Objective: Given the importance of preserving caries-affected dentin (CAD) in conservative dentistry, the shear bond strength (SBS) of different resin cements to CAD has been investigated. Here, we aimed to compare the SBS and remineralizing effect of a calcium silicate (TheraCem) and conventional self-adhesive cement (Panavia SA) on the SBS of CAD., Materials and Methods: Forty-eight extracted third molars (24 sound and 24 CAD) were used. In each group, 12 teeth were prepared for bonding to TheraCem or Panavia SA. After removal of the enamel and caries, resin composite cylinders were luted on the prepared dentin. After 28 days of storage in the artificial saliva, SBS was measured and the failure mode analysis was investigated. The images of fractured sections were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray to evaluate the Ca/P weight ratio., Results: SBS of CAD and sound dentin was not different when cemented with TheraCem (9.56 ± 4.51 vs. 9.17 ± 2.76, p = .806), but the CAD showed significantly lower SBS to Panavia SA (9.4 ± 2.36 vs. 7.39 ± 2.18, p = .015). The Ca/P ratio in CAD was significantly higher when bonded to both TheraCem and Panavia-SA than that of the controls (p = .001); however, this ratio was not different for those bonded to TheraCem compared to Panavia SA., Conclusions: Based on our results, TheraCem as a calcium silicate cement shows better SBS to attach the restoration to CAD as compared to Panavia SA. Obliteration and mineralization of the dentinal tubules in TheraCem were also higher than in Panavia SA. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of tannic acid and quercetin on the immediate microshear bond strength (μSBS) of two resin cements to dentin after internal bleaching., Materials and Methods: The access cavity in eighty extracted maxillary incisors was internally bleached except the control groups. The labial surfaces were ground to expose a flat dentin surface. The specimens were randomly divided into eight groups (n=10) as follows: 1) Control/Dou; Doulink without bleaching, 2) Bl/Dou; Bleaching+Doulink, 3) Bl+Ta/ Dou; Bleaching+Tannic acid+Doulink, 4) Bl+Qu/Dou;Bleaching+Quercetin+Doulink, 5) Control/ PSA; Panavia SA without bleaching, 6) Bl/PSA;Bleaching+Panavia SA, 7) Bl+Ta/ PSA; Bleaching+Tannic acid+Panavia SA, 8) Bl+Qu+PSA; Bleaching+Quercetin+Panavia SA. After 24 hours, the μSBS of the specimens was tested and the obtained data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tamhane test (p⟨0.05)., Results: The µSBS of Doulink groups were higher than the PSA groups (p⟨0.001). The μSBS of Bl+Ta/Dou and Bl+Qu/ Dou groups did not differ from Bl/Dou (p⟩0.05). The μSBS of Bl+Ta/PSA group was statistically significantly higher than the Bl/PSA group (p⟨0.001). There was no significant difference between µSBS of Bl+Qu/PSA and Bl/PSA groups (p=0.39)., Conclusions: TA partially reversed the negative influence of internal bleaching on the µSBS of Panavia SA while quercetin did not increase the bond strength of both resin cements., (Copyright© 2022 Dennis Barber Ltd.)

This study evaluated the influence of operator skill on the shear bond strength of a self-adhesive resin cement to dentin after different adhesive treatments. Flat dentin surfaces were prepared on 160 extracted molars. The teeth were distributed evenly (n = 80) to 2 groups based on the operator's skill (undergraduate dental student vs operative dentistry specialist). The teeth in each operator group were distributed into 5 groups based on pretreatments used before they were cemented to indirect composite resin cylinders with Panavia SA Luting Plus resin cement. The operators prepared the dentin surfaces for bonding according to the following pretreatment groups: 1, no treatment; 2, phosphoric acid etching; 3, Clearfil Universal Bond in etch-and-rinse mode; 4, Clearfil Universal Bond in self-etching mode; and 5, Clearfil SE Bond 2-step adhesive. After cementation was performed by the 2 operator groups, shear bond strength testing was performed, and data were analyzed with 2-way analysis of variance. The effects of operator skill and surface pretreatment and their cumulative effect were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The shear bond strength of the control group in the student group was significantly greater than that of the specialist group (P = 0.02). In group 5 (2-step adhesive), the shear bond strength of the specialist group was significantly greater than that of the student group (P < 0.001). The use of acid etching and the 3 adhesive treatments improved the bonding ability of resin cement for the expert group. This positive effect was observed only in the etch-and-rinse and self-etching modes for the student group. Extensive clinical experience did not have a positive effect on the bonding effectiveness of resin cement with no pretreatment, while the expert group showed better results in applying this cement with a 2-step adhesive pretreatment.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of alloy/zirconia primer and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)-containing resin layer treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin to zirconia after aging., Materials and Methods: Sixty zirconia (Y-TZP) blocks were air-abraded (35-µm Al 2 O 3 ) and divided into 6 experimental groups (n = 10) in terms of primer/resin layer as follows: (1) control, without any primer or resin; (2) AP, Alloy Primer; (3) ZPP, Z-Prime Plus; (4) PL/ZPP, Z-Prime Plus with light polymerization; (5) AP+SEB, Alloy Primer along with light-cured bonding resin of a self-etch adhesive system (SE Bond); and (6) ZPP+SEB, Z-Prime Plus with SE Bond. After composite resin placement and light polymerization, the specimens were stored in distilled water (37°C for 4 months) and thermal-cycled for 6000 cycles. The SBS was tested with a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis of the SBS data was performed with one-way ANOVA, followed by HSD Tukey test (α = 0.05)., Results: There were significant differences between the groups (p < 0.001, F = 116.5). All the groups revealed significantly higher SBS than the control (p < 0.001). ZPP+SEB group exhibited the highest SBS (16.14 ± 2.52 MPa) and AP group the lowest SBS (7.00 ± 1.97 MPa) among experimental groups; both had significant differences with the other groups (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between ZPP, PL/ZPP, and AP+SEB groups (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: The bond strength between zirconia ceramic and composite resin was affected by different primers/resin layer. Applying an MDP-containing resin layer along with both primers resulted in significant enhancement of SBS. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the application sequence of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) paste (MI paste) on shear bond strength (SBS) of 2 etch-and-rinse resin cements to dentin., Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human maxillary premolars were cut to expose the mid-coronal dentin surfaces. The teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 10), based on the resin cement used and CPP-ACP application. In groups 1-3, Excite DSC/Variolink II and in groups 2-4, One-Step Plus/Duolink was bonded to dentin. There were 3 groups for each cement as follows: with no treatment as a control; 3-minute application of CPP-ACP before acid etching (CPP-ACP/Etching); 3-minute application of CPP-ACP after acid etching (Etching/CPP-ACP). After storage in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours, SBS test was performed. Data were analyzed with 2-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05)., Results: CPP-ACP application on the dentin before and after acid etching significantly decreased the SBS of OS/Duolink (13.60 and 14.71 MPa, respectively vs. control; 21.21 MPa, p < 0.001); however, it did not influence the SBS of Excite DSC/Variolink II (25.14 MPa) before acid etching (27.37 MPa) or after acid etching (26.41 MPa, p > 0.388). The application sequence of CPP-ACP did not influence the SBS of etch-and-rinse resin cements evaluated., Conclusion: CPP-ACP applications may lower the SBS in some etch-and-rinse resin cements, and timing of applications makes no difference., (© 2019 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the sealing ability of three different resin cements for the luting of a porcelain laminate veneer (PLV) to the enamel and dentin of fluorosed teeth., Materials and Method: Thirty incisors with moderate fluorosis according to the Thylstrup-Fejerskov Index (TFI = 4 to 6) received a veneer preparation with dentin margins at the gingival third. The IPS Empress (Ivoclar Vivadent) veneers were luted to the teeth of three groups (n = 10) using three different resin cements: Group 1: Excite DSC/Variolink II - etch-and-rinse (E&R), Group 2: ED Primer II/Clearfil Esthetic - self-etch (SE), Group 3: RelyX Unicem - self-adhesive (SA). After 24 h of water storage and thermocycling, marginal microleakage was evaluated on three slices from each tooth using the dye penetration technique under a digital microscope., Results: Data (microleakage percentage over the entire preparation length) were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (P < 0.05). Mean microleakage percentage was 0.8% to 18% at the enamel and dentin margins, respectively. On the enamel, Group 1 (E&R) exhibited significantly less microleakage compared to Groups 2 (SE; P = 0.03), and 3 (SA; P = 0.005). On the dentin, microleakage in Group 3 (SA) was significantly less than that in Groups 1 (E&R, P = 0.001), and 2 (SE; P = 0.03). The difference between the latter two groups was significant, with Group 1 (E&R) exhibiting the greatest microleakage., Conclusion: The best enamel and dentin sealing of the cemented veneers was obtained with the E&R and SA luting agents, respectively.

This study evaluated the effect of dentin surface treatment on the micromorphology and shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhering flowable composite, Vertis Flow (VF). Flat dentin surfaces obtained from sixty extracted human molars were divided into six groups (n = 10) according to the following surface treatments: (G1) control, no treatment; (G2) self-etching adhesive, Optibond All-in-One; (G3) phosphoric acid etching for 15 s; (G4) polyacrylic acid for 10 s; (G5) EDTA for 60 s; and G6) sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 15 s. After restoration using VF, SBS was measured in MPa. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tamhane test (α = 0.05). Six additional specimens were prepared for scanning electron microscopy analysis. SBS was significantly affected by surface treatment (P < 0.001). SBS of six groups from the highest to the lowest were as follows: (G3) 13.5(A); (G5) 8.98(AB); (G2) 8.85(AB); (G4) 8.21(AB); (G1) 7.53(BC); and (G6) 4.49(C) (groups with the same superscript letter were statistically similar). Morphological analysis revealed numerous long resin tags at the adhesive interface for acid-etched group, with a few short resin tags for the control group and small gap formation for NaOCl-treated group. Purpose: This study investigated whether the tubular occluding effect of oxalate desensitizer (OX) during adhesive cementation (three resin cements) influenced fracture resistance of teeth restored with adhesive inlays., Materials and Methods: Ninety intact maxillary premolars were randomly divided into 9 groups of 10 each. The two control groups were Gr 1, intact teeth and Gr 2, mesio-occlusodistal preparation only. In six experimental groups, the composite inlays were cemented with ED Primer II/Panavia F 2.0, Excite DSC/Variolink II, and One-Step Plus/Duolink according to manufacturers' instructions (Groups 3, 5, and 7, respectively) or with OX during cementation (Groups 4, 6, and 8, respectively). In Group 9, inlays were cemented with a resin cement without adhesive system. After thermocycling, fracture strength was tested. The data were analyzed using two-way and one-way ANOVA and LSD post hoc tests (α = 0.05)., Results: Fracture resistance of the six groups were significantly affected by OX (p = 0.002) but not by the resin cement type (p > 0.05). The interaction of the two factors was statistically significant (p = 0.052). A statistically significant difference between all groups was found (p < 0.001). Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the microleakage of 3 one-bottle adhesives with different solvents added under the fissure sealant on intact etched enamel., Methods: A total of 100 sound mandibular third molars were randomly divided into 5 groups (N=20). Occlusal pits and fissures were sealed with an unfilled fissure sealant (FS) material. Study groups included: (1) phosphoric acid etching + FS (control); (2) acid etching + Adper Single Bond 2 + FS; (3) acid etching + OptiBond Solo Plus + FS; (4) acid etching + One-Step Plus + FS; and (5) no pretreatment (FS alone). After aging and thermocycling, specimens were placed in 0.5% fuchsin, sectioned, and evaluated by digital microscope. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests at a significance of P<.05., Results: Group 5 (FS alone) showed the greatest microleakage, which was significantly different from the other groups (P<.05). Group 4 showed the lowest microleakage, followed by groups 3 and 2. No significant differences existed among groups 1 to 4 (P>.05)., Conclusions: Conventional acid etching alone or with a one-bottle adhesive that contained different solvents of acetone, ethanol, or ethanol/water combination yielded similar sealing results in sealant therapy.

Purpose: This study investigated whether the tubular occluding effect of oxalate desensitizer (OX) during adhesive cementation improved bonding of a self-etch and two etch-and-rinse resin cements to dentin after 6 months., Methods: A flat dentin surface was prepared on 120 extracted premolars, which were randomly divided into six groups of 20 teeth each according to the adhesive resin cement system used: ED primer II/Panavia F2.0, Excite DSC (Ex DSC)/Variolink II, and One-Step Plus (OS Plus)/Duolink, with or without OX (BisBlock) application. After cementation of an indirect composite rod, two subgroups (n=10) were tested after 24 h and 6 months of water storage plus thermocycling, and shear bond strengths were recorded in MPa., Results: Statistical tests showed that although oxalate had a borderline significant negative effect on initial bonding of ED primer II/Panavia F2.0, it significantly improved bonding durability (p<0.05). OX severely compromised the initial bond strength of Ex DSC/Variolink II (p<0.001) but had no effect on the reduction in bonding after aging. OX was compatible with OS Plus/Duolink and did not affect the loss of bonding strength after 6 months (p>0.05)., Conclusion: Combining an oxalate desensitizer with three types of resin cements had different effects on bond strength to dentin after aging, depending on the interaction of oxalate with the adhesive system associated to the resin cement., (Copyright © 2011 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of resin coating and chlorhexidine (CH) on microleakage of two resin cements (Panavia F2.0, Nexus 2) after water storage., Materials and Methods: Class V cavities were prepared on the facial and lingual surfaces of 120 intact human molars with gingival margins placed 1 mm below the cementoenamel junction. Indirect composite inlays were fabricated. The specimens were randomly assigned into six groups (n = 40). Indirect composite inlays (Gradia) were cemented as follows: Group 1 (control): inlays were cemented with Panavia F2.0 according to the manufacturer's instructions. Group 2: the ED-primed (ED Primer, Kuraray Dental, Tokyo, Japan) dentin was coated with a resin layer before cementation of the inlays with Panavia F2.0. Group 3: a 2% CH solution was applied before bonding with Panavia F2.0. Group 4: after CH application, the primed dentin was coated with a resin layer before cementation with Panavia F2.0. Group 5: (control) after applying Optibond Solo Plus, the inlays were cemented with Nexus 2. Group 6: after etching, CH was applied, and cementation was performed similarly to group 5. Half the specimens in each group were stored in distilled water for 24 hours, while the other half were stored in distilled water for 6 months. After storage, the teeth were placed in 1% methylene blue dye for 24 hours, sectioned, and evaluated under a 20× stereomicroscope. Dye penetration was scored using 0 to 3 criteria. Data were analyzed using nonparametric tests., Results: Resin coating of ED primer for Panavia F2.0 significantly reduced microleakage at the gingival margins after 6 months (p < 0.05). CH application in Panavia F2.0 did not lead to a significant difference in the microleakage at both margins, after 24 hours and 6 months (p > 0.05). The application of CH showed significantly less microleakage than that of the control group at the gingival margins of Nexus 2 after 6 months. In general, gingival margins showed more microleakage than occlusal margins., Conclusion: An additional resin layer applied to a self-etch cement can improve long-term dentinal sealing for indirect restorations, while CH cannot; however, CH reduces gingival microleakage in an etch-and-rinse cement after aging., (© 2011 by The American College of Prosthodontists.)

This study evaluated the effect of delayed placement of composite and double application of adhesive on microleakage of two-step, total-etch (single-bottle) adhesives. Standard Class V cavities were prepared in 140 sound premolars and randomly assigned into 10 groups (n = 14). Excite, Optibond Solo Plus, and Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (as a control) were used. After the first layer of single-bottle adhesive was photocured, the adhesive was reapplied and photocured in four of the groups. A microhybrid composite was applied in five of the groups immediately after the adhesive was photocured; in the other five groups, the composite was placed after a three-minute delay. After 24 hours of storage in distilled water and thermocycling, the samples were placed in 1% methylene blue. All samples then were sectioned longitudinally and evaluated for microleakage at the occlusal and gingival margins under a stereomicroscope at 20x magnification. Data were analyzed using nonparametric tests. Delayed placement of composite significantly increased leakage at the gingival margins when single-bottle adhesives were used (p < 0.05). Double application of the single-bottle adhesives significantly reduced leakage at the gingival margin when placement of the composite was delayed. There was no significant difference between single and double application when the composite was placed immediately (p < 0.05).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chlorhexidine [CH] on dentin bond strength of three resin cements after 1 year of water storage., Methods: A flat middle dentin surface was prepared on 120 extracted premolars. The teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups of 20 specimens each according to the resin cement used: Panavia F2.0, Variolink II, and RelyX Unicem, with or without CH application. After cementation of an indirect composite rod [Z250], one subgroup [n=10] was tested after 24h in water at 37 ° C and the other subgroup [n=10] was tested after 1 year storage in water plus thermocycling. A shear bond strength [SBS] test was performed. The data [in MPa] were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey tests [P<0.05]., Results: Three-way ANOVA [resin cement, CH and time] indicated that Variolink II had the highest strength [16.65 ± 3.60] and RelyX Unicem had the lowest strength [9.30 ± 4.07]. Chlorhexidine application increased SBS [13.31 ± 4.61] compared to samples without CH [12.16 ± 5.04] [P=0.04]. Initial SBS [15.63 ± 4.37] was significantly higher than after 1 year of storage [9.85 ± 3.36] [P<0.001]. Separate two-way ANOVA for 24-h and 1-year data showed that cement had a significant effect but CH and its interaction had no significant effect at 24h, whereas at 1 year the two factors and their interaction differed significantly [P ≤ 0.001]., Conclusions: Chlorhexidine 2% can diminish the loss of bonding effectiveness over time associated to etch-and-rinse and self-etch cements, although it appears not have any effect on self-adhesive cement., (Copyright © 2010 Japan Prosthodontic Society. This study examined the effect of different light activation modes for light-cured resin-based composites on the shear bond strength to dentin of two one-bottle adhesives with differing acidity. In this experimental study, a flat middle dentin surface was prepared on 110 extracted sound molars using a 600-grit polish paper. The teeth were then randomly divided into 10 equal groups (n = 11). One-Step Plus (OS) and Prime & Bond NT (P&B NT) were used according to the manufacturer's instruction with their respective composite (Aelite, Spectrum TPH) applied and cured using five different light-activation modes: 1. Conventional (CO): 600 mW/cm2 (40 seconds) 2. Soft-Start I (SSI): 100 mW/cm2 (10 seconds) 600 mW/cm2 (30 seconds) 3. Soft-Start II (SSII): 200 mW/cm2 (10 seconds), 600 mW/cm2 (30 seconds) 4. Pulse-Delay I (PDI): 100 mW/cm2 (3 seconds), 3-minute delay, 600 mW/cm2 (37 seconds) 5. Pulse-Delay II (PDII): 200 mW/cm2 (3 seconds), 3-minute delay, 600 mW/cm2 (37 seconds) After 24 hours storage in distilled water at room temperature, a shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed using an Instron machine at 1 mm/minute and the results were recorded in MPa. Statistical analysis included two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (p < 0.05). The highest SBS (MPa) was shown in the OS conventional group (19.62 +/- 2.21) and the lowest SBS was shown in P&B NT, PDII (5.93 +/- 1.79). In each group of five curing modes, the mean SBS for P&B NT was significantly lower than OS: conventional mode--P&B NT (17.27 +/- 1.98) vs OS (19.62 +/- 2.21); SSI-P&B NT (10.84 +/- 2.82) vs OS (13.09 +/- 1.24); SSII - P&B NT (14.78 +/- 1.63) vs OS (18.79 +/- 1.57); PDI-P&B NT (5.93 +/- 1.79) vs OS (11.97 +/- 2.59) and PDII-P&B NT (11.82 +/- 1.24) vs OS (16.00 +/- 1.62) (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). For each of the adhesives, the ranking of SBS was as follows: CO > SSII > PDII > SSI > PDI, with the two-paired comparisons of curing modes being significantly different (p < 0.05). The results of the current study indicated that the bond strength of P&B NT might be compromised by the higher acidity of this adhesive compared to OS during each curing mode, especially PDI. The conventional mode was least affected by the acidity of the adhesive.
