PTDC/ART-HIS/29522/2017 UIDB/00749/2020 UIDP/00749/2020 DL 57/2016/CP1453/CT0070 In recent decades the medieval liturgy has attracted growing scholarly attention as an area with great potential for yielding a wealth of information at a number of levels of historical research. Where the Cistercian liturgy is concerned, due to a preoccupation with uniformity of practice across the Order, investigation not only relies on analysis of the surviving manuscripts but also on scrutiny of the legislation produced by the Cistercian General Chapter which was convened annually from the first half of the twelfth century. This paper examines some liturgical books, and books supplementary to the liturgy, which survive from the library of the Monastery of Alcobaça, comprising different sources that connect text with performance. The main goal is, through an analysis to different liturgical books, recover (partially) gestures, performances and prayers and use these sources to study and contextualize liturgical identity of this Cistercian Monastery. publishersversion published

Maria de Alcobaça, os monges foram deixando, até ao século xviii, pequenos relatos sobre acontecimentos prodigiosos, relacionados, em particular, com fenómenos naturais que lhes causaram espanto e medo. Também na sua biblioteca encontramos textos relacionados com mirabilia, copiados pelo scriptorium alcobacense, alguns traduzidos para português. A comunidade alcobacense viu-se, desde muito cedo, como uma guardiã de memórias, algumas bastante prodigiosas, vinculadas à história da sua própria fundação, quer relacionadas com o reino de Portugal. In various codices produced in the Cistercian monastery of St. Maria of Alcobaça, up to the eighteenth century, the monks left brief accounts of miraculous events, related in particular to natural phenomena that caused them astonishment and fear. In the monastery library we also find texts related to mirabilia, copied by the Alcobaça scriptorium and translated into Portuguese in some cases. The Alcobaça community saw itself, from very early on, as a guardian of memories, some quite extraordinary, linked to the history of its own foundation, or to the kingdom of Portugal. publishersversion published

Perscrutam-se, em chave de leitura diacrónica, as características e as especificidades do Mosteiro de Cós, cenóbio singular no panorama cisterciense feminino português, pela sua dependência económica e jurisdicional face à abadia masculina de Alcobaça, traçando-se, assim, o enquadramento histórico que ajuda a compreender a intervenção do abade de Claraval nesta comunidade monástica e o texto que dela resultou The discovery of an unpublished visitation record to the Monastery of Cós, carried out in 1492 by the abbot of Clairvaux, constitutes the motto for an introductory study of its origins and its community in the medieval period. The characteristics and specificities of the Monastery of Cós, a unique setting in the Portuguese female Cistercian panorama due to its economic and jurisdictional dependence on the male abbey of Alcobaça, are examined diachronically, thus tracing the historical framework which helps to understand the intervention of the abbot of Clairvaux in this monastic community and the document that resulted from it. publishersversion published

UID/HIS/00749/2019 SFRH/BPD/97963/2013 PTDC/ART-HIS/29522/2017 DL 57/2016/CP1453/CT0070 DL 57/2016/CP1453/CT0015 A partir de um inventário dos textos de cariz normativo presentes entre os códices produzidos no scriptorium do mosteiro de Alcobaça durante os séculos medievais, pretende-se equacionar a sua importância e funcionalidade, tanto na consolidação de uma unanimidade que Cister procurava construir e afirmar em torno de um mesmo ideal de vida, fiel ao espírito original da Regra de São Bento, como na reforma que, desde as primeiras décadas do século XV, se procura introduzir no cenóbio alcobacense por via de abades fortemente marcados por experiências de renovação da vida religiosa e próximos da corte régia. Atender-se-á, de forma particular, ao abaciado de Frei Estêvão de Aguiar (1431-1446) e ao seu esforço de tradução dos textos normativos fundamentais da Ordem como caminho para uma proposta renovada de vivência do ideal cisterciense. From an inventory of normative texts included among the codices produced in the scriptorium of the monastery of Alcobaça during the Middle Ages, it is intended to equate its importance and functionality, both in the consolidation of a unanimity that Cîteaux sought to build and affirm around the same ideal of life, faithful to the original spirit of the Rule of Saint Benedict, as in the reform that, from the first decades of the 15th century, is introduced into Alcobaça monastery through abbots strongly marked by experiences of religious renewal and close to the royal court. Particular attention will be given to the government of abbot Estêvão of Aguiar (1431-1446) and his effort to translate the fundamental normative texts of the Order as a path to a renewed proposal of living the Cistercian ideal. publishersversion published

UID/HIS/00749/2019 DL 57/2016/CP1453/CT0070 O presente artigo pretende analisar quatro códices litúrgicos originários do scriptorium do Mosteiro de Alcobaça, copiados entre meados do século XV e o século XVII, nomeadamente ao nível da inserção de adições textuais relativas a rituais próprios de comunidades femininas. É nossa intenção, por um lado, perceber e contextualizar a existência e os usos dados a essas adições e, por outro, compreender de que modo as referidas adições permitem um melhor conhecimento dos mosteiros cistercienses femininos e da forma pela qual o Mosteiro de Alcobaça exerce a sua jurisdição sobre os mesmos nesse período.This article concerns four liturgical codices copied in the scriptorium of the Monastery of Alcobaça between the mid-fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries. The late textual additions that concern rituals specific to Cistercian nunneries will be examined with the aim of understanding the uses of such additions in their context, and of determining their impact on our knowledge of female Cistercian monasteries and on Alcobaça’s jurisdiction over the women under its wing during this period. publishersversion published
