Precision agriculture integrates multiple sensors and data types to support farmers with informed decision-making tools throughout crop cycles. This study evaluated Aboveground Biomass (AGB) estimates of Rye using attributes derived from PlanetScope (PS) optical, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and hybrid (optical plus SAR) datasets. Optical attributes encompassed surface reflectance from PS's blue, green, red, and near-infrared (NIR) bands, alongside the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). Sentinel-1 SAR attributes included the C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar Ground Range Detected, VV and HH polarizations, and both Ratio and Polarization (Pol) indices. Ground reference AGB data for Rye (Secale cereal L.) were collected from 50 samples and four dates at a farm located in southern Brazil, aligning with image acquisition dates. Multiple linear regression models were trained and validated. AGB was estimated based on individual (optical PS or Sentinel-1 SAR) and combined datasets (optical plus SAR). This process was repeated 100 times, and variable importance was extracted. Results revealed improved Rye AGB estimates with integrated optical and SAR data. Optical vegetation indices displayed higher correlation coefficients (r) for AGB estimation (r = +0.67 for both EVI and NDVI) compared to SAR attributes like VV, Ratio, and polarization (r ranging from −0.52 to −0.58). However, the hybrid regression model enhanced AGB estimation (R2 = 0.62, p < 0.01), reducing RMSE to 579 kg·ha−1. Using only optical or SAR data yielded R2 values of 0.51 and 0.42, respectively (p < 0.01). In the hybrid model, the most important predictors were VV, NIR, blue, and EVI. Spatial distribution analysis of predicted Rye AGB unveiled agricultural zones associated with varying biomass throughout the cover crop development. Our findings underscored the complementarity of optical with SAR data to enhance AGB estimates of cover crops, offering valuable insights for agricultural zoning to support soil and cash crop management. Blowdown events are a major natural disturbance in the central Amazon Forest, but their impact and subsequent vegetation recovery have been poorly understood. This study aimed to track post-disturbance regeneration after blowdown events in the Amazon Forest. We analyzed 45 blowdown sites identified after September 2020 at Amazonas, Mato Grosso, and Colombia jurisdictions using Landsat-8 and PlanetScope NICFI satellite imagery. Non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), green vegetation (GV), and shade fractions were calculated for each image and sensor using spectral mixture analysis in Google Earth Engine. The results showed that PlanetScope NICFI data provided more regular and higher-spatial-resolution observations of blowdown areas than Landsat-8, allowing for more accurate characterization of post-disturbance vegetation recovery. Specifically, NICFI data indicated that just four months after the blowdown event, nearly half of ΔNPV, which represents the difference between the NPV after blowdown and the NPV before blowdown, had disappeared. ΔNPV and GV values recovered to pre-blowdown levels after approximately 15 months of regeneration. Our findings highlight that the precise timing of blowdown detection has huge implications on quantification of the magnitude of damage. Landsat data may miss important changes in signal due to the difficulty of obtaining regular monthly observations. Land management and deforestation in tropical regions cause wildfires and forest degradation, leading to a loss of ecosystem services and global climate regulation. The objective of the study was to provide a comprehensive assessment of the spatial extent and patterns of burned areas in a new deforestation frontier in the Amazonas state. The methodology applied cross-referenced burned area data from 2003 to 2019 with climate, land cover, private properties and Protected Areas information and performed a series of statistical tests. The influence of the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) contributed to a decreasing rainfall anomalies trend and increasing temperature anomalies trend. This process intensified the dry season and increased the extent of annual natural vegetation affected by fires, reaching a peak of 681 km2 in 2019. The results showed that the increased deforestation trend occurred mostly in public lands, mainly after the new forest code, leading to an increase in fires from 66 to 84% in 2019. The methods developed here could identify fire extent, trends, and relationship with land cover change and climate, thus pointing to priority areas for preservation. Fire is a major forest degradation component in the Amazon forests. Therefore, it is important to improve our understanding of how the post-fire canopy structure changes cascade through the spectral signals registered by medium-resolution satellite sensors over time. We contrasted accumulated yearly temporal changes in forest aboveground biomass (AGB), measured in permanent plots, and in traditional spectral indices derived from Landsat-8 images. We tested if the spectral indices can improve Random Forest (RF) models of post-fire AGB losses based on pre-fire AGB, proxied by AGB data from immediately after a fire. The delta normalized burned ratio, non-photosynthetic vegetation, and green vegetation (ΔNBR, ΔNPV, and ΔGV, respectively), relative to pre-fire data, were good proxies of canopy damage through tree mortality, even though small and medium trees were the most affected tree size. Among all tested predictors, pre-fire AGB had the highest RF model importance to predicting AGB within one year after fire. However, spectral indices significantly improved AGB loss estimates by 24% and model accuracy by 16% within two years after a fire, with ΔGV as the most important predictor, followed by ΔNBR and ΔNPV. Up to two years after a fire, this study indicates the potential of structural and spectral-based spatial data for integrating complex post-fire ecological processes and improving carbon emission estimates by forest fires in the Amazon. • We delineated management zones using cover-crop AGB estimates from PlanetScope data. • Cover-crop AGB (forage turnip, white oats, rye) was correlated with cash-crop yield. • Four of seven regression models (SVM, SGB, CUB, and RF) had similar AGB performance. • Management zones from cover-crop AGB agreed with those from cash-crop yields. • Cover-crop AGB estimates at the date of maximum VI were a proxy of management zones. Several methods have been proposed to delineate management zones in agricultural fields, which can guide interventions of the farmers to increase crop yield. In this study, we propose a new approach using remote sensing data to delineate management zones at three farm sites located in southern Brazil. The approach is based on the hypothesis that the measured aboveground biomass (AGB) of the cover crops is correlated with the measured cash-crop yield and can be estimated from surface reflectance and/or vegetation indices (VIs). Therefore, we used seven different statistical models to estimate AGB of three cover crops (forage turnip, white oats, and rye) in the season prior to cash-crop planting. Surface reflectance and VIs were used as predictors to test the performance of the models. They were obtained from high spatial and temporal resolution data of the PlanetScope (PS) constellation of satellites. From the time series of 30 images acquired in 2017, we used the PS data that matched the dates of the field campaigns to build the models. The results showed that the satellite AGB estimates of the cover crops at the date of maximum VI response at the beginning of the flowering stage were useful to delineate the management zones. The cover-crop AGB models that presented the highest coefficient of determination (R2) and the lowest root mean square (RMSE) in the validation and test datasets were Support Vector Machine (SVM), Cubist (CUB) and Stochastic Gradient Boosting (SGB). For most models and cover crops, the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were the two most important AGB predictors. At the date of maximum VI at the beginning of the flowering stage, the correlation coefficients (r) between the cover-crop AGB and the cash-crop yield (soybean and maize) ranged from +0.70 for forage turnip to +0.78 for rye. The fuzzy unsupervised classification of the cover-crop AGB estimates delineated two management zones, which were spatially consistent with those obtained from cash-crop yield. The comparison between both maps produced overall accuracies that ranged from 61.20% to 68.25% with zone 2 having higher cover-crop AGB and cash-crop yield than zone 1 over the three sites. We conclude that satellite AGB estimates of cover crops can be used as a proxy for generating management zone maps in agricultural fields. Logging, including selective and illegal activities, is widespread, affecting the carbon cycle and the biodiversity of tropical forests. However, automated approaches using very high resolution (VHR) satellite data (≤1 m spatial resolution) to accurately track these small-scale human disturbances over large and remote areas are not readily available. The main constraint for performing this type of analysis is the lack of spatially accurate tree-scale validation data. In this study, we assessed the potential of VHR satellite imagery to detect canopy tree loss related to selective logging in closed-canopy tropical forests. To do this, we compared the tree loss detection capability of WorldView-2 and GeoEye-1 satellites with airborne LiDAR, which acquired pre- and post-logging data at the Jamari National Forest in the Brazilian Amazon. We found that logging drove changes in canopy height ranging from −5.6 to −42.2 m, with a mean reduction of −23.5 m. A simple LiDAR height difference threshold of −10 m was enough to map 97% of the logged trees. Compared to LiDAR, tree losses can be detected using VHR satellite imagery and a random forest (RF) model with an average precision of 64%, while mapping 60% of the total tree loss. Tree losses associated with large gap openings or tall trees were more successfully detected. In general, the most important remote sensing metrics for the RF model were standard deviation statistics, especially those extracted from the reflectance of the visible bands (R, G, B), and the shadow fraction. While most small canopy gaps closed within ~2 years, larger gaps could still be observed over a longer time. Nevertheless, the use of annual imagery is advised to reach acceptable detectability. Our study shows that VHR satellite imagery has the potential for monitoring the logging in tropical forests and detecting hotspots of natural disturbance with a low cost at the regional scale. Amazon forest leaf phenology patterns have often been inferred from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). But reliable MODIS detection of seasonal and interannual leaf phenology patterns has also been questioned and is generally not validated with field observation. Here we compare inter-annual patterns of local-scale upper canopy leaf phenology and demography derived from tower-mounted phenocams at two upland forest sites in the Central Amazon, to corresponding satellite vegetation indices retrieved from MODIS-MAIAC (Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction). We focus on forest response to an unprecedented drought caused by the El Niño of 2015-16. At both sites, multi-year phenocam data showed post-drought shifts in leaf demography. These were consistent with MODIS-MAIAC anomalies in two vegetation indices. Specifically, a precocious leaf flush at both sites during the first two post-drought months, Feb-Mar 2016, caused (1) an anomalous decrease in flushing trees in Jun–Jul of 2016 and (2) an increase of trees with early mature stage leaves (2-4 mo age) in Apr-May-Jun of 2016. At both sites, these two phenological anomalies showed up in MODIS-MAIAC as, respectively, (1) a strong negative anomaly in Gcc (Green chromatic coordinate), which prior work has shown to be sensitive to the abundance of leaves 0-1 mo old, and (2) a strong positive anomaly in EVI, which is sensitive to abundance of leaves 2-4 mo age.
