Abstract Rice is one of the major food crops grown globally. However, during the wet season, rice suffers significant yield loss due to reduced light intensity caused by overcast clouds when the light intensity is only around 450–500 µmol/m2/s, compared to 1400–1800 µmol/m2/s in summer. This reduction in light intensity leads to a decrease in seed yield, mainly by limiting tiller or panicle numbers. Yield and its attributing parameters were recorded in one hundred thirty RILs for four consecutive wet seasons in ambient light (AL) and low light (LL, 35% light-cut using white shade net). QTL analysis was performed using Inclusive Composite Interval Mapping (ICIM) with all the phenotypic data and 927 polymorphic SNPs identified by the 7 K Infinium chip. The study identified a large QTL influencing panicle numbers and yield exclusively in lowlight on chromosome 1 (qPNLL1.1, qGYLL1.1) in four consecutive seasons with LOD > 10 and PVE > 30%. The favourable alleles are from the tolerant parent, Swarnaprabha. Another grain yield improving QTL was identified on chromosome 6 (qGYLL6.1), with LOD > 3 in three consecutive seasons. In a diverse rice panel of one hundred seventeen genotypes with five different models, association analysis identified the associated marker for panicle numbers and grain yield in LL, which is also the left marker of the newly identified QTLs for the traits under LL condition. A shade-responsive gene, monoculm 2 (MOC2, LOC_Os01g64660) inside the QTL on chromosome 1, upregulated in the tolerant parent and its QTL-carrying RILs, whereas repressed in the susceptible one. Therefore, due to its significant additive effect and validation across various genotypes, the yield-improving QTL on chromosome 1 can be directly utilised in marker-assisted selection (MAS) for developing shade-tolerant rice. This can also help reduce the yield gap between wet and dry-season rice.

Abstract DNA hydroxymethylation (5hmC), the most abundant oxidative derivative of DNA methylation, is typically enriched at enhancers and gene bodies of transcriptionally active and tissue-specific genes. Although aberrant genomic 5hmC has been implicated in age-related diseases, its functional role in aging remains unknown. Here, using mouse liver and cerebellum as model organs, we show that 5hmC accumulates in gene bodies associated with tissue-specific function and restricts the magnitude of gene expression changes with age. Mechanistically, 5hmC decreases the binding of splicing associated factors and correlates with age-related alternative splicing events. We found that various age-related contexts, such as prolonged quiescence and senescence, drive the accumulation of 5hmC with age. We provide evidence that this age-related transcriptionally restrictive function is conserved in mouse and human tissues. Our findings reveal that 5hmC regulates tissue-specific function and may play a role in longevity.

Abstract Cd(II) is a potentially toxic heavy metal having carcinogenic activity. It is becoming widespread in the soil and groundwater by various natural and anthropological activities. This is inviting its immediate removal. The present study is aimed at developing a Cd(II) resistant strain isolated from contaminated water body and testing its potency in biological remediation of Cd(II) from aqueous environment. The developed resistant strain was characterized by SEM, FESEM, TEM, EDAX, FT-IR, Raman Spectral, XRD and XPS analysis. The results depict considerable morphological changes had taken place on the cell surface and interaction of Cd(II) with the surface exposed functional groups along with intracellular accumulation. Molecular contribution of critical cell wall component has been evaluated. The developed resistant strain had undergone Cd(II) biosorption study by employing adsorption isotherms and kinetic modeling. Langmuir model best fitted the Cd(II) biosorption data compared to the Freundlich one. Cd(II) biosorption by the strain followed a pseudo second order kinetics. The physical parameters affecting biosorption were also optimized by employing response surface methodology using central composite design. The results depict remarkable removal capacity 75.682 ± 0.002% of Cd(II) by the developed resistant strain from contaminated aqueous medium using 500 ppm of Cd(II). Abstract Overexpression of Glycine max disease resistant 1 (GmDR1) exhibits broad-spectrum resistance against Fusarium virguliforme, Heterodera glycines (soybean cyst nematode), Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (spider mites), and Aphis glycines Matsumura (soybean aphids) in soybean. To understand the mechanisms of broad-spectrum immunity mediated by GmDR1, the transcriptomes of a strong and a weak GmDR1-overexpressor following treatment with chitin, a pathogen- and pest-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) common to these organisms, were investigated. The strong and weak GmDR1-overexpressors exhibited altered expression of 6098 and 992 genes, respectively, as compared to the nontransgenic control following chitin treatment. However, only 192 chitin- and 115 buffer-responsive genes exhibited over two-fold changes in expression levels in both strong and weak GmDR1-overexpressors as compared to the control. MapMan analysis of the 192 chitin-responsive genes revealed 64 biotic stress-related genes, of which 53 were induced and 11 repressed as compared to the control. The 53 chitin-induced genes include nine genes that encode receptor kinases, 13 encode nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) receptor proteins, seven encode WRKY transcription factors, four ethylene response factors, and three MYB-like transcription factors. Investigation of a subset of these genes revealed three receptor protein kinases, seven NLR proteins, and one WRKY transcription factor genes that are induced following F. virguliforme and H. glycines infection. The integral plasma membrane GmDR1 protein most likely recognizes PAMPs including chitin and activates transcription of genes encoding receptor kinases, NLR proteins and defense-related genes. GmDR1 could be a pattern recognition receptor that regulates the expression of several NLRs for expression of PAMP-triggered immunity and/or priming the effector triggered immunity.

Abstract In the era of social media, the use of emojis and code-mixed language has become essential in online communication. However, selecting the appropriate emoji that matches a particular sentiment or emotion in the code-mixed text can be difficult. This paper presents a novel task of predicting multiple emojis in English-Hindi code-mixed sentences and proposes a new dataset called SENTIMOJI, which extends the SemEval 2020 Task 9 SentiMix dataset. Our approach is based on exploiting the relationship between emotion, sentiment, and emojis to build an end-to-end framework. We replace the self-attention sublayers in the transformer encoder with simple linear transformations and use the RMS-layer norm instead of the normal layer norm. Moreover, we employ Gated Linear Unit and Fully Connected layers to predict emojis and identify the emotion and sentiment of a tweet. Our experimental results on the SENTIMOJI dataset demonstrate that the proposed multi-task framework outperforms the single-task framework. We also show that emojis are strongly linked to sentiment and emotion and that identifying sentiment and emotion can aid in accurately predicting the most suitable emoji. Our work contributes to the field of natural language processing and can help in the development of more effective tools for sentiment analysis and emotion recognition in code-mixed languages. Abstract Ligand-independent activation of VEGFRs is a hallmark of diabetes and several cancers. Like EGFR, VEGFR2 is activated spontaneously at high receptor concentrations. VEGFR1, on the other hand, remains constitutively inactive in the unligated state, making it an exception among VEGFRs. Ligand stimulation transiently phosphorylates VEGFR1 and induces weak kinase activation in endothelial cells. Recent studies, however, suggest that VEGFR1 signaling is indispensable in regulating various physiological or pathological events. The reason why VEGFR1 is regulated differently from other VEGFRs remains unknown. Here, we elucidate a mechanism of juxtamembrane inhibition that shifts the equilibrium of VEGFR1 towards the inactive state, rendering it an inefficient kinase. The juxtamembrane inhibition of VEGFR1 suppresses its basal phosphorylation even at high receptor concentrations and transiently stabilizes tyrosine phosphorylation after ligand stimulation. We conclude that a subtle imbalance in phosphatase activation or removing juxtamembrane inhibition is sufficient to induce ligand-independent activation of VEGFR1 and sustain tyrosine phosphorylation.

Abstract Carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF-PEEK) composites have gained significant usage across diverse industries like automotive and aerospace due to their desirable characteristics. These properties encompass recyclability, low density, high strength, wear resistance and thermal stability. The components made from CF-PEEK composites for space applications will be subjected to a high radiation environment due to the incoming cosmic rays, comprising protons, α particles, electrons, γ rays, etc., once they escape the Earth’s atmosphere. The ion irradiation of CF-PEEK is accompanied by radiation-induced effects, which drastically change the structure and properties of irradiated material. Since the resistance of CF-PEEK to radiation damage has not been studied extensively, this study aims to understand the effect of high-energy He2+ ions on the microstructure and properties of CF-PEEK composites manufactured using automated fibre placement (AFP) under different processing conditions. The samples have been radiated with 5 MeV He2+ ions using an energy degrader wheel to create a layer with relatively uniform damage. Then, were characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy and their hardness was evaluated using nanoindentation. It was observed that, irradiation increases the hardness of the fibres in all cases. Also, fibre orientation affects the hardness in a statistically significant manner in both unirradiated and irradiated conditions.

Abstract A balanced ecosystem with coexisting constituent species is often perturbed by different natural events that persist only for a finite duration of time. What becomes important is whether, in the aftermath, the ecosystem recovers its balance or not. Here we study the fate of an ecosystem by monitoring the dynamics of a particular species that encounters a sudden increase in death rate. For exploration of the fate of the species, we use Monte-Carlo simulation on a three-species cyclic rock-paper-scissor model. The density of the affected (by perturbation) species is found to drop exponentially immediately after the pulse is applied. In spite of showing this exponential decay as a short-time behavior, there exists a region in parameter space where this species surprisingly remains as a single survivor, wiping out the other two which had not been directly affected by the perturbation. Numerical simulations using stochastic differential equations of the species give consistency to our results.

Abstract The Trustworthy Healthcare Cloud Storage Auditing Scheme (TCSHAS) represents a progressive solution for resolving trust-related issues linked to third-party auditors (TPAs) within traditional healthcare cloud storage audit systems. As the healthcare industry increasingly relies on cloud storage, concerns surrounding security and privacy have grown, motivating the development of a unique incentive mechanism. This mechanism leverages the non-tamperable and traceable features of blockchain technology to encourage TPAs to uphold honesty and reliability. By organizing TPAs as a group of nodes on the blockchain, a system of mutual surveillance is established, enabling diligent monitoring and penalization of any malicious actions. TCSHAS encompasses a comprehensive system model that incorporates smart contracts to manage transaction-related matters, including dispute resolution. Performance evaluations have confirmed its efficiency and suitability for real-world healthcare applications. Our experiments demonstrate that TCSHAS performs well in terms of gas consumption and exhibits scalability as the number of participant’s increases. Compared with other common smart contracts, TCSHAS maintains a balanced level of complexity, incorporates strong security measures, offers comprehensive auditing capabilities, and remains flexible. To further enhance our research, we can explore ways to optimize TCSHAS scalability and performance, such as through shading, as the volume of healthcare data continues to grow. In addition, we can investigate the integration of advanced privacy technologies or AI-based auditing. These advancements will reinforce the role of TCSHAS in establishing trust and security in healthcare cloud storage audits, making it highly relevant in real-world healthcare settings. Ultimately, TCSHAS contributes to improving trust and security in healthcare cloud storage auditing, ensuring responsible management of sensitive healthcare data.

Abstract Healthcare delivery during the initial days of outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic was badly impacted due to large number of severely infected patients posing an unprecedented global challenge. Although the importance of Chest X-rays (CXRs) in meeting this challenge has now been widely recognized, speedy diagnosis of CXRs remains an outstanding challenge because of fewer Radiologists. The exponential increase in Smart Phone ownership globally, including LMICs, provides an opportunity for exploring AI-driven diagnostic tools when provided with large volumes of CXRs transmitted through Smart Phones. However, the challenges associated with such systems have not been studied to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we show that the predictions of AI-driven models on CXR images transmitted through Smart Phones via applications, such as WhatsApp, suffer both in terms of Predictability and Explainability, two key aspects of any automated Medical Diagnosis system. We find that several existing Deep learning based models exhibit prediction instability–disagreement between the prediction outcome of the original image and the transmitted image. Concomitantly we find that the explainability of the models deteriorate substantially, prediction on the transmitted CXR is often driven by features present outside the lung region, clearly a manifestation of Spurious Correlations. Our study reveals that there is significant compression of high-resolution CXR images, sometimes as high as 95%, and this could be the reason behind these two problems. Apart from demonstrating these problems, our main contribution is to show that Multi-Task learning (MTL) can serve as an effective bulwark against the aforementioned problems. We show that MTL models exhibit substantially more robustness, 40% over existing baselines. Explainability of such models, when measured by a saliency score dependent on out-of-lung features, also show a 35% improvement. The study is conducted on WaCXR dataset, a curated dataset of 6562 image pairs corresponding to original uncompressed and WhatsApp compressed CXR images. Keeping in mind that there are no previous datasets to study such problems, we open-source this data along with all implementations.

Abstract The use of neurofeedback is an important aspect of effective motor rehabilitation as it offers real-time sensory information to promote neuroplasticity. However, there is still limited knowledge about how the brain’s functional networks reorganize in response to such feedback. To address this gap, this study investigates the reorganization of the brain network during motor imagery tasks when subject to visual stimulation or visual-electrotactile stimulation feedback. This study can provide healthcare professionals with a deeper understanding of the changes in the brain network and help develop successful treatment approaches for brain–computer interface-based motor rehabilitation applications. We examine individual edges, nodes, and the entire network, and use the minimum spanning tree algorithm to construct a brain network representation using a functional connectivity matrix. Furthermore, graph analysis is used to detect significant features in the brain network that might arise in response to the feedback. Additionally, we investigate the power distribution of brain activation patterns using power spectral analysis and evaluate the motor imagery performance based on the classification accuracy. The results showed that the visual and visual-electrotactile stimulation feedback induced subject-specific changes in brain activation patterns and network reorganization in the $$\alpha$$ α band. Thus, the visual-electrotactile stimulation feedback significantly improved the integration of information flow between brain regions associated with motor-related commands and higher-level cognitive functions, while reducing cognitive workload in the sensory areas of the brain and promoting positive emotions. Despite these promising results, neither neurofeedback modality resulted in a significant improvement in classification accuracy, compared with the absence of feedback. These findings indicate that multimodal neurofeedback can modulate imagery-mediated rehabilitation by enhancing motor-cognitive communication and reducing cognitive effort. In future interventions, incorporating this technique to ease cognitive demands for participants could be crucial for maintaining their motivation to engage in rehabilitation.

Abstract Disposal of significant tonnages of rice straw is expensive, but using it to mobilise phosphorus (P) from inorganically fixed pools in the soil may add value. This study was carried out to determine whether the use of rice straw mixed with phosphorus-solubilizing microbes could solubilize a sizable portion fixed soil P and affect P transformation, silicon (Si) concentration, organic acid concentrations, and enzyme activity to increase plant growth. Depending on the soil temperature, the application of rice straw at 12 Mg ha−1 with phosphorus-solubilizing microbes could solubilize 3.4–3.6% of inorganic P, and minimised the hysteresis impact by 6–8%. At plant maturity, application of rice straw at 12 Mg ha−1 with phosphorus-solubilizing microbes and 75% of recommended P application raised the activity of dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase activity, cellulase, and peroxidase by 77, 65, 87, and 82% in soil, respectively. It also boosted Si concentration in the soil by 58%. Wheat grain yield was 40% and 18% higher under rice straw at 12 Mg ha−1 with phosphorus-solubilizing microbes with 75% of recommended P application than under no and 100% P application, respectively. Rice grain yield also increased significantly with the same treatment. Additionally, it increased root volume, length, and P uptake by 2.38, 1.74 and 1.62-times above control for wheat and 1.98, 1.67, and 2.06-times above control for rice, respectively. According to path analysis, P solubilisation by Si and organic acids considerably increased (18–32%) P availability in the rhizosphere. Therefore, cultivators could be advised to use rice straw at 12 Mg ha−1 with phosphorus-solubilizing microbes with 75% P of mineral P fertiliser to save 25% P fertiliser without reducing wheat and rice yield.

Abstract Culture techniques have associated colonization with pathogenic bacteria in the airways of neonates with later risk of childhood asthma, whereas more recent studies utilizing sequencing techniques have shown the same phenomenon with specific anaerobic taxa. Here, we analyze nasopharyngeal swabs from 1 month neonates in the COPSAC2000 prospective birth cohort by 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the V3-V4 region in relation to asthma risk throughout childhood. Results are compared with previous culture results from hypopharyngeal aspirates from the same cohort and with hypopharyngeal sequencing data from the later COPSAC2010 cohort. Nasopharyngeal relative abundance values of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis are associated with the same species in the hypopharyngeal cultures. A combined pathogen score of these bacteria’s abundance values is associated with persistent wheeze/asthma by age 7. No other taxa are associated. Compared to the hypopharyngeal aspirates from the COPSAC2010 cohort, the anaerobes Veillonella and Prevotella, which have previously been implicated in asthma development, are less commonly detected in the COPSAC2000 nasopharyngeal samples, but correlate with the pathogen score, hinting at latent community structures that bridge current and previous results. These findings have implications for future asthma prevention efforts.

Abstract The recent prediction of diabetes to be a global pandemic invites a detection strategy preferably non-invasive, and bloodless to manage the disease and the associated complications. Here, we have synthesized chitosan polymer functionalized, organic–inorganic bio-compatible nano-hybrids of Mn3O4 nanoparticles, and characterized it by utilizing several optical methodologies for the structural characterization which shows the Michaelis Menten (MM) kinetics for glucose and alpha-amylase protein (well-known diabetes biomarkers). We have also studied the potentiality for the detection of alpha-amylase in human salivary secretion which is reported to be strongly correlated with uncontrolled hyperglycemia. Finally, we have developed a prototype for the measurement of glucose (LOD of 0.38 mg/dL, LOQ of 1.15 mg/dL) and HbA1c (LOD of 0.15% and LOQ of 0.45%) utilizing the basic knowledge in the study for the detection of uncontrolled hyperglycemia at the point-of-care. With the limited number of clinical trials, we have explored the potential of our work in combating the diabetic pandemic across the globe in near future.

Abstract DNA interactions with multivalent ligand(s) have increasingly become the subject of substantial research. For several small molecules with therapeutic potential, nucleic acids serve as their primary molecular target. Such interaction has been shown to affect transcription or replication, ultimately leading to apoptotic cell death. As a result, researchers are becoming increasingly interested in understanding how small molecules interact with DNA making it possible to develop new, DNA-specific drugs. The bioactive indole alkaloid, Yohimbe (Yohimbine; Yh) has been broadly studied in pharmacological properties while its binding mode to DNA has not been explicated so far. This study adopted molecular modelling and multi-spectroscopic methods to investigate the interaction between Yohimbine and herring testes (HT DNA) in physiological conditions. Minor hypochromic and bathochromic shifts of fluorescence intensity were observed, suggesting the binding of Yh to HT DNA. The Scatchard plot analyses using the McGhee-von Hipple method revealed non-cooperative binding and affinities in the range of 105 M−1. The thermodynamic parameters suggested exothermic binding, which was favoured by negative enthalpy and positive entropy changes from temperature-dependent fluorescence experiments. Salt-dependent fluorescence suggested that the interaction between the ligand and DNA was governed by non-polyelectrolytic forces. The results of iodide quenching, urea denaturation assay, dye displacement, and in silico molecular docking, suggested groove binding of Yh to HT DNA. Thus, the groove binding mechanism of interaction was validated by both biophysical and computational techniques. The structural elucidation and energetic profiling of Yh's interaction with naturally occurring polymeric DNA can be useful to the development of DNA-targeted therapeutics.

Abstract The valence electronic structure of magnetic centers is one of the factors that determines the characteristics of a magnet. This may refer to orbital degeneracy, as for j eff = 1/2 Kitaev magnets, or near-degeneracy, e.g., involving the third and fourth shells in cuprate superconductors. Here we explore the inner structure of magnetic moments in group-5 lacunar spinels, fascinating materials featuring multisite magnetic units in the form of tetrahedral tetramers. Our quantum chemical analysis reveals a very colorful landscape, much richer than the single-electron, single-configuration description applied so far to all group-5 GaM 4 X 8 chalcogenides, and clarifies the basic multiorbital correlations on M 4 tetrahedral clusters: while for V strong correlations yield a wave-function that can be well described in terms of four V4+V3+V3+V3+ resonant valence structures, for Nb and Ta a picture of dressed molecular-orbital j eff = 3/2 entities is more appropriate. These internal degrees of freedom likely shape vibronic couplings, phase transitions, and the magneto-electric properties in each of these systems.

Abstract Severe Thunderstorms are the extreme weather convective features. It causes local calamities in various ways. Proper prediction with lead time is an important factor to prevent such calamities from saving people. Here, both probabilistic and machine learning techniques are applied to weather data to obtain proper predictions. Traditional methodologies are already available for such prediction purposes. However, Naïve Bayes and RBFN (Radial Basis Function Network) methodology have been introduced here with some specific weather parameters that has not done before remarkably. A comparative study was performed on weather data including Naïve Bayes, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN). All these data have been procured from Kolkata located in north-east India. The result obtained by applying the Radial Basis Function Network is better among the three methods, yielding a correct prediction of 95% for severe “squall-storms” and 94% for “no storm”. The predictions have a sufficient lead time of 10- 12 h.

Abstract Cadmium is one of the most dreadful heavy metals and is becoming a major toxicant in ground water with increasing concentration above the WHO Guidelines in drinking water (0.003 mg/L). The potential sources of cadmium include sewage sludge, phosphate fertilizers and ingredients like Ni–Cd batteries, pigments, plating and plastics. Cadmium levels are increased in water owing to the use and disposal of cadmium containing ingredients. Water draining from a landfill may contain higher cadmium levels. The authors have tried to evaluate the optimized nutritional conditions for the optimal growth and Cd(II) remediation capacity for a developed Cd(II) resistant yeast strain named Candida tropicalis XTA 1874 isolated from contaminated water-body in West Bengal. By analyzing the optimization conditions, a synthetic medium was developed and the composition has been given in the main text. The strain showed much better Cd(II) adsorption capacity under the optimized nutritional conditions (Mean removal = 88.077 ± 0.097%).

Abstract Four yeast strains were isolated from the gut of stingless bee, collected in Churdhar, Himachal Pradesh, India. Physiological characterization, morphological examination, and sequence analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) genes, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, and D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene revealed that the four strains isolated from the gut of stingless bee belonged to the Debaryomyces clade. Strain CIG-23HT showed sequence divergence of 7.5% from Debaryomyces nepalensis JCM 2095T, 7.8% from Debaryomyces udenii JCM 7855T, and Debaryomyces coudertii JCM 2387T in the D1/D2 domain. In the ITS region sequences, strain CIG-23HT showed a 15% sequence divergence from Debaryomyces nepalensis JCM 2095T and Debaryomyces coudertii JCM 2387T. In 18S rRNA gene sequence, the strain CIG-23HT showed 1.14% sequence divergence from Debaryomyces nepalensis JCM 2095 and and Debaryomyces coudertii JCM 2387, and 0.83% sequence divergence from Debaryomyces hansenii NRRL Y-7426. Strain CIG-23HT can utilize more carbon sources than closely related species. The findings suggest that strain CIG-23HT is a novel species of the genus Debaryomyces, and we propose to name it as Debaryomyces apis f.a., sp. nov. The holotype is CBS 16297T, and the isotypes are MTCC 12914T and KCTC 37024T. The MycoBank number of Debaryomyces apis f.a., sp. nov. is MB836065. Additionally, a method using cresol red and Bromothymol blue pH indicator dyes was developed to screen for lipase producers, which is more sensitive and efficient than the currently used phenol red and rhodamine B dye-based screening methods, and avoids the problem of less differentiable zone of hydrolysis.

Abstract The study was aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed spectroscopy-based non-invasive and noncontact device (SAMIRA) for the simultaneous measurement of hemoglobin, bilirubin and oxygen saturation as an alternative to the invasive biochemical method of blood sampling. The accuracy of the device was assessed in 4318 neonates having incidences of either anemia, jaundice, or hypoxia. Transcutaneous bilirubin, hemoglobin and blood saturation values were obtained by the newly developed instrument which was corroborated with the biochemical blood tests by expert clinicians. The instrument is trained using Artificial Neural Network Analysis to increase the acceptability of the data. The artificial intelligence incorporated within the instrument determines the disease condition of the neonate. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r was found to be 0.987 for hemoglobin estimation and 0.988 for bilirubin and blood gas saturation respectively. The bias and the limits of agreement for the measurement of all the three parameters were within the clinically acceptance limit.

Natural fibres have been used as fibre reinforcements in composites as they offer eco-friendly and economic advantages, but their susceptibility to deterioration when exposed to heat and flames has limited their practical application in fibre-reinforced polymeric composites. Fire-reaction properties have been explored in reasonable detail for plant fibres, but a gap exists in the understanding of animal fibre-reinforced composites. Understanding the thermal and fire reactions of these keratin-rich animal fibres is crucial for material selection and advancing composite product development. The current paper critically discusses the existing research landscape and suggests future research directions. The use of keratinous fibres in composites can definitely improve their thermal stability and fire performance, but it also appears to adversely affect the composite’s mechanical performance. The main part of this paper focuses on the flame-retardant treatment of keratinous fibres and polymer composites, and their behaviour under fire conditions. The final part of this paper includes a brief look at the environmental impact of the treatment methods; the overall processing of keratinous fibre-reinforced composites is also presented to gain further insight.

Abstract Uncontrolled human and industrial activities lead to the increase in demand for selective gas sensors for detection of poisonous gases in our environment. Conventional resistive gas sensors suffer from predetermined sensitivity and poor selectivity among gases. This paper demonstrates curcumin reduced graphene oxide-silk field effect transistor for selective and sensitive detection of ammonia in air. The sensing layer was characterized by X-ray diffraction, FESEM and HRTEM to confirm its structural and morphological features. Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was carried out to analyze the functional moieties present in the sensing layer. Curcumin reduced graphene oxide introduces sufficient hydroxyl groups in the sensing layer to provide high degree of selectivity towards ammonia vapors. The performance of the sensor device was evaluated at positive, negative and zero gate voltage. Carrier modulation in the channel through gate electrostatics revealed that the minority carriers (electrons) in p-type reduced graphene oxide plays a pivotal role in enhancement of sensitivity of the sensor device. The sensor response was enhanced to 634% for 50 ppm ammonia at 0.6 V gate voltage compared to 23.2% and 39.3% at 0 V and − 3 V respectively. The sensor exhibited faster response and recovery at 0.6 V owing to higher mobility of electrons and quick charge transfer mechanism. The sensor exhibited satisfactory humidity resistant characteristics and high stability. Hence, curcumin reduced graphene oxide-silk field effect transistor device with proper gate bias elucidates excellent ammonia detection and may be a potential candidate for future room temperature, low power, portable gas detection system.

Abstract This research proposes a data-driven approach to identify possible disparities in a utility’s outage management practices. The approach has been illustrated for an Investor-Owned Utility located in the Midwest region in the U.S. Power outage data for approximately 5 years between March 2017 and January 2022 was collected for 36 ZIP/postal codes located within the utility’s service territory. The collected data was used to calculate the total number of outages, customers affected, and the duration of outages during those 5 years for each ZIP code. Next, each variable was normalized with respect to the population density of the ZIP code. After normalizing, a K-means clustering algorithm was implemented that created five clusters out of those 36 ZIP codes. The difference in the outage parameters was found to be statistically significant. This indicated differential experience with power outages in different ZIP codes. Next, three Generalized Linear Models were developed to test if the presence of critical facilities such as hospitals, 911 centers, and fire stations, as socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the ZIP codes, can explain their differential experience with the power outage. It was found that the annual duration of outages is lower in the ZIP codes where critical facilities are located. On the other hand, ZIP codes with lower median household income have experienced more power outages, i.e., higher outage counts in those 5 years. Lastly, the ZIP codes with a higher percentage of the White population have experienced more severe outages that have affected more customers.

Abstract The Rashba spin–orbit coupling induced quantum transport through a quantum dot embedded in a two-arm quantum loop of a quantum dot transistor is studied at finite temperature in the presence of electron–phonon and Hubbard interactions, an external magnetic field and quantum dissipation. The Anderson-Holstein-Caldeira-Leggett-Rashba model is used to describe the system and several unitary transformations are employed to decouple some of the interactions and the transport properties are calculated using the Keldysh technique. It is shown that the Rashba coupling alone separates the spin-up and spin-down currents causing zero-field spin-polarization. The gap between the up and down-spin currents and conductances can be changed by tuning the Rashba strength. In the absence of a field, the spin-up and spin-down currents show an opposite behaviour with respect to spin–orbit interaction phase. The spin-polarization increases with increasing electron–phonon interaction at zero magnetic field. In the presence of a magnetic field, the tunneling conductance and spin-polarization change differently with the polaronic interaction, spin–orbit interaction and dissipation in different temperature regimes. This study predicts that for a given Rashba strength and magnetic field, the maximum spin-polarization in a quantum dot based device occurs at zero temperature.

Article Highlights The oscillations of a submarine pipeline subjected to current loads that is varying along the depth are measured in the field (prototype), which is unique and valuable data that is sparsely or seldom available. Using numerical analysis this problem is analysed to replicate the field oscillations due to variable current to enhance the confidence of mathematical models. The high oscillations in the direction of the current can induce damage within the design life of the pipeline and therefore adopt measures to bring down the oscillations to acceptable level by providing external attachments on the pipeline.

Abstract We have studied the fragmentation of the brominated cyclic hydrocarbons bromocyclo-propane, bromocyclo-butane, and bromocyclo-pentane upon Br(3d) and C(1s) inner-shell ionization using coincidence ion momentum imaging. We observe a substantial yield of CH3 + fragments, whose formation requires intramolecular hydrogen (or proton) migration, that increases with molecular size, which contrasts with prior observations of hydrogen migration in linear hydrocarbon molecules. Furthermore, by inspecting the fragment ion momentum correlations of three-body fragmentation channels, we conclude that CH x + fragments (with x = 0, …, 3) with an increasing number of hydrogens are more likely to be produced via sequential fragmentation pathways. Overall trends in the molecular-size-dependence of the experimentally observed kinetic energy releases and fragment kinetic energies are explained with the help of classical Coulomb explosion simulations.

We study a neutral honeycomb array of acceptors in a Group IV semiconductor. Tight-binding exhibits a band gap from different hopping of angular momentum $\pm\frac32$ and $\pm\frac12$ , forming a topological insulator (TI). The hopping is even under separate reversal of spatial and spin motions, unlike spin–orbit coupling. The TI is robust to Coulomb interactions and realistic electronic structure calculations show it survives for a range of spacings and distortions commensurate with the silicon growth surface, but has an instability towards spin density wave formation at large separations.

Abstract World Wide Web and scientific literature record information regarding several organelles and mitochondria is not an exception. However, currently mitochondrial databases also provide information about non-mitochondrial proteins. As on date, there is no way to know the exclusive mitochondrial proteins. It is crucial to know the exclusively mitochondrial proteins, present in mitochondria but absent elsewhere. In this work, by analysis of available databases, we have provided a list of exclusively mitochondrial proteins known as on date.

Carpenter waste has been used as a raw material for synthesizing microcrystalline cellulose through various chemical pre-treatment process sequences. Carpenter waste treated with 10% (w/v) sodium hydroxide followed by various concentration of sodium chlorite (0.5%, 0.7%, and 1.0%) treatment has resulted in substantial loss in weight. The synthesized microcrystalline cellulose has been characterized by different instrumental analysis. FT-IR data showed the successful removal of hemicellulose and lignin from the carpenter waste after various chemical treatments. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis is done to measure the crystallinity index and crystal size of the synthesized microcrystalline cellulose. The microcrystalline cellulose produced under different concentrations of sodium chlorite exhibits crystallinity index in the range of 67.56 to 68.85 and calculated average crystal size within the range of 6.47–6.60 nm. The calculated average particle size of microcrystalline cellulose ranges from 96.42 to 437.83 nm depending on the treatment conditions. Higher concentration of sodium chlorite treatment has led to lowering the particle size. Scanning Electron Microscopic image of microcrystalline cellulose shows curled and soft-flat shaped with rough pits and fibrillated network structure. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic analysis reveals the cylindrical rod-shaped morphology and porous structure of the synthesized microcrystalline cellulose from carpenter waste.

BackgroundThe increased use of telemedicine to provide virtual outpatient visits during the pandemic has led to concerns about potential increased emergency department (ED) admissions and outpatient service use prior to such admissions. We examined the frequency of virtual visits use prior to ED admissions and characterized the patients with prior virtual visit use and the physicians who provided these outpatient visits.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective, population-based, cross-sectional analysis using linked health administrative data in Ontario, Canada to identify patients who had an ED admission between July 1 and September 30, 2021 and patients with an ED admissions during the same period in 2019. We grouped patients based on their use of outpatient services in the 7 days prior to admission and reported their sociodemographic characteristics and healthcare utilization.ResultsThere were 1,080,334 ED admissions in 2021 vs. 1,113,230 in 2019. In 2021, 74% of these admissions had no prior outpatient visits (virtual or in-person) within 7 days of admission, compared to 75% in 2019. Only 3% of ED admissions had both virtual and in-person visits in the 7 days prior to ED admission. Patients with prior virtual care use were more likely to be hospitalized than those without any outpatient care (13% vs 7.7.%).InterpretationThe net amount of ED admissions and outpatient care prior to admission remained the same over a period of the COVID-19 pandemic when cases were relatively stable. Virtual care seemed to be able to appropriately triage patients to the ED and virtual visits replaced in-person visits ahead of ED admissions, as opposed to being additive.

Stock market prediction is the process of determining the value of a company's shares and other financial assets in the future. This paper proposes a new model where Altruistic Dragonfly Algorithm (ADA) is combined with Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) for stock market prediction. ADA is a meta-heuristic algorithm which optimizes the parameters of LS-SVM to avoid local minima and overfitting, resulting in better prediction performance. Experiments have been performed on 12 datasets and the obtained results are compared with other popular meta-heuristic algorithms. The results show that the proposed model provides a better predictive ability and demonstrate the effectiveness of ADA in optimizing the parameters of LS-SVM.

Effective dialogue generation for task completion is challenging to build. The task requires the response generation system to generate the responses consistent with intent and slot values, have diversity in response and be able to handle multiple domains. The response also needs to be context relevant with respect to the previous utterances in the conversation. In this paper, we build six different models containing Bi-directional Long Short Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) based encoders. To effectively generate the correct slot values, we implement a copy mechanism at the decoder side. To capture the conversation context and the current state of the conversation we introduce a simple heuristic to build a conversational knowledge graph. Using this novel algorithm we are able to capture important aspects in a conversation. This conversational knowledge-graph is then used by our response generation model to generate more relevant and consistent responses. Using this knowledge-graph we do not need the entire utterance history, rather only the last utterance to capture the conversational context. We conduct experiments showing the effectiveness of the knowledge-graph in capturing the context and generating good response. We compare these results against hierarchical-encoder-decoder models and show that the use of triples from the conversational knowledge-graph is an effective method to capture context and the user requirement. Using this knowledge-graph we show an average performance gain of 0.75 BLEU score across different models. Similar results also hold true across different manual evaluation metrics.

Cochlear sound encoding depends on α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid receptors (AMPARs), but reliance on specific pore-forming subunits is unknown. With 5-week-old male C57BL/6J Gria3-knockout mice (i.e., subunit GluA3KO) we determined cochlear function, synapse ultrastructure, and AMPAR molecular anatomy at ribbon synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and spiral ganglion neurons. GluA3KO and wild-type (GluA3WT) mice reared in ambient sound pressure level (SPL) of 55–75 dB had similar auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds, wave-1 amplitudes, and latencies. Postsynaptic densities (PSDs), presynaptic ribbons, and synaptic vesicle sizes were all larger on the modiolar side of the IHCs from GluA3WT, but not GluA3KO, demonstrating GluA3 is required for modiolar–pillar synapse differentiation. Presynaptic ribbons juxtaposed with postsynaptic GluA2/4 subunits were similar in quantity, however, lone ribbons were more frequent in GluA3KO and GluA2-lacking synapses were observed only in GluA3KO. GluA2 and GluA4 immunofluorescence volumes were smaller on the pillar side than the modiolar side in GluA3KO, despite increased pillar-side PSD size. Overall, the fluorescent puncta volumes of GluA2 and GluA4 were smaller in GluA3KO than GluA3WT. However, GluA3KO contained less GluA2 and greater GluA4 immunofluorescence intensity relative to GluA3WT (threefold greater mean GluA4:GluA2 ratio). Thus, GluA3 is essential in development, as germline disruption of Gria3 caused anatomical synapse pathology before cochlear output became symptomatic by ABR. We propose the hearing loss in older male GluA3KO mice results from progressive synaptopathy evident in 5-week-old mice as decreased abundance of GluA2 subunits and an increase in GluA2-lacking, GluA4-monomeric Ca2+-permeable AMPARs.

The Development of bioresponsive extrudable hydrogels for 3D bioprinting is imperative to address the growing demand for scaffold design as well as efficient and reliable methods of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This study proposed genipin (5 mg) cross-linked gelatin (1 to 1.5 g)-hyaluronic acid (0.3 g) hydrogel bioink (20 mL) tailored for 3D bioprinting. The focus is on high cell loading and a less artificial extra-cellular matrix (ECM) effect, as well as exploring their potential applications in tissue engineering. The bioresponsiveness of these hydrogel scaffolds was successfully evaluated at 37 °C and room temperature (at pH 2.5, 7.4, and 9). The rheological and mechanical properties (more than three times) increased with the increase in gelatin content in the hydrogel; however, the hydrogel with the least amount of gelatin showed the best extrusion capability. This optimized hydrogel’s high extrusion ability and post-printing shape fidelity were evident from 3D and four-axis printing of complex structures such as hollow tubes, stars, pyramids, and zigzag porous tubular (four-axis) scaffolds (printed at 90 kPa pressure, 70 mm/s speed, 22G needle, fourth axis rotation of 4 rpm). 3 million/mL MC3T3-E1 mouse osteoblast cells were used in preparing 3D bioprinted samples. The in vitro cell culture studies have been carried out in a CO2 incubator (at 37 °C, 5% CO2). In the cytocompatibility study, almost three times more cell viability was observed in 3 days compared to day 1 control, proving the non-toxicity and cell-supportiveness of these hydrogels. High cell viability and cell-to-cell interactions observed at the end of day 3 using this moderately stable hydrogel in 3D bioprinting exhibit high potential for precise cell delivery modes in tissue engineering as well as regenerative medicine.

This paper discusses two major issues: (i) understanding the influence of the solvent used for fibre processing to obtain flame-retardant chicken feathers, and (ii) establishing the importance of the fibre–matrix blending temperature before composite manufacturing. Three temperature profiles for the extrusion die have been taken into consideration: a low-temperature profile (40 °C) (LT-FRCF), a medium-temperature profile (120 °C) (MT-FRCF), and a high-temperature profile (200 °C) (HT-FRCF). Due to better mixing, the tensile strengths for the medium- and high-temperature profile specimens improved by approximately 44% and 83%, respectively. The cone calorimeter results for the samples with water as the solvent for the feather modification showed a 22% reduction in the peak heat release rate compared to those of the samples with ethanol as the fibre treatment solvent, inferring the importance of the solvent used for the processing and making the process more sustainable with a lower water footprint. The research findings provide clear evidence of how the mixing (extrusion) temperature and choice of solvent for modifying chicken feather fibres affect the composites’ mechanical and flame-retardant properties. These insights contribute to our understanding of how keratinous fibres can effectively serve as flame-retardant reinforcements in polymeric composites.

Insecticide-treated net (ITN) is the most applicable and cost-effective malaria intervention measure in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere. Although ITNs have been widely distributed to malaria-endemic regions in the past, their success has been threatened by misuses (in fishing, agriculture etc.) and decay in ITN efficacy. Decision-making in using the ITNs depends on multiple coevolving factors: malaria prevalence, mosquito density, ITN availability and its efficacy, and other socio-economic determinants. While ITN misuse increases as the efficacy of ITNs declines, high efficacy also impedes proper use due to free-riding. This irrational usage leads to increased malaria prevalence, thereby worsening malaria control efforts. It also remains unclear if the optimum ITN use for malaria elimination can be achieved under such an adaptive social learning process. Here, we incorporate evolutionary game theory into a disease transmission model to demonstrate these behavioural interactions and their impact on malaria prevalence. We show that social optimum usage is a function of transmission potential, ITN efficacy and mosquito demography. Under specific parameter regimes, our model exhibits patterns of ITN usage similar to observed data from parts of Africa. Our study suggests that the provision of financial incentives as prompt feedback to improper ITN use can reduce misuse and contribute positively towards malaria elimination efforts in Africa and elsewhere.

The holonomic approach to controlling (nitrogen-vacancy) NV-center qubits provides an elegant way of theoretically devising universal quantum gates that operate on qubits via calculable microwave pulses. There is, however, a lack of simulated results from the theory of holonomic control of quantum registers with more than two qubits describing the transition between the dark states. Considering this, we have been experimenting with the IBM Quantum Experience technology to determine the capabilities of simulating holonomic control of NV-centers for three qubits describing an eight-level system that produces a non-Abelian geometric phase. The tunability of the geometric phase via the detuning frequency is demonstrated through the high fidelity (~85%) of three-qubit off-resonant holonomic gates over the on-resonant ones. The transition between the dark states shows the alignment of the gate’s dark state with the qubit’s initial state hence decoherence of the multi-qubit system is well-controlled through a π/3 rotation.

Live-cell imaging has become state of the art to accurately identify the nature of mitotic and cell cycle defects. Low- and high-throughput microscopy setups have yield huge data amounts of cells recorded in different experimental and pathological conditions. Tailored semi-automated and automated image analysis approaches allow the analysis of high-content screening data sets, saving time and avoiding bias. However, they were mostly designed for very specific experimental setups, which restricts their flexibility and usability. The general need for dedicated experiment-specific user-annotated training sets and experiment-specific user-defined segmentation parameters remains a major bottleneck for fully automating the analysis process. In this work we present LiveCellMiner, a highly flexible open-source software tool to automatically extract, analyze and visualize both aggregated and time-resolved image features with potential biological relevance. The software tool allows analysis across high-content data sets obtained in different platforms, in a quantitative and unbiased manner. As proof of principle application, we analyze here the dynamic chromatin and tubulin cytoskeleton features in human cells passing through mitosis highlighting the versatile and flexible potential of this tool set.

Treatment options for men with moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have variable efficacy, safety, and retreatment profiles, contributing to variations in patient quality of life and healthcare costs. This study examined the long-term cost-effectiveness of generic combination therapy (CT), prostatic urethral lift (PUL), water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT), photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for the treatment of BPH. A systematic literature review was performed to identify clinical trials of CT, PUL, WVTT, PVP, and TURP that reported change in International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) for men with BPH and a prostate volume ≤80 cm3. A random-effects network meta-analysis was used to account for the differences in patient baseline clinical characteristics between trials. An Excel-based Markov model was developed with a cohort of males with a mean age of 63 and an average IPSS of 22 to assess the cost-effectiveness of these treatment options at 1 and 5 years from a US Medicare perspective. Procedural and adverse event (AE)-related costs were based on 2021 Medicare reimbursement rates. Total Medicare costs at 5 years were highest for PUL ($9,580), followed by generic CT ($8,223), TURP ($6,328), PVP ($6,152), and WVTT ($2,655). The total cost of PUL was driven by procedural ($7,258) and retreatment ($1,168) costs. At 5 years, CT and PUL were associated with fewer quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) than WVTT, PVP, and TURP. Compared to WVTT, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for both TURP and PVP were above a willingness-to-pay threshold of $50,000/QALY (TURP: $64,409/QALY; PVP: $87,483/QALY). This study provides long-term cost-effectiveness evidence for several common treatment options for men with BPH. WVTT is an effective and economically viable treatment in resource-constrained environments.

PurposeIt is currently unclear how the shift towards virtual care during the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may have impacted chronic disease management at a population level. The goals of our study were to provide a description of the levels of use of virtual care services relative to in-person care in patients with chronic disease across Ontario, Canada and to describe levels of healthcare utilization in low versus high virtual care users.MethodsWe used linked health administrative data to conduct a population-based, repeated cross-sectional study of all ambulatory patient visits in Ontario, Canada (January 1, 2018 to January 16, 2021). Further stratifications were also completed to examine patients with COPD, heart failure, asthma, hypertension, diabetes, mental illness, and angina. Patients were classified as low (max 1 virtual care visit) vs. high virtual care users. A time-series analysis was done using interventional autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) modelling on weekly hospitalizations, outpatient visits, and diagnostic tests.ResultsThe use of virtual care increased across all chronic disease patient populations. Virtual care constituted at least half of the total care in all conditions. Both low and high virtual care user groups experienced a statistically significant reduction in hospitalizations and laboratory testing at the start of the pandemic. Hospitalization volumes increased again only among the high users, while testing increased in both groups. Outpatient visits among high users remained unaffected by the pandemic but dropped in low users.ConclusionThe decrease of in-person care during the pandemic was accompanied by an increase in virtual care, which ultimately allowed patients with chronic disease to return to the same visit rate as they had before the onset of the pandemic. Virtual care was adopted across various chronic conditions, but the relative adoption of virtual care varied by condition with highest rates seen in mental health.

The nutritive value of five edible aquatic insects of Assam—Hemipterans; water bug (Diplonychus rusticus Fabricius) family belostomatidae; giant water bug (Lethocerus indicus Lepeletier and Serville) family belostomatidae; water scorpion (Laccotrephes sp.) family nepidae, water stick (Ranatra sp.) family nepidae; Coleopterans diving beetle (Cybister sp.) family dytiscidae—based on their proximate and elemental composition, antioxidant and antinutritional properties were assessed by using standard methods of analysis. Analytical studies revealed that the selected aquatic insect species have high nutritive value and are rich sources of protein (50.03 to 57.67%) and other nutrients (fat, carbohydrate and crude fiber, etc.) along with superior energy contents (331.98 to 506.38 kJ/100 g). The aquatic insect species also contained appreciable amounts of major and trace dietary elements. Phenol and flavonoid contents reflect its high antioxidant activity (80.82 to 91.47% DPPH inhibition). Tannin (18.50 to 60.76 mg tannic acid equivalent/100 g), phytic acid (11.72 to 97.30 mg/100 g) and oxalic acid (2.93 to 5.34 mg/100 g) as antinutritional compounds were registered below the toxic level (0.52% or 520 mg/100 g). The present findings indicate that the selected aquatic insect species can be considered as ideal candidates for exploration as food and feed to ensure nutritional and livelihood security of this region.

BackgroundThis study reports on physicians' experiences with chronic pain management. For over a decade prescription opioids have been a primary treatment for chronic pain in North America. However, the current opioid epidemic has complicated long-standing practices for chronic pain management which historically involved prescribing pain medication. Caring for patients with chronic pain occurs within a context in which a growing proportion of patients suffer from chronic rather than acute conditions alongside rising social inequities.MethodsOur team undertook an ethnographic approach known as institutional ethnography in the province of Ontario, Canada in order to explore the social organization of chronic pain management from the standpoint of primary care physicians. This paper reports on a subset of this study data, specifically interviews with 19 primary care clinicians and 8 nurses supplemented by 40 hours of observations. The clinicians in our sample were largely primary care physicians and nurses working in urban, rural and Northern settings.FindingsIn their reflections on providing care for patients with chronic pain, many providers describe being most challenged by the work involved in helping patients who also struggled with poverty, mental health and addiction. These frustrations were often complicated by concerns that they could lose their license for inappropriate prescribing, thus shifting their work from providing treatment and care to policing their patients for malingering and opioid abuse.InterpretationOur findings show that care providers find the treatment of patients with chronic pain-especially those patients also experiencing poverty-to be challenging at best, and at worst frustrating and overwhelming. In many instances, their narratives suggested experiences of depersonalization, loss of job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion in relation to providing care for these patients, key dimensions of burnout. In essence, the work that they performed in relation to their patients' social rather than medical needs seems to contribute to these experiences. Their experiences were further exacerbated by the fact that restricting and reducing opioid dosing in patients with chronic pain has become a major focus of care provision.

One of the important characteristics of topological phases of matter is the topology of the underlying manifold on which they are defined. In this paper, we present the sensitivity of such phases of matter to the underlying topology, by studying the phase transitions induced due to the change in the boundary conditions. We claim that these phase transitions are accompanied by broken symmetries in the excitation space and to gain further insight we analyze various signatures like the ground state degeneracy, topological entanglement entropy while introducing the open-loop operator whose expectation value effectively captures the phase transition. Further, we extend the analysis to an open quantum setup by defining effective collapse operators, the dynamics of which cool the system to distinct steady states both of which are topologically ordered. We show that the phase transition between such steady states is effectively captured by the expectation value of the open-loop operator.

Among the many remarkable properties of diamond, the ability to superconduct when heavily doped with boron has attracted much interest in the carbon community. When considering the nanocrystalline boron doped system, the reduced dimensionality and confinement effects have led to several intriguing observations most notably, signatures of a mixed superconducting phase. Here we present ultra-high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging of the grain boundary and demonstrate how the complex microstructure leads to enhanced carrier correlations. We observe hallmark features of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) manifested as the weak anti-localization effect. The enhanced SOC is believed to result from a combination of inversion symmetry breaking at the grain boundary interfaces along with antisymmetric confinement potential between grains, inducing a Rashba-type SOC. From a pronounced zero bias peak in the differential conductance, we demonstrate signatures of a triplet component believed to result from spin mixing caused by tunneling of singlet Cooper pairs through such Rashba-SOC grain boundary junctions.
