Time-series samples intercepted via three synchronized moored sediment traps, deployed at 1000 m, 2150 m, and 3200 m in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) during June 2009–May 2010, were analyzed to quantify the bioactive trace metal fluxes in sinking particles and investigate their different source contributions. Iron (Fe) primarily originated from lithogenic sources. Manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) exhibited various degrees of enrichment over their continental crustal ratios. Since the sources of bioactive trace metals in sinking particles can be divided into lithogenic, biogenic, and excess fractions, mass conservation calculations were used to quantify the contribution of each source. The results showed that Fe, Mn, and Co had extremely low biogenic proportions (0.1–3.3%), while Ni, Cu, and Zn had higher proportions (2.7–17.3%), with the biogenic fraction decreasing with the depth. Moreover, excess sources accounted for a significant proportion of Mn (68–75%), Co (34–54%), Ni (60–62%), Cu (59–74%), and Zn (56–65%) in sinking particles at the three sampling depths. The excess fractions of Mn, Co, and Cu in sinking particles can be affected by authigenic particles. This is supported by their similar scavenging-type behavior, as observed via the increase in their fluxes and enrichment patterns with the increasing depth. Furthermore, the excess fractions of Ni, Cu, and Zn may have significant contributions from anthropogenic sources. The variability of Fe in sinking particles was mainly controlled via lithogenic matter. Notably, organic matter and opal were found to be pivotal carriers in the export of excess bioactive trace metals (Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) via the water column, accompanied with the elevated ballast effect of lithogenic matter with the depth. However, the transportation of excess Zn was more complicated due to the intricate processes involved in Zn dynamics. Seasonal variability of diatom abundance and species composition in sinking particles in the northern South China Sea was studied using continuous time-series sediment trap moorings during a one-year period, 2009–2010. A clear seasonal pattern of diatom abundance was observed, with higher fluxes in winter than in summer. This could be related to positive response of diatom growth to increased nutrient supply from the subsurface waters as a result of enhanced vertical mixing in winter. Mesoscale eddy activities and strong Asian dust input could also stimulate the diatom growth and increase the diatom export flux to the deep South China Sea. The strong Asian dust input during spring 2010 probably accelerated the aggregation and downward flux of diatoms in the northern South China Sea. No distinctive seasonal pattern in diatom species composition was recorded, but there was a close correlation of diatom abundances with the cell size and the degree of silification. The sinking velocity of the diatom related particles from the sea surface to the deep South China Sea has been estimated to be ~30–50 m d −1 by comparing the surface chlorophyll a with the diatom abundance and species in sediment traps at 1003 m and 3226 m depths. Strong dissolution of small-sized and low-silicified diatom species and lateral advection of particles were also indicated for the deep northern South China Sea. Siliceous planktons are valuable indicators of the environmental conditions in both modern and past marine settings. However, in contrast to diatoms and radiolarians, other siliceous micro- and nanoplankton in the Arctic Ocean have been rarely explored. In this study, silicoflagellates, endoskeletal dinoflagellate Actiniscus pentasterias and chrysophyte cysts were investigated in one-year mooring sediment trap material (from August 2008 to September 2009) collected in the Northwind Ridge, western Arctic Ocean. The silicoflagellate assemblage was dominated by Stephanocha speculum , accounting for > 71% of the total silicoflagellate composition. While S. speculum was overwhelmingly abundant in summer, S. medianoctisol and S. octonari a were more frequent during winter. The export fluxes of endoskeletal dinoflagellate A. pentasterias did not show clear seasonal pattern except for a peak value in September 2009. We suggest that high flux of A. pentasterias reflects nutrient rich environment at sea ice edge rather than cold under sea ice conditions. High fluxes of chrysophyte cysts were recorded in summer 2009 peaking in late July and early August, ~10 times higher than in summer 2008. Peak of chrysophyte cysts and sea ice melting occurred simultaneously. In addition, observed encystment might be triggered by the population density, hence indicating a favorable environment for phytoplankton blooming. These siliceous micro- and nanoplankton provides information on the modern Arctic Ocean environment but requires further investigations to consolidate knowledge for robust use in paleoceanography. • First report on seasonal fluxes of chrysophyte cysts in the western Arctic. • Productive sea ice edge is indicated by Actiniscus pentasterias and chrysophyte cysts. • Silicoflagellate Stephanocha speculum reflects influence of subarctic Pacific water. • Eddy current controls the movement of particles within the mesoscale eddies. • The source funnel of sediment traps within the mesoscale eddy is tilted vertically. • A great number of particles can be transported from eddy's edge to the center. • Slow-sinking particles collected by traps could be originated from hundreds of kilometers away. The mooring tethered time-series sediment traps (TS-traps) collect sinking particles in the ocean, enabling the estimation of biological pump (BP) efficiency based on the assumption of vertical settling. However, the advection of sea water can disperse particles over long distance during the sinking process, introducing uncertainties into the estimates of BP efficiency. In the South China Sea, mesoscale eddies generate significant lateral transport above the mesopelagic zone, which has a large impact on the collecting area and source funnel of TS-traps. We studied the role of eddies in the lateral transport of sinking particles using a Lagrangian Particle Tracking Model (LPTM) which was forced by three-dimensional currents of eddy composites derived from the global Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). The eddy reanalysis using the HYCOM outputs was validated using occurrence, genesis and dissipation statistics of eddies. Backward particle tracking was performed at three stations located in the northern, central and southwestern SCS, respectively. The results indicate that the vertical sinking assumption is invalid when the particle sinking velocity is relatively low. Furthermore, the fraction of surface sources from the edge of the eddies depends on both the sinking velocity and seasonal variability of the background current. The eddy current controls the movement of particles within the eddy, and many of the particles with a sinking velocity <80 m d−1 can be transported from the edge to the eddy center. The source funnel within the mesoscale eddy is tilted vertically, leading to an asymmetrical distribution of the particle source around the trap location. Finally, for slow-sinking particles, trap-collected particles could originate from the subsurface located tens to hundreds of kilometers away from the trap location.
