The synthesis and photophysical properties of small gold nanoparticles (NPs, AuNP-[Ru-PFF]) surface functionalized by 5-substituted-1,10-phenanthroline-ligand based Ru(II) complexes are described. Luminescence of the grafted and confined Ru(II) complexes is totally quenched on the gold surface. Nonlinear optical properties were determined via Z-scan measurements in the range 600-1300 nm for both the free Ru(II) complex and the related NPs. In the short wavelength range (around 600 nm) the behaviour switches from that of two-photon absorption (2PA) for the complex to saturable absorption for the NPs. 2PA applications such as optical power limiting or two-photon dioxygen sensitization can be anticipated for these nanoplatforms.

The linear and non-linear optical properties of a family of dumbbell-shaped dinuclear complexes, in which an oligothiophene chain with various numbers of rings (1, 3, and 6) acts as a bridge between two homoleptic tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes, have been fully investigated by using a range of spectroscopic techniques (absorption and luminescence, transient absorption, Raman, and non-linear absorption), together with density functional theory calculations. Our results shed light on the impact of the synergistic collaboration between the electronic structures of the two chemical moieties on the optical properties of these materials. Experiments on the linear optical properties of these compounds indicated that the length of the oligothiophene bridge was critical for luminescent behavior. Indeed, no emission was detected for compounds with long oligothiophene bridges (compounds 3 and 4, with 3 and 6 thiophene rings, respectively), owing to the presence of the (3)π-π* state of the conjugated bridge below the (3)MLCT-emitting states of the end-capping Ru(II) complexes. In contrast, the compound with the shortest bridge (2, one thiophene ring) shows excellent photophysical features. Non-linear optical experiments showed that the investigated compounds were strong non-linear absorbers in wide energy ranges. Indeed, their non-linear absorption was augmented upon increasing the length of the oligothiophene bridge. In particular, the compound with the longest oligothiophene bridge not only showed strong two-photon absorption (TPA) but also noteworthy three-photon-absorption behavior, with a cross-section value of 4×10(-78) cm(6) s(2) at 1450 nm. This characteristic was complemented by the strong excited-state absorption (ESA) that was observed for compounds 3 and 4. Ruthenium alkynyl dendrimers up to second generation in size have been prepared by a divergent route and exploiting Sonogashira coupling. The cubic NLO properties have been examined by wide spectral range fs Z-scan studies, revealing an NLO dendritic effect. The significant increase in NLO properties seen on generation increase is maintained when the coefficients are scaled by the number of metal atoms, the dendrimer molecular weights, or the number of "effective" (delocalizable π) electrons in the dendritic structures., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report remarkable multiphoton absorption properties of DNA intercalating ruthenium complexes: (1) [Ru(phen)(2)dppz](2+); (2) [(11,11'-bidppz)(phen)(4)Ru(2)](4+); (3) [11,11'-bipb(phen)(4)Ru(2)](4+). Two-photon spectra in the range from 460 to 1100 nm were measured using the Z-scan technique. In particular, complex 2 was found to exhibit very strong two- and three-photon absorption properties, which could be an effect of symmetric charge transfer from the ends towards the middle of the conjugated dimeric orbital system. We propose that these molecules could provide a new generation of DNA binding nonlinear chromophores for wide applications in biology and material science. The combination of a large two-photon cross section and strong luminescence quantum yields for the molecules when intercalated makes the compounds uniquely bright and photo-stable probes for two-photon luminescence imaging and also promising as enhanced photosensitizers in two-photon sensitizing applications.

We describe a series of nine new complex salts in which electron-rich Ru(II) or Fe(II) centers are connected via pi-conjugated bridges to six electron-accepting N-methyl-/N-arylpyridinium groups. This work builds upon our previous preliminary studies (Coe , B. J. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 13399-13410; J. Phys. Chem. A 2007, 111, 472-478), with the aims of achieving greatly enhanced NLO properties and also combining large quadratic and cubic effects in potentially redox-switchable molecules. Characterization has involved various techniques, including electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The complexes display intense, visible d --> pi* metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) bands, and their pi --> pi* intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) absorptions in the near-UV region show molar extinction coefficients as high as ca. 3.5 x 10(5) M(-1) cm(-1). Molecular quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) responses beta have been determined by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering at 800 and 1064 nm and also via Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic studies. The directly and indirectly derived beta values are very large, with the Stark-based static first hyperpolarizabilities beta(0) reaching as high as ca. 10(-27) esu, and generally increase on extending the pi-conjugation and enhancing the electron-accepting strength of the ligands. Cubic NLO properties have also been measured by using the Z-scan technique, revealing relatively high two-photon absorption cross sections of up to 2500 GM at 750 nm.

A series of heterobimetallic complexes, [RuCp(C[triple bond]Cpy-4)(P-P)][Re(CO)3(N-N)]+ (P-P = dppf, N-N = bpy 5, Me2bpy 6, tBu2bpy 7, phen 8, tpy 9; P-P = 2PPh3, N-N = bpy 10) have been obtained from Lewis addition between the metalloligands [RuCp(C[triple bond]Cpy-4)(P-P)] (P-P = dppf 1; 2PPh3 2) and solvent-stabilised fac-[Re(CH3CN)(CO)3(N-N)]+. All new complexes 5-10, together with fac-[ReBr(CO)3(tpy)] (3) and fac-[Re(CH3CN)(CO)3(tpy)][PF6] (4), are characterized by solution spectroscopy; 3 and 5-9 are also characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The terpyridine ligands in 3 and 9 are in an unusual 2-bidentate coordination mode with a pendant pyridyl. Electrochemical studies showed successive metal-based oxidations and a ligand-centered reduction in 5-10. Significant oxidation changes are observed at the Ru(II) and Re(I) centers in 5-10 when compared with their respective monometallic components. Cubic nonlinearities of 5-10 determined by the Z-scan technique at 750 nm reveal two-photon absorption that increases significantly on progression from Ru(II) monomeric precursors to heterobimetallics, suggesting NLO enhancement upon heterometallic complex formation.
