ABSTRACT Artificial insemination success in swine is mainly associated with semen dose quality. Thus, this study compared quality control parameters in 11 Brazilian boar studs after applying audit services for 24 months (1,650 boars). An extensive checklist was applied in each audit, registering ‘compliance’ or ‘noncompliance’ for 75 items. Semen doses produced were analyzed as regards volume and sperm concentration, and microbiological analyses were conducted for semen and water samples collected at distinct production stages. On average, boar studs produced 112.9 semen doses per boar per month, and the odds of raw semen contamination increased when boars were inadequately housed and doses were collected under increased temperatures, with no anti-slip rubber mat or after a poor prepuce cleaning (p < 0.05). Collection from boars with locomotor problems and no regular change of reverse osmosis filters increased the contamination odds in semen doses produced and stored at the stud (p < 0.05). As regards the water submitted to the osmosis reverse process, contamination odds increased as a result of deficient cleaning and disinfection of the purification equipment (p < 0.05). Risk factors for reduced sperm motility (< 70 %) were: no anti-slip rubber mat for semen collection, no cleaning program for automatic feeding system (drops) and bins, and inadequate intervals between semen collections (≤ 2 days or > 7 days; p < 0.05). Two boar studs had the best results for compliance with the checklist items. Constant monitoring, appropriate hygiene of facilities and equipment, and periodical staff training are highlighted as non-negotiable points for boar semen dose quality.

ABSTRACT: Wood is an organic material and its energetic and physical properties are related to its chemical and anatomical constituents. This study evaluated the influence of the chemical constituents on the energetic and physical properties of Parapiptadeniarigida(Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorumdubium(Spreng.) Taub.,Eucalyptus grandisW. Hill × Eucalyptus urophyllaS.T. Blake (hybrid), and Schizolobiumparahyba(Vell.) Blake an agroforestry system. Five trees of each species aged 9 years were sampled. Samples were collected at a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 1.30 m above the ground and were used to analyze the chemical, energetic, and physical properties of the wood. Chemical properties influence the energetic and physical properties of wood. We reported that the higher the lignin content in the wood, the greater the correlation with the fixed carbon content (0.76) and gross calorific value (0.65). High values of fixed carbon content increased the basic density of the wood (0.80). In contrast, the lower the lignin content in the wood, the greater the correlation with the extractive content (-0.76) and volatile material content (-0.74), and the higher the volatile material content, the lower the fixed carbon content (-0.98) and gross calorific value (-0.74).

Salmonella enterica can be carried by pigs and can reach the final product and the consumer. Thus, Salmonella reduction strategies along the swine production chain should be studied. In this sense, the objective of the study was to evaluate a subunit vaccine based on secondary antigens administered orally against natural infection in swine farms in Brazil. A field trial study was conducted to estimate the effect of the vaccination on the Salmonella spp. seroprevalence, presence in lymph nodes, and fecal content in commercial pig herds in a vertical integration system belonging to an agroindustry. Furthermore, nMPN, qPCR, and phagocytic activity were performed. There were no significant differences in seroprevalence between groups. The mMPN count of Salmonella spp. in feces was higher in vaccinated group (VG), ranging from 0 to 2.46 log mMPN/g, while in control group (CG) it ranged from 0.0 to 4 log mMPN/g, showing a significant group effect (p

Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PPDS) is a common disorder affecting sows in intensive production systems. In most cases, hypogalactia is not clearly identified and assumes a subclinical aspect. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) based on tolfenamic acid as a prophylactic treatment for PPDS and the performance of suckling piglets. Gilts (n = 319) were randomly divided into two groups: a tolfenamic acid group (n = 157) and a control (n = 162). The tolfenamic acid group received a single intramuscular injection (1 ml/20 kg of 4% tolfenamic acid) after farrowing, whereas the control group received no treatment. The occurrence of PPDS was confirmed. All piglets (n = 4,466) were weighed at 1, 4, and 18 days of age. All litters were evaluated for weight gain, the occurrence of diarrhea, and mortality between 4 and 18 days of age. PPDS variables were analyzed using logistic regression. Piglet weights were analyzed based on covariance while considering the effects of initial weight and the presence of diarrhea. Tolfenamic acid had no significant effect on the incidence of PPDS. The tolfenamic acid group had a 0.41% lower piglet mortality rate until 18 days of age. Tolfenamic acid administered prophylactically to gilts after farrowing reduced piglet mortality during lactation and promoted weight gain.

ABSTRACT: The growing worldwide demand in the pulp market has fostered research that evaluates alternative fiber sources with specific characteristics that attend the needs of the consumer market, with a view to add value to the final product and reduce production costs. Acacia mearnsii De Wild wood is a by-product of the extraction of tannin from the trunk bark, used for firewood, charcoal and pellets. However, its wood is still poorly studied, especially its anatomical characteristics, which can provide important information about its industrial potential. This study evaluated the anatomical characteristics of Acacia mearnsii wood for the production of pulp and paper. Ten trees at approximately seven years old were cut down, five from the seed production area (SPA) and five from the clonal population area (CPA). From each tree, one trunk disc was sectioned at the diameter at breast height (DBH), resulting in 10 (ten) wood samples. From each disc, a sapwood specimen was made oriented in the tangential longitudinal, radial longitudinal and transversal planes, for later obtaining the anatomical cuts and the macerates. The anatomical description of the wood followed the recommendations of the International Association of Wood Anatomists-IAWA. From the dimensions of the fibers, their quality evaluation ratios for the production of pulp and paper were calculated. Results obtained from the anatomical characterization allowed to conclude that the Acacia mearnsii woods from SPA and CPA are indicated as a source of raw material for the pulp and paper production.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the reduction of Campylobacter jejuni in chicken meat at 6 and 70°C, after the inoculation of a Brazilian strain. The kinetics of C. jejuni survival showed a 0.26 log (CFU g-1) decrease for each day of exposure at 6°C, and a 1.35 log (CFU g-1) decrease for each 1 log increase at 70°C. Although reduced levels of C. jejuni were found after regular intervals at both temperatures, its incomplete inactivation underlines the need of good hygiene practices for consumers to avoid campylobacteriosis.

ABSTRACT: We performed a two-stage experiment: a preference and a validation test in swine litters, to determine whether suckling piglets preferred alternative light colors in their creep area over white light; we also determined whether the preferred color affected piglet behavior. In the first stage, five trials of two consecutive days were performed, each at 21-day intervals. In each trial, 40 piglets, from three to five days old, from four F1 sows (Large White x Landrace), were distributed in four treatments, in a paired scheme, receiving the following treatments: Treatment GR: white light vs. green light ; Treatment BL: white light vs. blue light; Treatment YE: yellow light vs. white light; Treatment RD: white light vs. red light. For the validation test, three consecutive lots of eight F1 sows (Large White x Landrace) and their corresponding maternity were used, remaining from birth under the influence of treatments T_Gr and T_Wh, totaling three replicates. T_Gr corresponded to four creep areaswith green LED light and T_Wh to four nurseries with white LED light. The piglets showed a significant preference only for white over blue. Among the alternative colors, piglets significantly preferred green. In the validation stage, there was no significant effect of colors on the mean percentage of permanence of the piglets inside the creep areas over all evaluated periods. Piglets between two and five days of age prefer green lighting;however,in the creep area, the light color used did not influence piglet behavior.

Resíduos orgânicos estão presentes em grande quantidade nas regiões Meio-Oeste e Oeste Catarinense. A piscicultura integrada pode atuar como auxiliadora no manejo ambiental desses resíduos desde que a integração não seja um fator de depreciação da qualidade dos recursos hídricos. O objetvo deste estudo foi monitorar os parâmetros de qualidade da água de viveiros manejados em sistema integrado piscicultura-suinocultura. As maiores frequências em desacordo com os padrões legais foram observadas para o oxigênio dissolvido e pH. No verão, as médias de sólidos totais dissolvidos (STD) e demanda química de oxigênio (DQO) foram maiores, e para todos os outros parâmetros as médias foram maiores no inverno. Os resultados permitram concluir que as águas dos viveiros apresentaram reduzido potencial de impacto aos recursos hídricos.

To achieve control of Salmonella contamination in pig carcasses, on-farm measures need to be better understood. Complementary strategies require research not only on their effectiveness but also on their financial impact. In this study, we evaluated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of two treatments for reducing Salmonella seroprevalence in commercial swine herds. Pigs treated with a prebiotic or a vaccine were studied and compared with pigs in an untreated control group. Each strategy was applied to three batches of pigs in a commercial integration system; the animals were followed from farrowing to the slaughterhouse, and their serologies upon arrival at finishing farms and before slaughter were evaluated. Additionally, carcass surface contamination was assessed for each strategy. The seroprevalence upon arrival at the finishing farm was lower than 3% in all groups. In the control and vaccine groups, the seroprevalence increased by more than 90 percentage points from the day of arrival at the finishing farm to four days before slaughter. Only the prebiotic treatment yielded a significant effect on preslaughter seroprevalence (a 49 percentage points reduction from that in the control). Carcass contamination was 0% in the prebiotic group, 18.33% in the control group and 29.16% in the vaccine group. Only prebiotics significantly reduced the seroprevalence of Salmonella in the studied herds, and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio associated with prebiotic use was 1.92 USD to reduce seroprevalence by 10 percentage points per carcass ton.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to contribute to the establishment of a baseline for the methane emission factor for the management of swine manure, considering the current practice of raw manure storage in two open deposits in parallel, in Southern Brazil. Methane (CH4) emissions were continuously measured in three PVC tanks of 3 m3, during 180 days, in the summer. As the content of volatile solids of pig slurry ran out in approximately 130 days, the CH4 emission factor was calculated as B0= 0.48 m3kg-1VS. Although this value is higher than the B0 estimated by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for Latin America (0.29 m3 kg-1 VS), it is in agreement with the B0 estimated for developed countries (0.45 and 0.48 m3 kg-1 VS, for the US and EU, respectively). The graphic of accumulated CH4-C emission x time fitted a sigmoidal, kinetic model (r2= 0.998) that showed a good correlation when tested with the emission data collected from a slurry deposit, under field conditions, in winter. This suggests that the model reproduces the CH4 emission kinetics in the region. By applying the reviewed state law rules (retention time of 50 instead of 120 days), estimates by the sigmoidal equation show that it is possible to reduce in more than 80% methane gas emission.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to recommend nitrogen doses from poultry litter-based organic fertilizers in powder and pellet forms, compared with mineral fertilizer, in a high-yield corn crop under no-tillage. The treatments consisted of a 3×3+1 factorial arrangement, with: three fertilizers, two organic derived from poultry litter in powder (OPo) and pelletized (OPe) forms and one mineral fertilizer (M); three N doses of 65, 100, and 135% of the recommended N requirement for corn; and an unfertilized control. After five corn crops farmed under no-tillage in a Rhodic Kandiudox, the recommended doses for fertilization with poultry litter organic fertilizers, with an expected yield equal to or greater than 8,000 kg ha-1, could be achieved from doses of 100 kg ha-1 N in OPe and M and of 121 kg ha-1 N in OPo. Increasing doses of the OPe, OPo, and M fertilizers raise the contents of organic carbon, N, and available P in the surface soil layer (0.0-0.1 m) and of exchangeable K up to a depth of 0.2 m, allowing to obtain N, P, and K contents in the plant tissue within the sufficiency range of the corn crop.

Maize and sorghum are the main raw materials in the production of silage for animal feed, with mineral fertilization being worthy of note when the goal is to increase gains in the amount and quality of the forage. This study aimed at evaluating the contribution of N, P or K doses to the dry matter and crude protein yield in maize and sorghum grown for silage. The experiments were carried out in a randomized block design, with four replications, during five successive crops of maize (three summer seasons) and sorghum (two off-season). Five doses of N (0 kg ha-1, 50 kg ha-1, 100 kg ha-1, 150 kg ha-1 and 200 kg ha-1), five doses of P2O5 (0 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1, 80 kg ha-1, 120 kg ha-1 and 160 kg ha-1) and five doses of K2O (0 kg ha-1, 30 kg ha-1, 60 kg ha-1, 90 kg ha-1 and 120 kg ha-1) were applied to each crop in the same experimental area. The N doses contributed to an increase in the crude protein yield in the five successive crops of maize and sorghum, together with an increase in dry matter and/or protein concentration. Crude protein increased 59.5-312.9 % for both crops. The soils used for the succession cropping system of maize and sorghum for silage had "very high" levels of P and K. Therefore, the P fertilization had no effect on the dry matter or crude protein yield in the first year of cultivation, similarly to the K fertilization during the five successive crop seasons.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate prediction equations, based on measurements obtained on the slaughter line, for carcass classification according to the degree of exudation and the content of marbling. A total of 747 pig carcasses originated from 27 producers were randomly selected on the slaughter line at two slaughterhouses, constituting representative samples from each one. Hot carcass weight, loin depth, back fat thickness, and pH and temperature 45 min after slaughter were used to generate the equations. The carcasses were classified as normal or exudative for drip loss of loin and ham, and as acceptable or undesirable for marbling content. For drip loss of loin and ham, respectively, the overall correct classification of the carcasses was 87.3 and 76.8%, using the discriminant functions, for both categories. For marbling, the overall correct classification was 67.2%, and only 69% of the carcasses were correctly classified as acceptable (marbling >1). The equations developed based on the measurements obtained on the slaughter line allow classifying swine carcasses with high accuracy, according to the degree of exudation, but not with the content of marbling.

Salmonella control programs require the classification of positive herds according with the prevalence of infected pigs. This must be based on diagnostic methods that are reliable, accurate and cost effective. Since serological methods fulfill most of these prerequisites, many countries have adopted indirect ELISA tests to discriminate herds, based on their seroprevalence. In view of that, an in-house indirect ELISA test (ELISA-Typhimurium) previously developed proved to be able to detect sera antibodies against the most prevalent serovars of Salmonella found in Brazilian pig farms. This study aimed to assess different cut-off values of the ELISA-Typhimurium in terms of their correlation with Salmonella isolation results at the herd level. Blood and mesenteric lymph node or rectal swabs were taken from 56 slaughter and 14 grower batches from different farms. Serum was tested using the ELISA-Typhimurium at different cut-off points (OD: 6.87%-40%). A total of 55 slaughter batches had at least one Salmonella-positive sample, and the within-herd prevalence was 64.9% (SE±24.8). All 14-grower batches were negative on Salmonella isolation. The logistic regression demonstrated that at 20% OD the ELISA-Typhimurium test is the best model to predict Salmonella isolation frequency at the herd level. At this cut-off point, the test may be a helpful tool for discriminating Salmonella infected herds.

The cassava leaf, waste generated in the harvest of the roots, is characterized by high content of protein, vitamins and minerals; however, its use is limited due to the high fiber content and antinutritional substances, which can be removed by obtaining protein concentrates. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate protein extraction processes, aiming the use of cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta Crantz) as an alternative protein. Four methods were tested: 1) Coagulation of Proteins by Lowering the Temperature, 2) Extraction by Isoelectric Precipitation, 3) Solubilization of Proteins and 4) Fermentation of Filter Leaf Juice. To obtain the concentrates, the use of fresh or dried leaves and extraction in one or two steps were also evaluated. The solubilization of proteins (method 3) showed a higher extraction yield; however, with concentrate of low quality. The fermentation of the juice (method 4) produced concentrates with higher quality and lower costs and the isoelectric precipitation (method 2) promoted the obtention of concentrates in less time, both with good prospects for use. The use of two extraction steps was not advantageous to the process and there was no difference between the use of fresh or dried leaf, and the use of fresh leaves is presented as a good option for the simplicity of the method.

ABSTRACT: Fertilization of apple orchards with phosphorus (P) has received less attention than with nitrogen and potassium. In Brazil, the information about apple response to soil P addition is meager. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect of annual soil P addition on quality and mineral composition of apple fruits. The experiment started in 2010, in a commercial orchard located in the São Joaquim, Southern of Brazil. The orchard consisted of ´Fuji Suprema’, planted in high-density on a Haplumbrept soil. Treatments consisted of 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160kg ha-1 P2O5 applied annually starting in 2010 broadcast over the soil surface along the tree row. Evaluations were performed from 2012/2013 through 2014/2015 growing seasons. We harvested three samples from each experimental unit. One sample was cold stored in a controlled atmosphere chamber for six months; the others were immediately evaluated for firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity (TA), skin color, and the concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the fruit flesh. Application of P to the soil affected only flesh firmness at harvest and TA after six months of storage in the 2012/2013 season, as well as firmness after six months of storage in the 2013/2014 season. In the 2014/2015 season, the addition of P reduced fruit color but only at harvest. Addition of P to the soil affected the levels of P in the fruit in the 2012/2013 season, as well as N and the N/Ca ratio of fruit in the 2014/2015 season. Overall, attributes related to fruit quality of cultivar Fuji Suprema were slightly affected by long-term annual addition of P to the soil.

O cultivo da erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) apresenta grande importância econômica na região Sul do Brasil. Contudo, a necessidade de fertilização no estabelecimento de plantios de erva-mate ainda é pouco conhecida. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a adubação sulfatada no crescimento inicial de dois clones de erva-mate em um Cambissolo Húmico. O experimento foi implantado em Itaiópolis – SC, testando quatro doses de enxofre (S) (0; 1,2; 2,4 e 3,6 kg de S-SO4 ha-1)em dois clones femininos de erva-mate (F1 e F2). Avaliou-se a massa verde e a exportação de nutrientes pelas folhas, galhos finos (≤ 7mm), galhos grossos (> 7mm) e erva-mate comercial (folhas + galhos finos) e massa total. O S-SO4 foi avaliado na camada de 0-20 cm do solo 24 meses após a aplicação dos tratamentos e plantio das mudas. A produtividade de galho fino e a massa total foram influenciadas pela dose de S, independentemente do clone, indicando a exigência do nutriente para aumentar o rendimento de massa verde. Ainda, o clone F2 apresentou maior produção de galho grosso em função da dose de S. Assim, sugere-se o teor mínimo de 10 mg dm-3 S-SO4 no solo para um adequado estabelecimento de clones de erva-mate.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as propriedades de polpas kraft marrons de madeiras de Eucalyptus grandise Eucalyptus urograndisde composição química distinta, principalmente em relação aos seus conteúdos de xilanas, para fabricação de papéis. As polpas marrons de número kappa 17-18 e conteúdos de xilanas variando de 6 a 21% foram produzidas sob diferentes protocolos de cozimento: 1) kraft convencional; 2) pré-hidrólise kraft; 3) kraft de alta alcalinidade; e 4) kraft de alto rendimento. As polpas marrons foram refinadas em moinho PFI e seus respectivos papéis produzidos foram avaliados quanto às suas propriedades físico-mecânicas e ópticas. De modo geral, as propriedades de resistência dos papéis foram beneficiadas pelo conteúdo de xilanas. Para níveis muito altos de refino, ocorreram quedas bruscas de resistência ao rasgo para os papéis e o consumo de energia de refino foi influenciado pelo conteúdo de xilanas nas polpas marrons. Os mais altos valores de volume específico aparente foram obtidos para os papéis com baixo conteúdo de xilanas, o que os torna interessantes, se branqueados, no segmento de papéis tissue. Os papéis com elevado conteúdo de xilanas apresentaram-se economicamente atrativos e com características de resistências adequadas para o segmento de papéis de imprimir e escrever.

This study aimed to assess five composter types in poultry carcasses decomposition and to perform a physicochemical analysis of the compounds obtained. Composter types used were six-hole brick, wood, screen, windrow with three PVC pipes with six holes and windrow with three PVC pipes with 10 holes. Composting was followed by four periods using wood shaving like substrate with one bird carcass placed in each composter. Pile turning was performed every 10 days and temperature in each layer was measured on 1st, 7th, 14th, 19th and 29th day, at 3 p.m., as well as room temperature. Temperature during pile turning was also measured at five points per layer and carcass weighing performed to calculate decomposition percentage. Physicochemical parameters evaluated in substrates were moisture, ash, phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, pH, organic carbon and C/N ratio, up to 30 days. Data were analyzed by repeated measures model, using MIXED method of SAS software. All values of final physicochemical composition of substrates were found according to values of IN-25, except nitrogen. The composter types were efficient in decomposition of poultry carcasses.

A cross-sectional study in four swine feed mills aimed to evaluate the correlation between the score of the inspection checklist defined in the Normative Instruction 4 (IN 4/ Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply), and the enumeration of total coliforms throughout the manufacturing process. The most of non-conformities was found in the physical structure of the feed mills. Feed mill B showed the lowest number of unconformities while units A and D had the largest number of nonconformities. In 38.53% (489/1269) of the samples the presence of total coliform was detected, however no significant difference in the bacterial counts was observed between sampling sites and feed mills. The logistic regression pointed higher odds ratio (OR) for total coliforms isolation at dosing (OR = 9.51, 95% CI: 4.43 to 20.41), grinding (OR = 7.10, 95% CI = 3.27 to 15.40) and residues (OR = 6.21, 95% CI: 3.88 to 9.95) In spite of having the second score in the checklist inspection, feed mill C presented the highest odds for total coliforms isolation (OR= 2,43, IC 95%: 1,68-3,53). The data indicate no association between the score of checklist and the presence of hygienic indicators in feed mills.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the morphometric and allometric relations of Iguaçu surubim (Steindachneridion melanodermatum) cultivated in net cages. One hundred and twenty specimens were cultivated at a density of 50 fish per square meter in three 6 m³ net cages. Fish were fed three times a day with commercial feed. Thirty fish were evaluated at 60, 120, 180, and 360 days of cultivation as to the variables: total body, head, clean trunk, viscera, skin, and fin weight; total, standard, and head length; and head and body height. The Iguaçu surubim shows later development of the clean trunk and early development of the other body parts.

A transmissão de Salmonella na cadeia produtiva de suínos é um problema de difícil controle. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito da administração oral de probiótico sobre a ocorrência de infecção e excreção fecal de Salmonella em suínos em fase de crescimento. Os tratamentos consistiram de ração basal sem aditivos (controle) ou adicionada de probiótico (10(7)ufc g-1 de células viáveis dos gêneros Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus e Saccharomyces). Foram alocados seis leitões de 50 dias em cada tratamento, com duas repetições por tratamento. Todos os animais foram inoculados com Salmonella Typhimurium (10(6)ufc mL-1) após 14 dias do alojamento. Semanalmente, foram coletadas amostras de sangue e fezes e no dia 35 pós-inoculação os animais foram sacrificados e necropsiados. Os animais de ambos os tratamentos foram infectados por Salmonella e soroconverteram. Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre os grupos nas médias de Salmonella, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus e coliformes totais nas fezes, porém a administração de probiótico resultou em menor frequência de isolamento de Salmonella a partir de fígado (P=0,04), linfonodos mesentéricos (P=0,04), pulmão (P=0,03) e baço (P=0,01). Conclui-se que os microrganismos probióticos testados não foram capazes de impedir a infecção ou a excreção fecal de Salmonella em suínos de crescimento, mas diminuíram o número de portadores em linfonodos mesentéricos.Control of Salmonella transmission has been a challenge for the pork production companies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral administration of probiotics on the occurrence of infection and fecal excretion of Salmonella in growers. The treatments consisted of basal diet without additives (control) or added of probiotic (10(7)cfu g-1 of viable cells of the genera Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces). Six 50 days-old pigs were allocated into each treatment, with two replicates per treatment. All animals were inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium (10(6)cfu mL-1) after 14 days of housing. Afterwards, blood and feces samples were taken weekly and on day 35 post-inoculation the animals were euthanized and necropsied. The animals in both treatment groups were infected by Salmonella and seroconverted. There was no difference (P>0.05) between groups in mean counts of Salmonella, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus and coliforms in the feces samples, but the probiotic administration resulted in a lower frequency of isolation of Salmonella from liver (P=0.04), mesenteric lymph nodes (P=0.04), lung (P=0.03) and spleen (P=0.01). It was concluded that the probiotic microorganisms tested in this study were not able to protect against the infection or to decrease the fecal excretion of Salmonella in growing pigs, but were able to decrease the number of carriers in the mesenteric lymph nodes.

This correlational study investigated the effects of the peripartum health disorders and your respective risk factors about the milk production, in the peak and to the 305 days in lactation. Holsteins cows (n = 522) of a commercial herd of the State of São Paulo, had your health and nutritional status accompanied since the beginning of the period pre-calving to the end of the lactation. Occurrence of diseases, score of body condition (at the dry off and calving), daily milk productions and milk compositions, were recorded. For statistical analysis of the data, the logistics regression and the analysis of multiple regression were used. The obtained results demonstrated that the diseases of the peripartum and your risk factors affected the milk production with different effects in function of the lactation numbers, demanding this way, larger care with the prophylactic measures to avoid the diseases, and to maximize the production of milk and the reproduction of the animals.Este estudo correlacional investigou os efeitos das ocorrências sanitárias do periparto e seus respectivos fatores de risco sobre a produção de leite, no pico e aos 305 dias em lactação. Vacas Holandesas (n = 522) de um rebanho comercial do Estado de São Paulo tiveram seu desempenho sanitário e nutricional acompanhados desde o início do período pré-parto até o final da lactação. A ocorrência de doenças, os escores de condição corporal (no pré-parto e parto), as produções de leite e as composições do leite foram registradas. Para análise estatística dos dados, foram utilizadas a regressão logística e a análise de regressão múltipla. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que as doenças do periparto e seus fatores de risco afetaram a produção de leite com efeitos diferentes em função do número de lactações, exigindo desta maneira maior cuidado com adoção de medidas profiláticas para se evitar as doenças e maximizar a produção de leite dos animais.

Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar a inclusão da farinha de resíduo da indústria de filetagem de peixes em rações orgânicas para tilápias do Nilo (O. niloticus) na fase de crescimento, sobre o desempenho zootécnico (ganho de peso, conversão alimentar e sobrevivência), características de carcaça (rendimento de carcaça, tronco limpo, filé, gordura visceral, e índice hepatossomático) e composição química (umidade, proteína bruta, matéria mineral e extrato etéreo) dos peixes. Utilizaram-se 440 tilápias com média inicial de 84,11 ± 11,56 g de peso e 16,7 ± 0,80 cm de comprimento distribuídas em 20 tanques de 8 m³, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Foram elaboradas cinco rações com níveis de 0; 4; 8; 12 e 16% de inclusão de farinha de resíduos com 28% de proteína digestível e 3.100 kcal kg-1 de energia digestível. Houve aumento linear nas médias de ganho de peso e redução linear na conversão alimentar com a inclusão da farinha. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas (P > 0,05) nos parametros de rendimento corporal, na umidade e proteína bruta dos filés, porém, a matéria mineral e o extrato etéreo apresentaram diferenças (P < 0,05) entre os tratamentos. A inclusão de 16% de farinha de resíduos da filetagem de peixes em rações formuladas com ingredientes certificados de origem orgânica melhora o desempenho zootécnico, não compromete o rendimento corporal, porém, altera os parâmetros de matéria mineral e extrato etéreo da tilápia na fase de crescimento.This work was carried out to evaluate the inclusion of fish by-product from the filleting industry in organic food for Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) in the phase of growth, on livestock performance (weight gain, food conversion and survival), characteristics of carcass (carcass yield, clear trunk, fillet, visceral fat and hepatosomatic index) and chemical composition (humidity, gross protein, mineral matter and ethereal extract) of fish. A total of 440 tilapias with 84.11 ± 11.56 g average initial weight and 16.7 ± 0.80 cm in length, assigned into 20 8m³-aquaria, in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications. Four diets were prepared with levels of 0; 4; 8; 12 and 16% of fish by-product meal, with 28% in digestible protein and 3,100 kcal kg-1 in digestible energy. There was a linear increase in the average of weight gain. However, no differences were observed (P < 0.05) for food conversion and survival. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de dieta, com inclusão de um núcleo energético-proteico (NEP) de alta digestibilidade, no desempenho produtivo e características de carcaça de frangos de corte. O NEP constituiu-se de composto de óleo degomado de soja, milho pré-gelatinizado, soja biprocessada, mananoligossacarídeos e peptídeos. O total de 864 pintainhos machos, da linhagem AgRoss 508, com um dia de idade, foram pesados individualmente e distribuídos em blocos ao acaso. Os tratamentos consistiram de suplementos com diferentes teores de NEP, com oito repetições com 27 aves cada: T1, controle, 0% de NEP; T2, 7% de NEP (1-7 dias) e 3,5% de NEP (8-21 dias); T3, 14% de NEP (1-7 dias) e 7% de NEP (8-21 dias); e T4, 21% de NEP (1-7 dias) e 10,5% de NEP (8-21 dias). Aos 21 dias de idade, o peso corporal, ganho de peso, consumo médio de ração, conversão alimentar e rendimento de carcaça e cortes não foram afetados significativamente pelos tratamentos experimentais. A utilização de NEP na dieta de frangos de corte não altera o desempenho das aves e não interfere nas variáveis de características de carcaça.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the diet, with the inclusion of an energetic-protein nucleus (EPN) composed of highly digestible ingredients, on the productive performance and carcass traits of broiler chicks. The nucleus was composed by degummed soybean oil, pre-gelatinized corn, twice-processed soybean, mannanoligosaccharides and peptides. The total of 864 male AgRoss 508 broiler, with one day of age, were weighed individually and distributed in a randomized block design. Treatments consisted of: T1, control, 0% EPN; T2, 7% EPN (1-7 days) and 3.5% EPN (8-21 days); T3, 14% EPN (1-7 days) and 7% EPN (8-21 days); and T4, 21% EPN (1-7 days) and 10.5% EPN (8-21 days of age). At 21 days of age, body weight, weight gain, average feed intake, feed conversion and carcass and cut-ups yield were not significantly affected by treatments. The EPN inclusion in the diets did not influence the performance, carcass traits and cut-ups of broilers.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do genótipo e de teores de aminoácidos na dieta sobre o desempenho de suínos, o retorno econômico e a qualidade da carcaça e da carne. Os genótipos avaliados foram: MS115 x F1; Duroc x F1 (DCxF1); MS115 x Moura (MS115xMO); Duroc x 25% Duroc, 50% Large White, 25% Moura (DCxMO3). Os teores de aminoácidos nas dietas foram os recomendados para o desempenho alto ou médio de machos castrados com alto potencial genético. O escore de marmoreio foi mais elevado nos animais alimentados com teores médios de aminoácidos. Os genótipos DCxF1 e DCxMO3 tiveram maior ganho de peso diário do que MS115xF1 e MS115xMO. O menor ganho de peso, ajustado pelo consumo de ração, ocorreu no genótipo MS115xMO. As maiores espessuras de toucinho foram observadas nos animais MS115xMO e nos machos DCxMO3. O maior escore de marmoreio ocorreu nos animais MS115xMO, e o menor nos MS115xF1. Em comparação aos genótipos selecionados quanto à produção de carne, a raça Moura influenciou negativamente o desempenho e a qualidade da carcaça e positivamente a qualidade da carne, de acordo com sua proporção nos genótipos. A raça Duroc influenciou positivamente a qualidade da carne nos cruzamentos. A redução dos teores de aminoácidos nas dietas proporciona aumento do marmoreio, independentemente do genótipo.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of genotype and amino acid levels on swine performance, economic returns, and carcass and meat quality. The evaluated genotypes were: MS115 x F1; Duroc x F1 (DCxF1); MS115 x Moura (MS115xMO); Duroc x 25% Duroc, 50% Large White, 25% Moura (DCxMO3). Diet amino acids contents were those recommended for high or medium performance of barrows with high genetic potential. Marbling score was higher in animals fed the lowest level of amino acids. The genotypes DCxF1 and DCxMO3 had higher daily weight gains than MS115xF1 and MS115xMO. The lowest weight gain, adjusted by feed intake, occurred in the genotype MS115xMO. The highest backfat thickness were observed in MS115xMO animals and DCxMO3 males. The highest marbling score occurred in MS115xMO animals and the lowest in MS115xF1 ones. In comparison to the genotypes selected for meat production, Moura breed affected the performance and carcass quality negatively, and affected the meat quality positively, depending on this breed proportion in the genotypes. Duroc breed affected meat quality positively in the genotypes. Diet-reduced amino acid contents increased marbling, regardless of the genotype.

A determinação de produtos eficazes para a desinfecção e que não causem danos ao meio ambiente é um grande desafio para a avicultura orgânica. Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as atividades antibacterianas de quatro desinfetantes: ácido peracético, amônia quaternária, hipoclorito de sódio a 1% e a 0,1% de cloro ativo e do composto de ácidos orgânicos (cítrico, lático e ascórbico), frente às amostras padrão de Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis e Staphylococcus aureus, na presença e ausência de matéria orgânica, sob duas diferentes temperaturas e tempo de contato de 20 minutos. Os ácidos orgânicos mostraram-se menos efetivos na presença de matéria orgânica. No entanto, o ácido peracético, na ausência desta, foi o mais eficaz frente à S. Enteritidis e igualmente efetivo, independente da matéria orgânica, frente ao S. aureus e E. coli, revelando-se uma opção válida para desinfecção na avicultura orgânica, desde que precedida de limpeza criteriosa.Efficient products in the disinfection that do not cause damages to the environment are a challenge for the organic poultry keeping. The antibacterial activity of four disinfectants was evaluated to per acetic acid, quaternary ammonium, sodium hypochlorite at 1% and 0,1% and the composed of organics acids (citric, lactic and ascorbic) against standard samples of Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence and absence of organic matter, at two different temperatures and with 20 minutes of contact. Organic acids were shown less effective in the presence of organic matter. However, the per acetic acid in the absence of this revealed most efficient against S. Enteritidis and equally effective in the presence of organic matter, against S. aureus and E. coli showing a valid option for disinfection in the organic poultry keeping since preceded of careful cleanness.

O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do período de descanso (3, 5, 7 e 9 horas) dos suínos no frigorífico (PDF) e da localização dos suínos na carroceria do caminhão (PBO), quando transportados, no inverno ou verão, sobre alguns parâmetros fisiológicos avaliados em 64 fêmeas, com peso médio de 130kg para abate, durante o manejo pré-abate. Para a análise estatística, foram considerados, no modelo de análise da variância, os efeitos de bloco, PDF, PBO e da interação (bloco x PDF), entre outros. O PDF influenciou, significativamente, as concentrações de lactato no sangue e cortisol na saliva. Suínos que descansaram 5 e 7 horas apresentaram maior concentração de lactato em relação aos animais que descansaram 3 e 9 horas. No transporte, a freqüência cardíaca foi muito maior em relação aos demais locais avaliados. Concluiu-se que o incremento do PDF não promove mudanças na freqüência cardíaca, nas concentrações de glicose e CPK no sangue e cortisol na saliva, mas interfere na concentração de lactato no sangue dos suínos.The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of pig lairage time (PDF=3, 5, 7 and 9 hours) and evaluate the effect of pig position into the truck (PBO) during transportation to slaughterhouse, in winter or summer conditions, on some physiologic parameters evaluated on 64 heavyweight females with mean liveweight of 130kg during pre-slaughter events. The following effects were considered in the statistical analysis of variance model: block (BL=summer farm or winter farm), PDF, PBO and interaction (Block x PDF), under other factors. The PDF influenced significativelly blood lactate and saliva cortisol levels. Pig submitted to 5 and 7 hours of lairage had higher levels of lactate when compared to pigs submitted to 3 and 9 hours of lairage. During transport the heart rate were higher than in other pre-slaughter events. It is concluded that increasing PDF above 3 hours had no effects on heart frequency, glucose and CPK levels and salivary cortisol levels but affects the blood lactate levels.

A utilização de métodos moleculares baseados em PCR é fundamental na detecção do Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, sendo capaz de identificar a infecção antes do estabelecimento da doença no rebanho. Estes métodos apresentam maior sensibilidade quando comparados com métodos tradicionais de isolamento bacteriano, mas podem sofrer influência de substâncias que reduzem a especificidade do teste e proporcionam o aparecimento de amplificações inespecíficas. No intuito de reduzir as amplificações inespecíficas, observadas quando aplicada a PCR para o gene cpx em amostras de tecido tonsilar, procedeu-se a otimização da técnica, na qual foram analisados o efeito do pré-cultivo bacteriano e as diferentes temperaturas de anelamento dos iniciadores e foi introduzido, no protocolo, um anticorpo que se liga na enzima Taq DNA Polimerase, aumentando a especificidade do teste. Paralelamente, foi realizado um experimento para verificar o efeito inibidor do tecido tonsilar sobre os resultados da PCR. Para isso, porções de tonsila de animais negativos para A. pleuropneumoniae foram contaminadas artificialmente com a amostra referência do sorotipo 5B. A adição do anticorpo para a enzima Taq DNA Polimerase e o aumento da temperatura de anelamento dos iniciadores para 57°C diminuiu o aparecimento de amplificações inespecíficas. Os resultados obtidos no experimento demonstraram que o tecido tonsilar possui efeito inibidor nas amplificações da PCR. Além disso, a amplificação depende de, no mínimo, 675 UFC presentes na alíquota da amostra usada na PCR (equivalente a 1,35 x 10(5) UFC mL-1), assim, amostras de fragmentos de tecido de infecções iniciais e/ou com poucas células podem apresentar resultados falsos negativos.The use of molecular methods based on PCR is important in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae detection, being able to identify the infection before the establishment of the disease in the herd. These methods have larger sensitivity when compared with traditional methods of bacteriological isolation, but they can suffer influence of substances that reduce the specificity of the test and resulting in inespecific amplifications. In order to reduce inespecific amplifications, observed when applied the PCR technique for the gene cpx in tonsil's tissue samples, the optimization was performed, in which different annealing temperatures were analyzed and introduced, in the technique, an antibody that binds to the enzyme Taq DNA Polimerase, increasing its specificity. In parallel, an experiment was performed in order to verify the inhibiting effect of the tonsil's tissue on the PCR results. For that, portions of tonsil from animals negative to the A. pleuropneumoniae were artificially contaminated with the reference sample of the sorotype 5B. The addition antibody for the enzyme Taq DNA Polimerase and the increase of the primers anneling temperature to 57°C reduced the inespecific amplifications. The results obtained in the experiment demonstrated a possible inhibiting effect of the tonsil's tissue in the PCR amplifications. Besides, amplifications depend on at least 675 UFC present in the aliquot of samples that will be used in PCR (equivalent to 1.35 x 10(5) UFC mL-1), therefore, samples tissue's fragments in initial infections and/or with few cells can result in false-negative.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o tempo de jejum na granja e a posição dos animais na carroceria do caminhão durante o transporte ao abatedouro sobre o status hormonal e fisiológico de suínos de abate pesados visando obter melhorias no manejo pré-abate e reduzir perdas na qualidade de carne. Foram utilizadas 64 fêmeas com peso médio de 133+11kg, oriundas de duas granjas de terminação. Os tempos de jejum avaliados foram nove, 12, 15 e 18h, enquanto que as posições consideradas na carroceria foram box (frente, meio e atrás), piso (inferior e superior) e lado (lateral direita e esquerda). Ao abate, foram medidos os níveis de glicose, lactato e CPK no sangue. A concentração de cortisol na saliva (CCS) foi medida nas granjas (24 horas antes e após embarque) e no abatedouro (logo após o descarregamento e antes do abate). A freqüência cardíaca foi monitorada durante todo o manejo pré-abate. Foi observado o efeito da interação entre TJG e o local de avaliação sobre a CCS e a freqüência cardíaca. A CCS e a freqüência cardíaca aumentaram significativamente da granja ao desembarque no abatedouro em relação ao descanso pré-abate no abatedouro foi observada uma redução (P0,05) os níveis de glicose, lactato e CPK no abate dos suínos.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fasting time on the farm (TJG) and the position of the animals on truck compartment during transport to slaughterhouse in the hormonal and physiological status of heavy-weight swine in order to obtain future management improvements and to reduce meat quality downgrades. Sixty-four females obtained from two farms and averaging 133+11kg body weight were used. Fasting time evaluated on farms were 9, 12, 15 and 18 h while the positions considered in the truck were Box (front, middle, and back), Deck (under and upper level) e Side (right and left). Swine blood concentration of glucose, lactate and CPK were evaluated at slaughter. Cortisol concentration on saliva (CCS) was evaluated on the farm (24 hours before uploading and after loading) and at slaughterhouse (after downloading and before slaughter). Hearth frequency was continuously evaluated during pre-slaughter management. Interaction between TJG and moment of salivary cortisol sampling and heart rate data recording were observed. CCS and heart rate values increased from farm to truck downloading at slaughterhouse, while pre-slaughter resting reduced (P0.05) on glucose, lactate and CPK levels at slaughter time.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do sistema de alojamento sobre o desempenho zootécnico, as características da carcaça, a qualidade da carne e a condição sanitária de suínos criados em seis diferentes sistemas. Foram usados 803 suínos mestiços MS58 x (Landrace x Large White) em sete lotes seqüenciais no tempo, avaliando as fases de creche e de crescimento-terminação. Na creche, foram avaliados três tipos de alojamento: confinado convencional (CO); cama sobreposta-(CS); e sistema intensivo de suínos criados ao ar livre (SISCAL). No crescimento-terminação, foram avaliados apenas dois tipos de alojamento (CO e CS), sendo o último subdividido em três substratos (palha de trigo-PT, casca de arroz-CA e serragem-SE). Para a análise estatística foi considerado no modelo os efeitos de lote, o tratamento (combinação de tipos de alojamento na creche e no crescimento-terminação), idade dos suínos (84, 105, 126, 147 e 160 dias) e a interação tratamento x idade. A pleuropneumonia suína é uma das mais importantes doenças respiratórias dos suínos, estando presente em todos os países produtores. Para o controle e o monitoramento da pleuropneumonia, é necessário o desenvolvimento de métodos rápidos e acurados de diagnóstico. Com o objetivo de validar a técnica da PCR, baseada no gene cpx de Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, em suínos sabidamente positivos, primeiramente foi realizada inoculação experimental com amostras de A. pleuropneumoniae sorotipo 5B e coletadas amostras por meio de suabe de tonsila, biópsia de tonsila e sangue para realização da técnica de PCR, isolamento bacteriológico e teste de ELISA, respectivamente. Posteriormente, estas técnicas foram aplicadas em suínos naturalmente infectados, em três rebanhos com diferentes situações sanitárias quanto à apresentação clínica da doença. De cada rebanho, foram analisados cinco grupos de suínos com idades diferentes, sendo coletado de cada animal biópsia de tonsila para isolamento bacteriológico e PCR e sangue para determinação do perfil sorológico. Os resultados obtidos na inoculação experimental confirmaram que, mesmo com o estabelecimento da infecção comprovada pelo isolamento bacteriológico, após o período de 45 dias, não foi possível detectar o agente pela técnica de PCR. Em animais naturalmente infectados, a técnica de PCR apresentou maior sensibilidade quando comparado com o isolamento. A associação entre PCR e ELISA demonstrou ser uma boa alternativa para definir a situação sanitária do rebanho quanto à infecção por A. pleuropneumoniae.Swine pleuropneumonia is one of the most important pig respiratory diseases and has been found in all producer countries. For control and monitoring of pleuropneumonia, it is necessary the development of fast and specific methods of diagnosis. To validate PCR based on the cpx gene of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in positive pigs, an experimental infection with A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 5B was performed and samples were obtained by tonsil swab, tonsil biopsy and blood for PCR, bacterial isolation and ELISA, respectively. These tests were then performed in naturally infected pigs from three herds with different sanitary situations of clinical disease. In each herd, five groups of different ages were analyzed. Tonsil biopsy for bacterial isolation and PCR and blood to determine the herd serological status was collected. The results obtained in the experimental infection confirmed that, even with the infection establishment, proved with bacterial isolation, it was not possible to detect the agent by PCR 45 days after infection. In naturally infected animals, PCR was more sensitive than bacterial isolation. The association between PCR and ELISA is a good alternative to define the herd sanitary status regarding the infection with A. pleuropneumoniae.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of artificial rations with different proteics pâtés incorporated in the black bass (Micropterus salmoides) fingerlings diet. 320 fingerlings, with initial average weight of 0,57±0,1g and lenght of 3,61±0,21cm, respectively were used. The fish were distributed in an entirely casualized delineation in 32 polypropylene boxes of 310 liters, with 4 treatments and 8 repetitions. One reference ration (RR) with 38% PB as diet base was used, being added to each treatment proteics pâtés (PP), composites of bovine heart (CB), eviscerate sardine (SE), Chilean fish flour (FP) and tilapia fillet (FT). During the alimentary training good acceptance of the artificial diets was observed, with better performance results for the treatments with FP and FT.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a utilização de rações artificiais com diferentes patês protéicos incorporados na dieta de alevinos de black bass (Micropterus salmoides). Durante o treinamento alimentar foi observado boa aceitação as dietas artificiais, com melhores resultados de desempenho para os tratamentos com FP e FT.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the production of biomass of the aquatic macrophytes water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and egeria (Egeria densa) in three hydraulic detention times in a organic pisciculture effluent treatment system. The system was composed for 18 experimental tanks of 2.00 x 1.00 x 0.65m length, width and depth respectively, coated with polypropylene canvas. An entirely randomized 2 macrophytes x 3 hydraulic detention times (HDT) and 3 repetitions. The HDT used was 4, 8, and 12 hours. The biomass production was evaluated at the end of the experiment which was extended at 08/07 to 19/08/2006. The water hyacinth showed the best results of biomass production (P0.05). For egeria the treatment that presented the best production of biomass was reached which TDH of 12 hours, being of 0.10 kg.m-2, followed for the HDT of 8 and 4 hours, not differing between the HDT (P>0.05). One concludes that the water hyacinth produced higher biomass than egeria in all of the HDT evaluated.O presente trabalho teve por o objetivo avaliar a produção de biomassa das macrófitas aquáticas aguapé (Eichhornia crassipes) e egeria (Egeria densa) em um sistema de tratamento de efluente de piscicultura orgânica, sob 3 condições de tempo de detenção hidráulica. O sistema foi composto por 18 tanques experimentais de 2,00 x 1,00 x 0,65 m de comprimento, largura e profundidade, respectivamente, revestidos com lona de polipropileno. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com 2 macrófitas, 3 tempos de detenção hidráulica (TDH) e 3 repetições. Os TDH utilizados foram de 4, 8 e 12 horas. O sistema foi operado de 08/07 a 19/08/2006. A produção de biomassa foi avaliada ao final do experimento. O aguapé apresentou os melhores resultados de produção de biomassa (P0,05). Para a egeria o tratamento que apresentou a melhor produção de biomassa foi no TDH de 12 horas, sendo de 0,10 kg.m- 2, seguido pelos TDH de 8 e 4 horas, não diferindo entre os TDH (P>0,05). Concluiu-se que o aguapé produziu mais biomassa que a egeria em todos os TDH avaliados.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos do tempo de jejum (9, 12, 15 e 18 horas) dos animais na granja (TJG) e da posição na carroceria do caminhão (PBO) durante o transporte da granja ao frigorífico sobre: a perda de peso corporal (PPC), o peso do estômago cheio (PEC) e vazio (PEV), o peso do conteúdo estomacal (PCE) e o escore de lesão na mucosa esofágica-gástrica (ELG). Foram utilizadas 192 fêmeas, com peso vivo médio de 134,51±11,80kg. No modelo, foram considerados os efeitos de bloco (estação do ano, BL), TJG, PBO e da interação entre BL x TJG. Verificou-se efeito significativo do TJG apenas sobre o peso do conteúdo estomacal. Não se observou efeito significativo da PBO sobre qualquer das variáveis avaliadas. Dos suínos avaliados, 90,3% apresentaram PEC menor que 500 gramas e 8,56% com PEC entre 500 e 800 gramas. A prevalência de suíno com ELG foi baixa (14,97%), sendo que, dos animais com ELG, 13,90% apresentaram lesão de grau 1 e 1,09% eram grau dois. Conclui-se que animais submetidos a jejum na granja de 15 horas apresentam menor peso do conteúdo estomacal ao abate.The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of fasting time period (9, 12, 15 and 18 hours) at the farm (TJG) and the pig’s position in the lorry’s livestock compartment (PBO) during the transport from the farm to the processing plant on: body weight loss (PPC), weight of stomach (full= PEC and empty= PEV), weight of stomach contents (PCE), and incidence of gastric ulcer (ELG). A total of 192 females with average 34.51±11.80kg of body weigh were used. The statistical model considered the effects of: block (season, BL), TJG, PBO and the interaction between BL and TJG. There was a significant effect of TJG only on stomach content. There was no effect of PBO on any of the evaluated variables. A PEC inferior to 500g was observed in 90.3% of the animals, while 8.56% of the pigs presented PEC between 500 and 800g. Incidence of ELG was low (14.97%), and among the ELG animals, 13.90% showed grade 1 lesion, and 1.09% grade two lesion. As a conclusion, pigs submitted to a fasting period of 15 hours have less stomach contents at the processing.

The international restructuring process in the beverage sector reached the winemaking business in the 1990s, changing its panorama. Increasing competitive pressure is a characteristic of this period with significant impact in regions such as the countries belonging to the Mercosul block. To support firm strategies and public policies, the goal of this study was to identify the competition segments in winemaking in Rio Grande do Sul, the southern state of Brazil, and in a specific form to propose a typology of wineries based on the Industrial Organization literature. The data used are from the State Wineries Data Bank of Rio Grande do Sul, which were submitted to multivariate statistical analysis, integrating a cluster and principal components analysis in a group of 381 observations. The results showed the existence of two factors, one related to scale and diversification, and the other related to the quality of the products and of the raw material. From these factors, six groups of wineries were identified that can be named segments of competition in winemaking. Group 1 is characterized by quality and specialization; group 2, by a large production scale and diversification; group 3, by a low added value; group 4, by a micro production scale; and groups 5 and 6, by a low added value, small scale, and specialization.O processo de reestruturação internacional no setor de bebidas atingiu a vitivinicultura na década de 1990, alterando o seu panorama. Característico a esse período é o aumento da pressão competitiva, com impactos significativos em regiões como a dos países membros do Mercosul. Para apoiar as estratégias empresariais e as políticas públicas, o objetivo deste estudo foi identificar os segmentos de concorrência da vitivinicultura do Rio Grande do Sul e, de forma específica, propor uma tipologia das vinícolas gaúchas com base na literatura da Organização Industrial. Utilizaram-se os dados do Cadastro Vinícola do Rio Grande do Sul os quais foram submetidos à análise estatística multivariada, integrando análises de agrupamento e de componentes principais em um conjunto de 381 observações. Os resultados apontaram para a existência de dois fatores, um relacionado à escala e diversificação e o outro à qualidade dos produtos e da matéria-prima. A partir desses fatores, foram identificados seis grupos de vinícolas que podem ser denominados de segmentos de concorrência na vitivinicultura gaúcha. O grupo 1 se caracteriza pela qualidade e especialização; o 2, pela grande escala de produção e diversificação; o 3, pelo baixo valor agregado; o 4, pela micro escala de produção; e os grupos 5 e 6, pelo baixo valor agregado, pequena escala e especialização.

A fisális (Physalis peruviana) é uma planta exótica pertencente à família das solanáceas. Seu cultivo ainda é pouco explorado no Brasil, mas é uma nova opção de diversificação para a agricultura familiar. A planta pode chegar até dois metros de altura, adotando-se sistema de condução e práticas de poda. O objetivo foi avaliar o crescimento vegetativo das plantas e o potencial produtivo da cultura da fisális no Planalto Sul Catarinense em diferentes sistemas de condução e espaçamentos. Foram testados quatro sistemas de condução (livre, espaldeira, “X” e “V”), dois espaçamentos (3,00 x 0,50 m e 3,00 x 1,00 m, entre filas e plantas, respectivamente) e 11 períodos de avaliação durante as safras de 2008/09 e 2009/10. As plantas de fisális apresentaram comprimento médio dos ramos principais de 2,48 m de altura e diâmetro médio de 15,25 mm. Plantas de fisális conduzidas no sistema “V”, sob o espaçamento 3,00 x 1,00 m, apresentaram maior diâmetro médio dos ramos principais. Plantas conduzidas nos sistemas livre, espaldeira e “X”, com espaçamentos mais adensados (3,00 x 0,50 m), proporcionaram maior produtividade de fisális nas condições edafo-climáticas do Planalto Sul Catarinense.

O manejo pré-abate dos suínos, quando realizado de maneira inadequada, pode proporcionar perdas qualitativas e quantitativas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do período de descanso dos suínos no frigorífico (PDF) (3, 5, 7 e 9 horas) e da posição do box na carroceria do caminhão (PBO) sobre a perda de peso corporal (PPC), o peso do estômago cheio (PEC) e vazio (PEV), o peso do conteúdo estomacal (PCE) e o escore de lesão na mucosa esofágica-gástrica (ELG). Foram utilizadas 192 fêmeas, com peso vivo médio de 130,0±9,9kg. Para a análise estatística, considerou-se no modelo os efeitos de bloco (BL), relativo à estação do ano e à granja avaliada o PDF, PBO e a interação entre PDF x BL. Não houve efeito significativo do PDF nas variáveis estudadas. Verificou-se efeito significativo da PBO somente sobre a perda de peso corporal dos suínos, sendo que animais transportados na parte da frente perderam mais peso em relação aos transportados nos boxes do meio e de trás. Observou-se que somente 11% dos suínos apresentaram ELG característico de úlcera gástrica e que uma elevada porcentagem de suínos (41,9%) apresentou ELG grau 1, caracterizando paraqueratose. Conclui-se que suínos transportados em boxes localizados na parte frontal da carroceria do caminhão apresentam maior perda de peso corporal do que os demais e que a variação de 3 a 9 horas no período de descanso no frigorífico não afeta a perda de peso corporal nem as características do estômago dos animais.

No atual sistema internacional de pagamento do leite por qualidade, têm-se valorizado dois aspectos fundamentais: a contagem de células somáticas (CCS) e o conteúdo de sólidos totais. O primeiro fator depende da saúde da glândula mamária e o segundo, de maior importância econômica para os laticínios, está relacionado com o manejo alimentar e a raça dos animais. O ambiente ruminal pode modificar a composição do leite, em especial o teor de gordura. A fonte principal de proteína nos ruminantes depende da síntese de proteína no rúmen. Os atuais sistemas de alimentação, usados em vacas de alta produção, predispõem os animais à apresentação de síndromes metabólicas o que direta ou indiretamente afeta a produção de leite. Objetivou-se, com o presente trabalho, relacionar indicadores do ambiente ruminal (tempo de redução com azul de metileno e pH) e o pH da urina com a composição do leite (sólidos totais) e a CCS. Não foi encontrada associação estatística entre os parâmetros avaliados. Os valores médios dos sólidos não-gordurosos analisados no estudo foram inferiores ao limite estabelecido pela norma oficial do Brasil.

Um estudo transversal foi utilizado para identificar fatores associados à prevalência de suínos sorologicamente positivos para Salmonella nos estados de Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul. Sessenta e cinco granjas foram visitadas uma semana antes do abate dos animais para aplicação de questionário e coletas de ração, água e sangue. A ração foi submetida à pesquisa de Salmonella por isolamento e PCR. Foram testados soros de aproximadamente 40 leitões de cada propriedade utilizando ELISA com antígeno do sorovar Typhimurium. Após a análise de distribuição da prevalência, as granjas foram classificadas em três categorias, baixa (até 40%), média (40-70%) e alta (mais de 70%). Estas categorias constituíram a variável explicada e a pesquisa de Salmonella na ração, colimetria da água e as respostas do questionário, as variáveis explicativas. Inicialmente, a associação entre as variáveis explicativas e a explicada foi estudada pelo teste de c2. As variáveis associadas (P£0,1) foram submetidas à análise fatorial de correspondência múltipla, com a qual foi possível identificar a associação da maior soroprevalência com o seguinte conjunto de variáveis: nas granjas terminadoras, uso de ração peletizada, distribuição de dejetos a menos de 100m do local de captação de água, não utilização de comedouro do modelo comedouro/bebedouro, transporte com freteiro misturando animais de várias granjas; nas granjas de ciclo completo, ingredientes de ração desprotegidos de outros animais, ausência de controle de roedores, ração seca, ausência de cerca, não uso da pintura com cal após lavagem e desinfecção e a entrada de outras pessoas, além do técnico, na granja. Das 65 granjas visitadas, 98,5% foram ELISA positivas com soroprevalência 57,6% (intervalo de confiança entre 56-60%).

A mastite bovina pode ser clínica, com sinais visíveis, e subclínica, diagnosticada pela contagem das células somáticas. As perdas econômicas causadas pela mastite subclínica devem ser quantificadas para atender à demanda nacional de produtos lácteos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se as perdas na produção de leite, pelo aumento do número de células somáticas, são proporcionais ou independentes do nível de produção. Foram utilizadas 7.756 observações, colhidas mensalmente de um único rebanho, de setembro de 2000 a junho de 2002. A curva de lactação foi modelada pela função gama incompleta, e os efeitos de ordem de lactação, época do parto, ocorrência de doenças no periparto e escore de condição corporal ao parto também foram considerados. A contagem de células somáticas foi incluída nesse modelo como fator multiplicativo, representando perdas relativas, e como fator aditivo, representando perdas absolutas. A escolha do melhor modelo foi baseada no critério de informação de Schwarz (BIC). As perdas são absolutas, evidentes a partir de 14.270 células/mL e para cada aumento de uma unidade na escala do logaritmo natural a partir desse valor, estimam-se perdas de 184 e 869 g/dia para vacas primíparas e multíparas, respectivamente.

O trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de testar diferentes fontes protéicas em dietas práticas para alevinos de jundiá (Rhamdia quelen). Foram realizados dois experimentos com duração individual de 42 dias utilizando-se 320 animais com peso médio inicial de 1,18 ± 0,28 gramas e 4,00 ± 0,18 gramas, respectivamente, distribuídos em 16 unidades experimentais de um sistema com recirculação de água, testando-se quatro dietas com quatro repetições em cada experimento. No primeiro experimento, testaram-se quatro dietas isoprotéicas (34% proteína bruta) e isocalóricas (3.500 Kca /kg de energia digestível) sendo que a dieta A1 continha levedura de cana, farelo de soja e farinha de carne e ossos, e nas demais (A2, A3 e A4) suprimiu-se uma das fontes. Estudou-se a ocorrência de linfadenite granulomatosa causada por agentes do Complexo Mycobacterium avium (MAC), e outras patologias, de suínos criados em cama sobreposta com dois substratos. Utilizaramse 72 leitões/tratamento/lote em quatro lotes consecutivos distribuídos em três tratamentos: T1 maravalha, T2 casca de arroz e T3 piso de alvenaria semi-ripado. No primeiro lote 2 leitões/baia nos três tratamentos foram desafiados com suspensão de 2mg de MAC no primeiro dia. A ocorrência de linfadenite foi maior nos suínos em maravalha, seguidos daqueles em casca de arroz e em sistema convencional. A porcentagem média de fibra bruta nas fezes foi maior nos animais criados em maravalha, seguido de casca de arroz, mostrando diferença entre os tratamentos. Isto indica que os animais ingeriram o substrato usado como cama. O ganho de peso médio diário e conversão alimentar foi melhor nos suínos criados em sistema convencional.

Uma das maiores fontes de energia disponíveis nas áreas rurais e agroindustriais é a biomassa. A mesma aparece na forma de resíduos vegetais e animais, tais como restos de colheita, esterco animal, plantações energéticas e efluentes agroindustriais. Estes resíduos podem ser utilizados pelo produtor rural ou agroindústria para a queima direta, visando a produção de calor ou produção de biogás em biodigestores. Junto às propriedades rurais onde há a atividade de suinocultura, ocorre a disponibilidade destes resíduos, caracterizando-se num grande potencial energético. Neste trabalho objetivou-se determinar o custo do biogás e a viabilidade de produção de eletricidade gerada a partir do mesmo numa propriedade rural, utilizando-se como equipamentos de conversão de biogás em eletricidade um motor de combustão interna acoplado a um gerador elétrico.
