Abstract A diversified diet in early childhood that comprises plant and animal source foods contributes to better health outcomes throughout the life course. However, inadequate infant and young child-feeding practices are serious public health problems in Africa. Evidence on the magnitude and determinants of inadequate animal source food consumption (ASF) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is not yet well established. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the pooled magnitude and determinants of ASF consumption in SSA. BackgroundAlthough the Surgery, Antibiotic, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement (SAFE) strategy was adopted in Ethiopia over the last five years, there is still a high incidence of trachoma in areas with poor hygiene. In Ethiopia, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted before the implementation of SAFE implying, a need for the update. Therefore, this review gives the updated pooled prevalence and associated factors of active trachoma in Ethiopia after the implementation of SAFE.MethodThe literature search was performed from PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, HINARI, Scopus, and Web of Sciences from January 1-30, 2024. Data were extracted by using a pre-tested and standardized data extraction format and analyzed using STATA 17 statistical software. I2 tests to appraise the heterogeneity across the included studies, a random-effect model to estimate the pooled prevalence, and a sub-group analysis to discern the viable source of heterogeneity were executed. Potential publication bias was also assessed by funnel plot, Egger's weighted correlation, and Begg's regression. The odds ratio with its 95% confidence was used to reckon the association between the prevalence and factors.ResultFrom 504 identified studies, 20 articles were included. After the SAFE intervention, the national pooled prevalence of active trachoma among children was 21.16% (95% CI 17.28, 25.04). Fly-eye contact(Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.83, 95% CI: 2.25, 6.52), facial uncleanliness(AOR = 5.48, 95% CI: 3.02, 9.96), non-utilization of latrine (AOR = 3.30, 95% CI: 2.10, 5.18), and retrieving water from river(AOR = 2.94; 95%CI: 1.42, 6.05) were significantly associated with active trachoma.ConclusionIn Ethiopia, the pooled prevalence of active trachoma after SAFE intervention was much higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) threshold prevalence. It continues to pose a significant public health concern and is far from the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem. Fly-eye contact, facial cleanliness, latrine utilization, and source of water increase the odds of active trachoma. Therefore, it is imperative to fine-tune the intervention focus on personal hygiene-related activities in removing dirt, fly-eye contact, and a well-structured approach for both constructing and ensuring the functionality of household taps and latrines. Additionally, It is crucial to initiate a reliable SAFE intervention in Ethiopia.

Abstract Nutritional status is considered a major diagnostic and prognostic indicator of HIV/AIDS in adults. In this aspect, current HIV-treatment guidelines, particularly in low-income countries, recommend the regular monitoring of body mass index (BMI) to determine patients' clinical response to antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, data regarding the change in BMI status of HIV-positive adults on ART following the implementation of the test and treat strategy were limited in Ethiopia. Hence, this study is aimed at investigating the trends of BMI change over time and its associated factors among HIV-positive adults in Northwest Ethiopia. A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted among 404 randomly selected HIV-positive adults receiving ART in Felegehiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (FHCSH), Northern Ethiopia. Abstract Malnutrition is more prevalent among children with cerebral palsy and a major factor for child morbidity and mortality in children with different co-morbidity, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa: The main aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the burden of malnutrition among children with cerebral palsy in Sub-Saharan Africa. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Research Gate, and institutional repositories for papers that reported the proportion of malnutrition among children with cerebral palsy that were published between December 2010 and September 2023. Data were retrieved using the standardized JBI data extraction checklist through Microsoft Excel, and then exported to STATA 17 for further analysis. DerSimonian and Laird’s estimator was used to calculate the pooled effect size in the random-effects model. Statistics such as the Cochran Q test and I2 test were employed to measure heterogeneity. Egger's test and the funnel plot were used to look for publication bias. This systematic review and meta-analysis used 16 studies from Sub-Saharan Africa to estimate the proportion of malnutrition among 2,120 children with cerebral palsy. The pooled proportion of malnutrition among children with cerebral palsy in Sub-Saharan Africa by using random-effects model analysis was found to be 59.7% (95% CI; 49.8–69.6). The proportion of malnutrition was also estimated by sample sizes categorized as ≤ 120 and > 120, and the proportion of malnutrition was found to be 54.0 (95% CI: 44.7–63.3) and 64.5 (95% CI: 50.5–78.5). Moreover, the proportion of malnutrition was estimated by accounting for the difference in the year of publication. In this regard, the study classified before ≤ 2017 and > 2017, and the proportion of malnutrition was found to be 53.7 (95% CI: 38.0–69.3) and 62.5 (95% CI: 49.7–75.3) in Sub-Saharan Africa respectively. Malnutrition among children with cerebral in Sub-Saharan Africa was found to be very high. Hence, enhancing and developing strategic guidelines for malnutrition screening, prevention, and nutritional support are crucial among children with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, systematic review, randomized control trials, and qualitative studies are recommended to understand the burden more among children with cerebral palsy in the continent.

Abstract Teenage is a time of transition from childhood to adulthood. This stage is a time of change and needs particular care and ongoing support. Adolescent pregnancy remains a common health care problem in low- and middle-income countries, and it is associated with higher maternal and neonatal complications. Thus, this study aimed to determine the trends and factors associated with them that either positively or negatively contributed to the change in teenage pregnancy in Ethiopia. Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data from 2005 to 2016 were used for this study. A total weighted sample of 10,655 (3265 in 2005, 4009 in 2011, and 3381 in 2016) teenagers was included. Trends and the proportion of teenage pregnancies for each factor over time were explored. Then, a logit-based multivariate decomposition analysis for a non-linear response model was fitted to identify the factors that contributed to the change in teenage pregnancy. IntroductionSexual behaviour needs to take a central position in the heart of public health policy makers and researchers. This is important in view of its association with Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including HIV. Though the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is declining in Ethiopia, the country is still one of the hardest hit in the continent of Africa. Hence, this study was aimed at identifying hot spot areas and associated factors of risky sexual behavior (RSB). This would be vital for more targeted interventions which can produce a sexually healthy community in Ethiopia.MethodsIn this study, a cross-sectional survey study design was employed. A further analysis of the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey data was done on a total weighted sample of 10,518 women and men age 15-49 years. ArcGIS version 10.7 and Kuldorff's SaTScan version 9.6 software were used for spatial analysis. Global Moran's I statistic was employed to test the spatial autocorrelation, and Getis-Ord Gi* as well as Bernoulli-based purely spatial scan statistics were used to detect significant spatial clusters of RSB. Mixed effect multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to identify predictors and variables with a p-value ≤0.05 were considered as statistically significant.ResultThe study subjects who had RSB were found to account about 10.2% (95% CI: 9.64%, 10.81%) of the population, and spatial clustering of RSB was observed (Moran's I = 0.82, p-value = 0.001). Significant hot spot areas of RSB were observed in Gambela, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. The primary and secondary SaTScan clusters were detected in Addis Ababa (RR = 3.26, LLR = 111.59, PConclusionIn this study, spatial clustering of risky sexual behaviour was observed in Ethiopia, and hot spot clusters were detected in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and Gambela regions. Therefore, interventions which can mitigate RSB should be designed and implemented in the identified hot spot areas of Ethiopia. Interventions targeting the identified factors could be helpful in controlling the problem.

BackgroundGlobally, with a neonatal mortality rate of 27/1000 live births, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate in the world and is responsible for 43% of all infant fatalities. In the first week of life, almost three-fourths of neonatal deaths occur and about one million babies died on their first day of life. Previous studies lack conclusive evidence regarding the overall estimate of early neonatal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this review aimed to pool findings reported in the literature on magnitude of early neonatal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa.MethodsThis review's output is the aggregate of magnitude of early neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Up until June 8, 2023, we performed a comprehensive search of the databases PubMed/Medline, PubMed Central, Hinary, Google, Cochrane Library, African Journals Online, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The studies were evaluated using the JBI appraisal check list. STATA 17 was employed for the analysis. Measures of study heterogeneity and publication bias were conducted using the I2 test and the Eggers and Beggs tests, respectively. The Der Simonian and Laird random-effect model was used to calculate the combined magnitude of early neonatal mortality. Besides, subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and meta regression were carried out to identify the source of heterogeneity.ResultsFourteen studies were included from a total of 311 articles identified by the search with a total of 278,173 participants. The pooled magnitude of early neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa was 80.3 (95% CI 66 to 94.6) per 1000 livebirths. Ethiopia had the highest pooled estimate of early neonatal mortality rate, at 20.1%, and Cameroon had the lowest rate, at 0.5%. Therefore, governmental and nongovernmental agencies, international organizations, healthcare providers and institutions and academic and research institutions should give a due attention and design strategies to reduce early neonatal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa.

IntroductionMulti-drug resistant tuberculosis has impeded tuberculosis prevention and control due to its low treatment efficiency and prolonged infectious periods. Early culture conversion status has long been used as a predictor of good treatment outcomes and an important infection control metric, as culture-negative patients are less likely to spread tuberculosis. There is also evidence that suggests that delayed sputum conversion is linked to negative outcomes. Therefore, this study was aimed at developing a nomogram to predict the risk of late culture conversion in patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis using readily available predictors.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to develop and validate a risk prediction nomogram for the prediction of late culture conversion among multi-drug resistant tuberculosis patients in North-West Ethiopia.MethodsMulti-drug resistant tuberculosis data from the University of Gondar and the Debre Markos referral hospitals have been used and a total of 316 patients were involved. The analysis was carried out using STATA version 16 and R version 4.0.5 statistical software. Based on the binomial logistic regression model, a validated simplified risk prediction model (nomogram) was built, and its performance was evaluated by assessing its discriminatory power and calibration. Finally, decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to assess the generated model's clinical and public health impact.ResultsRegistration group, HIV co-infection, baseline BMI, baseline sputum smear grade, and radiological abnormalities were prognostic determinants used in the construction of the nomogram. The model has a discriminating power of 0.725 (95% CI: 0.669, 0.781) and a P-value of 0.665 in the calibration test. It was internally validated using the bootstrapping method, and it was found to perform similarly to the model developed on the entire dataset. The decision curve analysis revealed that the model has better clinical and public health impact than other strategies specified.ConclusionThe developed nomogram, which has a satisfactory level of accuracy and good calibration, can be utilized to predict late culture conversion in MDR-TB patients. The model has been found to be useful in clinical practice and is clinically interpretable.

IntroductionVisual impairment is a major public health problem in developing countries where there is no enough health-care service. It has a significant impact on the affected child's psychological, educational and socioeconomic experiences, during childhood and beyond. Therefore, the aim of this review was to estimate the pooled prevalence of visual impairment and its associated factors among children in Ethiopia.MethodThis systematic review and meta-analysis was designed based on the PRISMA guidelines. Relevant published articles in Ethiopia from 2011-2021 were searched in PubMed/Medline, HINARI, Google scholar, and conference paper and thesis or research final reports were accessed from Ethiopian Universities' repositories. Data was extracted in Microsoft excel by using JBI data extraction checklist. The pooled prevalence and odds ratio of associated factors with their 95% CI was computed by using STATA 14/SE software. A fixed effect meta-analysis model was employed for a Cochrane Q test statistic and I2 test showed there was no heterogeneity in the included studies.ResultA total of 7,647 children from nine studies were included in this study. The overall prevalence of visual impairment among children in Ethiopia was 7% (95% CI: 6, 7%). The pooled prevalence of visual impairment by region was almost similar in Ethiopia. However, there was no significant association between the identified factors and visual impairment among children. But the result showed that being males (AOR 0.642, 95% CI: 0.357-1.156), Children in the age of 10-13 years (AOR 0.224, 95% CI: 0.046-1.102) and 14-18 years (AOR 0.508, 95% CI: 0.102-2.534) were found to be less likely to have visual impairment. On the other hand, children of parents with visual impairment (AOR 1.820, 95% CI: 0.381-8.698) more likely to have visual impairment.ConclusionVisual impairment among children in Ethiopia is still a public health problem one year later to VISION 2020, a global initiative aimed to eliminate avoidable blindness. All most one out of fourteen children in Ethiopia had visual impairment. Therefore, the government of Ethiopia should focus on effective, efficient, comprehensive eye health care services by integrating with the national health system to prevent avoidable visual impairment among children.
