Background: Brief motivational interventions (BMIs) are one of the most effective individually focused alcohol intervention strategies for college students. Despite the central theoretical role of motivation for change in BMIs, it is unclear whether BMIs increase motivation to change drinking behavior. We conducted a two‐step meta‐analysis of individual participant data (IPD) to examine whether BMIs increase motivation for change. N = 5903;59% women, 72% White) from Project INTEGRATE. The BMIs included individually delivered motivational interviewing with personalized feedback (MI + PF), stand‐alone personalized feedback (PF), and group‐based motivational interviewing (GMI). Methods: We included 15 trials of BMI (N = 5903;59% women, 72% White) from Project INTEGRATE. The BMIs included individually‐delivered motivational interviewing with personalized feedback (MI + PF), stand‐alone personalized feedback (PF), and group‐based motivational interviewing (GMI). Different measures and responses used in the original trials were harmonized. Effect size estimates were derived from a model that adjusted for baseline motivation and demographic variables for each trial (step 1) and subsequently combined in a random‐effects meta‐analysis (step 2). Results: The overall intervention effect of BMIs on motivation for change was not statistically significant (standard mean difference [SMD]: 0.026, 95% CI: [−0.001, 0.053], p = 0.06, k = 19 comparisons). Of the three subtypes of BMIs, GMI, which tended to provide motivation‐targeted content, had a statistically significant intervention effect on motivation, compared with controls (SMD: 0.055, 95% CI: [0.007, 0.103], p = 0.025, k = 5). By contrast, there was no evidence that MI + PF (SMD = 0.04, 95% CI: [−0.02, 0.10], k = 6, p = 0.20) nor PF increased motivation (SMD = 0.005, 95% CI: [−0.028, 0.039], k = 8, p = 0.75), compared with controls. Post hoc meta‐regression analysis suggested that motivation sharply decreased each month within the first 3 months postintervention (b = −0.050, z = −2.80, p = 0.005 for k = 14). Conclusions: Although BMIs provide motivational content and normative feedback and are assumed to motivate behavior change, the results do not wholly support the hypothesis that BMIs improve motivation for change. Changing motivation is difficult to assess during and following interventions, but it is still a theoretically important clinical endpoint. Aims: To estimate effects of brief substance use interventions delivered in general medical settings. Methods: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized trials conducted since 1990 of brief substance use interventions in patients of any age or severity level recruited in general medical settings. Primary outcomes were any measure of substance use or substance‐related consequences (indexed with Hedges' g and risk ratios). Mixed‐effects meta‐regressions were used to estimate overall effects and predictors of effect variability. Analyses were conducted separately by brief intervention (BI) target substance: alcohol only or drugs. Findings A total of 116 trials (64 439 participants) were identified; 111 (62 263 participants) provided effect size data and were included in the meta‐analysis. Drug‐targeted BIs yielded significant small improvements in multiple drug/mixed substance use (Hedges' g(g¯) = 0.08; 95% CI = 0.002, 0.15), but after adjusting for multiple comparisons, they did not produce significant effects on cannabis use (g¯ = 0.06; 95% CI = 0.001, 0.12), alcohol use (g¯ = 0.08; 95% CI = −0.0003, 0.17), or consequences (g¯ = 0.05; 95% CI = 0.01, 0.10). Drug‐targeted BIs yielded larger improvements in multiple drug/mixed substance use when delivered by a general practitioner (g¯ = 0.19; 95% CI = 0.187, 0.193). Alcohol‐targeted BIs yielded small beneficial effects on alcohol use (g¯ = 0.12; 95% CI 0.08, 0.16), but no evidence of an effect on consequences (g¯ = 0.05; 95% CI = −0.04, 0.13). However, alcohol‐targeted BIs only had beneficial effects on alcohol use when delivered in general medical settings (g¯ = 0.17; 95% CI = 0.10, 0.24); the findings were inconclusive for those delivered in emergency department/trauma centers (g¯ = 0.05; 95% CI = 0.00, 0.10). Conclusions: When delivered in general medical settings, alcohol‐targeted brief interventions may produce small beneficial reductions in drinking (equivalent to a reduction in 1 drinking day per month). Introduction: Individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience long-term cognitive impairment that affects daily functioning, but neuropsychological tests are often not associated with functional outcomes in chronic TBI. To identify better neuropsychological test predictors of functional outcomes, we identified process-oriented neuropsychological test scores associated with behavioral dysfunction in chronic TBI. Method: Adults (N = 65, age = 49.9 years, education = 14.6 years, 80% male, 97% white) with a > 6-month (median = 55 months) history of TBI (31% complicated mild, 20% moderate, 49% severe) completed the self-reported Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe) and a battery of neuropsychological tests. Cognitive scores significantly associated with FrSBe domain scores (Apathy, Disinhibition, Executive Dysfunction) were included in hierarchical linear regression analyses. Results: Pearson correlations were significant (|r| =.25 –.41, p <.05) between FrSBe Disinhibition and Executive Dysfunction domains and numerous cognitive scores, particularly cognitive process scores, including California Verbal Learning Test II (CVLT-II) and Letter (FAS) Fluency Intrusions and Repetitions. In the regression analyses, gender, injury severity, premorbid intelligence, time since injury, self-awareness, and depression status accounted for less than 1% (Disinhibition) and 6.1% (Executive Dysfunction) of the total adjusted variance in respective FrSBe domains. Cognitive process scores were the strongest factors associated with behavioral dysfunction, explaining an additional 22.9% of the total adjusted variance in Disinhibition [F(3, 50) = 6.28, p =.001]. For Executive Dysfunction, traditional scores explained 2.6% added variance on top of the base model, with cognitive process scores explaining an additional 17.2% [F(4, 48) = 6.79, p =.003] of the total adjusted variance. Conclusions: Less frequently utilized cognitive process scores from well-known neuropsychological tests may be better predictors of behavioral dysfunction in chronic TBI, as measured by the FrSBe. Future prospective study is required to validate these findings and test the sensitivity and specificity of these cognitive process scores for identifying risk for behavioral dysfunction. Background. Beginning in 2010, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) funded more than 40 evaluations of adolescent pregnancy prevention interventions. The government's emphasis on rigor and transparency, along with a requirement that grantees collect standardized behavioral outcomes, ensured that findings could be meaningfully compared across evaluations. Objectives. We used random and mixed-effects meta-analysis to analyze the findings generated by these evaluations to learn whether program elements, program implementation features, and participant demographics were associated with effects on adolescent sexual risk behavior. Search Methods. We screened all 43 independent evaluation reports, some of which included multiple studies, funded by HHS and completed before October 1, 2016. HHS released, and our team considered, all such studies regardless of favorability or statistical significance. Selection Criteria. Of these studies, we included those that used a randomized or high-quality quasi-experimental research design. We excluded studies that did not use statistical matching or provide pretest equivalence data on a measure of sexual behavior or a close proxy. We also excluded studies that compared 2 pregnancy prevention interventions without a control group. A total of 44 studies from 39 reports, comprising 51 150 youths, met the inclusion criteria. Data Collection and Analysis. Two researchers extracted data from each study by using standard systematic reviewing and meta-analysis procedures. In addition, study authors provided individual participant data for a subset of 34 studies. We used mixed-effects meta-regressions with aggregate data to examine whether program or participant characteristics were associated with program effects on adolescent sexual risk behaviors and consequences. To examine whether individual-level participant characteristics such as age, gender, and race/ethnicity were associated with program effects, we used a 1-stage meta-regression approach combining participant-level data (48 635 youths) with aggregate data from the 10 studies for which participant-level data were not available. Main Results. Across all 44 studies, we found small but statistically insignificant mean effects favoring the programs and little variability around those means. Only 2 program characteristics showed statistically reliable relationships with program effects. First, gender-specific (girl-only) programs yielded a statistically significant average effect size (P <.05). Second, programs with individualized service delivery were more effective than programs delivering services to youths in small groups (P <.05). We found no other statistically significant associations between program effects and program or participant characteristics, or evaluation methods. Nor was there a statistically significant difference in the mean effect sizes for programs with previous evidence of effectiveness and previously untested programs. Conclusions. Although several individual studies reported positive impacts, the average effects were small and there was minimal variation in effect sizes across studies on all of the outcomes assessed. Thus, we were unable to confidently identify which individual program characteristics were associated with effects. However, these studies examined relatively short-term effects and it is an open question whether some programs, perhaps with distinctive characteristics, will show longer-term effects as more of the adolescent participants become sexually active. The success of a small number of individualized interventions designed specifically for girls in changing behavioral outcomes suggests the need to reexamine the assumptions that underlie coed group approaches. However, given the almost total absence of similar programs targeting male adolescents, it is likely to be some time before evidence to support or reject such an approach for boys is available. Background: : Neonatal vitamin A supplementation (NVAS) is an intervention hypothesized to reduce infant morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of neonatal vitamin A supplementation in reducing infant morbidity and mortality and assess potential sources of heterogeneity of the effect of NVAS.Methods: : We completed an individually randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Tanzania. Infants were randomized within 3 days of birth to a single dose of vitamin A (50 000 IU) or placebo. We assessed infants at 1 and 3 days after supplementation, as well as 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after supplementation. We included all live births in the analysis and used relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to assess the risks of mortality and hospitalization by 12 months. We used general estimating equations to assess the incidence of morbidities during infancy.Results: : A total of 31 999 infants were enrolled in the study between August 2010 and March 2013. At 12 months, vitamin A did not reduce all-cause infant mortality (RR 1.04; 95% CI 0.92-1.16), nor affect hospitalization (RR 1.09; 95% CI 0.97-1.22) or all-cause morbidity (RR 1.00; 95% CI 0.96-1.05). Postpartum maternal vitamin A supplementation modified the effect of neonatal vitamin A supplementation on mortality at 12 months ( P -value, test for interaction = 0.04). Among infants born to women who received a mega-dose of vitamin A after delivery, NVAS appeared to increase the risk of death (RR 1.12; 95% CI 0.98-1.29), whereas the risk of death among infants born to women who did not receive a mega-dose was reduced (RR 0.86; 95% CI 0.70-1.06). We noted no modification of the effect of NVAS by infant gender, birthweight or maternal HIV status.Conclusion: : NVAS did not affect the risk of death or incidence of common childhood morbidities. However, this study sheds light on potential sources of heterogeneity of the effect of neonatal vitamin A supplementation which should be further examined in a pooled analysis of all NVAS trials. Increased midsole deformation can limit exposure to high impact and vibration magnitudes while running. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of shoes eliciting different midsole deformation on ground reaction forces, heel impact, soft tissue vibrations and bone vibrations. Forty-eight runners performed a 5-min running task on an instrumented treadmill at a self-selected pace with four different shoes. Midsole horizontal and vertical deformations were quantified with relative displacement of seven reflective markers placed on the midsole of the shoe and tracked by eight optoelectronic cameras. Heel impacts, soft tissue and bone vibrations of lower leg muscle groups, sacrum and head were quantified with tri-axial accelerometers. Continuous wavelet transform was used to assess magnitude and frequency of the acceleration data. Linear mixed models and non-parametric one-dimensional regressions between the accelerometer data and shoe deformation were performed. Greater horizontal and vertical deformations decreased the magnitude (up to 4.6% per mm) and frequency (up to 0.6 Hz per mm) of soft tissue vibrations and bone accelerations. Accelerations of the heel, tibia, gastrocnemius medialis and vastus lateralis were more influenced than the sacrum and head. Increasing midsole deformation could therefore mitigate the risk of injury, while increasing running comfort and smoothness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brief interventions aimed at reducing alcohol use among youth may interrupt a possible developmental progression to more serious substance use if they can also affect the use of other illicit drugs. This meta-analysis examined the findings of recent research on the effects of brief alcohol interventions for adolescents and young adults on both alcohol and illicit drug use. Eligible studies were those using randomized or controlled quasi-experimental designs to examine the effects of brief alcohol interventions on illicit drug use outcomes among youth. A comprehensive literature search identified 30 eligible study samples that, on average, included participants age 17, with 57 % male participants and 56 % White youth. Three-level random-effects meta-analyses were used to estimate mean effect sizes and explore variability in effects. Overall, brief interventions targeting both alcohol and other drugs were effective in reducing both of these substances. However, the brief interventions that targeted only alcohol had no significant secondary effects on untargeted illicit drug use. The evidence from current research, therefore, shows modest beneficial effects on outcomes that are targeted by brief interventions for youth, but does not show that those effects generalize to untargeted illicit drug use outcomes. We examined the effects of CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care versus individually delivered prenatal care on gestational age, birth weight, and fetal demise. We conducted a retrospective chart review and used propensity score matching to form a sample of 6,155 women receiving prenatal care delivered in a group or individual format at five sites in Tennessee. Compared to the matched group of women receiving prenatal care in an individual format, women in CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care had longer weeks of gestation ( b = .35, 95 % CI [.29, .41]), higher birth weight in grams ( b = 28.6, 95 % CI [4.8, 52.3]), lower odds of very low birth weight (OR = .21, 95 % CI [.06, .70]), and lower odds of fetal demise (OR = .12, 95 % CI [.02, .92]). Results indicated no evidence of differences in the odds of preterm birth or low birth weight for participants in group versus individual prenatal care. CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care had statistically and clinically significant beneficial effects on very low birth weight and fetal demise outcomes relative to traditional individually delivered prenatal care. Methodologists have recently proposed robust variance estimation as one way to handle dependent effect sizes in meta-analysis. Software macros for robust variance estimation in meta-analysis are currently available for Stata (StataCorp LP, College Station, TX, USA) and spss (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA), yet there is little guidance for authors regarding the practical application and implementation of those macros. This paper provides a brief tutorial on the implementation of the Stata and spss macros and discusses practical issues meta-analysts should consider when estimating meta-regression models with robust variance estimates. OBJECTIVE: To determine the trends and outcomes of the national Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) for infants born from 1994 to 2008. METHODS: PHBPPs in state and city public health jurisdictions annually submitted program outcome reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The annual number of births to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive women was estimated and used to evaluate the percentage of PHBPP-identified HBsAg-positive pregnant women. PHBPP reports were used to assess program objectives achieved, and infant outcomes by 12 to 24 months of age. RESULTS: From 1994 to 2008, the estimated number of annual births to HBsAg-positive women increased from 19 208 to 25 600 (P < .001). The annual number of PHBPP-managed infants increased (P < 001), comprising 40.8% to 50.5% of the estimated number. On average, 94.4% of PHBPP-managed infants received hepatitis B immunoglobulin and hepatitis B vaccine within 1 day of birth. The percentage of infants who completed the vaccine series by age 12 months decreased from 86.0% to 77.7% (P = .004), but the percentage who received postvaccination testing increased from 25.1% to 56.0% (P < .001). Incidence of chronic hepatitis B virus infection among tested infants decreased from 2.1% in 1999 to 0.8% in 2008 (P= .001). CONCLUSIONS: The PHBPP achieved substantial progress in preventing perinatal hepatitis B virus infection in the United States, despite an increasing number of at-risk infants. Significant gaps remain in identifying HBsAg-positive pregnant women, and completing management and assessment of their infants to ensure prevention of perinatal hepatitis B virus transmission. Aims To illustrate a machine learning-based approach for identifying and investigating moderators of alcohol use intervention effects in aggregate-data meta-analysis. Methods We illustrated the machine learning technique of random forest modeling using data from an ongoing meta-analysis of brief substance use interventions implemented in general healthcare settings. A subset of 40 trials testing brief alcohol interventions (BAIs) was used; these trials provided 344 estimates of post-intervention effects on participants' alcohol use as well as data on 20 potential moderators of intervention effects. These candidate moderators included characteristics of trial methodology and implementation, intervention design and participant samples. Results The best-fitting random forest model identified 10 important moderators from the pool of 20 candidate moderators. Meta-regression utilizing the selected moderators found that inclusion of prescriptive advice in a BAI session significantly moderated BAI effects on alcohol use. Observed effects were also significantly moderated by several methodological characteristics of trials, including the type of comparison group used, the overall level of attrition and the strategy used to address missing data. In a meta-regression model that included all candidate moderators, fewer coefficients were found to be significant, indicating that the use of a preliminary data reduction technique to identify only important moderators for inclusion in final analyses may have yielded improved statistical power to detect moderation. Conclusions Machine learning methods can be valuable tools for clarifying the influence of trial, intervention and sample characteristics on alcohol use intervention effects, in particular when numerous candidate moderators are available. To evaluate and optimize brief alcohol interventions (BAIs), it is critical to have a credible overall effect size estimate as a benchmark. Estimating such an effect size has been challenging because alcohol outcomes often represent responses from a mixture of individuals: those at high risk for alcohol misuse, occasional nondrinkers, and abstainers. Moreover, some BAIs exclusively focus on heavy drinkers, whereas others take a universal prevention approach. Depending on sample characteristics, the outcome distribution might have many zeros or very few zeros and overdispersion; consequently, the most appropriate statistical model may differ across studies. We synthesized individual participant data (IPD) from 19 studies in Project INTEGRATE (Mun et al., 2015b) that randomly allocated participants to intervention and control groups (N = 7,704 participants, 38.4% men, 74.7% White, 58.5% first-year students). We sequentially estimated marginalized zero-inflated Poisson (Long et al., 2014) or negative binomial regression models to obtain covariate-adjusted, study-specific intervention effect estimates in the first step, which were subsequently combined in a random-effects meta-analysis model in the second step. BAIs produced a statistically significant 8% advantage in the mean number of drinks at both 1–3 months (RR = 0.92, 95% CI = [0.85, 0.98]) and 6 months (RR = 0.92, 95% CI = [0.85, 0.99]) compared to controls. At 9–12 months, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean number of drinks between BAIs and controls. In conclusion, BAIs are effective at reducing the mean number of drinks through at least 6 months post intervention. Dependent effect sizes are ubiquitous in meta-analysis. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we compared the performance of 2 methods for meta-regression with dependent effect sizes-robust variance estimation (RVE) and 3-level modeling-with the standard meta-analytic method for independent effect sizes. We further compared bias-reduced linearization and jackknife estimators as small-sample adjustments for RVE and Wald-type and likelihood ratio tests for 3-level models. The bias in the slope estimates, width of the confidence intervals around those estimates, and empirical type I error and statistical power rates of the hypothesis tests from these different methods were compared for mixed-effects meta-regression analysis with one moderator either at the study or at the effect size level. All methods yielded nearly unbiased slope estimates under most scenarios, but as expected, the standard method ignoring dependency provided inflated type I error rates when testing the significance of the moderators. Robust variance estimation methods yielded not only the best results in terms of type I error rate but also the widest confidence intervals and the lowest power rates, especially when using the jackknife adjustments. Three-level models showed a promising performance with a moderate to large number of studies, especially with the likelihood ratio test, and yielded narrower confidence intervals around the slope and higher power rates than those obtained with the RVE approach. All methods performed better when the moderator was at the effect size level, the number of studies was moderate to large, and the between-studies variance was small. Background: Few studies have differentiated risk factors for term-small for gestational age (SGA), preterm-appropriate for gestational age (AGA), and preterm-SGA, despite evidence of varying risk of child mortality and poor developmental outcomes.Methods: We analyzed birth outcome data from singleton infants, who were enrolled in a large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of neonatal vitamin A supplementation conducted in Tanzania. SGA was defined as birth weight <10th percentile for gestation age and sex using INTERGROWTH standards and preterm birth as delivery at <37 complete weeks of gestation. Risk factors for term-SGA, preterm-AGA, and preterm-SGA were examined independently using log-binomial regression.Results: Among 19,269 singleton Tanzanian newborns included in this analysis, 68.3 % were term-AGA, 15.8 % term-SGA, 15.5 % preterm-AGA, and 0.3 % preterm-SGA. In multivariate analyses, significant risk factors for term-SGA included maternal age <20 years, starting antenatal care (ANC) in the 3(rd) trimester, short maternal stature, being firstborn, and male sex (all p < 0.05). Independent risk factors for preterm-AGA were maternal age <25 years, short maternal stature, firstborns, and decreased wealth (all p < 0.05). In addition, receiving ANC services in the 1(st) trimester significantly reduced the risk of preterm-AGA (p = 0.01). Significant risk factors for preterm-SGA included maternal age >30 years, being firstborn, and short maternal stature which appeared to carry a particularly strong risk (all p < 0.05).Conclusion: Over 30 % of newborns in this large urban and rural cohort of Tanzanian newborns were born preterm and/or SGA. Maternal nutrition plays a crucial role in influencing foetal growth and birth outcomes. The government of Indonesia provides centrally distributed food supplements (GFS) for undernourished pregnant mothers. The aim of the study was to test whether low‐cost, local food supplements (LFS) for undernourished pregnant mothers can improve maternal and birth outcomes compared with the centrally distributed GFS. This study was a two‐arm, randomised controlled trial design. The baseline data were collected at enrolment. We enrolled 60 pregnant mothers from Demak District, Central Java Province, Indonesia with mid‐upper arm circumference (MUAC) <23.5 cm who were assigned into two groups. The intervention group received LFS and multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS). The control group received the GFS and iron and folic acid supplements (IFA). LFS was a balanced energy protein food supplement made from peanuts, beans and fish. The effectiveness of these two interventions was assessed using logistic and linear regression. At baseline, the two groups had similar characteristics. After 60 days of treatment, compliance with the food and micronutrient supplements in the LFS group was 78.1% and 62.6% compared to 29.1% and 12.8% in the GFS group. After adjusting for baseline and the main covariates, mothers in the LFS group were more likely to increase MUAC (mean difference 0.60cm; 95% CI 0.27, 0.92) and to increase gestational weight (mean difference 1.02 kg; 95% CI 0.08, 1.97) than were mothers in the GFS group. For birth outcomes, the LFS group had a reduction in the risk of birthweight <3000 g (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.15; 95% CI 0.02, 0.98), caesarean delivery (AOR 0.11; 95% CI 0.02, 0.60) and short birth length (AOR 0.07; 95% CI 0.01, 0.93) compared with the GFS group. Local foods and MMS supplementation can improve maternal and birth outcomes. Abstract: Background: Despite growing evidence that early life experiences and exposures can impact child development, there is limited research on how prenatal and early life nutrition and early life parenting practices predict specific domains of child development in resource‐limited settings. This study examines the association between prenatal factors, birth outcomes, and early life characteristics with motor, cognitive/language, and socioemotional development in Tanzania. Methods: We assessed motor, cognitive/language, and socioemotional development among a cohort of 198 children aged 20–39 months in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, whose mothers were previously enrolled in a randomized, placebo‐controlled trial of prenatal vitamin A and zinc supplementation. Linear regression models were used to assess standardized mean differences in child development scores for randomized prenatal regimen and pregnancy, delivery, and early childhood factors. Results: Children born to mothers randomized to prenatal vitamin A had significantly lower reported motor scores in minimally adjusted and multivariate analyses, −0.29 SD, 95% CI [−0.54, −0.04], p = 0.03, as compared with children whose mothers did not receive vitamin A. There was no significant effect of randomized prenatal zinc on any development domain. Greater caregiver–child stimulation was associated with 0.38 SD, 95% CI [0.14, 0.63], p < 0.01, better cognitive/language scores, whereas children who experienced both verbal and physical punishment had 0.29 SD, 95% CI [−0.52, −0.05], p = 0.02, lower scores in socioemotional development. Maternal completion of primary school was associated with higher reported motor and cognitive/language development. Further, children of mothers who were <155 cm tall had lower cognitive and language scores. Conclusion: Prenatal vitamin A supplements in a setting with low levels of vitamin A deficiency may not provide child development benefits. However, integrated environmental, educational, parenting, and stimulation interventions may have large positive effects across child development domains in resource‐limited settings. ABSTRACT Objective This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of universal, selective, and indicated eating disorder prevention. Method A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Collaboration Library databases to January 2016. Studies were included if they were randomized, controlled trials (RCT) and tested an eating disorder prevention program. We retrieved 13 RCTs of universal prevention ( N = 3,989 participants, 55% female, M age = 13.0 years), 85 RCTs of selective prevention ( N = 11,949 participants, 99% female, M age = 17.6 years), and 8 RCTs of indicated prevention ( N = 510 participants, 100% female, M age = 20.1 years). Meta-analysis was performed with selective prevention trials. As there were a limited number of universal and indicated trials, narrative synthesis was conducted. Results Media literacy had the most support for universal prevention. Most universal approaches showed significant modest effects on risk factors. Dissonance-based was the best supported approach for selective prevention. Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), a healthy weight program, media literacy, and psychoeducation, were also effective for selective prevention and effects were maintained at follow-up. CBT was supported for indicated prevention and effects were maintained at follow-up. Discussion The modest effects for universal prevention were likely due to floor effects. The evidence for selective prevention suggests that empirically supported approaches should be disseminated on a wider basis. Our findings suggest CBT should be offered for indicated populations. Overall, results suggest efficacy of several prevention programs for reducing risk for eating disorders, and that wider dissemination is required. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background: A large volume of literature has shown negative associations between stunting and child development; however, there is limited evidence for associations with milder forms of linear growth faltering and determinants of malnutrition in developing countries.Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the association between anthropometric growth indicators across their distribution and determinants of malnutrition with development of Tanzanian children.Methods: We used the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III to assess a cohort of 1036 Tanzanian children between 18 and 36 mo of age who were previously enrolled in a neonatal vitamin A trial. Linear regression models were used to assess standardized mean differences in child development for anthropometry z scores, along with pregnancy, delivery, and early childhood factors.Results: Height-for-age z score (HAZ) was linearly associated with cognitive, communication, and motor development z scores across the observed range in this population (all P values for linear relation < 0.05). Each unit increase in HAZ was associated with +0.09 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.13), +0.10 (95% CI: 0.07, 0.14), and +0.13 (95% CI: 0.09, 0.16) higher cognitive, communication, and motor development z scores, respectively. The relation of weight-for-height z score (WHZ) was nonlinear with only wasted children (WHZ <-2) experiencing deficits (P values for nonlinear relation < 0.05). Wasted children had -0.63 (95% CI: -0.97, -0.29), -0.32 (95% CI: -0.64, 0.01), and -0.54 (95% CI: -0.86, -0.23) z score deficits in cognitive, communication, and motor development z scores, respectively, relative to nonwasted children. Maternal stature and flush toilet use were associated with higher cognitive and motor z scores, whereas being born small for gestational age (SGA) was associated with a -0.16 (95% CI: -0.30, -0.01) z score deficit in cognition.Conclusions: Mild to severe chronic malnutrition was associated with increasing developmental deficits in Tanzanian children, whereas only wasted children exhibited developmental delays during acute malnutrition. Interventions to reduce SGA, improve sanitation, and increase maternal stature may have positive effects on child development. Imidazolium acetate ionic liquids (ILs) have been utilized as promising solvents in many applications that involve varying water content and temperature. These experimental variables affect the anion-cation intermolecular interactions, which in turn influence the performance of the ILs in these applications. This paper shows Raman spectroscopy can be used as an operando method to measure water content in IL solvents when simultaneous temperature changes may occur. The Raman spectra of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ILs (alkyl chain length n = 2, 4, 6, 8) with varying water content (from 0.028 to 0.899 water mole fraction) and temperature (from 78.1 K to 423.1 K) were measured. Increasing the water content or decreasing the temperature of the tested ILs weakens the anion-cation intermolecular interactions. The water content of these ILs can be quantified even in conditions when the temperature is changing using Raman spectroscopy combined with multivariate regression analysis, including principal component regression (PCR), partial-least-squares regression (PLSR), and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANN model combined with partial-least-squares (PLS) achieved the highest prediction accuracy of water content in ILs at varying temperatures (RMSECV = 0.017, R2 CV = 99.1%, RMSEP = 0.019, R2 P = 98.8%, RPD = 8.93). Raman spectroscopy provides a potential fast non-destructive operando method to monitor the water content of ILs even in applications when the temperature may be simultaneously altered; this information can lead to the optimized use of these ILs in many applications.
