A 3d–4f heterometallic metallacrown with formula of [EuCu5(quinha)5(sal)2(py)5]CF3SO3·py·3H2O (1) (H2quinha = quinaldichydroxamic acid; Hsal = salicylaldehyde) has been synthesized. This complex shows field-induced slow magnetic relaxation via a Raman-like process, where studies of the isostructural {LuCu5} (2) and {YCu5} (3) complexes show that the slow dynamics mainly arise from the {Cu5} S = 1/2 ground state rather than the EuIII ion. However, the EuIII ion enhances the relaxation rates of the {Cu5} unit which likely arises from second-order effects in the formally diamagnetic 7F0 ground state of EuIII. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A wheel-shaped Dy(iii) single-molecule magnet (SMM), supported by polyoxotungstates, Cs15K8Na12[K⊂{(AsW9O33)Dy(H2O)2}6]·71H2O (1), is described here. An extremely rare non-Kramers holmium(III) single-ion magnet (SIM) is reported to be stabilized in the pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry by a phosphine oxide with a high energy barrier of 237(4) cm−1. The suppression of the quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) at zero field and the hyperfine structures originating from field-induced QTMs can be observed even from the field-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility in addition to single-crystal hysteresis loops. These dramatic dynamics were attributed to the combination of the favorable crystal-field environment and the hyperfine interactions arising from 165Ho ( I=7/2) with a natural abundance of 100 %. Two Ln(iii) (Ln = Ce or Nd) complexes based on [15-MC-6] (MC = metallacrown) and phosphine oxide are reported for the first time with the Ln(iii) ion featuring nearly perfect hexagonal bipyramidal LnO8 geometry, with pseudo-D6h symmetry. We have reported two unprecedented single-ion magnets (SIMs) with the homoatomic LnN10 coordination geometry, where the central Ln (Ln = DyIII or ErIII) ion is interlocked by two pentadentate ligands (N5) affording a low symmetry polyhedron. A family of high-nuclearity [LnIII6MnIII12] (Ln = Gd, Tb) nanomagnets has been synthesized, of which two are in D2 molecular symmetry and the other two are in C1 symmetry. X-ray crystallography shows that each of them contains a similar {MnIII8O13} unit, four marginal MnIII ions, and two linear {LnIII3 units with parallel or perpendicular orientation for high- and low-symmetry cores, respectively. For [GdIII6MnIII12], the distinct spins of the {MnIII8O13} unit lead to different spin ground states (Sr = 23 for the high-symmetry one and ST = 16 for the low-symmetry one), and significant magnetocaloric effects are observed in a wide temperature range [full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of -▵Sm > 18 K] that can maximizes the refrigerant capacity, which may be attributed to the ferromagnetic interactions. By replacement of isotropic GIII with anisotropic TbIII, they behave as single-molecule magnets, with the high-symmetry one possessing a larger effective barrier (36.6 K) than the low-symmetry one (19.6 K). Lanthanides serve as a group of preferable objectives for the construction of luminescent single-molecule magnets (SMMs) due to their excellent performances in areas of SMM and luminescence for molecular materials, showing a great potential of applications in high-density data storage, quantum computing, light-emitting diodes, biofluorescence labelling, etc. This review concentrates on the design strategies for the construction of luminescent SMMs referring to the organic chromophores and transition metal-containing chromophores as the antennas, as well as the recent examples of luminescent SMMs. To investigate the magneto-luminescent behavior (including the magneto-luminescent coupling), a few of classical complexes are discussed in the review to emphasize the importance of studying the correlation/coupling between relaxation mechanism and luminescence for lanthanide SMMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
