In the contemporary philosophy secularism is broadly discussed. However, the problem is far more complex than it may seem at the first glance. For secularism is not only state’s separation from religion, but also a number of other postulates and presumptions which are often forgotten. Charles Taylor presents his theory of secularism in the book Secularism and Freedom of Conscience where he distinguishes two groups of postulates of secularism. In this article I will focus myself on five matters concerning the postulate of neutrality towards religion, which arises on the grounds of Taylor concept, but also transcend it. Reflections on the state’s neutrality towards religion also constitute a ground to ask about the sense of secularism and its real application in public life.

As a universal human phenomenon, religion is rooted in human nature, and human beings instinctively require a superior and supreme power. Besides this internal need for religion, attention to the meaning, function, and interpretation of religion has always been prevalent in the history of human thought from West to East, and scholars have always tried to comment on and analyze this fundamental issue of human life . From among the approaches that arose about the interpretation and explanation of religion, rationalism tendency—influenced by evolution—has stood up because in the establishment of religion, rationalism takes its genesis and evolution as manifestations of the evolution of human thought, and it takes the development and evolution of religion as equal. This approach considers religion as answer to the need of the cognitive need of human beings. In this anthropological approach, religion is the product of primitive human beings’ effort to identify objects and events in the surrounding environment. As a results, as the man’s knowledge of the world around him increases, the need for religion decreases . Anthropologist like Edward Tylor and James Frazer have taken this view to the origin and evolution of religion. They emphasize on principles such as the bodily and cognitive unity of the mind, the survival principal, and the evolutionary intellectual pattern of human beings in order to interpret religion stages from animism and magic till monism and monotheism, which will eventually decline during the development of science . Taylor regards anthropology as the best scientific method to achieve a universal theory to understand the origin of religion. Based on its psychological unity, religion in all times and places—despite its diversity—is a unique phenomenon and has an exclusive identity because the very existence of commonalities in all practices and customs of the people of the world is indicative of the basic similarity of the mind. According to Taylor, the whole world is also like a single country based on the fundamental principle of human intellectual and cultural development. So, any diversity in human species is not synonymous with diversity in kind, but it is the difference in the level of cultural evolution. This degree of cultural evolution can be found in all societies and, therefore, the cultural/cognitive evolution of human beings and the basic form of the human mind are all connected . As a matter of fact, the religious and cultural evolution of primitive man to modern one is the evolution of human rationality. In his view, there are three methods to understand the howness of the evolution of human cognition: magical, religious, and scientific . That is why Taylor differentiates between magic and religion. He takes magic not based on spiritual entities but on impersonal powers and forces. According to him, magic works in line with the principle of similarity and association, and because the things that are similar have a causal relationship with each other, so magic is pseudo-science, but it is rooted in false reasoning. Taylor’s view, especially that of religion and magic, has influenced Fraser to a large extent. On the word of Taylor, the belief in spirits that think and act like human beings abounds in in all religions. So, in his view, the essence of religion and religious myths is faith-animism. Therefore, Taylor has proposed animism as the source and origin of primitive religions, and he takes the following as the developmental stages of religion: animism, nature worship, polytheism, monotheism, and metaphysical thought . The relationship between magic and religion is the key issue for Fraser. According to Fraser, the first and most important principle to understand magic and religion was that the life of primitive man centered around the struggle for life, such as killing animals by hunters. According to him, the founding reasoning principles for magic are two: (1) Anything can make something like itself or an effect resembles its cause. This principal is the very law of similarity. (2) The things that were in touch once will affect each other, even after separation. This principle is the very law of contact. Fraser believes that many religious practices and human traditions throughout the history emanated from this thought . Fraser believed that the magical beliefs of primitive man was based on false reasoning, resulting from his ignorance and justifiable in accordance with the living conditions and performance of his early ancestors. So, magic may be like science but a false one, and that is why modern man does not buy it, for the world does not act in line with the pattern of empathy, contact, and resemblance that wizards appeal to. That is why religion replaces magic as its function declines. The fact of the matter is that magic is the very primitive and unsophisticated science through which early man wanted to control and possess material objects since both magic and science apply methods that are based on a coherent worldview—consciously and unconsciously—in order to achieve human goals. Fraser also considers the developmental stages of religion from magic to religion and eventually scientism and the scientific interpretation of facts . This anthropological approach suffers from two fundamental points: (1) Lack of reliance on objective and historical data as well as proposed theories, which is a methodological issue in religious studies, (2) there is a content question because the presupposition that the elements, functions, qualities of all religions are identical, on the one hand, and lack of attention to metaphysical and sentimental dimensions of religion, on the other, are highly criticized by religious professionals

Avec L’Âge séculier (2007), Charles Taylor couronnait une œuvre consacrée à la genèse de la modernité et à la pensée du multiple. Il reconstituait la diversité des moments et des réflexions qui menèrent à un âge séculier, aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Mais loin de constituer une synthèse humaniste, laissant derrière lui l’âge théologique, celui-ci éclate à son tour aux XIXe et XXe siècles, par un « effet supernova » comme Taylor l’a joliment appelé, en une multitude de galaxies nouvelles, où les athéismes côtoient des humanismes déistes mais aussi des « retours de Dieu » surprenants d’expressivité. Ce sont les diverses facettes remarquables de cet Âge séculier que traitent les auteurs de ce livre : sa place dans l’œuvre de Taylor, sa théorie complexe de la sécularisation, certains de ses moments historiques, son intérêt – ou non – dans l’actualité des religions. 24. Democracy and secularism: remarks on an ongoing dispute

This paper focus on the disputed issue concerning the proper role of religion in politics, confronting the contributions of three major contemporary political thinkers about democracy and secularism. I present, first, Charles Taylor’s characterization of secularist regimes as attempts to secure the basic principles of the modern moral order. Next, I argue that John Rawls’s growing interest in the relation between religion and democracy led him to an even more inclusive view of public reason. Thirdly, I show that Jürgen Habermas preserves a distinction between faith and knowledge that proves essential to grasping the debate over the place of religion in the public sphere. All three thinkers are concerned with the appropriate forum for the basic political language of the secular state. In a nutshell, my interpretation highlights a much greater proximity between Habermas and Rawls on political justification, on the one hand, and between the former and Taylor regarding the normative basis for the secular state, on the other hand, than their various interventions seem to indicate.

The paper attempts to analyze the theoretical conditions of the possible conflict between the New Atheism and modern secular liberal democracies. After short presentation of a few main components of neoatheistic thinking I concentrate on the notion of secularism as proposed by Charles Taylor. I conclude that by identifying the religion as “the root of all evil” the New Atheists are revealing the unjustifiable lack of judgment, as their aggressive antireligious stance generates rather crises and conflicts than social harmony. Artykuł jest próbą analizy teoretycznych warunków możliwego konfliktu między nowym ateizmem a współczesnymi liberalnymi, świeckimi demokracjami. Po krótkiej prezentacji kilku głównych składników myślenia neoateistycznego koncentruję się na pojęciu sekularyzmu w wersji zaproponowanej przez Charlesa Taylora. Dochodzę do wniosku, że nowi ateiści, utożsamiając religię ze „źródłem wszelkiego zła”, wykazują się brakiem rozwagi, ponieważ ich agresywna, antyreligijna postawa generuje raczej kryzysy i konflikty niż społeczną harmonię.

In A Secular Age Charles Taylor endorses Mikhail Epstein's notion of 'minimal religion' as his preferred orientation to the good for Western secular society. This article examines the basis of Epstein's 'minimal religion' which rests on the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. It is shown that Freud's theories are incompatible with Taylor's own thought, and in the case of Jung, Epstein fails to develop the latter's contribution to our understanding of religion. Moreover, although Taylor endorses Epstein's work he makes no reference to Jung. To this end, the importance of Jung's theories in relation to religion are elucidated and offered as a way to forge a dialogue between a nuanced humanist position and the theistic vision offered by Taylor. The paper 'The Effect of Economic Conditions on Union Membership: A Quantitative and Historical Analysis' suggests that downturns in the economy have had a more significant effect on women than men in unions, leading to significant declines in membership of women in unions. The paper 'Magnus Alexander, the Economists and Labor Turnover' chronicles the pioneering work conducted by General Electric executive Magnus Alexander in measuring the cost of labor turnover and the impact this had not only on wider management practice, but also on academic economics. The paper 'The Relationship Between Discourse in Print Media and Adoption of Workplace Substance Abuse Programs' examines the history of media attention to workplace substance abuse and how organizations have responded to this issue over time. The paper 'The Evolution of Corporate Governance' examines the origins of corporate governance and the events during the 20th century that have failed to align the interests of management and shareholders.

Increasing secularization seems to fly in the face of Christian proposals for a Scripture-only principle for theology. The question that this dissertation explores is "How will Christian theology tackle the resulting church-society impasse in a way that is both faithful to Scripture and intelligible contemporaneously without appearing to privilege one aspect over the other?" That is, "What form should theological method take to efficaciously engage the secular?" This study suggests that the answer might lie in an innovative fusion of Scripture with borrowed concepts from secular culture. Thus, this dissertation responds to the problem of the need for robust, multidimensional theological methodology that seeks to enhance engagement with secular philosophy and culture. In the wake of cultural shifts and secular dynamics, this dissertation draws from Charles Taylor's articulation of modern social imaginaries and the accompanying theses of secularity. This study shows how, in Taylor's view, secularists have derived their self-understanding and ethos of economic human flourishing by way of continual shifts and interactions in perceptions of philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and theology (PAST). From this perspective, the dissertation demonstrates how the secular identity is entangled in economics (οἰκονόμος)—material aspects of human activity (wealth production). Methodologically, utilizing a four-pronged approach, this dissertation examines these important concepts: first, by reading through lenses of selected genealogical dynamics of modern social imaginaries; secondly, via the contours of Charles Taylor's articulation of secularity; thirdly, via scriptural analyses of social imaginaries and human flourishing; and fourthly, by expanding their horizon of meaning by redeploying lessons, implications, and rereadings derived from applying a Spirit-directed Scripture-principle to propose a sketch of a multidimensional model toward secular engagement. The chapters of this dissertation extend secular considerations beyond a social science perspective to the biblical canon allowing the new biblical lens to broaden the term "human flourishing" from economics to a more wholistic conception and producing new understandings of PAST and οἰκονόμος. Connecting the conversation about secularity, social imaginaries, and human flourishing with ongoing discussions about theological method, and articulating for rereadings, the dissertation concludes by proposing a three-dimensional model—secular, canonical, and stewardship (οἰκονόμος)—that appears as a potentially powerful response toward secular engagement. These tentative findings enhance the study's contributions: interdisciplinary, explicit multidimensionality, explicit application of human flourishing as key to secular engagement, and an explicitly practical aspect in the form of a reoriented theology of stewardship as one's way of living in the world. By focusing on these complementary dimensions, the study seeks to create a sense of how they work together and how they produce a rich interdisciplinary reservoir which is key to a multidimensional strategy toward secular engagement.

The article 'The Gospel According to St. Frederick: The Shared Beliefs of F W Taylor and Scudder Klyce,' by Lois Landis Kurowski and Michael Rowlinson, focuses on the neglected correspondence between Taylor and a young lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Scudder Klyce, who proposed Scientific Management as a working, real and practical religion, which Taylor appeared to endorse. The article 'Breaking Kayfabe: An Exploration of the History of the History,' by Fiona McQuarrie, attempts to illuminate some of the problems identified by criticisms of management history. In the article 'Xenophon as Leadership Theorist: An Early Model of Leader Behavior and Follower Work Motivation,' by John Humphreys, the theory and practice from the disparate writings of the ancient Athenian Xenophon, a pupil of Socrates, was integrated to reveal an early model of effective leader behavior and subsequent follower motivation sufficiently robust to accommodate the modern work environment.
