An improved understanding of the Russian revolutionary period is aimed for by examining the failure of the political opposition to the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution. Based on a study of the Komuch government in Samara and the Provisional Siberian Government in Omsk, as well as the Ufa State Conference in 1918, the fragmentation of the opposition forces in Russia after 1917 and the tenuousness of the compromise that was arrived at at Ufa were revealed. The demise of the opposition force signalled the loss for a democratic alternative to Bolshevik rule in the east.
