Recycling plastic waste into valuable materials is one of the contemporary challenges. Every year around 50 million tons of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles are used worldwide. The fact that only a part of this amount is being recycled is putting a burden on the environment. Therefore, a technology that can convert PET-based waste materials into useful ones is highly needed. In the present work, attempts have been made to convert PET-based waste materials into a precursor for others. We report an aminolysed product (3) obtained by aminolysis reaction of PET (1) with 1,2 diaminopropane (DAP, 2) under solvent and catalytic free conditions. The highest amount of monomeric product was obtained upon heating the mixture of diamine and PET at 130 °C. The resulting aminolysed product was then converted to a Schiff-base (5) in 25% yield. The chemical structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed using multi-spectroscopic techniques. The title compound, C20H27N3O, was synthesized by condensation reaction of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 2-hydrazinylpyridine, and crystallizes in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group C2/c. The conformation about the C=N bond is E. The dihedral angle between the rings is 18.1 (3)°. An intermolecular N--H⋯N hydrogen bond generates an R2²(8) ring motif. In the crystal, N--H⋯N hydrogen bonds connect pairs of molecules, forming dimers. Density functional theory (DFT) optimized structures at the B3LYP/6--311 G(d,p) level are compared with the experimentally determined molecular structure in the solid state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The title compound, C27H20N2, a Schiff base synthesized via a condensation reaction between anthracene-9-carbaldehyde and N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, crystallizes with three independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The three molecules have slightly varying overall conformations, all having trans conformations with respect to the C=N bond. In the crystal, the packing features N--H···N hydrogen bonds, which connect molecules into chains extending along the c-axis direction, interlinked by C--H···π interactions (minimum H···Cg = 2.65 Å) into sheets lying parallel to (001). In the title compound, C19H15N3O3, which crystallizes as the phenol-imine tautomer, the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings bridged by the NH unit is 47.16 (16)°. The dihedral angle between the rings bridged by the imine unit is 6.24 (15)°; this near coplanarity is reinforced by an intramolecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond, which generates an S(6) ring. In the crystal, N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate [201] C(13) chains. The chains are reinforced and cross-linked by C-H⋯O interactions to generate (001) sheets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
