Seawater intrusion into low-lying coastal ecosystems carries environmental risks. Salinity levels at these coastal ecosystems may vary substantially, causing ecological effects from mortality to several sublethal endpoints, such as depression of rates of feeding, somatic growth, or reproduction. This review attempts to establish safe salinity levels for both terrestrial and freshwater temperate ecosystems by integrating data available in the literature. We have four specific objectives: (i) to identify the most sensitive ecological taxa to seawater intrusion; (ii) to establish maximum acceptable concentrations-environmental quality standards (MAC-EQSs) for sea water (SW) from species sensitivity distributions (SSDs); (iii) to compile from the literature examples of saline intrusion [to be used as predicted environmental concentrations (PECs)] and to compute risk quotients for the temperate zone; and (iv) to assess whether sodium chloride (NaCl) is an appropriate surrogate for SW in ecological risk assessments by comparing SSD-derived values for NaCl and SW and by comparing these with field data. Zooplankton, early life stages of amphibians and freshwater mussels were the most sensitive ecological receptors for the freshwater compartment, while soil invertebrates were the most sensitive ecological receptors for the terrestrial compartment. Hazard concentration 5% (HC 5 ) values, defined as the concentration (herein measured as conductivity) that affects (causes lethal or sublethal effects) 5% of the species in a distribution, computed for SW were over 22 and 40 times lower than the conductivity of natural SW (≈ 52 mS/cm) for the freshwater and soil compartment, respectively. This sensitivity of both compartments means that small increments in salinity levels or small SW intrusions might represent severe risks for low-lying coastal ecosystems. Furthermore, the proximity between HC 5 values for the soil and freshwater compartments suggests that salinized soils might represent an additional risk for nearby freshwater systems. This sensitivity was corroborated by the derivation of risk quotients using real saline intrusion examples (PECs) collected from the literature: risk was >1 in 34 out of 37 examples. By contrast, comparisons of HC 5 values obtained from SSDs in field surveys or mesocosm studies suggest that natural communities are more resilient to salinization than expected. Microbial degradation influences the quality of oil resources. The environmental factors that shape the composition of oil microbial communities are largely unknown because most samples from oil fields are impacted by anthropogenic oil production, perturbing the native ecosystem with exogenous fluids and microorganisms. We investigated the relationship between formation water geochemistry and microbial community composition in undisturbed oil samples. We isolated 43 microliter-sized water droplets naturally enclosed in the heavy oil of the Pitch Lake, Trinidad and Tobago. The water chemistry and microbial community composition within the same water droplet were determined by ion chromatography and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, respectively. The results revealed a high variability in ion concentrations and community composition between water droplets. Microbial community composition was mostly affected by the chloride concentration, which ranged from freshwater to brackish-sea water. Remarkably, microbial communities did not respond gradually to increasing chloride concentration but showed a sudden change to less diverse and uneven communities when exceeding a chloride concentration of 57.3 mM. Plant roots must exclude almost all of the Na + and Cl - in saline soil while taking up water, otherwise these ions would build up to high concentrations in leaves. Plants evaporate c. 50 times more water than they retain, so 98% exclusion would result in shoot NaCl concentrations equal to that of the external medium. Taking up just 2% of the NaCl allows a plant to osmotically adjust the Na + and Cl - in vacuoles, while organic solutes provide the balancing osmotic pressure in the cytoplasm. Anthropogenic salinization of freshwater is a global problem with largely unknown consequences for stream functions. We compared the effects of salt addition (6 g l -1 NaCl) in microcosms on leaf mass loss and microbial parameters in single- and multispecies assemblages of fungal strains ( Heliscus lugdunensis , HELU; Tetracladium marchalianum , TEMA; Flagellospora curta , FLCU) isolated from a reference (R) or salinized (S) stream. Fungal growth and interactions were also assessed. Salinization inhibited leaf decomposition and fungal biomass, but no differences were observed between species, strains or species combinations. Sporulation rates in monocultures were not affected by added salt, but differed among species (FLCU > HELU > TEMA), with S strains releasing more conidia. Fungal assemblages did not differ significantly in total conidia production (either between strains or medium salt concentration). HELU was the dominant species, which also had highest growth and most pronounced antagonistic behaviour. Fungal species, irrespective of origin, largely maintained their function in salinized streams. Strains from salt-contaminated streams did not trade-off conidial production for vegetative growth at high salt levels. The membrane-bound proton-pumping pyrophosphatase (V-PPase), together with the V-type H + -ATPase, generates the proton motive force that drives vacuolar membrane solute transport. Transgenic plants constitutively overexpressing V-PPases were shown to have improved salinity tolerance, but the relative impact of increasing PP i hydrolysis and proton-pumping functions has yet to be dissected. For a better understanding of the molecular processes underlying V-PPase-dependent salt tolerance, we transiently overexpressed the pyrophosphate-driven proton pump (NbVHP) in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves and studied its functional properties in relation to salt treatment by primarily using patch-clamp, impalement electrodes and pH imaging. NbVHP overexpression led to higher vacuolar proton currents and vacuolar acidification. After 3 d in salt-untreated conditions, V-PPase-overexpressing leaves showed a drop in photosynthetic capacity, plasma membrane depolarization and eventual leaf necrosis. Salt, however, rescued NbVHP-hyperactive cells from cell death. Furthermore, a salt-induced rise in V-PPase but not of V-ATPase pump currents was detected in nontransformed plants. The results indicate that under normal growth conditions, plants need to regulate the V-PPase pump activity to avoid hyperactivity and its negative feedback on cell viability. Ipomoea pes-caprae L. is an extremophile halophyte with strong adaptability to seawater and drought. It is widely used in the ecological restoration of coastal areas or degraded islands in tropical and subtropical regions. In this study, a new abscisic acid , stress and ripening , was reported, and is mainly associated with biological functions involved in salt and drought tolerance. Sequence analysis of IpASR showed that this protein contains an ABA/WDS (abscisic acid/water deficit stress) domain, which is a common feature of all plant ASR members. The transgenic overexpressing IpASR Arabidopsis showed higher tolerance to salt and drought stress than the wild type and lower accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and superoxide (O₂ - ) accompanied by increased antioxidant enzyme activity in vivo. IpASR exhibits transcription factor's activity. Therefore, the overexpression of IpASR is involved in the plant response to salt and drought and probably acts as a reactive oxygen species scavenger or transcription factor, and therefore influences physiological processes associated with various abiotic stresses in plants.Arabidopsis is supposed to influence the expression of some genes involved in anti-oxidative and abiotic stresses. The root growth of most crop plants is inhibited by soil salinity. Roots respond by modulating metabolism, gene expression and protein activity, which results in changes in cell wall composition, transport processes, cell size and shape, and root architecture. Here, we focus on the effects of salt stress on cell wall modifying enzymes, cellulose microfibril orientation and non-cellulosic polysaccharide deposition in root elongation zones, as important determinants of inhibition of root elongation, and highlight cell wall changes linked to tolerance to salt stressed and water limited roots. Salt stress induces changes in the wall composition of specific root cell types, including the increased deposition of lignin and suberin in endodermal and exodermal cells. These changes can benefit the plant by preventing water loss and altering ion transport pathways. We suggest that binding of Na + ions to cell wall components might influence the passage of Na + and that Na + can influence the binding of other ions and hinder the function of pectin during cell growth. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different salinity levels in drinking water on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of lamb carcass and meat. Ram lambs (n = 32) were distributed in a completely randomized design with four levels of salinity in the drinking water (640 mg of total dissolved solids (TDS)/L of water, 3188 mg TDS/L water, 5740 mg TDS/L water, and 8326 mg TDS/L water). After slaughter, blending, gutting, and skinning the carcass, hot and biological carcass yields were obtained. Then, the carcasses were cooled at 5 °C for 24 h, and then, the morphometric measurements and the cold carcass yield were determined and the commercial cuts made. In the Longissimus lumborum muscle color, water holding capacity, cooking loss, shear force, and chemical composition were determined. The yields of hot and cold carcass (46.10 and 44.90%), as well as losses to cooling (2.40%) were not affected (P > 0.05) by the salinity levels in the water ingested by the lambs. The meat shear force was 3.47 kg/cm 2 and moisture, crude protein, ether extract, and ash were 73.62, 22.77, 2.5, and 4.3%, respectively. It is possible to supply water with salinity levels of up to 8326 mg TDS/L, because it did not affect the carcass and meat characteristics of Santa Inês lambs.

Anaerobic digestion of high-salinity wastewaters often results in process inhibition due to the susceptibility of the methanogenic archaea. The ability of the microbial community to deal with increased salinity levels is of high importance to ensure process perseverance or recovery after failure. The exact strategy of the microbial community to ensure process endurance is, however, often unknown. In this study, we investigated how the microbial community is able to recover process performance following a disturbance through the application of high-salinity molasses wastewater. After a stable start-up, methane production quickly decreased from 625 ± 17 to 232 ± 35 mL CH 4 L -1 d -1 with a simultaneous accumulation in volatile fatty acids up to 20.5 ± 1.4 g COD L -1 , indicating severe process disturbance. A shift in feedstock from molasses wastewater to waste activated sludge resulted in complete process recovery. However, the bacterial and archaeal communities did not return to their original composition as before the disturbance, despite similar process conditions. Microbial community diversity was recovered to similar levels as before disturbance, which indicates that the metabolic potential of the community was maintained. A mild increase in ammonia concentration after process recovery did not influence methane production, indicating a well-balanced microbial community. Hence, given the change in community composition following recovery after salinity disturbance, it can be assumed that microbial community redundancy was the major strategy to ensure the continuation of methane production, without loss of functionality or metabolic flexibility., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. The changes of Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ contents of 10 year-old Phyllostachys vivax and Ph. glauca and the relationships with the growth and photosynthesis were investigated in the shelter belt of coastal beach with three salt levels, i.e., 0.1% of mild salinity zone, 0.2% of moderate salinity zone, and 0.4% of severe salinity zone. Compared with the mild salinity zone, bamboo density and diameter of Ph. vivax growing in the severe salinity zone decreased by 30.4% and 28.8%, and such reductions were 44.1% and 31.2% for Ph. glauca, respectively. Salinity decreased the biomass of the two species, and the decrease of biomass in shoots was greater than that in underground organs. Compared with the mild salinity zone, the net photosynthetic rate (P n ) and the maximum PS2 photochemical efficiency (F v /F m ) of Ph. vivax and Ph. glauca decreased by 57.6% and 67.7%, and 6.1% and 7.4% in the severe salinity zone, respectively. Ph. vivax had stronger salt-tolerance than Ph. glauca in saline environment. Na + contents in roots, rhizome, stems, and leaves were significantly elevated in Ph. vivax and Ph. glauca with increasing soil salinity, however, the contents of K + , Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ were reduced. Na + was markedly accumulated in roots, and K + was generally enriched in shoots. Salinity led to an evident decline of Ca 2+ in Ph. vivax roots and Mg 2+ in Ph. glauca leaves. The biomass, P n and F v /F m of the two species were usually negatively correlated to Na + content, and positively correlated to K + and Ca 2+ contents.

Increasing soil salinity threatens crop productivity worldwide. High soil salinity is usually accompanied by the low availability of many mineral nutrients. Here, we investigated the potential role that the H(+)- PPase could play in optimizing P use efficiency under salinity in plants. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing either SeVP1 or SeVP2 from Salicornia europaea outperformed the wild-types under low phosphate (Pi) as well as low Pi plus salt conditions. Our results suggested that H(+)-PPase could increase external Pi acquisition through promoting root development and upregulating phosphate transporters, thus to protect plants from Pi limiting stress. This study provides a potential strategy for improving crop yields challenged by the co-occurrence of abiotic stresses.

Nuclear factor Y (NF-Y) is a highly conserved transcription factor comprising NF-YA, NF-YB and NF-YC subunits. To date, the roles of NF-Y subunit in plant still remain elusive. In this study, a subunit NF-YB (PwNF-YB3), was isolated from Picea wilsonii Mast. and its role was studied. PwNF-YB3 transcript was detected in all vegetative and reproductive tissues with higher levels in stem and root and was greatly induced by salinity, heat and PEG but not by cold and ABA treatment. Over-expression of PwNF-YB3 in Arabidopsis showed a significant acceleration in the onset of flowering and resulted in more vigorous seed germination and significant tolerance for seedlings under salinity, drought and osmotic stress compared with wild type plants. Transcription levels of salinity-responsive gene (SOS3) and drought-induced gene (CDPK1) were substantially higher in transgenic Arabidopsis than in wild-type plants. Importantly, CBF pathway markers (COR15B, KIN1, LEA76), but not ABA pathway markers CBF4, were greatly induced under condition of drought. The nuclear localization showed that NF-YB3 acted as a transcription factor. Health-promoting compounds, antioxidant and myrosinase activity in the sprouts of three broccoli cultivars under 40 mM, 80 mM and 160 mM NaCl were investigated. LangYan (LY) sprouts had the richest health-promoting compounds among the evaluated cultivars. Treatment of 40 mM and 80 mM NaCl significantly decreased the content of ascorbic acid and total phenolic as well as antioxidant activity, but did not affect glucoraphanin, sulforaphane and myrosinase activity compared to the control. However, 160 mM NaCl treatment significantly enhanced the level of total phenolic, glucoraphanin, sulforaphane, antioxidant and myrosinase activity, while significantly decreased ascorbic acid content. The results suggest that 160 mM NaCl treatment would enhance antioxidant activity and sulforaphane yield in broccoli sprouts. The health-promoting value of broccoli sprouts depends on plant genotype and could be affected by NaCl stress.

Transgenerational plasticity in plants enables rapid adaptation to environmental changes, allowing organisms and their offspring to adapt to the environment without altering their underlying DNA. In this study, we investigated the transgenerational plasticity in salinity tolerance of rice plants using a reciprocal transplant experimental strategy. Our aim was to assess whether non-genetic environment-induced phenotypic modifications and transgenerational salinity affect the salinity tolerance of progeny while excluding nuclear genomic factors for two generations. Using salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive rice genotypes, we observed that the parentally salt-stressed salt-sensitive genotype displayed greater growth performance, photosynthetic activity, yield performance, and transcriptional responses than the parentally non-stressed salt-sensitive plants under salt stress conditions. Surprisingly, salt stress-exposed salt-tolerant progeny did not exhibit as much salinity tolerance as salt stress-exposed salt-sensitive progeny under salt stress. Our findings indicate that the phenotypes of offspring plants differed based on the environment experienced by their ancestors, resulting in heritable transgenerational phenotypic modifications in salt-sensitive genotypes via maternal effects. These results elucidated the mechanisms underlying transgenerational plasticity in salinity tolerance, providing valuable insights into how plants respond to changing environmental conditions. Salinity is a major abiotic stress that hinders plant development and productivity and influences agricultural yield. Seed priming is a technique used to boost germination and seedling growth under abiotic stress. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of seed priming with potassium nitrate (KNO3) at various levels (0%, 0.50%, 1.00% and 1.50%) under salt stress (0, 75, 100 mM NaCl) on two maize verities (MNH360 and 30T60) for the growth, development and metabolic attributes results revealed that in maize variety MNH360, KNO3priming's significantly enhanced growth parameters than in maize variety 30T60 under control and salt-stressed conditions. Priming with KNO3enhanced carotenoids and total chlorophyll in the 30T60 variety that protected the maize plants from salt stress. Nevertheless, it was shown that priming with 1.00% KNO3acts as safeguarded to protect them from oxidative damage by salt stress minimizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation through increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and total soluble protein. The findings of the present study confirm that the use of the KNO3seed priming technique is a low-cost, environmentally friendly technique for mitigating adverse impacts of salt stress in maize crops by activating the antioxidant defense system and improving chlorophyll and osmolyte contents. Salinity is a major constraint limiting the yield of tomatoes. However, grafting strategies may help to overcome the salt toxicity of this important horticultural species if appropriate rootstocks are identified. The present study aimed to test a new rootstock, JUPAFORT1, obtained by crossing the glycophyte Solanum lycopersicum (cv. Poncho Negro) with the halophyte wild-related species Solanum chilense to improve the salinity tolerance of the Chilean tomato landrace Old Limachino Tomato (OLT). Intact OLT plants were exposed to 0, 80, or 160 mM of NaCl for 21 days at the vegetative stage and compared with self-grafted (L/L) and Limachino plants grafted on JUPAFORT1 rootstock (L/R) under a completely randomized design. JUPAFORT1 increased OLT scion vigor in the absence of salt but did not significantly increase fresh weight under stress conditions. However, JUPAFORT1 confers to the scion an anisohydric behavior contrasting with the isohydric behavior of L and L/L plants as indicated by measurements of stomatal conductance; L/R plants were able to maintain their metabolic status despite a slight decrease in the leaf's relative water content. JUPAFORT1 rootstock also enabled the maintenance of photosynthetic pigment concentrations in the scion in contrast to L and L/L plants, which exhibited a decrease in photosynthetic pigments under stress conditions. L/R plants encountered oxidative stress at the highest stress intensity (160 mM of NaCl) only, while L and L/L plants suffered from oxidative damage at a lower dose (80 mM of NaCl). L/R plants behaved as includer plants and did not sequester Na+ in the root system, in contrast to L and L/L, which behaved as excluder plants retaining Na+ in the root system to avoid its translocation to the shoots. The expression of genes coding for ion transporters (HKT1.1, HKT1.2, LKT1, SKOR, SOS2, and SOS3) in the root system was not modified by salinity in L/R. In contrast, their expression varied in response to salinity in L and L/L. Overall, L/R plants exhibited higher physiological stability than L/L or L plants in response to an increasing NaCl dose and did not require additional energy investment to trigger an adaptative response to salinity. This suggests that the constitutive salinity tolerance of the halophyte S. chilense was maintained in the interspecific rootstock. JUPAFORT1 issued from S. lycopersicum x S. chilense may thus improve salt-stress resilience in OLT tomatoes. This study aims to compare the physiological and biochemical behaviour of four varieties of Medicago sativa differing in origin: Tamacine (Algerian), Triade (Italian), Maxigrowth (American), and Zanandrea (Australian). These varieties were subjected to saline stress (100 mM L-1) for 45 days at the early flowering stage. The results show that salinity had a depressive effect on all four varieties, reducing both fresh and dry matter. A decrease of more than 15% in dry weight was observed in the Tamacine genotype, but this reduction was more pronounced in the Zanandrea genotype. A significant increase in proline and soluble sugars content was recorded in the leaves (p = 0.000) under saline stress. Tamacine appears to be the most resistant variety, demonstrating biochemical adaptation by accumulating more osmoprotectants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar‐driven interfacial evaporation toward highly salinity brine has drawn great attention due to its distinct advantages. Generally, most studies focus on how to improve the water evaporation rate while restrain the salt accumulation on evaporators. In fact, generating/recycling the salt during the evaporation process is of equal importance since the salt is also valuable. However, how to realize high salt generation rate while keep high water evaporation rate is still a great challenge, since high‐efficiency water evaporation and salt accumulation is conflicting in most cases. Herein, both high evaporation rate and high salt formation rate have been achieved via surface engineering of a 3D evaporator: 1) Constructing surround‐Janus structure with different wettability around a 3D evaporator; 2) Enhancing salt crystallization via introduction of tapes on special surface. Thanks to the distinct surface engineering, the water evaporation rate toward highly salinity brine (20 wt%) can reach up to ≈2.8 kg m−2 h−1, while the salt formation rate can be as high as ≈0.1 kg m−2 h−1. Moreover, the high performance can be well maintained even when the evaporator is irradiated with different angles. Specially, as a proof of concept, the potential of the 3D evaporator for Li+/Na+ separation is also demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the Early Cretaceous, massive evaporite accumulations formed in the opening South Atlantic. However, the depositional model of these salts is still poorly constrained at the scale of the West African margin. The present study focuses along the proximal domain of the south Gabon‐Congo‐Cabinda margin and is based on (i) log interpretations of 246 wells crossing undeformed to weakly deformed evaporite intervals and (ii) a structural characterization of the basement. The evaporites show 11 regional evaporite depositional cycles (CI–CXI) bounded by meter‐thick shale beds. The cycles display alternating meter‐scale carnallite‐halite beds that can be correlated over several hundred kilometres, and CVI, CVII, CVIIIa and CX culminate in localized tachyhydrite accumulations. Cross section correlations and isopach maps help to understand the palaeogeographical evolution of each cycle and depositional environments that evolved from relatively deep at the base of cycles, to very shallow at their top. CI formed a mosaic of halite‐prone depocenters deposited in pre‐salt topographic relief. CII and CIII were deposited uniformly over a flattened basin in a highly extended brine pond. From CIV to CVIIIa, the stratigraphic architecture of the salts was shaped by freshwater inflow sourced from the north and possible basement movements. This setting, together with an increased confinement of the proximal domain from the distal one with basin drawdown, favoured the development of depocenters with perennial subaqueous conditions and extreme salinities, in which more than 70 m of tachyhydrite accumulation could locally be preserved. From CVIIIb to CXI, the basin returned to a flat depositional setting without well‐developed depocenters and with increasing subsidence westwards. Marine influx increased starting from CX, allowing the deposition of sulphate beds. The salt section is capped by anhydrite deposits interbedded with clastic and dolomite, before the final marine invasion of the basin. For the first time, this study provides a large‐scale depositional tectonostratigraphic setting of the Aptian salts in the proximal domain of the West African margin. The results are of interest for K‐Mg salts exploration resources in the Aptian and pave the way for further investigation of the salt depositional environment in the distal domain of the margin. Seed conditioning with ultraviolet light (UV-C) might (1) improve crop yield and quality, (2) reduce the use of agrochemicals during cultivation, and (3) increase plant survival in high salinity environments. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of UV-C conditioning of white oat seeds at two doses (0.85 and 3.42 kJ m−2) under salinity stress (100 mM NaCl). Seeds were sown on germination paper and kept in a germination chamber at 20°C. Germination and seedling growth parameters were evaluated after 5 and 10 days. Data demonstrated that excess salt reduced germination and initial growth of white oat seedlings. In all the variables analyzed, exposure of seeds to UV-C under salt stress exerted a positive effect compared to non-irradiated control. The attenuating influence of UV-C in germination was greater at 0.85 than at 3.42 kJ m−2. Thus, data indicate that conditioning white oat seeds in UV-C light produced greater tolerance to salt stress. Salinity is a major constraint for crop productivity as it reduces agricultural land area. This problem can be ameliorated by the application of organic materials such as manure, which plays an important role in supporting plant growth and reducing soil toxicity by binding toxic compounds. The purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of manure in overcoming the impact of salt stress on shallots. Here randomised block design (RBD) consisting of 2 factors and 3 replications was used. The first factor is salinity levels (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM), and the second is manure doses (0, 10 and 20 t·ha-1). This study finds that the application of 20 t·ha-1 of manure decreases the shallot's leaf tissue thickness, but the 50 mM of salinity significantly increases it. Then, the application of 20 t·ha-1 of manure increases the shallot's number of tillers and bulbs, while the 100 mM of salinity significantly decreases its number of tillers. The application of 10 t·ha-1 of manure decreases the proline and flavonoids content of the plant's leaves. In addition, plants treated and not treated with manure under 50 mM of salinity have higher proline and flavonoids levels in their leaf. Drought and salinity are two abiotic stresses that affect plant productivity. We exposed 2-year-old Platycladus orientalis saplings to single and combined stress of drought and salinity. Subsequently, the responses of physiological traits and soil properties were investigated. Biochemical traits such as leaf and root phytohormone content significantly increased under most stress conditions. Single drought stress resulted in significantly decreased nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) content in stems and roots, while single salt stress and combined stress resulted in diverse response of NSC content. Xylem water potential of P. orientalis decreased significantly under both single drought and single salt stress, as well as the combined stress. Under the combined stress of drought and severe salt, xylem hydraulic conductivity significantly decreased while NSC content was unaffected, demonstrating that the risk of xylem hydraulic failure may be greater than carbon starvation. The tracheid lumen diameter and the tracheid double wall thickness of root and stem xylem was hardly affected by any stress, except for the stem tracheid lumen diameter, which was significantly increased under the combined stress. Soil ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and available potassium content was only significantly affected by single salt stress, while soil available phosphorus content was not affected by any stress. Single drought stress had a stronger effect on the alpha diversity of rhizobacteria communities, and single salt stress had a stronger effect on soil nutrient availability, while combined stress showed relatively limited effect on these soil properties. Regarding physiological traits, responses of P. orientalis saplings under single and combined stress of drought and salt were diverse, and effects of combined stress could not be directly extrapolated from any single stress. Compared to single stress, the effect of combined stress on phytohormone content and hydraulic traits was negative to P. orientalis saplings, while the combined stress offset the negative effects of single drought stress on NSC content. Our study provided more comprehensive information on the response of the physiological traits and soil properties of P. orientalis saplings under single and combined stress of drought and salt, which would be helpful to understand the adapting mechanism of woody plants to abiotic stress. An aqueous sodium chloride solution was injected at a controlled rate into a granular bed in a quasi-two-dimensional cell. The granular bed was made of dried, highly water-absorbent gel particles whose swelling rate was controlled by the salinity of the injected fluid. At a high salinity level (low swelling rate), high injection rate, and short timescale, the injected fluid percolated between the gel particles in an isotropic manner. Meanwhile, at a low salinity level (high swelling rate), low injection rate, and long timescale, the gel particles clogged the flow path, resulting in anisotropic branch-like structures of the injected fluid front. The transition of the injection pattern could be understood based on the ratio of the characteristic timescales of swelling and injection. Moreover, the clogged pattern showed an oscillatory pressure drop whose amplitude was increased with higher salinity. In arid and semi-arid areas salinity reduces agricultural productivity. Biostimulants based on amino acids promote plant growth and yield while significantly reducing abiotic stresses-related injuries. As a result, current study assessed the effect of biostimulants based on free amino acids on Moldavian balm under salinity stress. A factorial experiment using a randomized complete block design with three replications was done. The plants were imposed with four levels of salinity (0, 20, 40 and 60 mM NaCl) and were treated using four formulations of amino acids (Kadostim, Fosnutren, Humiforte and Aminolforte). The results revealed that increasing the salinity level significantly reduced growth parameters such as fresh and dry weight of biomass, root length, shoot length, secondary branch length, crown diameter, internode number, internode length, secondary branch number, leaf number and biochemical parameters such as RWC, chlorophyll a, b, total and carotenoids while increased some osmolytes such as soluble sugar and proline in root and shoot. Leaf spraying of the bio-stimulates based on amino acids, significantly improved the negative effects of salinity stress on growth and biochemical parameters in Moldavian balm, and among them Kadostim had the most significantly positive effects on morphological and biochemical parameters and followed by Aminolforte. Soil salinity and poor-quality irrigation water in Florida, USA, have become major issues for agricultural crops. Since Florida is one of the major producers of cabbage in the country, soil salinization may significantly impact this industry. Chinese cabbage varieties are very popular in the farming community of Florida and are widely cultivated. In the present study, four Chinese cabbage varieties ('Bilko', 'Red Dragon', 'Rubicon', and 'Minuet') were tested for their tolerance, agronomic, physiological, and nutritional responses to irrigation with 0, 100, and 200 mM NaCl solutions. The results showed that NaCl irrigation has decreased the growth of the tested plants, with 'Bilko' being the most tolerant one, showing higher production in both control and salt stress conditions. Although NaCl stress has increased electrolyte leakage in plant leaves, it has no significant effect on proline contents, and chlorophyll contents tend to increase with salinity stress, highlighting the physiological responses of all tested varieties. Among nutritional contents, there were no significant differences, but a few treatment groups showed a significant increase and decrease in nutrient contents. To better understand the salt tolerance of the wild rice, Oryza coarctata, root tissue‐specific untargeted comparative metabolomic profiling was performed against the salt‐sensitive Oryza sativa. Under control, O. coarctata exhibited abundant levels of most metabolites, while salt caused their downregulation in contrast to metabolites in O. sativa. Under control conditions, itaconate, vanillic acid, threonic acid, eicosanoids, and a group of xanthin compounds were comparatively abundant in O. coarctata. Similarly, eight amino acids showed constitutive abundance in O. coarctata. In contrast, under control, glycerolipid abundances were lower in O. coarctata and salt stress further reduced their abundance. Most phospholipids also showed a distribution similar to the glycerolipids. Fatty acyls were however significantly induced in O. coarctata but organic acids were prominently induced in O. sativa. Changes in metabolite levels suggest that there was upregulation of the arachidonic acid metabolism in O. coarctata. In addition, the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis as well as cutin, suberin, and wax biosynthesis were also more enriched in O. coarctata, likely contributing to its anatomical traits responsible for salt tolerance. The comparative variation in the number of metabolites like gelsemine, allantoin, benzyl alcohol, specific phospholipids, and glycerolipids may play a role in maintaining the superior growth of O. coarctata in salt. Collectively, our results offer a comprehensive analysis of the metabolite profile in the roots of salt‐tolerant O. coarctata and salt‐sensitive O. sativa, which confirm potential targets for metabolic engineering to improve salt tolerance and resilience in commercial rice genotypes. Modern Solanum melongena varieties have been developed to improve the content of phenolics, sugars, and nutritionally relevant minerals in fruit. However, fruit composition might be altered due to abiotic stresses like salinity. Physiological and fruit quality traits were evaluated in four eggplant landraces under usual irrigation and moderately salty irrigation conditions (80 mM NaCl). Growing parameters measured included root length, leaf surface, and fresh weight, while fruit composition traits included sugars, phenolics, and mineral content determinations. Few differences were observed for agronomic traits, probably due to the mild tolerance of eggplant to salinity. Some varieties showed signs of salt tolerance like an increase in primary root length to overcome salt stress. Glucose was the metabolite more affected by the salt treatment in the fruit, while phenolic compounds and other metabolites studied were not altered. Significant differences were observed in the main minerals Na, K, Ca, P, and Mg, both between genotypes and treatments. Although salinity produced changes in some physiological and developmental traits, the composition of the fruit was not significantly modified for the accessions tested. Spontaneous water imbibition into matrix blocks can be a significant oil recovery mechanism in fractured reservoirs. Many enhanced oil recovery methods, such as injection of modified salinity brine, are proposed for improving spontaneous imbibition efficacy. Many scaling equations are developed in the literature to predict spontaneous imbibition oil recovery. However, almost none of them included the impact of the diversity in ionic composition of injected and connate brines and the blending/interaction of a low salinity imbibing brine with a higher salinity connate brine. In this research, these two issues are included to propose new scaling equations for the scaling of spontaneous imbibition oil recovery by modified salinity imbibing brines. This study uses experimental data of the spontaneous imbibition of modified salinity brines into oil-saturated rock samples with different lithologies containing an irreducible high salinity connate brine. The collected tests from the literature were performed at high temperatures and on aged altered wettability cores. The results of 110 available spontaneous imbibition laboratory experiments (85, 12 and 13 tests on chalks, dolomites and sandstones, respectively) are gathered. This research initially shows the poor ability of three selected convenient scaling equations from the literature to scale imbibition recovery by modified salinity brine. Then, our newly proposed technique to find the scaling equation for spontaneous imbibition recovery by modified salinity brine, during the abovementioned conditions in limestones (Bassir et al. in J Pet Explor Prod Technol 13(1): 79–99, 2023. https://doi.org/10.1007/s13202-022-01537-7) is used in chalks, dolomites and sandstones to develop the three new scaling equations. The transition from vegetative growth to reproductive development is a critical developmental switch in flowering plants to ensure a successful life cycle. However, while the genes controlling flowering are well-known in model plants, they are less well-understood in crops. In this work, we generated potato lines both silenced and overexpressed for the expression of StBBX24, a clock-controlled gene encoding a B-box protein located in the cytosol and nuclear chromatin fraction. We revealed that Solanum tuberosum lines silenced for StBBX24 expression displayed much earlier flowering than wild-type plants. Conversely, plants overexpressing StBBX24 mostly did not produce flower buds other than wild-type plants. In addition, RT-qPCR analyses of transgenic silenced lines revealed substantial modifications in the expression of genes functioning in flowering. Furthermore, S. tuberosum lines silenced for StBBX24 expression displayed susceptibility to high salinity with a lower capacity of the antioxidant system and strongly decreased expression of genes encoding Na+ transporters that mediate salt tolerance, contrary to the plants with StBBX24 overexpression. Soil salinization poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity, necessitating innovative agronomic strategies to mitigate its impact. This study focuses on improving salt stress resistance in tomato plants through the application of silicon (Si) in roots. A greenhouse experiment was carried out under normal conditions (control, and 1 and 4 mM Si) and under salinity stress (salt control, and 1 and 4 mM Si). Various parameters were analyzed in leaves and roots. Under normal conditions, tomato plants grown in non-saline conditions exhibited some toxicity when exposed to Na2SiO3. As for the experiments under salt stress conditions, Si mitigated oxidative damage, preserving root cell membrane integrity. The concentration of malondialdehyde was reduced by 69.5%, that of proline was reduced by 56.4% and there was a 57.6% decrease in catalase activity for tomato plants treated with 1 mM Si under salt stress. Furthermore, Fe uptake and distribution, under salt conditions, increased from 91 to 123 mg kg−1, the same concentration as that obtained for the normal control. In all cases, the lower dose produced better results under normal conditions than the 4 mM dose. Salinity reduces crop yields and quality, causing global economic losses. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) improve plant physiological and metabolic processes and abiotic stress resistance. This study examined the effects of foliar ZnO-NPs at 75 and 150 mg/L on tomato Kecskeméti 549 plants to alleviate salt stress caused by 150 mM NaCl. The precipitation procedure produced ZnO-NPs that were characterized using UV-VIS, TEM, STEM, DLS, EDAX, Zeta potential, and FTIR. The study assessed TPCs, TFCs, total hydrolyzable sugars, total free amino acids, protein, proline, H2O2, and MDA along with plant height, stem width, leaf area, and SPAD values. The polyphenolic burden was also measured by HPLC. With salt stress, plant growth and chlorophyll content decreased significantly. The growth and development of tomato plants changed by applying the ZnO-NPs. Dosages of ZnO-NPs had a significant effect across treatments. ZnO-NPs also increased chlorophyll, reduced stress markers, and released phenolic chemicals and proteins in the leaves of tomatoes. ZnO-NPs reduce salt stress by promoting the uptake of minerals. ZnO-NPs had beneficial effects on tomato plants when subjected to salt stress, making them an alternate technique to boost resilience in saline soils or low-quality irrigation water. Negative effects of salt stress may be counteracted by adequate management of sulfated nutrition. Herein, we applied 3.50, 4.25, and 5.00 mM SO42− in a nutrient solution to counteract salt stress induced by 75 and 150 mM NaCl in cabbage cv. Royal. The increase in NaCl concentration from 75 to 150 mM reduced the contents of macronutrients and micronutrients in the shoot. When increasing from 3.50 to 4.25 mM SO42−, the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) in shoots were enhanced, at both concentrations of NaCl. Increasing from 3.50 to 4.25 mM SO42− enhanced iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and sodium (Na) concentrations with 75 mM NaCl. With 150 mM NaCl, the increase from 3.50 to 4.25 mM SO42− enhanced the contents of Cu and Mn, but also those of Na. Chlorophylls a, b, and total decreased as the concentration of SO42− increased in plants treated with 150 mM NaCl. With 75 mM NaCl, carotenoid concentration had a positive relationship with SO42−. Hence, the 4.25 mM SO42− concentration increased the contents of macronutrients and micronutrients in the presence of 75 mM NaCl, while, with 150 mM NaCl, it improved the contents of macronutrients except K. The chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio remained close to 3 when the plants were treated with 5.00 mM SO42−, regardless of NaCl. Similarly, this level of SO42− increased the concentration of carotenoids, which translated into reductions in the total chlorophyll/carotenoid ratios, indicating a protective effect of the photosynthetic apparatus. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a facultative halophyte renowned for its importance in enhancing food security, and it supports forage production across diverse climatic regions. The objective of this study is to examine the impacts of multiple pre-treatment methods on C. quinoa seed (Titicaca cultivar) germination parameters, identify the optimum pre-treatment to diminish the consequence of salinity, and promote the productivity of this crop, especially in marginal environments. For this purpose, a spectrum of sodium chloride (NaCl) concentrations spanning from 0 to 500 mM and gibberellic acid (GA3) concentrations ranging from 0 to 300 ppm were tested, and mechanical scarification (MS) was carried out. The effect of a combination of these pretreatment NaCl/GA3 and NaCl/MS on the germination parameters of C. quinoa seed was also investigated. The results showed that the total germination, vigor index, and germination index decreased progressively with an increase in salinity. Hence, salinity exhibited a notable influence on most germination parameters. Moreover, seeds scarified with 500 mM of NaCl negatively affected all measured parameters. In contrast, gibberellic acid applied at 200 ppm was effective on most of the parameters measured, particularly under 100 mM of NaCl. Salt bladders and salt glands of recretohalophytes are specific salt-secreting structures evolving from trichomes that allow plants to adapt to extreme environmental conditions (such as salinity or drought) by precise regulation of the salt load in metabolically active leaf tissues. The knowledge of the process by which these structures are formed and operate may provide a blueprint for introducing them into cultivated crops thus creating climate-resilient genotypes. This review summarizes the recent progress in understanding mechanisms involved in the development and operation of salt bladders and glands, at physiological, molecular, and genetic levels. We show that these processes differ depending on the anatomical structure of glands (unicellular vs bi-cellular vs multicellular), as well as between salt glands and bladders. We also show that recretohalophytes with different types of salt glands may have different trichome development. We discuss new evidence for the role of vesicular transport in salt secretion and highlight the importance of multi-omics in understanding mechanisms of salt secretion and sequestration in epidermal bladder cells, and their contribution to salinity stress tolerance in plants. The aim of the study was to highlight morpho-physiological changes like plant height, spike characteristics and stomata features in wheat induced by salt stress. Seeds of wheat var. Alex were sown, in mezo-phyto-cosmos, in five repetitions, under six saline doses, 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 mM NaCl. The experiment was conducted under field conditions. The assessments including plant height, arista, and spike length were taken and evaluated at the end of the experiment. Adaxial stomatal imprints have been sampled and the stomata density (number of stomata/mm2) and their size were assessed under the microscope. Wheat morphological parameters were affected by the highest salinity dose. Plant height was significantly reduced in the 60 and 75 mM NaCl doses by 16% and 20%. The spike length showed a significant reduction only in the highest saline dose treatment. Arista length registered the highest value in the 15 mM NaCl treatment with 23% more compared to the control. Stomata density reported the highest value in the 15 mM NaCl treatment, significantly higher compared to the 0 mM NaCl dose. Euglena sp. is rich in primary and secondary metabolite compounds. This cosmopolitan organism can survive extreme conditions such as salt stress because it can increase cell growth rate and metabolism. This mass cultivation research uses an open pond system that is very vulnerable to contamination, so variations in salinity of MgCl2 and CaCl2 are used as treatments because they minimize contamination. The research examines the correlation of salt types to cell growth rate, biomass, monosaccharide profile, paramylon, pigment, and lipid of Euglena sp. Research methods include preparation, medium making, mass cultivation, and measurement of test parameters. Data were analyzed through One-Way ANOVA followed by DMRT, with a 5% confidence level. Based on the research result, the highest value of biomass and paramylon content and productivity at CaCl2 treatment with consecutive values 0.013 ± 0.001, 0.002 ± 0.000, 9.556 ± 0.070, and 0.149 ± 0.019. Monosaccharides analysis produced in the form of sucrose, glucose, fructose, and arabinose amounted to < 10 ppm. CaCl2 treatment produced the highest sucrose of 6251 ppm. The highest chlorophyll-a and carotenoid pigments are located at CaCl2 treatment, respectively (1.698 ± 0.051)b and (0.500 ± 0.032)b. At the same time, the salt treatment has a significant effect on lipid content. To summarize, almost all metabolite compounds were highest in CaCl2 treatment. The increase in soil salinization represents a current challenge for plant productivity, as most plants, including crops, are mainly salt-sensitive species. The identification of molecular traits underpinning salt tolerance represents a primary goal for breeding programs. In this scenario, the study of intraspecific variability represents a valid tool for investigating natural genetic resources evolved by plants in different environmental conditions. As a model system, Arabidopsis thaliana, including over 750 natural accessions, represents a species extensively studied at phenotypic, metabolic, and genomic levels under different environmental conditions. Two haplogroups showing opposite root architecture (shallow or deep roots) in response to auxin flux perturbation were identified and associated with EXO70A3 locus variations. Here, we studied the influence of these genetic backgrounds on plant salt tolerance. Eight accessions belonging to the two haplogroups were tested for salt sensitivity by exposing them to moderate (75 mM NaCl) or severe (150 mM NaCl) salt stress. Salt-tolerant accessions were found in both haplogroups, and all of them showed efficient ROS-scavenging ability. Even if an exclusive relation between salt tolerance and haplogroup membership was not observed, the modulation of root system architecture might also contribute to salt tolerance. The response of 14 Hollyhock (Alcea rosea L.) varieties to salinity were evaluated in a field experiment over two growing seasons. Carotenoid, Chl a, Chl b, total Chl, proline and MDA content, CAT, APX and GPX activity and petal and seeds yields were determined in order to investigate the mechanism of salt tolerance exhibited by Hollyhock, and too identify salt tolerant varieties. Overall, the photosynthetic pigment content,petal and seed yields were reduced by salt stress. Whereas the proline and MDA content, and the CAT, APX and GPX activities increased as salt levels increased. However, the values of the measured traits were dependent upon the on the level of salt stress, the Varietie and the interaction between the two variables. Based upon the smallest reduction in petal yield, the Masouleh variety was shown to be the most salt tolerant, when grown under severe salt stress. However, based upon the smallest reduction in seed yield, Khorrmabad was the most tolerant variety to severe salt stress. These data suggest that the selection of more salt tolerant Hollyhock genotypes may be possible based upon the wide variation in tolerance to salinity exhibited by the varieties tested. Salt stress significantly impacts the functions of the photosynthetic apparatus, with varying degrees of damage to its components. Photosystem II (PSII) is more sensitive to environmental stresses, including salinity, than photosystem I (PSI). This study investigated the effects of different salinity levels (0 to 200 mM NaCl) on the PSII complex in isolated thylakoid membranes from hydroponically grown pea (Pisum sativum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) plants treated with NaCl for 5 days. The data revealed that salt stress inhibits the photochemical activity of PSII (H2O → BQ), affecting the energy transfer between the pigment–protein complexes of PSII (as indicated by the fluorescence emission ratio F695/F685), QA reoxidation, and the function of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC). These processes were more significantly affected in pea than in maize under salinity. Analysis of the oxygen evolution curves after flashes and continuous illumination showed a stronger influence on the PSIIα than PSIIβ centers. The inhibition of oxygen evolution was associated with an increase in misses (α), double hits (β), and blocked centers (SB) and a decrease in the rate constant of turnover of PSII reaction centers (KD). Salinity had different effects on the two pathways of QA reoxidation in maize and pea. In maize, the electron flow from QA- to plastoquinone was dominant after treatment with higher NaCl concentrations (150 mM and 200 mM), while in pea, the electron recombination on QAQB- with oxidized S2 (or S3) of the OEC was more pronounced. Analysis of the 77 K fluorescence emission spectra revealed changes in the ratio of the light-harvesting complex of PSII (LHCII) monomers and trimers to LHCII aggregates after salt treatment. There was also a decrease in pigment composition and an increase in oxidative stress markers, membrane injury index, antioxidant activity (FRAP assay), and antiradical activity (DPPH assay). These effects were more pronounced in pea than in maize after treatment with higher NaCl concentrations (150 mM–200 mM). Ferns are an essential group of forest plants, however their salt tolerance is poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 50 or 100 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) on the growth, biomass, and ionic potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+) and sodium (Na+) concentrations in the fronds of evergreen ferns: Cyrtomium fortunei var. clivicola, Polystichum setiferum, and Polystichum setiferum 'Proliferum'. Visual quality of the plants immediately after the stress application and after the overwintering period was also carried out. Salinity resulted in the relative chlorophyll content reduction with exposure to increasing NaCl for all ferns. In C. fortunei var. clivicola and P. setiferum, salt stress led to a decrease in plant height, frond length, and weight of the above-ground part of plants as well as visual quality. For P. setiferum 'Proliferum' there was not a significant reduction in fresh and dry weight. Moreover, P. setiferum 'Proliferum' grown under salt stress maintained stable K+ concentrations in the fronds and high aesthetic appearance both immediately after the stress factor and after several months. In conclusion, P. setiferum 'Proliferum' was relatively salt-tolerant and Cyrtomium fortunei var. clivicola and P. setiferum were sensitive to soil salinity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eddy‐induced salt transport is essential in maintaining the oceanic salinity balance and global climate. However, the paucity of in situ measurements poses challenges in obtaining the spatial structure of the eddy salt transport globally. Here, we conduct a global estimation of eddy‐induced salinity anomalies and salt transport by eddy movement using 2 million historical hydrographic profile measurements and satellite‐based eddy observations spanning from 1993 to 2019. The results demonstrate rich geographic and vertical variability in the salinity anomalies induced by eddies across the global ocean. Vertical sign switches of salinity anomalies within eddies are observed in the tropical and subtropical oceans, as well as in the Kuroshio Extension region. Additionally, meridional sign switches of eddy‐induced salinity anomalies are observed in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current region. By integrating eddy occurrence probability, we refine the methodology for estimating eddy‐induced salt transport, and provide global spatial patterns of both meridional and zonal salt transport induced by eddy movement at each 2° × 2° grid. Significant salt transport by meridional eddy movement is observed in the mid‐latitude oceans, with the peak zonal‐depth integrated salt transport reaching 106 kg·s− 1 in the mid‐latitudes of the southern hemisphere. Specifically, the Brazil‐Malvinas Confluence region is identified as a highly efficient pathway for meridional salt transport, with a magnitude of − 1.28 × 106 kg·s− 1, significantly surpassing other regions in the global ocean. The aim of this research is to craft a material that effectively curbs the higher level of heavy metals and salinity in brine from desalination plants. Through thorough experimentation, an optimized form of Halloysite Nanoclay was achieved, which was further enhanced with 8-hydroxyquinoline for increased metal removal efficiency. The enhanced nanoclay's adsorption capabilities were carefully fine-tuned, displaying a type III adsorption isotherm and a significant surface area (72.8 m² g-1). The modified Halloysite nanoclay demonstrates improved efficiency in removing metal ions, achieving rates of 79.12 % for Zn, 83.33 % for Fe, 81.18 % for Ni, and 79.81 % for Cu. Notably, this advanced material proved its prowess in purifying heavy metals. The prepared material displayed noteworthy recycling capacity, substantiated through a series of experiments. This study highlights the effectiveness of using modified Halloysite nanoclay to treat desalination plant brine sustainably, opening avenues for further research and practical applications in this area. The present study evaluated the impact of ultrasonic waves on the degradation of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) gel structures, focusing on the effects of sonication time, NaCl concentration, and HPAM solution concentration. Results showed that both sonication time and salinity levels play a crucial role in the degradation of HPAM gel, with an increase in sonication time leading to a decrease in the remaining gel and the presence of NaCl in the solution decreasing the residual time required for degradation. The results also revealed that higher levels of salinity expedite the degradation of the gel. In addition, the study discovered that a rise in polymer solution concentration usually results in a reduction in gel degradation. The research suggests there might be an ideal combination of polymer solution and NaCl concentration for achieving the greatest decrease in the degradation rate. For 2‐min sonication, as the salinity of the HPAM solution, with a concentration of up to 5000 ppm, increases, the accumulated energy remains relatively constant. However, when the polymer solution concentration is increased, the accumulated energy becomes more sensitive to changes in salinity. The results of this study provide valuable insight into the interplay between polymer solution concentration, salt concentration, and the energy required for gel degradation, which can be applied in various fields including the oil and gas industry, petroleum processing, and environmental remediation. Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stress factors that negatively affect plant growth and development. In contrast, fusaric acid (FA), a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium and Giberella fungal genera, has biological and metabolic effects in various plants. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the protective effect of externally applied FA (0.1 nM) against the damage caused by salt (0.15 M NaCl) stress in onion (Allium cepa L.) plant. Salt stress resulted in an increase in the chromosomal aberrations (CAs) and micronucleus (MN) frequency, a decrease in the mitotic index (MI), fresh weight, root number, germination percentage, and root length. It promoted CAs such as irregular mitosis, bilobulated nuclei, chromosome loss, bridge, unequal seperation of chromosome, vagrant chromosome and polar slip in root meristem cells. In addition, salt stress caused a enhancement in free proline (PR), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the roots of onion plant. Moreover, it revealed damage and changes that include the accumulation of some chemical substances such as proline and sugars in epidermis and cortex layer cells, epidermal cell injury, flattening of the cell nucleus, wall thickening in cortex cells, necrotic areas and indistinct transmission tissue in the anatomical structure of onion roots. On the other hand, FA application promoted bulb germination and mitotic activity, strengthened the antioxidant defense system, and reduced chromosome and anatomical structure damages. Introduction: Solanum chilense is a wild relative of tomato reported to exhibit resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. There is potential to improve tomato cultivars via breeding with wild relatives, a process greatly accelerated by suitable genomic and genetic resources. Methods: In this study we generated a high-quality, chromosome-level, de novo assembly for the S. chilense accession LA1972 using a hybrid assembly strategy with ~180 Gbp of Illumina short reads and ~50 Gbp long PacBio reads. Further scaffolding was performed using Bionano optical maps and 10x Chromium reads. Results: The resulting sequences were arranged into 12 pseudomolecules using Hi-C sequencing. This resulted in a 901 Mbp assembly, with a completeness of 95%, as determined by Benchmarking with Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCO). Sequencing of RNA from multiple tissues resulting in ~219 Gbp of reads was used to annotate the genome assembly with an RNA-Seq guided gene prediction, and for a de novo transcriptome assembly. This chromosome-level, high-quality reference genome for S. chilense accession LA1972 will support future breeding efforts for more sustainable tomato production. Discussion: Gene sequences related to drought and salt resistance were compared between S. chilense and S. lycopersicum to identify amino acid variations with high potential for functional impact. These variants were subsequently analysed in 84 resequenced tomato lines across 12 different related species to explore the variant distributions. We identified a set of 7 putative impactful amino acid variants some of which may also impact on fruit development for example the ethylene-responsive transcription factor WIN1 and ethylene-insensitive protein 2.
