Soft robotics is projected to have a significant impact on healthcare, industry, and the military to deliver assistance in rehabilitation, daily living activities, repetitive motion tasks, and human performance augmentation. Many attempts have been made for application-specific robotic joints, robots, and exoskeletons using various actuator types, materials, and designs. The progress of creating soft robotic systems can be accelerated if a set of actuators with defined characteristics were developed, similar to conventional robotic actuators, which can be assembled to create desired systems including exoskeletons and end effectors. This work presents the design methodology of such a modular actuator, created with a novel corrugated diaphragm that can apply linear displacement, angular displacement, and force. This modular actuator approach allows for creating various robotic joints by arranging them into different configurations. The modular corrugated diaphragm actuator concept was validated through numerical simulation, fabrication, and testing. Linear displacement, angular displacement, and force characteristics were shown for a single module and in multi-module assemblies. Actuator assemblies that are configured in a serial and parallel manner were investigated to demonstrate the applicability and versatility of the concept of the modular corrugated diaphragm actuator for creating single and multi-degree-of-freedom joints. A series of liquid crystal elastomer-based printed electronic devices has been innovatively crafted through modifying screen-printing patterns. [Display omitted] • A printed liquid crystal elastomer soft actuator with multi-stimuli responsiveness and self-sensing capabilities is achieved. • A printed liquid crystal elastomer near-infrared light array sensor is fabricated. • A series of printed functional devices are fabricated through simple modifications of the printing patterns. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are valuable in soft actuators, sensors and other emerging fields. However, it is still a huge challenge to build high-performance LCE-based functional devices in a simple and fast way to achieve the orderly and patterned integration of multiple functional layers and LCE. Herein, screen-printing technology is used to realize the multi-layer pattern deposition of silver fractal dendrites conductive ink (with excellent Joule heating effect and strain-sensing function) and carbon black conductive ink (with photothermal conversion ability) on the surface of LCE. A series of LCE-based electronic devices are prepared through customized printing patterns. The as-obtained actuator possesses excellent electric actuating performance (bending angle of 102° at 200 mA) and self-sensing function (maximum relative resistance changes of −55.0%), and also exhibits NIR light-driven self-sensing bending actuation behavior (bending angle of 81° at 1.43 W/cm2), which can be used to control the robotic arm. The as-printed NIR light sensing array system can accurately sense the intensity, spot size and position of NIR light, showing good application potential in the field of unmanned aerial vehicle flight safety. The flexible soft actuators of conducting polymers can directly convert electrical stimulus into mechanical motions, which can be used for robotics and biomimetic applications. Herein, an electro-responsive membrane actuator based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate), functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube was fabricated using solution casting method with poly(vinyl alcohol) as a base intermediate polymer membrane. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) was evenly ornamented onto the single-walled carbon nanotube/poly(vinyl alcohol) membrane (single-walled carbon nanotube/ poly(vinyl alcohol)/ poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate)) surfaces through dip coating and verified by scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The desirable bending response of the fabricated single-walled carbon nanotube/ poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) membrane with time at different voltages and generated tip force makes it a promising material as a new-generation conductive polymer-based soft actuator. A permutation of the electrical conductivity, more surface area, and admirable electromechanical properties of the single-walled carbon nanotube/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) components consequences in the composite electrode exhibited excellent actuation performance compared to the ionic polymer-metal composite actuators with Pt electrodes surface. Soft contraction actuators are becoming important elements particularly for human-friendly robotic applications. However, it is challenging to achieve both a large operating distance while generating practical force. Hence, we present a new soft contraction actuator capable of realizing a high ratio contraction by pneumatic power. It can be easily fabricated using soft materials, including rubber tubes, one-way extensible cloth, and inextensible wire. Its initial shape is tubular but it can curve and coil to a helix shape owing to its different extensibilities on two sides when pressurized. A maximum contraction ratio of 78% and a 23 N contraction force can be achieved with an 11.6 mm initial outer diameter tube under 0.3 MPa. The effect of the tilt angle of a one-way extensible cloth on the helical shape is investigated, and a mathematical model illustrating the relationship between the contraction ratio and force is derived. Our experimental results suggest that this helical actuator has a much higher contraction ratio than a McKibben actuator under the same conditions. Finally, we discuss the potential application of the proposed actuator to a wearable device, i.e., for assisting the dorsiflexion of an ankle joint requiring a wide range of motion. This work presents a novel soft actuator with a 3D-printed elastic body based on a fused-deposition-modeling technique and with tendon actuation based on flexible shafts, which allow push, pull, and twist torque transmissions. The combination of the soft body and flexible shaft furnishes an easy-making, modular and functional unit that possesses softness and enables three degrees of freedom. We derive the kinematics and statics of the actuator based on the assumption of piecewise constant curvature, and identify the parameters experimentally. To understand the performance of the soft actuator in different design and fabrication settings, extensive experiments are performed to compare different shapes of cross sections, infill densities, infill patterns, dentation structures and moment arms in terms of generating forces under the same pulling forces. In addition, experimental validations are performed to characterize other properties such as workspace, hysteresis, pushing force, transmitted torque, and tip force under both bending and twisting. Finally, three potential applications, i.e., a soft robotic hand, a multisegment continuum robot, and a miniaturized drilling device, are prototyped and presented experimentally where the flexibility endowed by the shafts is demonstrated and highlighted. The output force of high-power electrostatic motors is defined by an internal electric field, and a strong electric field can cause air discharge unless the motors are operated within a dielectric liquid. Previous studies evaluated how the viscosity of a dielectric liquid can impact the output performance of a motor. While the viscous drag resistance increases with viscosity, the degradation of the output force was found to be negligible. However, the reason for this behavior was not clarified in those studies. This work clarifies the reason for the output behavior through numerical simulations and experiments. In the simulation, motion trajectories and motor output were analyzed for different operation speeds in different liquid viscosities. The results revealed that the existence of peaks in the force characteristics of the motor is the key to understanding a motor's unique behavior within a viscous liquid. In a viscous liquid, the trajectories change such that the peak force is generated to compensate for the drag resistance. The simulations also revealed that the behavior only appears in one of the two types tested in the simulation, which differ in the smoothness of their force characteristics. The simulation results were verified in experiments. The experimental results reconfirmed the results of previous studies, and verified the findings of the simulations of this work. Behavioral diversity is an essential feature of living systems, enabling them to exhibit adaptive behavior in hostile and dynamically changing environments. However, traditional engineering approaches strive to avoid, or suppress, the behavioral diversity in artificial systems to achieve high performance in specific environments for given tasks. The goals of this research include understanding how living systems exhibit behavioral diversity and using these findings to build lifelike robots that exhibit truly adaptive behaviors. To this end, we have focused on one of the most primitive forms of intelligence concerning behavioral diversity, namely, a plasmodium of true slime mold. The plasmodium is a large amoeba-like unicellular organism that does not possess any nervous system or specialized organs. However, it exhibits versatile spatiotemporal oscillatory patterns and switches spontaneously between these. Inspired by the plasmodium, we built a mathematical model that exhibits versatile oscillatory patterns and spontaneously transitions between these patterns. This model demonstrates that, in contrast to coupled nonlinear oscillators with a well-designed complex diffusion network, physically interacting mechanosensory oscillators are capable of generating versatile oscillatory patterns without changing any parameters. An electro-conjugate fluid (ECF) is a type of dielectric and functional fluid that generates a powerful jet flow when subjected to high DC voltage. Although a high voltage is needed to generate the jet flow, the current is quite low at several microamperes, resulting in a total power consumption of several milliwatts. Using this smart fluid, we can develop micro fluid-driven mechanical components without any bulky pumps. Also, it is clarified that the power density of the ECF jet is higher when the electrode pair is miniaturized; therefore, it is suitable for micro actuators. Here, we propose and fabricate three types of soft actuators with an antagonistic configuration: (i) micro artificial muscle cells, (ii) a McKibben-type micro artificial muscle actuator using the ECF effect and (iii) a micro finger actuator with two chambers to bend. The actuators basically consist of a silicone rubber tube covered with a fiber sleeve and a micro pressure source using the ECF effect. Next, we apply and integrate these actuators into a micro robot hand, driven with ECF jets. The driving characteristics of the micro artificial muscle actuator and the integrated micro ECF hand with ECF fingers were fabricated and experimentally investigated. Robots manipulated by humans are being aggressively researched and developed. Such robots have requirements such as a large generative force, high-speed response, good controllability, high safety, low friction and backdriveability. We focused on backdriveability and created a prototype for a novel linear actuator with a new structure that includes an electrorheological (ER) gel, which is a recently designed functional material. The device is an all-purpose actuator that satisfies the demands for application in a human-coexistence welfare robot, such as power-assist systems. This paper presents the original plan for the linear actuator, shows the actuator as currently manufactured and presents the basic characteristics of the actuator as investigated experimentally. We obtained larger force from the linear actuator than the initial target. Additionally, the linear actuator shows possibilities of further improvement of the force-weight ratio by an increase of the ER gel structures. With regard to stabilizing the response of the linear actuator, spring elements contributed to its improvement. A bucky gel actuator is a novel electro-active polymer (EAP), which is a low-voltage-driven dry soft actuator. In addition, the bucky gel device generates electromotive force when bending and then it can also be used as a sensor. Its device has a bimorph structure with polymer-supported bucky gel electrodes and a polymer-supported ionic gel electrolyte. It can be fabricated by layer-by-layer casting to easily form any shape. In this paper, we demonstrate an automatic fabrication method of bucky gel devices based on a printing method. By using a dispensing machine, we construct the printing system and the manual forming process is replaced with automatic printing. We are studying the robotic application of ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC). The characteristics of IPMC greatly depend on the type of counterions, and it is considered that the performance of the actuators can be improved by combining the actuators with several types of counterions and applying an integrated control. IPMC also has a sensor function, as the IPMC film generates an electromotive force when it is deformed. It has the possibility to be integrated into an IPMC actuator with soft actuation. In this paper, we consider an integrated design of an IPMC actuator/sensor, and investigate control of the combined IPMC actuators using H∞ control and the construction of an IPMC sensor system. Exploiting natural dynamics for bipedal locomotion, or passive walking, is gaining interest because of its energy efficiency. However, the natural trajectories of a passive walker are fixed during the design, thus limiting its mobility. A possible solution to this problem is creating a ‘semi-passive walker’ equipped with actuators with adaptable compliance, which allows the natural dynamics to be changed according to the situation. This paper proposes a compliance controller a strategy for continuously changing the compliance in such a way as to adapt the natural motion of the system to a desired trajectory. This opens up the possibility of following a range of different trajectories with a relatively low energy consumption. The idea is to fit the controllable actuator compliance to the ‘natural’ compliance of the desired trajectory, and combine that with trajectory tracking control. This strategy was implemented and tested on a 1-DOF pendulum setup actuated by an antagonistic pair of pleated pneumatic artificial muscles. Both simulations and measurements show that the proposed strategy for choosing actuator compliance can significantly reduce the amount of control activity and energy consumption without harming tracking precision. We are developing an artificial muscle linear actuator using ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC)—electro-active polymers that bend in response to electric stimuli—and the goal of our study is applying the actuator to robotic applications, especially to a biped walking robot. In this paper, we will describe the structure of the actuator and an empirical model of the actuator which has two inputs and one output, and whose parameters are identified from input-output data. Based on the empirical model, basic experiments and position control of the linear actuator are demonstrated. Then, we consider walking control of a small-sized biped walking robot. In the application we assume that the developed actuators are connected both in series and in parallel to a joint of the walking robot so that the actuators supply enough torque to the robot, and that they are stretched and compressed enough. It is shown throughout simulations that the biped walking robot with the actuators can walk on level ground with a period synchronized with the period of the input signal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As promising candidates in the field of artificial muscles, ionic‐polymer–metal composites (IPMCs) still cannot simultaneously provide large deformations and fast responses, which has limited their practical applications. In this study, to overcome this issue, a Nafion‐based IPMC with high‐quality metal electrodes is fabricated via novel isopropanol‐assisted electroless plating. The IPMC exhibits a large tip displacement (35.3 mm, 102.3°) under a low direct‐current driving voltage and ultrafast response (>10 Hz) under an alternating‐current (AC) voltage. Furthermore, the simultaneous integration of a large deformation and fast response can be achieved by the IPMC under a high‐frequency (19 Hz) AC voltage, where the largest bending amplitude is 5.9 mm and the highest bending speed reaches 224.2 mm s−1 (596.2° s−1). Additionally, the lightweight IPMC exhibits a decent load capacity and can lift objects 20 times heavier. The outstanding performances of the Nafion IPMC are demonstrated by mimicking biological motions such as petal opening/closing, tendril coiling/uncoiling, and high‐frequency wing flapping. This study paves the way for the fabrication of lightweight actuators with simultaneous large displacements and fast responses for promising applications in biomedical devices and bioinspired robotics. Recently, soft materials such as silicone elastomers are widely used in soft robotics due to their high flexibility and safe physical interaction with humans. Focusing on three aspects— highly elastic materials, sacrificial materials, and actuation units , we aim to develop an additive manufacturing strategy that allows the fabrication of highly elastic soft structures more efficiently. First, silicone thinner is used to tailor the mechanical properties of the soft silicone elastomer. We found out that adding 20% volume thinner to the silicone improved the ultimate tensile elongation of 3D printed silicone samples upto 1260%, which is the highest among all the 3D printed soft materials previously reported. However, in a cyclic tensile test, this strain is not achieved; instead, the maximum strain was 600%. Second, carbohydrate glasses are introduced as sacrificial materials for 3D printing silicone with hollow channels. Few configurations of pneumatic and hydraulic actuators are developed by forming channels in the silicone elastomer via 3D printed sacrificial carbohydrate structures and subsequently dissolving. The 3D printed structures actuated successfully to get morphed shapes, which showed that our method is effective for manufacturing of functional soft robotic structures.
