Summarization: Objective of the study is to implement the commercially available software tools to the basic reservoir engineering problems in a real field case. Eclipse data set of Norne field, in the Norwegian sea, has been used for the study that is publicly available on https://opm-project.org/?page_id=559. Eclipse 100 and tNavigator have been used to run the simulations for verifying the feasibility of application of the ASP flooding for improving recovery. Norne benchmark case is a real field black-oil model for an oil field in the Norwegian Sea. The model included dissolved gas, vaporized oil, transmissibility multipliers, pressure-dependent porosity and transmissibility, end-point scaling for relative permeability and capillary pressure. History-matching of production and pressures has already been done and well controls that change throughout the simulation schedule have also been included in the model. Application of ASP flooding technique has been simulated in E100 and tNavigator as part of the study purpose. As matched in the history, water injection starts very early in the field. There are total 36 wells of which 9 are injection wells and the remaining 27 are production wells. Five wells are exclusively water injection wells and they have been used to inject ASP slugs along with the water. In Eclipse E100, alkaline model is a simple model that does not take any chemical reactions into consideration, but when used in conjunction with surfactant and polymer to perform an Alkaline-Surfactant- Polymer (ASP) flooding, the alkaline can reduce the adsorption of both surfactant and polymer on the rock surface, therefore enhancing the effectiveness of the surfactant and polymer drive. Eclipse and tNavigator work in the same format of E100 text pad code. Results from the both software are comparable. tNavigator has a very good graphical user interface to interact with the tool and all the graphs are defaulted and simultaneously can be viewed as the simulation time progress and it is faster than the Eclipse 100.

Summarization: The optimization of oil production is a tedious and computationally intensive pro- cess that requires the solution of time dependent nonlinear set of partial differ- ential equations describing the flow of hydrocarbons in anisotropic porous me- dia. Optimization of production is usually performed using either gradient free techniques like genetic algorithms, particle swarm algorithms, or gradient-based techniques where the gradients are computed through the solution of the adjoint problem. A gradient-based optimization method, in which the gradient is com- puted using an adjoint formulation, is often the method of choice since in con- trast to numerical perturbation techniques that require as many objective function evaluations as the number of control parameters, the gradient using adjoint-based techniques is obtained only at a small fraction of the time spent for the evaluation of the objective function. It is well known that for non-convex optimisation prob- lems, gradient-based techniques are likely to get trapped in poor local optima. A common practise is to lunch several independent optimisation runs from different initial guesses or to combine ideas from gradient-free algorithms with gradient- based to benefit from the merits of both. An adequate sampling of the search space would require an intractable number of simulations and it is thus impossible. The aim of this work is to exploit an observation in homogeneous reservoirs, where the global optimum, when optimising cumulative oil recovery, is usually achieved from practically any initial guess. This observation suggest to optimize cumulative oil by adopting a “geology continuation” method. In this novel ap- proach the porosity and permeability fields, gradually switch from some average homogeneous values chosen heuristically for the particular benchmark, to the in- homogeneous geological properties characterizing the reservoir. The optimal con- trols from each step become the initial controls to the next step. In addition instead of maximizing the cumulative oil we suggest to minimize mod- ified versions of the residual oil function which are likely to be more convex and thus less likely to lead in poor local optima.

Summarization: Two different methods are used for solving the phase behavior problem during reservoir simulation applied to hydrocarbon reservoirs; the black oil Tables and the compositional approaches. The black oil Tables simulators use Tables of volumetric factors (solution gas-oil ratio, oil formation volume factor, gas formation volume factor, oil content) versus pressure and by performing interpolation at each pressure step the produced volumes are calculated. On the other hand, the compositional simulators, perform the phase behavior calculations by using an equation of state so as to calculate the equilibrium phases and their properties at different operating conditions. The main advantages of the black-oil Tables simulators are that they require low calculation (CPU) time low computer memory. On the other hand, compositional simulators are more accurate and can perform better with volatile oils and gas condensates. Nevertheless, operators still use black-oil simulators to simulate volatile oils and gas condensates, valuing thus more the speed of calculations as the expense of accuracy. The question is how much information is lost with respect to the compositional approach and how much off the black oil tables approach reservoir simulation predictions can be. For this thesis, the commercial software IMEX and GEM of Computer Modeling Group has been used. These models are presented in detail and the different options that they offer are discussed. The objective of this work was to discuss to present the available models of the black oil tables and compositional simulators as well as their difference in predictions and to assess their differences in predicting the reservoir production performance. A simple reservoir containing volatile oil was modeled and its depletion was simulated using both simulators and their results were compared. The two simulators exhibited a small divergence between their predictions for the initial volumes in place and the simulation runs. However, the compositional simulator is thought to be more accurate than the black oil simulator in its predictions as it is a compositional simulator. Moreover, it was found that the black oil simulator calculated almost the same amount of initial volumes in place, whereas it over-predicted the oil recovery and the oil cumulative production.

Summarization: This diploma thesis project will focus on the comparison of two black-oil simulation software. The simulators under study are the widely known Eclipse 100 and the relatively new tNavigator ones. All commercial simulators available in the market are supposed to solve the same differential equation problem using the same approach (finite volumes). However, the performance of them might exhibit significant differences even treating exactly the same simulation problem. Those differences might concern the computing time and/or the obtained results. In this work we started with simple Cartesian reservoir models and compared their performance against the simulators under study. Since the starting models were of low complexity and the background formulation of both simulators was supposed to be the same the results in terms of run time and simulators predictions should match. By verifying that it was shown that conditions for fair comparison were established and the next comparison step was performed with models of higher complexity. This allowed those fine differences in simulators to impact the prediction outcome, as well as runtime of simulation. As the general comparison strategy of increasing the model complexity is suitable for executing convergence study, this was done along the way. So, became able to evaluate how these two simulators are dealing with error introduced by spatial and temporal discretization as a part of numerical approximation of flow governing equations. The output data consisting of key parameters (oil/water production rate, average reservoir pressure and cumulative productions) for the respective model were compared along with CPU runtimes. By finalizing this study, a more solid judgement on performance of these two simulators on the field of black-oil simulations has been built. Περίληψη: Η παρούσα μεταπτυχιακή εργασία επικεντρώνεται στη σύγκριση δύο λογισμικών προσομοίωσης ταμιευτήρων πετρελαίου. Οι προσομοιωτές που μελετώνται είναι ευρέως γνωστοί, ο ένας είναι το λογισμικό Eclipse E100 και το σχετικά καινούργιο λογισμικό tNavigator. Όλοι οι εμπορικοί προσομοιωτές οι οποίοι είναι διαθέσιμοι στην αγορά υποτίθεται πως λύνουν το ίδιο πρόβλημα διαφορικών εξισώσεων χρησιμοποιώντας την ίδια προσέγγιση (μέθοδος πεπερασμένου όγκου). Παρόλα αυτά, η απόδοση μεταξύ αυτών, μπορεί να διαφέρει σημαντικά ακόμα και όταν αντιμετωπίζονται τα ίδια ακριβώς προβλήματα προσομοίωσης. Αυτές οι διαφορές ίσως αφορούν τον χρόνο υπολογιμού ή/και τα τελικά αποτελέσματα. Σε αυτή την μεταπτυχιακή εργασία, ξεκινήσαμε με απλά καρτεσιανά μοντέλα ταμιευτήρων και συγκρίναμε την αποδόση τους στους υπό μελέτη προσομοιωτές. Εφόσον, τα μοντέλα αυτά ήταν μικρής πολυπλοκότητας και το πλαίσιο εξισώσεων υποτίθεται είναι ίδιο, τα αποτελέσματα τους όσον αφορά τον χρόνο υπολογισμού και τις προβλέψεις προβλεπόταν να συμπίπτουν. Εφόσον επιβεβαιώθηκε πως αυτό επιτευχθεί, θα αποτελεί την ένδειξη πως οι συνθήκες για δίκαιη σύγκριση των προσομοιωτών έχουν καθιερωθεί και το επόμενο βήμα αυξανόμενης πολυπλοκότητας μοντέλων μπορεί να εκτελεστεί. Η μέθοδος αυτή προβλέπεται να μπορέσει να επιτρέψει σε αυτές τις λεπτές διαφορές των προσομοιωτών να επηρεάσουν την έκβαση των προβλέψεων, όπως επίσης και τον χρόνο υπολογισμού. Επειδή αυξάνοντας την πολυπλοκότητα των μοντέλων αποτελεί μία γενική μεθόδο σύγκρισης για να εκτελεστεί η μελέτη της σύγκλισης, αυτό θα συνεχιστεί καθ'όλη την διάρκεια της εργασίας. Έτσι, είμαστε σε θέση να εκιμήσουμε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι προσομοιώτες αντιμετωπίζουν με το σφάλμα που εισάγεται λόγω χωρικής και χρονικής διακριτοποίησης ως μέρος αριθμητικών προσεγγίσεων για τις εξισώσεις ρόης που λαμβάνουν χώρα. Τα δεδομένα που προκύπτουν συνιστούν παραμέτρους-κλειδί (ρυθμός παραγωγής πετρελαίου/νερουύ, μέση πίεση ταμιευτήρα και αθροιστική παραγωγή) για τα αντιστοιχα μοντέλα, συγκρίθηκαν μαζί με τον χρόνο υπολογισμού CPU. Ολοκληρώνοντας την εργασία αυτή, αναμένουμε να δημιουργήσουμε ακέραιη άποψη για την απόδοση των δύο προσομοιωτών στο πεδίο της black-oil μεθόδου προσομοίωσης.

Summarization: The use of Partitioning Interwell Tracer Test is examined in the current thesis through the scope of black oil and chemical simulators (ECLIPSE and UTCHEM). Tracer tests have been thoroughly applied over the past decades as a means of reservoir characterisation. Partitioning Interwell Tracer Test is considered as a useful method for estimating oil volume and oil saturation, particularly before the application of Enhanced Oil Recovery methods, where the remaining oil saturation is close at its residual value. The accuracy of such predictions is investigated through the usage of ECLIPSE and UTCHEM simulators. Also, a sensitivity analysis to oil saturation distribution is conducted with regards residual oil saturation estimations. As chemical compounds, it is important to determine whether tracers’ transportation in the porous medium is sufficiently described through the equations that are provided in the aforementioned simulators. The latter are not meant to fully encapsulate all the probable mechanisms and reactions that may occur as tracers are injected into the reservoir and flow across the rock material. Numerical methods are also examined in the case of reservoirs that oil exhibits a non-residual saturation value. Furthermore, the use of partitioning tracers is investigated in heterogeneous reservoirs as well as in naturally fractured reservoirs as a qualitative means that may lead to useful information about flow patterns that cannot be easily deduced solely from production data themselves. Περίληψη: Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εξετάζεται η χρήση ιχνηθετών σε ταμιευτήρες πετρελαίου, υπό το πρίσμα προγραμμάτων προσομοίωσης της ροής εντός του ταμιευτήρα. Ιχνηθέτες έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί ευρέως στην πετρελαϊκή βιομηχανία εδώ και πολλές δεκαετίες, ως μέσα ταυτοποίησης και χαρακτηρισμού της ροής των υδρογονανθράκων. Υδατόφιλοι ιχνηθέτες καθώς και ιχνηθέτες που διαχωρίζονται μεταξύ πετρελαϊκής και υδάτινης φάσης εγχέονται στον ταμιευτήρα. Διαφορές στο χρόνο κατά τον οποίο οι δυο τελευταίοι εξέρχονται της παραγωγικής γεώτρησης, δίνουν κρίσιμες πληροφορίες όσον αφορά συγκεκριμένα φαινόμενα ή μοτίβα ροής, καθώς και πληροφορίες για τους όγκους των ρευστών, τα οποία απαντούν στον ταμιευτήρα. Προκειμένου η εκτίμηση όσον αφορά τους όγκους των ρευστών να είναι επαρκής, απαιτείται η πετρελαϊκή φάση να βρίσκεται σε κατάσταση υπολειμματικού κορεσμού. Για το λόγο αυτό, η χρήση ιχνηθετών πραγματοποιείται ως επί το πλείστων προ της εκπόνησης Υποβοηθούμενης Ανάκτησης Πετρελαίου, η οποία αποτελεί τριτογενή μέθοδο παραγωγής. Αρχικά, είναι σημαντικό να καθοριστεί αν ροή των ιχνηθετών ως χημικά συστατικά απεικονίζεται επαρκώς μέσω της χρήσης προσομοιωτών ροής. Οι τελευταίοι βασίζονται στην εκπόνηση αριθμητικών προσεγγίσεων και εξ ορισμού δεν απαιτείται από αυτούς να αποδώσουν πλήρως τις αντιδράσεις, χημικές ή μη, οι οποίες λαμβάνουν χώρα εντός του ταμιευτήρα. Η χρήση των ιχνηθετών εξετάστηκε παράλληλα και σε ταμιευτήρες όπου ο κορεσμός στην πετρελαϊκή φάση ήταν μεγαλύτερος της υπολειμματικής τιμής. Επιπλέον, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν σε περιπτώσεις ετερογενών ταμιευτήρων, όσον αφορά τη διαπερατότητα καθώς και σε ταμιευτήρες οι οποίοι έχουν υποστεί φυσική ρωγμάτωση, κυρίως στην ποιοτική ανάλυση αυτών παρά την ποσοτική.

Περίληψη: Είναι γνωστό ότι οι περισσότεροι χειριστές λογισμικού προσομοίωσης ταμιευτήρων (reservoir simulation) προτιμούν τις προσεγγίσεις τύπου μαύρου πετρελαίου (Black Oil model ή Modified Black Oil model), όταν αυτές είναι εφαρμόσιμες, έναντι της προσέγγισης πλήρους σύστασης (Fully Compositional) καθόσον η δεύτερη απαιτεί σημαντικά περισσότερο χρόνο CPU κατά την εκτέλεση της προσομοίωσης. Για τη δημιουργία των Black Oil Tables (BOT) απαιτείται η εκπόνηση μελέτης PVΤ με διαδικασίες όπως της μελέτης σταθερής μάζας (Constant Composition Expansion, CCE) και διαφορικής εξάτμισης (Differential Vaporization, DV). Σήμερα στη βιομηχανία πετρελαίου χρησιμοποιούνται ως επί το πλείστoν μέθοδοι BOT βασισμένες στην διαδικασία της διαφορικής εξάτμισης και τροποποιημένες βάσει των αποτελεσμάτων τεστ διαχωριστήρα (separator test), ή ενίοτε, απευθείας στα αποτελέσματα της διαφορικής εξάτμισης. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εξετάζονται δύο ρευστά διαφορετικής πτητικότητας («μαύρου» και πτητικού πετρελαίου) για τα οποία αναπτύσσονται μοντέλα Fully Compositional αλλά και Black Oil Tables με τις πλέον δημοφιλείς μεθόδους που απαντώνται στην βιβλιογραφία και χρησιμοποιούνται στη βιομηχανία. Συγκεκριμένα, αφού αναπτύχθηκε το Fully Compositional μοντέλο για κάθε ρευστό, προσομοιώθηκαν οι διαδικασίες DV, σύνθετης διαφορικής εξάτμισης (Differential Vaporization Composite, DVC) και σύνθετης μελέτης σταθερής μάζας (Constant Composition Expansion Composite, CCEC) με χρήση του λογισμικού PVTP της εταιρείας Petroleum Experts. Στην συνέχεια αναπτύχθηκαν για κάθε ρευστό 5 Black Oil Tables χρησιμοποιώντας τις κάτωθι μεθόδους: • απευθείας από DV • από τον συνδυασμό DV και separator test κατά Dake • από τον συνδυασμό DV και separator test κατά Al Mahroun • από την DVC • και από την CCEC Έπειτα, προσομοιώθηκε το ίδιο σενάριο εκμετάλλευσης ταμιευτήρα χρησιμοποιώντας τον προσομοιωτή ταμιευτήρων Reveal της εταιρείας Petroleum Experts τόσο με το Fully Compositional μοντέλο, όσο και με τα 5 διαφορετικά BOT, και συγκρίθηκαν τα δεδομένα παραγωγής που προέκυψαν. Παρατηρήθηκε πως η ανάγκη μετάβασης από τις απλές προσεγγίσεις (Dake & Al Mahroun) στις πιο σύνθετες (DVC & CCEC) αυξάνει με την πτητικότητα του πετρελαίου, καθώς στο ρευστό χαμηλής πτητικότητας όλες οι μέθοδοι πλην της DV απέδωσαν παραπλήσια αποτελέσματα. Οι μέθοδοι διαφοροποιούνται σημαντικά στο ρευστό υψηλής πτητικότητας, με την καλύτερη προσέγγιση, ως προς τα αποτελέσματα της μεθόδου πλήρους σύστασης, να παρέχεται από την μέθοδο BOT βάσει της CCEC και να ακολουθεί η μέθοδος BOT βάσει DVC, ενώ η μέθοδος BOT βάσει της DV υστερεί σημαντικά σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν πως η διαδικασία που προσεγγίζει καλύτερα τις συστάσεις των φάσεων που ισορροπούν κατά την διάρκεια παραγωγής σε έναν ταμιευτήρα είναι η μέθοδος που βασίζεται στα δεδομένα της μελέτης σταθερής μάζας και όχι η της διαφορικής εξάτμισης όπως προτείνεται συχνά στην βιβλιογραφία. Επίσης φάνηκε η αδυναμία όλων των μεθόδων Black Oil στο να προσεγγίσουν επαρκώς την δημιουργία μετώπου αερίου που προέβλεψε το fully compositional μοντέλο, επιβεβαιώνοντας τα στοιχεία της βιβλιογραφίας.
