A deep metal grating enables quasi-phase-matched simultaneous excitation of two counterpropagating surface plasmon modes by means of its +1st and -2nd diffraction orders. The resulting angular reflection spectra of the scattered -1st and zeroth orders exhibit three interleaved zeros and maxima in a range centered around the Littrow angle. The spectra differ thoroughly from the usual reflection dip resulting from single-order plasmon coupling that produces strong absorption. The zeroth and -1st orders exhibit two crossing angles enabling high-sensitivity common-mode detection schemes designed to reject variations in source power and environmental noise. The proof of concept and experimental assessment of this new surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing scheme are demonstrated by monitoring gases in a pressure-controlled chamber. A limit of detection (LOD) of 2 × 10 -7 refractive index unit (RIU) was achieved.

Surface plasmon resonance sensors have been widely used in various fields for label-free and real-time detection of biochemical species due to their high sensitivity to the refractive index change of the surrounding environment. The common practices to achieve the improvement of sensitivity are to adjust the size and morphology of the sensor structure. This strategy is tedious and, to some extent, limits the applications of surface plasmon resonance sensors. Instead, the effect of the incident angle of excited light on the sensitivity of a hexagonal Au nanohole array sensor with a period of 630 nm and a hole diameter of 320 nm is theoretically investigated in this work. By exploring the peak shift of reflectance spectra of the sensor when facing a refractive index change in (1) the bulk environment and (2) the surface environment adjacent to the sensor, we can obtain the bulk sensitivity and surface sensitivity. The results show that the bulk sensitivity and surface sensitivity of the Au nanohole array sensor can be improved by 80% and 150%, respectively, by simply increasing the incident angle from 0° to 40°. The two sensitivities both remain nearly unchanged when the incident angle further changes from 40° to 50°. This work provides new understanding of the performance improvement and advanced sensing applications of surface plasmon resonance sensors.

Most label-free techniques rely on measuring refractive index or mass change on the sensor surface. Thus, it is challenging for them to measure small molecules or enzymatic processes that only induce a minor mass change on the analyte molecules. Here, we have developed a technique by combining Surface Plasmon Resonance sensing with an Oscillating Biomolecule Layer approach (SPR-OBL) to enhance the sensitivity of traditional SPR. In addition to the inherent mass sensitivity, SPR-OBL is also sensitive to the charge and conformational change of the analyte; hence it overcomes the mass limit and is able to detect small molecules. We show that the multimetric SPR-OBL measurement allows for sensing any changes regarding mass, charge, and conformation, which expands the detection capability of SPR.

Here, we experimentally demonstrate a wedged fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor enabling high-sensitivity temperature detection. The sensing probe has a geometry with two asymmetrical bevels, with one inclined surface coated with an optically thin film supporting propagating plasmons and the other coated with a reflecting metal film. The angle of incident light can be readily tuned through modifying the beveled angles of the fiber tip, which has a remarkable impact on the refractive index sensitivity of SPR sensors. As a result, we measure a high refractive index sensitivity as large as 8161 nm/RIU in a wide refractive index range of 1.333-1.404 for the optimized sensor. Furthermore, we carry out a temperature-sensitivity measurement by packaging the SPR probe into a capillary filled with n-butanol. This showed a temperature sensitivity reaching up to -3.35 nm/°C in a wide temperature range of 20 °C-100 °C. These experimental results are well in agreement with those obtained from simulations, thus suggesting that our work may be of significance in designing reflective fiber optic SPR sensing probes with modified geometries.

Herein a gold nanosphere (AuNS)-coated wavelength-mode localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) fiber sensor was fabricated by a simple and time-saving electrostatic self-assembly method using poly(allylamine hydrochloride). Based on the localized enhanced coupling effect between AuNSs, the LSPR spectrums of the AuNS monolayer with good dispersity and high density exhibited a favourable capability for refractive index (RI) measurement. Based on the results obtained from the optimization for AuNS distribution, sensing length, and RI range, the best RI sensitivity of the fiber modified by 100 nm AuNS reached up to about 2975 nm/RIU, with the surrounding RI range from 1.3322 to 1.3664. Using an 80 nm AuNS-modified fiber sensor, the RI sensitivity of 3953 nm/RIU was achieved, with the RI range increased from 1.3744 to 1.3911. The effect of sensing length to RI sensitivity was proven to be negligible. Furthermore, the linear relationship between the RI sensitivity and plasma resonance frequency of the bulk metal, which was dependent on the interparticle plasmon coupling effect, was quantified. Additionally, the resonance peak was tuned from 539.18 nm to 820.48 nm by different sizes of AuNSs-coated fiber sensors at a RI of 1.3322, which means the spectrum was extended from VIS to NIR. It has enormous potential in hypersensitive biochemistry detection at VIS and NIR ranges.

A surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an excitation resulting from the coupling of light to a surface charge oscillation at a metal-dielectric interface. The excitation and detection of SPPs is foundational to the operating mechanism of a number of important technologies, most of which require SPP excitation via direct reflectance, commonly achieved via Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) using the Kretschmann configuration. As a result, the accessible modes are fundamentally high-loss "leaky modes," presenting a critical performance barrier. Recently, our group provided the first demonstration of "forbidden," or guided-wave plasmon polariton modes (GW-PPMs), collective modes of a MIM structure with oscillatory electric field amplitude in the central insulator layer with up to an order of magnitude larger propagation lengths than those of traditional SPPs. However, in that work, GW-PPMs were accessed by indirect reflectance using Otto configuration ATR, making them of limited applied relevance. In this paper, we demonstrate a technique for direct reflectance excitation and detection of GW-PPMs. Specifically, we replace the air gap used in traditional Otto ATR with a low refractive index polymer coupling layer, mirroring a technique previously demonstrated to access Long-Range Surface Plasmon Polariton modes. We fit experimental ATR data using a robust theoretical model to confirm the character of the modes, as well as to explore the potential of this approach to enable advantageous propagation lengths. The ability to excite GW-PPMs using a device configuration that does not require an air gap could potentially enable transformative performance enhancements in a number of critical technologies., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Surface plasmon coupled emission (SPCE) is the directional emission of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) through the reverse channels of focused surface plasmon excitation to the far field, which has shown significant possibilities in bioanalysis, medical diagnosis, and so on. We carried out a theoretical study of SPCE to analyze its mechanisms and proposed a new structure to improve the emission intensity of SPCE. We proposed a method for refractive index sensing based on SPCE, consisting of a reverse Kretschmann (RK) or a Tamm structure for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The corresponding sensing sensitivity reaches 87.61 deg/RIU and 67.44 deg/RIU, respectively. Compared with that in the RK, the far-field radiation intensity of SPCE in the Tamm structure is enhanced by two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, compared with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing, SPCE sensing can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and excitation efficiency. Our structures enable refractive index sensing with a high SNR, high spatial resolution, and without the requirement of angular alignment using complex mechanics, which are suitable for practical applications such as quantitative biomolecular detection and medical diagnosis.

The fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is widely used in high-sensitivity refractive index detection, and there are few reports on SPR sensors used for strain measurement. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an S-type fiber strain sensor based on SPR. The simulation and testing results indicate that the smaller the vertical axis offset of S-type fiber is, the larger the incidence angle of SPR is, and the closer the working band of SPR is to the shorter wavelength direction. By electrofusion, we fabricated an S-type structure on the single-mode fiber, and by the S-type structure, the high-order cladding mode was excited. A 50 nm gold film was coated on the surface of the fiber cladding behind the S-type structure. The evanescent field of the cladding mode contacted the gold film to produce SPR, and the strain can change the vertical axis offset of the S-type fiber and further change the incidence angle of SPR; hence an S-type fiber strain sensor based on SPR was realized. When the refractive index of the ambient medium is 1.345 RIU, the vertical axis offset and length of the S-shaped structure are 87 and 501 µm, respectively, the resonance wavelength of the fiber SPR strain sensor changes from 648.06 to 631.77 nm with a strain detection range of 0-1200µε, and its sensitivity is -14.38 p m /µε. The proposed sensor provides a new solution for the strain measurement of the fiber SPR sensor, which is expected to be used in the fields of engineering, health monitoring, and early warning.

In this work, a simple side-polish plastic optical fiber (POF)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is proposed and demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and liquid level. The effects of side-polish depths on the sensing performance were studied. The experimental results show that the SPR peak wavelength will be changed as the RI changes, and the SPR peak intensity will be changed with the liquid level variation. By monitoring the changes in peak wavelength and intensity, the RI and liquid level can be detected simultaneously. Experimental results show that an RI sensitivity of 2008.58 nm/RIU can be reached at an RI of 1.39. This sensor has the advantages of simple structure and low cost, which has a good prospect in the field of biochemical sensing.

This paper proposes a simple, high-efficiency refractive index (RI) sensor, with a structure based on the planar lightwave circuit (PLC) probe type. The optical sensor has a 1 × 2 splitter structure with reference and sensing channels, each consisting of a U-shaped waveguide structure that is configured by connecting C bends. This design allows for the sensor device to have a probe structure wherein the surface interconnected with activity devices (i.e., an optical source and optical detector) is placed on one side. The reference channel is bent with a minimum optical loss, and the sensing channel has a bent structure, involving a C-bend waveguide with a maximum loss. The C-bend waveguide with a maximum loss is conformally aligned to have a trench structure with the same bending radius, designed to selectively expose the sidewall of the core layer. The local index contrast varies depending on the material in contact with the trench, resulting in a change in the optical output power of the waveguide. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor was 0 and 2070 μW/refractive index unit (RIU) for the reference and sensing channels, respectively, as the RI changed from 1.385 to 1.445 at a 1550 nm wavelength. These results suggest that the proposed structure enables efficient RI measurement through the use of a simple dip-type method.

Plasmonic sensors are promising for ultrasensitive chemical and biological analysis. Gold nanoplates (Au NPLs) show unique geometrical structures with high ratios of surface to bulk atoms, which display fascinating plasmonic properties but require optimization. This study presented a systematic investigation of the influence of different parameters (shape, aspect ratio, and resonance mode) on localized surface plasmon resonance properties, refractive index (RI, n ) sensitivities, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement ability of different types of Au NPLs through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. As a proof of concept, triangular, circular, and hexagonal Au NPLs with varying aspect ratios were fabricated via a three-step seed-mediated growth method by the experiment. Both FDTD-simulated and measured experimental results confirm that the RI sensitivities increase with the aspect ratio. Furthermore, choosing a lower order resonance mode of Au NPLs benefits higher RI sensitivities. The SERS enhancement abilities of Au NPLs also predicted to be highly dependent on the shape and aspect ratio. The triangular Au NPLs showed the highest SERS enhancement ability, while it drastically decreased for circular Au NPLs after the rounding process. The SERS enhancement ability gradually became more intense as the hexagonal Au NPLs overgrown on circular Au NPLs with increasing volumes of HAuCl 4 solution. The results are expected to help develop effective biosensors.

Multiple parameters need to be monitored to analyze the kinetics of biological progresses. Surface plasmon polariton resonance sensors offer a non-invasive approach to continuously detect the local change of refractive index of molecules with high sensitivity. However, the fabrication of miniaturized, compact, and low-cost sensors is still challenging. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a grating-coupled SPR sensor platform featuring dual mode operation for simultaneous sensing of pressure and refractive index, which can be fabricated using a highly-efficient low-cost method, allowing large-scale production. Both sensing functionalities are realized by optical means via monitoring the spectral positions of a surface plasmon polariton mode (for refractive index sensing) and Fabry-Perot or metal-insulator-metal modes (for pressure sensing), which are supported by the structure. Simultaneous measurement of refractive index with the sensitivity of 494 nm/RIU and pressure was demonstrated experimentally. The proposed platform is promising for biomonitoring that requires both high refractive index sensitivity and local pressure detection.

Quantification of molecular interactions on a surface is typically achieved via label-free techniques such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The sensitivity of SPR originates from the characteristic that the SPR angle is sensitive to the surface refractive index change. Analogously, in another interfacial optical phenomenon, total internal reflection, the critical angle is also refractive index dependent. Therefore, surface refractive index change can also be quantified by measuring the reflectivity near the critical angle. Based on this concept, we develop a method called critical angle reflection (CAR) imaging to quantify molecular interactions on glass surface. CAR imaging can be performed on SPR imaging setups. Through a side-by-side comparison, we show that CAR is capable of most molecular interaction measurements that SPR performs, including proteins, nucleic acids and cell-based detections. In addition, we show that CAR can detect small molecule bindings and intracellular signals beyond SPR sensing range. CAR exhibits several distinct characteristics, including tunable sensitivity and dynamic range, deeper vertical sensing range, fluorescence compatibility, broader wavelength and polarization of light selection, and glass surface chemistry. We anticipate CAR can expand SPR's capability in small molecule detection, whole cell-based detection, simultaneous fluorescence imaging, and broader conjugation chemistry.

A simple dual-core D-shaped plasmonic refractive index (RI) sensor with an open-arch channel is introduced in this paper. A thin plasmonic gold layer is inserted on the slotted portion, which makes the sensor cost effective. By introducing a ring in the flat surface of the D-shaped structure, the coupling effect is increased, which enhances sensor performance. The commonly used finite element method is applied to characterize sensor performance. Numerical investigation under the wavelength interrogation method shows maximum spectral sensitivities of 16,000 nm/RIU and 17,000 nm/RIU along with corresponding resolutions of 6.25×10 -6 R I U and 5.88×10 -6 R I U for x and y polarizations, respectively. In tandem with this, maximum amplitude sensitivities governed by the amplitude interrogation method are calculated at about 2,603.7000 R I U -1 and 3,432.1929 R I U -1 for x and y polarizations, respectively. The proposed sensor exhibits high figures of merit of 320 R I U -1 and 283.33 R I U -1 for x and y polarizations, respectively, in the RI detection range of 1.33 to 1.44. Moreover, the impact on sensitivity with the overall sensor behavior is analyzed by altering geometrical parameters such as pitch, air hole diameter, and gold layer thickness. So, with an eye toward sensor performance and economic viability, this sensor is assignable to bio-sensing applications.

Plasmonic sensors are promising for ultrasensitive chemical and biological analysis. However, there are increasing experimental findings that cannot be well addressed by theoretical calculations, including the nonlinear dependence of the plasmonic peak wavelength on the refractive index (RI) and the ultrahigh sensitivity beyond the theoretical limit. The gap between experiments and theoretical calculations is that the bulk RI (BRI) used for calculation could be different from the interfacial RI (IRI) determining the electromagnetic response as a result of the interaction of molecules with the surface. But there is still no method to determine the IRI. Herein, we quantitatively determine the IRI by disentangling the surface RI (SRI) from the BRI. The obtained IRI can be directly applied in theoretical calculations to reliably reflect the experimental response and rigorously guide the design of plasmonic sensors. Moreover, it can be a fundamental dimensionless number to describe the light-matter interaction at the interface.

Background: Direct bio-monitoring essentially involves optical means since photon has insignificant effects over biomolecules. Over the years, laser induced surface Plasmon resonance method with various modifications as well as versatile localized Plasmon excited by incoherent light have facilitated in recording many nanobiological activities. Yet, monitoring interactions of small molecules including drugs requires signal amplification and improvement on signal-to-noise ratio., Objectives: This paper focused on how the refractive index based nanobio-sensoring gold platform can produce more efficient, adaptable and more practical detection techniques to observe molecular interactions at high degree of sensitivity. It discusses surface chemistry approach, optimisation of the refractive index of gold platform and manipulation of gold geometry augmenting signal quality., Methods: In a normal-incidence reflectivity, r0 can be calculated using the Fresnel equation. Particularly at λ = 470 nm the ratio of r / r0 showed significant amplitude reduction mainly stemmed from the imaginary part of the Au refractive index. Hence, the fraction of reduction, Δr = 1 - r / r0. Experimentally, in a common reference frame reflectivity of a bare gold surface, R0 is compared with the reflectivity of gold surface in the presence of biolayer, R. The reduction rate (%) of reflectivity, ΔR = 1 - R / R0 is denoted as the AR signal. The method therefore enables quantitative measurement of the surface-bound protein by converting ΔR to the thickness, d, and subsequently the protein mass. We discussed four strategies to improve the AR signal by changing the effective refractive index of the biosensing platform. They are; a) Thickness optimisation of Au thin layer, b) Au / Ag bimetallic layer, c) composing alloy or Au composite, and d) Au thinlayer with nano or micro holes., Results: As the result we successfully 'move' the refractive index, ε of the AR platform (gold only) to ε = -0.948 + 3.455i, a higher sensitivity platform. This was done by composing Au-Ag2O composite with ratio = 1:1. The results were compared to the potential sensitivity improvement of the AR substrate using other that could be done by further tailoring the ε advanced method., Conclusion: We suggested four strategies in order to realize this purpose. The formation of ultralong peptide crystalline nanobelts using a solvothermal approach from a di-phenylalanine gel within 10 min, where the self-assembly process is accelerated by several orders of magnitude compared with the month-long glutaraldehyde induction method previously reported, has been demonstrated. The solvothermal treatment can facilitate the phase separation of di-phenylalanine gels while speeding up the kinetics of the intramolecular cyclization reaction and concomitant crystallization. Moreover, the modulation effect of formaldehyde as an additive is revealed, and that a small amount of formaldehyde leads to thicker crystalline platelets capable of curved optical waveguiding that can potentially be applied in advanced bio-optical and optoelectronic devices, a rare feat with peptide-based crystals., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The ideal material for nanophotonic applications will have a large refractive index at optical frequencies, respond to both the electric and magnetic fields of light, support large optical chirality and anisotropy, confine and guide light at the nanoscale, and be able to modify the phase and amplitude of incoming radiation in a fraction of a wavelength. Artificial electromagnetic media, or metamaterials, based on metallic or polar dielectric nanostructures can provide many of these properties by coupling light to free electrons (plasmons) or phonons (phonon polaritons), respectively, but at the inevitable cost of significant energy dissipation and reduced device efficiency. Recently, however, there has been a shift in the approach to nanophotonics. Low-loss electromagnetic responses covering all four quadrants of possible permittivities and permeabilities have been achieved using completely transparent and high-refractive-index dielectric building blocks. Moreover, an emerging class of all-dielectric metamaterials consisting of anisotropic crystals has been shown to support large refractive index contrast between orthogonal polarizations of light. These advances have revived the exciting prospect of integrating exotic electromagnetic effects in practical photonic devices, to achieve, for example, ultrathin and efficient optical elements, and realize the long-standing goal of subdiffraction confinement and guiding of light without metals. In this Review, we present a broad outline of the whole range of electromagnetic effects observed using all-dielectric metamaterials: high-refractive-index nanoresonators, metasurfaces, zero-index metamaterials and anisotropic metamaterials. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future goals for the field at the intersection with quantum, thermal and silicon photonics, as well as biomimetic metasurfaces.

Spectral-based methods are often used for label-free biosensing. However, practical implementations with plasmonic nanostructures suffer from a broad line width caused by strong radiative and nonradiative losses, and the sensing performance characterized by figure of merit is poor for these spectral-based methods. This study provides a polarization state-based method using plasmonic nanostructures to improve the sensing performance. Instead of the intensity spectrum, the polarization state of the transmitted field is monitored to analyze variations of the surrounding medium. The polarization state of incidence is strongly modified due to the excitation of surface plasmons, and the ellipticity of the transmitted field changes dramatically around plasmon resonances. Sharp resonances with line widths down to sub-nanometer are achieved by plotting the spectra of the reciprocal of ellipticity. Therefore, the sensing performance can be significantly improved, and a theoretical value of the figure of merit exceeding 1700 is achieved by using the polarization state-based sensing approach.

Rayleigh anomalies (RAs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on subwavelength metallic gratings play pivotal roles in many interesting phenomena such as extraordinary optical transmission. In this work, we present a theoretical analysis of the effect of finite metallic grating size on RA-SPP resonances based on the combination of rigorous coupled wave analysis and finite aperture diffraction. One-dimensional arrays of gold subwavelength gratings with different device sizes were fabricated and the optical transmission spectra were measured. As the grating size shrinks, the broadening of the RA-SPP resonances is predicted by the theoretical model. For the first order RA-SPP resonances, the results from this model are in good agreement with the spectra measured from the fabricated plasmonic gratings.

In this paper seven salts of pyridinium-substituted tetraphenylethylene with different anions are reported. They show typical aggregation-induced emission. Crystal structures of three of the salts with (CF(3)SO(2))(2) N(-), CF(3) SO(3)(-), and SbF(6)(-) as the respective counter anions, are determined. The emission behavior of their amorphous and crystalline solids is investigated. Both amorphous and crystalline solids, except for the one with I(-), are highly emissive. Certain amorphous solids are red-emissive with almost the same quantum yields and fluorescence life-times. However, some crystalline solids are found to show different emission colors varying from green to yellow. Thus, their emission colors can be tuned by the counter anions. Furthermore, certain crystalline solids are highly emissive compared to the respective amorphous solids. Such solid-state emission behavior of these pyridinium-substituted tetraphenylethylene salts is interpreted on the basis of their crystal structures. We demonstrate that Pd nanospheres exhibit much higher susceptibility of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak to medium refractive index changes than commonly used plasmonic sensing materials such as Au and Ag. The susceptibility of spherical Au nanoparticle-core/Pd-shell nanospheres (Au/PdNSs, ca. 73 nm in diameter) was found to be 4.9 and 2.5 times higher, respectively, than those of Au (AuNSs) and Ag nanospheres (AgNSs) having similar diameters. The experimental finding was theoretically substantiated using the Mie exact solution. We also showed from a quasi-static (QS) approximation framework that the high susceptibility of Pd LSPR originates from the smaller dispersion of the real part of its dielectric function than those of Au and Ag LSPR around the resonant wavelength. We conclude that the Pd nanoparticle is a promising candidate of "the third plasmonic sensing material" following Au and Ag to be used in ultrahigh-sensitive LSPR sensors.

Characteristics of polarization insensitivity of carrier-induced refractive index change of 1.55 μm tensile-strained multiple quantum well (MQW) are theoretically investigated. A comprehensive MQW model is proposed to effectively extend the application range of previous models. The model considers the temperature variation as well as the nonuniform distribution of injected carrier in MQW. Tensile-strained MQW is expected to achieve polarization insensitivity of carrier-induced refractive index change over a wide wavelength range as temperature varies from 0°C to 40°C, while the magnitude of refractive index change keeps a large value (more than 3 × 10 -3 ). And that the polarization insensitivity of refractive index change can maintain for a wide range of carrier concentration. Multiple quantum well with different material and structure parameters is anticipated to have the similar polarization insensitivity of refractive index change, which shows the design flexibility.

The control of coherent phenomena in graphene structures is proposed. Specifically, plasmon induced transparency (PIT) effect is investigated in a kind of simple graphene structures - graphene ribbon pairs. The transparency effect are understood by the mode coupling between dipolar and quadrupole plasmons modes in graphene ribbons. By using bias voltage tuning or geometry parameters changing, the PIT effect can be effectively controlled, which is based on the frequency tuning of dipolar or quadrupole modes in ribbons. These properties make these structures possess applications in two-dimensional plasmonics devices in mid-infrared range. In addition, the tuning of PIT in graphene ribbon pairs opens an avenue for active coherent control in plasmonics.

In this paper we theoretically study how structural disorder in coupled semiconductor heterostructures influences single-particle scattering events that would otherwise be forbidden by symmetry. We extend the model of Savona (2007 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 19 295208) to describe Rayleigh scattering in coupled planar microcavity structures, and find that effective filter theories can be ruled out.

The light transmission spectrum has been calculated for a "cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal" structure. It is shown that the system can have an isolated waveguide surface mode with characteristics efficiently controllable by external fields acting on the cholesteric. The degree of localization of surface modes and the transmission coefficients have been found to differ considerably for the light of different polarizations.

The transverse magnetic (TM) polarized hybrid modes formed as a consequence of coupling between Tamm plasmon polariton (TM-TPP) mode and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode exhibit interesting dispersive features for realizing a highly sensitive and accurate surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. We found that the TM-TPP modes, formed at the interface of distributed Bragg reflector and metal, are strongly dispersive as compared to SPP modes at optical frequencies. This causes an appreciably narrow interaction bandwidth between TM-TPP and SPP modes, which leads to highly accurate sensing. In addition, appropriate tailoring of dispersion characteristics of TM-TPP as well as SPP modes could ensure high sensitivity of a novel SPR platform. By suitably designing the Au/TiO₂/SiO₂-based geometry, we propose a TM-TPP/SPP hybrid-mode sensor and achieve a sensitivity ≥900  nm/RIU with high detection accuracy (≥30  μm⁻¹) for analyte refractive indices varying between 1.330 and 1.345 in 600-700 nm wavelength range. The possibility to achieve desired dispersive behavior in any spectral band makes the sensing configuration an extremely attractive candidate to design sensors depending on the availability of optical sources.

We study the polarization properties of quantum dot (QD) emission coupled with the fundamental cavity modes. A rotation of polarization axis and a change of polarization degree are observed as the coupling is varied. To explain this observation, we derive an analytical model considering the polarization misalignment between QD dipole and cavity mode field. Our model also provides a new approach to extract the anisotropic Purcell factors by analyzing the polarization of detected quantum dot emission coupled to the cavity mode, which paves the way to develop high-efficiency polarized single photon sources.

The PyTMatrix package was designed with the objective of providing a simple, extensible interface to T-Matrix electromagnetic scattering calculations performed using an extensively validated numerical core. The interface, implemented in the Python programming language, facilitates automation of the calculations and further analysis of the results through direct integration of both the inputs and the outputs of the calculations to numerical analysis software. This article describes the architecture and design of the package, illustrating how the concepts in the physics of electromagnetic scattering are mapped into data and code models in the computer software. The resulting capabilities and their consequences for the usability and performance of the package are explored.

We investigate the emergence of nonlocal effects in plasmonic nanostructures through electron-energy loss spectroscopy. To theoretically describe the spatial dispersion in the metal permittivity, we develop a full three-dimensional nonlocal hydrodynamic solution of Maxwell's equations in frequency domain that implements the electron beam as a line current source. We use our numerical approach to perform an exhaustive analysis of the impact of nonlocality in the plasmonic response of single triangular prisms and connected bowtie dimers. Our results demonstrate the complexity of the interplay between nonlocal and geometric effects taking place in these structures. We show the different sensitivities to both effects of the various plasmonic modes supported by these systems. Finally, we present an experimental electron-energy loss study on gold nanoprisms connected by bridges as narrow as 1.6 nm. The comparison with our theoretical predictions enables us to reveal in a phenomenological fashion the enhancement of absorption damping that occurs in these atomistic junctions due to quantum confinement and grain boundary electron scattering.

We demonstrate that interference of absorption pathways can be used to control resonant coupling of light to guided modes in a manner analogous to quantum coherent control or electronically induced transparency. We illustrate the control of resonant coupling that interference affords using a plasmonic test system where tuning the phase of a grating is sufficient to vary the transfer of energy into the surface plasmon polariton by a factor of over 10(6). We show that such a structure could function as a one-way coupler, and present a simple explanation for the underlying physics.

We investigate electromagnetic wave propagation in multilayered metal-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs). We demonstrate that high-k propagating waves in HMMs are volume plasmon polaritons. The volume plasmon polariton band is formed by coupling of short-range surface plasmon polariton excitations in the individual metal layers.

We present a new approach to subwavelength optical confinement, based on hyperbolic media in planar Fabry-Perot geometry. Unlike higher-order resonance modes in indefinite metamaterial cavities, the predicted resonance corresponds to 0th-order mode and can be observed in planar systems. Our approach combines subwavelength light confinement with strong radiative coupling, enabling a practical planar design of nanolasers and subwavelength waveguides.

Plasmon induced transparency (PIT) could be realized in metamaterials via interference between different resonance modes. Within the sharp transparency window, the high dispersion of the medium may lead to remarkable slow light phenomena and an enhanced nonlinear effect. However, the transparency mode is normally localized in a narrow frequency band, which thus restricts many of its applications. Here we present the simulation, implementation, and measurement of a broadband PIT metamaterial functioning in the terahertz regime. By integrating four U-shape resonators around a central bar resonator, a broad transparency window across a frequency range greater than 0.40 THz is obtained, with a central resonance frequency located at 1.01 THz. Such PIT metamaterials are promising candidates for designing slow light devices, highly sensitive sensors, and nonlinear elements operating over a broad frequency range.

Two mechanisms that can make frequency conversion based on nonlinear mixing dependent on the phase of the input signal are identified. A novel phase-to-polarization converter that converts the orthogonal phase components of an input signal to two orthogonally polarized outputs is proposed. The operation of this scheme and a previously reported scheme at an increased symbol rate are simulated with semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) as the nonlinear devices. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of SOAs for nonlinear mixing over a wide range of wavelengths and difference frequencies and confirm the accuracy of the numerical model.

Characterizing intense, focused x-ray free electron laser (FEL) pulses is crucial for their use in diffractive imaging. We describe how the distribution of average phase tilts and intensities on hard x-ray pulses with peak intensities of 10(21) W/m(2) can be retrieved from an ensemble of diffraction patterns produced by 70 nm-radius polystyrene spheres, in a manner that mimics wavefront sensors. Besides showing that an adaptive geometric correction may be necessary for diffraction data from randomly injected sample sources, our paper demonstrates the possibility of collecting statistics on structured pulses using only the diffraction patterns they generate and highlights the imperative to study its impact on single-particle diffractive imaging.

By coating a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) structure with a high refractive index thin-film it is possible to obtain a transition of modes for specific combinations of thin-film thickness, thin-film refractive index and surrounding medium refractive index, which permits to develop devices with a high sensitivity to specific parameters. In order to gain a better knowledge of the phenomenon the experimental results are corroborated numerically with the Transfer-Matrix-Method. The influence of losses in the thin-film has also been studied. The results obtained prove that a thin-film coated SMS structure is a simple and cost-effective platform for development of sensors and optical filters.

An approach to compute the polarizability tensor of magnetic nanoparticles having general ellipsoidal shape is presented. We find a surprisingly excellent quantitative agreement between calculated and experimental magneto-optical spectra measured in the polar Kerr configuration from nickel nanodisks of large size (exceeding 100 nm) with circular and elliptical shape. In spite of its approximations and simplicity, the formalism presented here captures the essential physics of the interplay between magneto-optical activity and the plasmonic resonance of the individual particle. The results highlight the key role of the dynamic depolarization effects to account for the magneto-optical properties of plasmonic nanostructures.

Axisymmetric radiating and scattering structures whose rotational invariance is broken by non-axisymmetric excitations present an important class of problems in electromagnetics. For such problems, a cylindrical wave decomposition formalism can be used to efficiently obtain numerical solutions to the full-wave frequency-domain problem. Often, the far-field, or Fraunhofer region is of particular interest in scattering cross-section and radiation pattern calculations; yet, it is usually impractical to compute full-wave solutions for this region. Here, we propose a generalization of the Stratton-Chu far-field integral adapted for 2.5D formalism. The integration over a closed, axially symmetric surface is analytically reduced to a line integral on a meridional plane. We benchmark this computational technique by comparing it with analytical Mie solutions for a plasmonic nanoparticle, and apply it to the design of a three-dimensional polarization-insensitive cloak.

We present an experimental observation of an oscillating Kerr cavity soliton, i.e., a time-periodic oscillating one-dimensional temporally localized structure excited in a driven nonlinear fiber cavity with a Kerr-type nonlinearity. More generally, these oscillations result from a Hopf bifurcation of a (spatially or temporally) localized state in the generic class of driven dissipative systems close to the 1 : 1 resonance tongue. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze dynamical instabilities of the one-dimensional cavity soliton, revealing oscillations and different chaotic states in previously unexplored regions of parameter space. As cavity solitons are closely related to Kerr frequency combs, we expect these dynamical regimes to be highly relevant for the field of microresonator-based frequency combs.

We demonstrate the generation of quantum-correlated photon pairs from a Si photonic-crystal coupled-resonator optical waveguide. A slow-light supermode realized by the collective resonance of high-Q and small-mode-volume photonic-crystal cavities successfully enhanced the efficiency of the spontaneous four-wave mixing process. The generation rate of photon pairs was improved by two orders of magnitude compared with that of a photonic-crystal line defect waveguide without a slow-light effect.

We theoretically propose and experimentally perform a novel dispersion tuning scheme to realize a tunable Fano resonance in a coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) structure coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We reveal that the profile of the Fano resonance in the resonator coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometers (RCMZI) is determined not only by the phase shift difference between the two arms of the RCMZI but also by the dispersion (group delay) of the CRIT structure. Furthermore, it is theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated that the slope and the asymmetry parameter (q) describing the Fano resonance spectral line shape of the RCMZI experience a sign reversal when the dispersion of the CRIT structure is tuned from abnormal dispersion (fast light) to normal dispersion (slow light). These theoretical and experimental results indicate that the reversible Fano resonance which holds significant implications for some attractive device applications such as highly sensitive biochemical sensors, ultrafast optical switches and routers can be realized by the dispersion tuning scheme in the RCMZI.

We observe and investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, electromagnetically-induced transparency experienced by evanescent fields arising due to total internal reflection from an interface of glass and hot rubidium vapor. This phenomenon manifests itself as a non-Lorentzian peak in the reflectivity spectrum, which features a sharp cusp with a sub-natural width of about 1 MHz. The width of the peak is independent of the thickness of the interaction region, which indicates that the main source of decoherence is likely due to collisions with the cell walls rather than diffusion of atoms. With the inclusion of a coherence-preserving wall coating, this system could be used as an ultra-compact frequency reference.

The construction, alignment, and performance of a setup for broadband wide-angle dispersion measurements, with emphasis on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements, are presented in comprehensive detail. In contrast with most SPR instruments working with a monochromatic source, this setup takes advantage of a broadband∕white light source and has full capability for automated angle vs. wavelength dispersion measurements for any arbitrary nanostructure array. A cylindrical prism is used rather than a triangular one in order to mitigate refraction induced effects and allow for such measurements. Although seemingly simple, this instrument requires use of many non-trivial methods in order to achieve proper alignment over all angles of incidence. Here we describe the alignment procedure for such a setup, the pitfalls introduced from the finite beam width incident onto the cylindrical prism, and deviations in the reflected∕transmitted beam resulting from the finite thickness of the sample substrate. We address every one of these issues and provide experimental evidences on the success of this instrument and the alignment procedure used.

We show that the interaction between localized surface plasmons sustained by a metallic nano-antenna and delocalized phonons lying at the surface of an heteropolar semiconductor can generate a new class of hybrid electromagnetic modes. These plasphonic modes are investigated using an analytical model completed by accurate Green dyadic numerical simulations. When surface plasmon and surface phonon frequencies match, the optical resonances exhibit a large Rabi splitting typical of strongly interacting two-level systems. Based on numerical simulations of the electric near-field maps, we investigate the nature of the plaphonic excitations. In particular, we point out a strong local field enhancement boosted by the phononic surface. This effect is interpreted in terms of light harvesting by the plasmonic antenna from the phononic surface. We thus introduce the concept of active phononic surfaces that may be exploited for far-infared optoelectronic devices and sensors.

In this work the design of Si / hybrid waveguides which contain a vertical infiltrated slot is studied. The case of slots infiltrated with a χ³ nonlinear material of relatively high refractive index (e.g. chalcogenide glasses) is specifically discussed. An optimized waveguide geometry with periodic refractive index modulation, a nonlinear figure of merit > 1 and minimum effective mode cross section is presented. Introducing a periodic refractive index variation along the waveguide allows the adjustment of the group velocity dispersion (GVD). Choosing the period accordingly, the phase matching condition for degenerate four wave mixing (GVD = 0) can be fulfilled at virtually any desired frequency and independently from the fixed optimized waveguide cross section.

Dimers of metal nanospheres are well-known for their characteristic anisotropic optical response. Here, we demonstrate in single-particle SERS experiments that individual gold trimers and 3D superstructures exhibit a polarization-independent SERS response. This optical behavior of single particle clusters provides constant SERS signals, independent of the mutual orientation of the incident laser polarization and the plasmonic nanostructure, which is desired or even required in many SERS applications.

We report direct observation of the 2D transverse near-field intensity and polarisation distribution of surface plasmon polaritons guided on metal nanowires. Quadrupolar modes are excited on an array of coupled nanowires arranged around the central glass core in a photonic crystal fibre, with lobes whose orientation depends on the polarisation state of the launched core light. The radial electric field is resolved using a polarization sensitive near-field probe in light-collection mode.

We demonstrate the near-field coupling and energy transfer between photoexcited dye molecules and guided modes in layers of strongly absorbing dielectrics. The dye molecules decay by exciting long-range guided modes (LRGMs) in a thin layer of chalcogenide glass. These modes can exist in spite of the very large absorption of the material forming the layer. The LRGMs are detected by coupling then out to free space radiation through a prism in the Krestschmann configuration. By calculating the dissipated power of a dipole, representing a dye molecule, in the vicinity of the absorbing thin film, we show that there is a large probability of decay exciting LRGMs. This probability can reach 35% for perpendicularly oriented dipoles. The demonstration of the excitation of LRGMs in thin films of absorbing dielectrics by near-field coupling of excited molecules opens the possibility to compensate for the losses in the propagation of these modes.

We have measured the angular distribution of light scattered off 2D plasmonic Al nanoparticle ensembles. We created these samples with disk-like nanoparticles, 175 and 500 nm in diameter, respectively, using hole-mask colloidal lithography and electron beam lithography. The nanoparticle arrangements in the samples display the short-range order (but no long-range order) characteristic for an ensemble formed by random sequential adsorption. As a consequence of this, the ensemble scattering patterns can be quantitatively well described by combining the single-particle scattering pattern with a static structure factor that carries information about the diffraction effects caused by the short-range order of the ensemble. We also performed sensing experiments in which we monitored changes in the angle-resolved scattering intensity for a fixed wavelength as a function of the thickness of an ultrathin SiO(2) coating covering the Al nanoparticles. The data show that the angle and strength of the main diffraction peak vary linearly with SiO(2) coating thickness in the range 1.5-4.5 nm and suggest that measurements of the scattering profile could be a competitive alternative to traditional transmission measurements in terms of sensitivity.
