Peanut is a significant oilseed crop that is often affected by peanut southern blight, a disease that greatly reduces crop yield and quality. Therefore, accurate and timely monitoring of this disease is crucial to ensure crop safety and minimize the need for pesticides. Spectral features combined with texture features have been widely applied in plant disease monitoring. However, previous studies have mostly used original texture features, and its combination form has been rarely considered. This study presents a novel approach for monitoring peanut southern blight, integrating multiple spectral indices and textural indices (TIs). Firstly, a total of 20 vegetation indices (VIs) were extracted from the unmanned aerial vehicle multispectral images, while three TIs were constructed based on original textural features. Subsequently, Otsu-CIgreen algorithm was used to find the optimal threshold to eliminate the complex background of the image. Lastly, monitoring models for peanut southern blight were constructed using three machine learning models based on the screened VIs, VIs combined with TIs. Among these models, the K-nearest neighbor model using VIs combined with TIs demonstrates the best performance, with accuracy and F1 score on the test set reaching 91.89% and 91.39% respectively. The results indicate that the monitoring models utilizing VIs and TIs were more effective compared to models using only VIs. A timely and comprehensive understanding of winter wheat maturity is crucial for deploying large-scale harvesters within a region, ensuring timely winter wheat harvesting, and maintaining grain quality. Winter wheat maturity prediction is limited by two key issues: accurate extraction of wheat planting areas and effective maturity prediction methods. The primary aim of this study is to propose a method for predicting winter wheat maturity. The method comprises three parts: (i) winter wheat planting area extraction via phenological characteristics across multiple growth stages; (ii) extraction of winter wheat maturity features via vegetation indices (VIs, such as NDVI, NDRE, NDII1, and NDII2) and box plot analysis; and (iii) winter wheat maturity data prediction via the selected VIs. The key findings of this work are as follows: (i) Combining multispectral remote sensing data from the winter wheat jointing-filling and maturity-harvest stages can provide high-precision extraction of winter wheat planting areas (OA = 95.67%, PA = 91.67%, UA = 99.64%, and Kappa = 0.9133). (ii) The proposed method can offer the highest accuracy in predicting maturity at the winter wheat flowering stage (R2 = 0.802, RMSE = 1.56 days), aiding in a timely and comprehensive understanding of winter wheat maturity and in deploying large-scale harvesters within the region. (iii) The study's validation was only conducted for winter wheat maturity prediction in the North China Plain wheat production area, and the accuracy of harvesting progress information extraction for other regions' wheat still requires further testing. Southern blight significantly impacts peanut yield, and its severity is exacerbated by high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. The mycelium attached to the plant's interior quickly proliferates, contributing to the challenges of early detection and data acquisition. In recent years, the integration of machine learning and remote sensing data has become a common approach for disease monitoring. However, the poor quality and imbalance of data samples can significantly impact the performance of machine learning algorithms. This study employed the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) algorithm to generate samples with varying severity levels. Additionally, it utilized Fractional-Order Differentiation (FOD) to enhance spectral information. The validation and testing of the 1D-CNN, SVM, and KNN models were conducted using experimental data from two different locations. In conclusion, our results indicate that the SMOTE-FOD-1D-CNN model enhances the ability to monitor the severity of peanut white mold disease (validation OA = 88.81%, Kappa = 0.85; testing OA = 82.76%, Kappa = 0.75). Timely and accurate monitoring of fractional vegetation cover (FVC), leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), and maturity of breeding material are essential for breeding companies. This study aimed to estimate LCC and FVC on the basis of remote sensing and to monitor maturity on the basis of LCC and FVC distribution. We collected UAV-RGB images at key growth stages of soybean, namely, the podding (P1), early bulge (P2), peak bulge (P3), and maturity (P4) stages. Firstly, based on the above multi-period data, four regression techniques, namely, partial least squares regression (PLSR), multiple stepwise regression (MSR), random forest regression (RF), and Gaussian process regression (GPR), were used to estimate the LCC and FVC, respectively, and plot the images in combination with vegetation index (VI). Secondly, the LCC images of P3 (non-maturity) were used to detect LCC and FVC anomalies in soybean materials. The method was used to obtain the threshold values for soybean maturity monitoring. Additionally, the mature and immature regions of soybean were monitored at P4 (mature stage) by using the thresholds of P3-LCC. The LCC and FVC anomaly detection method for soybean material presents the image pixels as a histogram and gradually removes the anomalous values from the tails until the distribution approaches a normal distribution. Finally, the P4 mature region (obtained from the previous step) is extracted, and soybean harvest monitoring is carried out in this region using the LCC and FVC anomaly detection method for soybean material based on the P4-FVC image. Among the four regression models, GPR performed best at estimating LCC (R2: 0.84, RMSE: 3.99) and FVC (R2: 0.96, RMSE: 0.08). This process provides a reference for the FVC and LCC estimation of soybean at multiple growth stages; the P3-LCC images in combination with the LCC and FVC anomaly detection methods for soybean material were able to effectively monitor soybean maturation regions (overall accuracy of 0.988, mature accuracy of 0.951, immature accuracy of 0.987). In addition, the LCC thresholds obtained by P3 were also applied to P4 for soybean maturity monitoring (overall accuracy of 0.984, mature accuracy of 0.995, immature accuracy of 0.955); the LCC and FVC anomaly detection method for soybean material enabled accurate monitoring of soybean harvesting areas (overall accuracy of 0.981, mature accuracy of 0.987, harvested accuracy of 0.972). Soybean breeders must develop early-maturing, standard, and late-maturing varieties for planting at different latitudes to ensure that soybean plants fully utilize solar radiation. Therefore, timely monitoring of soybean breeding line maturity is crucial for soybean harvesting management and yield measurement. Currently, the widely used deep learning models focus more on extracting deep image features, whereas shallow image feature information is ignored. In this study, we designed a new convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, called DS-SoybeanNet, to improve the performance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based soybean maturity information monitoring. DS-SoybeanNet can extract and utilize both shallow and deep image features. We used a high-definition digital camera on board a UAV to collect high-definition soybean canopy digital images. A total of 2662 soybean canopy digital images were obtained from two soybean breeding fields (fields F1 and F2). We compared the soybean maturity classification accuracies of (i) conventional machine learning methods (support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF)), (ii) current deep learning methods (InceptionResNetV2, MobileNetV2, and ResNet50), and (iii) our proposed DS-SoybeanNet method. Our results show the following: (1) The conventional machine learning methods (SVM and RF) had faster calculation times than the deep learning methods (InceptionResNetV2, MobileNetV2, and ResNet50) and our proposed DS-SoybeanNet method. For example, the computation speed of RF was 0.03 s per 1000 images. However, the conventional machine learning methods had lower overall accuracies (field F2: 63.37–65.38%) than the proposed DS-SoybeanNet (Field F2: 86.26%). (2) The performances of the current deep learning and conventional machine learning methods notably decreased when tested on a new dataset. For example, the overall accuracies of MobileNetV2 for fields F1 and F2 were 97.52% and 52.75%, respectively. (3) The proposed DS-SoybeanNet model can provide high-performance soybean maturity classification results. Accurate estimation of crop leaf and canopy biochemical traits, such as leaf dry matter content (Cm), leaf equivalent water thickness (Cw), leaf area index (LAI), dry leaf biomass (DLB), leaf total water content (LW), and fresh leaf biomass (FLB), is essential for monitoring crop growth accurately. The vegetation spectral feature technique combined with statistical regression methods is widely employed for remote sensing crop biochemical traits mapping. However, the crop canopy spectral reflectance is influenced by various crop biochemical traits and uncertainties in geometric changes of light and soil background effects. Consequently, the remote-sensing estimation of crop biochemical traits is limited. A potential solution involves training a deep learning model to understand the physical relationship between crop biochemical traits and canopy spectral reflectance based on a physical radiative transfer model (RTM). The primary focus of this study is to propose a winter-wheat leaf and canopy biochemical traits analysis and mapping method based on hyperspectral remote sensing, utilizing a deep learning network for leaf area index and leaf biochemical traits deep learning network (LabTNet). This study consists of four main tasks: (1) Field-based measurements of winter-wheat spectra and biochemical traits were conducted in two growing seasons. A PROSAIL RTM was also employed to generate a simulated dataset representing comprehensive and complex winter-wheat field conditions. (2) The LabTNet deep learning model was pre-trained using the simulated spectra dataset to acquire knowledge of the physical relationship between crop biochemical traits and canopy spectral reflectance derived from the RTM. Subsequently, the model was re-trained using the field-based spectra dataset from two growing seasons, employing a transfer learning technique. (3) An analysis was conducted to assess the performance of LabTNet against traditional statistical regression methods in estimating crop leaf and canopy biochemical traits. The study used the gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) technique to analyze the attention regions of input spectra (454:8:950 nm, 960:10:1300 nm, 1450:10:1750 nm, 2000:10:2350 nm) by different convolutional neural network layers in LabTNet, aiming to enhance the interpretability of deep learning models. (4) Winter-wheat leaf and canopy biochemical traits (Cw, Cm, LAI, DLB, LW, and FLB) were mapped using the LabTNet deep learning model. Our research has the following conclusions: (1) Combining the RTM and deep learning techniques yields higher winter-wheat biochemical trait estimates than traditional statistical regression methods. (2) Different LabTNet deep learning model layers focus on distinct areas of canopy reflectance, corresponding to the sensitive regions for various winter-wheat biochemical traits. (3) LabTNet demonstrates similar winter-wheat leaf and canopy biochemical traits estimation performance using visible and near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance data and full-spectral (FS) range hyperspectral reflectance as inputs (Cw: R 2 = 0.603–0.653, RMSE = 0.0015–0.0015 cm; Cm: R 2 = 0.511–0.560, RMSE = 0.0006–0.0007 g/m2; LAI: R 2 = 0.773–0.793, RMSE = 0.65–0.66 m2/m2; LW: R 2 = 0.842–0.847, RMSE = 67.93–70.73 g/m2; DLB: R 2 = 0.747–0.762, RMSE = 21.10–21.89 g/m2; FLB: R 2 = 0.831–0.840, RMSE = 86.26–90.30 g/m2). Accurate estimations of soil cover parameters (fractional coverage of crop residue [fcr], crop [fc], and bare soil [fbs]) in croplands can assist in decision-making for agricultural management organisations and are important for understanding the interrelations between global changes and terrestrial ecosystems. In recent decades, optical remote sensing has been widely used for mapping fc, fcr, and fbs. The crop residue and soil spectra decrease rapidly with increasing cropland moisture primarily because of water absorption in the near-infrared and shortwave infrared bands. This leads to a decrease in the denominator of current normalized crop residue spectral indices (shortwave infrared [SWIR] band 1 + band 2), thereby causing them to increase with increasing cropland moisture. This study revealed that the slopes of the soil and crop residue spectra between SWIR1 and SWIR2 were less affected by cropland moisture changes. Based on this feature, we propose a shortwave infrared angle (SWIRA) index and jointly use it with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to estimate and produce multi-temporal maps of fc, fcr, and fbs using broadband Sentinel-2 MSI images. The proposed SWIRA is the slope of the spectrum between SWIR1 and SWIR2. This study (i) uses laboratory-based spectral reflectance to evaluate the performance of the SWIRA and (ii) further evaluates the performance of the SWIRA–NDVI method using multi-temporal Sentinel-2 MSI images. Our results indicate that (i) cropland moisture has a considerably smaller effect on SWIRA than it does on current broadband normalized crop residue spectral indices, and (ii) maps of the estimated fc, fcr, and fbs values can be used to improve crop growth and decision-making, for example, by providing harvest maps and soil tillage intensity maps. Background: Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important parameter for evaluating crop-growth status. Optical remote-sensing techniques combined with the pixel dichotomy model (PDM) are widely used to estimate cropland FVC with medium to high spatial resolution on the ground. However, PDM-based FVC estimation is limited by effects stemming from the variation of crop canopy chlorophyll content (CCC). To overcome this difficulty, we propose herein a "fan-shaped method" (FSM) that uses a CCC spectral index (SI) and a vegetation SI to create a two-dimensional scatter map in which the three vertices represent high-CCC vegetation, low-CCC vegetation, and bare soil. The FVC at each pixel is determined based on the spatial location of the pixel in the two-dimensional scatter map, which mitigates the effects of CCC on the PDM. To evaluate the accuracy of FSM estimates of the FVC, we analyze the spectra obtained from (a) the PROSAIL model and (b) a spectrometer mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle platform. Specifically, we use both the proposed FSM and traditional remote-sensing FVC-estimation methods (both linear and nonlinear regression and PDM) to estimate soybean FVC. Results: Field soybean CCC measurements indicate that (a) the soybean CCC increases continuously from the flowering growth stage to the later-podding growth stage, and then decreases with increasing crop growth stages, (b) the coefficient of variation of soybean CCC is very large in later growth stages (31.58–35.77%) and over all growth stages (26.14%). FVC samples with low CCC are underestimated by the PDM. Linear and nonlinear regression underestimates (overestimates) FVC samples with low (high) CCC. The proposed FSM depends less on CCC and is thus a robust method that can be used for multi-stage FVC estimation of crops with strongly varying CCC. Conclusions: Estimates and maps of FVC based on the later growth stages and on multiple growth stages should consider the variation of crop CCC. FSM can mitigates the effect of CCC by conducting a PDM at each CCC level. The FSM is a robust method that can be used to estimate FVC based on multiple growth stages where crop CCC varies greatly. Timely and accurately estimates of crop biomass and grain yield estimation are crucial for agricultural management. Optical remote sensing techniques can provide crop parameters (e.g., biomass, fractional vegetation cover (FVC)) at regional and larger scales. However, such techniques saturate at high crop canopy cover and cannot detect biomass stored in reproductive organs. The AquaCrop model can be used to estimate FVC, biomass, and grain yield output based on crop growth environmental parameters (e.g., temperature, rainfall, irrigation). In this work, we developed a method for estimating and mapping crop biomass and grain yield using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images and AquaCrop. The combination of low-cost UAV remote sensing data and AquaCrop can be used to map wheat biomass and grain yield before harvest. This work investigated whether biomass and grain yield can be predicted using measurements of biomass and FVC in several winter-wheat fields at an early growing stage using ground-based and remote sensing-based methods. FVC, biomass, and grain yield were measured at several key growing stages (jointing (S1), heading (S2), flowering (S3), grain filling (S4)) and harvest (H) during 2014–2015. We specifically evaluated the performances of using field- and UAV-based FVC and biomass measurements from different growing-stage combinations (e.g., S1–S4, S1–S3, and S1–S2) to calibrate the AquaCrop model and estimate biomass and grain yield. The results indicate that winter-wheat biomass and grain yield can be estimated by calibrating AquaCrop using (i) biomass and (ii) biomass and FVC. The results also reveal that the biomass and grain yield estimated using FVC and AquaCrop have poor accuracy compared with the biomass and grain yield estimated using (i) only biomass and (ii) biomass and FVC. The results suggest that the combined use of UAV remote sensing and AquaCrop can be used to obtain maps of biomass and biomass yield. When estimating winter-wheat biomass and grain yield one month (13 May) before harvest (11 June), the predicted biomass and grain yield agreed with the measured values (biomass: n = 96, coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.61, mean absolute error (MAE) = 1.69 t ha–1, root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 2.10 t ha–1, normalized RMSE (nRMSE) = 18.5%; grain yield: n = 48, R2 = 0.63, MAE = 0.96 t ha–1, RMSE = 1.16 t ha–1, nRMSE = 21.9%). Background: Timely and accurate estimates of canopy chlorophyll (Chl) a and b content are crucial for crop growth monitoring and agricultural management. Crop canopy reflectance depends on many factors, which can be divided into the following categories: (i) leaf effects (e.g., leaf pigments), (ii) canopy effects (e.g., Leaf Area Index [LAI]), and (iii) soil background reflectance (e.g., soil reflectance). The estimation of leaf variables, such as Chl contents, from reflectance at the canopy scale is usually less accurate than that at the leaf scale. In this study, we propose a Visible and Near-infrared (NIR) Angle Index (VNAI) to estimate the Chl content of soybean canopy, and soybean canopy Chl maps are produced using visible and NIR unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images. The VNAI is insensitive to LAI and can be used for the multi-stage estimation of crop canopy Chl content. Results: Eleven previously used vegetation indices (VIs) (e.g., Pigment-specific Normalized Difference Index) were selected for performance comparison. The results showed that (i) most previously used Chl VIs were significantly correlated with LAI, and the proposed VNAI was more sensitive to Chl content than LAI; (ii) the VNAI-based estimates of Chl content were more accurate than those based on the other investigated VIs using (1) simulated, (2) real (field), and (3) real (UAV) datasets. Conclusions: Most previously used Chl VIs were significantly correlated with LAI whereas the proposed VNAI was more sensitive to Chl content than to LAI, indicating that the VNAI may be more strongly correlated with Chl content than these previously used VIs. Multi-stage estimations of the Chl content of cropland obtained using the VNAI and broadband remote sensing images may help to obtain Chl maps with high temporal and spatial resolution. Linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) is an important technique in field crop residue estimation. Traditionally, only one single or fixed standard crop residue and soil endmember spectrum is performed for each of the presented endmember classes or field. Because the variation in soil endmember spectrum signatures significantly changes with soil moisture (SM), spectral unmixing with fixed endmember spectra can lead to poor accuracy of the abundance of the spectral constituents of pure crop residue. Herein, this paper presents a dynamic soil endmember spectrum selection approach for improving the performance of soil and rice residue spectral unmixing analysis in rice residue cover (RRC) estimation. This new approach uses SM and soil spectral reflectance model to modify soil endmember spectra in each spectral unmixing analysis. Two validation datasets computed results have verified the feasibility and correctness of the dynamic soil endmember method. Results indicated that the distribution of SM in farmland was crucial for RRC estimation. Compared with traditional fixed min and fixed mean soil endmember spectrum methods, the results of the method developed herein showed this method significantly improved RRC estimation accuracy for an SM content lower than 20% (volumetric water content) over the traditional methods tested. Leaf coverage is an indicator of plant growth rate and predicted yield, and thus it is crucial to plant-breeding research. Robust image segmentation of leaf coverage from remote-sensing images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in varying environments can be directly used for large-scale coverage estimation, and is a key component of high-throughput field phenotyping. We thus propose an image-segmentation method based on machine learning to extract relatively accurate coverage information from the orthophoto generated after preprocessing. The image analysis pipeline, including dataset augmenting, removing background, classifier training and noise reduction, generates a set of binary masks to obtain leaf coverage from the image. We compare the proposed method with three conventional methods (Hue-Saturation-Value, edge-detection-based algorithm, random forest) and a frontier deep-learning method called DeepLabv3+. The proposed method improves indicators such as Qseg, Sr, Es and mIOU by 15% to 30%. The experimental results show that this approach is less limited by radiation conditions, and that the protocol can easily be implemented for extensive sampling at low cost. As a result, with the proposed method, we recommend using red-green-blue (RGB)-based technology in addition to conventional equipment for acquiring the leaf coverage of agricultural crops. Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is a distinct indicator of crop health status used to estimate nutritional stress, diseases, and pests. Thus, accurate LCC information can assist in the monitoring of crop growth. The combined use of hyperspectral and deep learning techniques (e.g., convolutional neural network [CNN] and transfer learning [TL]) can improve the performance of crop LCC estimation. We propose a hyperspectral-to-image transform (HIT) technique for converting canopy hyperspectral reflectance into 2D images. We designed a CNN architecture called LCCNet that fuses the deep and shallow features of CNNs to improve soybean LCC estimation. This study evaluated the combined use of hyperspectral remote sensing (RS), HIT, CNN, and TL techniques to estimate soybean LCC for multiple growth stages. The LCCNet was pre-trained based on a simulated dataset (n = 114,048) from the PROSAIL radiative transfer model (RTM) and used as prior knowledge for this work. The soybean canopy hyperspectral RS dataset (n = 910) was obtained using a FieldSpec 3 spectrometer. The knowledge gained while learning to estimate LCC from PROSAIL RTM was applied when estimating field soybean LCC (Dualex readings). TL was used to enhance the soybean estimation model, called the Soybean-LCCNet (RTM + HIT + CNN + TL) model. We tested the LCC (Dualex readings) estimation performance using (a) HIT + CNN, (b) LCCNet (RTM + HIT + CNN), (c) Soybean-LCCNet (RTM + HIT + CNN + TL), and (d) widely used LCC spectral features + partial least squares regression (PLSR). Four methods were ranked based on their LCC estimation performance: Soybean-LCCNet (R2 = 0.78, RMSE = 4.13 (Dualex readings)) > HIT + CNN (R2 = 0.75, RMSE = 4.41 (Dualex readings)) > PLSR-based method (R2 = 0.61, RMSE = 5.39 (Dualex readings)) > LCCNet (R2 = 0.53, RMSE = 7.11 (Dualex readings)). The main conclusions of this work are as follows: (1) HIT + CNN can provide a more robust LCC estimation performance than the widely used LCC SIs; (2) Fusing the deep and shallow features of CNNs can improve the performance of RS soybean LCC (Dualex readings) estimation; and (3) Soybean-LCCNet can reuse the CNN layer information of a pre-trained LCCNet based on a PROSAIL RTM dataset and improve the soybean LCC estimation performance. The accurate estimation of crop above-ground biomass (AGB) can assist in crop growth monitoring and grain yield prediction. Remote sensing has been widely used for AGB estimation at regional and local scales in recent years. However, optical remote sensing spectral indices (SIs) become saturated at medium-to-high crop covers. The combined use of remote sensing techniques and statistical regression models is not based on an understanding of how crop leaves and vertical organs contribute to the crop AGB. This causes difficulties in measuring the biomass stored in vertical organs (e.g., plant stem, wheat-spike, maize-tassel; abbreviated as AGB v) using optical remote sensing. This study aims to develop an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based vertically growing crop AGB (VGC-AGB) model. We defined C sm (g/m) to describe the crop stem and reproductive organs' average dry mass content. This was done to improve the estimation of AGB v. The crop leaf area index (LAI, m2/m2), leaf dry matter content (C m , g/m2), height (C h , m), and density (C d , m−2) were used in the VGC-AGB. The VGC-AGB calculated crop leaf AGB (AGB l) using LAI × C m (g/m2) and AGB v using C d × C h × C sm (g/m2). The proposed VGC-AGB (AGB = LAI × C m + C d × C h × C sm) was verified using field and UAV-based hyperspectral datasets of winter-wheat and summer-maize at three growth stages. Our results indicate that UAV-based VGC-AGB (R 2 = 0.92–0.93, RMSE = 68.82–75.15 g/m2) is superior to the statistical regression model that is based on remote sensing SIs and CSMs (R 2 = 0.77, RMSE = 134.94 g/m2). The results indicate that the UAV-based VGC-AGB supports the analysis of crop photosynthetic product transfers and high-performance UAV-based high-performance non-destructive AGB monitoring. Soil moisture content (SMC) has been widely focused and studied in various fields of research, including atmosphere-land water/energy exchange, drought, and vegetation-related topics. Many indices and models have been proposed to illustrate the reflectance features changing with SMC, and to estimate SMC from the reflectance of narrow bands and broadbands, using lab, field, airborne and satellite data. These methods/indices were mostly developed for all levels of SMCs, from saturated to air-dry; however, we found that a single relationship mapping saturated to air-dry can lead to a false impression of accurate estimation. The inconsistency of a regression relationship between spectral reflectance features and SMCs over the whole drying process results in a low estimation accuracy for relatively low SMCs. In this study, a segmentation method is proposed with the goal of a more accurate SMC estimate. The whole drying process of three soil samples, representing varied soil characteristics, is monitored, and the transition points are determined by evaporation rate change (as stage-1 drying with high SMC and stage-2 drying with low SMC). An index, the shortwave normalized index (SNI), is built for SMC estimation, and the SNI index trend during drying is supported by a radiative transfer-based model. As validated, the SNI index is capable of SMC estimates, and the segmentation method improves estimation accuracy astonishingly compared with current methods. • Whole drying process of soils can be segmented into two stages. • Segmentation can markedly improve soil moisture content estimate accuracy. • Reflective remote sensing has the potential to find the regression relationship. • Index is built using shortwave infrared wavelengths for moisture content estimate. • Regression result is supported by a radiative transfer-based model. Timely monitoring of potato yield status is crucial for guiding field management and ensuring the sustainability of food trade. In recent years, non-destructive remote sensing techniques have emerged as one of the most promising methods for crop yield monitoring. However, most existing potato yield estimation models have primarily been tested at specific growth stages within a single ecosystem, highlighting the urgent need for a model that can be applied across different ecological environments. In this study, we developed a semi-physical model based on hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to automatically correct yield estimation based on remotely sensed vegetation indices using environmentally relevant variables such as net solar radiation at the surface (ssr), air temperature at 2 m above the surface (t2m), and soil water content in the root zone (swvl). The accuracy and transferability of the model were further evaluated by comparing it with aboveground destructive sampling methods, conventional empirical models, and machine learning approaches. The results demonstrated that site-specific relationships exist between aboveground agronomic traits parameters like biomass and leaf area index (LAI) with respect to yield estimation. Conventional linear statistical and machine learning methods faced challenges in transferring their constructed yield estimation models across regions and years. However, the HLM approach exhibited excellent generalization ability across all trial samples. In the middle and later stages of potato growth, the standardized LAI determining index proved to be the most effective vegetation for predicting yield, while ssr, skt max , and shallow swvl were identified as key environmental variables affecting yield. By integrating these variables using HLM modeling techniques, we achieved optimal generalization performance (R2 = 0.57, RMSE = 7.65 t/ha, NRMSE = 25.02 % during tuber growth stage; R2 = 0.60, RMSE = 7.37 t/ha, NRMSE = 24.13 % during starch accumulation stage). This study underscores the importance of considering environmental factors when constructing a reliable model for estimating potato yield at different spatial and temporal scales using remote sensing technology. Above-ground biomass (AGB) is an important agronomic indicator that reflects crop growth and estimates yield. The AGB estimation using remote sensing becomes a non-destructive, rapid, and alternative method to post-harvest laboratory measurements. However, most of the AGB estimation models constructed based on remote sensing data are difficult to expand regionally, which limits the applicability of the models. This study combined ground-based hyperspectral and meteorological data by using a hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to construct an AGB estimation model that was generalized across different regions. Experimental data from both regions were acquired and validated, namely from Xiaotangshan Experimental Base, Beijing, 2019 (North China) and Keshan Farm, Qiqihar Branch, Heilongjiang General Bureau of Reclamation, 2022 (Northeast China). Compared to OLS, RFR and GRU, the HLM method was better for estimating potato AGB in different regions with R2 = 0.54, RMSE = 429.62 kg/hm2, NRMSE = 28.20 %. Above-ground biomass (AGB) and the leaf area index (LAI) are important indicators for the assessment of crop growth, and are therefore important for agricultural management. Although improvements have been made in the monitoring of crop growth parameters using ground- and satellite-based sensors, the application of these technologies is limited by imaging difficulties, complex data processing, and low spatial resolution. Therefore, this study evaluated the use of hyperspectral indices, red-edge parameters, and their combination to estimate and map the distributions of AGB and LAI for various growth stages of winter wheat. A hyperspectral sensor mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle was used to obtain vegetation indices and red-edge parameters, and stepwise regression (SWR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) methods were used to accurately estimate the AGB and LAI based on these vegetation indices, red-edge parameters, and their combination. The results show that: (i) most of the studied vegetation indices and red-edge parameters are significantly highly correlated with AGB and LAI; (ii) overall, the correlations between vegetation indices and AGB and LAI, respectively, are stronger than those between red-edge parameters and AGB and LAI, respectively; (iii) Compared with the estimations using only vegetation indices or red-edge parameters, the estimation of AGB and LAI using a combination of vegetation indices and red-edge parameters is more accurate; and (iv) The estimations of AGB and LAI obtained using the PLSR method are superior to those obtained using the SWR method. Crop residue left in the field after harvest helps to protect against water and wind erosion, increase soil organic matter, and improve soil quality, so a proper estimate of the quantity of crop residue is crucial to optimize tillage and for research into environmental effects. Although remote-sensing-based techniques to estimate crop residue cover (CRC) have proven to be good tools for determining CRC, their application is limited by variations in the moisture of crop residue and soil. In this study, we propose a crop residue angle index (CRAI) to estimate the CRC for four distinct soils with varying soil moisture (SM) content and crop residue moisture (CRM). The current study uses laboratory-based tests ((i) a dry dataset (air-dried soils and crop residues, n = 392); (ii) a wet dataset (wet soils and crop residues, n = 822); (iii) a saturated dataset (saturated soils and crop residues, n = 402); and (iv) all datasets (n = 1616)), which allows us to analysis the soil and crop residue hyperspectral response to varying SM/CRM. The CRAI combines two features that reflect the moisture content in soil and crop residue. The first is the different reflectance of soil and crop residue as a function of moisture in the near-infrared band (833 nm) and short-wave near-infrared band (1670 nm), and the second is different reflectance of soils and crop residues to lignin, cellulose, and moisture in the bands at 2101, 2031, and 2201 nm. The effects of moisture and soil type on the proposed CRAI and selected traditional spectral indices ((i) hyperspectral cellulose absorption index; (ii) hyperspectral shortwave infrared normalized difference residue index; and (iii) selected broad-band spectral indices) were compared by using a laboratory-based dataset. The results show that the SM/CRM significantly affects the broad-band spectral indices and all other spectral indices investigated are less correlated with CRC when using all datasets than when using only the dry, wet, or saturated dataset. Laboratory study suggests that the CRAI is promising for estimating CRC with the four soils and with varying SM/CRM. However, because the CRAI was only validated by a laboratory-based dataset, additional field testing is thus required to verify the use of satellite hyperspectral remote-sensing images for different crops and ecological areas.
