Abstract: The possibility to combine planar and van der Waals heterostructures holds great promise for nanoscale electronic devices. Here, the authors report an innovative method to synthesise embedded graphene quantum dots within hexagonal boron nitride matrix for vertical tunnelling single electron transistor applications.
