Although edible insects (EI) have been consumed for ages in many countries around the world, in most European countries, this is not a traditional practice. Still, it has been encouraged as a sustainable source of animal protein besides other nutrients. The Food and Agricultural Organization and the United Nations, recommend consuming EI as a way to contribute to the sustainable development goals. Hence, this research investigated how participants from Portugal and Romania perceive EI, and how these can be useful as a source of nutrients and other benefits for human health, as well as possible risks. For that, it was undertaken a questionnaire survey, with data collected online in the two countries. For the analysis of data, basis statistics and chi-square tests were used. Results showed significant differences between Portuguese and Romanian participants in six out of ten questions, namely regarding safety (p < 0.001), use in traditional medicine (p < 0.001), possible infection with parasites (p = 0.021), of pesticides (p = 0.031), their usage as therapeutics (p = 0.001) and being potential sources of allergens (p < 0.001) and aflatoxins (p < 0.001). Also, differences were tested for other sociodemographic variables. The results showed significant differences according to age for only three questions, gender for only two questions, and Education for most of the questions, i.e., six out of the ten. These results highlighted the greater influence of variables like country of origin and education in the perception of the effects of EI in human health.

Making plant breeding programs less expensive, fast, practical, and accurate, especially for soybeans, promotes the selection of new soybean genotypes and contributes to the emergence of new varieties that are more efficient in absorbing and metabolizing nutrients. Using spectral information from soybean genotypes combined with nutritional information on secondary macronutrients can help genetic improvement programs select populations that are efficient in absorbing and metabolizing these nutrients. In addition, using machine learning algorithms to process this information makes the acquisition of superior genotypes more accurate. Therefore, the objective of the work was to verify the classification performance of soybean genotypes regarding secondary macronutrients by ML algorithms and different inputs. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, municipality of Chapadão do Sul, Brazil. Soybean was sown in the 2019/20 crop season, with the planting of 103 F2 soybean populations. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with two replications. At 60 days after crop emergence (DAE), spectral images were collected with a Sensifly eBee RTK fixed-wing remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), with autonomous takeoff control, flight plan, and landing. At the reproductive stage (R1), three leaves were collected per plant to determine the macronutrients calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) levels. The data obtained from the spectral information and the nutritional values of the genotypes in relation to Ca, Mg, and S were subjected to a Pearson correlation analysis; a PC analysis was carried out with a k-means algorithm to divide the genotypes into clusters. The clusters were taken as output variables, while the spectral data were used as input variables for the classification models in the machine learning analyses. The configurations tested in the models were spectral bands (SBs), vegetation indices (VIs), and a combination of both. The combination of machine learning algorithms with spectral data can provide important biological information about soybean plants. The classification of soybean genotypes according to calcium, magnesium, and sulfur content can maximize time, effort, and labor in field evaluations in genetic improvement programs. Therefore, the use of spectral bands as input data in random forest algorithms makes the process of classifying soybean genotypes in terms of secondary macronutrients efficient and important for researchers in the field.

Several factors contribute to the increase in irrigation demand: population growth, demand for higher value-added products, and the impacts of climate change, among others. High-quality water is essential for irrigation, so knowledge of water quality is critical. Additionally, water use in agriculture has been increasing in the last decades. Lack of water quality can cause drip clog, a lack of application uniformity, cross-contamination, and direct and indirect impacts on plants and soil. Currently, there is a need for more automated methods for evaluating and monitoring water quality for irrigation purposes, considering different aspects, from impacts on soil to impacts on irrigation systems. This work proposes a data-driven method to address this gap and implemented it in a case study in the PCJ river basin in Brazil. The methodology contains nine components and considers the main steps of the data lifecycle and the traditional machine learning workflow, allowing for automated knowledge extraction and providing important information for improving decision making. The case study illustrates the use of the methodology, highlighting its main advantages and challenges. Clustering different scenarios in three hydrological years (high, average, and lower streamflows) and considering different inputs (soil-related metrics, irrigation system-related metrics, and all metrics) helped generate new insights into the area that would not be easily obtained using traditional methods.

This systematic review was conducted to describe and discuss the main research findings available in the literature concerning the health and thermal comfort of dairy cattle housed in Compost-Bedded Pack Barn (CBP) systems, in comparison to Free Stall (FS), Tie-Stall (TS), and/or Loose Housing (LH) systems. Searches for peer-reviewed experimental articles in English were performed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Forty-three non-duplicated scientific articles were obtained and subjected to a four-stage evaluation process, according to the PRISMA methodology and predefined eligibility criteria. This process resulted in the selection of 13 articles for inclusion. Regarding animal health, the results provide evidence that the incidence of problems such as lameness, limb injuries, and reproductive disorders is lower in CBP systems. However, if bedding management is not effective in ensuring the provision of dry and comfortable surfaces, an increase in somatic cell count (SCC) and prevalence of mastitis incidence (PMI) may occur. For thermal comfort, it was found that the CBP system exhibited higher temperatures during summer and lower temperatures during winter when compared to FS with cross-ventilation in association with evaporative cooling. However, no differences were observed in terms of thermal comfort in spring and autumn. As this is a recent research area, caution should be exercised when extrapolating the results, considering the specificities of each cited study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing soybean meal with cottonseed cake in the diet offered to Santa Inês sheep on their performance, carcass yield and economic viability. Thirty-two uncastrated male sheep (27.48 ± 4.96 kg and 12 months old) were distributed in a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments (replacement of 0, 14, 28 and 42% of soybean meal with cottonseed cake in dry matter basis) and 8 replications. The inclusion levels of cottonseed cake in their diet provided a reduction in performance, thoracic perimeter, body capacity (measured in vivo), slaughter body weight, hot and cold carcass weights, external length, rump perimeter, thoracic perimeter, carcass compactness index, and leg compactness index (p < 0.05). The weights of the left half carcass, shoulder, neck, loin, and leg were reduced with increasing levels of cottonseed cake in their diet (p < 0.05). The quadratic effect was observed for the rib weight and the yield (p < 0.05). Diets with cottonseed cake had lower total feed costs/animal, revenue, gross margin, and leveling price, and had a higher benefit/cost. Under experimental conditions, despite reducing the feed costs and presenting an improvement in the cost ratio benefit, the use of levels up to 42% of cottonseed cake in sheep diets is not recommended, as it negatively affects the animal performance, carcass weights, and commercial cuts.

Agricultural expansion and intensification worldwide has caused a reduction in ecological infrastructures for insects, herbaceous plants, and vertebrate insectivores, among other organisms. Agriculture is recognized as one of the key influences in biodiversity decline, and initiatives such as the European Green Deal highlight the need to reduce ecosystem degradation. Among fruit crops, grapes are considered one of the most intensive agricultural systems with the greatest economic relevance. This study presents a compilation of management practices to enhance biodiversity performance, which applies generally to the agricultural sector and, in particular, to viticulture, concerning the diversity of plants, semi-natural habitats, soil management, and the chemical control strategies and pesticides used in agricultural cultivation. Through a critical review, this study identifies a set of recommendations for biodiversity performance and their corresponding effects, contributing to the dissemination of management options to boost biodiversity performance. The results highlight opportunities for future investigations in determining the needed conditions to ensure both biodiversity enhancement and productive gains, and understanding the long-term effects of innovative biodiversity-friendly approaches.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic effects of gly phosate on the direct development of soybean seedlings tolerant and sensitive to this herbicide. Seeds of one cultivar sensitive to and of two tolerant to glyphosate were placed to germinate in contact with distilled water (control) and two herbicide solutions (distilled water + 0.06 or 0.12% glyphosate), at 25°C, for seven days. Seedling responses to glyphosate were evaluated through the germination test, the seedling growth test, and the cell-cycle analysis (mitotic index and rate of abnormalities), carried out on the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh days after sowing. In the germination test under the herbicide treatments, no normal seedlings were observed for the sensitive cultivar, only for the tolerant ones. The herbicide treatments reduced the length of the seedlings and altered their morphology, making the radicle smaller than the hypocotyl. Regarding cytogenotoxic effects, glyphosate had a mitodepressive action on sensitive and tolerant seedlings, while the rate of abnormalities increased only in the sensitive cultivar. Glyphosate negatively affects the development of soybean seedlings at a macroscopic and cellular level, especially in cultivars sensitive to this herbicide.

Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar os determinantes do padrão de modernização da pecuária nas regiões imediatas do Nordeste e do Sul do Brasil. Especificamente, propôs-se a mensuração do Índice de Modernização Pecuária (IMP) e a comparação entre as duas regiões. Para atingir esses objetivos, empregou-se a técnica multivariada de análise fatorial exploratória, decomposta em componentes principais. Os dados utilizados foram coletados a partir do Censo Agropecuário de 2017, realizado pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Os resultados principais indicaram que os fatores determinantes da modernização incluem o nível tecnológico da pecuária, a sanidade animal e a capitalização. O Índice de Modernização Pecuária (IMP) revelou que 58,06% das regiões imediatas do Sul do Brasil foram classificadas com alto nível de modernização, em contraste com os 15,55% das regiões imediatas do Nordeste. No entanto, é importante destacar que, apesar de grande parte do Nordeste apresentar IMP médio e baixo, algumas regiões imediatas, como Caicó, Sumé e Catolé do Rocha, exibem um IMP superior ao observado no Sul do Brasil, destacando uma significativa disparidade intrarregional no processo de modernização da pecuária na região.

The use of waste generated in the agroindustry can result in increased production at a relatively low cost compared to traditional ingredients, especially for producers with easy access to this waste. This study proposes to estimate the kinetics of passage and degradation of corn, soybean, wheat residues and corn silage in the gastrointestinal tract of cattle. Four rumen-fistulated animals with an average weight of 450 ± 50 kg were assigned to four treatments (corn, soybean, wheat residues and corn silage) in a 4×4 Latin square experimental design. The fiber from the residues and corn silage used to estimate the passage kinetics was marked with potassium dichromate, whereas the in situ technique was employed to estimate the fiber degradation kinetics. A larger potentially degradable fraction and a smaller undegradable fraction were observed for corn residue and corn silage, whereas no differences were detected between the materials for passage kinetics. The residue from corn processing is similar to corn silage in terms of degradation kinetics and mean fiber retention time, while the other residues have worse degradation kinetics than corn, which is due mainly to the elevated undegradable fraction. All the analyzed residues, as well as corn silage, share the same characteristics of fiber passage kinetics.

O bário pode estar presente no solo como resultado de processos geológicos naturais ou por atividades antrópicas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os teores de bário em 34 solos da serra e oeste catarinenses e sua correlação com o pH, matéria orgânica, argila e saturação por bases. Para isso, foram realizadas coletas de solos no horizonte A em uma profundidade máxima de 20 cm, sendo secos em estufa, homogeneizados e peneirados. Os cátions Ca2+, Mg2+ e Al3+ foram extraídos com solução salina, o K+ em solução ácida e a acidez potencial com acetato de cálcio e as leituras foram realizadas no fotômetro de chamas e espectrofotômetro de absorção atômica. Para as análises de carbono orgânico total foi usado o equipamento Multi N/C 2100, o pH em água e KCl foi por meio de pHmetro de bancada, a argila pelo método da pipeta e o bário por digestão ácida seguindo o método 3050B e posterior leitura no ICP-OES. Os teores de bário variaram entre 18,73mg kg-1 (P19), que é um Organossolo Fólico Sáprico típico de área de mata nativa e 481,71mg kg-1 (P16) no Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico típico em área de campo nativo. O bário apresentou as maiores correlações positivas com o pH e com a saturação por bases. Os solos da região oeste apresentam maiores teores naturais de bário do que os da região serrana. Os teores naturais de bário nos solos podem variar mesmo em regiões próximas.

The use of crop residue silages is a viable alternative for producers to reduce feed costs. The present study was developed with the objective of investigating the inclusion of pineapple silage in replacement of sorghum silage in the diet of lactating cows regarding feed intake, production, and quality of milk. Eight crossbred (Holstein × Gir) cows with an average weight of 555±30 kg and an average milk yield of 12.50±3.25 kg/day, between 60 and 90 days in milk, were distributed into two simultaneous 4 × 4 Latin squares, at one animal per experimental unit. Silage of pineapple crop residue (PS) using plants after the harvest of the fruits was included in the roughage portion of the diet at increasing levels, with simultaneous and proportional removal of sorghum silage (SS) from the diets. The studied treatments thus consisted of the roughage portion containing: 1- 0% PS and 100% SS (100SS); 2- 34% PS and 66% SS (34PS66SS); 3- 67% PS and 33% SS (67PS33SS); 4- 100% PS and 0% SS (100PS). The diets were supplied twice daily, allowing 5% leftovers in relation to the quantity offered. The amounts of feed supplied, and orts of each animal were weighed for a subsequent determination of intake. The experiment was divided into four 21-day sub-periods, the first 14 days of which were used as an adaptation to the diet, while the others served for data collection. The milk was weighed from the 15th to the 19th day of each experimental period, and milk samples were collected on the last day of each period. Milk samples were sent to the laboratory, where they were analyzed. Dry matter, mineral matter, and lignin concentrations in the diet did not vary (P>0.05) as a function of PS inclusion in the roughage portion, while protein content, fiber content, and fat content levels were influenced. No effect of PS inclusion was observed (P>0.05) on the intakes of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, mineral material, or lignin. However, PS inclusion prompted (P

O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar histologicamente porções do tubo digestório (esôfago, estômago, cecos pilóricos e intestino) de 10 juvenis de pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) com o massa média de 3,45 kg ±0,67 capturados em viveiros de piscicultura. O processamento histológico seguiu os métodos de rotina propostos pelo Laboratório de Anatomia Animal- UFPI/ CPCE. Os cortes foram analisados em microscópio biológico trinocular (Nova®). As composições estruturais dos órgãos foram registradas por fotomicrografias em câmera digital de cinco megapixels acoplada ao microscópio com auxílio do software de captura Toupview®. No segmento medial do esôfago não foi observada a camada muscular da mucosa. No estômago observou-se glândulas gástricas na região medial do corpo localizadas na lâmina própria da túnica mucosa e túnica muscular aparentemente com espessura considerável. Os cecos pilóricos apresentaram características histológicas semelhantes aos primeiros segmentos do intestino médio do Pirarucu com aparente variação na espessura das dobras da mucosa e das túnicas submucosa e muscular de acordo com o diâmento do órgão. Foram observadas variações quanto a organização das dobras intestinais e distribuição das células caliciformes ao longo do tubo intestinal. Histologicamente os órgãos do tubo digestório do Pirarucu, apresentaram características semelhantes a outros teleósteos com o hábito alimentar carnívoro.

ABSTRACT Cowpea is a species used for various purposes, including green grain production. New cowpea cultivars should be developed to answer the growing market demands for green gains, which can be achieved via breeding programs. In this scenario, diallel cross is a breeding method that allows researchers to select the most suitable parents for hybridization. From this perspective, this study aimed to identify cowpea parents and hybrids with good combining abilities to initiate a breeding program aimed at green grain production. The experiment was developed at the Plant Science Department of the Federal University of Ceará. Fifteen treatments (five parents and ten hybrids) were set up in a randomized block design with ten replications. The variables of green pod length, green pod mass, number of grains, grain mass per green pod, and green grain length were studied in this experiment. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, test of means, and diallel analysis. The parents and hybrids showed variations for the evaluated traits. Both additive and non-additive effects influence the behavior of inherited traits. The parent CE0002 and hybrid combinations BRS Juruá x CE1002 and CE0957 x CE0002 are recommended for selection, showing desirable aspects for green grain production.

Pox viruses are widespread and infect many hosts, including insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Some, like chicken pox, are highly adapted to humans, and others, like monkeypox, can be transmitted from species to species. All are highly contagious and usually cause lesions or rashes. Poxvirus infections occur in domestic hoofstock, including cattle, sheep, goats, camels, horses, and swine, and they have been reported in wild ungulates, including mountain sheep, mountain goats, reindeer, mule deer, musk-ox, caribou, moose, and white-tailed deer. In 1983, Mule deerpox virus, a genetically distinct pox virus, was found in free-ranging mule deer in Wyoming. Since the 1990s, several cases of mule deerpox virus have been reported from black-tailed deer from California and Oregon and a white-tailed deer from Mississippi, suggesting that this virus may be a potential emerging pathogen for white-tailed deer. It is unclear whether the virus is more prevalent or whether detection has increased.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of using a semi-hydroponic system on the agronomic and postharvest variables of strawberry cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, with cultivars Aromas, Camarosa, Festival, Merced, Oso Grande, and San Andreas, with eight plants per plot and five replicates. Agronomic and postharvest variables were evaluated. Cultivar San Andreas showed the highest values for the agronomic variables number of commercial fruits and total and commercial yield per plant, with the highest yield in October, November, and December. The postharvest variables moisture, firmness, pH, titratable acidity, and reducing sugars did not differ between cultivars. In a semi-hydroponic system, the San Andreas cultivar presents the best results for the agronomic variables related to fruit yield, with the highest yield in October and November.

The phosphorus (P) addition can be helpful in the mitigation of the adverse effects of water deficit stress. However, the efficiency of wheat in utilizing both components has not been assessed in field conditions. This research aims to assess the effects of P and water addition on phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) and water productivity (WP) in field conditions for select wheat cultivars co-adapted to climate-induced agronomic challenges. Three wheat cultivars were selected based on their PUE and water WP from a previous experiment. The trials were conducted in field conditions over two consecutive years, from 2020 to 2021 (Season 1) and 2021–2022 (Season 2). The plants were grown on an andisol with a soil P concentration of 10 mg P kg−1 and 30 mg P kg−1. Two irrigation treatments were imposed: Well-watered (+W) and dryland (-W). The plants were sampled at three stages: tillering (Z25), anthesis (Z65), and ripening (Z95). At the end of the phenological cycle, grain yield components, grain yield, grain quality, PUE, and WP were evaluated. Phosphorus addition promotes plant growth, especially in the early vegetative stages, by enhancing tiller development and nutrient and water uptake. These effects were critical during the anthesis and ripening stages, enhancing yield components and higher grain production. Differential responses were observed across cultivars, underscoring the genotype-specificity in PUE and WP. Seasonal water deficit stress modulated these effects, highlighting a more complex genotype-environment-nutrient interaction. The water addition promoted PUE and WP, suggesting a synergy between the two components. Among the cultivars, Chevignon outperformed in grain yield, PUE, and WP. However, while phosphorus, water, and environmental factors influenced grain quality, the genetic background of the cultivar was the primary determinant of these components. This study advocates for implementing individual nutrient management strategies tailored to the specific cultivar and adaptable to environmental conditions under climate change.

Many crops of global importance, such as soybeans (Glycine max), come from the sowing process. This stage in the production cycle is the most important since the deposition of the seed in the soil will directly impact final productivity. Therefore, it must be carried out correctly to guarantee a better uniformity of seed distribution. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the interference of operating speed and different furrow closing pressures on the longitudinal distribution of seeds, productivity, soil mobilization, and sowing depth in direct and conventional planting systems. The experimental treatment units had an area of 10 m² distributed in a randomized block design and arranged in a system of sub-subdivided plots, with four replications, being: two types of soil preparation (direct planting and conventional system), and, in each one, two operating speeds (3.42 and 6.82 km h-1) and three pressures in the furrow closing system (12.57; 14.94 and 16.52 kfg). The type of soil preparation system influenced the depth and spacing between seeds. The operating speed of 3.42 km h-1 determined the better longitudinal distribution of the seeds. Soil mobilization and blistering were significantly changed with increasing pressure from the compacting wheels, having the most significant effect at a pressure of 16.52 kgf.

ABSTRACT Increasing soybean yield in the MATOPIBA region can be attributed to fertility management, which is crucial to achieving maximum agronomic efficiency. Therefore, the proper management begins with the assessment of plant nutrition. This study aimed to evaluate soybean nutritional status in western Bahia using the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS). Database comprised 153 samples from commercial fields located in the research area. To carry out the evaluation using the DRIS method, the database contained information on nutritional levels and leaf productivity of the sampled areas. Database was divided into high-productivity populations (reference population) and low-productivity populations, based on the inflection point value of the cumulative cubic function of yield. The DRIS method allowed for evaluating the potential response to fertilization; however, this method was inefficient in recommending fertilizer doses in both subpopulations. For the sufficiency levels proposed by DRIS, the nutrients N, K, Ca, Mg and S had their maximum and minimum limits reduced, while Cu, Fe and Zn had their ranges of sufficiency expanded, when compared with ranges proposed by other authors. In addition, Zn and Mn were more limiting due to lack for the high-yield subpopulation, and P and Mn for the low-yield subpopulation. The most limiting nutrients due to excess were P and Zn for the high-yield, while K and S were limiting for the low yield subpopulation.

ABSTRACT: Hops are grown mainly for the brewing market due to the rich chemical composition that gives beer aroma and bitterness. Brazil is one of the largest beer producers and consumers in the world and one of the largest hop importers. There is growing demand and interest in producing hops for domestic supply; however, as this crop originates from a temperate climate and the Northern Hemisphere, it is important to carry out research that describes the development of hops in a tropical climate to provide information on its cultivation in Brazil, as well as to determine its behavior in organic cultivation. A randomized block design was adopted, the treatments consisted of two cropping systems, conventional and organic, for Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety cultivation, with four blocks and three plants per plot. Gas exchange analyzes of plants under both cultivation systems were performed to obtain measurements of A, g s , Ci, E, WUE and A/Ci, morphometric and yield analyzes were also carried out. In comparison with the plants of the organic system, the plants of the conventional cultivation had greater photosynthetic efficiency; however, the practices adopted in the organic cultivation system provided the plants with greater productive capacity.

ABSTRACT: The drying agroindustrial products is used to preserve the sensory and nutritional quality and to reduce the biological activity, preventing deterioration and loss of commercial value. The objective was to study the mathematical modeling Guava bark drying to obtain flour and to determine and evaluate the effective diffusion coefficient, get the activation energy and the thermodynamic properties in drying temperatures of 45, 55, 65 and 75 °C. The experiment was conducted Instituto Federal Goiano - Campus Rio Verde, the guava was purchased in local shops in the city of Rio Verde Goiás, in the commercial maturity. Among the analyzed models, Midilli was the best to represent the drying phenomenon. The effective diffusion coefficient increased with increasing temperature and the activation energy for liquid diffusion drying was 37,207kJ mol-1. The enthalpy and entropy increased with increasing drying temperature. While the Gibbs free energy increased with increasing drying temperature.

Downy mildew is a major problem for grape growers, as this disease is difficult to control. Synthetic fungicides are used to treat downy mildew with handheld backpack and tractor sprayer applications, with high chemical exposure by operators. As important tools for maximising yield, application technologies must be studied to optimise control efficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of fungicide spray application using Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) for the control of downy mildew in grapevine, with different spray volumes. The study was divided into two experiments using 4 vine lines, 10 blocks and 5 treatments with different mixture volumes: Experiment 1 with RPA application of 5 mixture volumes - 0, 22, 44, 66, and 88 L ha−1; Experiment 2 with RPA application of 3 mixture volumes - 44, 66, and 88 L ha−1 and a backpack application of one mixture volume - 800 L ha−1. Coverage percentage, droplet density and volume median diameter (VMD) were evaluated. Downy mildew severity on grapevine leaves was assessed using visual analysis and a diagrammatic scale. The application of 44 L ha−1 provided the greatest coverage and droplet density in the upper and middle strata; however, the backpack application had a better droplet distribution than the RPA application. Treatments of 44 L ha−1 with RPA and backpack application (800 L ha−1) provided the best disease control. In the trellis system, RPA application must be improved because of the low coverage in the lower parts of the plant, and further studies with different spray nozzles and application heights are needed.

O analfabetismo financeiro apresenta-se como um agravante presente em diversos contextos. Tais implicações tomam proporções mais expressivas quando relacionadas ao gênero feminino e em regiões rurais, onde, historicamente, residem indivíduos com acesso assimétrico às informações. Nesse sentido, este estudo objetiva mensurar o nível de alfabetização financeira da mulher rural no interior do Ceará. A coleta de dados se deu por meio da aplicação de questionários, adotando como proxies o conhecimento financeiro e o comportamento financeiro, considerando como metodologia de análise as técnicas estatísticas de agrupamento e discriminante. Tal análise permitiu a formação de três grupos: Baixo, Médio e Alto Nível de Alfabetização Financeira. Os resultados demonstraram que as mulheres rurais pesquisadas guardam baixo nível de alfabetização financeira. Tais resultados endossam a necessidade de estratégias e políticas públicas focalizadas na mulher rural, tornando-as efetivas e aplicadas às suas particularidades. Tendo em vista o fosso existente neste campo de estudo, busca-se incentivar, também, o desenvolvimento de pesquisas futuras nos demais espaços rurais, traçando perfis e soluções concernentes. Abstract: Financial illiteracy presents itself as an aggravating factor present in several contexts. Such implications take on more significant proportions when related to the female gender and in rural regions, where, historically, individuals with asymmetric access to information reside. In this sense, this objective study measures the level of financial literacy of rural women in the Ceará State in Brazil. Data collection was carried out through the application of questionnaires, adopting financial knowledge and financial behavior as proxies, considering grouping and discriminant statistical techniques as analysis methodology. This analysis allowed the formation of three groups: Low, Medium and High Level of Financial Literacy. The results demonstrated that the rural women surveyed had a low level of financial literacy. Such results endorse the need for strategies and public policies focused on rural women, making them effective and applied to their particularities. Given the gap that exists in this field of study, we also seek to encourage the development of future research in other rural spaces, outlining worrying profiles and solutions .

La introducción de las hortalizas como cultivo alternativo en la selva alta peruana también implican la búsqueda de métodos de control de plagas amigables con el ambiente y el cuidado de la biodiversidad, aquí evaluamos el efecto biocida de los extractos acuosos de neem (Azadirachta indica), barbasco (Lonchocarpus nicou L.) y molle (Schinus molle L.) para el control del pulgo (Brevicoryne brassicae L.) en col (Brassica oleracea var capitata) durante la campaña agrícola 2020, en un diseño de Bloques Completos al Azar (DBCA) con 3 tratamientos, más testigo absoluto y 4 réplicas. Los extractos se prepararon a partir de la combinación de hojas, tallos, corteza, frutos y raíces de las plantas a razón de 1kg y aplicados a una dosis de 6 ml por litro de agua. El barbasco fue el más eficiente en la reducción del número de pulgones por planta y la más toxica para causar en un 75,34% de mortalidad en 45 días de tratamiento, seguida por molle con 61,43% y con peso de pella de hasta 1725 g. Se concluye que los extractos vegetales disminuyeron las poblaciones del pulgón y resultan adecuados para su uso en los programas del Manejo Integrado.

El volcán Chimborazo es el punto más cercano al sol y es reconocido a nivel nacional e internacional 90.000 personas visitan anualmente este atractivo turístico que está siendo amenazado por el avance de la frontera agrícola produciendo la pérdida de servicios ecosistémicos, que se encuentran en este ecosistema. Esta investigación estimó la disposición a pagar (DAP) de la población de la ciudad de Riobamba, por la conservación de la belleza escénica del volcán Chimborazo. Se aplicó 406 encuestas, mediante el método de valoración contingente dicotómico de doble límite, usando un modelo de máxima verosimilitud en el software Stata. Se desarrolló cuatro modelos: de simple límite, de simple límite con otras variables explicativas, de doble límite y de doble límite con otras variables explicativas, siendo este último estadísticamente más significativo. Como resultado se determinó que la DAP es USD 0,81 mensuales para conservar la belleza escénica del volcán Chimborazo, valor que se incrementa si se incluye la variable consumo de otros productos para reducir el cambio climático en USD 0,19, la edad, el pago mensual del agua y el nivel de educación disminuyen la DAP en USD 0,02, USD 0,01, y 0,05 respectivamente.

This study aims to evaluate the biocontrol potential of Meyerozyma guilliermondii (CECT13190), an endophytic yeast, and its role in mitigating the adverse effects of abiotic and biotic stress in cucumber plants. The relevance of this study lies in addressing the threat of Fusarium wilt, a major fungal disease that impacts cucumber crop productivity, as well as the exacerbation of food scarcity caused by climate change-induced abiotic stress factors such as high temperatures and drought. The study was conducted in a greenhouse environment where Cucumis sativus seedlings were exposed to biotic (F. oxysporum inoculation) and abiotic stress conditions (heat and water deficit). The impact of M. guilliermondii on treated plants’ physiology, growth, development, and flowering was assessed. The study confirmed the biocontrol activity of M. guilliermondii against F. oxysporum and highlighted its positive effects as a plant growth promoter. It enhanced overall plant health, activated natural defense mechanisms against F. oxysporum, and alleviated the detrimental impacts of abiotic stress. Notably, M. guilliermondii also induced early flowering in cucumber plants. This research underscores the potential of M. guilliermondii as a biocontrol agent for managing Fusarium wilt, enhancing stress tolerance, promoting early flowering, and offering promising prospects for sustainable crop production amidst fungal diseases and climate change-induced stressors. The findings emphasize the importance of utilizing M. guilliermondii to improve cucumber crop productivity and address food scarcity challenges.

El estudio de la respuesta al estrés salino a partir de indicadores fisiológicos en genotipos de marañón (Anacardium occidentale L.), contribuye al conocimiento de los mecanismos adaptativos de esta especie a condiciones estresantes. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar la plasticidad fenotípica y la variación en indicadores relacionados con la fotosíntesis en dos genotipos (rojo y amarillo) de Anacardium occidentale L., durante la fase de plántulas en condiciones de invernadero. Se evaluó el efecto de cinco niveles de salinidad (0.02 dS m-1, 5 dS m-1, 10 dS m-1, 15 dS m-1 y 20 dS m-1) sobre caracteres asociados a la fotosíntesis, intercambio gaseoso y la fluorescencia de la clorofila. Se calculó la plasticidad fenotípica en respuesta al estrés salino de los indicadores evaluados a través del índice de plasticidad fenotípica. La variedad roja mostró las mayores afectaciones producto del estrés salino en los indicadores tasa fotosintética, transpiración, CO2 subestomático, Fm, Fv, Fv/Fm, Fv/Fo y Pi abs. Las diferencias significativas encontradas en cuanto a la plasticidad fenotípica mostraron valores superiores en la variedad roja en la mayoría de los indicadores evaluados. Se muestra el efecto negativo que tiene la salinidad en el estadio de plántulas en los indicadores relacionados con la fotosíntesis, intercambio gaseoso, y fluorescencia de la clorofila, así como las diferencias significativas existentes en cuanto a los indicadores evaluados y los niveles de plasticidad fenotípica de los mismos entre genotipos. La fotosíntesis y la conductancia estomática fueron los indicadores que mostraron los mayores valores de plasticidad fenotípica.

The salinity of soils and water for irrigation is a limitation that influences the productivity of crops that has increased worldwide and affects the morphology and physiology of plants since it causes osmotic stress and ionic toxicity and impairs the absorption of water and nutrients. The effect of salt stress on some morphological and physiological traits in Coccoloba uvifera (L.) L. (sea grape) seedlings from different origins was evaluated and the traits whose behavior under salt stress could be used as an effective criterion of tolerance to salinity were determined. A completely randomized design experiment with ten repetitions was performed. The factors under study were salinity (0, 5, 15, and 25 dS m-1), which was maintained for a period of sixteen weeks, and the second factor was the origin of the plant material. The salinity level and the seedlings’ origin significantly influenced the morphological and physiological variables controlled. However, it is necessary to carry out in situ experiments to obtain more information related to the mechanisms used by sea grape to tolerate salinity conditions, because in the consulted sources no research focused on evaluating the effect of salinity and the origin on the morphology and physiology of C. uvifera seedlings in Cuba has been found. The results of the research provide preliminary information to understand the negative effect of salt stress on this type of plant. The behavior of some controlled traits under salt stress can be used as an effective criterion of tolerance to salinity.

Objetivo. Exponer el método de observación visual de categorías de bocados para estimar el consumo de rumiantes en agostaderos, su complejidad, fortalezas y limitantes. Materiales y métodos. La revisión se focalizó en los trabajos que mejoraron el método (validación, aumento en la precisión de la estimación, repetibilidad y fiabilidad) y en la identificación de las fortalezas y limitantes del método, se presentan ejemplos de su uso en etología, nutrición y parasitología. Resultados. El método consiste en un conjunto de técnicas que integran elementos de etología, botánica, nutrición y estadística, resultando en una estimación confiable y detallada de la cantidad y calidad de follaje ingerido por los rumiantes. La validación fue efectuada por diversos autores en estudios que abarcan desde los marcadores de óxido de cromo hasta el uso de animales fistulados. El método de observación de bocados evolucionó a lo largo de los años incorporando mejoras como el refinamiento de las categorías de bocados según el tamaño y forma de las partes de las plantas consumidas (tablas de categorías de bocados), y el uso de protocolos de habituación en los animales a observar para evitar influenciar la conducta de ingestión de los animales bajo estudio. Conclusión. Es un método de bajo costo, respetuoso del bienestar animal, no interfiere con la conducta habitual, la estimación entre observadores tiene buena repetibilidad y exactitud, la estimación es cuantitativa y detallada. Sin embargo, su implementación es laboriosa, requiere conocimientos de etología, botánica y entrenamiento en la identificación de las categorías de bocados. Puede considerarse un método vigente, aplicable si se dispone del recurso humano capacitado.

ABSTRACT present study aimed to determine the effects of different light restriction levels (shading levels) on soybean genetic parameters using a Bayesian multi-trait model (MTM) and select high-yielding soybean cultivars. Eighteen commercial soybean cultivars bred in a soybean breeding program were evaluated over two agricultural seasons. Three shading levels were used over two agricultural crop seasons, giving six treatments (light restriction × crop season). The experiments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with six treatments replicated thrice. The genetic values and parameters were estimated using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm. Broad-sense heritability range from 0.2093 to 0.7153. The lowest genotypic variance estimate was observed at the 45 % photosynthetically active radiation level in the 2019/2020 crop season year compared with that of other shading levels. Furthermore, a 40 % selection intensity had the highest soybean yield under different shading levels. The Bayesian MTM combined with the factor analysis and genotype-ideotype distance method can be used to evaluate and select soybean genotypes considering different shading levels. The soybean cultivars 8579RSF, NS8338, NS7901, NS7667, RK8115, and 8473RSF had higher genetic potential than other cultivars under different shading levels.

Resumo A pandemia gerou uma das maiores crises mundiais, com redução do poder aquisitivo da população e dificuldades no acesso aos alimentos. Neste contexto, este estudo objetivou analisar as condições de produção da farinha e a relação desta com a segurança alimentar de agricultores familiares da cadeia da mandioca, do Recôncavo Baiano, durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Realizou-se estudo transversal, com coleta de dados por meio de questionário, tratamento por estatística descritiva e testes de associação. Do total de participantes (n=86), 64% indicaram alterações no volume de produção de farinha e na renda. Registrou-se redução na produção mensal, no número de trabalhadores e nas horas trabalhadas nas casas de farinha, além da redução na diversidade de compradores. O aumento na renda advinda da farinha foi associado a um pequeno número de produtores, mais experientes (p=0,047). Apesar da manutenção das feiras dos municípios estudados, houve alterações no comportamento dos clientes. O comércio online e por delivery foram pouco representativos. Dos entrevistados, 50% relataram preocupação de que os alimentos acabassem. As medidas governamentais de apoio aos agricultores familiares não tiveram alcance satisfatório junto aos participantes. A maior parte recebeu auxílio emergencial, sendo também beneficiários de programas sociais, o que evidencia vulnerabilidades no setor.

Staphylococcus spp. are among the most isolated bacteria in clinical and subclinical mastitis cases in dairy cattle. The genus comprises biofilm-forming bacteria capable of producing toxins and acquiring resistance to multiple drugs. This work aimed to evaluate the genetic profile related to virulence and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of Staphylococcus spp., isolated from clinical mastitis and non-clinical fresh cows using whole genome sequencing (WGS). The bacterial collection consisted of 29 Staphylococcus strains isolated from clinical cases of mastitis (n = 7), as well as milk samples collected from fresh cows (n = 22). Strains were identified as Staphylococcus aureus (n = 2), Staphylococcus chromogenes (n = 19), and Staphylococcus haemolyticus (n = 8). A total of 94 virulence genes were observed, including pvl, icaA, icaD genes, and microbial surface components that recognize adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs). We also detected important resistance genes such as blaZ, ant(4), erm(B), fexA, lnu(D), tet(L), and tet(M). The phylogenetic tree listed the species as expected and presented four clades. A variety of virulence and resistance genes were detected. In addition, the expression of important genes such as those responsible for the formation of biofilms and enterotoxins may represent a risk to the health of consumers. being a concern for public health.

ABSTRACT: The Amazonian manatee (Trichechusinunguis) is an aquatic mammal threatened with extinction. However, few studies have investigated the pathogens in this species, which may affect both animal and human health. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency, distribution, and patterns of antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichiacoli colonizing the nasal and rectal cavities of Amazonian manatees kept in captivity at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Rectal and nasal swabs from 44 manatees of different ages were used in this study. The genus Staphylococcus was isolated from the nasal swabs of 32 (72.7%) animals, with two individuals harboring more than one species of Staphylococcus. S. sciuri was the most commonly isolated species. Resistance to penicillin was observed in 13 (40.6%) isolates, more frequent than the other antimicrobials tested (P = 0.01). E. coli was isolated from the rectal swabs of all animals, with phylogroup B1 being the most frequent among the strains obtained (P = 0.0008). Four isolates (6.8%) were positive for virulence factors, three of which were classified as enterotoxigenicE. coli (ETEC) and one as enteropathogenicE. coli (EPEC). To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli in Amazonian manatee samples. This study revealed nasal colonization by Staphylococcus spp., mainly S. sciuri, and diarrheagenicE. coli isolates, including antimicrobial-resistant strains.

ABSTRACT: The regional lymphatic connections of the mammary glands in canines are poorly investigated, both in healthy animals and in those with mammary neoplasms. The objective was to establish the occurrence of metastases in the medial iliac lymph nodes (MILN) in bitches with mammary neoplasm, in addition to evaluating the effectiveness of the technique of lymphatic labeling of the MILN, administering methylene blue (MB) dye intrauterinely or intradermally. Thirty-two bitches with tumors in different mammary glands were included in the study. In 13 bitches (GU group), the MILNs were stained with intrauterine MB, followed by unilateral lymphadenectomy, ovariohysterectomy (OVH) and unilateral mastectomy. Nineteen bitches (GI group) underwent OVH, followed by MILN staining with intradermal MB, lymphadenectomy, and unilateral mastectomy. In GU, 11 bitches (84.62%) exhibited MB-stained MILNs, but staining was not observed in two (15.38%). Metastasis to MILNs was observed in three bitches (9.38%) from the GI and two (6.25%) from the GU. Intrauterine and intradermal staining of MILNs in bitches with mammary tumors was efficient, but intradermal administration of MB produced better results. Given metastatic spread to MILNs in approximately 15.63% of patients, we recommend that screening for MILNs should be considered as part of the staging of animals with malignant mammary neoplasms.

Diets composed of whole flint corn grain (WCG) without any roughage source are often used in South American countries. The primary source of protein in theses diets is soybean meal. We hypothesized that the combination of different protein sources improves ruminal fermentation and nutrient digestibility. This study was carried out to assess the impacts of replacing 50% of the soybean meal by other protein sources on voluntary dry matter intake (DMI), digestibility, efficiency of N utilization, efficiency of grain use, metabolic characteristics, and ingestive behavior of Nellore cattle fed WCG diets. Five rumen-cannulated Nellore Bulls (average BW = 651.6 ± 31.83 kg) were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square design, randomly assigned to five diets consisting of 85% of WCG and 15% of pellet supplement with combination of different protein sources: SM - pellet supplement with soybean meal only; CM - soybean meal and cottonseed meal; SFM - soybean meal and sunflower meal; DDG - soybean meal and DDG; DDGS - soybean meal and DDGS. The replacement of 50% of soybean meal by DDG increased (P0.05) by protein sources. Protein sources also did not affect the grain-use efficiency (P>0.05), with an average value of 96.6% and only 3.4% of the corn grains recovered in the feces. Diante da importância de se considerar os impactos espaciais provocados pela instalação de empreendimentos hidrelétricos, ponderando riscos e viabilidades dessas estruturas, o objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em determinar a área territorial comprometida pela implantação das Pequenas Centrais Hidrelétricas (PCH) Bedim, Jacaré e Vila Galupo, construídas no Rio Santana, subafluente do Rio Iguaçu, no sudoeste paranaense. Foi realizada a vetorização de um trecho deste curso d’água contendo as três PCHs a partir de duas imagens do satélite Sentinel-2, adquiridas em 06/02/2016 e 20/02/2021, respectivamente antes e após a instalação dos reservatórios, resultando em 0,480 km2 de área inundada. Observou-se que, ainda que a capacidade de geração energética das PCHs em comparação às grandes Usinas Hidrelétricas (UHE) seja reduzida, seu índice de produção energética mostrou-se significativamente superior (cerca de 3,5 vezes maior) à UHE Itaipu Binacional, considerada a mais eficiente entre as grandes geradoras. Sob o ponto de vista de eficiência e impactos ambientais, as PCHs podem ser consideradas uma alternativa energética sustentável quando se trata do aspecto área inundada pelo reservatório. Abstract: Given the importance of considering the spatial impacts caused by the installation of hydroelectric projects, considering the risks and viability of these structures, the objective of this work was to determine the territorial area compromised by the implementation of the Bedim, Jacaré and Vila Galupo Small Hydropower Plants (SHP), built in Santana River, a subtributary of the Iguaçu River, in southwest Paraná. The vectorization of a stretch of this watercourse containing the three SHPs was carried out from two images from the Sentinel-2 satellite, acquired on 02/06/2016 and 02/20/2021, respectively before and after the installation of the reservoirs, resulting in 0.480 km2 of flooded area. It was observed that, even though the energy generation capacity of SHPs compared to big Hydroelectric Plants (UHE) is reduced, their energy production index was significantly higher (about 3.5 times higher) than UHE Itaipu Binacional, considered the most efficient among the big generators. From the point of view of efficiency and environmental impacts, SHPs can be considered a sustainable energy alternative when it comes to the area flooded by the reservoir.

Abstract: Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a tuberous root with a high phenolic compounds and fibers content which has a prebiotic effect, both important for preventing and/or promoting the reduction of non-communicable chronic diseases risks. However, this root’s shelf life is highly reduced and culminates the reduction of the beneficial to health compounds, which can be avoided by some strategies. In this sense, this work aimed to produce yacon beverages added with anti-browning agents (cysteine or citric acid) and evaluated the spontaneous fermentation during storage. Three yacon beverages have been produced with cysteine or citric acid (0.05% w/w) and a control beverage. Beverages were analyzed by microbiological counts, nutritional composition, physical-chemical characteristics, total phenolic compounds and phenolic acids, for 60 day storage. The data were evaluated by ANOVA and compared using the Duncan test (p≤0.05) or regression models were adjusted. Regarding microorganisms, all beverages have reached 109 CFU.ml-1 after 30 day storage. To the anti-browning agents use, the differences were occasional; however, the citric acid beverage had a desirable pH (< 4.5) for a fermented beverage, which allows inhibition of undesirable bacteria and a higher proportional initial FOS amount and less variation with 30 and 60 day storage. However, the citric acid beverage have presented smaller amount of phenolic compounds like chlorogenic and gallic acids (230.37 ± 168.63 and 40.87 ± 1.32, respectively). So, we conclued that spontaneous fermentation was a preparation technique which has added nutritional and functionals values to the yacon beverage, in special to beverage added citric acid, with a higher proportion of FOS.

This study evaluated the effects of energy supplementation on the intake and milk fatty acid composition of cows grazing BRS Kurumi elephant grass pasture during the rainy season. Two treatments (with and without supplementation) were evaluated using a switchback design with six Holstein × Gyr dairy cows after the peak of lactation. The average milk yield, body weight, and days in milk of the cows at the beginning of the study were 18.0±2.89 kg day−1, 560±66 kg, and 99±12, respectively. The evaluations were performed over three grazing cycles, with adaptation periods of 14 days and six days of sampling. In the energy supplementation treatment, each cow received 3 kg day−1 of ground corn (as-fed basis), with 2 kg day−1 at the morning milking and 1 kg day−1 at the afternoon milking. The ground corn presented 87.5% dry matter, 7.3% crude protein, 5.1% ether extract, and 85% of total digestible nutrients. The cows supplemented with ground corn consumed more oleic (+567%) and linoleic (+88%) acids. Unsupplemented cows consumed 26% more α-linolenic acid and produced milk with more oleic (+10%), vaccenic (+23%), and rumenic (+21%) acids, and less (−7%) pro-atherogenic fatty acids (lauric + myristic + palmitic acids). Milk fat from unsupplemented cows showed better nutritional quality, with lower atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indices and a higher hypo/hypercholesterolemic fatty acid ratio.

Esta investigación abordó las concepciones que sobre educación ambiental-cultural tienen los jóvenes de la Universidad de Cienfuegos “Carlos Rafael Rodríguez”. El procesamiento los datos obtenidos mediante la aplicación de la encuesta fueron procesados mediante el software profesional SPSS. Los resultados permitieron determinar el conocimiento general e integral sobre medio ambiente, cultura y sociedad en la cual conviven y que, mediante la ciencia, la tecnología y la innovación es posible mantener unas relaciones positivas con el entorno. Se revela la necesidad de seguir contribuyendo al conocimiento del medio ambiente y el poder del ser humano para transformar la sociedad desde la ciencia para un futuro mejor.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo identificar indicadores fisiológicos y bioquímicos para caracterizar genotipos de tomate tolerantes al estrés salino. Se estudiaron cuatro variedades (Amalia, Vyta, Campbell-28 y Claudia) en condiciones semicontroladas, un medio salinizado a base de NaCl a conductividad eléctrica (CE) de 6 dS m-1 con su respectivo control a CE=0.36 dS m-1. Se evaluaron indicadores: contenido de prolina, glicina betaína, proteínas solubles totales, clorofila a y carotenoides, potencial hídrico en hojas y raíces, potencial osmótico foliar y ajuste osmótico (AO). Se realizó un análisis de componentes principales (ACP) para determinar los indicadores que más contribuyen a la tolerancia a la salinidad. Existió variabilidad de respuesta en los indicadores evaluados entre el medio salino y el medio control. La prolina se incrementó entre 3 y 9 mf g-1 ms en raíces y entre 8 y 23 mg g-1 mf en hojas, demostrando la capacidad de osmorregular en función de solutos orgánicos. Las variedades Amalia y Vyta presentaron los mayores incrementos de glicina betaína (18 mg g-1 ms). Todas las variedades redujeron su potencial hídrico en condiciones de salinidad a valores menores de -0.9 MPa, en consecuencia existió un AO significativo entre las variedades, siendo Vyta y Amalia las de mayor AO. Partiendo del ACP se encontró que las variables potencial hídrico radicular y foliar, potencial osmótico, ajuste osmótico y el contenido de prolina fueron las de mayor contribución a la variabilidad total encontrada entre variedades. Vyta y Amalia resultaron las tolerantes mientras que Claudia y Campbell-28 clasificaron como susceptibles.

O objetivo desta nota é caracterizar o grau de inserção da Agroecologia nos currículos dos cursos de graduação em Zootecnia ofertados nas instituições de ensino superior públicas do Brasil, aferindo assim, a presença bem como a ausência de disciplinas em suas matrizes curriculares. Das 74 instituições brasileiras que ofertam cursos de graduação em Zootecnia, apenas 24 contém a Agroecologia em seus currículos. A oferta de disciplinas de Agroecologia e afins estão presentes em 16 unidades da federação, em todas as regiões do país.

Integrated crop-livestock-forest (ICLF) systems involve intercropping of various crops to achieve beneficial and synergistic outcomes, enhancing both economic viability and environmental sustainability. Considering the complexity of integrated agrosystems and the economic importance of soybean production in Brazil, we aimed to investigate the effects of two ICLF systems on the physical characteristics and quality of soybeans produced. The treatments comprised plots (two ha) with either single-row (ICLFS) or triple-row (ICLFT), tree configurations intercropped with soybean (maize and forage grass), and control plots (one ha), whose crops were cultivated under full sunlight (CFS). Soybeans were harvested from plants located at 3, 6, 10 and 15 m from tree bands in the north and south faces of the ICLF systems and at random positions in the CFS plots. The moisture content, electrical conductivity of the exudate solution, hue angle and chroma index of grains harvested from ICLFS and ICLFT were similar to those of CFS-grown soybeans. However, the mass of 1000 grains and the bulk density values of ICLF-grown soybeans were significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) than those of grains harvested from CFS plots. We conclude that the quality of soybean seeds was not negatively affected by the conditions prevailing in the ICLF systems. Moreover, it appears that the forest component contributed positively to the ecosystem by providing a favorable microclimate for the development of soybean grains.

Background: Potato cultivation in the northern highlands of Peru has intensified due to the high demand of the national market for the nutritional quality of this tuber, however, the conventional system presents critical points in social, economic and environmental terms that limit the profitability of the cultivation, being relevant the identification of these critical points to carry out the intervention and propose strategies to improve said agricultural system. Objective: Determine the sustainability index of potato producing farms in the province of Cutervo, Cajamarca, Peru. Methodology: 165 questionnaires with structured questions were applied to farmers whose main activity is potato cultivation. Multiple correspondence analysis was used to determine the reliability of these surveys. The values of the economic, social and environmental indicators were found through multidimensional analysis and an ordinal scale from 1 to 5, in which "1" was considered the least sustainable and "5" as a maximum level of sustainability. Results: The analysis of internal consistency of data for the 14 indicators and 24 sub-indicators presented Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.977 and 0.968 respectively, indicating high reliability and acceptable internal consistency of the evaluated indicators and therefore, the questionnaire presents high reliability. Likewise, the sustainable analysis of the potato agroecosystem in Cutervo reported that the farms are socially and environmentally sustainable, with indexes of 3.39 and 3.11, respectively, while the economic dimension presented critical conditions with a value below the minimum sustainable threshold (2.93) being the critical points: "percentage that causes the incidence of pests and diseases in potatoes", "number of marketing channels", "dependence on external inputs", "application of organic matter", "internal conservation”, “situ of native varieties”, “degree of damage from the use of pesticides” and “use of pesticides”. Regarding the general sustainability index, the potato agroecosystem is not sustainable. Implications: Potato producers in the mountains need to reduce environmental impact and increase productivity and profitability. Conclusion: The sustainability index of the potato agroecosystem in Cutervo, Peru, reported that the social and environmental dimensions exceeded the critical conditions while the economic dimension presented values below the minimum threshold of sustainability, resulting that the potato production system is not sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene in the sub-indicators that presented critical points and thus establish strategies to improve the potato agroecosystem in the northern highlands of Peru.

No estado do Paraná a cultura do morangueiro é relevante, contudo, é um mercado que ainda está se expandindo. Conhecer e determinar os principais aspectos econômicos relacionados ao cultivo se torna essencial para o sucesso do empreendimento. O objetivo neste trabalho foi realizar um levantamento dos principais custos de implantação, condução e a viabilidade econômica da cultura do morangueiro em sistema orgânico de produção fora do solo em substrato em Laranjeiras do Sul-PR. O estudo foi realizado na safra de 2022. A pesquisa foi dividida em três etapas. A primeira foi realizada através de pesquisa bibliográfica de todos os aspectos do sistema orgânico de morangueiro fora do solo em substrato. A segunda etapa se constitui de um estudo de caso e a terceira etapa, referente às análises dos custos de produção e da viabilidade econômica da cultura. Os custos totais de condução e implantação de uma estufa de 250 m² de morangueiros com 1800 plantas atingiram R$ 39.147,00, cujos componentes mais significativos na composição dos custos foram os gastos com a estrutura, especialmente com postes de eucalipto. Para a análise de viabilidade se utilizou os seguintes índices: Valor Presente Líquido (VPL), Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR) e Payback descontado. Os resultados obtidos identificam viabilidade financeira na produção, pois o VPL foi de R$ 69.509,88; a TIR de 57%; a rentabilidade foi de R$ 25.097,00/ano em uma estufa de 250 m²; e o Payback foi de 1,6 anos. Analisando esses índices se afirmar que o investimento é viável e promissor.

The partial substitution of maize by tropical legumes for the production of silage has aroused interest, for bringing benefits of increasing the crude protein content of corn-only silage, constituting an important alternative for the production of food in a more sustainable way. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition 30% tropical legumes on the fermentative characteristics and nutritive value of maize silage. The experimental design was entirely randomized with three replications. The treatments consisted of the following silages: Maize; Stylosanthes cv. Campo Grande, Stylosanthes cv. Bela: Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan cv. BRS Mandarim), maize + 30% Campo Grande; maize + 30% Bela and maize + 30% Pigeon pea, totaling 21 experimental silos. The results show that exclusive legume silage without preservatives present fermentative losses that compromise the silage quality. Addition of 30% legumes to maize silage improves the nutritional quality of the silage without compromising its fermentation profile. Stylosanthes cv. Campo Grande and Bela are the most recommended locations for maize silage. Thus, a mixed silage of maize and legumes is an alternative to improve the crude protein content of exclusive maize exclusive silage, greater sustainability, and reduced fermentative losses of legume silages.

Abstract The objective of this work was to describe and compare the patterns of genetic variation in 19 populations of Anacardium humile from the Cerrado biome of the Brazilian Midwestern region. The ex situ germplasm collection of Universidade Federal de Jataí, in the state of Goiás, Brazil, was used for the study. To quantify the genetic variability of A. humile, 529 plants from 17 populations in Goiás from 2 in the state of Mato Grosso were studied, from which nine microsatellite loci were genotyped by capillary electrophoresis. The populations showed high levels of genetic diversity, with an average value of 0.830, and high inbreeding values, which suggests a deficit of heterozygotes. The genetic differentiation value between populations was 0.065. The greatest variability, which is moderately structured, was observed within populations. There is a significant inbreeding within the A. humile population in the Cerrado biome of the Brazilian Midwestern region. The A. humile populations are divided into two groups.
