Digital dermatitis (DD) has emerged in North American feedlots, although production and economic impacts are not fully understood. Objectives of this study were to: (1) estimate the economic impact of a single case of DD, foot rot (FR), and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in feedlot cattle and (2) determine its impact on average daily gain (ADG). Feedlot cattle health and production records were available from two feedlots for a 3-yr interval. The dataset consisted of 77,115 animal records, with 19.3% (14,900) diagnosed with a disease. Diseased animals were categorized into five groups: DD, FR, BRD, other diseases (OT), and two or more diseases (TM), with a treatment cumulative incidence of 6.0%, 59.1%, 10.7%, 12.7%, and 11.5%, respectively. FR was the disease with the highest cumulative incidence in both heifers and steers (58.8% and 59.6%, respectively). Of all fall-placed cattle diagnosed with any disease, 48.1% of the cases were FR. DD affected the partial budget in five out of the eight groups of cattle, with the highest impact of DD seen in grass yearling heifers and grass yearling steers: $-98 and $-96 CAD, respectively, relative to their healthier counterparts. Healthy cattle had a significantly higher ADG when compared with DD cattle in five of the eight categories, ranging from 0.11 kg/d in winter-placed heifers to 0.17 kg/d in fall-placed steers. In the economic analysis, it was concluded that on an individual animal basis, BRD was the most impactful of all analyzed diseases, whereas DD was second, marking the importance of controlling and mitigating this foot condition. Identifying differential effects of diseases on a partial budget analysis and ADG of the types of cattle stratified by sex enables feedlot producers to focus control and mitigation strategies on specific groups. Summary: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a complex disease that is associated with infection by bacterial and viral pathogens when cattle fail to adequately respond to stress. The objective of this study was to use gene set enrichment analysis of SNP data (GSEA‐SNP) and a network analysis (ingenuity pathway analysis) to identify gene sets, genes within gene sets (leading‐edge genes) and upstream regulators associated with BRD in pre‐weaned dairy calves and beef feedlot cattle. BRD cases and controls were diagnosed using the McGuirk health scoring system. Holstein calves were sampled from commercial calf‐raising facilities in California (1003 cases and 1011 controls) and New Mexico (376 cases and 372 controls). Commercial feedlot cattle were sampled from Colorado (500 cases and 499 controls) and Washington (504 cases and 497 controls). There were 102 and 237 unique leading‐edge genes identified in the dairy calf and beef cattle populations respectively. Six leading‐edge genes (ADIPOQ, HTR2A, MIF, PDE6G, PRDX3 and SNCA) were associated with BRD in both dairy and beef cattle. Network analysis identified glucose as the most influential upstream regulator in dairy cattle, whereas in beef cattle, TNF was the most influential upstream regulator. The genes, gene sets and upstream regulators associated with BRD have common functions associated with immunity, inflammation and pulmonary disease and provide insights into the mechanisms that are critical to BRD susceptibility in cattle. A distinct difference between veterinary and human medicine is the routine use of antimicrobial mass medications (prophylaxis, metaphylaxis) to healthy individuals. The need for antimicrobial mass medications is based on beliefs that group/s of animals will contract a bacterial disease (i.e. morbidity) and/or die (i.e. mortality). Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) represents the major indication for cattle antimicrobials worldwide. The objectives were to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) for naturally occurring BRD investigating antimicrobial prophylaxis/metaphylaxis to prevent morbidity/mortality. In total, 58 publications met the inclusion criteria summarizing 169 individual RCTs, spanning 50 years (1966-2016). Antimicrobial prophylaxis and metaphylaxis demonstrated moderate, yet highly variable relative risk reductions in BRD morbidity. These were dependent on the antimicrobial classes used, dependent on metaphylaxis definition, BRD attack rates and duration of the RCTs. Best relative risk reductions were from broad-spectrum critically important antimicrobials, or combinations. BRD prophylaxis/metaphylaxis represents major antimicrobial consumption for highly variable short-term gains in absolute risk reduction of morbidity/mortality. Despite widespread use of prevention products, the need for antimicrobial mass medications should be re-evaluated since the underlying problem is more likely the segmented infrastructure of the feedlot and veal calf industries compared to the disease itself. Assessment of blood L-lactate concentration (LAC) as point-of-care (POC) biomarkers is turning into a typical procedure for different diagnostic purposes in the food animal industry. The purpose of our study was to figure out whether blood LAC measured by a hand held lactate analyzer with different variables could be utilized to anticipate the event of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in feedlot cattle. Moreover, assess the blood LAC stability over different time point in clinically healthy feedlot cattle. Blood sample was collected at entry during processing (n=104) and at initial diagnosis of BRD (n=24). In addition, clinically healthy pen matched controls calves (n=24) were sampled at the same time of pulling diseased calves for determination of blood LAC using a handheld portable lactate analyzer. In a separate study, selected clinically healthy calves (n=9) were sampled and blood LAC stability at the different time point (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minute) was assessed. Logistic regression model revealed blood LAC during initial processing was significantly associated with odds of becoming a BRD case in calves revealing lung score 2. Moreover, blood LAC was significantly different (P=0.02) between clinically healthy and those calves that developed BRD and was significantly correlated (P>0.01) within the different time points. Our results demonstrated that analyzing blood LAC at initial diagnosis of BRD together with other clinical variable might help in the treatment decision. Tildipirosin ( TIP) is a novel 16-membered-ring macrolide authorized for the treatment of bovine and swine respiratory disease. The pH dependency of macrolide antimicrobial activity is well known. Considering that the pH in the colon contents of growing beef cattle and pigs is usually below pH 7.0, the minimum inhibitory concentrations ( MIC) of TIP against foodborne bacterial pathogens such as Campylobacter (C.) coli, C. jejuni and Salmonella enterica and commensal species including Enterococcus (E.) faecalis, E. faecium and Escherichia coli were determined under standard ( pH 7.3 ± 1) or neutral as well as slightly acidic conditions. A decrease in pH from 7.3 to 6.7 resulted in an increase in MICs of TIP. Except for the MICs > 256 μg/mL observed in the resistant subpopulation of the C. coli and the Enterococcus species, the MIC ranges increased from 2-8 μg/mL to 64-> 256 μg/mL for Salmonella enterica and E. coli, from 8-16 μg/mL to 32-128 μg/mL for the two Campylobacter species, and from 4-32 μg/mL to 128-> 256 μg/mL for both Enterococcus species. To estimate the antimicrobial activity of TIP in the colon contents of livestock during recommended usage of the parenterally administered TIP (Zuprevo®), and to compare this with the increased MICs at the slightly acidic colonic pH, we developed and validated a microbiological assay for TIP and used this to test incurred faecal samples collected from cattle and pigs. Microbiological activity of luminal TIP was determined in aqueous supernatants from diluted faeces, using standard curves produced from TIP-spiked faecal supernatants. The limit of quantification ( LOQ) for TIP was 1 μg/mL (ppm). In a cattle study ( n = 14), 3 of 28 faecal samples collected 24 and 48 h post-treatment were found to contain TIP above the LOQ (concentrations of 1.3-1.8 ppm). In another cattle study ( n = 12) with faecal samples collected at 8, 24 and 48 h post-treatment, TIP concentrations were above the LOQ in 4 of the 8 h samples (1.2-2.6 ppm) and one of the 24-h samples (1.3 ppm). In a pig study ( n = 12) with faecal samples collected 24, 48 and 72 h post-treatment, only one sample contained TIP above the LOQ (concentration 1.5 ppm). In another pig study ( n = 12), with samples collected at 8, 24 48 and 96 h post-treatment, TIP concentrations were above the LOQ in one 8-h sample (1.1 ppm) and two 24-h samples (2.3 and 2.5 ppm). None of the 48-h and 96-h samples from these 4 studies contained measurable TIP concentrations. Thus, in cattle and pigs, only a small fraction of faecal samples collected up to 24 h postdosing contained measurable microbiologically active TIP, with its maximum limited to 2.6 μg/mL. This is several log2 dilution steps below the MICs of TIP against foodborne pathogens and commensals collected under acidic conditions comparable with those in the colonic contents and may explain a lack of intestinal dysbacteriosis with parenteral tildipirosin in livestock. Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDc) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in beef cattle. There is recent evidence suggesting that the nasopharyngeal microbiota has a key role in respiratory health and disease susceptibility in cattle. However, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding evolution of the nasopharyngeal microbiota when cattle are most likely to develop BRDc ( i.e. , from weaning to 40 days after arrival at a feedlot). The objective was to describe the evolution of the nasopharyngeal microbiota of beef cattle from weaning to 40 days after arrival at a feedlot. Deep nasal swabs (DNS) from 30 Angus-cross steers were collected at weaning, on arrival at a feedlot, and at day 40 after arrival. The DNA was extracted from DNS and the hypervariable region V3 of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced (Illumina MiSeq platform). Nasopharyngeal microbiota underwent a profound evolution from weaning to arrival at the feedlot and from arrival to day 40, with the abundance of 92 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) significantly changing over time. Mycoplasma ( M. dispar and M. bovirhinis ) was the most abundant genus in the nasopharynx, accounting for 53% of the total bacterial population. Because an evolving bacterial community may be less capable of resisting colonization by pathogenic bacteria, the instability of the nasopharyngeal microbiota documented in this study might explain why cattle are most likely to be affected with BRDc during the first weeks after weaning and arrival at a feedlot. The objective of this paper was to perform a critical review of the literature as it pertains to the current status of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in beef cattle and to provide a concise yet informative narrative on the most relevant publications available. As such, the scientific literature contained in PubMed, AGRICOLA, and CAB were searched in February of 2014 for articles related to susceptibility testing of Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni from cases of BRD. Titles and abstracts were read and 105 articles that were relevant to the subject of BRD antibiotic resistance were attained for further review. After the application of exclusion criterion (publications must have originated from North America, be in English, adhere to standards set forth by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, and be concerning antimicrobial resistance in BRD in beef cattle), 16 articles remained and are the focus of this publication. Due to the disparate data from the few studies that investigate susceptibility testing of BRD pathogens, a quantitative assessment or meta-analysis was not performed on the studies presented in this review. However, considering diagnostic lab data, there appears to be a clear trend of a decrease in susceptibility of the three major BRD pathogens to the antimicrobials used commonly for treatment and control of BRD. Studies performing sensitivity testing on healthy cattle report much lower resistance, but it remains unclear if this is because of a true lack of resistance mechanisms, or if the isolates do contain quiescent genes for resistance that are only phenotypically expressed following the administration of an antimicrobial for either treatment or control of BRD. Future research to address this question of genotype and phenotypic expression before and after antimicrobial administration will further advance our knowledge in this area. New technologies to identify diseased feedlot cattle in early stages of illness have been developed to reduce costs and welfare impacts associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD). However, the economic value of early BRD detection has never been assessed. The objective was to simulate cost differences between two BRD detection methods during the first 61 d on feed (DOF) applied in moderate- to large-sized feedlots using an automated recording system (ARS) for feeding behavior and the current industry standard, pen-checking (visual appraisal confirmed by rectal temperature). Economic impact was assessed with a cost analysis in a simple decision model. Scenarios for Canadian and US feedlots with high- and low-risk cattle were modeled, and uncertainty was estimated using extensive sensitivity analyses. Input costs and probabilities were mainly extracted from publicly accessible market observations and a large-scale US feedlot study. In the baseline scenario, we modeled high-risk cattle with a treatment rate of 20% within the first 61 DOF in a feedlot of >8000 cattle in Canada. Early BRD detection was estimated to result in a relative risk of 0.60 in retreatment and 0.66 in mortality compared to pen-checking (based on previously published estimates). The additional cost of monitoring health with ARS in Canadian dollar (CAD) was 13.68 per steer. Scenario analysis for similar sized US feedlots and low-risk cattle with a treatment rate of 8% were included to account for variability in costs and probabilities in various cattle populations. Considering the cost of monitoring, all relevant treatment costs and sale price, ARS was more costly than visual appraisal during the first 61 DOF by CAD 9.61 and CAD 9.69 per steer in Canada and the US, respectively. This cost difference increased in low-risk cattle in Canada to CAD 12.45. Early BRD detection with ARS became less expensive if the costs for the system decreased to less than CAD 4.06/steer, or if the underlying true BRD incidence (not treatment rate) within the first 61 DOF exceeded 47%. The model was robust to variability in the remaining input variables. Some of the assumptions in the baseline analyses were conservative and may have underestimated the real value of early BRD detection. Systems such as ARS may reduce treatment costs in some scenarios, but the investment costs are currently too high to be cost-effective when used solely for BRD detection compared to pen-checking. The bovine respiratory disease complex (BRD) is a major health issue in feedlot cattle and one of the primary reasons for antimicrobial use in the North American feedlot industry. The purpose of the present study was to assess blood l -lactate levels of feedlot steers at high risk of developing BRD during the early feeding period. Blood samples were obtained at initial processing and again after BRD confirmation (using bronchial lavage or thoracic ultrasound exam). The study involved 232 recently weaned steers received at a single research feedlot that were processed without metaphylactic antimicrobial treatment. Blood samples were obtained for determination of l -lactatemia and temperament scores (very quiet or stoic [score 1], average [score 2] and very excited [score 3]) were systematically assigned at initial processing. A subsample of calves that were later confirmed as cases of BRD were sampled at first pull (day 0), and at subsequent observation points on days 3, 6, 9 and 15 following initial BRD diagnosis for blood lactate determination as a potential indicator of subsequent death. The clinical BRD cumulative incidence in the cohort was 38% (87/232). Temperament was associated with the probability of becoming a BRD case during the early feeding period. Stoic or very excited calves showed 2.2 times higher odds (95%CI: 1.3, 3.8) of becoming BRD cases compared to calves with average temperament. The impact of l -lactatemia differed by temperament strata. In calves with a temperament score of 2 (average temperament) every 1-log unit increase of lactatemia at processing resulted in 1.9 times higher odds (95% CI: 1.2, 3.1) of becoming a BRD case; this relationship was not significant in calves with a score of either 1 or 3. Twenty-nine confirmed BRD cases were studied for the dynamic lactate assessment analysis. l -lactate at first pull was not significantly different between survivors (median 3.3 mmol/L; range 0.8–7.8 mmol/L) and non-survivors (median 2.7 mmol/L; range: 1.6–5.4 mmol/L) steers. However, the dynamic assessment of l -lactatemia was associated with the hazard of death using Cox proportional hazard survival analysis. A 1-log increase of lactatemia increased the hazard of dying prior to the next observation by a factor of 36.5 (95% CI: 3.5–381.6). For calves showing a normal temperament score (i.e. temperament score of 2), a misclassification cost term analysis was conducted to identify potential l -lactate test thresholds for identifying future BRD steers. When planned test usage was for informing decision of administering or not a metaphylactic treatment at processing, experts agreed that false-negative (not treating a calf that would have benefit from treatment) to false-positive (wrongfully treating a calf that would have remained healthy) health costs ratio ranged from 8:1 to 20:1. In this situation, a threshold of 5 mmol/L would have best informed treatment decision. When using l -lactate for informing the type of antimicrobial used at processing, false-negative to false-positive health costs ratio ranging from 1:1 to 3:1 could be expected and, again, a l -lactate threshold of 5.0 mmol/L would have minimized the costs associated with calves’ misclassification and could be used to identify calves that would benefit from a more efficient metaphylactic treatment. This study provides an interesting perspective on the potential application of chute-side markers or diagnostic tests to stratify the risk of future pull for BRD in cattle during processing in order to adapt antimicrobial treatments accordingly. The aim of this study was to evaluate three acute phase proteins (APP) [haptoglobin (HPT), lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) and transferrin (Tf)] in feedlot cattle with naturally occurring respiratory disease diagnosed by a calf health scoring chart (CHSC). Seventy-seven beef calves were observed for signs of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) during the first 28 days after arrival at the feedlot. Fourteen cases and pen matched controls were selected based on the CHSC. BRD cases were defined as a score of ≥5, while controls were defined as a score ≤4. The mean CHSC score in cases was 6.9 which was significantly greater than the controls 2.8 ( P < 0.01). Mean plasma LBP and HPT concentrations were significantly greater in cases than controls ( P < 0.01). Our study results show that measurement of HPT and LBP could be useful in detecting respiratory disease in feedlot conditions. Abstract: The primary objective of this study was to determine, at the lung level, whether single or multiple clones of Mannheimia haemolytica are present within a pen during a bovine respiratory disease (BRD) episode. A secondary objective was to assess whether M. haemolytica isolates obtained from nasal swabs (NS) are identical to those isolated deeper within the respiratory tract. Sixteen BRD episodes that naturally occurred in 12 pens of eight to 12 bulls (n =112) newly-received at three fattening operations were investigated. One hundred and seventy five M. haemolytica isolates were collected from 239 pairs of trans-tracheal aspirations (TTA) and NS performed during these 16 BRD episodes. M. haemolytica isolates were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). PFGE types obtained from NS and TTA were then compared. M. haemolytica was isolated during 14 BRD episodes. Two to three different clones of M. haemolytica were recovered during 10 episodes whereas only one clone was recovered in four episodes. A moderate agreement (kappa=0.50) between NS and TTA for M. haemolytica isolation was observed. Identical PFGE types were only observed in 77% of matched NS-TTA pairs. The significant within-pen diversity of M. haemolytica during BRD episodes indicates that the disease is not primarily due to the spread of a single virulent clone among cattle and highlights the importance of predisposing factors that enable the resident flora to overcome the cattle''s immune system. The results also demonstrate that isolates recovered from NS are not always representative of the isolates present deeper within the respiratory tract. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Remote rumen temperature monitoring is a potential method for early disease detection in beef cattle. This experiment was conducted to determine if remotely monitored rumen temperature boluses could detect a temperature change in steers exposed to bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and challenged with a common bovine respiratory disease pathogen, Mannheimia haemolytica (MH). Twenty-four Angus crossbred steers (BW = 313 ± 31 kg) were allotted to 1 of 4 treatments: 1) no challenge (control); 2) challenge by a 72-h exposure to 2 steers persistently infected with BVDV; 3) bacterial challenge with MH; and 4) viral challenge by a 72-h exposure to 2 steers persistently infected with BVDV followed by bacterial challenge with MH (BVDV + MH). Remotely monitored rumen temperature boluses programmed to transmit temperature every minute were placed in the rumen before the time of exposure to steers persistently infected with BVDV. Rectal temperatures were taken before MH challenge (0) and at 2, 4, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 h after MH challenge. Rumen temperatures were recorded 3 d before (-72 h; period of BVDV exposure) through 14 d after (336 h) MH challenge. Rumen temperatures were analyzed as a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments and a first-order autoregressive covariance structure for repeated measures. A treatment x day interaction was observed for average daily rumen temperature (P < 0.01). A treatment difference (P < 0.01) was observed on d 0, when MH-challenged steers had greater rumen temperatures than steers not challenged with MH. There was no BVDV x day interaction (P > 0.01). Rumen temperatures averaged every 2 h resulted in a BVDV x hour interaction (P < 0.01) and an MH x hour interaction (P < 0.01). The BVDV x hour differences occurred at h -18 to -14, 40 to 46, 110, 122, and 144 to 146 (P < 0.01). The MH x hour difference occurred at h 4 to 24 (P < 0.01). Maximum rumen temperature was increased (P < 0.01) for BVDV (0.8°C), MH (1.2°C), and BVDV + MH (1.3°C) compared with the control. On average, rumen temperatures measured by the boluses at the same time points as the rectal temperatures were 0.13°C less than rectal temperatures, and the 2 body temperatures were highly correlated (r = 0.89). Rumen temperature boluses appear to have potential as a tool for detecting temperature changes associated with adverse health events such as exposure to bovine respiratory disease and BVDV. The objective was to determine effects of an intratracheal Mannheimia haemolytica challenge after 72–h exposure to bovine viral diarrhea virus type lb (BVDV1b) persistently infected (PT) calves on serum antibody production, white blood cell count (WBC), cytokine concentrations, and blood gases in feedlot steers. Twenty–four steers (initial BW = 314 ± 31 kg) were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatments (6 steers/treatment) arranged as a 2 x 2 factorial. Treatments were 1) steers not exposed to steers P1 with BVDV nor challenged with M. haemolytica (control; CON); 2) steers exposed to 2 steers PT with BVDV for 72 h (BVD); 3) steers intratracheally challenged with M. haemolytica (MH); and 4) steers exposed to 2 steers PT with BVDV for 72 h and challenged with M. haemolytica (BVD+MH). There were 12 h between exposure to PT steers and challenge with M. haemolytica. Rectal temperature was increased (P < 0.001) for MH and BVD+MH during the initial 24 h after the M. haemolytica challenge. For MH and BVD+MH, total WBC count was increased (P < 0.01) at 36 h post M. haemolytica challenge compared with CON, whereas in BVD steers, WBC count was decreased (P < 0.01). Total lymphocyte count was increased (P = 0.004) during the initial 72 h post BVDV exposure for the BVD and BVD+MH groups compared with MH and CON, and this difference remained at 96 h post M. haemolytica challenge. An increased (P < 0.001) total neutrophil count was observed during the initial 36 h for the MH group and at 72 h for the BVD+MH challenge group. Interleukin 113, TL–6, and tumor necrosis factor ci (TNFα) concentrations were greater (P ◀ 0.04) in BVD steers than steers not exposed to BVDV, and interferon &#x03B3, IL–1β, and TNFci were greater (P ⩽ 0.02) in MH steers than in steers not challenged with M. haemolytica. There were BVD x MH interactions (P ⩽ 0.04) for plasma carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, and sodium bicarbonate concentrations. Challenge with M. haerrtolytica decreased carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, and sodium bicarbonate concentrations to a greater extent when steers were not exposed to PT steers compared with steers exposed to BVDV. We conclude that the challenge model was successful at inducing bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with BVDV and M. haemolytica. The objective of this study was to characterize genetic and environmental factors influencing bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in beef cattle. Records from nine purebred and three composite breeds and a variety of F1 and three-way crosses, including the progeny of 12 additional different sire breeds produced over a 20-yr period (1983 to 2002), were evaluated for breed and heterozygosity effects on the observed incidence of BED. Heterozygosity fractions for calves and dams were defined by generalized breed origins: British, Continental, and tropically adapted. Variance components were estimated for each pure and composite breed, and across all breeds and crossbreeds. The effect of incidence of observed BRD was determined by comparing groups of low and high years of incidence. Respiratory disease in this herd followed a standard epidemiological pattern of initial introduction, reaching an epidemic stage at 70 to 170 d of age, followed by a period of rapid decrease to weaning. Estimates of heritability of incidence of BRD were low, ranging from 0.00 to 0.26, with overall estimates of 0.07 and 0.19 depending on the data set analyzed. The highest incidence of BRD in preweaned calves occurred in the Braunvieh breed (18.8%). The genetic correlation between the direct and maternal genetic effects was generally large and negative, suggesting dams genetically superior for resisting BRD raise calves that are more susceptible. Perhaps maternally superior dams provide passive immunity to their calves, which delays the development of the calves' direct immune system, making them more prone to BRD during the preweaning period. Heterozygosity of calves decreased the incidence of BRD compared with purebred cattle. Calves that were Continental x British or tropically adapted x British breeds had a lower incidence of BRD than did calves of British x British breeds. As the annual incidence of BRD increased, there was an associated increase in the heritability estimate. The estimated heritability based on an underlying continuous scale was large (h² = 0.48), inferring response to selection for BRD resistance could be large if the phenotype for BRD resistance was known.
