Background: Co-production of research into public health services has yet to demonstrate tangible benefits. Few studies have reported the impact of co-production on research outcomes. The previous studies of organ donation have identified challenges in engaging with public organizations responsible, gaining ethical approval for sensitive studies with the recently bereaved and difficulty in recruiting bereaved family members who were approached about organ donation., Objective: To address these challenges, we designed the first large co-productive observational study to evaluate implementation of a new system of organ donation in Wales. This paper outlines the co-productive strategies that were designed to overcome known methodological challenges and reports what impact they had on resolving these challenges., Design: Two-year co-produced study with multiple stakeholders with the specific intention of maximizing engagement with the National Health Service arm in Wales responsible for organ donation, and recruitment of bereaved family members whose perspectives are essential but commonly absent from studies., Setting and Participants: NHS Blood and Transplant, Welsh Government and multiple patient and public representatives who served as co-productive partners with the research team., Results: Co-productive strategies enabled a smooth passage through four different ethics processes within the 10-week time frame, family member recruitment targets to be surpassed, sharing of routinely collected data on 100% of potential organ donor cases and development of further research capacity and capability in a critically under researched area., Discussion and Conclusion: Although expensive and time consuming, co-production was effective and added value to research processes and study outcomes., (© 2019 The Authors Health Expectations published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: The need to build research capacity within allied health professions has previously been acknowledged as a workforce development strategy required to enhance the effectiveness of the health system. This study aimed to assess consensus among Australian allied health academics about the research- and evaluation-specific competencies required of graduates in the Australian workforce context., Methods: A two-round Delphi study was conducted among a purposively sampled panel of 57 allied health educators from physiotherapy, speech pathology, and dietetics from universities across Australia. Panelists were asked to rate a list of extant research and evaluation competency elements as essential, useful, or not essential for allied health graduates., Results: Over 30 of the final 69 competency elements were considered essential across the three allied health disciplines. There was limited evidence of significant differences in the proportion of panelists across disciplines rating competency elements as essential, suggesting good interdisciplinary agreement., Conclusions: The process of assessing consensus on competency expectations against extant health professional competencies suggests opportunities for more efficient interprofessional research and evaluation competency development in the allied health professions. Further, this challenges the logic of keeping allied health students in disciplinary silos in areas where competencies are shared across education programs.

There has been increasing emphasis in medical research on the design and analysis of quality of life scales. Many quality of life scales are ordinal and statistical methods such as ordinal regression models have been reviewed on a number of occasions. However, when such models are applied, the way the data have been generated is often overlooked. In this paper we illustrate the use of ordinal regression models, in particular the proportional odds model, the partial proportional odds model and the stereotype model in the MRC Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (MRC CFAS). The partial proportional odds and the stereotype models are often under-utilized, perhaps due to the lack of available software. However, in this paper, analysis based on these models has been carried out using the popular statistical software package SAS and macros devised in SAS. Furthermore, bootstrapping techniques have been applied to obtain valid estimates of the standard errors of the parameters in the stereotype model. Strikingly different results were obtained using the different ordinal regression models. We conclude that the way the data have been generated is particularly important for the analysis of quality of life assessments. Different methods of generating scores yield data with different properties. It is now possible to fit a variety of ordinal regression models and so select the appropriate one that correctly models the data.

Introduction: pH impedance testing is the most sensitive diagnostic test for detecting gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The literature remains inconclusive on which preoperative pH impedance testing parameters are associated with an improvement in heartburn symptoms after anti-reflux surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate which parameters on preoperative pH impedance testing were associated with improved GERD health-related quality of life (GERD-HRQL) following surgery.Methods: Data from a single-institution foregut database were used to identify patients with reflux symptoms who underwent anti-reflux surgery between 2014 and 2020. Acid and impedance parameters were extracted from preoperative pH impedance studies. GERD-HRQL was assessed pre- and postoperatively with a questionnaire that evaluated heartburn, dysphagia, and the impact of acid-blocking medications on daily life. Patient characteristics, fundoplication type, and four pH impedance parameters were included in a multivariable linear regression model with improvement in GERD-HRQL as the outcome.Results: We included 108 patients (59 Nissen and 49 Toupet fundoplications), with a median follow-up time of 1 year. GERD-HRQL scores improved from 22.4 (SD ± 10.1) preoperatively to 4.2 (± 6.2) postoperatively. In multivariable analysis, a normal preoperative acid exposure time (p = 0.01) and Toupet fundoplication (vs. Nissen; p = 0.03) were independently associated with greater improvement in GERD-HRQL.Conclusions: Of the four pH impedance parameters that were investigated, a normal preoperative acid exposure time was associated with greater improvement in quality of life after anti-reflux surgery. Background: Many children and their families are affected by premature birth. Yet, little is known about their healthcare access and adverse family impact during early childhood. This study aimed to (1) examine differences in healthcare access and adverse family impact among young children by prematurity status and (2) determine associations of healthcare access with adverse family impact among young children born prematurely.Methods: This was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional 2016 and 2017 National Survey of Children's Health data. The sample included 19,482 U.S. children ages 0-5 years including 242 very low birthweight (VLBW) and 2205 low birthweight and/or preterm (LBW/PTB) children. Prematurity status was defined by VLBW (i.e., < 1500 g at birth) and LBW/PTB (i.e., 1500-2499 g at birth and/or born at < 37 weeks with or without LBW). Healthcare access measures were adequate health insurance, access to medical home, and developmental screening receipt. Adverse family impact measures were ≥ $1000 in annual out-of-pocket medical costs, having a parent cut-back or stop work, parental aggravation, maternal health not excellent, and paternal health not excellent. The relative risk of each healthcare access and adverse family impact measure was computed by prematurity status. Propensity weighted models were fit to estimate the average treatment effect of each healthcare access measure on each adverse family impact measure among children born prematurely (i.e., VLBW or LBW/PTB).Results: Bivariate analysis results showed that VLBW and/or LBW/PTB children generally fared worse than other children in terms of medical home, having a parent cut-back or stop working, parental aggravation, and paternal health. Multivariable analysis results only showed, however, that VLBW children had a significantly higher risk than other children of having a parent cut-back or stop work. Adequate health insurance and medical home were each associated with reduced adjusted relative risk of ≥$1000 in annual out-of-pocket costs, having a parent cut-back or stop work, and parental aggravation among children born prematurely.Conclusions: This study's findings demonstrate better healthcare access is associated with reduced adverse family impact among U.S. children ages 0-5 years born prematurely. Background: Heller myotomy (HM) has historically been considered the gold standard treatment for achalasia. Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a less-invasive procedure and offers a quicker recovery. Although some studies have compared short-term outcomes of HM and POEM, predictors of long-term dysphagia resolution remain unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate patient-reported outcomes for achalasia patients who underwent either POEM or HM over a 9-year period.Methods: Data from our single academic institutional foregut database were used to identify achalasia patients who underwent HM or POEM from 2009 to 2018. Electronic health record data were reviewed to obtain patient characteristics and operative data. Achalasia severity stages were established for each patient using esophagram findings from an attending radiologist blinded to the procedure type. Postoperative outcomes were assessed via telephone for patients with at least 9 months of follow-up using Eckardt dysphagia scores. Patient age, sex, type of operation, and duration of follow-up were included in a multivariable linear regression model with Eckardt score as the outcome.Results: Our cohort included 141 patients (97 HM and 44 POEM). Eighty-two patients completed a phone survey at the 9 months or greater time interval (response rate = 58%). Mean Eckardt scores were 2.98 and 2.53 at a median follow-up of 3 years and 1 year for HM and POEM patients, respectively (an Eckardt score ≤ 3 is considered a successful myotomy). Lower stages of achalasia on esophagram (e.g., Stage 0 vs. Stage 4) were associated with greater dysphagia improvement. On multivariable analysis, operative approach was not associated with a statistically significant difference in dysphagia outcomes.Conclusions: POEM and HM were associated with similar rates of dysphagia resolution for achalasia patients at a median of 2 years of follow-up. Epidemiological, preclinical, and clinical studies have suggested a role for microdose lithium in reducing Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk by modulating key mechanisms associated with AD pathology. The novel microdose lithium formulation, NP03, has disease-modifying effects in the McGill-R-Thy1-APP transgenic rat model of AD-like amyloidosis at pre-plaque stages, before frank amyloid-β (Aβ) plaque deposition, during which Aβ is primarily intraneuronal. Here, we are interested in determining whether the positive effects of microdose lithium extend into early Aβ post-plaque stages. We administered NP03 (40μg Li/kg; 1 ml/kg body weight) to McGill-R-Thy1-APP transgenic rats for 12 weeks spanning the transition phase from plaque-free to plaque-bearing. The effect of NP03 on remote working memory was assessed using the novel object recognition task. Levels of human Aβ38, Aβ40, and Aβ42 as well as levels of pro-inflammatory mediators were measured in brain-extracts and plasma using electrochemiluminescent assays. Mature Aβ plaques were visualized with a thioflavin-S staining. Vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) bouton density and levels of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) were probed using quantitative immunohistochemistry. During the early Aβ post-plaque stage, we find that NP03 rescues functional deficits in object recognition, reduces loss of cholinergic boutons in the hippocampus, reduces levels of soluble and insoluble cortical Aβ42 and reduces hippocampal Aβ plaque number. In addition, NP03 reduces markers of neuroinflammation and cellular oxidative stress. Together these results indicate that microdose lithium NP03 is effective at later stages of amyloid pathology, after appearance of Aβ plaques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Military personnel and civilian athletes are both at risk for mild traumatic brain injury. However, these groups are unique in their training and typical daily activities. A fundamental gap in the evaluation of military personnel following mild traumatic brain injury is the lack of military-specific normative reference data. This project aimed to determine if a separate normative sample should be used for military personnel on their performance of the Cleveland Clinic Concussion application and a recently developed dual-task module.Methods: Data were collected from healthy military personnel (n = 305) and civilians (n = 281) 18 to 30 years of age. Participants completed the following assessments: simple and choice reaction time, Trail Making tests A&B, processing speed test, single-task postural stability, single-task cognitive assessment, and dual-task assessment.Results: Civilian participants outperformed military service members on all cognitive tasks under single- and dual-task conditions (P ≤ 0.04). The military group outperformed civilians on all postural stability tasks under single- and dual-task conditions (P ≤ 0.01).Conclusion: Differences in cognitive performance and postural stability measures may be influenced by demographic differences between military and civilian cohorts. Thus, military-specific normative datasets must be established to optimize clinical interpretation of Cleveland Clinic Concussion assessments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dietetics practice educators are instrumental in the development of future dietitians. The present study aimed to explore dietetics practice educators' experiences of, and challenges faced in, dietetics workforce preparation. Methods: This study was guided by interpretive description methodology. Purposive and maximum variation sampling were used to recruit 18 dietetics practice educators from a variety of practice areas and locations across Australia. In‐depth, semi‐structured interviews were digitally recorded then transcribed verbatim and inductive coding of data was managed with nvivo (QSR International Pty Ltd, Doncaster, VIC, Australia). Multiple researchers analysed the data to develop preliminary themes using template analysis before final themes were identified. Results: Three main themes were developed: nurturing others; seeing the flaws; and soldiering on. Practice educators take great satisfaction in witnessing students develop and are focused on cultivating future practitioners with authentic learning activities. However, they are impacted by perceived shortcomings of the systems in which they operate and consider that broadening the scope of dietetics placements to better align with contemporary practice could benefit graduates and the profession. Despite these challenges, practice educators are pragmatic in getting on with their roles and recognise the advantages gained from student placements. Conclusions: Despite facing numerous challenges, practice educators derive benefits from their role in workforce preparation. Evidence is required on how students can demonstrate competence in contemporary areas of practice and on how to enable the scope of student placements to be broadened. Such strategies could support practice educators to overcome challenges and help ensure the dietetics profession of tomorrow is relevant and responsive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gait speed is typically reduced when individuals simultaneously perform other tasks. However, the impact of dual tasking on kinetic and kinematic gait parameters is unclear because these vary with gait speed. The objective of this study was to identify whether dual tasking impacts gait in healthy adults when speed is constant. Twenty-two healthy adults dialed a cell phone during treadmill walking at a self-selected speed while kinetic, kinematic, and spatial parameters were recorded. Results indicated that dual tasking did not impact phone dialing speed, but increased stride width, peak knee flexion during stance, and peak plantarflexion, and decreased knee and ankle range of motion. Dual tasking appears to influence kinematic gait variables in a manner consistent with promotion of stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Objectives: To determine whether the adenine (A)-guanine (G) substitution polymorphism at position - 308 on the tumor necrosis factor-alpha gene confers susceptibility to COPD or to the development of a more severe form of disease.Design: A cross-sectional study was undertaken to compare the frequency of the A allele in a group of 106 patients with COPD with that in a control population (n = 99). Patients were followed up prospectively for a period of 2 years.Participants and Setting: Participants included 106 COPD patients recruited from a respiratory outpatient clinic and 99 control subjects recruited from patients admitted for cardiac catheterization.Measurements and Results: DNA was extracted from venous blood, and each subject was genotyped for the polymorphism by polymerase chain reaction amplification and restriction digestion using Nco1. There was no increased frequency of the A allele in patients compared to control subjects. AA homozygous patients had less reversible airflow obstruction (p<0.05) and a significantly greater mortality (both all-cause and respiratory deaths) on follow-up (p<0.001), despite a shorter cigarette smoking history.Conclusions: This study suggests that homozygosity for this A allele predisposes to more severe airflow obstruction and a worse prognosis in COPD. Antigen specific and cross reacting antibodies to native and denatured types II and XI collagen were detected in the sera of rats immunised with either of these antigens. The antibodies from rats immunised with type XI collagen initially showed the strongest binding to the alpha 2(XI) chain of type XI collagen but later binding to the alpha 3(XI) chain was seen. Sera from patients with rheumatoid arthritis had antibodies that bound to both type II and XI collagens. Immunoblotting studies showed that most patients had antibodies which bound to the alpha 1(II) chain of type II collagen and to the alpha 3(XI) chain of type XI collagen. Some patients also had antibodies which bound to the alpha 1(XI) and to the alpha 2(XI) chains of type XI collagen. Thus antibodies to unique as well as to common epitopes on each of the two types of collagen molecule occur in some patients with rheumatoid arthritis. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Native 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen (500 micrograms per rat) was both immunogenic and arthritogenic in Alderley Park rats (46% developed arthritis) but only immunogenic in Sprague-Dawley rats. Conversely, native type II collagen (500 micrograms per rat) was immunogenic and arthritogenic in both strains (64% arthritic in Alderley Park strain, 57% arthritic in Sprague-Dawley strain). The inflammatory polyarthritis induced by 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen was similar to that produced by native type II collagen in clinical appearance, time of onset, and histology. Antibodies raised to native bovine type II collagen cross-reacted with native 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen and vice versa. Thus the minor collagen component of cartilage, the 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen, as well as the major collagen component, type II collagen, are immunogenic and arthritogenic in the rat, with strain differences. We have studied the kinetic properties of rabbit red cell (RRBC) Na+/Na+ and Na+/H+ exchanges (EXC) in order to define whether or not both transport functions are conducted by the same molecule. The strategy has been to determine the interactions of Na+ and H+ at the internal (i) and external (o) sites for both exchanges modes. RRBC containing varying Nai and Hi were prepared by nystatin and DIDS treatment of acid-loaded cells. Na+/Na+ EXC was measured as Nao-stimulated Na+ efflux and Na+/H+ EXC as Nao-stimulated H+ efflux and delta pHo-stimulated Na+ influx into acid-loaded cells. The activation of Na+/Na+ EXC by Nao at pHi 7.4 did not follow simple hyperbolic kinetics. Testing of different kinetic models to obtain the best fit for the experimental data indicated the presence of high (Km 2.2 mM) and low affinity (Km 108 mM) sites for a single- or two-carrier system. The activation of Na+/H+ EXC by Nao (pHi 6.6, Nai less than 1 mM) also showed high (Km 11 mM) and low (Km 248 mM) affinity sites. External H+ competitively inhibited Na+/Na+ EXC at the low affinity Nao site (KH 52 nM) while internally H+ were competitive inhibitors (pK 6.7) at low Nai and allosteric activators (pK 7.0) at high Nai. Na+/H+ EXC was also inhibited by acid pHo and allosterically activated by Hi (pK 6.4). We also established the presence of a Nai regulatory site which activates Na+/H+ and Na+/Na+ EXC modifying the affinity for Nao of both pathways. At low Nai, Na+/Na+ EXC was inhibited by acid pHi and Na+/H+ stimulated but at high Nai, Na+/Na+ EXC was stimulated and Na+/H+ inhibited being the sum of both pathways kept constant. Both exchange modes were activated by two classes of Nao sites, cis-inhibited by external Ho, allosterically modified by the binding of H+ to a Hi regulatory site and regulated by Nai. These findings are consistent with Na+/Na+ EXC being a mode of operation of the Na+/H+ exchanger. Na+/H+ EXC was partially inhibited (80-100%) by dimethyl-amiloride (DMA) but basal or pHi-stimulated Na+/Na+ EXC (pHi 6.5, Nai 80 mM) was completely insensitive indicating that Na+/Na+ EXC is an amiloride-insensitive component of Na+/H+ EXC. However, Na+ and H+ efflux into Na-free media were stimulated by cell acidification and also partially (10 to 40%) inhibited by DMA; this also indicates that the Na+/H+ EXC might operate in reverse or uncoupled modes in the absence of Na+/Na+ EXC.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red cell volume regulation is important in sickle cell anemia because the rate and extent of HbS polymerization are strongly dependent on initial hemoglobin concentration. We have demonstrated that volume-sensitive K:Cl cotransport is highly active in SS whole blood and is capable of increasing MCHC. We now report that Na+/H+ exchange (Na/H EXC), which is capable of decreasing the MCHC of erythrocytes with pHi less than 7.2, is also very active in the blood of patients homozygous for HbS. The activity of Na/H EXC (maximum rate) was determined by measuring net Na+ influx (mmol/liter cell.hr = FU) driven by an outward H+ gradient in oxygenated, acid-loaded (pHi6.0), DIDS-treated SS cells. The Na/H EXC activity was 33 +/- 3 FU (mean +/- SE) (n = 19) in AA whites, 37 +/- 8 FU (n = 8) in AA blacks, and 85 +/- 15 FU (n = 14) in SS patients (P less than 0.005). Separation of SS cells into four density-defined fractions by density gradient revealed mean values of Na/H EXC four to five times higher in reticulocytes (SS1), discocytes (SS2) and dense discocytes (SS3), than in the fraction containing irreversibly sickled cells and dense discocytes (SS4). In contrast to K:Cl cotransport, which dramatically decreases after reticulocyte maturation, Na/H EXC persists well after reticulocyte maturation. In density-defined, normal AA red cells, Na/H EXC decreased monotonically as cell density increased. Using four brief assessment scales, profiles of mental health and psychological well-being were obtained from 507 old (aged 65-74 years) and 535 very old (aged 75+) individuals randomly sampled from the community. Assessments of dementia and depression were subsequently validated against diagnostic ratings made by experienced psychogeriatricians. Levels of agreement between psychometric and clinical ratings of dementia (kappa = 0.83) and depression (kappa = 0.66) were satisfactory. The old and very old groups reported similar levels of anxiety and personal disturbance, and showed a similar prevalence of depression. However, those aged 75+ showed higher levels of dementia and significantly lower levels of social involvement and morale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cardinal feature of generalised nodal osteoarthritis is the loss of articular cartilage. To determine if autoimmunity to these cartilage collagens occurred, serum antibodies to native and denatured type II collagen were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 96 patients (90 women, six men, aged 47-91 years) with generalised nodal osteoarthritis. Generalised nodal osteoarthritis was diagnosed by typical clinical and radiological features. Serum samples from 42 blood donors were assayed as controls. No significant difference was found between the patients with generalised nodal osteoarthritis and the controls. Furthermore, the 20 patients who were HLA-A1, B8 positive had similar antibody levels to the group as a whole. One woman patient with generalised nodal osteoarthritis (HLA-A1, B8 negative) had markedly increased antibody levels to native and denatured type II collagen in a pattern similar to that seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This patient did not develop super added rheumatoid arthritis during a three year follow up period. Autoimmunity to type II collagen is therefore rare in generalised nodal osteoarthritis. A lack of collagen antibodies in a condition characterised by hyaline cartilage loss suggests that the presence of such antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis is more than a secondary event to joint damage. Background: While associations between secondhand smoke and a few birth defects (namely, oral clefts and neural tube defects) have been noted in the scientific literature, to our knowledge, there is no single or comprehensive source of population-based information on its associations with a range of birth defects among nonsmoking mothers.Objective: We utilized data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a large population-based multisite case-control study, to examine associations between maternal reports of periconceptional exposure to secondhand smoke in the household or workplace/school and major birth defects.Study Design: The multisite National Birth Defects Prevention Study is the largest case-control study of birth defects to date in the United States. We selected cases from birth defect groups having >100 total cases, as well as all nonmalformed controls (10,200), from delivery years 1997 through 2009; 44 birth defects were examined. After excluding cases and controls from multiple births and whose mothers reported active smoking or pregestational diabetes, we analyzed data on periconceptional secondhand smoke exposure-encompassing the period 1 month prior to conception through the first trimester. For the birth defect craniosynostosis, we additionally examined the effect of exposure in the second and third trimesters as well due to the potential sensitivity to teratogens for this defect throughout pregnancy. Covariates included in all final models of birth defects with ≥5 exposed mothers were study site, previous live births, time between estimated date of delivery and interview date, maternal age at estimated date of delivery, race/ethnicity, education, body mass index, nativity, household income divided by number of people supported by this income, periconceptional alcohol consumption, and folic acid supplementation. For each birth defect examined, we used logistic regression analyses to estimate both crude and adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for both isolated and total case groups for various sources of exposure (household only; workplace/school only; household and workplace/school; household or workplace/school).Results: The prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure only across all sources ranged from 12.9-27.8% for cases and 14.5-15.8% for controls. The adjusted odds ratios for any vs no secondhand smoke exposure in the household or workplace/school and isolated birth defects were significantly elevated for neural tube defects (anencephaly: adjusted odds ratio, 1.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.22-2.25; and spina bifida: adjusted odds ratio, 1.49; 95% confidence interval, 1.20-1.86); orofacial clefts (cleft lip without cleft palate: adjusted odds ratio, 1.41; 95% confidence interval, 1.10-1.81; cleft lip with or without cleft palate: adjusted odds ratio, 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.46; cleft palate alone: adjusted odds ratio, 1.31; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.63); bilateral renal agenesis (adjusted odds ratio, 1.99; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-3.75); amniotic band syndrome-limb body wall complex (adjusted odds ratio, 1.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.10-2.51); and atrial septal defects, secundum (adjusted odds ratio, 1.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-1.72). There were no significant inverse associations observed.Conclusion: Additional studies replicating the findings are needed to better understand the moderate positive associations observed between periconceptional secondhand smoke and several birth defects in this analysis. Abstract: Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are more prevalent amongst individuals with psychosis, supporting a neurodevelopmental model for psychotic disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that neurodevelopmental adversity contributes to the excess of psychosis found in some ethnic groups in the UK. Subjects with first onset psychosis and healthy neighbourhood controls were enrolled in the ÆSOP study in South East London and Nottingham between 1997 and 1999. MPA rates were estimated in four broad ethnic groupings (White, African Caribbean, Black African and Other). Patients (n =245) had a higher mean total MPA score than healthy controls (n =158). This held true across each of the four ethnic groupings. The results of this study suggest that neurodevelopmental factors play a role in the aetiology of psychosis across all ethnic groups.
