A regional field survey of a total of 109 pairs of soil and rice samples was conducted to evaluate the health risks posed by heavy metals in the Jin-Qu Basin, China. The studied soils are characterized by acid (pH in mean level of 5.5), carbon rich (soil organic matter in mean of 33.6 g kg -1 ) and mainly contaminated by Cd (42.2% samples exceeded the standard value of 0.3 mg kg -1 (GB15618-2018)). The spatial distributions of Cd, Pb and Zn exhibited similar geographic trends. 34% and 30% of the rice samples containing Cd and Pb exceeded the threshold value of 0.2 mg kg -1 (GB2762-2017), respectively. The risk estimation of dietary intake had a target hazard quotient value of Cd of 0.918 and a hazard index value for rice consumption of 2.141. Totally, Cd and Pb were found to be the main components contributing to the potential health risks posed by non-carcinogenic effects for local inhabitants.

This article describes a data-driven approach to flood risk exposure evaluation and route delineation during heavy rainfall events. We cross-referenced diverse geospatial and drainage infrastructure datasets with the street network of Hoboken to uncover the factors that increase flood risk. Elevation, slope, precipitation level, imperviousness, and distance to the drainage system's outlets were the most significant predictors to link flooding. We used the link flood risk patterns found in the data to train a reinforcement learning model that generates routes that avoid flood-prone areas. We benchmarked the route assistance model with shortest path and most reliable path algorithms, demonstrating our model has balanced path length and path reliability. We provided the flood risk model outputs at the link-level, which city authorities can use to plan road closures ahead of heavy precipitation events. The major portion of daily dietary nitrate that enters the human body is derived from vegetable consumption. High concentration of nitrate in edible parts of vegetables causes a variety of poisonings, anemia in children and production of carcinogen nitrosamine in adults. To investigate the concentration of nitrate in potatoes and onions grown in Kermanshah province, sampling was carried out from the fields located in different counties at the time of harvest in the summer and autumn of 2019. After washing, drying, grinding, and extracting the samples, the nitrate concentrations were determined with a spectrophotometry method. The results showed that the mean nitrate concentration in potato and onion samples (94.56 and 74.62 mg kg-1 FW, respectively) of all regions was significantly lower than the World Health Organization standard limit (250 and 1000 mg kg-1 FW, respectively). The highest concentration of nitrate in potato (153.70 mg kg-1 FW) and onion (98.02 mg kg-1 FW) was observed in samples from the Qasr-e-Shirin and Kermanshah, respectively. The non-cancer hazard quotient (HQ) of nitrate via potato and onion consumption was below 1 for all age receptor groups. Although, it does not seem to be a particular problem with consuming these vegetables; however, the evaluation of nitrate concentration in potato and onion samples is recommended at regular time intervals. As an environmental endocrine disruptor, atrazine (ATR) can produce serious health damage to humans. This study aimed to assess the exposure and health risks associated with ATR among Chinese adults by analyzing data on ATR concentrations in various environmental media across China. Literatures were retrieved from 5 databases and finally identified 65 eligible studies. The concentrations of ATR in environmental media ranged from 0 to 0.12 mg/kg. The average daily doses (ADD) of ATR for Chinese males and females were estimated at 2.58 × 10−5 mg/kg/d and 2.53 × 10−5 mg/kg/d, respectively. The ADD values did not exceed the reference dose −0.035 mg/kg/d. Sensitivity analysis revealed that body weight and ATR concentrations in various food items such as vegetables, grains, and fruits, along with factors like drinking water intake rate, were the primary influencing factors. Furthermore, the hazard index (HI) values were less than 1 and over 0.32% of cancer risk (CR) values were higher than 10−4, indicating that exposure to ATR could pose a potential risk. The HI and CR values did not exhibit statistically significant differences across genders or among various age groups. This study illustrated that exposed to ATR can pose potential risk to Chinese adults health and dietary intake (including drinking water, and food) was the major pathway by which most humans are exposed to ATR. The contamination of water due to heavy metals (HMs) is a big concern for humankind; particularly in developing countries. This research is a systematic review, conducted by searching google scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, Springer, and Scopus databases for related published papers from 2010 to July 2021, resulting in including 40 articles. Among the analyzed HMs in the presented review, the average content of Cr, Pb, Ba, Al, As, Zn, and Cd exceeded the permissible limits suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) and 1,053 Iranian standards. Also, the rank order of Hazard Quotient (HQ) of HMs was defined as Cd>As>Cr>Pb>Li for children which means Cd has the highest non-carcinogenic risk and Li has the least. This verifies to the current order As>Cr>Pb>Fe=Zn=Cu>Cd for adults. The corresponded values of HQ and Hazard Index (HI) in most cities and villages were investigated and the results indicated a lower than 1 value, which means consumers are not at non-carcinogenic risk (HQ). Carcinogenic risk (CR) of As in the adult and children consumers in most of the samples (58.82% of samples for both groups) were investigated too, and it was more than>1.00E-04 value, which determines that consumers are at significant CR. This paper reviews the published terminology, mathematical models, and the possible approaches used to characterise the risk of foodborne chemical hazards, particularly pesticides, metals, mycotoxins, acrylamide, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results confirmed the wide variability of the nomenclature used, e.g., 28 different ways of referencing exposure, 13 of cancer risk, or 9 of slope factor. On the other hand, a total of 16 equations were identified to formulate all the risk characterisation parameters of interest. Therefore, the present study proposes a terminology and formulation for some risk characterisation parameters based on the guidelines of international organisations and the literature review. The mathematical model used for non-genotoxic hazards is a ratio in all cases. However, the authors used the probability of cancer or different ratios, such as the margin of exposure (MOE) for genotoxic hazards. For each effect studied per hazard, the non-genotoxic effect was mostly studied in pesticides (79.73%), the genotoxic effect was mostly studied in PAHs (71.15%), and both effects were mainly studied in metals (59.4%). The authors of the works reviewed generally opted for a deterministic approach, although most of those who assessed the risk for mycotoxins or the ratio and risk for acrylamide used the probabilistic approach. Background: Admission to a neurological intensive care unit (Neuro-ICU) can increase risk for depressive and anxiety symptoms for both patients and caregivers. To better understand the long-term mental health impact of a Neuro-ICU admission, we examined the dyadic interdependence between depression and anxiety at Neuro-ICU admission with 3-month quality of life (QoL) for patients and caregivers in a longitudinal, observational cohort study. Method: We assessed depressive and anxiety symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; HADS) reported by neurologically intact patients (n = 72) and their caregivers (n = 72) within 2 weeks of Neuro-ICU admission (baseline) and 3-months post-discharge (follow-up). We examined the longitudinal association between dyadic depression and anxiety at Neuro-ICU admission and 3-month QoL (World Health Organization; QOL-BREF) across four domains (Physical, Psychological, Social relationships, and Environmental QoL) in separate actor-partner interdependence models (APIM) for patients and caregivers. Results: In the overall models, patients' own baseline depression levels were negatively associated with their own 3-month QoL in all domains (β = − 0.53 to − 0.64, p < 0.001), and for caregivers, only in the psychological (β = − 0.73, p <.001) and social relationships (β = − 0.56, p <.001) domains. No actor effects were found for one's own baseline anxiety impacting one's own 3-month QoL. Partner effects for one's own depression were significant for caregivers on patients' 3-month psychological (β = − 0.26, p <.02) and environmental (β = − 0.29, p <.03) QoL, as well as for patients on caregiver's 3-month psychological QoL (β = 0.25, p <.02). No partner effects were significant in association with baseline anxiety and 3-month QoL in both patients and caregivers. Conclusion: Neuro-ICU patients' and caregivers' baseline depression has significant negative impacts on their own long-term QoL. Caregivers demonstrate significant negative impacts on patient long-term QoL in domains related to emotional distress and caregiver burden. Early identification of mental health symptoms, especially depression, during Neuro-ICU admission may provide an intervention opportunity to improve QoL post-discharge for both dyad members. A group of diseases resulting from the abnormal aggregation of amyloid fibrils, mainly in the extracellular spaces of tissues, is known collectively as amyloidosis. Clinical presentations of gastrointestinal (GI) amyloidosis are mainly GI bleeding, malabsorption, protein-losing enteropathy, and dysmotility. Here, we describe an 87-year-old woman presenting with acute onset of sharp, constant, and non-radiating epigastric pain that was accompanied by nausea or vomiting. After a thorough investigation, we finally found an isolated jejunojejunal intussusception by laparotomy. The pathological study revealed massive small bowel involvement by amyloidosis in immunostaining. To our knowledge, this is the first report of small intestinal obstruction resulting from intussusception due to intraluminal amyloid polypoid nodules, as the first presentation of light-chain amyloidosis. Simple Summary: The RNA polymerase III complex incorporates two forms of subunit RPC7: RPC7α, which is highly abundant during early development, and RPC7β, the constitutive form of RPC7 in most tissues. Here, we investigate the gene regulatory mechanisms that give rise to high RPC7α levels in cancer, which is linked with unfavorable outcomes in patients. Our survey points to a gene-internal regulatory element and identifies a multitude of transcription factors that contribute to RPC7α abundance, altogether establishing a combinatorial model for Pol III identity in cancer. RNA polymerase III (Pol III) subunit RPC7α, which is encoded by POLR3G in humans, has been linked to both tumor growth and metastasis. Accordantly, high POLR3G expression is a negative prognostic factor in multiple cancer subtypes. To date, the mechanisms underlying POLR3G upregulation have remained poorly defined. We performed a large-scale genomic survey of mRNA and chromatin signatures to predict drivers of POLR3G expression in cancer. Our survey uncovers positive determinants of POLR3G expression, including a gene-internal super-enhancer bound with multiple transcription factors (TFs) that promote POLR3G expression, as well as negative determinants that include gene-internal DNA methylation, retinoic-acid induced differentiation, and MXD4-mediated disruption of POLR3G expression. We show that novel TFs identified in our survey, including ZNF131 and ZNF207, functionally enhance POLR3G expression, whereas MXD4 likely obstructs MYC-driven expression of POLR3G and other growth-related genes. Integration of chromatin architecture and gene regulatory signatures identifies additional factors, including histone demethylase KDM5B, as likely influencers of POLR3G gene activity. Taken together, our findings support a model in which POLR3G expression is determined with multiple factors and dynamic regulatory programs, expanding our understanding of the circuitry underlying POLR3G upregulation and downstream consequences in cancer. Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is one of the typical dental genetic diseases in human. It can occur isolatedly or as part of a syndrome. Previous reports have mainly clarified the types and mechanisms of nonsyndromic AI. This review aimed to compare the phenotypic differences among the hereditary enamel defects with or without syndromes and their underlying pathogenic genes. We searched the articles in PubMed with different strategies or keywords including but not limited to amelogenesis imperfecta, enamel defects, hypoplastic/hypomaturation/hypocalcified, syndrome, or specific syndrome name. The articles with detailed clinical information about the enamel and other phenotypes and clear genetic background were used for the analysis. We totally summarized and compared enamel phenotypes of 18 nonsyndromic AI with 17 causative genes and 19 syndromic AI with 26 causative genes. According to the clinical features, radiographic or ultrastructural changes in enamel, the enamel defects were basically divided into hypoplastic and hypomineralized (hypomaturated and hypocalcified) and presented a higher heterogeneity which were closely related to the involved pathogenic genes, types of mutation, hereditary pattern, X chromosome inactivation, incomplete penetrance, and other mechanisms.The gene‐specific enamel phenotypes could be an important indicator for diagnosing nonsyndromic and syndromic AI. Mercury (Hg) has always been a research hot spot because of its high toxicity. This study conducted in farmland near rare earth mining area and traffic facilities, which considered multiple pollution sources innovatively. It not only analyzed Hg spatial characteristics using inverse distance weighting and self-organizing map (SOM), but also assessed its pollution risk by potential ecological risk index (Er) as well as geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and identified the pollution sources with positive matrix factorization. The results showed that there was no heavy Hg pollution in most farmland, while a few sampling sites with Hg pollution were close to highway, railway station and petrol station in Xinfeng or in the farmland of Anyuan, which were divided into the cluster with highest Hg concentration in SOM. The vehicle exhaust emission and pesticide as well as fertilizer additions significantly contributed to the local Hg pollution. Besides, there was moderate pollution and high ecological risk in Anyuan assessed by Igeo and Er, respectively. In contrast, Xinfeng had the moderate and considerable ecological risks in a larger scale. The enriched Hg might harmed not only the nearby ecological environment, but also the human health when it entered human body through food chain. The three factors that contributed to mercury concentration in this area according to positive matrix factorization were natural source, traffic source and agricultural source, respectively. Understanding the human health risks posed by heavy metal(loid)s in atmospheric particulate matter is critical, especially for students on congested college campuses. For this investigation, atmospheric dustfall samples were obtained from university campuses in Wuhan City. The concentration of Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ni, As, Cr, Co, Ba, Sb, Cd, and V were determined. Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, As, and Sb levels were higher than the Hubei Province soil background values. The particle morphology and mineralogy results show that atmospheric dustfall particles were spherical primarily and needle-like, and the main mineral composition of atmospheric dustfall was carbonate and silicate. The spatial distribution indicated that the heavy metal(loid)s showed apparent spatial heterogeneity. According to the pollution assessment results, Cd and Sb were the principal pollutants in Wuhan University's atmospheric dustfall and caused severe ecological risks to the environment. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk values for both male and female college students were within the safe range, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk values for male and female college students were (0.20, 0.35) and (2.46 × 10–6, 2.72 × 10–6), respectively, and the school's teachers and students can be adequately protected. When compared to urban air pollution, college pollution is lower and may be regarded as a background point for pollution, which is helpful for monitoring, management, and prevention of urban air pollution. Background: There is increasing evidence that diagnostic salivary tests measuring inflammatory biomarkers are being developed to assess inflammatory status for early detection, prevention, and progression of periodontal disease. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate and identify the salivary biomarker that can predict the inflammatory status of periodontal disease. Methods: A total of 36 patients (28 women and 8 men) with an average age of 57 years were investigated. Unstimulated saliva was collected from the recruited subjects and analyzed using SillHa, a saliva-testing device that measures bacteria count, saliva buffer capacity, acidity, leukocyte esterase, protein, and ammonia. Periodontal parameters were then obtained by clinical examination and initial periodontal therapy was performed. Data obtained with SillHa were compared with clinical periodontal parameters at baseline, re-examination (three months from baseline), and final examination (six months from re-examination). Results: Leukocyte esterase activity in saliva measured by SillHa; BOP and PCR measured by clinical examination showed a significant difference between baseline and final examination and between re-examination and final examination. Patients in the lower median group (group 1) had a significant difference in leukocyte esterase activity between baseline and final examination and re-examination and final examination. In addition, patients in Group 1 had significantly lower BOP between baseline and final examination. While patients in the higher median group (group 2) showed a modest decrease in leukocyte esterase activity, which was significant only between baseline and final examination, no significant changes were observed concerning BOP. Furthermore, the associated systemic disease was observed in 30% and 81.2% of group 1 and 2 patients, respectively. Conclusion: The results suggest that leukocyte esterase activity in saliva measured by SillHa could serve as a reliable diagnostic marker for monitoring inflammatory status in periodontal disease. The aim of this work was to assess the origins, mobility, bioavailability and potential health risks of V, Cr, Co, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Sn and Sb, which are not sufficiently studied in the terrestrial environment of Egypt. This has been carried out by employing a combination of chemical fractionation, plants uptake, mathematical modeling and risk assessment approaches on a wide range of soils and plants sampled from industrial, urban and agricultural locations across Egypt. The contents of As, Cd, Sn and Sb were elevated in the soils of some urban and industrial locations within Cairo, although their soil geo-accumulation (Igeo) indices remained ≤ 2, indicating only moderate contamination. Selenium showed moderate to heavy contamination levels (Igeo up to 4.7) in all sampling locations, and Sb was highly elevated (Igeo = 7.1; extreme contamination) in one industrial location. Therefore, Se was the most important contributor to the pollution load followed by Sb and Cd. Both principle component analysis (of total content) and geochemical fractionation (by sequential extraction) suggested that V, Cr and Co are mostly of geogenic origin, while Se and Sb contents appear to be highly influenced by anthropogenic inputs. The most mobile and bioavailable element was Cd with a large non-residual fraction in all soils (76% of total Cd). The bio-concentration factors of Cd in leafy and fruiting plants were 50 times larger than other elements (except Mo) indicating preferential systematic plant uptake of Cd. Risk assessment models showed an overall low noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to the population of Egypt due to the studied elements with only a few anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cigarettes are known as the most popular tobacco in the world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals in smoked and non-smoked cigarette butts (CBs) from ten cigarette brands (including five Iranian brands) and human health risk assessment associated with inhalation exposure. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used for heavy metals measurement after CBs digestion. The results showed that the highest concentrations of heavy metals in non-smoked and smoked cigarette butts are related to Pb (0.63 ± 0.21 µg/g) and Ni (0.81 ± 1.48 µg/g), respectively. The concentration of all heavy metals in smoked CBs is significantly higher than in non-smoked. According to the results, Ni and Cd elements in 60% of Iranian brands and 80% of other brands have HI > 1, which indicates a potential non-carcinogenic risk for consumers. Also, the carcinogenic risk of Cr in all brands is higher than 1.00E-4, which indicates the carcinogenic risk of the consumer in case of continuous exposure to cigarette smoke. Heavy metals in CBs can have potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects on the health of smokers exposed to inhalation. Objective: The increasing exposure to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), due to their wide range of applications, has led to the need for thorough understanding of their biodistribution, following exposure. The objective of this paper is to develop a PBK model in order to study the clearance, retention and translocation of inhaled gold nanoparticles in rats, providing a basis for the understanding of the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination (ADME) mechanisms of AuNPs in various organs. Materials and methods: A rat PBK computational model was developed, connected to a detailed respiratory model, including the olfactory, tracheobronchial, and alveolar regions. This model was coupled with a Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model to appropriately simulate the exposure to AuNPs. Three existing in vivo experimental datasets from scientific literature for the biodistribution of inhaled AuNPs for different AuNP sizes and exposure scenarios were utilized for model calibration and validation. Results and Discussion: The model was calibrated using two individual datasets for nose only inhaled and intratracheally instilled AuNPs, while an independent dataset for nose only inhaled AuNPs was used as external validation. The overall fitting over the three datasets was proved acceptable as shown by the relevant statistical metrics. The influence of several physiological parameters is also studied via a sensitivity analysis, providing useful insights into the mechanisms of NP pharmacokinetics. The key aspects of the inhaled AuNPs biodistribution are discussed, revealing the key mechanisms for the AuNPs absorption routes, the AuNP uptake by secondary organs and the influence of the AuNP size on the translocation from the lungs to blood circulation. Conclusions: The model results together with the model sensitivity analysis clarified the key mechanisms for the inhaled AuNPs biodistribution to secondary organs. It was observed that nose-only inhaled AuNPs of smaller size can enter the blood circulation through secondary routes, such as absorption through the gastrointestinal (GI) lumen, showing that such translocations should not be underestimated in biodistribution modelling. Finally, the computational framework presented in this study can be used as a basis for a more wide investigation of inhaled nanoparticles biodistribution, including interspecies extrapolation of the resulting PBK model for the inhalation and subsequent biodistribution of AuNPs in humans. Previous research suggests that shared social identification and expected support from others can reduce the extent to which attendees of mass events perceive that others pose health risks. This study evaluated the social identity processes associated with perceived risk at UK pilot sporting events held during COVID‐19, including the government Events Research Programme. An online survey (N = 2029) measured attendee perceptions that other spectators adhered to safety measures, shared social identity with other attendees, expectations that others would provide support, and the perceived risk of germ spread from other attendees. Results indicate that for football attendees, seeing others adhering to COVID‐19 safety measures was associated with lower perceived risk and this was partially mediated via increased shared social identity and expected support. However, the sequential mediations were non‐significant for rugby and horse racing events. The decreased perceived risk for football and rugby attendees highlights the importance of understanding social identity processes at mass events to increase safety. The non‐significant associations between shared social identity and perceived risk and between expected support and perceived risk for both the rugby and the horse racing highlights the need to further research risk perceptions across a range of mass event contexts. Background: Cereals are the most staple foods in human diet and the main components of the daily diet. This work was designed to determine the level of essential and non - essential elements, the in vitro bioavailability, interrelationship, and associated health risk in consumed cereal grains in Nigeria to assess their safety and wholesomeness. Methods: The contents of phytate, oxalate, and some major -, trace - and potentially toxic elements were determined in 36 samples of barley, maize, millet, rice, sorghum, and wheat marketed in Nigeria. Results: The data showed variable significant (p<0.05) levels of elements, phytate, and oxalate in the cereals but they were below European commission maximum permissible limits. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of elements in the cereals were all below maximum permissible limits set by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI) values, though higher in children than adults, were less than one except in wheat and sorghum. The incremental lifetime Cancer Risk (CR) and Total Cancer Risk (TCR) values were below the threshold limit. Conclusion: This study revealed that barley, maize, millet, rice, sorghum, and wheat available in Nigeria markets contain varying quantities of essential elements, potentially toxic elements, and antinutrients. Objective: Sleep disorders are associated with many health problems including anxiety, depression and coronary artery disease (CAD). This study investigated the prevalence, predictors and health impacts of insomnia and hypersomnia in southeastern Iran as well as the five-year incidence rate (IR) of these sleep disorders. Method: The present study was a cross-sectional, single-stage, cluster sampling study examining nine CAD risk factors (KERCADR study phase two), including sleep disorders, carried out in Kerman on 9997 participants, 15 to 80 years old. Medical examination along with demographic, sleep status, Physical activity level (GPAQ), anxiety and depression status (Beck Inventories) were assessed and fasting blood sample was taken for blood glucose and lipids analysis. STATA v15 software was used for data analysis using survey data analysis package and a univariable survey logistic regression model. Results: From 9997 participants, 59.4% were female. 45.3% of the participants were suffering from insomnia and hypersomnia, which was 15% more than the phase 1 prevalence (P < 0.001). Participants with insomnia had higher chance of being anxious, but participants with hypersomnia had higher chance of being depressed, be a cigarette smoker, opium user, and sedentary (P < 0.001). In regards to marital status, prevalence of hypersomnia was as follows in ascending order of prevalence: singles > married > widowed > divorced. While the IR of insomnia was higher in females, males had higher IR of hypersomnia. In addition, the IR of both sleep disorders was higher in participants with Low Physical Activity (LPA). Conclusion: The results showed high current prevalence and increasing trends of sleep disorders in the past five years. Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes approximately 1% of municipal solid waste (MSW), which is related to the lack of efficient separate collection schemes co-disposed with MSW in many countries worldwide. In this research, the effect of HHW diversion on leachate quality and consequent reduction in risks to the environment and human health was investigated. In this regard, physicochemical parameters of MSW leachate samples with and without hazardous fraction were characterized. Next, leachate pollution index (LPI) and associated risks were assessed. The results showed that the source separation of HHW decreases the LPI value by 13.48% and improves the potential of leachate for biological treatment, leading to a reduction in leachate treatment costs and complexity. Based on risk assessment results, HHW diversion could lower cancer risks of organic compounds and heavy metals to acceptable levels for adults and children. Moreover, by the source-separating of HHW, hazard indices for aquatic and terrestrial bioassays reduced by 41.5 and 36%, respectively. The potential health risk of heavy metals (HMs) in campus dust may threaten the health of thousands of students, teachers, and their families in Wuhan, the university cluster in Central China every day. In this research, the pollution characteristics and health risk with HMs was the first time presented in campus dust from the canteen, playground, dormitory, and school gate to date. The average HMs concentration in campus dusts ranked Pb (83.5 mg kg−1) > Cu (70.2 mg kg−1) > Zn (47.2 mg kg−1) > Cr (46.0 mg kg−1) > Ni (22.7 mg kg−1) > As (15.2 mg kg−1) > Cd (3.38 mg kg−1). The HMs would more likely to accumulate in dormitory dust and canteen dust. In the downtown area, Zn, As, and Cd had been preliminarily identified from fossil fuel combustion and natural geochemical processes. Cu and Pb would source from cooking and traffic transportation. Ni and Cr would likely reflect the contributions of natural soil weathering. No significant non-carcinogenic health risks were found to students or teachers from campus dust. Their children would more likely to exposure health risks when eating in the canteen, playing on the playground, or walking around the school gate. Background: Nitrate content is one of the most critical factors to determine the quality of vegetables, and its permissible limits in food chain is important to the human health. Due to the harmful effects of nitrate, many studies have been conducted on its accumulation in crops in recent years. This study assessed the nitrate concentrations in some edible vegetables and the associated health risks. Methods: In this descriptive study, raw agricultural produce, such as leafy vegetables, tubers, cucurbits, kitchen produce and edible grains were collected in the winter and summer. The samples were then transferred to a laboratory by maintaining the temperature-controlled supply chain. After preparing the samples, the nitrate content was determined in each, using an Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometric (UV/Vis) unit. The data were analyzed statistically on SPSS v. 26. Results: The mean nitrate contents in leafy and kitchen produce, grains, and tuber vegetables were approximately 130, 48, 101, and 61ppm, respectively. The average nitrate content in the winter was around 38ppm and in the summer about 44 ppm. The highest nitrate content was documented in spinach (1100.15 ppm) and the lowest in tomatos (20.97 ppm). Conclusion: The results indicated that the highest nitrate content was found in leafy produce grown in northern Iran. The highest health risk for non-carcinogenic conditions was likely to be linked to the consumption of spinach and other edible vegetables, wheat, rice, and potatoes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background: Prophylaxis of HBV recurrence is critical after liver transplantation in HBV patients. Despite new prophylactic schemes, most European LT centres persist on a conservative approach combining hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) and nucleos(t)ides analogues (NA). Aim: This setting prompted the European Liver Intestine Transplantation Association (ELITA) to look for a consensus on the prevention of HBV recurrence. Methods: Based on a 4‐round Delphi process, ELITA investigated 16 research questions and established 50 recommendations. Results: Prophylaxis should be driven according to 3 simplified risk groups: Low and high virological risk patients, with undetectable and detectable HBV DNA pre‐LT, respectively, and special populations (HDV, HCC, poorly adherent patients). In low‐risk patients, short‐term (4 weeks) combination of third‐generation NA+ HBIG, or third generation NA monotherapy can be considered as prophylactic options. In high‐risk patients, HBIG can be discontinued once HBV DNA undetectable. Combined therapy for 1 year is advised. HBV‐HCC patients should be treated according to their virological risk. In HDV/HBV patients, indefinite dual prophylaxis remains the gold standard. Full withdrawal of HBV prophylaxis following or not HBV vaccination should only be attempted in the setting of clinical trials. Organs from HBsAg+ve donors may be considered after assessment of risks, benefits, and patient consent. They should not be used if HDV is present. In poorly adherent patients, dual long‐term prophylaxis is recommended. Budget impact analysis should be taken into account to drive prophylactic regimen. Environmental and human health risk analyses of contamination by toxic elements in soil are important tools to manage remediation initiatives or population resettling. In Brazil, a primary lead smelter operated in Bahia state from 1960 to 1993 generating several environment and health concerns. This work presents an analysis of the estimated ecological and human health risk for the region around the smelter. Concentration data from three studies were used to evaluate ecological and health risk indexes. Geostatistical analysis using maps identified a high concentration of potentially toxic elements: Pb, Cd and Zn around the chimney of the old smelter, exceeding the regulatory limits for industrial soil. The soil pollution and ecological risk analyses showed high values around the chimney of the old plant. The analysis of risk to human health showed that the risk for disease through soil contamination by Cd and Zn is low and non-existent around the old plant. However, the risk for disease through soil contamination by Pb is very high for children and moderately high for adults around the old plant. It is estimated that more than 7000 people are at risk in this region due to the toxic elements in the soil (about 12% of the population of the city). Due to the pollution and the ecological and health risks of the contaminated soil in the Santo Amaro region, the authorities should urgently undertake remediation and resettlement programs for the population of the region. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an increasingly common disease with liver transplant (LT) the best long-term therapy for early stage disease. We will review the data for assessing risk and managing recurrence for patients undergoing LT for HCC. In this review, we will provide an overview of methods of patient risk stratification in the post-transplant period, the data around surveillance for HCC recurrence, and the evidence for and against post-LT adjuvant treatment strategies. Finally, we will provide data regarding treatment options for patients with HCC recurrence after LT. Using an extensive search of original papers and society guidelines, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the data for assessing risk and managing recurrence for patients undergoing LT for HCC. The development of multiple post-transplant prognostic scoring systems have allowed for improved assessment of recurrence risk and stratification of patients. However, the ability to translate this information into surveillance and therapeutic strategies that improve patient outcomes still have to be fully demonstrated. Post-LT immunosuppression strategies have been implemented in order to attempt to reduce this risk. Evidence-based strategies for managing recurrent HCC are evolving. Watershed ecological risk is affected by the environment, climate, and human activity. In this study, the Daxia River Basin in northwestern China was regarded as the research area. The remote heavy metal ecological risk assessment model of the basin was constructed using remote sensing data, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and environmental factors. The results show that different areas of the basin have different ecological risk levels depending on the geographical location and the level of human activity. A multivariate linear relationship exists between the NDVI and heavy metal content, precipitation, and temperature, and a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.866 was derived at a significance level of P < 0.01. There was a nonlinear relationship between the average heavy metal content and the Health Risk Index. The model correlation coefficient equals 0.893 at P < 0.01. The results of the study further demonstrate that risk assessment of the basin can be carried out using remote sensing information and environmental meteorological factors. Arsenic is a well-known natural environmental contaminant distributed in food, water, air, and soil. The developmental toxicity of arsenic exposure is a significant concern in large parts of the world. Unlike acute toxic exposure, the classical dose–response relationship is not adequate for estimating the possible impact of chronic low-level arsenic exposure. The real-life risk and impact assessments require the consideration of the co-exposure to multiple toxins, individual genetic and nutritional predisposition, and the particularly vulnerable stages of the neurodevelopment. This context shifts the assessment model away from the 'one-exposure-for-one-health-effect.' We underscore the need for a comprehensive risk assessment that takes into account all relevant determinants. We aim to elaborate a model that can serve as a basis for an understanding of complex interacting factors in a long-lasting and ongoing low-level arsenic exposure, to identify, protect, and support the children at risk. The main purpose of the current study is to assess the contamination status, human health risk, and spatial distribution of heavy metals in the urban soils from the Medak province in India. For this purposes, a total of 40 urban surface soil samples were collected and analyzed seven heavy metals including chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). The results of the study showed that the concentration of Cr (81–751 mg/kg), Cu (2–180 mg/kg), Zn (25–108 mg/kg), Pb (5–77 mg/kg), Ni (1–50 mg/kg), As (0.4–14 mg/kg), and Cd (0.1–4.2 mg/kg), respectively, was found above their natural background values. The geo-accumulation index analysis indicated that except Zn, all other tested heavy metals had a range of moderately to heavily polluted/contaminated in the study region. Spatial distribution pattern analysis inferred that the soil heavy metal (Cu, Cr, Zn, and Ni) pollutions in western regions of Medak were relatively larger than that in central and eastern regions. The hazard index (HI) values for Cu, Cd, Zn, As, Pb, and Ni were below 1, implying that there is no non-carcinogenic risks exposure from these heavy metals in soil for children and adults in the study region. However, HI value for Cr ranged from 3.08E−01 to 2.86E+00 for children, implying that children were relatively vulnerable population than adults in the current study region. Comparatively speaking, 67.5% and 100% total carcinogenic risks for Cr values for adults and children were larger than the acceptable threshold value of 1.0E−04, indicating chromium poses the greatest carcinogenic risk in the study region. Background: Heavy metal contamination via mining activity is a serious problem around the world. This study was conducted to evaluate the total non-cancer hazard quotient (THQ) and excess lifetime cancer risks of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) to different population groups via soil, wheat and barley ingestion, soil-dermal contact, and inhalation soil particulates around Shahin mine located in Shazand County. Methods: Soil and plants were sampled randomly from 60 agricultural fields around Shahin mine. The samples Pb and Cd concentrations were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The THQ and the excess lifetime cancer risks of Pb and Cd were estimated using the formulas suggested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The Pb non-cancer risk for children (<6 years old) was assessed using the integrated exposure uptake bio-kinetic (IEUBK) model. Results: The mean contents of Pb (234.47 mg kg−1) and Cd (1.89 mg kg−1) in soil samples were higher than the background values. The mean Pb and Cd concentrations in wheat grains were 0.44 and 0.23 μg g−1 respectively, which were about 6.5 and 5.8 times higher than that was observed in barley grains, respectively. The THQ of Pb and Cd for all groups were greater than 1. The excess lifetime cancer risks of Pb via wheat and barley consumption for all receptor groups were greater than 1 × 10−6. Conclusions: Crop ingestion and soil inhalation had the greatest and lowest portions to increase the THQ and excess lifetime cancer risks of Pb and Cd in the study region, respectively. Because of the low amount of nitrogen and organic matter in most soils of Iran, it is recommended to use nitrogen fertilizers in potato fields. Nitrate accumulates in plants naturally and if it enters into the human body it can threaten human health. There is not enough information about nitrate distribution in potatoes in Iran and a scientific value of critical level of nitrate in potatoes in Iran. The objective of this study, then, is to: determine the amount of nitrate in potatoes produced in different parts of Iran, assess the human health risks arising from potatoes nitrate, and calculate the critical concentration of nitrate in potato, using a risk assessment study and Iranian food basket. Two hundred and seventy-seven samples were collected from main provinces producing potatoes in Iran. Concentration of nitrate was measured in all samples. Results showed that Kerman province has more nitrate pollution and non cancer risk arising from nitrate. The most sensitive group to nitrate was boys 7–14 years old residing in Kerman province. Critical value of nitrate in potato for this receptor group, then for Iranian society in conservative conditions, was calculated using intake equations introduced by the USEPA and considering Iranian food basket as 246 mg kg–1. The present study was conducted to assess the risks to human health from exposure to arsenic, lead, nickel, zinc, and copper through consumption of wheat, rice, and some vegetables in Isfahan Province, central Iran, using the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotient and cancer risk assessment estimates. Risk contribution from Ni is minimal compared with other metals and it was less than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The results showed that total non-carcinogenic hazard of As and Pb, were greater than 1, and total cancer risk of As slightly greater than 1 × 10−4for all age groups. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is an international public health concern, and chronic infection can lead to the development of cirrhosis, liver failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma as well as the need for liver transplantation. The recurrence of HBV infection following liver transplantation was disproportionately high prior to the introduction of proper prophylactic treatment. Risk factors associated with the recurrence of HBV infection posttransplant include hepatitis B e antigen positivity, high levels of serum HBV DNA, and the presence of an antiviral drug-resistant strain prior to transplantation. The prevention of HBV recurrence began with the introduction of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) in the early 1990s. Nucleos(t)ide analog (NA) antiviral drugs were next to be introduced and, in combination with HBIG, are considered to be extremely effective for the prevention of recurrence. Because of concerns with HBIG, whether HBIG can be used for a short time or discontinued altogether is under debate. All of the NA antiviral drugs have been proven to be effective against HBV, at least in the pretransplant setting, and can be used safely posttransplant. Purpose: Selective IgA deficiency (SIgAD) is the most common primary immunodeficiency with a prevalence of 1/600 in the general population. Any targeted health-related quality of life (HRQL) study of adults with SIgAD has never been presented. The objectives of the study were to compare HRQL between SIgAD adults and randomly selected age- and gender-matched population controls, and to identify risk factors for poor HRQL. Methods: Thirty-two SIgAD individuals and 63 controls answered three questionnaires (clinical data, Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), infection-related HRQL) at baseline before undergoing medical/dental examinations and laboratory assessments. HRQL in SIgAD was re-evaluated after 6 and 12 months. Results: Baseline: Selective IgA deficiency individuals reported significantly increased fear of contracting infections ( p < 0.01). Those scoring high on fear also perceived significantly poorer physical health ( p < 0.01). SF-36 results indicated that SIgAD individuals perceived poorer HRQL, although this was not statistically significant. Follow-up: Compared with SF-36 responses at baseline, SIgAD individuals reported significantly more pain ( p < 0.01) at 6 months, poorer general health ( p < 0.05) and summarised physical HRQL ( p < 0.01) at 6 and 12 months and decreased vitality at 12 months. The summarised mental scale remained stable over time. Risk factors for poor HRQL: The number of antibiotic treatments during the previous year ( p < 0.001), number of daily medications ( p < 0.01), allergic rhinoconjunctivitis ( p < 0.05), chronic musculoskeletal symptoms at least every week ( p < 0.05) and anxiety and/or insomnia ( p < 0.05) were identified as independent risk factors for poor HRQL. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of identifying and thoroughly evaluating, educating and following up individuals with SIgAD, as their HRQL may be negatively affected due to health problems possible to prevent and treat. Background: Alcohol dependence is a chronic disorder in which withdrawal symptoms often persist after detoxification. The purpose of the present experiment was to characterize susceptibility to stress and anxiogenic stimuli in rats over an extended time period following ethanol withdrawal. Methods: Male Wistar rats were made dependent via ethanol vapor exposure. The rats were then tested in the elevated plus-maze during acute ethanol withdrawal (ACW, ∼8 hour), early “protracted” withdrawal (EPW, 2 weeks), or late “protracted” withdrawal (LPW, 6, 12 weeks) following brief restraint or no stress. Principal components analysis was used to identify constructs underlying plus-maze behavior. Results: Three factors characterized plus-maze performance: anxiety, locomotor activity, and risk assessment/decision making. Spontaneous anxiety-like behavior was increased during ACW, decreased to levels of ethanol-naïve controls during EPW, but markedly resurged during LPW. Withdrawal did not alter sensitivity to the anxiety-like effects of restraint stress. All ethanol-dependent rats showed locomotor hypoactivity that, in contrast to anxiety, remained stable throughout all withdrawal stages. Neither ethanol withdrawal nor restraint stress altered mean “risk assessment/decision making” scores, though ethanol withdrawal altered the emission of “risk assessment/decision making” behavior in relation to anxiety-like behavior and behavioral activation state. Conclusions: The findings illustrate and model the spontaneous, severe, and long-lasting nature of behavioral abnormalities that accompany withdrawal from chronic, intermittent ethanol intoxication. The dynamic remission and resurgence in symptoms of negative affect (i.e., behavioral signs of anxiety) during “protracted” withdrawal may complicate recovery from alcoholism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and the increasing use of herbal medicines around the world, there are concerns over their safety. In recent years, there have been some sporadic reports of pesticide residues in Chuanxiong Rhizoma (CX), although the lack of systematic and comprehensive analyses of pesticide residues and evaluations of toxicological risks in human health has increased the uncertainty of the potential effects of pesticides exposure in humans. This study aimed to clarify the status of pesticide residues and to determine the health risks of pesticide residues in CX. The findings of this study revealed that 99 batches of CX samples contained pesticide residues ranging from 0.05 to 3013.17 μg/kg. Here, 6–22 kinds of pesticides were detected in each sample. Prometryn, carbendazim, dimethomorph, chlorpyrifos, chlorantraniliprole, pyraclostrobin, and paclobutrazol were the most frequently detected pesticides, with detection rates of 68.69–100%. Insecticides and fungicides accounted for 43.23% and 37.84% of the total pesticides detected, respectively. Here, 86.87% of the pesticide content levels were lower than 50 μg/kg, and a small number of samples contained carbofuran, dimethoate, and isofenphos-methyl exceeding the maximum residue levels (MRLs). A risk assessment based on the hazard quotient/hazard index (HQ/HI) approach revealed that the short-term, long-term, and cumulative risks of pesticide residues in CX are well below the levels that may pose a health risk. Worryingly, six banned pesticides (carbofuran, phorate sulfone, phorate-sulfoxide, isofenphos-methyl, terbufos-sulfone, and terbufoxon sulfoxide) were detected. This study has improved our understanding of the potential exposure risk of pesticide multi-residues in CX. This study investigates pesticide levels in celery, and compares their degradation, dissipation, distribution, and dietary risk after spraying with selenium (Se) nanoparticles. Abamectin, imidacloprid, acetamiprid, thiamethoxam, and lambda-cyhalothrin were sprayed at 1.6, 6.8, 2.0, 1.0, and 0.7 g a.i. ha−1 followed by a 2 g·ha−1 Se nanoparticle application during the growing period. Thiamethoxam, abamectin, imidacloprid, lambda-cyhalothrin, and acetamiprid in celery degraded following a first order kinetic model after 2 g·ha−1 Se nanoparticles application. With the exception of acetamiprid, the half-lives of thiamethoxam, abamectin, imidacloprid, and lambda-cyhalothrin were reduced from 2.4, 0.5, 1.2, 4.2 days without Se nanoparticles application to 1.4, 0.2, 0.9, 3.7 days with the addition of Se nanoparticles (2 g·ha−1), respectively. The chronic dietary exposure risk probability (RQc) and the acute dietary exposure risk probability (RQa) of celery after Se nanoparticles application were within acceptable limits for consumption except for abamectin. Surface samples (0–25 cm each) of agricultural soils were investigated in five Regions (voivodeships) of southern Poland. The mean Potentially Harmful Element (PHE) pseudototal content ranges were as follows (mg/kg): As 5.19–10.9, Cd 0.34–1.56, Co 1.92–6.70, Cr 9.05–25.7, Cu 8.74–69.4, Hg 0.001–0.08, Ni 3.93–19.9, Pb 20.3–183, Sb 0.80–1.42, Tl 0.04–0.17, and Zn 61.3–422. The PHE availability depended on pH, the organic carbon (Corg) content, and the pseudototal PHE content in soils. Exchangeable and acid soluble PHE contents (BCRF1) determined in the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) three-step sequential extraction procedure decreased in this order: Cd > Zn > Co > Ni = Sb > Cu > Tl > As > Cr = Pb. Actually available PHE contents in pore water (0.01 mol/dm3 CaCl2) ranged as follows: Cd 0.81–17%, Cr 0–0.25%, Cu 0.01–2.31%, Ni 0.16–2%, Pb 0.2–0.49%, and Zn 0.25–2.12%. The potential soluble total content of PHEs in pore water (0.05 mol/dm3 Na2EDTA) ranged as follows: Cd 27–91%, Cr 0.7–7.1%, Cu 6.7–98%, Ni 3.6–41%, Pb 15–41%, and Zn 3–34%. The mobility factor (MF) values indicated Cd (31.6%) and Zn (21.0%) as the most mobile elements in soil. Other PHEs followed the order of Co > Ni > Tl > As > Sb > Cu > Cr > Pb, with the MF values <10%. The risk assessment code (RAC) values revealed a very high ecological risk of Cd and Zn in the Podkarpackie Region and a high ecological risk of Cd in the Regions of Opolskie, Śląskie, Małopolskie, and Podkarpackie, and the same of Zn in the Opolskie and Śląskie. The modified risk assessment code (mRAC) index pointed a very high potential of adverse effects in soils in the Podkarpackie and a medium potential in the Opolskie, Śląskie, Małopolskie, and Świętokrzyskie. The potential adverse effect risk, described by the individual contamination factor (ICF) factor, was the following in the Regions, in the decreasing order: Cd > Pb > Sb > Zn > Co > Cu > Ni > Tl > As > Cr, and the same as described by the global contamination factor (GCF) values: Opolskie > Podkarpackie > Świętokrzyskie > Śląskie > Małopolskie.
