Abstract

Awareness of the intersectionality of a person's religious and spiritual belief system with their mental and physical health is slowly being elevated within the Western healthcare system. There are many opportunities for better understanding and incorporation of religious and spiritual beliefs into aphasia rehabilitation. To extend the recognition of religion and spirituality's importance in healthcare to persons living with post-stroke aphasia while emphasizing the diversity of beliefs, the current article seeks to provide a brief overview of the global religions; explain the intersection of religion, spirituality, and health; review the existing literature in the area of aphasia and religion, spirituality, and spiritual care; discuss the clinical importance and implications of religion and spirituality; and finally, lay out a forward view of the direction this area of exploration may take within aphasiology. Abstract

Research suggests opposite epidemiological forces in religion and health: (1). Faith seems to move mountains in the sense that religion is associated with positive health outcomes. (2). Mountains of bad health seem to move faith. We reflected on these forces in a population of 3000 young Danish twins in which all religiosity measures were associated with severe disease. We believe the reason for this novel finding is that the sample presents as a particularly secular population-based study and that the second epidemiological force has gained the upper hand in this sample. We suggest that all cross-sectional research on religion and health should be interpreted in light of such opposite epidemiological forces potentially diluting each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper focuses on the functioning of the Catholic Church in the Tachov micro-region. It analyses how the key figures (Catholic clergymen and religious lay people) perceive religious socialization and the role played by religious memory during the socialization process. I chose the Tachov micro-region because the presence of the Catholic Church was extremely strong there up until the end of World War II. After the end of the War, however, the majority of the region's inhabitants (Sudetenland Germans) were expelled and its character changed dramatically. It currently ranks among the least religious regions in the Czech Republic. The data were gathered as part of my own ethnographic research over the period between January 2014 and July 2015. Abstract

The Hieroi Logoi (or'Sacred Tales') of Aelius Aristides presents a unique first-person narrative from the ancient world-one that seems at once public and private, artful and naive. A prominent rhetor among the educated elite of second-century Asia Minor, Aristides produced a substantial body of polished discourses, declamations, and hymns. Within his oeuvre, however, the unparalleled Logoi stand out, and while scholars have embraced it as a rich source for Imperial-era religion, politics, and elite culture, the style of the text has presented a persistent stumbling block to literary analysis. Setting this dream-memoir of illness and divine healing in the context of Aristides'professional concerns as an orator, this book investigates the text's rhetorical aims and literary aspirations. At the Limits of Art argues that the Hieroi Logoi is an experimental work. Incorporating numerous dream accounts and narratives of divine cure in a multi-layered and open text, Aristides works at the limits of rhetorical convention to fashion an authorial voice that is transparent to the divine. Reading the Logoi in the context of contemporary oratorical practices, and in tandem with Aristides'polemical orations and prose hymns, the book uncovers the professional agendas motivating this unusual self-portrait. Aristides'sober view of oratory as a sacred pursuit was in tension with a widespread contemporary preference for spectacular public performance. In the Hieroi Logoi, he claims a place in the world of the Second Sophistic on his own terms, offering a vision of his professional inspiration in a style that pushes the limits of literary convention.
