The competition among Food & Beverage companies has substantially increased in today's age of digitization. Sales forecasting is one of their main challenges. Due to space limitations, employee shortages, and rising online demand, retail sales forecasting became extremely important for Food and Beverage companies. This research analyzed the sales data of a multinational Food & Beverage Company. It proposed a framework using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) clustering, Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering (HAC), and Random Forest algorithm for forecasting sales. This model analyzes the impact of the weekends, holidays, promotional activities, customer sentiments, festivals, and socio-economic situations in sales data and is able to forecast sales ranging from one to 15 months. An investigation of the suggested model's performance compared to numerous cutting-edge sales forecasting techniques is carried out to show its efficacy. Here, we demonstrate that the proposed hybrid model surpasses current predicting and computing efficiency methods. The results of this study can help retail managers to allocate resources and manage inventories in well-informed ways. Summary: The promising results of ML (machine learning) methods in various disciplines have led to the frequent use of these methods in health fields such as disease diagnosis, personalized medicine, medical image‐based diagnosis, and predicting the number of deaths and cases in a pandemic. However, a neglected area in the field of healthcare is the lack of study with ML to predict treatment outcomes for tuberculosis (TB) patients, particularly children experiencing failed treatment. This need has become more apparent as the coronavirus pandemic has reversed the gains of health institutions with TB disease, especially in children. Therefore, this article conducted a study using the stacked ensemble ML method to early predict the risk for children experiencing a failed treatment outcome of TB. To fulfill this need and determine the most appropriate technique, a two‐stage methodology was followed in this work. First, predictions were obtained by combining the information gain feature selection (IGFS) approach with a variety of single‐based ML algorithms, including logistic regression (LR), deep belief neural networks (DBN), random forest (RF), and decision tree (DT). Second, the proposed method, which includes a stacked ensemble ML technique, was used. The latter model uses LR as a meta‐learner and the aforementioned single‐based ML algorithms (DBN, LR, RF, and DT). The performance results of ML models used in the two stages were compared, and the proposed model which is the combination of the stack‐based ensemble learning model and the IGFS technique provided better ROC curves, accuracy, precision, and recall results. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has become increasingly popular in various fields of activity. Cloud platforms have also grown in popularity, as they offer services that are more secure and accessible worldwide. In this context, cloud-based technologies emerged to support ML, giving rise to the machine learning as a service (MLaaS) concept. However, the clients accessing ML services in order to obtain classification results on private data may be reluctant to upload sensitive information to cloud. The model owners may also prefer not to outsource their models in order to prevent model inversion attacks and to protect intellectual property. The privacy-preserving evaluation of ML models is possible through multi-key homomorphic encryption (MKHE), that allows both the client data and the model to be encrypted under different keys. In this paper, we propose an MKHE evaluation method for decision trees and we extend the proposed method for random forests. Each decision tree is evaluated as a single lookup table, and voting is performed at the level of groups of decision trees in the random forest. We provide both theoretical and experimental evaluations for the proposed method. The aim is to minimize the performance degradation introduced by the encrypted model compared to a plaintext model while also obtaining practical classification times. In our experiments with the proposed MKHE random forest evaluation method, we obtained minimal (less than 0.6%) impact on the main ML performance metrics considered for each scenario, while also achieving reasonable classification times (of the order of seconds). Background: Despite the clear clinical diagnostic criteria for necrozoospermia in andrology, the fundamental mechanisms underlying it remain elusive. This study aims to profile the lipid composition in seminal plasma systematically and to ascertain the potential of lipid biomarkers in the accurate diagnosis of necrozoospermia. It also evaluates the efficacy of a lipidomics-based random forest algorithm model in identifying necrozoospermia. Methods: Seminal plasma samples were collected from patients diagnosed with necrozoospermia (n = 28) and normozoospermia (n = 28). Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to perform lipidomic analysis and identify the underlying biomarkers. A lipid functional enrichment analysis was conducted using the LION lipid ontology database. The top 100 differentially significant lipids were subjected to lipid biomarker examination through random forest machine learning model. Results: Lipidomic analysis identified 46 lipid classes comprising 1267 lipid metabolites in seminal plasma. The top five enriched lipid functions as follows: fatty acid (FA) with ≤ 18 carbons, FA with 16–18 carbons, monounsaturated FA, FA with 18 carbons, and FA with 16 carbons. The top 100 differentially significant lipids were subjected to machine learning analysis and identified 20 feature lipids. The random forest model identified lipids with an area under the curve > 0.8, including LPE(20:4) and TG(4:0_14:1_16:0). Conclusions: LPE(20:4) and TG(4:0_14:1_16:0), were identified as differential lipids for necrozoospermia. Seminal plasma lipidomic analysis could provide valuable biochemical information for the diagnosis of necrozoospermia, and its combination with conventional sperm analysis may improve the accuracy and reliability of the diagnosis. We propose a random forest based estimation procedure for Quantile-Oriented Sensitivity Analysis—QOSA. In order to be efficient, a cross-validation step on the leaf size of trees is required. Our full estimation procedure is tested on both simulated data and a real dataset. Our estimators use either the bootstrap samples or the original sample in the estimation. Also, they are either based on a quantile plug-in procedure (the R-estimators) or on a direct minimization (the Q-estimators). This leads to 8 different estimators which are compared on simulations. From these simulations, it seems that the estimation method based on a direct minimization is better than the one plugging the quantile. This paper introduces an assumption-lean method that constructs valid and efficient lower predictive bounds for survival times with censored data. We build on recent work by Candès et al. (2023) , whose approach first subsets the data to discard any data points with early censoring times and then uses a reweighting technique, namely, weighted conformal inference (Tibshirani et al. 2019), to correct for the distribution shift introduced by this subsetting procedure. For our new method, instead of constraining to a fixed threshold for the censoring time when subsetting the data, we allow for a covariate-dependent and data-adaptive subsetting step, which is better able to capture the heterogeneity of the censoring mechanism. As a result, our method can lead to lower predictive bounds that are less conservative and give more accurate information. We show that in the Type-I right-censoring setting, if either the censoring mechanism or the conditional quantile of the survival time is well estimated, our proposed procedure achieves nearly exact marginal coverage, where in the latter case we additionally have approximate conditional coverage. We evaluate the validity and efficiency of our proposed algorithm in numerical experiments, illustrating its advantage when compared with other competing methods. Large-scale digital soil maps are essential for rational and sustainable land management as well as accurate fertilizer application. This study focuses on digital mapping of soil properties, namely soil organic carbon (SOC), pH, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in Chernozem topsoil and subsoil. The study was conducted on two arable fields in the Cis-Ural forest-steppe zone of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia). The random forest algorithm in combination with terrain attributes and Sentinel-2A satellite data was applied for spatial prediction of soil properties. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) were used to determine the model performance. According to the Pearson correlation, a significant positive relationship between SOC and N content was found at all sites and depths (R = 0.76–0.92). A cross-validation revealed that SOC (R2 = 0.22–0.62, RMSE = 0.35–0.89%) and N (R2 = 0.16–0.60, RMSE = 21.11–36.6 mg kg−1) were best predicted among other properties at all depths using remote sensing data, whereas the performance of predictive models decreased with depth. However, a relationship between the content of some soil properties and their spatial distribution at study depths was observed, which can be used as an additional explanatory variable. We suppose that digital mapping of soil properties at the arable field scale should not be limited to topographic and remote sensing variables. Based on this information, the use of auxiliary variables, such as collocated soil information in combination with relief and remote sensing data can be effective in more accurately estimating the spatial distribution of properties across arable fields at different depths. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into spatial modelling of the vertical distribution of soil properties, highlighting the significance of remote sensing data at the arable field scale. Early monitoring of within-field yield variability and forecasting yield potential is critical for farmers and other key stakeholders such as policymakers. Remote sensing techniques are progressively being used in yield prediction studies due to easy access and affordability. Despite the increasing use of remote sensing techniques for yield prediction in agriculture, there is still a need for medium-resolution satellite imagery when predicting canola yield using a combination of crop and soil information. In this study, we investigated the utility of remotely sensed flowering information from PlanetScope (at 4 m) satellite imagery combined with derived soil and topography parameters to predict canola yield. Our yield prediction model was trained and validated using data from 21 fields managed under variable rate seed and fertilizer application, including cleaned harvester yield maps, soil, and topography maps. To quantify the flowering intensity of canola, 9 vegetation indices (VIs) were calculated using spectral bands from PlanetScope imagery acquired for the reproductive stages of canola. We created five random forest regression models using different subsets of covariates, including VIs, soil, and topography features, to predict canola yield within the season. Using a random forest regression algorithm, we recorded accuracies ranging from poor to best performing using coefficient of determination and root mean squared error (R2: 0.47 to 0.66, RMSE: 325 to 399 kg ha−1). The optimal subset of covariates identified electrical conductivity (EC), Normalized Difference Yellowness Index, and Canola Index as the key variables explaining within-spatial variability in canola yield. Our final model exhibited a validation R2 of 0.46 (RMSE = 730 kg ha−1), demonstrating the potential of medium-resolution satellite imagery during the flowering stage to detect and quantify sub-field spatial and temporal floral phenology changes when predicting canola yield. Execution of a marine operation (MO) requires coordinated actions of several vessels conducting simultaneous and sequential offshore activities. These activities have their operational limits given in terms of environmental parameters. Wave parameters are important because of their high energetic level. During the execution of a MO, forecast wave spectral parameters, i.e., significant wave height (Hs), peak period (Tp), and peak direction, are used to make an on-board decision. For critical operations, the use of forecasts can be complemented with buoy measurements. This paper proposes to use synthetic statistics of vessel dynamic responses to predict "real-time" wave spectral parameters using multi-output machine learning (ML) regression algorithms. For a case study of a vessel with no forward speed, it is observed that the random forest model predicts accurate Hs and Tp parameters. The prediction of wave direction is not very accurate but it can be corrected with on-board observations. The random forest model has good performance; it is efficient, useful for practical purposes, and comparable with other deep learning models reported in the scientific literature. This paper tackles the problem of constructing a nonparametric predictor when the latent variables are given with incomplete information. The convenient predictor for this task is the random forest algorithm in conjunction to the so-called CART criterion. The proposed technique enables a partial imputation of the missing values in the data set in a way that suits both a consistent estimator of the regression function as well as a partial recovery of the missing values. The imputation is done through iterative assignation of the missing values to the tree's cells, maximising the CART criterion. Background: Life satisfaction is a key component of students' subjective well‐being due to its impact on academic achievement and lifelong health. Although previous studies have investigated life satisfaction through different lenses, few of them employed machine learning (ML) approaches. Objective: Using ML algorithms, the current study predicts secondary students' life satisfaction from individual‐level variables. Method: Two supervised ML models, random forest (RF) and k‐nearest neighbours (KNN), were developed based on the UK data and the Japan data in PISA 2018. Results: Findings show that (1) both models yielded better performance on the UK data than on the Japanese data; (2) the RF model outperformed the KNN model in predicting students' life satisfaction; (3) meaning in life, student competition, teacher support, exposure to bullying and ICT resources at home and at school played important roles in predicting students' life satisfaction. Conclusions: Theoretically, this study highlights the multi‐dimensional nature of life satisfaction and identifies several key predictors. Methodologically, this study is the first to use ML to explore the predictors of life satisfaction. Practically, it serves as a reference for improving secondary students' life satisfaction. Pavement markings are essential traffic control devices that enhance safety for motorists during nighttime. Numerous statistical learning models have been developed in prior studies to predict the retroreflectivity of the markings, but the applicability of these models is questionable in terms of accuracy. The key objective of this study was to develop a machine learning–based framework that can be used by US transportation agencies to reliably predict the retroreflectivity of their pavement markings over a period of 3 years utilizing the initially measured retroreflectivity and other key project conditions. The random forest (RF) algorithm was used in this study to develop the proposed framework considering seven types of marking materials in three different US climate zones. A total of 49,632 transverse skip retroreflectivity measurements were retrieved from the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) and 11 RF models were developed to sequentially predict retroreflectivity at different prediction horizons. The models were trained with randomly selected 80% of the total data points, and the remaining 20% data points were utilized for testing the predictive performance of the developed models. The RF models predicted the retroreflectivity with a superior level of accuracy (R2 ranging between 0.88 and 0.99) than the models proposed in prior studies. Optimizing production–living–ecological space (PLES) can benefit territorial space planning and sustainable development in China. Thus, spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and influence factor analyses are vital. Laiwu, China, was selected as the study area due to its complex terrain and development history. A multitemporal land-use and land-cover classification extracted from Landsat remote-sensing images for 2001–2018 and the self-organizing map method were combined to identify the area's multitemporal PLES. The PLES evolution trajectories were extracted based on the multitemporal PLES. The main factors influencing the PLES spatiotemporal evolution differences were revealed using the random-forest-based factor importance evaluation method. The results showed that changes in the PLES trajectories occupied ∼ 18% of the study area. The ecological space recovery type was mainly observed in previously stable ecological space areas. Changes in the production space expansion (PSE) and living space expansion were mainly agglomerated in the fringe areas of previously stable production–ecological and living space lands. Distance from early built-up areas was the main factor influencing PLES expansion. Ecological space was mainly distributed far away from built-up areas, and living and production spaces were mainly distributed near the built-up areas. Additionally, the slope of the terrain affected the spatial distribution of PLES expansion to a certain extent, and the gross domestic product clearly affected the distribution of PSE. Falls detection approaches struggle with both Big Data scalability and upholding individual privacy, this research work proposed a novel approach for posture recognition followed by fall detection, taking advantage of the synergy between Random Forests and Uniform Local Binary Patterns (uLBP) histograms for an accurate and fast posture identification while respecting privacy. Additionally, it referred to deep recurrent neural networks distributed on a Hadoop and Spark platform for time series analysis in fall detection. This combination of methods allowed us to achieve acceptable real-time monitoring precision. This study, therefore addressed two objectives simultaneously: efficiency and scalability in posture recognition using Random Forests and uLBP, and fall detection relying on the recurrent neural network (RNN) for time series processing. The suggested solution is designed for home telemonitoring, where scalability and effective data management are supported through Hadoop/Spark. The integration of these technologies promotes reliable detection without any privacy violation, paving the way for a wider adoption of home monitoring systems for an increasing population of dependent individuals. Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that poses a substantial economic burden. The Random forest algorithm is effective in predicting AD; however, the key factors influencing AD onset remain unclear. This study aimed to analyze the key lipoprotein and metabolite factors influencing AD onset using machine-learning methods. It provides new insights for researchers and medical personnel to understand AD and provides a reference for the early diagnosis, treatment, and early prevention of AD. Methods: A total of 603 participants, including controls and patients with AD with complete lipoprotein and metabolite data from the Alzheimer's disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database between 2005 and 2016, were enrolled. Random forest, Lasso regression, and CatBoost algorithms were employed to rank and filter 213 lipoprotein and metabolite variables. Variables with consistently high importance rankings from any two methods were incorporated into the models. Finally, the variables selected from the three methods, with the participants' age, sex, and marital status, were used to construct a random forest predictive model. Results: Fourteen lipoprotein and metabolite variables were screened using the three methods, and 17 variables were included in the AD prediction model based on age, sex, and marital status of the participants. The optimal random forest modeling was constructed with "mtry" set to 3 and "ntree" set to 300. The model exhibited an accuracy of 71.01%, a sensitivity of 79.59%, a specificity of 65.28%, and an AUC (95%CI) of 0.724 (0.645–0.804). When Mean Decrease Accuracy and Gini were used to rank the proteins, age, phospholipids to total lipids ratio in intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL_PL_PCT), and creatinine were among the top five variables. Conclusions: Age, IDL_PL_PCT, and creatinine levels play crucial roles in AD onset. Background and objectives: Urban scenic forests are a main component of forest parks, and a quantitative study of the landscape color of urban scenic forests can provide a scientific reference for the planning of forest parks and the design of scenic forest management measures. The purpose of the study is to find the quantitative correlation between autumn landscape color and ecological service functions and to obtain the important influencing factors. Materials and methods: This study focuses on Purple Mountain National Forest Park in Nanjing as a case study area and uses forest resource survey data from Purple Mountain National Forest Park in 2020, autumn landscape color photograph data from Purple Mountain National Forest Park in 2020, and digital elevation model data as the main information sources. The correlation between two ecological functions of above-ground biomass (AGB), tree species diversity (TSD), and influencing factors (including color factors, stand factors, and terrain factors) were both analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis. Then, multiple linear regression (MLR) and random forest (RF) methods were used to perform the quantitative relationship between the functions. Results: The results show that, in the established quantitative models of AGB, with TSD as the dependent variable, the correlation coefficients of the MLR model are both above 0.784, while the correlation coefficients of the RF model are all above 0.872. Moreover, the brightness value of the main color (BRI), the number of yellow-green blocks (NYG), and the number of yellow blocks (NY) have important effects on the two ecological service functions. Conclusion: In conclusion, there are complex non-linear relationships between the ecological service functions of AGB, TSD, and influencing factors, and the landscape color can reflect the ecological function of the scenic forest to some extent. In addition, stand factors and color factors have important effects on the ecological function of AGB. Color factors and terrain factors have important effects on the ecological function of TSD. BRI, NYG, and NY have important effects on the two ecological functions. Drought is one of the most frequent types of natural disasters in the world, and it has been classified into several different categories. Generally, meteorological drought is considered to be the beginning of a drought disaster, while socio-economic drought is the possible ultimate result. However, controversy remains around the main impact factors in the propagation from meteorological drought to socio-economic drought over the past decades. In this study, a comprehensive investigation of the 2022 drought event in the city of Lishui, China was conducted to build a model for analyzing the main impact factors in the propagation from meteorological drought to socio-economic drought. The results showed that the 2022 drought event had a great impact on the city's socio-economic activities. According to governmental reports on socio-economic drought and basic information on water sources, a random forest attribution analysis model was built. The model demonstrated a great performance in distinguishing whether a socio-economic drought had occurred, with an accuracy of 0.9935, a true positive rate of 0.9489 and a false positive rate of 0.0021. Additionally, the variables related to water sources—including drainage area, covered population and daily water supply volume—were found to be more important than the other variables related to meteorological conditions in the model, meaning that the capacity of water sources is the main impact factor in the propagation between meteorological drought and socio-economic drought. Summary: The Internet is connected with everyone for sharing and monitoring digital information. However, securing network resources from malicious activities is critical for several applications. Numerous studies have recently used deep learning‐based models in detecting intrusions and received relatively robust recognition outcomes. Nevertheless, most investigations have operated old datasets, so they could not detect the most delinquent attack information. Therefore, the current research proposes the long short‐term memory (LSTM)‐based near real‐time multiclass network intrusion detection system (NIDS) utilizing complex cloud CSE‐CICIDSS2018 datasets to secure and detect the network anomalous. The proposed strategy utilizes a random forest algorithm for dimensionality reduction and feature selection. In addition, the selected best suitable features were used in a deep learning‐based LSTM model developed for detecting network intrusions. The experimental outcomes reveal that the presented LSTM model obtained 99.66% testing accuracy with 0.12% loss. Summary: Software defined network (SDN) has emerged as a new paradigm in terms of network architecture, providing flexibility, agility, and programmability to network management. These benefits boosted the SDN adoption, bringing new challenges mainly related to security, in particular, those related to Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The detection, prevention, and mitigation of these attacks are important since they can affect the entire network. Many current security measures use statistical techniques, as entropy, or machine learning (ML) algorithms to detect DoS and DDoS attacks. While the definition of a threshold to determine whether a traffic is an attack is not trivial in statistical techniques, ML solutions may provide better accuracy but require considerable computational resources and time to converge to a model able to detect these attacks. Trying to circumvent these limitations, current hybrid approaches either use the results from entropy as input in ML algorithms (Entropy→$$ \to $$ML) or use entropy as a filter and ML algorithms to identify attacks. This work goes one step ahead and combines these techniques in a three‐step approach (Entropy→$$ \to $$ML→$$ \to $$Entropy), called ML‐Entropy, which inherits the intelligence of ML algorithms to adjust the threshold used by entropy. The proposed solution was implemented and evaluated in two datasets, the well‐known synthetic DARPA dataset and a dataset composed by traffic collected from a real‐corporate environment. Experimental results show that, in general, ML‐Entropy presents an accuracy above 99%, similar to support vector machine (SVC) and random forest (RF) algorithms, being able to converge to a detection model up to 192,771×$$ 192,771\times $$ and 137,924×$$ 137,924\times $$ faster than RF and SVC, respectively. Introduction: An increasing number of studies have demonstrated the pivotal role of microbiota changes in the onset, progression, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). However, a comprehensive analysis of intratumoral microbiome variation across distinct LUAD stages has not been performed. The aim of this study was to identify the microbial markers that significantly vary during tumor stage of LUAD. Methods: Here, we used the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) database to comprehensively compare and analyze the differences in microbial composition between 267 patients with early and 224 patients with advanced LUAD. In order to determine the best biomarkers, we used the random forest (RF) model and found that the microbial markers have a certain ability in predicting the stage of LUAD. Results: We found that there were certain differences in the microbiome of patients with LUAD at different stages, especially in the tumor tissues of patients with advanced LUAD, whose co-abundance network was significantly more complex. We also found that five bacterial biomarkers (Pseudoalteromonas, Luteibacter, Caldicellulosiruptor, Loktanella, and Serratia) were correlated with LUAD stage, among which Pseudoalteromonas, Luteibacter, Caldicellulosiruptor, and Serratia were significantly overexpressed in patients with advanced LUAD. In particular, after integrating the biomarkers of mRNA, we achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.70. Discussion: Our study revealed the microbial profile of patients with LUAD and the intrinsic pathogenic mechanism between the microbiome and the disease, and established a multi-omics model to determine LUAD tumor stage. The goal is to enhance an automated sleep staging system's performance by leveraging the diverse signals captured through multi-modal polysomnography recordings. Three modalities of PSG signals, namely electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), and electromyogram (EMG), were considered to obtain the optimal fusions of the PSG signals, where 63 features were extracted. These include frequency-based, time-based, statistical-based, entropy-based, and non-linear-based features. We adopted the ReliefF (ReF) feature selection algorithms to find the suitable parts for each signal and superposition of PSG signals. Twelve top features were selected while correlated with the extracted feature sets' sleep stages. The selected features were fed into the AdaBoost with Random Forest (ADB + RF) classifier to validate the chosen segments and classify the sleep stages. This study's experiments were investigated by obtaining two testing schemes: epoch-wise testing and subject-wise testing. The suggested research was conducted using three publicly available datasets: ISRUC-Sleep subgroup1 (ISRUC-SG1), sleep-EDF(S-EDF), Physio bank CAP sleep database (PB-CAPSDB), and S-EDF-78 respectively. Quaking aspen is an important deciduous tree species across interior western U.S. forests. Existing maps of aspen distribution are based on Landsat imagery and often miss small stands (<0.09 ha or 30 m2), which rapidly regrow when managed or following disturbance. In this study, we present methods for deriving a new regional map of aspen forests using one year of Sentinel-1 (S1) and Sentinel-2 (S2) imagery in Google Earth Engine. Using observed annual phenology of aspen across the Southern Rockies and leveraging the frequent temporal resolution of S1 and S2, ecologically relevant seasonal imagery composites were developed. We derived spectral indices and radar textural features targeting the canopy structure, moisture, and chlorophyll content. Using spatial block cross-validation and Random Forests, we assessed the accuracy of different scenarios and selected the best-performing set of features for classification. Comparisons were then made with existing landcover products across the study region. The resulting map improves on existing products in both accuracy (0.93 average F1-score) and detection of smaller forest patches. Soil organic carbon (SOC) measurements are an indicator of soil health and an important parameter for the study of land-atmosphere carbon fluxes. Field sampling provides precise measurements at the sample location but entails high costs and cannot provide detailed maps unless the sampling density is very high. Remote sensing offers the possibility to quantify SOC over large areas in a cost-effective way. As a result, numerous studies have sought to quantify SOC using Earth observation data with a focus on inter-field or regional distributions. This study took a different angle and aimed to map the spatial distribution of SOC at the intra-field scale, since this distribution provides important insights into the biophysiochemical processes involved in the retention of SOC. Instead of solely using spectral measurements to quantify SOC, topographic and spectral features act as predictor variables. The necessary data on study fields in South-East England was acquired through a detailed SOC sampling campaign, including a LiDAR survey flight. Multi-spectral Sentinel-2 data of the study fields were acquired for the exact day of the sampling campaign, and for an interval of 18 months before and after this date. Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) models were trained and tested on the spectral and topographical data of the fields to predict the observed SOC values. Five different sets of model predictors were assessed, by using independently and in combination, single and multidate spectral data, and topographical features for the SOC sampling points. Both, RF and SVR models performed best when trained on multi-temporal Sentinel-2 data together with topographic features, achieving validation root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of 0.29% and 0.23% SOC, respectively. These RMSEs are competitive when compared with those found in the literature for similar models. The topographic wetness index (TWI) exhibited the highest permutation importance for virtually all models. Given that farming practices within each field are the same, this result suggests an important role of soil moisture in SOC retention. Contrary to findings in dryer climates or in studies encompassing larger areas, TWI was negatively related to SOC levels in the study fields, suggesting a different role of soil wetness in the SOC storage in climates characterized by excess rainfall and poorly drained soils. This study addresses a crucial gap in understanding the impact of urban morphologies on the canopy urban heat islands (CUHI) effect. The selection of reference stations lacks a unified standard, and their surface air temperature (SAT) sequences are also inevitably influenced by urbanization. However, synchronous observational data from relocated meteorological stations could provide high-quality sample data for studying CUHI. Utilizing remote sensing techniques, the findings of this paper revealed that the observation environment of stations after relocation exhibited remarkable representativeness, with their observation sequences accurately reflecting the local climatic background. The differences in synchronized observation sequences could characterize the CUHI intensity (CUHII). Among the various factors, land use parameters and landscape parameters played particularly significant roles. Furthermore, the fitting performance of the random forest (RF) model for both training and testing data was significantly superior to that of the linear model and support vector regression (SVR) model. Additionally, the influence of local circulation on CUHI could not be overlooked. In this work, we used the convolutional neural network (CNN) method to invert sea surface height (SSH) from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) delayed Doppler map (DDM) data during 2009–2017 and compared the CNN inversion data with those obtained from traditional simple random forest (RF) method. SSH observations from the OSTM/Jason-2 satellite were used to judge the merits of the two methods. The results show that both methods yield good SSH inversion results, but when the training set is 9000, the root mean square errors of the SSH inversion results based on the CNN and the RF method are 16.78 and 15.96 respectively; as the training set increases above 9000, the accuracy of the CNN method is significantly better than that of the RF method. Red-light running (RLR) is one of the riskiest behaviors at signalized intersections. This study utilizes intersection- and corridor-level characteristics to identify variables that impact the frequency and severity of RLR violations. The severity of RLR is defined based on the time when the violations happened. That is, less severe violations are the ones that occur within 3 seconds of the signal light turning red (RLR3), while more severe violations happen between 3 and 10 seconds of the signal light turning red (RLR10). Results of the zero-inflated negative binomial model showed that an increase in intersection delay and split failure increases the frequency of both types of RLR severities. An increase in the yellow interval, cycle length, and number of lanes reduces the frequency of RLR3 but increases the frequency of RLR10. Furthermore, based on the factor importance analysis conducted through the random forest, it was shown that split failure is one of the most predictive variables for RLR3 and RLR10. The findings of this research could help transportation agencies in different geographic jurisdictions utilize the calibrated models to understand the impact of varying intersection- and corridor-based characteristics on the frequency and severity of RLR. • Our random forest quantitative EEG (qEEG) classifier could classify delirium versus no delirium with an AUC of 0.76. • The most important delirium classification features were: theta peak frequency, relative alpha power and theta autocorrelation. • There was no evidence that qEEG features differed between postoperative and non-postoperative delirium. This exploratory study examined quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) changes in delirium and the use of qEEG features to distinguish postoperative from non-postoperative delirium. This project was part of the DeltaStudy, a cross-sectional, multicenter study in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and non-ICU wards. Single-channel (Fp2-Pz) four-minutes resting-state EEG was analyzed in 456 patients. After calculating 98 qEEG features per epoch, random forest (RF) classification was used to analyze qEEG changes in delirium and to test whether postoperative and non-postoperative delirium could be distinguished. An area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.76 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.71–0.80) was found when classifying delirium with a sensitivity of 0.77 and a specificity of 0.63 at the optimal operating point. The classification of postoperative versus non-postoperative delirium resulted in an AUC of 0.50 (95%CI 0.38–0.61). RF classification was able to discriminate delirium from no delirium with reasonable accuracy, while also identifying new delirium qEEG markers like autocorrelation and theta peak frequency. RF classification could not distinguish postoperative from non-postoperative delirium. Single-channel EEG differentiates between delirium and no delirium with reasonable accuracy. The compressive strength (CS) of crumb rubber concrete (CRC) can be improved through a chemical pretreatment involving immersion of the crumb rubber particles in a NaOH solution. Despite the potential benefits of this treatment, accurately estimating the CS value of NaOH-pretreated CRC remains challenging. To address this issue, a comprehensive database encompassing 118 entries on the fundamental mixtures of CRC along with NaOH concentration and pretreatment duration has been meticulously compiled for machine learning analysis. The random forest (RF) algorithm is employed to predict the 28-day CS value of NaOH-pretreated CRC. The model hyperparameters are optimized using a random search technique with 10-fold cross-validation. The findings reveal that the optimized RF attains acceptable predictive performance, yielding RMSE, MAE, and R2 values of 3.83 MPa, 2.84 MPa, and 0.85, respectively, on the testing dataset. Additionally, the model is interpreted using multiple techniques, including permutation importance, RF model-based feature importance, and Shapley additive explanation from global or local perspectives. The feature importance analyses consistently highlight the crucial role of crumb rubber content in determining the 28-day CS value of NaOH-pretreated CRC, and the influence of NaOH concentration and pretreatment time appear relatively inconsequential compared to features associated with the CRC mixture. Background: A lack of consensus exists in linking demographic, behavioral, and cognitive characteristics to biological stages of dementia, defined by the ATN (amyloid, tau, neurodegeneration) classification incorporating amyloid, tau, and neuronal injury biomarkers. Methods: Using a random forest classifier we investigated whether 27 demographic, behavioral, and cognitive characteristics allowed distinction between ATN‐defined groups with the same cognitive profile. This was done separately for three cognitively unimpaired (CU) (112 A‐T‐N‐; 46 A+T+N+/−; 65 A‐T+/‐N+/−) and three mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (128 A‐T‐N‐; 223 A+T+N+/−; 94 A‐T+/‐N+/−) subgroups. Results: Classification‐balanced accuracy reached 39% for the CU and 52% for the MCI subgroups. Logical Delayed Recall (explaining 16% of the variance), followed by the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale 13 (14%) and Everyday Cognition Informant (10%), were the most relevant characteristics for classification of the MCI subgroups. Race and ethnicity, marital status, and Everyday Cognition Patient were not relevant (0%). Conclusions: The demographic, behavioral, and cognitive measures used in our model were not informative in differentiating ATN‐defined CU profiles. Measures of delayed memory, general cognition, and activities of daily living were the most informative in differentiating ATN‐defined MCI profiles; however, these measures alone were not sufficient to reach high classification performance. Tree cover is a crucial vegetation structural parameter for simulating ecological, hydrological, and soil erosion processes on the Chinese Loess Plateau, especially after the implementation of the Grain for Green project in 1999. However, current tree cover products performed poorly across most of the Loess Plateau, which is characterized by grasslands with sparse trees. In this study, we first acquired high-accuracy samples of 0.5 m tree canopy and 30 m tree cover using a combination of unmanned aerial vehicle imagery and WorldView-2 (WV-2) imagery. The spectral and textural features derived from Landsat 8 and WV-2 were then used to estimate tree cover with a random forest model. Finally, the tree cover estimated using WV-2, Landsat 8, and their combination were compared, and the optimal tree cover estimates were also compared with current products and tree cover derived from canopy classification. The results show that (1) the normalized difference moisture index using Landsat 8 shortwave infrared and the standard deviation of correlation metric calculated by means of gray-level co-occurrence matrix using the WV-2 near-infrared band are the optimal spectral feature and textural feature for estimating tree cover, respectively. (2) The accuracy of tree cover estimated using only WV-2 is highest (RMSE = 7.44%), indicating that high-resolution textural features are more sensitive to tree cover than the Landsat spectral features (RMSE = 11.53%) on grasslands with sparse trees. (3) Textural features with a resolution higher than 8 m perform better than the combination of Landsat 8 and textural features, and the optimal resolution is 2 m (RMSE = 7.21%) for estimating tree cover, whereas the opposite is observed when the resolution of textural features is lower than 8 m. (4) The current global product seriously underestimates tree cover on the Loess Plateau, and the tree cover calculation using the canopy classification of high-resolution imagery performs worse than the method of directly using remote sensing features. This study presents an approach to forecast outbreaks of Dendrolimus sibiricus, a significant pest affecting taiga ecosystems. Leveraging comprehensive datasets encompassing climatic variables and forest attributes from 15,000 taiga parcels in the Krasnoyarsk Krai region, we employ genetic programming-based predictive modeling. Our methodology utilizes Random Forest algorithm to develop robust forecasting model through integrated data analysis techniques. By optimizing hyperparameters within the predictive model, we achieved heightened accuracy, reaching a maximum precision of 0.9941 in forecasting pest outbreaks up to one year in advance. Among the most active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, mixed metal oxides based on Ni, Fe, and Co metals are recognized as economical yet excellent replacements for RuO2 and IrOx. However, tuning and searching for optimal compositions of multi–element–compound electrocatalysts is a big challenge in catalysis research. Conventional materials screening experiments and theoretical simulations are labor–intensive and time–consuming. Machine learning offers a promising paradigm for accelerating electrocatalyst research and simultaneously understanding composition–activity correlation. Herein, we introduce an Explainable AI (XAI) framework for predicting the electrocatalytic performance of OER catalysts. By integrating the robust Random Forest (RF) model for machine learning with the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method for model explanation, we achieved accurate predictions of the overpotential for various compositions of (Ni−Fe−Co−Ce)Ox catalysts (R2=0.8221). More importantly, we obtained valuable insights into how each metal and their interactions influence the overpotential of the catalysts. Our results highlight the versatility of the RF model with SHAP in identifying the optimal composition of (Ni−Fe−Co−Ce)Ox catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution, showing its potential applicability across various catalyst synthesis methods. Low-cost gas sensors (LCS) often produce inaccurate measurements due to varying environmental conditions that are not consistent with laboratory settings, leading to inadequate productivity levels compared to high-quality sensors. To address this issue, we propose the use of Machine Learning (ML) to predict accurate concentrations of pollutant gases acquired by LCS integrated into an embedded Internet of Things platform. However, a key challenge is to optimize an accurate ML design under low memory and computation power constraints of microcontrollers (MCUs) while maintaining accurate ML scores. After data analysis and pre-processing, we assess and analyze the performance of five ML algorithms to predict the concentration of pollutants gases from multiple specifications (weather, presence of other gases, etc.). To support the experiments, datasets from three sources are used: (1) VOCSens, (2) Belgian Interregional Environment Agency cell, and (3) Visual-Crossing. Once the best model was optimized and validated, multiple hard constraints were added to the selected ML structure to satisfy material and expert requirements. Trained models were ported to be implemented locally in a MCU after comparing several porting libraries. The assembled code obtained is evaluated based on two metrics: storage memory consumption and inference time, relative to the highest attainable capacities. The improved random forest is the best ML model for the used dataset with an R2 score meeting of 0.72 and Root Means Square Error of 0.0028 ppm. The best generated Tiny-ML model needs 3% of RAM and 98% of Flash storage. The empirical results prove that the developed ML algorithm applied to LCS provides high accuracy to predict pollutant gases. As the global demand for renewable energy grows, solar energy is gaining attention as a clean, sustainable energy source. Accurate assessment of solar energy resources is crucial for the siting and design of photovoltaic power plants. This study proposes an integrated deep learning-based photovoltaic resource assessment method. Ensemble learning and deep learning methods are fused for photovoltaic resource assessment for the first time. The proposed method combines the random forest, gated recurrent unit, and long short-term memory to effectively improve the accuracy and reliability of photovoltaic resource assessment. The proposed method has strong adaptability and high accuracy even in the photovoltaic resource assessment of complex terrain and landscape. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the comparison algorithm in all evaluation indexes, indicating that the proposed method has higher accuracy and reliability in photovoltaic resource assessment with improved generalization performance traditional single algorithm. Traffic congestion is a significant issue in cities, impacting the environment, commuters, and the economy. Predicting congestion is crucial for efficient network operation, but high-quality data and computational techniques are challenging for scientists and engineers. The revolution of data mining and machine learning has enabled the development of effective prediction methods. Machine learning (ML) approaches have shown potential in predicting traffic congestion, with classification being a key area of study. Open-source software tools WEKA and Orange are used to predict and classify traffic congestion. However, there is no single best strategy for every situation. This study compared the effectiveness of both data mining tools for predicting congestion in one of the areas of the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Amman, by testing several classifiers including support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), logistic regression (LR), and random forest (RF) classifications. The results showed that the Orange mining tool was superior in predicting traffic congestion, with a prediction accuracy of 100% for Random forest, logistic regression, and 99.8% for KNN. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to address the dynamic prediction of customer activity in electronic payment transactions for individual clients. Our approach is founded on customer online payment transaction records from registered UK-based online retailers between 01/12/2009 and 09/12/2011. These retailers primarily specialize in unique gift items for various occasions, catering to a wide range of clients, including wholesalers. We used classification analysis based on the correlation coefficient to measure and describe a customer's electronic payment capability based on the quality of products they purchase. Furthermore, we trained multi-layered models (linear model, deep learning, random forest, and support vector machines (SVM)) to capture the dynamics of e-bank transaction reinforcement for retail customers using machine learning. An electrical power system is a network that facilitates the sourcing, transfer, and distribution of electrical energy. In the traditional power system, there are eleven types of faults that can occur in the system. This paper focuses on the classification of these faults over a stretch of 100 kilometres. The dataset used is synthetic and generated from a simulated model using MATLAB/Simulink software. Data augmentation is carried out during training to improve the accuracy of the classification. An indirect training approach through generative adversarial network (GAN) is used to classify these overhead transmission line faults. The random forest (RF) classification is used as the base learning model on the original dataset and it achieves accuracy of 84%. However, the base learner RF when used on GAN model generated augmented faulty data, it performs exceptionally well achieving 99% accuracy. Background: New patient referrals are often processed by practice coordinators with little‐to‐no medical background. Treatment delays due to incorrect referral processing, however, have detrimental consequences. Identifying variables that are associated with a higher likelihood of surgical oncological resection may improve patient referral processing and expedite the time to treatment. The study objective is to develop a supervised machine learning (ML) platform that identifies relevant variables associated with head and neck surgical resection. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 64 222 patient datapoints from the SEER database. Results: The random forest ML model correctly classified patients who were offered head and neck surgery with an 81% accuracy rate. The sensitivity and specificity rates were 86% and 71%. The positive and negative predictive values were 85% and 73%. Conclusions: ML modeling accurately predicts head and neck cancer surgery recommendations based on patient and cancer information from a large population‐based dataset. Assessment of the spatial distribution of potential pathways of sediment transport and the degree of linkage between sediment sources and the channel network within a watershed represents a valuable analysis for informing management decisions on sediment yield and transfer. Given the limitations of conventional methods for determining index of sediment connectivity (IC), there is a need to provide a flexible and efficient approach with the ability to apply different factors. In this regard, five decision tree-based machine learning models: M5 prime (M5P), random tree (RT), random forest (RF), alternating model tree (AMT), and reduced error pruning tree (REPT) were tested using geomorphic and climatic factors. Two databases were constructed with 200 and 1600 classes at 50 watersheds in Queensland, Australia. In these models, IC was assessed as an output parameter and six attributes that affect IC were assigned as input parameters (i.e., elevation, slope, area, length of stream channel, normalized difference vegetation index, and rainfall). Statistical validation and comparison of model predictions with calculated IC values based on the approach of Borselli et al. (Catena 75:268–277, 2008) were performed. Based on the statistical criteria, the RF model produced the most robust estimations of IC compared to other models and performed very well for IC modelling, especially in smaller subsections of watersheds. Human activity and climate change are degrading the environmentally fragile Loess Plateau in dry and semiarid regions. Land deterioration threatens human and ecological existence. To prevent additional land degradation and ensure the ecological development and quality of arable land in the region, China launched "Grain for Green" in the late 1990s. This effort greatly boosted Loess Plateau vegetation. However, land degradation is complex, and so we must also examine natural and social variables to prevent additional degradation. Thus, this study presents a comprehensive index system to quantify land degradation on the Loess Plateau and uses machine learning to anticipate high‐risk locations. The project improved land degradation, and the spatial distribution of degradation risk is high in the northern and low in the eastern and southern regions of the Plateau. Gross Domestic Product and population density are the main drivers of land degradation. Industrialization and urbanization have raised the risk of land degradation, which now accounts for 1%–2% of the area. This study emphasizes sustainable land management in the Loess Plateau, a critical area for sustainable development in China. The integrated assessment indicator system and random forest modeling machine learning help grasp the current status and future preventive measures. The outcome of this study advances the Loess Plateau land degradation research and sustainable land management. Land use and land cover (LULC) analysis is crucial for understanding societal development and assessing changes during the Anthropocene era. Conventional LULC mapping faces challenges in capturing changes under cloud cover and limited ground truth data. To enhance the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the descriptions of LULC changes, this investigation employed a combination of advanced techniques. Specifically, multitemporal 30 m resolution Landsat-8 satellite imagery was utilized, in addition to the cloud computing capabilities of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Additionally, the study incorporated the random forest (RF) algorithm. This study aimed to generate continuous LULC maps for 2014 and 2020 for the Shrirampur area of Maharashtra, India. A novel multiple composite RF approach based on LULC classification was utilized to generate the final LULC classification maps utilizing the RF-50 and RF-100 tree models. Both RF models utilized seven input bands (B1 to B7) as the dataset for LULC classification. By incorporating these bands, the models were able to influence the spectral information captured by each band to classify the LULC categories accurately. The inclusion of multiple bands enhanced the discrimination capabilities of the classifiers, increasing the comprehensiveness of the assessment of the LULC classes. The analysis indicated that RF-100 exhibited higher training and validation/testing accuracy for 2014 and 2020 (0.99 and 0.79/0.80, respectively). The study further revealed that agricultural land, built-up land, and water bodies have changed adequately and have undergone substantial variation among the LULC classes in the study area. Overall, this research provides novel insights into the application of machine learning (ML) models for LULC mapping and emphasizes the importance of selecting the optimal tree combination for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of LULC maps based on the GEE and different RF tree models. The present investigation further enabled the interpretation of pixel-level LULC interactions while improving image classification accuracy and suggested the best models for the classification of LULC maps through the identification of changes in LULC classes. Background: Cardiovascular disorders (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs), such as Bangladesh, are also affected by several types of CVDs, such as heart failure and stroke. The leading cause of death in Bangladesh has recently switched from severe infections and parasitic illnesses to CVDs. Materials and methods: The study dataset comprised a random sample of 391 CVD patients' medical records collected between August 2022 and April 2023 using simple random sampling. Moreover, 260 data points were collected from individuals with no CVD problems for comparison purposes. Crosstabs and chi-square tests were used to determine the association between CVD and the explanatory variables. Logistic regression, Naïve Bayes classifier, Decision Tree, AdaBoost classifier, Random Forest, Bagging Tree, and Ensemble learning classifiers were used to predict CVD. The performance evaluations encompassed accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operator characteristic (AU-ROC) curve. Results: Random Forest had the highest precision among the five techniques considered. The precision rates for the mentioned classifiers are as follows: Logistic Regression (93.67%), Naïve Bayes (94.87%), Decision Tree (96.1%), AdaBoost (94.94%), Random Forest (96.15%), and Bagging Tree (94.87%). The Random Forest classifier maintains the highest balance between correct and incorrect predictions. With 98.04% accuracy, the Random Forest classifier achieved the best precision (96.15%), robust recall (100%), and high F1 score (97.7%). In contrast, the Logistic Regression model achieved the lowest accuracy of 95.42%. Remarkably, the Random Forest classifier achieved the highest AUC value (0.989). Conclusion: This research mainly focused on identifying factors that are critical in impacting patients with CVD and predicting CVD risk. It is strongly advised that the Random Forest technique be implemented in a system for predicting cardiac diseases. This study used artificial intelligence techniques to identify clinical cancer biomarkers for recurrent gastric cancer survivors. From a hospital-based cancer registry database in Taiwan, the datasets of the incidence of recurrence and clinical risk features were included in 2476 gastric cancer survivors. We benchmarked Random Forest using MLP, C4.5, AdaBoost, and Bagging algorithms on metrics and leveraged the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) for imbalanced dataset issues, cost-sensitive learning for risk assessment, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) for feature importance analysis in this study. Our proposed Random Forest outperformed the other models with an accuracy of 87.9%, a recall rate of 90.5%, an accuracy rate of 86%, and an F1 of 88.2% on the recurrent category by a 10-fold cross-validation in a balanced dataset. We identified clinical features of recurrent gastric cancer, which are the top five features, stage, number of regional lymph node involvement, Helicobacter pylori, BMI (body mass index), and gender; these features significantly affect the prediction model's output and are worth paying attention to in the following causal effect analysis. Using an artificial intelligence model, the risk factors for recurrent gastric cancer could be identified and cost-effectively ranked according to their feature importance. Short-term load forecasting (STLF) plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and economical operation of power systems. Accurate load forecasting provides numerous benefits for power suppliers, such as cost reduction, increased reliability, and informed decision-making. However, STLF is a complex task due to various factors, including non-linear trends, multiple seasonality, variable variance, and significant random interruptions in electricity demand time series. To address these challenges, advanced techniques and models are required. This study focuses on the development of an efficient short-term power load forecasting model using the random forest (RF) algorithm. RF combines regression trees through bagging and random subspace techniques to improve prediction accuracy and reduce model variability. The algorithm constructs a forest of trees using bootstrap samples and selects random feature subsets at each node to enhance diversity. Hyperparameters such as the number of trees, minimum sample leaf size, and maximum features for each split are tuned to optimize forecasting results. The proposed model was tested using historical hourly load data from four transformer substations supplying different campus areas of the University of Beira Interior, Portugal. The training data were from January 2018 to December 2021, while the data from 2022 were used for testing. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the RF model in forecasting short-term hourly and one day ahead load and its potential to enhance decision-making processes in smart grid operations. Accurate mapping of forest habitats, especially in NATURA sites, is essential information for forest monitoring and sustainable management but also for habitat characterisation and ecosystem functioning. Remote sensing data and spatial modelling allow accurate mapping of the presence and distribution of tree species and habitats and are valuable tools for the long-term assessment of habitat status required by the European Commission. In order to serve the above, the present study aims to propose a methodology to accurately map the spatial distribution of forest habitats in three NATURA2000 sites of Cyprus by employing Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data as well as topographic features using the Google Earth Engine (GEE). A pivotal aspect of the methodology identified was that the best band combination of the Random Forest (RF) classifier achieves the highest performance for mapping the dominant habitats in the three case studies. Specifically, in the Akamas region, eight habitat types have been mapped, in Paphos nine and six in Troodos. These habitat types are included in three of the nine habitat groups based on the EU's Habitat Directive: the sclerophyllous scrub, rocky habitats and caves and forests. The results show that using the RF algorithm achieves the highest performance, especially using Dataset 6, which is based on S2 bands, spectral indices and topographical features, and Dataset 13, which includes S2, S1, spectral indices and topographical features. These datasets achieve an overall accuracy (OA) of approximately 91–94%. In contrast, Dataset 7, which includes only S1 bands and Dataset 9, which combines S1 bands and spectral indices, achieve the lowest performance with an OA of approximately 25–43%. Geological hazards in Xinxian County, Xinyang City, Henan Province, are characterized by their small scale, wide distribution, and significant influence from regional tectonics. This study focuses on collapses and landslide hazards within the area, selecting twelve evaluation factors: aspect, slope shape, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), topographic relief, distance from geological structure, slope, distance from roads, land use cover type, area of land change (2012–2022), average annual rainfall (2012–2022), and river network density. Utilizing data from historical disaster sites across the region, the information quantity method and hierarchical analysis method are employed to ascertain the information quantity and weight of each factor. Subsequently, a random forest model is applied to perform susceptibility zoning of geological hazards in Xinxian County and to examine the characteristics of these geological disasters. The results show that in the study area, the primary factors influencing the development of geohazards are the distance from roads, rock groups, and distance from geological structure areas. A comparison of the susceptibility results obtained through two methods, the analytic hierarchy process information quantity method and the random forests model, reveals that the former exhibits a higher accuracy. This model categorizes the geohazard susceptibility in the study area into four levels: low, medium, high, and very high. Notably, the areas of very high and high susceptibility together cover 559.17 km2, constituting 35.99% of the study area's total area, and encompass 57 disaster sites, which represent 72.15% of all disaster sites. Geological hazards in Xinxian County frequently manifest on steep canyon inclines, along the curved and concave banks of mountain rivers, within watershed regions, on gully inclines, atop steep cliffs, and on artificially created slopes, among other sites. Areas with very high and high vulnerability to these hazards are mainly concentrated near the county's geological formations. The gneiss formations are widely exposed in Xinxian County, and the gneisses' strength is significantly changed under weathering, which makes the properties of the different degrees of weathering of the rock and soil bodies play a decisive role in the stability of the slopes. This paper provides a basis for evaluating and preventing geologic hazards in the Dabie mountainous area of the South Henan Province, and the spatial planning of the national territory. The work presents a tool enabling the selection of powder for 3D printing. The project focused on three types of powders, such as steel, nickel- and cobalt-based and aluminum-based. An important aspect during the research was the possibility of obtaining the mechanical parameters. During the work, the possibility of using the selected algorithm based on artificial intelligence like Random Forest, Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbors, Fuzzy K-Nearest Neighbors, Gradient Boosting, XGBoost, AdaBoost was also checked. During the work, tests were carried out to check which algorithm would be best for use in the decision support system being developed. Cross-validation was used, as well as hyperparameter tuning using different evaluation sets. In both cases, the best model turned out to be Random Forest, whose F1 metric score is 98.66% for cross-validation and 99.10% after tuning on the test set. This model can be considered the most promising in solving this problem. The first result is a more accurate estimate of how the model will behave for new data, while the second model talks about possible improvement after optimization or possible overtraining to the parameters. The operational characteristics of freight shipment will significantly change after the implementation of Autonomous and Connected Trucks (ACT). This change will have a significant impact on freight mobility, transportation safety, and the sustainability of infrastructure. Truck platooning is an emerging truck configuration that is expected to become operational in the future due to the rapid advancements in connected vehicle technology and autonomous driving assistance. The platooning configuration enables trucks to be connected with themselves and the surrounding infrastructure. This arrangement has shown to be a promising solution to improve the vehicles' fuel efficiency, reduce carbon dioxide emission, reduce traffic congestion, and improve transportation service. However, platooning may accelerate the damage accumulation of pavement and bridge structures due to the formation of multiple load axles within each platoon since those structures were not designed for such loads. According to AASHTO, bridges are designed based on a notional live load model comprised of one or two trucks per lane in conjunction with or separate from an applied uniform load (AASHTO, LRFD 2022). This damage, if accumulated, its repair would require billions of dollars from the government and would impede the movement of both people and goods. The potential damage to infrastructure may arise due to various factors such as the number of trucks in a platoon, gap spacing between trucks, and the type of trucks. This research work includes a thorough parametric study with 295,200 computer simulations using SAP 2000. The goal was to evaluate the effect of different truck platooning configurations on the load rating of existing bridges. The obtained results served as the dataset for training various machine learning models, including Random Tree, Random Forest, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Regression (SVR), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). Results showed that Random Forest model performed the best, with the lowest prediction errors. This study aims to investigate the effects of different mapping unit scales and study area scales on the uncertainty rules of landslide susceptibility prediction (LSP). To illustrate various study area scales, Ganzhou City in China, its eastern region (Ganzhou East), and Ruijin County in Ganzhou East were chosen. Different mapping unit scales are represented by grid units with spatial resolution of 30 and 60 m, as well as slope units that were extracted by multi-scale segmentation method. The 3855 landslide locations and 21 typical environmental factors in Ganzhou City are first determined to create spatial datasets with input-outputs. Then, landslide susceptibility maps (LSMs) of Ganzhou City, Ganzhou East and Ruijin County are produced using a support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF), respectively. The LSMs of the above three regions are then extracted by mask from the LSM of Ganzhou City, along with the LSMs of Ruijin County from Ganzhou East. Additionally, LSMs of Ruijin at various mapping unit scales are generated in accordance. Accuracy and landslide susceptibility indexes (LSIs) distribution are used to express LSP uncertainties. The LSP uncertainties under grid units significantly decrease as study area scales decrease from Ganzhou City, Ganzhou East to Ruijin County, whereas those under slope units are less affected by study area scales. Of course, attentions should also be paid to the broader representativeness of large study areas. The LSP accuracy of slope units increases by about 6%–10% compared with those under grid units with 30 m and 60 m resolution in the same study area's scale. The significance of environmental factors exhibits an averaging trend as study area scale increases from small to large. The importance of environmental factors varies greatly with the 60 m grid unit, but it tends to be consistent to some extent in the 30 m grid unit and the slope unit. Highlights: Influences of study area scale and mapping unit scale on the LSP uncertainties are explored; LSP accuracy increases while uncertainty decreases from a large to a smaller area scale under grid units; LSP accuracy and uncertainty under slope units are less affected by study area scales; Importance of environmental factors shows an averaging trend from a small to a larger area scale; Slope units are shown to be superior to grid units for LSP modeling.
