Small ribosomal protein subunit S7 (RPS7) has been reported to be associated with various malignancies, but the role of RPS7 in ovarian cancer remains unclear. In this study, we found that silencing of RPS7 by a specific shRNA promoted ovarian cancer cell proliferation, accelerated cell cycle progression, and slightly reduced cell apoptosis and response to cisplatin treatment. Knockdown of RPS7 resulted in increased expression of P85α, P110α, and AKT2. Although the basal levels of ERK1/2, MEK1/2, and P38 were inconsistently altered in ovarian cancer cells, the phosphorylated forms of MEK1/2 (Ser217/221), ERK1/2 (Thr202/Tyr204), JNK1/2 (Thr183/Tyr185), and P38 (Thr180/Tyr182) were consistently reduced after RPS7 was silenced. Both the in vitro anchorage-independent colony formation and in vivo animal tumor formation capability of cells were enhanced after RPS7 was depleted. We also showed that silencing of RPS7 enhanced ovarian cancer cell migration and invasion. In sum, our results suggest that RPS7 suppresses ovarian tumorigenesis and metastasis through PI3K/AKT and MAPK signal pathways. Thus, RPS7 may be used as a potential marker for diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.

Abstract Adolescents in affluent nations have experienced a decline in sleep duration, associated with adverse outcomes such as behavioral issues and health concerns. However, the connection between sleep and mental well-being during adolescence, particularly in developing regions like rural China, remains underexplored. A cross-sectional study of 18,516 adolescents in 124 junior high schools in Ningxia, China, utilized the strengths and difficulties questionnaire to assess mental health. The findings highlighted a complex, nonlinear link between sleep duration and mental health, with a U-shaped trend for overall difficulties and an inverse U-shape for prosocial behavior. The study also explored potential mechanisms behind these relationships, suggesting that time allocation to activities such as screen time and outdoor activities could mediate the effects of sleep duration on mental health. Longer sleep durations could lead to less screen time and more outdoor engagement, both of which positively affect mental well-being. Balanced sleep duration is crucial for adolescent mental health. The study calls for interventions to improve sleep hygiene and mental health services in rural areas, emphasizing the need for policy support to address sleep deprivation and its impact on mental well-being.

Abstract Ruthenium (Ru) is widely recognized as a low-cost alternative to iridium as anode electrocatalyst in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). However, the reported Ru-based catalysts usually only operate within tens of hours in PEMWE because of their intrinsically high reactivity of lattice oxygen that leads to irrepressible Ru leaching and structural collapse. Herein, we report a design concept by employing large-sized and acid-resistant lattice lead (Pb) as a second element to induce a pinning effect for effectively narrowing the moving channels of oxygen atoms, thereby lowering the reactivity of lattice oxygen in Ru oxides. The Pb-RuO2 catalyst presents a low overpotential of 188 ± 2 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and can sustain for over 1100 h in an acid medium with a negligible degradation rate of 19 μV h−1. Particularly, the Pb-RuO2-based PEMWE can operate for more than 250 h at 500 mA cm−2 with a low degradation rate of only 17 μV h−1. Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that Ru-O covalency is reduced due to the unique 6s−2p−4d orbital hybridization, which increases the loss energy of lattice oxygen and suppresses the over-oxidation of Ru for improved long-term stability in PEMWE.

Abstract With growing recognition of the importance of community engagement in addressing public health challenges, its role in promoting healthy behaviors and preventing infectious diseases has gained attention. However, vaccination coverage remains a significant concern in many developing countries. While previous studies have linked community engagement to positive health outcomes, there is a gap in understanding its influence on individual vaccination choices, particularly in the context of developing countries. Utilizing data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this study examines the impact of community engagement on COVID-19 and flu vaccination uptake among 7281 individuals. Community engagement, measured by community vaccination notifications, serves as the key independent variable. The study employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and Propensity Score Matching (PSM) methods to analyze the relationship between community engagement and vaccination behavior. The analysis reveals a positive association between community engagement and vaccination rates. Specifically, individuals receiving notifications were more likely to get the COVID-19 vaccine compared to non-recipients (vaccination rates: 100% vs. 53.3%), and flu vaccination rates were also significantly higher among those notified (2.7% vs. 1.9%). Mechanism analysis suggests that individuals receiving community notifications are more aware of the benefits of vaccination, leading to higher vaccination rates among this group. This study underscores the effectiveness of community engagement strategies in promoting positive vaccination behavior among individuals in China. By enhancing awareness and trust in immunization, community engagement initiatives play a crucial role in shaping health behaviors and improving vaccination uptake. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating community engagement approaches into public health interventions to address vaccination challenges.

With the continuous advancement of high-resolution satellite technology, the impact of thermal deformation on the performance of star cameras is becoming more significant, particularly in relation to installation conditions and orbital environments. To address this challenge, an in-depth investigation of the thermal design of a star camera is conducted in this study. The thermal deformation of this camera is evaluated systematically through simulation analysis, thermal balance tests, and on-orbit temperature measurements. In addition, a simulation analysis is used to identify and quantitatively evaluate the thermal deformation error sources that affect the spatial attitude measurement accuracy of the star camera. The results indicate that thermal deformations of the optical system, the mounting surface of the star camera, and the support significantly impact on-orbit measurement accuracy. Ultimately, the limit error attributable to on-orbit thermal deformation is determined to be 0.62″. In the thermal balance experiments, the maximum absolute difference between the test results and the thermal simulation analysis results is under 1.8 °C. Additionally, analysis of the orbital temperature data reveals that the maximum absolute difference between the orbital results and the thermal simulation results is 1.18 °C, while the attitude accuracy of the star sensor is better than 0.54″. These findings validate the effectiveness of the thermal design and the accuracy of the thermal simulation analysis. The analysis of error sources presented in this paper offers crucial insights for effectively controlling the thermal deformation errors of star cameras and lays the groundwork for optimizing overall thermal design.

Abstract Ligand effect, induced by charge transfer between catalytic surface and substrate in core/shell structure, was widely proved to benefit Pt-catalyzed oxygen reduction reaction by tuning the position of d-band center of Pt theoretically. However, ligand effect is always convoluted by strain effect in real core/shell nanostructure; therefore, it remains experimentally unknown whether and how much the ligand effect solely contributes electrocatalytic activity improvements. Herein, we report precise synthesis of a kind of Pd3Ru1/Pt core/shell nanoplates with exclusive ligand effect for oxygen reduction reaction. Layer-by-layer growth of Pt overlayers onto Pd3Ru1 nanoplates can guarantee no lattice mismatch between core and shell because the well-designed Pd3Ru1 has the same lattice parameters as Pt. Electron transfer, due to the exclusive ligand effect, from Pd3Ru1 to Pt leads to a downshift of d-band center of Pt. The optimal Pd3Ru1/Pt1-2L nanoplates achieve excellent activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline/acid electrolyte.

Abstract Accurate ultra‐short‐term wind speed prediction is extremely important for the power control of wind farms, the safe dispatch of power systems, and the stable operation of power grids. At present, most wind farms mainly rely on supervisory control and data acquisition systems to obtain operation and maintenance data which includes operating characteristics of wind turbines. In the ultra‐short‐term wind speed prediction, a long short‐term memory network is one of the commonly used deep learning methods. To address the problem that improper selection of long short‐term memory network's hyperparameters may affect the prediction results, In the present study, a hybrid prediction model based on the long short‐term memory and the modified tuna swarm optimization algorithm was established, and was used to predict after the wind speed sample data had been decomposed by successive variational mode decomposition method. The experimental results reveal that the proposed model effectively improved the accuracy of wind speed prediction for wind farms compared with the support vector regression, deep belief networks, and long short‐term memory models optimized by particle swarm optimization algorithm.

Summary: As a potential druggable nuclear receptor, steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1) regulates obesity and insulin resistance in the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus. Herein, we sought to demonstrate its expression and functions in islets in the development of obesity-induced diabetes. SF1 was barely detected in the beta cells of lean mice but highly expressed in those of non-diabetic obese mice, while decreased in diabetic ones. Conditional deletion of SF1 in beta cells predisposed diet-induced obese (DIO) mice to glucose intolerance by perturbing glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Consistently, forced expression of SF1 restored favorable glucose homeostasis in DIO and db/db mice by improving GSIS. In isolated islets and MIN6, overexpression of SF1 also potentiated GSIS, mediated by improvement of mitochondrial ATP production. The underlying mechanisms may involve oxidative phosphorylation and lipid metabolism. Collectively, SF1 in beta cell preserves GSIS to promote beta-cell adaptation to obesity and hence is a potential therapeutic target for obesity-induced diabetes.

Co-fermentation of lignite and biomass has been considered as a new approach in achieving clean energy. Moreover, the study of the characteristics of solid phase in the synergistic degradation process is of great significance in revealing their synergistic relationship. Accordingly, in order to produce biogas, lignite, straw, and the mixture of the two were used as the substrates, the solid phase characteristics of which were analyzed before and after fermentation using modern analytical methods. The results revealed that the mixed fermentation of lignite and straw promoted the production of biomethane. Moreover, the ratios of C/O and C/H were found to be complementary in the co-fermentation process. Furthermore, while the relative content of C-C/C-H bonds was observed to be significantly decreased, the aromatics degree of lignite was weakened. Also, while the degree of branching increased, there found to be an increase in the content of cellulose amorphous zone, which, consequently, led to an increase in the crystallinity index of the wheat straw. Hence, the results provide a theoretical guidance for the efficient utilization of straw and lignite.

Abstract Gastro-esophageal (GE) cancers are one of the major causes of cancer-related death in the world. There is a need for novel biomarkers in the management of GE cancers, to yield predictive response to the available therapies. Our study aims to identify leading genes that are differentially regulated in patients with these cancers. We explored the expression data for those genes whose protein products can be detected in the plasma using the Cancer Genome Atlas to identify leading genes that are differentially regulated in patients with GE cancers. Our work predicted several candidates as potential biomarkers for distinct stages of GE cancers, including previously identified CST1, INHBA, STMN1, whose expression correlated with cancer recurrence, or resistance to adjuvant therapies or surgery. To define the predictive accuracy of these genes as possible biomarkers, we constructed a co-expression network and performed complex network analysis to measure the importance of the genes in terms of a ratio of closeness centrality (RCC). Furthermore, to measure the significance of these differentially regulated genes, we constructed an SVM classifier using machine learning approach and verified these genes by using receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve as an evaluation metric. The area under the curve measure was > 0.9 for both the overexpressed and downregulated genes suggesting the potential use and reliability of these candidates as biomarkers. In summary, we identified leading differentially expressed genes in GE cancers that can be detected in the plasma proteome. These genes have potential to become diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for early detection of cancer, recurrence following surgery and for development of targeted treatment.

Woody encroachment in grasslands has become increasingly problematic globally. Grazing by domestic animals can facilitate woody encroachment by reducing competition from herbaceous plants and fire frequency. Herbivorous insects and parasitic plants can each exert forces that result in the natural biological control of encroaching woody plants through reducing seeding of their host woody plants. However, the interplay of grazing and dynamics of herbivorous insects or parasitic plants, and its effects on the potential biological control of woody encroachment in grasslands remains unclear. We investigated the flower and pod damage by herbivorous insects, and the infection rates of a parasitic plant on the shrub Caragana microphylla, which is currently encroaching in Inner Mongolia Steppe, under different grazing management treatments (33-year non-grazed, 7-year non-grazed, currently grazed). Our results showed that Caragana biomass was highest at the currently grazed site, and lowest at the 33-year non-grazed site. Herbaceous plant biomass followed the opposite pattern, suggesting that grazing is indeed facilitating the encroachment of Caragana plants in Inner Mongolia Steppe. Grazing also reduced the abundance of herbivorous insects per Caragana flower, numbers of flowers and pods damaged by insect herbivores, and the infection rates of the parasitic plant on Caragana plants. Our results suggest that grazing may facilitate woody encroachment in grasslands not only through canonical mechanisms (e.g. competitive release via feeding on grasses, reductions in fires, etc.), but also by limiting natural biological controls of woody plants (herbivorous insects and parasitic plants). Thus, management efforts must focus on preventing overgrazing to better protect grassland ecosystems from woody encroachment.

BackgroundVarious types of near work have been suggested to promote the incidence and progression of myopia, while outdoor activity appears to prevent or retard myopia. However, there is a lack of consensus on how to interpret these results and translate them into effective intervention strategies. This study examined the association between visual acuity and time allocated to various activities among school-going children.MethodsPopulation-based survey of 19,934 students in grade 4 and 5 from 252 randomly selected rural primary schools in Northwest China in September 2012. This survey measured visual acuity and collected self-reported data on time spent outdoors and time spent doing various types of near activities.ResultsProlonged (>60 minutes/day) computer usage (-0.025 LogMAR units, P = .011) and smartphone usage (-0.041 LogMAR units, P = .001) were significantly associated with greater refractive error, while television viewing and after-school study were not. For time spent outdoors, only time around midday was significantly associated with better uncorrected visual acuity. Compared to children who reported no midday time outdoors, those who spent time outdoors at midday for 31-60 minutes or more than 60 minutes had better uncorrected visual acuity by 0.016 LogMAR units (P = .014) and 0.016 units (P = .042), respectively.ConclusionsUse of smart phones and computers were associated with declines in children's vision, while television viewing was not. Statistically significant associations between outdoor time at midday and reduced myopia may support the hypothesis that light intensity plays a role in the protective effects of outdoor time.

To evaluate the effects of the interactions between polymorphisms in Nalp3, caspase-1, and interleukin(IL)-1β genes and occupational dust exposure on the risk of silicosis.We conducted a population-based case-control study in a large iron mine in China. Between January 2006 and December 2009, we identified 179 patients with silicosis to evaluate as cases and 201 individuals without silicosis to evaluate as controls. We estimated cumulative dust exposure (CDE) for all subjects and we genotyped polymorphisms in Nalp3, caspase-1, and IL-1β genes. We estimated odds ratios(ORs), 95% confidence intervals(95%CIs), and p-values using logistic regression models adjusted for selected confounders.After adjusting for age, smoking status, and CDE, subjects with the CT genotype of Ex4-849C>T in Nalp3 and the GA genotype of Ex2+37G>A in caspase-1 had increased risks of silicosis (adjusted ORs[95%CIs] = 2.40 [1.12-5.12] and 3.62 [1.63-8.02], respectively). Among subjects younger than 70 years old, those with the CC genotype of IVS8-7652A>C in Nalp3 had a lower risk of silicosis than those with other genotypes (adjusted OR[95%CI] = 0.24[0.06-0.88]). Among subjects aged 70 years and older, those with the CT genotype of Ex4-849C>T in Nalp3 and those with the GA genotype of Ex2+37G>A in caspase-1 had a higher risk of silicosis than those with other genotypes (adjusted ORs [95%CI] = 2.52[1.04-6.12] and 5.19[1.88-14.35], respectively). Among subjects with CDE greater than 120 mg/m3×year and among smokers, those with the GA genotype of Ex2+37G>A in caspase-1 had a higher risk of silicosis than those with other genotypes (adjusted ORs[95%CIs] = 26.37[3.35-207.39] and 3.47[1.40-8.64], respectively).Genetic polymorphisms in Nalp3 and caspase-1 may be associated with individual susceptibility to silicosis, especially when the polymorphisms interact with age, CDE, or smoking status.

In general, community similarity is thought to decay with distance; however, this view may be complicated by the relative roles of different ecological processes at different geographical scales, and by the compositional perspective (e.g. species, functional group and phylogenetic lineage) used. Coastal salt marshes are widely distributed worldwide, but no studies have explicitly examined variation in salt marsh plant community composition across geographical scales, and from species, functional and phylogenetic perspectives. Based on studies in other ecosystems, we hypothesized that, in coastal salt marshes, community turnover would be more rapid at local versus larger geographical scales; and that community turnover patterns would diverge among compositional perspectives, with a greater distance decay at the species level than at the functional or phylogenetic levels. We tested these hypotheses in salt marshes of two regions: The southern Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States. We examined the characteristics of plant community composition at each salt marsh site, how community similarity decayed with distance within individual salt marshes versus among sites in each region, and how community similarity differed among regions, using species, functional and phylogenetic perspectives. We found that results from the three compositional perspectives generally showed similar patterns: there was strong variation in community composition within individual salt marsh sites across elevation; in contrast, community similarity decayed with distance four to five orders of magnitude more slowly across sites within each region. Overall, community dissimilarity of salt marshes was lowest on the southern Atlantic Coast, intermediate on the Gulf Coast, and highest between the two regions. Our results indicated that local gradients are relatively more important than regional processes in structuring coastal salt marsh communities. Our results also suggested that in ecosystems with low species diversity, functional and phylogenetic approaches may not provide additional insight over a species-based approach.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism through which Sphingosine kinase-1 (SPHK1) exerts its anti-apoptosis activity in glioma cancer cells. We here report that dysregulation of SPHK1 alters the sensitivity of glioma to apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Further mechanistic study examined the expression of Bcl-2 family members, including Bcl-2, Mcl-1, Bax and Bim, in SPHK1-overexpressing glioma cells and revealed that only pro-apoptotic Bim was downregulated by SPHK1. Moreover, the transcriptional level of Bim was also altered by SPHK1 in glioma cells. We next confirmed the correlation between SPHK1 and Bim expression in primary glioma specimens. Importantly, increasing SPHK1 expression in glioma cells markedly elevated Akt activity and phosphorylated inactivation of FOXO3a, which led to downregulation of Bim. A pharmacological approach showed that these effects of SPHK1 were dependent on phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Furthermore, effects of SPHK1 on Akt/FOXO3a/Bim pathway could be reversed by SPHK1 specific RNA interference or SPHK1 inhibitor. Collectively, our results indicate that regulation of the Akt/FOXO3a/Bim pathway may be a novel mechanism by which SPHK1 protects glioma cells from apoptosis, thereby involved in glioma tumorigenesis.
