The article presents the results of significance analyses of selected mining and geological variables for an area of underground mining activity. The study area was a region of an underground copper ore mine located in southwest Poland. The input data consisted of satellite radar data from the Sentinel 1 mission as well as mining and geological data. The line-of-sight subsidence, calculated with the use of the small baseline subset method and arranged in time series, was decomposed to extract the vertical component. The significance analysis of individual variables for the observed surface subsidence was performed using the SHapley Additive exPlanations method for the XGBoost machine learning model. The results of the analysis showed that the observed ground surface subsidence velocities were most influenced by the thickness of the PZ3 layer, which is located approximately 200 m above the roof of the mined seam, the thickness of the seam, and the timing of mining. It was also found that the proposed model was able to detect a nonlinear relationship between the analyzed excavations. The most significant influence on ground subsidence over mine excavations are mining parameters such as the spatially averaged thickness of the deposit and the time since liquidation of the deposit. The proposed approach can be successfully employed in planning both mining operations and mine closure in such a manner that the environmental impact is minimized.

Post-emplacement dynamics of lava flows is governed by several factors such as poroelastic deformation of the substrate; gravity-induced repacking and rearrangement of the vesicle-bearing fluid lava and other void spaces by superposed flows; lava densification processes; viscoelastic strain relaxation of the ground caused by the lava load; thermal cooling and contraction of the solid lava; and discrete motion of surface blocks. Here we investigate post-emplacement lava flow dynamics at the Mt. Etna volcano, and we infer on the possible causes by exploiting optical and radar satellite data. Synthetic aperture radar data from Sentinel-1 satellite mission provided high-resolution horizontal and vertical displacement rates and displacement time series of the lava flows emplaced on the Mt. Etna volcano summit from January 2016 to July 2021. Sentinel-2 multispectral data allowed to identify the lava flows boundaries emplaced during the December 2018 and May 2019 paroxysms. Finally, high resolution COSMO-SkyMed radar data allowed to account for the topographic changes generated by the lava emplacement by means of stereo radargrammetry technique. Such an unprecedented dataset provided a full picture of the lava flow dynamics, whose kinematics is governed lava cooling, which in turn produce thermal contraction of the lava body and viscous compaction of the underlying substrate. Both phenomena act at different periods, being the thermal contraction predominant for recent lava flows. Downslope sliding is also invoked, especially for recent lava flows emplaced on high slope areas.

Understanding changes in urban internal structure and land surface temperature (LST) is essential. The local climate zone (LCZ) scheme has been extensively applied to characterize urban spatial structure, which has potential for urban climate research. We combined optical imagery and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data (Landsat-5 and PALSAR for 2008; Sentinel-2 and PALSAR-2 for 2020) to map the LCZs in Shanghai, China. The results showed that the areas of open high-rise and open mid-rise buildings significantly increased from 2008 to 2020. Then, we investigated the spatiotemporal variations in LST based on the LCZ data from 2008 to 2020 using the grid method. The mean daytime LST (obtained from Landsat-5 and Landsat-8) was higher in 2020 than in 2008 for each LCZ type in spring. The mean daytime LSTs of compact mid-rise, compact low-rise, large low-rise and heavy industry zones were higher than those of other LCZ types in spring and summer. The mean nighttime LST (obtained from ASTER) in the downtown area was higher than that in the suburbs in summer. Furthermore, the mean nighttime LST of the built types was also generally higher than that of the natural types in summer. A comparison of the mean daytime LSTs in 2008 and 2020 revealed that the expansion trend of the higher LST areas in spring and summer is consistent with the expansion areas of the mid-rise and high-rise built types.

Volcanic and Seismic source Modeling (VSM) is an open-source Python tool to model ground deformation. VSM allows the user to choose one or more deformation sources of various shapes as a forward model among sphere, spheroid, ellipsoid, rectangular dislocation, and sill. It supports multiple datasets from most satellite and terrestrial geodetic techniques: Interferometric SAR, GNSS, leveling, Electronic Distance Measurements, tiltmeters, and strainmeters. Two sampling algorithms are available: one is a global optimization algorithm based on the Voronoi cells and yields the best-fitting solution and the second follows a probabilistic approach to parameters estimation based on the Bayes theorem and the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. VSM can be executed as Python script, in Jupyter Notebook environments, or by its Graphical User Interface. Its broad applications range from high-level research to teaching, from single studies to near real-time hazard estimates. Potential users range from early-career scientists to experts. It is freely available on GitHub (https://github.com/EliTras/VSM) and is accompanied by step-by-step documentation in Jupyter Notebooks. This study presents the functionalities of VSM and test cases to describe its use and comparisons among possible settings.

This paper presents a new approach for detecting deforestation using Sentinel-1 C-band backscattering data. It is based on the temporal analysis of the backscatter intensity and its correlation with the scattering behavior of deforested plots. The backscatter intensity temporal variability is modeled with a logistic function, whose lower and upper boundaries are, respectively, set based on the representative backscatter values for forest and deforested plots. The approach also enables the identification of the date of each deforestation event, corresponding to the inflection point of the logistic curve that best fits the backscatter intensity time series. The methodology was applied to two forest biomes, a tropical forest at Iguazu National Park in Argentina and a temperate forest in the Brăila region in Romania. The optimal flattening parameter was 0.12 for both sites, with an F1-score of 0.93 and 0.71 for the tropical and temperate forests, respectively. The temporal accuracy shows a bias on the estimated date, with a slight delay of 2 months. The results reveal that the Sentinel C-band data can be successfully used for deforestation detection over tropical forests; however, the accuracy for temperate forests might be 20 pp lower, depending on the environmental conditions, such as rainfall, snow and management after logging.

Uncontrolled and unsustainable urban sprawl are altering the Earth’s surface at unprecedented rates. This research explores the potential of active remote sensors for mapping urban areas, for monitoring urban expansion processes and for depicting landscape pattern dynamics in a metropolis of South America. Based on multi-temporal urban cover maps of Cordoba, Argentina, purposely derived from COSMO-SkyMed SAR data by urban extraction algorithms, we quantified urban surface increase and described urbanization processes that occurred during 2010–2021 in sectors with different degrees of soil sealing. We extracted urban extent in four time-steps using an Urban EXTent extraction (UEXT) algorithm and quantified urban expansion, identifying newly built areas on 2.5 ha cells. For these cells, we computed urban cover and a set of landscape pattern indices (PIs), and by projecting them in a composition vs. configuration Cartesian space we performed a trajectory analysis. SAR-based urban extraction and cover change proved to be very accurate. Overall accuracy and Cohen’s Kappa statistic evidenced very high values, always above 91.58% and 0.82, respectively, for urban extraction, and also above 90.50% and 0.72 concerning the accuracy of urban expansion. Cordoba’s urban surface significantly increased (≈900 ha in 10 years) following three main spatial processes in different city sectors (e.g., edge-expansion and outlying on peri-urban areas, and infill inside the ring road), which may have contrasting effects on the sustainability of the metropolitan area. Trajectory analysis highlighted non-linear relations between the urban cover and the PIs. Areas with very low and low urban intensity underwent a steep rise of both urban cover and PI values (e.g., urban patch dimension, complexity and number), depicting urban edge-expansion and outlying processes. In the areas with medium and high urban intensity the increase in patch dimension, along with the decrease in patch number and complexity, evidence the coalescence of urban areas that incorporate in the urban fabric the remnants of non-built up zones and fill the few residual green spaces. The proposed SAR mapping procedure coupled with landscape analysis proved to be useful to detect and depict different moments of urban expansion and, pending more tests on other cities and geographical conditions, it could be postulated among the RS indicators to monitor the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.

This paper shows the efficiency of machine learning for improving land use/cover classification from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery as a tool that can be used in some sub-Saharan countries that experience frequent clouds. Indeed, we aimed to map the land use and land cover, especially in agricultural areas, using SAR C-band Sentinel-1 (S-1) time-series data over our study area, located in the Kaffrine region of Senegal. We assessed the performance and the processing time of three machine-learning classifiers applied on two inputs. In fact, we applied the random forest (RF), K-D tree K-nearest neighbor (KDtKNN), and maximum likelihood (MLL) classifiers using two separate inputs, namely a set of monthly S-1 time-series data acquired during 2020 and the principal components (PCs) of the time-series dataset. In addition, the RF and KDtKNN classifiers were processed using different tree numbers for RF (10, 15, 50, and 100) and different neighbor numbers for KDtKNN (5, 10, and 15). The retrieved land cover classes included water, shrubs and scrubs, trees, bare soil, built-up areas, and cropland. The RF classification using the S-1 time-series data gave the best performance in terms of accuracy (overall accuracy = 0.84, kappa = 0.73) with 50 trees. However, the processing time was relatively slower compared to KDtKNN, which also gave a good accuracy (overall accuracy = 0.82, kappa = 0.68). Our results were compared to the FROM-GLC, ESRI, and ESA world cover maps and showed significant improvements in some land use and land cover classes.

Crop phenology monitoring is a necessary action for precision agriculture. Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites provide us with the opportunity to monitor crop phenology at a high spatial resolution with high accuracy. The main objective of this study was to examine the potential of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data and their combination for monitoring sugarcane phenological stages and evaluate the temporal behaviour of Sentinel-1 parameters and Sentinel-2 indices. Seven machine learning models, namely logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, artificial neural network, support vector machine, naïve Bayes, and fuzzy rule based systems, were implemented, and their predictive performance was compared. Accuracy, precision, specificity, sensitivity or recall, F score, area under curve of receiver operating characteristic and kappa value were used as performance metrics. The research was carried out in the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains in the districts of Hisar and Jind, Haryana, India. The Sentinel-1 backscatters and parameters VV, alpha and anisotropy and, among Sentinel-2 indices, normalized difference vegetation index and weighted difference vegetation index were found to be the most important features for predicting sugarcane phenology. The accuracy of models ranged from 40 to 60%, 56 to 84% and 76 to 88% for Sentinel-1 data, Sentinel-2 data and combined data, respectively. Area under the ROC curve and kappa values also supported the supremacy of the combined use of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. This study infers that combined Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data are more efficient in predicting sugarcane phenology than Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 alone.

In this article, the local spatial correlation of multiple remote sensing datasets, such as those from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and digital surface models (DSMs), are linked to machine learning (ML) regression algorithms for flash floodwater depth retrieval. Edge detection filters are applied to remote sensing images to extract features that are used as independent features by ML algorithms to estimate flood depths. Data of dependent variables were obtained from the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS 2D) simulation model, as applied to the New Cairo, Egypt, post-flash flood event from 24–26 April 2018. Gradient boosting regression (GBR), random forest regression (RFR), linear regression (LR), extreme gradient boosting regression (XGBR), multilayer perceptron neural network regression (MLPR), k-nearest neighbors regression (KNR), and support vector regression (SVR) were used to estimate floodwater depths; their outputs were compared and evaluated for accuracy using the root-mean-square error (RMSE). The RMSE accuracy for all ML algorithms was 0.18–0.22 m for depths less than 1 m (96% of all test data), indicating that ML models are relatively portable and capable of computing floodwater depths using remote sensing data as an input.

The spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an effective tool to observe tropical cyclone (TC) wind fields at very high spatial resolutions. TC wind speeds can be retrieved from cross-polarization signals without wind direction inputs. This paper proposed methodologies to retrieve TC intensity parameters; for example, surface maximum wind speed, TC fullness (TCF) and central surface pressure from the European Space Agency Sentinel-1 Extra Wide swath mode cross-polarization data. First, the MS1A geophysical model function was modified from 6 to 69 m/s, based on three TC samples’ SAR images and the collocated National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stepped frequency microwave radiometer wind speed measurements. Second, we retrieved the wind fields and maximum wind speeds of 42 TC samples up to category 5 acquired in the last five years, using the modified MS1A model. Third, the TCF values and central surface pressures were calculated from the 1-km wind retrievals, according to the radial curve fitting of wind speeds and two hurricane wind-pressure models. Three intensity parameters were found to be dependent upon each other. Compared with the best-track data, the averaged bias, correlation coefficient (Cor) and root mean-square error (RMSE) of the SAR-retrieved maximum wind speeds were –3.91 m/s, 0.88 and 7.99 m/s respectively, showing a better result than the retrievals before modification. For central pressure, the averaged bias, Cor and RMSE were 1.17 mb, 0.77 and 21.29 mb and respectively, indicating the accuracy of the proposed methodology for pressure retrieval. Finally, a new symmetric TC wind field model was developed with the fitting function of the TCF values and maximum wind speeds, radial wind curve and the Rankine Vortex model. By this model, TC wind field can be simulated just using the maximum wind speed and the radius of maximum wind speed. Compared with wind retrievals, averaged absolute bias and averaged RMSE of all samples’ wind fields simulated by the new model were smaller than those of the Rankine Vortex model.

We report how data from satellite and aerial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations were integrated into monitoring of the 2014–2015 Holuhraun eruption in the Bárðarbunga volcanic system, the largest effusive eruption in Iceland since the 1783–84 Laki eruption. A lava field formed in one of the most remote areas in Iceland, after the propagation of a ∼50 km-long dyke beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap, where the Bárðarbunga caldera is located. Due to the 6 month duration of the eruption, mainly in wintertime, daily monitoring was particularly challenging. During the eruption, the European volcanological project FutureVolc was ongoing, allowing collaboration of many European experts on volcano monitoring activities. Icelandic volcanoes are also a permanent Supersite within the Geohazard Supersites and Natural Laboratories (GSNL) initiative, with support from the Committee on Earth Observation Satellite (CEOS) in the form of a large collection of SAR images. SAR data were acquired by Cosmo-SkyMed (CSK) and TerraSAR-X (TSX) satellites and complemented by aerial SAR images. The large set of SAR satellite data significantly contributed to the daily monitoring during the unrest at Bárðarbunga caldera, the Holuhraun eruption and the year following the eruption. Detection of surface changes using both SAR amplitude and phase information was conducted throughout the whole duration of the volcano-tectonic event, and in the following months, to quantify and track the evolution of volcanic processes at Holuhraun and geothermal activity at Bárðarbunga volcano. Combination of SAR data with other data sets, e.g., satellite optical images and geodetic Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements, was essential for the evaluation of the volcanic hazard in the whole area. International collaboration within the FutureVolc project formed the basis for successful analyses and interpretation of the large SAR data set. Information was provided at Scientific Advisory Board meetings of the Icelandic Civil Protection and used in decision-making, as well as for supporting field-deployment and air-based surveys.

Beyond the variety of unwanted disruptions that appear quite frequently in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) measurements, radio-frequency interference (RFI) is one of the most challenging issues due to its various forms and sources. Unfortunately, over the years, this problem has grown worse. RFI artifacts not only hinder processing of SAR data, but also play a significant role when it comes to the quality, reliability, and accuracy of the final outcomes. To address this issue, a robust, effective, and—importantly—easy-to-implement method for identifying RFI-affected images was developed. The main aim of the proposed solution is the support of the automatic permanent scatters in SAR (PSInSAR) processing workflow through the exclusion of contaminated SAR data that could lead to misinterpretation of the calculation results. The approach presented in this paper for the purpose of recognition of these specific artifacts is based on deep learning. Considering different levels of image damage, we used three variants of a LeNet-type convolutional neural network. The results show the high efficiency of our model used directly on sample data.

Earth observation (EO) has an immense potential as being an enabling tool for mapping spatial characteristics of the topsoil layer. Recently, deep learning based algorithms and cloud computing infrastructure have become available with a great potential to revolutionize the processing of EO data. This paper aims to present a novel EO-based soil monitoring approach leveraging open-access Copernicus Sentinel data and Google Earth Engine platform. Building on key results from existing data mining approaches to extract bare soil reflectance values the current study delivers valuable insights on the synergistic use of open access optical and radar images. The proposed framework is driven by the need to eliminate the influence of ambient factors and evaluate the efficiency of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to effectively combine the complimentary information contained in the pool of both optical and radar spectral information and those form auxiliary geographical coordinates mainly for soil. We developed and calibrated our multi-input CNN model based on soil samples (calibration = 80% and validation 20%) of the LUCAS database and then applied this approach to predict soil clay content. A promising prediction performance (R2 = 0.60, ratio of performance to the interquartile range (RPIQ) = 2.02, n = 6136) was achieved by the inclusion of both types (synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and laboratory visible near infrared–short wave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) multispectral) of observations using the CNN model, demonstrating an improvement of more than 5.5% in RMSE using the multi-year median optical composite and current state-of-the-art non linear machine learning methods such as random forest (RF; R2 = 0.55, RPIQ = 1.91, n = 6136) and artificial neural network (ANN; R2 = 0.44, RPIQ = 1.71, n = 6136). Moreover, we examined post-hoc techniques to interpret the CNN model and thus acquire an understanding of the relationships between spectral information and the soil target identified by the model. Looking to the future, the proposed approach can be adopted on the forthcoming hyperspectral orbital sensors to expand the current capabilities of the EO component by estimating more soil attributes with higher predictive performance.

A method is proposed for the production of downscaled soil moisture active passive (SMAP) soil moisture (SM) data by combining optical/infrared data with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data based on the random forest (RF) model. The method leverages the sensitivity of active microwaves to surface SM and the triangle/trapezium feature space among vegetation indexes (VIs), land surface temperature (LST), and SM. First, five RF architectures (RF1−RF5) were trained and tested at 9 km. Second, a comparison was performed for RF1−RF5, and were evaluated against in situ SM measurements. Third, two SMAP-Sentinel active−passive SM products were compared at 3 km and 1 km using in situ SM measurements. Fourth, the RF5 model simulations were compared with the SMAP L2_SM_SP product based on the optional algorithm at 3 km and 1 km resolutions. The results showed that the downscaled SM based on the synergistic use of optical/infrared data and the backscatter at vertical−vertical (VV) polarization was feasible in semi-arid areas with relatively low vegetation cover. The RF5 model with backscatter and more parameters from optical/infrared data performed best among the five RF models and was satisfactory at both 3 km and 1 km. Compared with L2_SM_SP, RF5 was more superior at 1 km. The input variables in decreasing order of importance were backscatter, LST, VIs, and topographic factors over the entire study area. The low vegetation cover conditions probably amplified the importance of the backscatter and LST. A sufficient number of VIs can enhance the adaptability of RF models to different vegetation conditions.

In the framework of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) Mapping Validation, the applicability of the MultiTemporal Coherence (MTC) technique using Sentinel-1 data and the software made available by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP), for the detection and delineation of burnt areas was tested. The main purpose of the study was to test a methodology that would benefit from the advantages of delineating burnt areas based on radar data with respect to optical data due to its capacity to acquire data both night and day and to avoid the interference of clouds and/or smoke. Moreover, the study aimed to acheive the delineation of the burnt areas using Sentinel-1 and SNAP in the frame of an emergency mapping where processing time is constrained due to the necessity of giving a quick response to the emergency. Four Sentinel-1 images were acquired over a mountainous area mainly covered by Mediterranean vegetation that suffered from massive forest fires in the summer of 2016. The burnt area delineation was obtained by an object-based image analysis (OBIA) of the resulting MTC image followed by a visual inspection. The effects of the polarization, the acquisition mode, and the incidence angle of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery were studied in order to assess the contribution of these sensor varaibles on the results. Results of the Sentinel-1 based delineation were compared to those using optical imagery, which is traditionally used for this application. Therefore, the fire delineation that was derived was compared to that derived using three optical images: pre- and post-event Sentinel-2 images and a post-event SPOT 6 image. The first two were used to calculate the differences of the burnt area index (dBAI), used to derive the burnt area delineation by OBIA and photo interpretation with the help of the SPOT 6 image. Results of the comparison showed the feasibility of using the MTC technique for burnt area delineation, as high overall accuracy values were observed when compared to the burnt area delineation derived from optical imagery. The importance of the incidence angle of the Sentinel-1 images was assessed as well, with lower angles resulting in higher overall accuracies. In addition, the availability of double polarization of the Sentinel-1 images, allowed us to give recommendations regarding which polarization gave the best results. The potential for the use of SAR data, obtaining equivalent results to those obtained from optical imagery, is significant in an emergency context given that radar sensors acquire images continuosly and in all weather conditions.

Landslides are considered to be one of the main natural geohazards causing relevant economic damages and social effects worldwide. Italy is one of the countries worldwide most affected by landslides; in the Region of Tuscany alone, more than 100,000 phenomena are known and mapped. The possibility to recognize, investigate, and monitor these phenomena play a key role to avoid further occurrences and consequences. The number of applications of Advanced Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (A-DInSAR) analysis for landslides monitoring and mapping greatly increased in the last decades thanks to the technological advances and the development of advanced processing algorithms. In this work, landslide-induced damage on structures recognized and classified by field survey and velocity of displacement re-projected along the steepest slope were combined in order to extract fragility curves for the hamlets of Patigno and Coloretta, in the Zeri municipality (Tuscany, northern Italy). Images using ERS1/2, ENVISAT, COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) and Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) were employed to investigate an approximate 25 years of deformation affecting both hamlets. Three field surveys were conducted for recognizing, identifying, and classifying the landslide-induced damage on structures and infrastructures. At the end, the damage probability maps were designed by means of the use of the fragility curves between Sentinel-1 velocities and recorded levels of damage. The results were conceived to be useful for the local authorities and civil protection authorities to improve the land managing and, more generally, for planning mitigation strategies.

In this paper, the results of a comparison between the soil moisture content (SMC) estimated from C-band SAR, the SMC simulated by a hydrological model, and the SMC measured on ground are presented. The study was carried out in an agricultural test site located in North-west Italy, in the Scrivia river basin. The hydrological model used for the simulations consists of a one-layer soil water balance model, which was found to be able to partially reproduce the soil moisture variability, retaining at the same time simplicity and effectiveness in describing the topsoil. SMC estimates were derived from the application of a retrieval algorithm, based on an Artificial Neural Network approach, to a time series of ENVISAT/ASAR images acquired over the Scrivia test site. The core of the algorithm was represented by a set of ANNs able to deal with the different SAR configurations in terms of polarizations and available ancillary data. In case of crop covered soils, the effect of vegetation was accounted for using NDVI information, or, if available, for the cross-polarized channel. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of multifrequency and Full-polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for retrieving both Above Ground Biomass (AGB) and Leaf Area Index (LAI) in the Amazon floodplain forest environment. Two specific questions were proposed: (a) Does multifrequency SAR data perform more efficiently than single-frequency data in estimating LAI and AGB of várzea forests?; and (b) Are quad-pol SAR data more efficient than single- and dual-pol SAR data in estimating LAI and AGB of várzea forest? To answer these questions, data from different sources (TerraSAR-X Multi Look Ground Range Detected (MGD), Radarsat-2 Standard Qual-Pol, advanced land observing satellite (ALOS)/ phased-arrayed L-band SAR (PALSAR-1). Fine-beam dual (FDB) and quad Polarimetric mode) were combined in 10 different scenarios to model both LAI and AGB. A R-platform routine was implemented to automatize the selection of the best regression models. Results indicated that ALOS/PALSAR variables provided the best estimates for both LAI and AGB. Single-frequency L-band data was more efficient than multifrequency SAR. PALSAR-FDB HV-dB provided the best LAI estimates during low-water season. The best AGB estimates at high-water season were obtained by PALSAR-1 quad-polarimetric data. The top three features for estimating AGB were proportion of volumetric scattering and both the first and second dominant phase difference between trihedral and dihedral scattering, extracted from Van Zyl and Touzi decomposition, respectively. The models selected for both AGB and LAI were parsimonious. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSEcv), relative overall RMSEcv (%) and R2 value for LAI were 0.61%, 0.55% and 13%, respectively, and for AGB, they were 74.6 t·ha−1, 0.88% and 46%, respectively. These results indicate that L-band (ALOS/PALSAR-1) has a high potential to provide quantitative and spatial information about structural forest attributes in floodplain forest environments. This potential may be extended not only with PALSAR-2 data but also to forthcoming missions (e.g., NISAR, Global Ecosystems Dynamics Investigation Lidar (GEDI), BIOMASS, Tandem-L) for promoting wall-to-wall AGB mapping with a high level of accuracy in dense tropical forest regions worldwide.
