The photon mean free path in a relativistically moving medium becomes long in the down-stream direction while short in the up-stream direction. As a result, the observed optical depth $\tau$ becomes small in the downstream direction while large in the upstream direction. Hence, if a relativistic spherical wind blows off, the optical depth depends strongly on its speed and the angle between the velocity and the line-of-sight. Abramowicz et al. (1991) examined such a relativistic wind, and found that the shape of the photosphere at $\tau=1$ appears convex in the non-relativistic case, but concave for relativistic velocities. We further calculated the temperature distribution and luminosity of the photosphere both in the comoving and inertial frames. We found that the limb-darkening effect would strongly modified in the relativistic regime. We also found that luminosities of the photosphere becomes large as the wind speed increases due to the relativistic effects. In addition, the luminosity in the inertial frame is higher than that in the comoving frame. These results suggest that the observed temperature and brightness in luminous objects may be overestimated when there are strong relativistic winds., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The structure of the Lorentz transformations follows purely from the absence of privileged inertial reference frames and the group structure (closure under composition) of the transformations---two assumptions that are simple and physically necessary. The existence of an invariant speed is \textit{not} a necessary assumption, and in fact is a consequence of the principle of relativity (though the finite value of this speed must, of course, be obtained from experiment). Von Ignatowsky derived this result in 1911, but it is still not widely known and is absent from most textbooks. An alternate Lorentz transformation, Absolute Lorentz Transformation (ALT), has similar kinematics to special relativity yet maintains absolute simultaneity in the context of a preferred reference frame. In this study, it is shown that ALT is compatible with current experiments to test Lorentz invariance only if the proposed preferred reference frame is locally equivalent to the Earth-centered non-rotating inertial reference frame, with the inference that in an ALT framework, preferred reference frames are associated with centers of gravitational mass. Applying this theoretical framework to cosmological data produces a scenario of universal time contraction in the past. In this scenario, past time contraction would be associated with increased levels of blueshifted light emissions from cosmological objects when viewed from our current perspective. The observation that distant Type Ia supernovae are dimmer than predicted by linear Hubble expansion currently provides the most direct evidence for an accelerating universe. Adjusting for the effects of time contraction on a redshift–distance modulus diagram produces a linear distribution of supernovae over the full redshift spectrum that is consistent with a non-accelerating universe.

Several approaches to quantum gravity suggest that the standard description of spacetime as probed at low-energy, with four dimensions, is replaced in the Planckian regime by a spacetime with a spectral dimension of two. The implications for relativistic symmetries can be momentous, and indeed the most tangible picture for "running" of the spectral dimension, found within Horava-Lifshitz gravity, requires the breakdown of relativity of inertial frames. In this Letter we incorporate running spectral dimensions in a scenario that does not require the emergence of a preferred frame. We consider the best studied mechanism for deforming relativistic symmetries whilst preserving the relativity of inertial frames, based on a momentum space with curvature at the Planck scale. We show explicitly how running of the spectral dimension can be derived from these models. © 2014 The Authors.

Among the possible explanations for the puzzling observations of cosmic rays above the GZK cutoff there is growing interest in the ones that represent kinematical solutions, based either on general formulations of particle physics with small violations of Lorentz symmetry or on a quantum-gravity-motivated scheme for the breakup of Lorentz symmetry. An unappealing aspect of these cosmic-ray-puzzle solutions is that they require the existence of a preferred class of inertial observers. Here I propose a new kinematical solution of the cosmic-ray puzzle, which does not require the existence of a preferred class of inertial observers. My proposal is a new example of a type of relativistic theories, the so-called "doubly-special-relativity" theories, which have already been studied extensively over the last two years. The core ingredient of the proposal is a deformation of Lorentz transformations in which also the Planck scale $E_p$ (in addition to the speed-of-light scale $c$) is described as an invariant. Just like the introduction of the invariant $c$ requires a deformation of the Galileian transformations into the Lorentz transformations, the introduction of the invariant $E_p$ requires a deformation of the Lorentz transformations, but there is no special class of inertial observers. The Pierre Auger Observatory and the GLAST space telescope should play a key role in future developments of these investigations. I also emphasize that the doubly-special-relativity theory here proposed, besides being the first one to provide a solution for the cosmic-ray puzzle, is also the first one in which a natural description of macroscopic bodies is achieved, and may find applications in the context of a recently-proposed dark-energy scenario., Comment: LaTex (revtex), 9 pages
