Background: This article describes how the National Reading Barometer project has redefined the concept of 'reading culture' in South Africa. Objectives: As expressed in the 2023 National Reading Survey (N = 4250) and the 2023 National Reading Barometer, a clearer description of reading cultures was developed to describe both individual reading practices (measured through the survey) and the national reading ecosystem (measured through the barometer). Method: We describe the survey and statistical tools developed to measure the new concept of reading cultures. This includes a survey questionnaire that introduced novel questions alongside established indicators. Reading is defined and measured through six distinct dimensions: reading purpose, habits, volume, depth, motivation, and identity. The expanded understanding of reading purpose includes reading for information, communication, and enjoyment. At an ecosystem level, the National Reading Barometer was applied to visualise data from the National Reading Survey and secondary data on reading ability, access to reading material, and enabling environmental indicators to provide a baseline for high-level longitudinal trends in the national reading environment. Results: The National Reading Barometer and National Reading Survey assisted to redefine the debate on reading cultures by providing evidence-based descriptions of varied reading cultures and situating these within the reading ecosystem. Conclusion: We conclude by proposing how this revised concept of reading cultures and the new tools for measuring impact may open research and policy advocacy opportunities in the literacy sector. Contribution: This article contributes a pluralistic, Afrocentric, and modernised understanding of reading cultures.

Reading, which improves language and mental skills, is the most effective way to reach information from the past to the present. The study tried to determine the relationship between the metacognitive reading awareness, reading intrinsic motivations, and reading motivations of eighth-grade students. The study group consists of 132 eighth-grade students in a secondary school in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province--the research design is a relational screening model. The metacognitive reading awareness scale," "Intrinsic Reading Motivation Scale," and "Book Reading Habit Scale" were used as data collection tools. As a result of the analyses, the students got moderate scores from the metacognitive reading awareness, intrinsic motivation, and book reading habit scales. Moreover, no notable difference was found in students' metacognitive reading strategies, reading motivations, and reading habits according to gender. The study suggests no significant link exists between "metacognitive reading awareness" and "intrinsic motivation to read," based on the correlation analysis conducted on the three scales. Nonetheless, there were exceptionally high positive correlations among the sub-dimensions of the scales.

We aim to examine similarities and differences in the developmental patterns of habitual (HRM) and situational reading motivation (SRM). We investigated the correlated change of SRM and two aspects of HRM: habitual reading enjoyment and habitual reading for interest. The sample comprised N = 1508 students with four waves of data collections spaced approximately every 18 months. Applying multivariate curve-of-factors models, first we found a decline in all three aspects of reading motivation from T1 to T3, and a stable trajectory from T3 to T4. Second, all three aspects of reading motivation correlated strongly regarding time-specific aspects, as well as level and trend factors. Third, the two HRM aspects showed higher correlations than did any aspect of HRM with SRM. Implications of the correlated declines of HRM and SRM, and for future research on reading motivation in general, are discussed.

In English teaching, developing students' reading habits has been emphasized for its critical role in promoting overall core competencies. However, in practice, many teachers and parents are not informed of the effective approaches to developing good English reading habits, hindering the overall development of students' core competencies. In light of this, an empirical study was carried out to explore the developmental features of students' English reading habits and individual, family and school factors that affect its development. A questionnaire was adopted to collect quantitative data. A total of 2,130 primary and secondary school students from China participated in the study. The results indicated that their English reading habits varied with age and gender. In terms of age, secondary school students, especially middle school students, performed better than primary school students. In terms of gender, females performed better in reading frequency, reading time and ways of reading, while males had a larger reading volume. Reading habits were found to be impacted by individual, school and family factors. Among them, age had the strongest influence on the development of English reading habits. These findings shed light on effective ways to develop English reading habits, especially in foreign-language-learning contexts.

The research aims to examine the effect of "peer assisted learning" and "learning together" techniques on 6th grade female students' reading comprehension achievements and attitudes towards reading. The research employed a quasi-experimental model with pretest -- post-test control group. Data collection tools of the research were Reading Attitude Scale, Reading Comprehension Achievement Test, Reading Habit Questionnaire, student interview forms and student journals. Results suggested that "peer assisted learning" affected 6th grade female students' reading comprehension achievement positively at a high level, "learning together" positively at a moderate level, but the current practices in Turkish course did not make a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement. Learning together and current practices were observed to be effective in ensuring the permanence of students' reading comprehension achievements, while "peer assisted learning" was not. No significant difference was found between the effects of techniques used in the research on the students' reading comprehension achievements or on the permanence of their reading comprehension achievements. No significant difference was found between the effects of "peer assisted learning," "learning together" and "current practices" on students' attitudes towards reading; while a significant difference was found in the permanence of students' attitudes towards reading resulting from (against) learning together technique. The students expressed generally positive opinions on "peer assisted learning" and "learning together" techniques.

The state of reading to meet a person's needs develops over time, and this habit becomes a part of the person's life. In this study, a focus group interview was the preferred method of qualitative research. High-level readers who read more than 30 books a year were included in the study. Even though they read about 30 to 100 books a year, they still think they should improve in some respects. Their reading habits were acquired at an early age from a role model or by the encouragement of people around them. When a person feels the need to read, the habit starts to be acquired internally, but it is during later stages (high school and university period) that habits are solidified. According to this study, the most important factor in gaining reading habits are the surrounding people (parents, relatives, teachers, and friends). Moreover, it is determined that the fact that each of the participants has different experiences, opinions, and feelings about reading and that their reading orientations, desires, and expectations and the discovery of their world of meaning make them high-level readers.

At the end of a two-year discussion about the value of homework in elementary school, the Seaview district decided to move away from the traditional model of homework, and introduced Wonder, Reading, and Play (WRaP) intended to be more equitable and authentic. A case study was conducted to assess the district's goals for and implementation of more equitable learning through WRaP. The experiences of stakeholders with regard to equity issues revealed success in reading due to an already established culture of reading. Lack of structure, consistency, and accountability in wonder, play, and content areas other than language arts resulted in limited success.

As from the acquisition of the skill in the language acquisition and learning process, until the competent reader level is reached and afterwards, the reading skill and action should be constantly improved. For this reason, reading should be in the habit of language learners. Accordingly, in this study, it was aimed to determine the Turkish book reading habits of students studying Turkish in Kyrgyzstan. In the study, phenomenology (phenomenology), one of the qualitative research designs, was used as it was aimed to reveal the existing situation regarding the determination of the Turkish book reading habits of the students studying Turkish in Kyrgyzstan. The working group of the research consists of 132 Kyrgyz students studying at the Kyrgyzstan Bishkek Turkey Turkish Education and Training Center (TTÖMER). Convenient (easily accessible) sampling method was used to determine the working group. In the collection of data in the research, the opinions of the Kyrgyz students on Turkish reading habits were collected with a semi-structured interview form. The scale used in the research was presented to the students as a questionnaire form online by the researchers. The data collection process was carried out on a voluntary basis and the students were informed about the purpose of the study. As a result, it has been determined that Kyrgyz students who learn Turkey Turkish as a foreign language read books in Turkish for travel and education, the books they read increase their Turkish vocabulary, accelerate their language learning, and improve their speaking and writing in the target language.

Access to books and a rich language environment at home are important for children's language development. In this study we explored self-reported reading practices in families in Norway (N = 1001) to gain insight into the reading habits parents have with their young children, and the factors that best explain book reading in Norwegian homes. By investigating relationships between how many books parents reported reading with their child last week, demographic factors, and orientational variables, we found that book reading is better explained by orientational factors -- such as children's interest in books and having reading routines in the home -- than by demographic factors (such as parents' educational level). The proportion of parents reporting reading no books, or only one book with their child in the last week was unexpectedly large (33%). The implication of these findings for the culture of reading in Norwegian homes is discussed.

This study describes Indonesian secondary school EFL teachers' and students' profiles of reading engagement, which comprises behavioral, affective, cognitive, and social dimensions. The researchers employed a survey design involving 70 teachers and 828 students of secondary schools in 50 regions in Java, Sumatra, and the Borneo Islands. The instrument used was a teacher questionnaire and a student questionnaire which contained 16 close-ended questions and 7 open-ended questions. The data from close-ended responses were tabulated and presented in percentages, while the data from open-ended responses were analyzed based on themes, then shown in excerpts. The key findings reveal that four dimensions of reading engagement have been implemented by EFL teachers. Both students and teachers show positive reading behavior and attitude toward reading materials and activities. These findings map the reading engagement practiced in EFL classes in secondary schools in Indonesia, which add knowledge about RE strategies improving EFL teachers' strategies to engage students in reading English texts, which is expected to enhance students' English reading comprehension and literacy.

This study investigated demographic profiles, reading characteristics and processes of good and poor young adult readers. Data were collected from 149 undergraduate students studying at a state university in Türkiye through a questionnaire set and eye-tracking experiments. Groups of this study - good and poor readers - were defined according to their performance in a combination of three reading comprehension tests and an oral reading skills test. As a result, significant differences were found between good and poor young adult readers in terms of their ages, genders, the number of books they have in their libraries, and eye movements such as saccade and fixation counts, saccade length, dwell time, and regressions but no differences in their reading habits, strategies, and attitudes, parents' educational and economic levels, educational backgrounds, and saccade and fixation duration. Concentrating on several components of reading, this study thus provides a comprehensive perspective on the differences between good and poor readers.

Drawing on data from a mobile ethnography study of 12 adolescents from one secondary school, this article proposes to examine the everyday digital reading resources and practices of Singapore adolescent youths to better understand the print and new media (fiction) leisure reading habits of adolescents. Mobile ethnography, with its capacity to capture adolescents' actual reading through images, texts, and video recordings, provides a new way to document and understand the changing reading habits of adolescents. Participants documented their print and digital reading on a smartphone app over four days, followed by a photo-elicitation interview. Findings showed that these adolescents read for pleasure and were self-directed readers who invested time in reading various new media fiction texts such as ebooks, Japanese manga and fanfiction. Practices of new media reading include cross-media consumption, engagement in fandom behaviours, and interest-driven searching for diverse reading materials. Adolescents are motivated to read when the reading experience promises immersive entertainment. A good story, ease of access to interesting content and potential for multiple media engagements encourage adolescents' volitional reading. Implications for curriculum and future research on adolescent volitional reading are discussed.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of reading habits among college level foundation Omani students and their impact on the participants' performance in tests. The study used a qualitative and quantitative research method in which 70 participants from the foundation level were included. A survey questionnaire was used to collect qualitative data, while two college-based reading tests were used to collect quantitative data from the college-based tests. The main research question this study attempted to answer was whether foundation-level students have positive reading habits and attitudes towards books. At the end of the study, the data were analyzed quantitatively, using descriptive and inferential statistics to ascertain whether there was a correlation between positive reading habits in English and the participants' performance in an examination setting. The results indicated that positive reading habits correlated positively with the participants' test scores on two consecutive tests. Given the positive effects that emerged from the current study, the researchers would like to recommend that English reading teachers guide and encourage their learners to engage in reading as much as possible, as such habits will help them improve all aspects of literacy and succeed in achieving their educational and life goals with ease.

Reading comprehension has a critical importance for almost every aspect of individuals' life. The aim of this study is to reveal the relations among students' perceptions of their Turkish language teachers' behaviours that encourage reading engagement, levels of reading enjoyment, reading self-efficacy, and reading success within the frame of a model, using PISA 2018 Turkey data. The study is based on the correlational research model and the sample includes 6450 (F= 3247, M= 3203) students who completed the PISA 2018 Turkey questionnaire. The data obtained from the PISA 2018 database were analyzed using the structural equation model (SEM) and the sobel test. SEM analyses revealed that the hypothesized model well fits the data and all the regression paths in the model are statistically significant. According to the research findings, teachers' behaviours that encourage students' reading engagement (TBESRE), reading enjoyment, and reading self-efficacy have significant direct effects on reading achievement. In addition, TBESRE has significant indirect effects on reading achievement through reading enjoyment and reading self-efficacy, and that reading self-efficacy has a significant indirect effect on reading achievement through reading enjoyment. Considering the findings of this study, it is recommended that teachers implement practices to encourage students' participation in reading activities and develop educational interventions to improve reading enjoyment and reading self-efficacy.

Today, learning no longer takes place on a definite place or time; rather, it has an ongoing and interactive nature, lasting throughout one's life. Relatedly, reading is usually considered to enhance learning, communication and the exchange of ideas. Given the importance of becoming a lifelong learner, this study focuses on the influence of reading habits on lifelong learning tendencies of university students as mediated by their enthusiasm for reading. A predictive correlational research model was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. A total of 376 undergraduates with diverse backgrounds were surveyed in a central city of Turkey. The mediated-path analysis demonstrated that belief in the impact of reading is a prominent predictor of university students' lifelong learning tendencies. Further, enthusiasm for reading was explored to mediate the link between beliefs in the impact of reading and lifelong learning tendencies. This study contributes to the debate and research on lifelong learning by using a national case which is relatively understudied and underrepresented international higher education research. It also adds to the theme by revealing direct and indirect paths between university students' beliefs in reading and lifelong learning tendencies as mediated by their enthusiasm for reading.

Children's early literacy experiences are critical, yet it remains unclear whether memories of early reading instruction continue to be associated with reading habits into adulthood. We examined the association between recollections of reading experiences and present-day reading habits in an adult population. University students responded in writing to three open-ended prompts asking about their memories of reading during early childhood, elementary school and high school. They also completed two questionnaires inquiring about reading enjoyment and frequency in elementary school and high school. For the concurrent measures of reading, participants described their current reading habits in an open-ended prompt and completed an author recognition test. Results showed positive links between favourable memories of reading during elementary and high school years and present-day reading habits. Conversely, unfavourable memories during high school were associated with unenthusiastic present-day reading habits. We found that reading instruction in school forms long-lasting memories, and these memories are linked in meaningful ways with print exposure during adulthood.

This paper's objective is to give a thorough summary of research on the reading behavior of Chinese primary and secondary school students. The majority of existing research in this field focuses on the importance of extensive reading, the status quo of reading practices among Chinese students, factors that influence student reading behavior, and techniques for enhancing student reading accomplishment. It is proposed that this review will generate more interest in the development of basic education students' reading skills.

This study aimed to reveal which physical strategies (behaviors) Turkish teacher candidates prefer when reading a printed or electronic book/text, what kind of operations they perform related to the text and the reasons for these interventions. Hence, the opinions of 150 teacher candidates in the Turkish Language Teaching program of Istanbul Aydin University Faculty of Education in the spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year were obtained through a semi-structured form developed by the researcher. Their opinions were analyzed with content analysis. The research was according to the phenomenology pattern. The behaviors of teacher candidates were personal reading strategies. They were classified and graded under various categories. The strategy for teacher candidates who prefer to read printed publications mostly is to make underlines. Then, strategies such as bookmark use and marking were more frequent. In the study, where sex and grade variables did not make a significant difference, some eccentric reading strategies (using a ruler while reading, taking a page/screen photo, using emoji, spraying perfume on the book, etc.) were also present. Finally, the study made various recommendations.

Gifted students have a reading capacity above their level. The aim of this study is to improve the reading speed and reading comprehension levels of gifted students through training in speed reading techniques. In the study, in which a total of 100 participants from the 4th, 5th and 6th grades attending the Science and Art Center took part, 28 hours of training in speed reading techniques were given to the students. The study was carried out according to a nested mixed methods design, which is one of the mixed research methods. While the quantitative data of the study were collected according to the pretest-posttest model without a control group, the qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with the students in the study. At the beginning of the study, the students' initial reading speeds were taken through a narrative and an informative text, and then these students were given 28 hours of speed reading techniques training. At the end of the studies, the students' post-reading speeds were taken and the difference between the pre-tests and the post-tests was compared using the SPSS 21 program. At the same time, semi-structured interviews were conducted with each student who took part in the study during the 28-hour training period, according to the planning made. In the studies carried out, it was concluded that the education in speed reading techniques increased the reading speed and reading comprehension levels of the gifted students, that the students developed a positive attitude towards reading and made an important step in gaining reading habits, and that the studies carried out would be beneficial in terms of increasing the academic success of the students.

The act of reading affects people in individual and social life. The purpose of this research is the evaluation of student opinions to develop reader culture in universities. Research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. Participants in this research included 60 students studying at various universities in Kazakhstan in the 2021-2022 academic year. It has been concluded that the reading habits of the university students participating in the research are at a moderate level, the students do not see themselves as highly qualified readers, and the reading habits of female students are relatively higher than male students. While the type of poetry is mostly preferred by female students, a small portion of male students stated that they read comics. Based on the research findings, it has emerged that universities should organize activities to increase students' reading culture.

This project examined academic reading in two contrasting English as a medium of instruction (EMI) university settings in Nepal and Sweden and the unique challenges facing students who are studying in a language other than their primary language. The motivation for the project was to explore the role of high-stakes testing in EMI contexts and the implications for the design of the "TOEFL iBT"® test. We employed a sequential mixed-methods approach to gather substantive and authentic qualitative data from stakeholders immersed in EMI settings. A small sample of students (Nepal = 19, Sweden = nine) were asked to complete reading logs over a period of 3 weeks so we could determine the types of texts and reading load associated with diverse EMI settings. Additionally, a larger cohort of students from each setting (Nepal = 69, Sweden = 60) completed questionnaires examining academic reading demands, reading skills, and practices. Students who completed the questionnaires also completed the reading section of the TOEFL iBT test. The same students also completed a "TOEFL"® family of tests suitability questionnaire so we could consider the suitability of the TOEFL iBT test for EMI contexts. Following test completion, a series of semistructured interviews (Nepal = 21, Sweden = 23) focused more closely on students' perspectives of reading demands in their academic contexts and the suitability of the reading section of the TOEFL iBT test to make claims about readiness to study in EMI contexts. Our findings revealed that different EMI contexts have different standards of high and low academic reading proficiency and that these differences may occur due to differences in educational experiences of the respective cohorts. The findings offer important new insights into academic reading and assessment in EMI contexts. Students in EMI contexts are sensitive to violations of expectations regarding test-taking experiences (face validity). The study has implications for the design of test tasks, which should consider local, contextual varieties of English.

Purpose: This study examines the extent to which the Home Literacy Environment (HLE) as measured by reading habits and resources, library use, and subscriptions or materials, as well as parental reading beliefs predict both language skills (i.e., vocabulary) at kindergarten and students' trajectories of growth from kindergarten (K) to grade 3 (G3). Method: The sample included 259 Spanish-English bilingual children and their parents living in Arizona. We measured HLE and parental reading beliefs with a questionnaire administered to parents during the kindergarten year. Children completed measures of English and bilingual Spanish-English vocabulary in grades K to G3. Results: Findings indicated that library use and reading habits and resources predicted skills at kindergarten, but not growth. Across all language outcomes, library use was the consistent factor associated with skills in kindergarten. Conclusion: Given that HLE was associated with variability in children's vocabulary skills at kindergarten but not with vocabulary growth, this suggests that timely HLE supports are essential. Supports around library use show promise, given their significant associations with vocabulary skills in Spanish-English bilingual children. Long-term school absences during pandemic lockdowns may result in learning gains and losses much like the summer reading loss, but little is known about the actual effects of such lockdowns. This mixed-methods study examined changes in reading enjoyment, amount and resources in three groups of bilingual children--English-Chinese, English-Malay, and English-Tamil speaking children--during the COVID-19 lockdown in Singapore. Results reveal a lockdown reading gap between children's stronger language (English) and weaker language (Chinese/Malay/Tamil). Within each language, results show differential reading gains and losses for children who enjoyed and did not enjoy reading in print and digital formats. Children's reading enjoyment before the lockdown, changes in reading enjoyment and print reading amount during the lockdown in English and Chinese/Malay were significantly correlated. Children preferred print reading over reading digitally both before and during the lockdown, and devices were underutilized for reading purposes.

Reading is as essential as other communicative skills; however, reading practice is not likely to be the first choice of practice for learners. This is especially true among Thai learners. This study examines extensive reading (ER), otherwise known as reading for pleasure or wide reading in combination with interactive groups to investigate the effects on Thai undergraduate students' reading ability, and their opinions toward their reading development, including an exploration of self-autonomous development. The study was a mix-method study with 30 students from a university in Thailand who voluntary participated for a 10-week study. Results from the pre-test scores (M = 13.17, SD = 4.58) and post-test scores (M= 20.73, SD = 6.28) indicate that there was a significant increase in the reading scores, t(29) = - 6.3, p = 0.000. The results suggest that extensive reading activities are likely to contribute to participants' reading skill improvement. In addition to the quantitative analysis, the qualitative interview analysis also revealed that participants maintained a positive attitude towards their reading skill development and self-autonomous skills.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the effect of the reading habits of Syrian students studying at secondary schools on their vocabulary learning motivation. The mixed research model was used in the study. The universe of the study consists of Syrian secondary school students studying in Kilis. The sample consists of 164 Syrian secondary school students studying at Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Imam Hatip Secondary School. Research data were collected using the "Book Reading Habit Attitude Scale" and "Word Learning Motivation Scale." In addition, a semi-structured interview form was used to identify students' ways of learning vocabulary. In the analysis of quantitative data, SPSS was used and independent groups t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation analysis were used. Content analysis was used in the analysis of qualitative data. As a result, appeared that Syrian secondary school students had a moderate reading habit, gender did not have an effect on their attitudes towards reading habits and their motivation to learn vocabulary, but grade level was effective in both their attitudes towards book reading habits and their motivation to learn vocabulary. In addition, it was found that students mostly used audio-visual tools and reading materials while learning vocabulary.

The fields of science and literacy education continue to be shaped by pervasive gender inequality. Previous research has documented how the formation of a 'science identity' is contingent on access to science capital while research in literacy education continues to highlight how boys struggle in their literacy acquisition. Despite a robust scholarship on gendered literacy practices and gender in STEM subjects, to date, there has been little investigation of the relationships between boys' science identity/ies and their literacy practices. We draw on a case study of 24 middle school boys living and learning in two different regions (e.g. metropolitan, rural) where we focus on how boys conceive of themselves as learners in two curriculum areas: science and literacy. Bridging multiple areas of scholarship (e.g., science literacy, science identity, boys in schooling), we concentrate on the participants' "self-belief in science" and "self-belief as readers" and consider the way they inform each other in reference to place. The implications of our study concern how the "science literate boy" comes to be in reference to the construction of discursive performances of science masculinities and how they are maintained alongside literate identities.

Few studies exist on the reading habits of the deaf population, and most of those that do were published more than 20 years ago. Hence, changes in reading habits due to the availability to the deaf population of online reading material and portable electronic devices have likely occurred. Additionally, in the hearing population, confinement causes changes in reading habits. We used an online questionnaire to compare the reading habits of 102 deaf and hard of hearing adult residents of Spain both before and during COVID-19 confinement. In general, more reading occurred during confinement, although not all participants showed this pattern: Regular readers read more during lockdown. Motivations for reading were largely unaffected by confinement. Furthermore, the time spent reading was not related to the availability of books at home: More was read in digital format during confinement.

Over the last years, the hashtag #BookTok has been viewed more than 100 billion times on TikTok. Hence, both scholars and practitioners have plead for integrating #BookTok in the literacy classroom, expressing the hope that this digital subculture might flip adolescents' conceptions of reading and improve their reading motivation. This article presents the first empirical inquiry into students' evaluations of #BookTok in an educational context. Reporting a survey study among 142 ninth-grade students in the Netherlands, who were introduced to #BookTok through a compilation video featuring the most popular Dutch #BookTokers, the article shows that the phenomenon especially appeals to students who already read for pleasure frequently. Evaluations by book avoiders, on the other hand, were overwhelmingly negative. Promisingly, though, students who can be described as "book doubters," who do not read often despite a relatively positive reading attitude, frequently reported an intention to use #BookTok, both in leisurely and educational settings. Hence, the article argues that integrating #BookTok in literacy education might especially serve students fitting the book doubter persona. At the same time, the results underline the importance of differentiation in the literacy classroom, also regarding the use of #BookTok.

This paper reports results from a quantitative curriculum study on literature modules in Austrian undergraduate teacher education programmes. In order to optimise course delivery in literature classes at the University College of Education Upper Austria (PHOÖ), reading habits and attitudes of 153 first-year EFL students for secondary school education were assessed in an online-questionnaire. The questionnaire examined students' exposure to literary texts, their self-assessment as avid readers, their performative literacy, and their preferred reading stance. Results show rather limited avid reading, a self-centred performative literacy as well as a profoundly pragmatic reading stance. Such habits and attitudes could not only jeopardise success within the current teacher education study programmes but also aggravate the well-known Peter Effect, rendering prospective EFL teachers incapable of inspiring enthusiasm for literary reading in their future students. After discussing these results, the paper concludes with potential ramifications for curricular revisions as well as avenues for further research.

This study sought to explore the reading culture of students in pre-tertiary technical institutions from two Municipalities in Ghana. The study adopted a descriptive observational cross-sectional study design to understand the phenomenon under study. The population of the study consisted of two hundred respondents who were purposively sampled from a cross-section of the study population. A research survey and observation were used as research instruments for data collection. The analysis of the data revealed that respondents preferred to read among the four macro skills. Respondents' preference in terms of genres was mostly limited to course-related reading materials that could aid academic work, although, it was observed that students have access to other reading materials. It also emerged from both the survey and observation data that although students engage in reading activities regularly, the duration for such activities is relatively short. Thus, students should be encouraged to read longer for the needed impact. It also emerged that students access more reading materials online, although internet accessibility is not always promised. It is recommended for the creation of more opportunities that will allow students to engage in reading including giving them adequate online access with the needed supervision from school and home for greater impact.

Second language (L2) readers develop new screen-based reading habits as they learn in an increasingly digital world. This study examines the emerging digital-reading practices (EDRPs) of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The study identifies three prominent approaches that influence the digital-reading practices of EFL learners, it investigates how EFL learners perceive the effects of EDRPs on several crucial aspects of L2 reading, and it explores the actual practices of emerging digital-based patterns. In this study, which has an exploratory sequential mixed methods design, the main participants were 111 Saudi English language learners (57 males and 54 females). The triangulation strategy used for the multidimensional methods of data collection included a questionnaire, journal entries, and interviews. Thorough descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations), inferential statistics (two repeated measures of analysis of variances and multiple linear regressions), thematic framework analysis, and several phases of analysis for coding and categorizing the data were all undertaken. These analyses showed that shallower forms of digital reading, selective digital reading, and bouncing reading behavior are three approaches that shape EFL learners' digital-reading practices, and that digital reading had observable adverse effects on nine essential aspects of reading. Implications for practice are foregrounded.

With increased access to technologies for reading, more understanding is needed about how adolescents engage with print and digital reading across school and out-of-school contexts. In this study, mobile ethnography was used to document the everyday print and digital reading practices of adolescent girls from one all-girls' school. They responded to real-time researcher prompts about their reading across various timings, locations, and devices over four days, and participated in photo-elicitation interviews. Findings showed that as students moved between locations, they also transited across devices, platforms, and formats, making use of different print and digital resources for varied ways of reading. Their ability to 'style-shift' flexibly across the boundaries of school and personal spaces, various devices and platforms allowed them to independently optimise reading as a resource for their everyday leisure, information seeking, and learning purposes. Insights, implications, and challenges for learning in a post-pandemic digital age are discussed.

Studies find a deterioration in reading attitudes. This is worrying since research suggest that attitudes are key in developing reading comprehension. The aim of this study was, hence, to examine the relationship between the amount of school reading experience, beliefs about reading outcomes and reading attitudes. The theoretical framework was based on McKenna's model of reading attitudes acquisition, with a focus on context of the Croatian language classes. Sample of 3918 gymnasium graduates from Croatia (73.4% female) completed the survey. The results show that the reading experience is associated with reading attitudes directly and "via" mediation of reading beliefs. Students who participated in more reading activities in the classes had more positive beliefs about reading, which contributed to more favorable attitudes. This is an important input in understanding reading since these elements of the McKenna model were not widely confirmed. The results also highlight the importance of diverse reading curricula.

Many students infrequently read during leisure time. Due to fast, unconscious decisions, they may overlook the possibility of reading. We tested the impact of nudging on reading frequency, reading attitude, and reading skills. Two studies targeting Grades 4 to 6 (N = 105) and Grades 7 and 8 (N = 146) compared: (1) a nudging condition--participants twice a week receiving reminders to read, (2) an information condition--participants once receiving information about the importance of reading, and (3) a control condition--participants receiving neither information nor reminders. In primary education, nudges positively affected parents' knowledge of children's books and students' reading attitudes. In secondary education, nudges positively impacted students' book knowledge. All effects only occurred for those students and parents most prone to reading. For the majority of the students, nudges did not improve reading outcomes. Therefore, we speculate about more effective ways of nudging reading.

In this study, it was aimed to examine the reading habits levels and making the correct decision styles of basketball, handball, volleyball, and football coaches and referees in terms of some variables, the research was carried out with the general survey model, one of the quantitative research designs, the active coaches and referees of basketball, football, volleyball, and handball in Izmir, Denizli and Usak provinces constituted the universe of the study, the sample of the study, on the other hand, consisted of 98 participants, 52 of whom were coaches and 46 were referees, determined by the simple random sampling method, one sample t-test at a 0.05 significance level was conducted to determine whether the sample represented the universe equally and homogeneously. Melbourne decision making scale I-II, and book reading habits scale were used to collect data in the study. Since the data are suitable for normal distribution, the t-test in comparing the pairwise means; parametric tests such as one-way ANOVA tests were used at 0.05 significance level in comparing the mean scores of more than two groups. In terms of education levels, it has been observed that female coaches and referees studying at faculties of sports sciences have higher levels of reading habit, love of reading, and being influenced by books. In addition, it was determined that individuals who trust and respect the decisions of their families have higher reading habits and correct decision-making styles and do not panic during the decision-making process.

The posing of Intensive Reading (IR) as a fundamental rudimentary reading act and the endorsement of Extensive Reading (ER) as supplemental reading practice seems to be essential for literacy educators. This study tried to unearth the nature of the interplay between intensive and extensive reading as experienced by graduate Arabic native speakers in the United Arab Emirates. Moreover, the study aimed at capturing the students' views about the roles of the intensive reading and extensive reading in shaping their reading experiences. The study employed a sequential explanatory mixed method design. The first phase of the study featured a questionnaire that was collected from students (n=50) followed by interviewing students (n=4) in the second phase. The results revealed that graduate students dealt with reading as a discursive act where they gained from the interplay between the (IR) and (ER). The students viewed the relationship between (IR) and (ER) as reciprocal and hence (IR) promoted (ER) and vice versa. Nonetheless, the nature of the overt instruction and the pre-selected materials used by instructors are viewed as obstructive to the natural flow of (ER). The study recommends that (ER) and (IR) should be treated as part of the continuum in literacy process.

Ability to read is crucial as reading affects intellectual and emotional growth of an individual. Those who read well have more chances in widening their mental horizons and better opportunities of success. Hence, this paper is an attempt to understand the reading habits and attitudes of the students in the Faculty of Education in Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam. To collect the relevant data, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to 80 students. The questionnaire investigated the students' reading habit, preferences, and attitudes towards reading. The research findings through quantitative analysis revealed that the students had an overall positive attitude towards academic and leisure reading as they read academically and leisurely daily or at least once a week. Apart from that, digital materials are considered better compared to printed texts when it comes to the students' preference and its availability. Based on the findings, several recommendations were made to help improve students' reading habits and attitudes. Having a national survey on Malaysian students' reading habits is deemed necessary as it can document current trends (including the use of digital materials as a form of reading) and factors affecting students' reading habits and attitudes so that more fruitful actions to improve students' reading habits can be taken. Finally, teachers should also play a more significant role in motivating students to read as the findings yield that teachers are shown to have an impact on students' reading habits and attitudes.

The study evaluated reading habit among students in Ekiti State Secondary Schools. The study specifically examined the frequency and time of reading among Junior Secondary School students in Ekiti State, the extent students read, how teachers' attitudes affect their students reading habits, and ways reading habit can be improved. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted in this study. The population for the study consisted all of the Junior Secondary School Students in public secondary schools in Ekiti \central senatorial district. The size of the sample was 200 students drawn from ten public secondary schools using multistage sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire tagged Reading Habit Questionnaire (RHQ) was used to collect relevant data for the study. The responses obtained were collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that most of the students rarely read as majority of them spend less than 2 hours daily on reading. They settle down to read only when given assignments or when examination was near. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended among others that parents should teach their children to start reading from an early age and should provide reading materials for them. Also, it was recommended that teachers should engage students in fervent reading and writing activities.

The aim of the current study is to find out the possibility of transfer of affective domains of reading specifically reading habits and attitudes from L1 to EFL and the role of learners' proficiency level on these reading habits and attitudes. The study was designed as a descriptive research. The participants were 273 university-level students who enrolled in English classes in a state university in Turkey. 136 of them were at beginner level (A1) and 137 of them were at elementary (A2) level according to the proficiency level based on CEFR. Attitudes Towards Reading Habits Scale, English Reading Habits Scale and reading parts of English Comprehension Level Test were used to collect data. The results of the study have revealed that there is not any significant and meaningful relation between beginner (A1) level learners' L1 reading attitudes and EFL reading habits (r=0.016 and p>0.01). However, the relation between elementary (A2) level learners' L1 reading attitudes and EFL reading habits is positive and significant (r=0.208 and p<0.01). L1 reading attitudes can predict the 10% of the EFL reading habits in a positive and significant manner (R= 0.306, R[superscript 2]= 0.10, F = 2,233, p<0.05). In terms of learners' reading proficiency level, the results of the study have showed that for elementary (A2) level learners, the relation between EFL reading habits and their reading proficiency is positive and significant (r=395 and p<0.01). Their reading proficiency level can predict the 15% of the EFL reading habits in a positive and significant manner (R= 0.395, R[superscript 2]= 0.15, F = 24.921, p<0.01).

This study explores the impact extended participation in literature circles had on the reading attitudes of university-age preservice teachers following their involvement in literature circles for one academic year, as part of their training. The participants of the study consisted of 21 pre-service teachers with a low or moderate level of reading habits and reading attitudes. The research was conducted through a mixed methods approach. Although both quantitative and qualitative data were collected in the study, particular emphasis was given to the data collected from the qualitative part (quan+QUAL). In line with the quantitative data, it was concluded in the study that extended involvement in the literature circles had a positive effect on the reading attitudes of the pre-service teachers. The qualitative data, which was obtained through interviews, revealed four themes. The themes emerged as love and desire for reading, benefits of reading, importance of reading and reading habits as a result of the analysis. The results obtained from the research are important in terms of contributing to the improvement of pre-service teachers who will play important roles in Turkey's becoming a literate society.
