This is a prefatory note regarding Lowell’s lectures in 1855 in which the subject was English poets. There were twelve lectures in total and most of them were never published due to his view changed with the growth of learning, increased depth and broader visions. Some of the poets that he lectured about were Dante, Shakespeare, Dryden, Kalevala and in one way or another he ties religious attributes to all of them. He references biblical passages throughout his essays which is something that you can see throughout his literary career.

This is an essay that Lowell used in a lecture in 1855 at the Lowell Institute. This never made it to print as he felt that it was too absolute, hasty in composition and far too rapid with intellectual judgments. The essay simply explains that poets and priests are seen as one. The lesson learned from both the past and poetry is that God will send poets out to find grace, love and beauty. A poet will bear witness and hang their poems in the gallery of memory. The poet that he references often throughout this essay is Shakespeare, naming him as being unconscious of his place as a teacher and a profound moralist.

The Editors of the "Atlantic" received so many letters of inquiry concerning the literary remains of the late Mr. Wilbur, mentioned by his colleague and successor Rev. Jeduthun Hitchcock. From these communications some extracts were made and printed, in part, for the gratification of the public. The editors felt it their duty at least to make some effort to satisfy so urgent a demand.
