The degree of conversion (DC) is crucial in determining the mechanical and clinical performance of resin-based composites (RBCs). This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of the resin type and placement technique on the DC of RBCs (micro-hybrid, packable, hybrid, ormocer-based and flowable) polymerized with a second-generation LED light-curing unit (LCU). A total of 75 RBC samples were divided into three groups. Each RBC was placed into 4 mm diameter and 2 and 8 mm heigh Teflon molds with conventional standard, bulk, and incremental techniques (n = 5) and polymerized by LED LCU (229.153 mW/cm2) using the standard mode. After 24 h, DC was determined by FTIR spectrophotometry. The data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (p < 0.05). The DC of the RBCs varied between 62.8 and 29.2%. While the same DC was obtained for 2 mm samples at the top and the bottom surfaces, the DC of the 8 mm samples gradually diminished from the top surface to the bottom surface. Significant differences were observed in the DC of the RBCs. An optimal DC was obtained for packable, micro-hybrid and ormocer-based RBCs polymerized by LED LCU with the recommended curing times. Highlights To achieve new current collector (pantograph strip, electric brush) with easy industrialization and high strength‐toughness, carbon fiber and copper fiber reinforced phenol‐formaldehyde (Cuf/Cf/PF) composite is fabricated by over‐lapping and hot‐pressing processes. Cuf/Cf/PF composite has compact structure and good interfacial bonding between fibers and resin matrix. Cuf/Cf/PF composite is superior to carbon skateboard in terms of electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and friction behavior. As the carbon fiber content increases, fracture failure mechanism of Cuf/Cf/PF composite transforms from plastic failure into brittle fracture. Wear mechanism is studied by combining electrical contacting and sliding friction, and appropriate arc discharge (2.48%) is benefit for the resin‐based composite to form a smooth tribolayer, but high arc discharge rate (4.83%) rapidly deteriorates wear condition on the worn surface. Carbon fiber and copper fiber mixing reinforce resin‐based composite. Cuf/Cf/PF composite has high strength‐toughness and low friction. Fracture failure mode changes to brittle fracture with increasing carbon fiber. Wear mechanism includes electrical contacting and sliding friction. The efficiency of photopolymerisation significantly impacts achieving a high degree of conversion and, consequently, determines the success and strength of resin-based composite (RBC) restorations. The study aimed to measure the light irradiance of selected LED curing lamps, taking into account various exposure modes and the increased distance of the light source from the radiometer surface. The study material consisted of 21 LED polymerisation lamps of a single type (Woodpecker Medical Instrument Co., Guilin, China) with three exposure modes: standard, soft start, and pulse. During the measurement, the distance was increased from 0 mm to 8 mm, every 2 mm. Light irradiance measurements were made with a Bluephase Meter II photometer (Ivoclar Vivadent, Opfikon, Switzerland). Increasing the distance affected the soft mode the most, causing a significant drop in light irradiance on the photometer. Standard mode coped best with distance. Even at a distance of 0 mm, the soft start mode does not reach the power of the standard and pulse modes. The standard mode seems to be the most clinically effective, especially if it is planned to polymerise a material in a deep cavity. Objective: This study aimed to determine the survival of class II composite restorations in premolars and molars with and without base bulk-fill composite in general dental practice. Materials and methods: We collected data from the electronic patient files of the Public Dental Services in the City of Oulu, Finland. The timespan of data collection was from August 15th, 2002, to August 9th, 2018. The data consisted of class II composite restorations both with and without base bulk-fill composite. We compared the survival of these restorations using Kaplan–Meier survival curves, the log-rank test, survival rates, and the Wilcoxon signed ranks test. Results: We observed 297 restorations in 96 patients. The five-year survival rates for restorations with and without base bulk-fill composite were comparable in premolars (77.5% and 77.4%, respectively) but different in molars (69.9% and 57.8%, respectively, p = 0.069). In molars, the restorations with base bulk-fill composite exhibited a higher survival rate in 14 patients, whereas in 11 patients the restorations without base bulk-fill composites exhibited a higher survival rate. In 24 patients the survival rates were similar for restorations with and without the base bulk-fill composite (p = 0.246). Conclusions: The restorations with and without base bulk-fill composite had similar longevity. It is essential to understand how this uneven light distribution affects the physical properties of resin-based composites (RBCs) at various points across their surfaces. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LCU beam’s inhomogeneity on the microhardness of RBCs with different shades and thicknesses. Methods Four body (A1B, A2B, A3B, and A4B), one dentin (A3D), and one enamel shade (A3E) of RBC (Filtek Z350 XT) were examined. The specimens were fabricated in four thicknesses (1, 2, 3, and 4 mm) and subjected to a 40-second light-curing. Vickers microhardness testing was performed at the center point, and 3 mm left and right from the center at the bottom surface of each sample. The LCU beam profile was characterized using a beam profiler, while irradiance after specimen passage was measured using a spectrometer. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s post-hoc tests were used to analyze the effects of shades and thicknesses on irradiance and microhardness, respectively. A conservative approach to restoration assists in preserving the remaining tooth structure of extensively destroyed vital teeth. This case report describes a single-appointment chairside technique for placement of ceramic restorations in posterior teeth. A patient presented for treatment of her mandibular right first molar, which had a fractured resin-based composite restoration. Due to the presence of vital pulp, extent of the restoration, and presence of caries in the tooth, the following treatment plan was proposed: placement of a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic onlay fabricated with a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing workflow. After the dentist removed the restoration and performed selective caries removal, structural analysis guided the reduction of the buccal cusps. Immediate dentin sealing was performed with a 2-step self-etching adhesive system, and a 1-mm-thick layer of flowable resin-based composite was placed as a resin coating. A digital impression was obtained, the onlay restoration was designed, and a lithium disilicate block was milled and subsequently crystallized. When the onlay was completed, the tooth preparation was sandblasted, selectively etched, and coated with a universal adhesive. The intaglio surface of the onlay was cleaned and primed, the onlay was bonded with dual-cure resin cement, and occlusal adjustments were completed. Follow-up examinations at 1 and 4 months revealed the clinical success of the case. From start to finish, it takes approximately 2.5 hours to produce a single-appointment chairside restoration. The technique used in this case offers a fast-paced workflow that is comfortable and practical for the patient and provides a predictable clinical outcome without the need for a temporary restoration. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of radiant exposure and material shade on the degree of conversion (DC) and microhardness of a resin-based composite (RBC). Sixty-four RBC specimens in shades A1E (enamel) and A4D (dentin) were light cured at a calibrated exitance of 1000 mW/cm² for 5, 10, 15, or 20 seconds, resulting in radiant exposure levels of 5. 10. 15 or 20 J/cm². The DC was determined using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (n = 3 per shade per exposure level). The Knoop hardness number (KHN) was measured on the top and bottom surfaces of each specimen (n = 5 per shade per exposure level). Data were analyzed using 2- and 3-way analyses of variance and post hoc Tukey tests (α = 0.05). The RBC shade did not affect the DC (P = 0.860), and the lowest DC values were achieved with an exposure level of 5 J/cm² (P < 0.001). The shade did not affect the KHN on the top surface, but the radiant exposure level did, with the application of 5 J/cm² resulting in significantly lower values (P< 0.05). For the bottom surface, shade A1E showed significantly higher KHN values than A4D (P < 0.001). An increase in the radiant exposure led to increased DC and KHN for both shades of RBC until reaching a saturation point of 10 J/cm² for A1E and the top surface of A4D. To evaluate the influence of the barium glass (BG) filler in 3D printing resin-based composites for restorative structures. Experimental 3D printing resin-based composites were formulated with UDMA 70%wt, Bis-EMA 20%wt, and TEGDMA 10%wt. Photoinitiators TPO and DFI (2%wt) were used. BG was incorporated at 40%wt and 50%wt. 0%wt BG was used as negative control and the VarseoSmile Crownplus (Bego) was used as a commercial control. Specimens were printed using a 3D printer. Subsequently, specimens were washed and submitted to post-curing with 405 nm at 60ºC for 2 × 20 min at FormCure (FormLabs). 3D printing resin-based composites were evaluated by flexural strength, degree of conversion, softening in solvent, radiopacity, and cytotoxicity against gingival fibroblasts. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). No significant differences in flexural strength were showed between BG40% (90.5 ± 5,4 MPa), BG50% (102.0 ± 11.7 MPa) and VA (105.2 ± 11.7 MPa). Addition of 40% and 50% of BG showed no influence in the degree of conversion compared to VA (p > 0.05). All groups showed softening in solvent after immersion in ethanol (p < 0.05). All groups showed more than 1mmAl of radiopacity. BG50% showed significantly higher radiopacity (2.8 ± 0.3 mmAl) than other groups (p < 0,05). Cytotoxicity evaluation showed gingival cell viability higher than 80% for all groups. Addition of up to 50%wt of barium glass in experimental 3D printing resin-based composites showed promising results for long-term restorative structures. • 3D printing resin-based composites with up to 50 wt% barium glass were successfully formulated. • Addition of microfilled barium glass increased the degree of conversion and flexural strength of the resin-based composites. • Viability of gingival fibroblast cells was not affected by the experimental 3D printing resin-based composites. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of the polymerization distance of monowave and polywave light curing units (LCUs) on the measured irradiance relative to the value reported by the manufacturer in relation to the physical properties of resin-based composites (RBCs). Methods: Four LCUs were used: one monowave and three polywave. The irradiance was measured with a digital radiometer. Depth of cure (DC) and flexural strength (FS) tests were performed according to ISO 4049:2019 at polymerization distances of 0 mm and 5 mm. Results: The irradiance of all LCUs was higher than that reported by the manufacturer (>25-64%). The irradiance of the four LCUs was reduced when polymerization was performed at between 0 to 5 mm (paired t-test, P < 0.001). The DC at 0 mm was similar in all groups but was significantly decreased at 5 mm distance (ANOVA P < 0.001). FS showed differences among the LCUs at 0 mm (ANOVA P < 0.001) and was affected by the polymerization distance. The elastic modulus was unaffected by the LCU used or the distance (ANOVA P > 0.001). Conclusions: The LCU must be positioned as near as possible to RBCs during the polymerization process, as increased distance negatively affects the depth of cure and flexural strength. This study examines the effect of two light-curing protocols from a LED polywave light curing unit (LCU) on water sorption, solubility, and hygroscopic expansion of fast and conventional bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) aged in distilled water for 120 d. Three bulk-fill RBCs materials were studied: Tetric PowerFill® (fast photo-polymerised composite) (TPF), Tetric EvoCeram bulk-fill (EVO), and GrandioSo x-tra bulk-fill (GSO) (conventiona l photo-polymerised composites). Specimens were prepared within a 3D-printed resin mold (8-mm diameter x 4-mm height) and light-cured from one side only with 2 modes of polywave LCU (Bluephase® PowerCure): 3 s mode and for 20 s in "Standard" mode. Water sorption and solubility were measured at fixed time intervals for 120 d of distilled water storage, then reconditioned to dry to measure desorption for 75 d, all at 37 ± 1 °C. Hygroscopic (volumetric) expansion was recorded at the same time intervals up to 120 d. Data were analysed through SPSS using Two-way ANOVA, One-way ANOVA, independent t-tests, and Tukey's post-hoc correction tests (p < 0.05). TPF, when irradiated for 3 s demonstrated minimal water sorption (0.83%), solubility (1.01 μg/mm3), and least volumetric expansion (1.64%) compared to EVO and GSO. While EVO showed the highest water sorption (1.03%) and solubility (1.95 μg/mm3) at 3 s. GSO had the lowest sorption (0.67%) and (0.56%) in 3 s and 20 s protocols, respectively. Nevertheless, all the sorption and solubility data were within the ISO 4049 limits. For TPF, fast (3 s) polymerisation did not increase either water sorption or solubility, compared with 20 s irradiation. However, with the two comparative bulk-fill composites, fast cure increased water sorption by 15–25% and more than doubled solubility. These findings were consistent with the lesser volumetric expansions observed for Tetric PowerFill at both the fast and standard protocols, indicating its relative stability across polymerisation protocols. A critical examination of the literature for dental wear publications highlighted three distinct areas, clinical data, laboratory data and the simulation of the clinical situation data. The imprecision of the clinical data values from direct and indirect in vivo methods renders the clinical data compromised at best. Laboratory data showed a focus on finding a correlation between simplistic laboratory abrasive wear resistance studies and established materials science laboratory techniques, but with no actual correlation identified. Replication of the masticatory cycle in the mouth in the form of an oral wear simulator has focussed more on the wear testing devices rather than the wear quantification methods. As a result, the data acquisition variables in the x- and y-planes need to be examined to consider how they can influence the accuracy and precision of the laboratory wear measurements recorded in the dental literature. The objective of this study was to compare the mechanical properties and the degree of conversion of commercial resin-based composite materials containing a contact-killing antibacterial agent, dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM), at different concentrations, with a fluoride-releasing composite material. Materials and methods: Four groups were tested: Tetric N Ceram composite material (G1), Tetric Evo Ceram (G2), and Tetric N Ceram with the addition of contact-killing antibacterial agent DMAHDM at concentrations of 3% (G3) and 5% (G4). The mechanical properties, including flexural strength, elastic modulus, and Vickers microhardness and the degree of conversion were investigated. Results: Adding 3 % and 5 % DMAHDM resulted in flexural strength values that were comparable to Tetric Evo Ceram. Tetric N Ceram was comparable to the group containing 3 % DMAHDM (p > 0.05). However, it was significantly greater when compared to Tetric Evo Ceram (93.3 ± 9.4) and 5 % DMAHDM (p 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the degree of conversion between the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Adding 3% DMAHDM to Tetric N Ceram resulted in flexural strength values that were similar to those of Tetric N Ceram and Tetric Evo Ceram. DMAHDM did not affect the degree of conversion of Tetric N Ceram composite.

This study investigated effects of the different emittance-mode protocols from three light curing units (LCUs): (i) a Laser (Monet); (ii) a quad-wave (PinkWave); (iii) a conventional LED (Elipar S10) on the temperature rise (ΔT) and degree of conversion (DC) when photo-curing fast or conventional bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBC). The aim was to correlate ΔT and DC, and the radiant exposure delivered to RBC specimens. A 3D-printed resin mold of 4 mm depth was filled with two bulk-fill RBCs: Tetric PowerFill® (fast photo-polymerised composite) (TPF) or Tetric EvoCeram® Bulk-Fill (EVO). Three LCUs were used: (i) Monet laser for 1 s and 3 s (MONET-1 s, MONET-3 s); (ii) PinkWave quad-wave used for 3 s in Boost mode (PW-3 s) and for 20 s in standard mode (PW-20 s); (iii) Elipar S10 for 5 s (S10–5 s) and for 20 s in standard mode (S10–20 s). 2-dimensional temperature maps were obtained before, during and for 60 s after the LCU had turned off using a thermal imaging camera. Thermal changes were analysed at five depths: (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm from the top surface of the RBC). The maximum temperature rise (T max) and the mean temperature rise (ΔT) were determined. Cylindrical-shaped specimens were prepared from each material using a stainless-steel split mold (4 × 4 mm) and light-cured with the same protocols. The DC was measured for 120 s and at 1 h after LCU had turned off using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Data were analysed using Three-way ANOVA, One-way ANOVA, independent t-tests, and Tukey post-hoc tests (p < 0.05). Radiant exposures delivered by the various irradiation protocols were between 4.5–30.3 J/cm2. Short exposure times from MONET-1 s and PW-3 s delivered the lowest radiant exposures (4.5 and 5.2 J/cm2, respectively) and produced the lowest ΔT and DC. The longer exposure times in the standard modes of PW-20 s, S10–20 s, and MONET-3 s produced the highest T max , ΔT, and DC for both composites. The ΔT range among composites at different depths varied significantly (31.7–49.9 °C). DC of TPF ranged between 30–65% and in EVO between 15.3–56%. TPF had higher T max, ΔT for all depths and DC compared to EVO, across the LCU protocols (p < 0.05), except for PW-20 s and MONET-3 s. The coronal part of the restorations (1–2 mm) had the highest ΔT. There was a positive correlation between ΔT and DC at 4-mm depth after 120 s Longer, or standard, exposure times of the LCUs delivered greater radiant exposures and had higher DC and ΔT compared to shorter or high-irradiance protocols. The fast photo-polymerised RBC had comparatively superior thermal and conversion outcomes when it received a high irradiance for a short time (1–5 s) compared to the conventional Bulk-Fill RBC. The dental material industry is rapidly developing resin-based composites (RBCs), which find widespread use in a variety of clinical settings. As such, their biocompatibility has gained increasing interest. This literature review presents a summary of research into the cytotoxicity of methacrylate-based composites published from 2017 to 2023. Subject to analysis were 14 in vitro studies on human and murine cell lines. Cytotoxicity in the included studies was measured via MTT assay, LDH assay, and WST-1 assay. The QUIN Risk of Bias Tool was performed to validate the included studies. Included studies (based entirely on the results of in vitro studies) provide evidence of dose- and time-dependent cytotoxicity of dental resin-based composites. Oxidative stress and the depletion of cellular glutathione (GSH) were suggested as reasons for cytotoxicity. Induction of apoptosis by RBCs was indicated. While composites remain the golden standard of dental restorative materials, their potential cytotoxicity cannot be ignored due to direct long-term exposure. Further in vitro investigations and clinical trials are required to understand the molecular mechanism of cytotoxicity and produce novel materials with improved safety profiles. Nevertheless, the Vickers microhardness value is significantly higher when compared to 5 % DMAHDM (0.394 ± 0.021) (p < 0.05) while it was comparable to that of 3 % DMAHDM (0.484 ± 0.016) (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the degree of conversion between the groups (p > 0.05). Adding 3% DMAHDM to Tetric N Ceram resulted in flexural strength values that were similar to those of Tetric N Ceram and Tetric Evo Ceram. In the context of optimizing dental care for patients who are elderly, the purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface gloss (with a micro-area gloss meter) of, surface roughness (with a compact surface roughness measuring instrument) of, and color change (with a dental colorimeter) in two commercially available injectable resin-based composites (Estelite Universal Flow (EUF) and Beautifil Flow Plus F00 (BFP)) as well as two glass–ionomer cements (GC Fuji II LC CAPSULE (FLC) and GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA CAPSULE (FGP)), before and after dental prophylaxis. After 24 h, the surfaces of each specimen were polished at 2500 rpm with a prophy brush (Mersage Brush, Shofu) and one-step prophylaxis paste (Prophy Paste Pro, Directa): under 100 or 300 gf load, and for 10 or 30 s, 4× cycles of cleaning. After mechanical cleaning, conditions were found for a significant reduction in the gloss level (EUF, BFP, or FLC; p < 0.05) and a significant increase in surface roughness (BFP; 300 gf load, 10 s × four cycles of cleaning). Overall, the longer time or higher prophylaxis load tended to decrease the surface gloss. However, the observed change in surface roughness varied between the restorative materials. The surface roughness, surface free energy (SFE) of composites, and composite wettability by dental adhesives are determining factors in achieving a strong and durable adhesion (e.g., composite repair, luting adhesively bonded indirect restorations). In this study, the SFE of one nanohydrid and two bulk-fill composites was investigated in relation to the wetting ability of five different dental adhesives. The profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement justified that the sandblasting produced a significantly rough surface in which the different filler amounts, filler distribution, and resin-filler ratio participated. The SFE of the tested composite was between 45.65 and 49.07 mJ/m2 regardless of surface treatment. Despite the similarity in SFE, the adhesives wet the surface of the composites in different ways that were between 16.01° and 35.10°. The contact angle of solvent-free dental adhesive was lower due to sandblasting supporting the micromechanical retention. Based on our results, it was found that sandblasting, the most frequently recommended surface treatment, does not change the surface energy but causes a change in the contact angle, which can be explained by the different surface tension of the dental adhesives. As cementation represents the last stage of the work involved in making various indirect restorations (metal ceramic crowns and bridges, full ceramic crowns and bridges, inlays, onlays, and fiber posts), its quality significantly contributes to the clinical success of the therapy performed. In the last two decades, the demand for ceramic indirect restorations in everyday dental practice has considerably increased primarily due to the growing significance of esthetics among patients, but also as a result of hypersensitivity reactions to dental alloys in some individuals. In this context, it is essential to ensure a permanent and reliable adhesive bond between the indirect restoration and the tooth structure, as this is the key to the success of aesthetic restorations. Resin-based luting materials benefit from excellent optical (aesthetic) and mechanical properties, as well as from providing a strong and durable adhesive bond between the restoration and the tooth. For this reason, resin cements are a reliable choice of material for cementing polycrystalline ceramic restorations. The current dental material market offers a wide range of resin cement with diverse and continually advancing properties. In response, we wish to note that the interest in the properties of resin-based cements among clinicians has existed for many years. Yet, despite extensive research on the subject and the resulting continued improvements in the quality of these materials, there is still no ideal resin-based cement on the market. The manuscript authors were guided by this fact when writing the article content, as the aim was to provide a concise overview of the composition, properties, and current trends, as well as some future guidelines for research in this field that would be beneficial for dental practitioners as well as the scientific community. The long history of bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis GMA) as a major component in resin-based composites is also associated with numerous reports of its toxicity. Since one of the substrates used in the production of BisGMA is bisphenol A (BPA), the question of its release from materials containing this monomer is also raised. Due to the widespread use of BisGMA in modern dentistry, the aim of this narrative review is to provide and summarize information on its toxicity based on the current literature. It covers the chemical structure and possible synthesis pathways of BisGMA, as well as the toxicity of its substrates. The toxicity of the BisGMA monomer is also discussed, in particular its effect on pulp cells, the release of composite components in the gastrointestinal tract, and its metabolic degradation. BisGMA and BPA are eluted from resin composites in the oral cavity. Acute toxicity is unlikely due to the small amounts of amounts eluted, but knowledge of chronic exposure is very limited. In addition, the amount of BPA released from dental materials is incomparably low, considering the environmental exposure levels in everyday life. Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thermal cycling on the surface geometry of high-viscosity bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) compared to conventional nanohybrid composites. Materials and methods: Four conventional nanohybrid composites (Tetric EvoCeram – TEC, GrandioSO – GD, Filtek Z550 – FZ, and Ceram·X Mono – CX) and 4 high-viscosity bulk-fill composites (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill – TBF, X-tra fil – XF, Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior – FBF, and QuixFil – QF) were tested. After the 2-step polishing procedure, the samples were divided into 2 groups: control group (K) and thermal cycling group (TC). Samples from the TC were subjected to thermal cycling according to ISO 11405 (THE-1100, SD Mechatronik GmbH). Surface geometry was evaluated by profilometry (Turbowave v. 7.36, Hommel-Etamic) and scanning electron microscope – SEM (VEGA 3, Tescan Analytics). Results: The applied thermal cycles increased the surface roughness of conventional RBCs: TEC (p = 0.000007), GD (p = 0.04), and CX (p = 0.0005). A reduction in the surface roughness of bulk-fill composites was observed in the case of materials: XF (p = 0.000003) and QF (p = 0.0002). Thermal cycling was shown to alter the surface roughness of the TEC, CX, XF, and QF materials. Conclusion: The application of thermal cycling in a water environment in accordance with the ISO 11405 standard causes the degradation of the organic matrix and the exposure of filler molecules on the surface of both conventional and high-viscosity bulk-fill composites. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different powers of Er:YAG laser irradiation on the shear bond strength (SBS) of repaired CAD/CAM resin-based composite materials. A total of 180 CAD/CAM resin-based composite specimens (5 × 5 × 2 mm) were obtained (Shofu Block HC—SB; Grandio Blocs—GB). They were allocated into six groups according to surface pretreatment methods: no surface pretreatment (control), hydrofluoric acid (HF), diamond bur and 3 W, 5 W, and 7 W Er:YAG lasers (20 Hz) (n = 15). Silane and universal adhesive were applied. The repair procedure was completed with nano-ceramic composite resin (Ceram-X Sphere TEC-One). The samples were thermocycled for 10,000 cycles (5–55 °C). The SBS was evaluated with a universal test machine (1 mm/min). A 3D optic profilometer was used to assess the surface topography. Statistical analysis was performed with a two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests (p < 0.05). For SB samples, HF and diamond bur caused significantly higher SBSs than 3 W and 7 W lasers, while for GB samples, they led to a significantly higher SBS than all laser treatments. For SB samples, the 5 W laser led to the highest SBS, while for GB samples, the 7 W laser caused the highest SBS (p < 0.05). For both blocks, adhesive failure was more common for the 3 W laser, and a decrease in adhesive failures and an increase in mixed failures were observed with increasing laser irradiation. The 3D optic profilometer revealed that smoother surfaces were obtained with the 3 W laser than other laser irradiation at different powers. Pretreatment with increasing Er:YAG laser powers led to similar bond strengths to hydrofluoric-acid- and diamond-bur-treated CAD/CAM resin-based composite materials. Purpose: To compare the nanoleakage between bulkfill and incremental-fill resin composites in class II slot preparations for primary and permanent teeth restored by the snowplow technique. Materials and Methods: Class II slots were prepared in 32 M (16 exfoliated/extracted primary and 16 permanent molars). Optibond All-InOne self-etching adhesive was applied and cured. A flowable composite, Premise, was then injected into the gingival seat without curing using the snowplow technique. Cavities were restored using Sonicfill/bulkfill or microhybrid Herculite composites. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry was used to assess nanoleakage as silver deposition percentages along the axial and cervical walls. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to assess the effect of tooth type (primary and permanent teeth) and placement technique (bulkfill and incremental techniques) on nanoleakage at the axial and cervical walls. Results: Bulkfill restorations had significantly greater nanoleakage than incremental restorations at the cervical walls in primary and permanent molars (mean = 1.21 vs 0.49 in primary molars and 0.76 vs 0.24 in permanent molars). Objective: To evaluate the in vitro pulpal temperature rise (ΔT) within the pulp chamber when low‐ and high‐viscosity bulk‐fill resin composites are photo‐cured using laser or contemporary light curing units (LCUs). Materials and Methods: The light output from five LCUs was measured. Non‐retentive Class I and V cavities were prepared in one upper molar. Two T‐type thermocouples were inserted into the pulp chamber. After the PT values reached 32°C under simulated pulp flow (0.026 mL/min), both cavities were restored with: Filtek One Bulk Fill (3 M), Filtek Bulk Fill Flow (3 M), Tetric PowerFill (Ivoclar Vivadent), or Tetric PowerFlow (Ivoclar Vivadent). The tooth was exposed as follows: Monet Laser (1 and 3 s), PowerCure (3 and 20 s), PinkWave (3 and 20 s), Valo X (5 and 20 s) and SmartLite Pro (20 s). The ΔT data were subjected to one‐way ANOVA followed by Scheffe's post hoc test. Results: Monet 1 s (1.9 J) and PinkWave 20 s (30.1 J) delivered the least and the highest amount of energy, respectively. Valo X and PinkWave used for 20 s produced the highest ΔT values (3.4–4.1°C). Monet 1 s, PinkWave 3 s, PowerCure 3 s (except FB‐Flow) and Monet 3 s for FB‐One and TP‐Fill produced the lowest ΔT values (0.9–1.7°C). No significant differences were found among composites. Conclusions: Short 1‐ to 3‐s exposures produced acceptable temperature rises, regardless of the composite. Clinical Significance: The energy delivered to the tooth by the LCUs affects the temperature rise inside the pulp. The short 1–3 s exposure times used in this study delivered the least amount of energy and produced a lower temperature rise. Modern light-cured, resin-based composites are offered in a wide range of shades and translucencies. This large variation, created by varying the amount and type of pigmentation and opacifiers, is essential to enable an esthetic restoration in each patient situation, but may affect light transmission in the deeper layers during curing. We quantified optical parameters and their real-time variation during curing for a 13-shade composite palette of identical chemical composition and microstructure. Incident irradiance and real-time light transmission through 2 mm thick samples were recorded to calculate absorbance, transmittance, and the kinetic of transmitted irradiance. Data were supplemented by the characterization of cellular toxicity to human gingival fibroblasts up to 3 months. The study highlights a strong dependence of light transmission and its kinetic as a function of shade, with the largest changes occurring within the first second of exposure; the faster changes, the darker and more opaque the material. Transmission differences within progressively darker shades of a pigmentation type (hue) followed a hue-specific, non-linear relationship. Shades with similar transmittance but belonging to different hues were identified, while the corresponding kinetic was identical only up to a transmittance threshold. Dental polymers are now available as monolithic materials which can be readily used in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. Despite possessing numerous advantages over conventionally produced polymers, the polymers produced by either of these systems fail to exhibit immunity to surface microbial adhesion when introduced into the oral environment, leading to the development of oral diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze the biofilm formation of six microorganisms from the oral cavity and its correlation to the surface characteristics of CAD/CAM dental polymers. A total of ninety specimens were divided into three groups: resin-based composite, polymethyl methacrylate, and polyether ether ketone. The experimental procedure included surface roughness and water contact angle measurements, colony forming unit counting, and scanning electron microscopy analysis of biofilm formed on the surface of the tested materials. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, with a Dunn's post hoc analysis, and one way analysis of variance, with a Tukey's post hoc test; the correlation between the measurements was tested using Spearman's correlation coefficient, and descriptive statistics were used to present the data. Despite using the same manufacturing procedure, as well as the identical manufacturer's finishing and polishing protocols, CAD/CAM dental polymers revealed significant differences in surface roughness and water contact angle, and the increased values of both parameters led to an increase in biofilm formation on the surface of the materials. The goal of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of experimental resin dental composites containing a conventional photoinitiating system (camphorquinone CQ and 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)) to a photoinitiator system containing 1-phenyl-1,2 propanedione (PPD) with 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate) or acting alone phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phosphine oxide (BAPO). The manually produced composites consisted of an organic matrix: bis-GMA (60 wt. %), TEGDMA (40 wt. %), and silanized silica filler (45 wt. %). The composites contained 0.4/0.8 wt. %, 0.8/1.6 wt. %, and 1/2 wt. % of PPD/DMAEMA and another group included 0.25, 0.5, or 1 wt. % of BAPO. Vickers hardness, microhardness (in the nanoindentation test), diametral tensile strength, and flexural strength were assessed, and CIE L* a* b* colorimetric analysis was conducted for each composite produced. The highest average Vickers hardness values were obtained for the composite containing 1 wt. % BAPO (43.73 ± 3.52 HV). There was no statistical difference in the results of diametral tensile strength for the experimental composites tested. The results of 3-point bending tests were the highest for composites containing CQ (77.3 ± 8.84 MPa). Despite the higher hardness of experimental composites including PPD or BAPO, compared with composites with CQ, the overall results indicate that the composite with CQ still represents a better solution when used as a photoinitiator system. Moreover, the composites containing PPD and DMAEMA are not promising in terms of color or mechanical properties, especially as they require significantly longer irradiation times. The use of lubricants during restorative procedures is a clinically common practice to alleviate the stickiness of resin-based composite (RBCs) materials and to improve its handling. This study evaluated the effects of three modeling liquids (ML) and one universal adhesive (UA) used as lubricants during composite layering on the color stability and translucency of RBCs. Methods. The following materials were applied between every 1 mm RBC layer (total restoration height of 4 mm): GC modeling liquid (GCML, GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan), composite wetting resin (UPWR, Ultradent Products, South Jordan, UT, USA), Bisco modeling resin (BSMR, Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, IL, USA) as an ML and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (KUBQ, Kuraray Noritake Dental, Tokyo, Japan) as a UA. Lubricant-free specimens were used as the control. Color coordinates (L*, a* and b*) were recorded at baseline and after a simulation of 1 month of coffee consumption. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and a post hoc Tukey test (p < 0.05). Results. All lubricants induced a color change higher than the perceptibility threshold (ΔE00 > 0.81). GCML showed the highest color stability. The use of KUBQ resulted in significantly higher a* values (p = 0.001) at baseline and after staining. KUBQ and UPWR significantly influenced the color stability (ΔE00, p = 0.0001) after staining, overcoming the clinical acceptability threshold (ΔE00 > 1.77). Conclusions. The use of lubricants may affect color stability at baseline and after simulation of staining. Translucency was not affected at baseline nor after staining. Clinical Significance. Abstract Background To evaluate the effect of amalgam contamination, different surface treatments, and adhesive protocols on dentin microleakage to bulk-fill composite resin material. Methods Forty teeth were fixed in (polyvinyl siloxane) PVS molds, and the Class II cavities were placed on mesial and distal aspects. Thirty teeth were restored by amalgam and thermocycled to 10,000 cycles (5 and 55 °C, 30-s dwell time). The rest were restored with Filtek one Bulk Fill composite without amalgam predecessor. Samples were divided into: G1 (dentin pretreated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate), G2 (0.5 mm of dentin was removed), G3 (no surface modification), and G4 (control, where composite was bonded to sound dentin without amalgam predecessor.). Single Bond Universal Adhesive system was used to bond the composite material, by using the etch-and-rinse protocol in the mesial cavity preparation and self-etch protocol in the distal. Given the convenience of using plastics, addressing the growing concerns about their hazardous health effects is imperative. Consequently, a comprehensive risk assessment is necessary to gauge the potential harm microplastics pose. With its urgent call to action, this study aimed to investigate the indoor source and abundance of microplastics in private dental units during routine professional activities. The current analyzed microplastic quantity variations based on morphological characteristics, seasonal fluctuations and polymer-types. The polymer hazard index (PHI) was calculated to evaluate the significant human health risks posed to dental professionals by inhalation of microplastics. Dust samples were collected using a clean brush and steel pan from various flat and horizontal surfaces within each dental unit. The study found that clinical dental units had fewer microplastics (587 ± 184.9 MPs/g/day) than teaching hospitals (1083.80 ± 133.7MPs/g/day), with comparatively more abundance in winter (31 %). ATR-FTIR analysis determined polyethylene terephthalate to be a more abundant polymer (39 %). This study also found an average inhalation microplastic intake risk of 20.23 MP/g/day and 5259.85 MP/g/year for clinical and 29.45 MP/g/day and 765.12 MP/g/year for teaching hospital dental units. Female dental professionals have 1.1 times more microplastic inhalation risks than male dental professionals. According to PHI findings, overall minor to medium polymer risk was determined. In conclusion, this evidence-based research underscores the urgent need for a shift towards more sustainable practices in the dental healthcare sector. In the context of optimizing dental care for patients who are elderly, the purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface gloss (with a micro-area gloss meter) of, surface roughness (with a compact surface roughness measuring instrument) of, and color change (with a dental colorimeter) in two commercially available injectable resin-based composites (Estelite Universal Flow (EUF) and Beautifil Flow Plus F00 (BFP)) as well as two glass–ionomer cements (GC Fuji II LC CAPSULE (FLC) and GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA CAPSULE (FGP)), before and after dental prophylaxis. After 24 h, the surfaces of each specimen were polished at 2500 rpm with a prophy brush (Mersage Brush, Shofu) and one-step prophylaxis paste (Prophy Paste Pro, Directa): under 100 or 300 gf load, and for 10 or 30 s, 4× cycles of cleaning. After mechanical cleaning, conditions were found for a significant reduction in the gloss level (EUF, BFP, or FLC; p < 0.05) and a significant increase in surface roughness (BFP; 300 gf load, 10 s × four cycles of cleaning). Overall, the longer time or higher prophylaxis load tended to decrease the surface gloss. However, the observed change in surface roughness varied between the restorative materials. There was no color change post-prophylaxis.

The surface roughness, surface free energy (SFE) of composites, and composite wettability by dental adhesives are determining factors in achieving a strong and durable adhesion (e.g., composite repair, luting adhesively bonded indirect restorations). In this study, the SFE of one nanohydrid and two bulk-fill composites was investigated in relation to the wetting ability of five different dental adhesives. The profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement justified that the sandblasting produced a significantly rough surface in which the different filler amounts, filler distribution, and resin-filler ratio participated. The SFE of the tested composite was between 45.65 and 49.07 mJ/m2 regardless of surface treatment. Despite the similarity in SFE, the adhesives wet the surface of the composites in different ways that were between 16.01° and 35.10°. The contact angle of solvent-free dental adhesive was lower due to sandblasting supporting the micromechanical retention. Based on our results, it was found that sandblasting, the most frequently recommended surface treatment, does not change the surface energy but causes a change in the contact angle, which can be explained by the different surface tension of the dental adhesives. It was concluded that the dental adhesive parameters have a more important role in wettability.

The aim of this research was to compare the biomechanical properties of experimental composites containing a classic photoinitiating system (camphorquinone and 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate) or diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (TPO) as a photoinitiator. The produced light-cured composites consisted of an organic matrix-Bis-GMA (60 wt.%), TEGDMA (40 wt.%) and silanized silica filler (45 wt.%). Composites contained 0.27; 0.5; 0.75 or 1 wt.% TPO. Vickers hardness, microhardness (in the nanoindentation test), diametral tensile strength, resistance to three-point bending and the CIE L* a* b* colorimetric analysis was performed with each composite produced. The highest average Vickers hardness values were obtained for the composite containing 1 wt.% TPO (43.18 ± 1.7HV). The diametral tensile strength remains on regardless of the type and amount of photoinitiator statistically the same level, except for the composite containing 0.5 wt.% TPO for which DTS = 22.70 ± 4.7 MPa and is the lowest recorded value. The highest average diametral tensile strength was obtained for the composite containing 0.75 wt.% TPO (29.73 ± 4.8 MPa). The highest modulus of elasticity characterized the composite containing 0.75 wt.% TPO (5383.33 ± 1067.1 MPa). Composite containing 0.75 wt.% TPO has optimal results in terms of Vickers hardness, diametral tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. Moreover, these results are better than the parameters characterizing the composite containing the CQ/DMAEMA system. In terms of an aesthetic composite containing 0.75 wt.%. One technique for placing of resin-based composite for large posterior cavities is the use of short fiber-reinforced resin-based composite (SFRC) to replace dentin in a biomimetic approach. As endurance under mastication cycles is a significant consideration in the clinical success of resin-based composite posterior restorations, the use of SFRC as a base material may prevent restorative fracture due to the fibers' effectiveness in stopping cracks. This review article specifies the characteristics of SFRC and describes the major underlying mechanisms of short fiber reinforcement for resin-based composite. Insights are further taken from laboratory studies used to define the short fiber-related properties of resin-based composite and the performance of currently available materials, focusing on aspects that are relevant to the reinforcement of resin-based composite. Finally, future standpoints on the development of SFRCs with nano fibers and different resin monomers, and their role in digital dentistry, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: The treatment of dental cavities and restoration of tooth shape requires specialized materials with specific clinical properties, including being easy to model, light-cured, having a natural color, reduced shrinkage, a hardness similar to hydroxyapatite, and no leakage. The dimensional stability of resin composite materials is affected by polymerization shrinkage, degree of conversion (number of π carbon bonds converted into σ ones), thermal contraction and expansion, and interactions with an aqueous environment. (2) Methods: The materials used in our investigation were two composite resins with similar polymer matrices, but different filler (micro/nano filler). To evaluate the properties of samples, we employed the pycnometer technique (pycnometer from Paul Marienfeld Gmbh, Lauda-Königshofen, Germany), RAMAN spectroscopy technique (MiniRam Equipment from B&W Tek Inc., Plainsboro Township, NJ, USA; 785 nm laser source), SEM and EDX (FEI Inspect S.). (3) Results: The size of the filler plays an important role in the polymerization: for the pycnometric results, the larger particle filler (Sample 1) seems to undergo a rapid polymerization during the 45 s curing, while the nanoparticle filer (Sample 2) needs additional curing time to fully polymerize. This is related to a much larger porosity, as proved by SEM images. The lower degree of conversion, as obtained by Raman spectroscopy, in the same geometry means that the same volume is probed for both samples, but Sample 1 is more porous, which means less amount of polymer is probed for Sample 1. (4) Conclusions: For the two composites, we obtained a degree of conversion of 59% for Sample 1 and 93% for Sample 2, after 45 s of curing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently available direct restoration materials have been developed to have improved optical properties to interact with light in the same manner as the natural tooth. The objective of this study was to investigate the fluorescence of different enamel resin composites. In the present study, nine brands of enamel composites were tested in vitro, some of which are cited by manufacturers as having color adjustment potential. Fluorescence spectra of the composite specimens and the human natural enamel were measured with a fluorescence spectrophotometer immediately after preparation and after 6 months. Qualitative data of the specimens were also collected. Statistical analyses were conducted by Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U nonparametric tests (p < 0.05). Almost all tested resin composites presented a significant decrease in the fluorescence values after a period of 6 months. There was no significant decrease in fluorescence in the case of Harmonize™ resin composite samples, which presented the lowest initial fluorescence values. The highest value in the reduction of the initial fluorescence intensity after 6 months (22.95%) was observed for the Charisma® specimens. Composites with a color adjustment did not perform significantly better than other composites in terms of reduction in fluorescence intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) are a new class of restorative materials, and polymerization shrinkage (PS) is concerned due to their single increment up to 4 mm. The aim of this study was to evaluate the PS and shrinkage stress (SS) of bulk-fill RBCs in vitro. Three bulk-fill RBCs and three conventional non-bulk-fill RBCs were selected. The PS was determined with Acuvol volumetric shrinkage analyzer by calculating the specimen volume variation before and after light irradiation. The SS was investigated using universal testing machine method with a polymethyl methacrylate rod as a bonding substrate. The force generated during the polymerization process was detected by a load cell linked to a computer. SS was calculated by dividing the maximum stress force by the area of the rod. The mean PS of various RBCs ranged from 1.72% to 2.13%. All PS results of bulk-fill RBCs were comparable to their conventional counterparts. Sonicfill 2 (SF2) and Harmonize (HM) showed the lowest PS (p < 0.05; Tukey HSD test). Medians of SS results ranged from 0.55 MPa to 0.67 MPa. All SSs of bulk-fill RBCs were comparable to their conventional counterparts. SF2 showed significantly lower SS than Tetric N-Ceram (TN) and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (TNB) (p < 0.0083; post hoc comparisons with Bonferroni adjustments). A moderate, positive correlation was observed between PS and SS with Pearson's correlation (r = 0.446, p = 0.013). Both PS and SS are material dependent. A thin-layer of fluoride-incorporated hydroxyapatite (FAp) is useful as an acid-resistant antibacterial mineralized coating to protect a tooth surface. Recently, we achieved rapid and area-specific FAp coating on the surfaces of human tooth substrates via precoating with a light-absorbing agent, indocyanine green, followed by laser irradiation in a fluoride-containing supersaturated calcium phosphate solution. In the present study, this FAp coating technique was applied to a substrate of resin-based composite (RBC), an artificial material with no biomineral component. Similar to the case of tooth substrates, a mineralized layer consisting of needle-like FAp crystals was formed on the RBC surface after laser irradiation for 3 min. The needle-like crystals increased in size with increasing laser power. In the absence of fluoride ions in the supersaturated solution, a layer consisting of plate-like octacalcium phosphate crystals was formed on the RBC surface. The present FAp coating technique was finally applied to an RBC-restored tooth substrate. Cross-sectional analyses revealed that the boundary region between the tooth and RBC was coated and sealed with a mineralized layer. Sixty teeth were restored by amalgam and thermocycled to 10,000 cycles (5°C and 55°C, 30-second dwell time). The rest were restored with composite materials without amalgam predecessor. The samples were divided into G1 (with dentin pretreatment with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate), G2 (0.5 mm of dentin was removed), G3 (no surface modification), and G4 (samples were restored with bulk-fill composite). The bonded specimens were subdivided based on the adhesive protocol of the universal adhesive system used into etch-and-rinse and self-etch groups. Acid etching was done using 32% phosphoric acid. Composite resin was used for build-up using mold and glass. Specimens were cured and left for 24 h in distilled water at room temperature for polymerization reaction, underwent thermocycling for 5000 cycles, and were subjected to knife-edge shear bond testing. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and one-way analysis of variance followed by pairwise comparisons were used to analyze the results.Results: The highest mean SBS values were found in the control group where acid etching was used (24.46± 2.24 MPa), followed by self-etching in the same group (21.92± 2.54 MPa). Lower SBS values were associated with the amalgam-contaminated group. The lowest values were found in the dentin refreshment group when the self-etching mode was used (13.59± 1.73 MPa). Chlorhexidine treatment improved the mean SBS value compared with the no treatment or dentin refreshment groups for both adhesive protocols.Conclusion: Amalgam contamination may affect SBS values. Acid etching improved SBS for non-contaminated dentin. Background: To evaluate the effect of amalgam contamination, different surface treatments, and adhesive protocols on dentin microleakage to bulk-fill composite resin material. Methods: Forty teeth were fixed in (polyvinyl siloxane) PVS molds, and the Class II cavities were placed on mesial and distal aspects. Thirty teeth were restored by amalgam and thermocycled to 10,000 cycles (5 and 55 °C, 30-s dwell time). The rest were restored with Filtek one Bulk Fill composite without amalgam predecessor. Samples were divided into: G1 (dentin pretreated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate), G2 (0.5 mm of dentin was removed), G3 (no surface modification), and G4 (control, where composite was bonded to sound dentin without amalgam predecessor.). Single Bond Universal Adhesive system was used to bond the composite material, by using the etch-and-rinse protocol in the mesial cavity preparation and self-etch protocol in the distal. Specimens underwent thermocycling for 5000 cycles, then embedded in silver nitrate and sectioned for stereomicroscope examination. Descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney U test, and Kruskal–Wallis test were used to analyze the results at p < 0.05. Results: The highest microleakage score values (4.00) were found in the G2, and G4 in etch-and-rinse protocol. While the lowest scores were found in G2 when using self-etching protocol (1.5). Lower microleakage values were associated with the chlorhexidine treatment group for both adhesive protocols. No significant differences were found between amalgam contaminated and non-contaminated groups. Conclusions: Amalgam contamination did not affect microleakage. Self-etching adhesive protocol significantly reduced microleakage for all groups irrespective of the surface treatment. To evaluate two-body wear (2BW) and three-body wear (3BW) of different CAD/CAM and direct restorative materials against zirconia using a dual-axis chewing simulator and an ACTA wear machine. 3 CAD-CAM resin-based composite or polymer infiltrated ceramic network blocs, 1 lithium disilicate CAD-CAM ceramic (LS 2), 3 direct resin composites, amalgam and bovine enamel were tested. For 2BW, 8 flat specimens per material were produced, grinded, polished, stored wet (37 °C, 28d) and tested (49 N, 37 °C, 1,200,000 cycles) against zirconia. For 3BW, specimens (n = 10) were stored accordingly, and tested against a zirconia antagonist wheel (3Y-TZP, d = 20 mm, h = 6 mm; 200,000 cycles, F = 15 N, f = 1 Hz, 15% slip) in millet seed suspension. Wear resistance was analysed in a 3D optical non-contact profilometer, measuring vertical wear depth and volume loss for 2BW and mean wear depth and roughness (R a) for 3BW. Vickers hardness (15 s, HV2) was measured. Statistical analysis was performed using non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney-U test, p < 0.05). 2BW and 3BW have a different impact on material surfaces. Similar wear resistance was observed for direct and indirect resin based materials with analogous filler configurations in both methods. Bovine enamel exhibited the best wear resistance in 2BW, but the least wear resistance in 3BW against zirconia. Regarding 2BW, a direct/indirect composite material pair of the same manufacturer showed the significantly highest mean volume losses (2.72/2.85 mm³), followed by LS 2 (1.41 mm³). LS 2 presented the best wear resistance in 3BW (mean wear depth 2.85 µm), combined with the highest mean Vickers hardness (598 MPa). No linear correlation was found between Vickers hardness and both wear testing procedures. The zirconia antagonists showed no recordable signs of wear. Dental restorative materials behave differently in 2BW and 3BW laboratory testing. Vickers hardness testing alone cannot hold for a correlation with wear behavior of materials. Micromorphological investigation of material composition can reveal insights in wear mechanisms related to variations in filler technologies. • Materials respond differently under two- and three-body wear loading conditions. • Surface hardness is no general predictor of wear resistance of dental materials. • Wear of resin-based composites is mainly influenced by filler configuration. • Polished zirconia creates substantial antagonist wear on various dental materials.
