Air Force Captain Harvey Bowman served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a member of the 43rd Bombardment Group and on General Douglas MacArthur's staff. One oversize scrapbook chiefly documents Bowman's military service in New Guinea and Australia from 1942 to 1945. This fragile volume consists of loose pages with photographs, orders and regulations, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous material tipped in. Photographs depict Bowman's unit and his surroundings in Australia and New Guinea, including both military subjects and the local people and geography. Also includes issues of several different GI newsletters; a 1944 issue of Yank magazine, a 1942 Pacific Islands Yearbook, and a 1929 dance program.

Letters from California, 1852-1853, discuss arrival of immigrants; employment conditions and wages; gambling and social life in San Francisco; investment opportunities; conditions in the gold mines; travel by steamboat to Hangtown (Placerville); churches; crime; Indians; mining profits; cost of land; ranching; blacksmith and plough shop in Santa Clara; digging a canal to take water from the American River to supply Hangtown, Coon Hollow, and Gold Hill; and Webber Run. Two letters by Joseph Bennett from Australia in l853 comment on mining, living conditions, profits of mining, and criminals sent from Great Britain. There is one 1849 letter to Samuel Bennett from relatives in Sheffield, England. There are several items of Jacobs family correspondence, 1880-1923, concerning family affairs, schools, economic conditions in Jackson County, and Monongalia County taxes in 1907.

A section of the volume consists of Taylor's record of visits to the county schools as County Superintendent of Free Schools, 1869, and a record of personal accounts.

Papers, mainly correspondence, of the Hubbard family of New Haven and Litchfield, Connecticut and Wheeling, West Virginia. There are several hundred letters which document the growth of the family and its business enterprises in Wheeling. Correspondents include Gad Smith, Dana Hubbard, Chester D. Hubbard, General John Hubbard, Roger Dorman, H Moran, William P. Hubbard, Dana L. Hubbard, Stephen B. Elkins, John W. Mason, and Waitman T. Willey. There are a number of letters written in Wheeling which comment on the statehood movement and the Civil War activities in the city; and a typescript, "Reminiscences of His Schoolboy Days," by Joseph Bell (1819-1900), describes the early nineteenth century Wheeling.

Longacre, Collector, Papers, 1814-1915. Photostats of deeds, surveys, plats, and grants, the latter signed by Thomas M. Randolph, David Campbell, and William Smith, governors of Virginia, in 1820, 1838, and 1847, for land in Harrison and Doddridge counties; a school attendance sheet for 1865; and a report to the board of education of the number of school-age children in District 4 of Doddridge County in 1869. Also included are a number of photographs taken around Webster Springs showing the hotel, a subscription school, and public school classes, ca.1900, along with two photographs of lumbering activities near Holly River. There is also a typescript, "An Adventure of Two Years in Webster Springs High School, 1915-1917," by Maud M. Hull; and a short history of the Webster Hardwood Lumber Company at Dixie.

From 1843 through 1857 there are notes on churches and social, economic, and political affairs in the Kanawha Valley. Accounts for school and household expenses in New York cover the years, 1858-1862.
