Abstract: The quantitative and qualitative change of mortality has been compared between 1790 and 1990. The survey was done in the limited geographical area of a mountain village in central Switzerland. It shows a drop in mortality and infant mortality as well as a dramatic rise in life expectancy. Infectious diseases were partly replaced by the heart and circulatory diseases during these two centuries.
