3. Employee recognition programmes: An immanent critique.

- Abstract
In this article I present a critical reading of employee recognition programmes. I utilize an immanent approach, drawing on the same principles that it is claimed underpin such programmes, namely the desire of needful subjects for recognition in the form of self-respect and esteem, and an anticipation of the organizational relations that are themselves a prerequisite for such recognition. These principles are articulated through a reading of Axel Honneth's critical theory of intersubjective recognition as a necessary condition for what he refers to as fulfilled self-realization and social freedom. In doing so, I suggest that, rather than facilitating the conditions and benefits of intersubjective recognition, internal pathological tendencies towards reification, disrespect and compelled identification result in such programmes undermining the ontological conditions necessary for recognition to flourish, threatening both individual and organizational harm. The central axis of the article is the argument that History and Class Consciousness adopts from the Hegelian dialectics not only the category of totality but also the master–slave dialectic, although it never refers explicitly to the latter. Hence, in this article, we aim to detect the subtle influence that the Hegelian master–slave dialectic exerts on History and Class Consciousness and, more specifically, on the constitution of the Lukacsian concepts of reification, praxis, working class-bourgeoisie interaction, working-class self-consciousness, autonomous subject. Our approach to the Hegelian master–slave dialectic is mostly – but not only – based on its philosophical–anthropological interpretation by A. Kojeve. Kojeve’s interpretation, by attributing a crucial role to labour in the mastery–slavery dialectic, focuses on that aspect of the Hegelian dialectic which, in our estimation, was determining for HCC. In addition, our approach to the Hegelian master–slave dialectic is based on some occasional references Lukacs has to it in Young Hegel as well as on his interpretation latent in History and Class Consciousness.

For Jean Herbison, learning in her early 20th century childhood world was relatively uncomplicated and predictable. Life was shaped by unambiguous family, faith and settler colonial prescriptions about how children should behave and what they should become. Approaching the centenary of her birth, children today must navigate a very different society of 'unlimited can'; an achievement society that generates a debilitating compulsion to self-improve (Byung Chul-Han). In this Herbison lecture, I offer a personal reflection on the contemporary 'triangle' of education research, policy and practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. Viewed as a culturally and historically specific 'form of life' (Rahel Jaeggi), I ask whether, over the last thirty five years, this triangle may have unwittingly contributed to a collective failure to give adequate recognition to children's learning. Despite our best intentions, have we simply reified students and in doing so alienated them from learning in all its complexities and dimensions (Knud Illeris)? More than mere acknowledgement of 'the other', recognition theory highlights the importance of socially developed qualities such as confidence, respect and esteem (Axel Honneth) to each child's capacity to develop meaningful relationships to or 'resonance' with an ever accelerating and uncontrollable world (Hartmut Rosa) and the people and communities in it. In practical terms, then, what can we draw on that is already immanent in our research, policy and practice triangle to transform children's institutionalised learning? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research analyzes the reformulation of the reification category by critical theory. Based on the analyzes of the German philosopher Axel Honneth and the American philosopher Nancy Fraser, it is argued that Honneth was more successful in the task of updating the concept, while Fraser uses the idea of reification very close to that advocated by Honneth. The work reconstructs, initially, the perception of reification present in the philosophy of Georg Lukács. In the second moment, investigates the proposal of reformulation operated by Honneth. In the third moment, it works the conception of reifier behavior in Fraser's theory. In the fourth step, it analyzes some opposing criticisms of Honneth's reformulation. Finally, it concludes positively with Honneth's reformulation, as well as arguing that Fraser's use of the concept is close to Honneth's understanding, but with some conceptual difference. This article seeks to explore the theoretical contributions of Axel Honneth, particularly in his works, The Struggle for Recognition and Reification, aiming at diving deep into the debate on the contemporary ideological expressions and their incidence in the process of subjective constitution in teenage years. This particular interest springs from the need to interweave the concepts of reification, forgetfulness and recognition within a fruitful theoretical field in order to interpret a project work called Hip-Hop: cultures and identities, developed with teenagers in a public school in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. From our point of view, the concepts of reification and forgetfulness are fundamental to identify how the conservative ideological expressions are present in the imaginary of adolescents in the contemporary world. Although rereading the concepts of reification and forgetfulness, as proposed by the author, is regarded as essential for understanding the ideological expressions that are based on and guided by consumption. However, even though we acknowledge Honneth's efforts toward moving forward with the concept of reification, it is crucial to emphasize the mediation concept Lukács explored in his work, History and Class Consciousness, so as to elucidate how the forgetfulness of the primary recognition relations is processed. In this paper I will argue that critical theory needs to make its socio-ontological commitments explicit, whilst on the other hand I will posit that contemporary social ontology needs to amend its formalistic approach by embodying a critical theory perspective. In the first part of my paper I will discuss how the question was posed in Horkheimer’s essays of the 1930s, which leave open two options: (1) a constructive inclusion of social ontology within social philosophy, or else (2) a program of social philosophy that excludes social ontology. Option (2) corresponds to Adorno’s position, which I argue is forced to recur to a hidden social ontology. Following option (1), I first develop a meta-critical analysis of Searle, arguing that his social ontology presupposes a notion of ‘recognition’ which it cannot account for. Furthermore, by means of a critical reading of Honneth, I argue that critical theory could incorporate a socio-ontological approach, giving value to the constitutive socio-ontological role of recognition and to the socio-ontological role of objectification. I will finish with a proposal for a socio-ontological characterization of reification which involves that the basic occurrence of recognition is to be grasped at the level of background practices.

REIFICATION , *MARXIST philosophy , *SOCIAL theory , *COMMODITY fetishism - Abstract
This essay offers a defense of Lukács’s original formulation of the concept of reification (Verdinglichung), with a particular emphasis on defending the Marxist social-ontological commitments at work in that conception. An attempt will be made to demonstrate that these commitments cannot be summarily dismissed as they have been in Axel Honneth’s “rehabilitation” of the concept. Honneth’s project, it will be argued, consists in an attempt to dispense entirely with the Marxist character of the concept of reification, as well as an attempt to reconstruct the concept in purely normative terms as a “forgetting” of the intersubjective recognition which he takes to be both logically and chronologically prior to the cognition of which reification participates. In outlining this project, a defense of Lukács’s original conception of reification will be offered by means of a critique of Honneth’s criticisms of Lukács’s Marxist commitments. - Abstract
This article builds on a critical view to positivist theories. We argue that the fact that human beings are beings of deprivation has been overlooked as a driver of voluntarily association that stands on the moral commitment to good behavior that makes coexistence possible. In order to develop this postulate we discuss Tomas Hobbes' theory of the State and briefly sketch other theories. The argument follows the idea that human beings, depending on other people, have generated mechanisms to facilitate life in community, reaching beyond the selfish and violent nature that requiring discipline. We point to emotions and feelings as drivers of moral behavior. These require recognition of otherness and coexistence and may poausibly be a core State foundation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Certain strands of cosmopolitanism have been criticized on various occasions for merely mirroring the mental framework of a global elite that stresses positive attitudes to mobility, flexibility, and disinterested objective detachment to the detriment of ‘rooted’, local and national values. In this way, it is argued, it presents a one-sided opportunistic or naively affirmative picture of processes of globalization rather than taking seriously the challenges posed by the inherently normative dimension of cosmopolitan thought and practice. The present paper will argue for a return to the critical core of the cosmopolitan idea and proposes that the critique of reification, which recently received renewed interest by philosophers of the so-called third generation Frankfurt School, can serve as a vital tool for re-imagining cosmopolitan teacher education as critique. In particular, the discussion around the recent turn towards a standards and competencies oriented teacher education in Germany will be critically examined in this regard. Rather than presenting a mere factual description of our thinking, judgments and actions, a cosmopolitan orientation should be concerned with reminding us of the importance of a continuous critical challenge of their validity. Firstly, the concept of reification will be shown to provide the conceptual resources to describe and select relevant characteristics of contemporary social pathologies that cannot be adequately captured within liberal social philosophies. A closer analysis of reification as a deficient relation to oneself, to others, or to the world will then lead to the second question of how to conceive of non-reifying forms of relatedness, commitment and boundedness as enabling new forms of expressive freedom. Instead of one-sided, narrow and hasty reactions towards a perceived ‘global challenge’—either fetishizing borders or their transgression, an critical educational cosmopolitanism should bring into focus how educational institutions such as teacher education can provide, strengthen, and enhance the conditions for binding ourselves as citizens of the world in non-reifying ways.

In this article we intend to discuss central aspects of the concept reification conceived by Georg Lukács in his book “History and Class Consciousness”. Our aim, however, is to show the interpretation that Axel Honneth proposes as an actualization of that concept through an attempt to overcome the subject-object epistemological tradition in favor of an intersubjectivity theory. We intent to show how Honneth's reading of reification tries to give it a contemporary formulation taking his own theory of recognition as basis. Postulating social theory and ontological problems, this understanding about the reification has implications to his own intellectual trajectory, as well as to the thinking of critical theory in the context of contemporary society.

In this paper we propose to unravel the “prior recognition of the other” as a fundamental non-epistemic condition of the researches in education, avoiding certain problems caused by reification, that is, the attitude of not recognizing the knowledge of otherness. Based on the reflections of Axel Honneth, we observed the existence of a fundamental instance: underlying the perspective of knowledge there is a nonepistemic condition that can be oriented by the motives of others. It is, therefore, a proposal that shuns away from the dispute between different epistemological perspectives and the polarization or counterpoint among subjective and objective elements, both reified. To assume the recognition of the other implies, finally, the recognition of its otherness through its existence in fullness. In this aspect, Honneth’s theory comes to fill a gap in the case of the educational researches, because we could even risk saying that, without this acceptance of the other, any initiative would be subjected to fall into the nets of reification.

This article establishes the conceptual criteria that allow Honneth to elucidate the idea of reification as a forgetfulness of recognition manifested in forms of contempt that, by revealing the subjection of individuals to situations of violence, dispossession of rights, and dishonor, lead to the need to undertake a struggle for recognition that, framed within normative moral horizons, entails the praxis of love, law, and solidarity as essential spheres to achieve human resignification.

REFLEXIVITY , *REIFICATION , *INTERSUBJECTIVITY - Abstract
In this essay I offer a qualified defence of Axel Honneth's recognition-theoretical critique of reification. This defence begins by engaging with a cross-section of the recent critical responses to Honneth's theory. In response to these criticisms I develop a reading of the recognition-theoretical critique of reification which illuminates both the intentional structure and pre-ethical nature of affective recognition whilst also reconstructing the existential contours of reification, understood as the 'forgetfulness of recognition.' The paper concludes by taking the problem of 'forgetfulness' in a novel direction by drawing on the theory of double reflection expounded by Kierkegaard's pseudonymous author Johannes Climacus in the Concluding Unscientific Postscript. In this final discussion I argue that the recognition-theoretical application of the theory of double reflection provides a conceptual model which allows one to think through the social, cultural and political mediations which inhibit, or wholly dissolve, the individual's capacity to reflexively re-appropriate the cognition of social facts within the affectively charged substrate of intersubjectivity that, as Honneth argues, forms the bedrock of human social life. This thesis, entitled “Reification in teacher training: possible dialogues on the Spanish language teacher practice”, was developed in the Postgraduate Program in Education (PPGE) of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in the Research Line “Teaching, Knowledge and Professional Development”. From this, the general objective is to understand how and in what aspects the types of reification of Spanish language teacher training from public and private schools as well as colleges influence their professional practice. Therefore, we intended to address and discuss the concepts of reification and recognition from Axel Honneth’s work (2009a), by using the theoretical basis of other authors, such as Hegel, Freire, Imbernón, Almeida Filho, Leffa, among others. We used qualitative approach and Reconstructive Hermeneutics based on Habermas and Honneth. In order to achieve the intended objective, we carried out semi-structured interviews with 10 research participants who were named as mythological figures, and at some point maintained a relationship with Medusa. Thinking about the Medusa Myth brings to mind a scary being who petrified and reified the eyes of the gazer. Based on the data collected, we carried out an analysis to answer the research problem: How can foreign language teacher training be considered a reification factor at school? Could we find in Honneth’s theory, more specifically, in the concepts of reification the possibility for a more humanized and less violent Spanish language teacher training? Therefore, we carried out an analysis based on Honneth’s three types of recognition, and we developed a fourth type from research and interviews. Furthermore, we reflected on the absence of a theory of education for teachers that could help them to build with students a path for the development of knowledge that contributes to their teaching practice and their personal and professional achievement. From this investigation, we intend to find answers to the question whether violence of reification is present at teachers initial training of Spanish teachers in public and private schools, as well as college, to ascertain whether it has an influence on their professional practice, and also observe the possibility of its reversal through the recognition process.

This work aims at analyzing the scopes and limitations of the reformulation which Axel Honneth proposed of the idea of reification during his Tanner lectures in 2005. In order to defend the contributions which a concept of reification as forgetfulness of recognition may embrace, Honneth's proposal is rebuilt as opposed to the great number of objections it has received. The central argument here is to show that the weaknesses of Honneth's reification have to do with the weaknesses of his "receptive model" of recognition. As a consequence this work explores the possibility of substituting the Honnethian concept of recognition with an onthological-analytical one to outline then the scope of a reification understood as gradual moments of amnesia. The following Internship Report, titled The Phenomenon of Reification, is part of the curricular unit Estágio e Relatório Final [‘Internship and Final Report’], from the Masters Degree in Teaching Philosophy in High School at Coimbra University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, which had its internship component done at Mealhada’s Secondary School, which is part of Agrupamento de Escolas da Mealhada. This report describes, reflects upon and takes stock of the elements that were present in the context of the pedagogical practice, This practice raised a series of questions, that put forward an investigation of the chosen theme. This report is divided in two parts. The first one is a description and reflection about the internship itself, at Mealhada’s Secondary School, in the School Year 2019/2020, describing the context in which the internship occurred. This includes a broader look at that context, but it also notes the specificity of my experience. The second part is a historical and critical investigation of the concept of Reification, including its transformation and actualization, from being understood as a part of the productive dimension, to the way it is perceived as a forgetfulness of recognition, as it appears in the works of Georg Lukács and Axel Honneth, paying attention to its implications that can manifest themselves in a variety of scopes, including education. The conclusion is that there are elements that strengthen this phenomenon, so that having a vigilant stance towards them is deemed necessary.

In this paper, I will explore ideas advanced by Bradshaw, Pence and others who have written on compassion in healthcare. I will attempt to see how and whether their assumptions about compassion can be justified, and explore the role compassion should play in a modern healthcare system. I will justify scepticism at the idea of attempting to incentivise compassion through metrics. The Francis Report raises important questions concerning the nature of a healthcare system that harms rather than helps patients. If something is failing in modern healthcare, those in charge should naturally seek to remedy it. I will investigate whether this is due to the disappearance of compassion, and if so, what is it that is emerging to fill its place. I will consider whether we need to rehabilitate or enforce compassion in the system, or to acknowledge that our modern healthcare systems are incompatible with compassion and how we can make the best of what remains. This article examines the ethical framing of employment in contemporary human resource management (HRM). Using Axel Honneth's theory of recognition and classical critical notions of reification, I contrast recognition and reifying stances on labor. The recognition approach embeds work in its emotive and social particularity, positively affirming the basic dignity of social actors. Reifying views, by contrast, exhibit a forgetfulness of recognition, removing action from its existential and social moorings, and imagining workers as bundles of discrete resources or capacities. After discussing why reification is a problem, I stress that recognition and reification embody different ethical standpoints with regards to organizational practices. Thus, I argue paradoxically that many current HRM best practices can be maintained while cultivating an attitude of recognition. If reification is a type of forgetting, cultivating a recognition attitude involves processes of 'remembering' to foster work relations that reinforce employee dignity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Certain strands of cosmopolitanism have been criticized on various occasions for merely mirroring the mental framework of a global elite that stresses positive attitudes to mobility, flexibility, and disinterested objective detachment to the detriment of 'rooted', local and national values.1 In this way, it is argued, it presents a one-sided opportunistic or naively affirmative picture of processes of globalization rather than taking seriously the challenges posed by the inherently normative dimension of cosmopolitan thought and practice.2 The present paper will argue for a return to the critical core of the cosmopolitan idea and proposes that the critique of reification, which recently received renewed interest by philosophers of the so-called third generation Frankfurt School, can serve as a vital tool for re-imagining cosmopolitan teacher education as critique. Instead of one-sided, narrow and hasty reactions towards a perceived 'global challenge'"either fetishizing borders or their transgression, an critical educational cosmopolitanism should bring into focus how educational institutions such as teacher education can provide, strengthen, and enhance the conditions for binding ourselves as citizens of the world in non-reifying ways. In the novels of the Malaysian Indian K. S. Maniam, the contestation of recognition and reification forms the central tension in the protagonists' identity development as members of a minority community in the multi-ethnic landscape of Malaya/Malaysia. Each central character's conflict lies in his/her ability/disability to balance accepting ethno-cultural recognition on the one hand and contesting the reification that the Indian ethnic group subjects him/her to on the other (subsequently championing what Michael Sandel coins an "unencumbered" sense of self - a self that is "free and independent" from "the sanctions of custom and tradition"). This paper discusses Maniam's three novels, The return, In a far country and Between lives, to ascertain the extent to which recognition and reification are important themes in the award-winning novelist's corpus. Using the conceptualisation of recognition, reification and the unencumbered self, the paper investigates how Maniam's three Indian Malaysian protagonists, Ravi, Rajan and Sumitra, like most members of minority communities who are faced with the challenges of a multi-ethnic social landscape, challenge the ethno-cultural imposition that their own ethnic community subjects them to while realising the significance of culture towards a healthy sense of selves. PHILOSOPHY , *REIFICATION , *CAPITALISM , *CRITICISM (Philosophy) , *SOCIAL change , *RECOGNITION (Philosophy) - Abstract
This article engages Axel Honneth's recent work on Georg Lukács' concept of reification in order to formulate a politically relevant and historically specific critique of capitalism that is applicable to theorizing contemporary democratic practice. I argue that Honneth's attempt to reorient the critique of reification within the terms of a theory of recognition has done so at the cost of sacrificing the core of the concept, which forged a connection between the socio-political analysis of capitalist domination and an analysis of the unengaged, spectatorial stance of human beings toward the world, showing how they together impede emancipatory social transformation. In order to accomplish the unfinished task of rendering the critique of reification applicable to contemporary critical theory, I seek to synthesize the advantages of Honneth's approach, which focuses on the normative aspects of the critique of reification, with Lukács' emphasis on the practical, political-economic dimensions of reification and the historically specific pathologies of the capitalist social form. Axel Honneth and his theory of the Struggle for Recognition is the instrument used as a methodology to analyze the reification of non-human animals produced by veterinary medical institutions. Reification is translated as the denial of recognition of the legal, social and love and care spheres. The reconstruction of a legal, ethical and moral platform for veterinary activity in Colombia is proposed, where veterinarians become guarantors of the protection and rights of non-human animals. The present work is carried out through an analytical contrast of the criticisms brought by the international political movements and social scientists of the "intersex issue" to the way in which the biomedical practices and discourses are based on reified – according to Axel Honneth –forms of rationality set to deal with intersex subjects. At this point, it is questioned to what extent this modus operandi hinders the recognition and realization of intersex rights. As a consequence, it is hypothesized that the medical notions underlying the treatments and care for the intersex "patient" end up by objectifying it through structures of rationality based on reified models, which causes obstacles to some of their ethical and legal demands. In order to do so, it is a general objective to analyze, in opposition to the political and juridical questions of the intersex international movement, the discourse used by the rational construction of biomedical theory and practice in the face of the diseases that are conventionally called the "anomalies or disorders of sexual differentiation". In the meantime, it is investigated to what extent this scheme violates rights and makes impossible the effective recognition of intersexuals. In relation to the specific objectives, it is intended, initially, to conceptualize the notion of reification on the theoretical bases that compose the sense brought by Axel Honneth, as well as the relation of the term with his notion of recognition. Moreover, it is proposed to contextualize the emergence and historical evolution of medical practice in the face of the phenomenon and to establish some of the precepts that make up what can be called "biomedical rationality". In addition, it is proposed to situate some of the state of the art of the conquest of intersex rights, with special emphasis on Colombia and Australia. In order to achieve these aims, the theory of representation of social actors of the linguist Theo van Leeuwen (2008), which constitutes a critical model of discourse analysis, is applied as a method of approach.

, Axel Honneth is a German social philosopher in the “third generation” of the Frankfurt School. He published a book Reification: A Recognition-Theoretical View . He intends to add actuality once again to the theory of objectification that was established by Marx and developed by Lukacs. Thereby, Honneth reactualizes reification in a rather unique way. A salient feature of Honneth’s theory is in the understanding of reification as recognition oblivion. Specifically, he reinterprets Lukacs’ theory and applies the reinterpreted theory to the concept of reification on the basis of Honneth’s original concept of recognition. However, his peculiar concept of reification is fraught with problems, because it excludes a capitalist viewpoint on the sphere of commodity exchange from the theory of objectification that was formulated by Marx and Lukacs, and also because Honneth attempts to expand the concept of the mutual recognition between individuals which takes place in the social dimension into a concept of recognition, in disregard of cognition, that takes place between individuals and their environmental world. In doing so, Honneth is reinterpreting Lukacs’ theory on the levels of individuals and philosophical anthropology. The apparently intentional reinterpretation and expansion of the key concept of Lukacs’ theory by Honneth seems to result in a diminished significance of the theory of objectification in social criticism. In light of this, this paper will review the basic concept of the theory of objectification developed by Marx and Lukacs with the aim of identifying and analyzing problems in Honneth’s theory of reification and recognition., 論文, Article

Time se poriče: a) uloga uma da postavlja svrhe ljudskog djelovanja; b) izravno priznanje čovjeka kao osobe i nositelja smisla; c) instancija općosti i javnosti koja se preobražava u agregat asimetričnih parcijalnosti i privatnosti; d) moć zajedničkog djelovanja te održavanja i stvaranja ljudskog, vremenitog i otvorenog povijesnog svijeta. U trećem dijelu rada naznačuju se tri krilatice našeg doba koje ilustriraju središnju tezu o zatvaranju i re-naturaliziranju povijesnog svijeta: a) kraj ideologije, krilatica koja osporava političke ideale i utopijsku svijest, a sama postaje mega-ideologija fakticiteta; b) kraj povijesti, krilatica koja u obliku teleološke racionalnosti zagovara dovršenost ljudskog svijeta i ideologijski otklanja svaku razboritu alternativu; c) kraj politike, krilatica koja opravdava nepolitičke forme vladavine i moć zajedničkog djelovanja svodi na upravljanje, te kraj filozofije, krilatica koja smjera k scijentističkom discipliniranju i potiskivanju humanističke perspektive. U zaključku su istaknute tri točke otpora dominantnom duhu vremena: radikalna refleksija, pluralizam vrednota i humanistička filozofska perspektiva., The central intention of this paper is to shed light on the contemporary ideological processes that lead to re-naturalization of the man-made world. These ideological processes are reductive forms that curtail human and historical possibilities of man. The first part of the paper discusses the concept of reification. Through the expansive power of capital as the basic form of sociability, all human relations are reduced to relations between things. Therefore the concept of reification, from the methodological perspective of concrete totality, is the starting point for understanding the social ontology of modern times. The second part of the paper deals with the ideological reduction of various faculties of the mind to the instrumental rationality. Both forms of structural reduction – reification and instrumental rationality – carry out ideological role of displacement: quid pro quo and pars pro toto. This denies: a) the role of the mind that sets the purposes of human activity; b) direct recognition of man as a person and holder of the sense; c) instances of generality and the public that is transformed in an aggregate of asymmetric partiality and privacy; d) the power of joint action and the maintenance and creation of human, temporal and historical open world. The third part outlines the three slogans of our time which illustrate the central thesis of the closing and re-naturalization of historical world. These are: a) the end of ideology, which challenges the political ideals and utopian consciousness, but itself becomes a mega-ideology of the quasi-unchangeable facts of life; b) the end of history, which in the form of teleological rationality advocates perfection of the human world and ideologically eliminates any reasonable alternative; c) the end of politics, which justifies non-political form of government and the power of joint action boils down to management, and the end of philosophy, which aims to scientistic disciplination and repression of humanist perspective. The conclusion summarizes the three-point resistance to the dominant spirit of the times: a radical reflection, pluralism of values, and humanistic philosophical perspective.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The main guiding proposal of this paper aims to answer the following questions: In which way the official legislation of the teaching formation (allusive to the school teachers) based on the conceptions of competences contributes to the manifestation of reification, as its fundamental proposals surround centrally around of the know-do (Savoir-faire), leaving aside other fundamental aspects of the human formation, in a indiscriminate search for the practice? How can a change be taught on the perspective of intersubjective recognition? Thereby, the work in question is situated on the Philosophy of Education perspective, having as theoretical reference the contribution of the studies about reification and social recognition, from Axel Honneth, recognized member of the called third generation of the Frankfurt School. The general scope of the research is to perform an analysis of the philosophical implications referring to the political and epistemological content of the last renovation on the educational field. In more specific terms, our objectives are: a) conduct a critical analysis, based on the category of the reification, from the principles of the competences directed to the educational field by the legislation; b) elucidate the existing relations between claim of the practice on the instructor formation and the possible manifestations of reification in the educative process; c) measure the relation of the legacy of the reification category for the comprehension of the school teaching formation problem; d) study the possibilities to present proposals for the teaching formation inspired on the idea of recognition of the other, counterposed to reifying situations and non-recognition experiences. To do so, we followed as methodological orientation the hermeneutical spin of the critical theory .

To promote and sell its products, the beverage company Cult hires an army of event girls. The Cult Girls, as they are called, represent Cult at festivals, nightclubs, and local venues and are famous for their sexy outfits and flirty behaviour. Many girls find the job exciting; they see it as a way to get paid for going out at night to party and being the centre of attention makes them feel appreciated. Others find that their limits are seriously tested, having to deal with drunken guys and jealous girlfriends. Cult arranges team-building courses designed to help the girls prepare for the job. But how far can you go when identifying with and selling a product and what are the consequences? The case is primarily targeted at a student audience with a high level of reflectivity, but the provocative theme makes it teachable in most discussion-based classes, for example in HR or marketing, with no more than 30-40 students at the most. We have taught it in a 6th semester course on human capital as a contemporary philosophical problem, with 25-30 students in the context of a BSc program in philosophy and business administration.

Within the framework of the collection co-edited with M. Bankovsky, my own specific contribution is entitled “Sartre and Honneth on Conflict and Recognition”. Axel Honneth, primarily responsible for the contemporary renewal of recognition theory, has stated that he drew inspiration from Sartre, but he has also professed to overcome some limitations of the Sartrean approach: mainly, such an approach would overlook the possible resolution of conflict into stable and positive forms of mutual recognition. My chapter develops an interpretation of Sartre’s philosophy that turns out to be slightly different from Honneth’s. I show that a Sartrean perspective can bring to light certain blind spots of recognition theory, focusing on the problem of reification and the question of identity. First, I focus on the way Sartre delineates a phenomenology of what could be called “ordinary” reification: in so doing, he helps us develop a more realistic account of the way in which even positive forms of recognition relations are inseparable from the threat of objectification. In this sense, Sartre promise to remedy the limits of Honneth’s overly optimistic account of recognition. On such a basis, my contribution shows how Sartre’s philosophy paves the way for the exploration of ideas that could enhance current debates on recognition: I thus argue that Sartre’s attention to the conflictual nature of recognition relations can contribute to the further development of approaches that are critical of the fixation on identity, thus focusing attention on the agonistic dimension of recognition and defending an approach to struggles for recognition that is more pluralistic and differentiated than the one Honneth suggests., Dans le cadre de ce collectif coordonné avec M. Bankovsky, j’ai écrit un chapitre sur « Sartre and Honneth on Conflict and Recognition ».

Abstract: The subject of this article is Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition. Here it shall be discussed how Honneth have build a new paradigm for his theory and how he has developed it since its original publication in Struggle for recognition, in 1992. These developments, that have lead him to reflect on the concept of reification and on the sociology of work will be discussed in light of the idea of recognition itself, so that it becomes possible to see if they show any fruitful path for the development of this theory.

In this aspect, Honneth’s theory comes to fill a gap in the case of the educational researches, because we could even risk saying that, without this acceptance of the other, any initiative would be subjected to fall into the nets of reification., Neste artigo, propomos desvendar o “reconhecimento prévio do outro” como uma condição não-epistêmica fundamental das pesquisas em educação, evitando certos problemas ocasionados pela reificação, isto é, a atitude de não reconhecer o saber da alteridade.

The work seeks to investigate the actuality of the critique of reification for the educational field. Based on the analysis of the German thinker Axel Honneth, it defends the these that a critical concept of education depends on the theory of recognition in order to refuse every kind of reification. The work rebuilds, in a first step, the double strategy employed by Honneth in order to analyze Lukács' concept of reification. In the second step it tries to outline some traits of this recognition theory, by concentrating on the thesis of recognition primacy as the main way of human sociability. Finally, in the third step, based on the theory of recognition, it sketches a critique of the reification theory, by disclosing some implications for the educational field. The text responds to critics levelled at the small book published under the title Reification, in which the author has intended to recover from Marx’s legacy the concept of reification and present him in the light of the theory of recognition. At first the text specifies the frame within the original attempt to recover the concept of reification was made, emphasizing its literal interpretation. Then the text comes to specific problems that arise from the suggestion to understand reification as a form of neglecting previous recognition. Based on the premise that the person (Mitmensch) is recognized in a non-cognitiv way, the author argues that the rotinization and habitualization of social practices with autonomized dehumanizing goals migh lead to forget the original recognition of another person.

The paper discusses Axel Honneth's recent book on Reification and its relation to Honneth's theory of recognition. It critically examines Honneth's hypothesis concerning the existential roots of recognition, and compares two classical concepts of social critique, Reification and alienation, in order to argue for the superiority of the latter over the former Este ensayo discute el último libro de Axel Honneth sobre la cosificación (Verdinglichung, Frankfurt: Suhrkamp, 2005) y su relación con la teoría del reconocimiento avanzada por el mismo autor.

NONFICTION - Abstract
Axel Honneth was already recognized as the leading figure in the 'third generation' of critical theory, long before he took up, in 1996, Habermas's chair in philosophy at Frankfurt and the directorship of the Institut fur Sozialforschung. He has for a long time been reconceptualizing Frankfurt critical theory in terms of an originally Hegelian conception of recognition, and associated notions of respect and disrespect - a model which brings out a concern with human suffering which was a strong feature of the first generation of critical theorists. This volume of translated essays, together with a recent volume in German and his 2005 Tanner Lectures on reification, provides a good opportunity to triangulate Honneth's developing work.
