramount for government policy. In England, the Demonstration Test Catchments (DTCs) have been established to provide a basis for testing on-farm mitigation measures using collaborative multi-partner research and some of this work is targeting the Hampshire Avon (∼1700km2) catchment. To help provide integrated farm advice across England and Wales, a new Excel-based tool, FARM Scale Optimisation of Pollutant Emission Reductions (FARMSCOPER), has recently been developed for characterising diffuse agricultural pollutant emissions from representative farm types and quantifying the expected impacts of control options on those losses to the environment. Against this background, this paper describes the application of FARMSCOPER in the Hampshire Avon DTC in order to assess its utility at catchment scale and the potential benefits of relevant and practical mitigation options. Spatial datasets and the Agricultural Census returns for 2009 specific to the River Avon catchment were integrated to produce a collection of representative farm types which capture the characteristics of the local physical environment, land use patterns and farm management practices. FARMSCOPER was used to estimate the annual emissions of nitrate, phosphorus, sediment, nitrous oxide, methane and ammonia for each representative farm type. The scenarios investigated comprised baseline losses with no mitigation measures implemented, current emissions using information on the present implementation of options under existing schemes and initiatives and, the maximum potential reduction possible on the basis of implementing all available and relevant options. Model outputs suggested that reductions in pollutant loads in response to the existing uptake of mitigation methods are small (e.g. 10% for phosphorus, 7% for sediment, 4% for nitrate and 5% for nitrous oxide). FARMSCOPER suggested that technically feasible pollutant reductions on the basis of the implementation of more mitigation options could be of the order of 47% for phosphorus, 66% for sediment, 22% for nitrate and 16% for nitrous oxide. Abstract: Sediment fingerprinting techniques provide a means of assembling valuable reliable information on the principal sources of sediment problems at catchment scale. However, there is a need to refine existing approaches to take account of a variety of sources of uncertainty and to incorporate prior information. To address this need, a modified mass balance model incorporating a Monte Carlo approach for representing the uncertainty surrounding source and sediment sampling, as well as weightings to take account of the within-source variability and discriminatory power of individual tracer properties and prior information on bank erosion, was used to apportion recent sediment sources in sub-catchments of the Somerset Levels, south west UK. Sensitivity tests confirmed that the precision of source apportionment was improved by incorporating the weightings and prior information into the mixing model. Estimates of the overall mean contributions from individual source types, bounded by 95% confidence limits, were assessed to be 42±2% (pasture topsoils), 22±2% (cultivated topsoils), 22±1% (channel banks/subsurface sources), 12±2% (damaged road verges) and 2±1% (STWs). Respective estimates of net sediment delivery to watercourses, provided by integrating the source ascription results with estimated sediment yield ranges and sub-catchment or land use areas, ranged between 33–829kgha−1 yr−1, 30–1995kgha−1 yr−1, 2–315kgha−1 yr−1, 0–217kgha−1 yr−1, and 0–28kgha−1 yr−1. Abstract: In association with a major initiative aimed at identifying policy packages for inclusion in the Programmes of Measures (POM''s) comprising EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) River Basin Management Plans (RBMP''s), recent work has evaluated the gap between current and compliant suspended sediment losses due to farming across England and Wales. The work required national scale sediment source apportionment to assess the current contributions of diffuse agricultural and urban sector losses, channel bank erosion and point source discharges to the total suspended sediment loads delivered to all rivers. Results suggested that the agricultural sector dominates present day (year 2000) sediment inputs to rivers (1929 kt=76%) compared to eroding channel banks (394 kt=15%), diffuse urban sources (147 kt=6%) and point source discharges (76 kt=3%). Projected change in farming by 2015, represented by the Business as Usual forecast of structural developments and predicted uptake of sediment mitigation methods, suggested an overall 9% reduction in sediment loss from the agricultural sector across England and Wales. The projected reduction is unlikely to deliver sediment compliance in all catchments. Key limitations of the integrated modelling approach are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The awareness of water quality issues has never been higher. As part of its continuing strategic diffuse pollution policy support, ADAS recently undertook to identify catchments across England and Wales that could potentially fail recently proposed suspended sediment yield targets under current environmental conditions. The total suspended sediment loads (SSL) delivered to all rivers were assumed to comprise contributions from diffuse sources in the agricultural and urban sectors, as well as from eroding channel banks and point sources represented by sewage treatment works (STWs). Diffuse agricultural sediment loss to rivers was predicted using the PSYCHIC model. Corresponding inputs from diffuse urban sources were estimated on the basis of an Event Mean Concentration (EMC) methodology. Channel bank sediment inputs were calculated using a prototype national scale model, while point source sediment contributions were based on a register of consented effluent discharges. Modelled SSL were validated (r 2=68%) against PARCOM data (1999–2003) for the delivery of sediment to different regions of the UK maritime area. The results of the validation were considered to be realistic for a national scale predictor. The modelling exercise suggested that those catchments currently at risk of exceeding proposed suspended sediment yield critical thresholds are largely confined to upland areas across Wales and northwest England and the chalklands of southern and eastern England. Summary: Information on suspended sediment and particulate P (PP) sources is an important requirement in many catchment-based diffuse source pollution studies, in order to assist with model validation and to provide information to support the development of effective sediment and phosphorus control strategies. Such information is, however, frequently unavailable or difficult to assemble. In the study reported, source fingerprinting procedures were successfully used to assemble this information for seven sub-catchments in the Hampshire Avon catchment and five sub-catchments in the Middle Herefordshire Wye catchment. The results provide important new information on the relative importance of the contributions from surface and channel/subsurface sources to the suspended sediment and PP fluxes from the catchments. In the Wye sub-catchments channel/subsurface sources contributed 40–55% of the overall suspended sediment flux and 21–43% of the PP flux from the catchments. Equivalent values for the Avon were 1–41% and 1–54%, respectively. Combination of the information on the relative importance of surface and channel/subsurface sources with measured suspended sediment fluxes has provided the first estimates of the specific fluxes of sediment and PP attributable to channel/subsurface sources for UK catchments. The former are as high as 15–20tkm−2 year−1 in some of the Wye sub-catchments, whereas the latter exceeded 0.1kgPha−1 year−1 in the same sub-catchments. The results emphasize the need to take account of potential contributions from channel/subsurface sources when using measured suspended sediment and PP flux data to validate predictions derived from models incorporating only surface contributions. Summary: This paper describes the preliminary evaluation of the PSYCHIC catchment scale (Tier 1) model for predicting the mobilisation and delivery of phosphorus (P) and suspended sediment (SS) in the Hampshire Avon (1715km2) and Herefordshire Wye (4017km2) drainage basins, in the UK, using empirical data. Phosphorus and SS transfers to watercourses in the Wye were predicted to be greater than corresponding delivery in the Avon; SS, 249 vs 33kgha−1 yr−1; DP, 2.57 vs 1.26kgha−1 yr−1; PP, 2.20 vs 0.56kgha−1 yr−1. The spatial pattern of the predicted transfers was relatively uniform across the Wye drainage basin, whilst in the Avon, delivery to watercourses was largely confined to the river corridors and small areas of drained land. Statistical performance in relation to predicted exports of P and SS, using criteria for relative error (RE) and root mean square error (RMSE), reflected the potential shortcomings associated with using longer-term climate data for predicting shorter-term (2002–2004) catchment response and the need to refine calculations of point source contributions and to incorporate additional river basin processes such as channel bank erosion and in-stream geochemical processing. The declining salmonid populations reported for many rivers in England and Wales have frequently been attributed to spawning gravel siltation and the need to address this problem through sediment control strategies has been widely recognised. The planning of such sediment control strategies is, however, severely hampered by the lack of reliable information on the source of the fine sediment deposited within spawning gravels. Given the need for information on the source of the fine sediment accumulating in salmonid spawning gravels, a reconnaissance survey, based on the source fingerprinting approach, has been undertaken to establish the source of fine interstitial sediment recovered from spawning gravels in 18 important salmonid rivers in England and Wales. The findings confirm the potential of the fingerprinting approach for establishing the provenance of interstitial fines. More specifically, the results provide useful information on the relative importance of surface and channel/subsurface sources as the source of the interstitial fines collected from the individual study rivers. Significant regional contrasts in the source of this sediment are reported. The findings have important implications for the design and implementation of effective sediment management strategies aimed at protecting salmonid spawning gravels, in terms of both the sources to be targeted and the associated need to adopt different approaches in different rivers. Compared with arable land, there is a paucity of field-based measurements of erosion rates and controls for lowland temperate grassland supporting ruminant agriculture. Despite this evidence gap, reducing diffuse fine sediment pollution from intensively farmed grassland has been recognised as essential for improving compliance with water quality targets. Improved information on erosion rates and controls within intensively managed lowland grazing livestock systems are prerequisites for informing best management practices for soil and water resource conservation. Accordingly, this study assembled such information using the North Wyke farm platform in south west England where flow, suspended sediment concentration, rainfall and soil moisture are monitored quasi-continuously in 15 hydrologically-isolated (1.54–11.12 ha) catchments. This region of the UK is representative of temperate lowland ruminant grazing landscapes with semi permeable soil drainage. Catchment area was the major control on both water and sediment flux. When normalised to catchment area, sediment yields were controlled by the erodibility of the catchment's soils. Ploughing for re-seeding of grass swards was the major factor that affected this. Whilst total rainfall had a small effect on sediment yields, slope and the damage of soils by livestock had no significant effects. This finding may be due to the overriding effects of ploughing and re-seeding of some fields during the study period. Detachment by impacting raindrops mobilised sediment particles across the entire field with diffuse saturation-excess overland flow responsible for their transport. The majority of erosion occurred during the rising limbs of storm events when there is an abundance of easily detached soil particles. Given that erosion and sediment transport are driven mechanistically by processes affecting the entire field areas, a reduction in sediment yield through the implementation of highly spatially-targeted in-field management such as that for feeder ring use, troughs, poached tracks or gateways would likely be very challenging. Instead, stocking density and grazing regime management, as well as carefully planned ploughing and re-seeding will be more beneficial for erosion control. • Water and sediment fluxes were strongly correlated with catchment area. • Sediment yields significantly increased after ploughing. • Rainsplash detached particles whilst saturation-excess overland flow transported them. • No significant effect of slope or soil poached by livestock on sediment generation was found. • The entire areas of each catchment are likely to be contributing sediment to the flumes. Most studies investigating fine sediment ingress in gravel-bed rivers have been conducted at the laboratory scale, and even fewer have explored the ingress processes of flocculated particles. Here, an extensive in-situ sampling programme was undertaken to investigate hydro-sedimentological drivers of interstitial fine sediment accumulation and to evaluate fine sediment ingress directional mechanisms in a gravel-bed river located on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta. Three sediment trap designs were installed across seven deployment cycles at four sites along the river. Instantaneous discharge, suspended solids concentration, and particle size distributions (of suspended and ingressed particles) were measured, while relevant hydraulic parameters were modelled with a flow model (MOBED). Distinct patterns of ingress dynamics between non-cohesive and cohesive fractions of fine sediment were observed. While the assessed hydro-sedimentological parameters did not statistically explain the ingress rates of non-cohesive 0.5 – 2 mm particles, the opposite was observed for < 0.5 mm particles, which were mostly transported in flocculated form. For flocculated sediment, horizontal ingress accounted for ∼ 60 % of interstitial accumulation. Directional ingress mechanisms, however, were dependent on flow conditions for both particle size fractions, with vertical and horizontal accumulations becoming more important during higher and lower energy flows, respectively. Our observations demonstrate the importance of ingress for the interstitial accumulation of fine sediment, even during events with flow above the critical threshold conditions for fine sediment gravitational deposition. Despite the comparable ingress rates to other studies, no interstitial clogging was observed in this study, demonstrating the channel potential storage capacity, which has implications for legacy impacts from landscape disturbances in the Crowsnest River catchment. Fine sediment inputs from agricultural sources are a potential threat to freshwater ecosystems and may impact on the ability of EU members’ states to achieve environmental targets under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). An index (the Agricultural Sediment Risk index or ASR) representing the risk of agricultural fine sediment accumulation in rivers was produced using estimates of sediment inputs from the process-based PSYCHIC model and predictions of fine sediment accumulation using River Habitat Survey data. The ASR was mapped across the entire river network of England and Wales. The ASR map and index were combined with a national dataset of fisheries surveys using logistic regression to test its relevance to freshwater biota. The ASR was strongly associated with a group of species sensitive to fine sediment inputs including salmon and trout. Another group of species including roach and perch showed a positive association with low levels of agricultural sediment inputs potentially due to their impacts on predators and competitors. The proposed approach demonstrates how existing national monitoring data and sediment pressure models can be combined to produce an assessment of risk to aquatic ecosystems from agricultural fine sediment sources at a national scale that can be used alongside WFD classification tools to identify potential causative pressures and design remedial actions. Fine sediments are known to be an important cause of increased mortality in benthic spawning fish. To date, most of the research has focussed on the relationship between embryo mortality and the quantity of fine sediment accumulated in the egg pocket. However, recent evidence suggests a) that the source of fine sediment might also be important, and b) that fitness of surviving embryos post-hatch might also be impacted by the accumulation of fine sediments. In this paper, we report an experiment designed to simulate the incubation environment of brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) and Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ). During the experiment, the incubating embryos were exposed to different quantities of fine (< 63 μm) sediment derived from four different sources; agricultural topsoils, damaged road verges, eroding river channel banks and tertiary level treated sewage. Results showed that mass and source are independently important for determining the mortality and fitness of alevin. Differences between species were observed, such that brown trout are less sensitive to mass and source of accumulated sediment. We demonstrate for the first time that sediment source is an additional control on the impact of fine sediment, and that this is primarily controlled by the organic matter content and oxygen consumption of the catchment source material.
