This study presents metal concentrations (Fe, Mg, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Sr and V) and radionuclide activities ((40)K, (137)Cs, (210)Pb, (226)Ra, (228)Ac, (234)Th and (212)Pb) in surface deposits and a sediment core from the Sebou Estuary, Northwest Morocco. Samples were collected in April 2009, about 2 months after a flooding event, and analysed using a well-type coaxial gamma-ray detector and inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometry. Activities of radionuclides and concentrations of almost all elements in surface samples displayed only moderate spatial variation, suggesting homogenous deposition of eroded local soil in response to intense precipitation. Excess (210)Pb displayed relatively constant activity throughout the sediment core, preventing dating and precluding determination of the historical accumulation rates of pollutants at the core site. Some elements showed non-systematic trends with depth and displayed local maxima and minima. Other elements presented relatively systematic concentration trends or relatively constant levels with discrete maxima and/or minima. Except for Mn, Sr and Cr, all metal concentrations in sediment were below levels typical of polluted systems, suggesting little human impact or losses of metals from sediment particles.

Macroalgae species Codium sp, Bangia atropurpurea, Membranoptera alata, Plocamium cartilagineum, Dictyota dichotoma, Fucus spiralis and Stypocaulon scoparia were collected from seven stations along the north coast of Morocco. Samples were analysed to determine activities of naturally occurring radionuclides ((210)Pb, U isotopes and (40)K) and concentrations of metals (Zn, Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Mn, Pb, Cd, As and Cr) using radiometric and ICP-OES techniques, respectively. Metal concentrations were within ranges reported in the scientific literature, and concentrations of bio-essential elements were in the order Mn>Fe> Zn>Cu in all samples. Brown algae had the highest concentrations of almost all metals, and concentrations decreased in the order brown>red>green algae. With respect to radionuclides, the red alga P. cartilagineum had the highest activities of (210)Pb, in most cases an order of magnitude higher than for the green alga Codium sp. (234)U and (238)U activities in all algae samples were in the range 0.96- 7.61 and 1.16-6.14 Bq/kg dry weight, respectively. Our analyses of radionuclide activities and metal concentrations in marine macroalgae showed large differences among taxa. These results provide insights into which algal species should be used for biomonitoring programmes.

This study presents the first data on levels of natural radioactive elements in sediments from coastal ecosystems of the Republic of Congo. Sediment samples from five coastal sites were collected and analyzed by high-resolution gamma spectrometry for determination of activities of long-lived gamma-emitting radionuclides (234Th, 238U, 226Ra, 210Pb, 228Th, 228Ra, and 40 K). The specific activities were of the same order of magnitude as those measured in sediments of most countries neighboring the Republic of Congo. However, variations in activities were observed from one site to another and also from one sampling point to another within the same site without exceeding the global average reference values. It can be assumed, therefore, that no significant anthropogenic impact is perceptible in the study area. The most commonly used radiological hazard parameters, based mainly on 238U, 232Th, and 40 K activities, were assessed and the ERICA tool was applied to quantify the radiation exposure burden to human and biota resulting from radionuclides in sediments. Besides being useful for future monitoring efforts, the data produced in this work could be important for the worldwide database on radioactivity in the oceans and seas (MARIS) since no data are available in the Congolese marine environment. The present work aims to analyze the distribution of radionuclides naturally occurring in the oil shale of the Ama Fatma coastal zone. For this purpose, using gamma-ray spectrometry, we analyzed the activity concentrations of uranium (U), thorium (Th) series, and potassium-40 (K-40) in oil shale samples retrieved from the study area. The concentrations of U-238 ranged from 45 ± 36 to 194 ± 50 Bq.kg−1 and those of Th-232 fluctuated between 1.48 ± 0.92 and 9.47 ± 1.06 Bq.kg−1. The measured concentrations for Ra-226, Pb-214, and K-40 oscillated between 33 ± 5 and 138 ± 9 Bq.kg−1, 18 ± 1 and 68 ± 3 Bq.kg−1, and between 17 ± 4 and 279 ± 16 Bq.kg−1, respectively. The obtained values variation appears to be related to the deposit nature and assimilation processes of appropriate radionuclides rather than the retrieved samples' related depth. The analysis of 232Th/238U and 226Ra/238U allowed an understanding of these radionuclides' behaviors. The ratios 226Ra/238U ranged from 0.56 to 0.74 with a mean value of 0.70 which indicates the existence of disequilibrium in the investigated oil shale samples. Chemical analysis, grain size distribution and short-lived radionuclides (210Pb and 137Cs) were combined to investigate the sedimentary processes in the Oualidia lagoon. Grain size and major elements profiles indicate an unexpected change in the layers characterising 1978 and 1986. Sediment accumulation rates (SAR) depth profiles exhibited the same behaviour and revealed two different sediment deposition conditions or regimes, involving modification of this ecosystem equilibrium. The profiles of major elements behave vertically almost the same as SAR, and grain size distribution. The observed changes reflect modifications in sediments supply and ecosystem drivers due to the variation of hydrodynamics conditions, confinement phenomena located in the upstream zone of the lagoon and to the various anthropogenic activities around the Oualidia lagoon. In this work, we considered the concentrations of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides (namely the 40K, 210Pb, 226Ra, 137Cs, 234Th, 228Th and 228Ra) in sediments from Moroccan coast areas by considering estuaries (Sebou and Loukkos) and marine ecosystems (M'diq Bay and three Lagoons: Moulay Bousselham, Sidi Moussa and Oualidia). Sediment samples were analyzed using Gamma spectrometry. The objective was to establish radioactivity levels in Moroccan coastal areas as well as radiological risk assessment by using the ERICA tool. The software allows the estimation of dose rates to biota (a set of reference organisms by default). The highest activity concentrations were found in sediment samples of Sidi Moussa Lagoon, possibly due to the anthropogenic activities, while the lowest levels were reported in Sebou estuary, attributed most probably to a flooding event that occurred in the same year of sampling. Also, 210Pb and 40K have the most significant concentrations, while 137Cs has the lowest concentrations with a great resemblance with similar works. The World Wide Average concentration of 226Ra was exceeded in the three lagoons and that of 40K only exceeded at Sidi Moussa Lagoon. The application of ERICA tool allowed the assessment of total dose rates that are mainly due to internal exposure with strong contribution of 226Ra mainly for phytoplankton in the case of marine ecosystems and insect larvae, mollusc-bivalve, mollusc-gastropod and zooplankton for estuary ecosystems. The total dose rates were far lesser than the admissible dose rate proposed by ERICA tool (10 μGy h−1) and, therefore, unlikely to cause harmful effects to organisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface deposits and sediment cores were collected from the Upper Bonny Estuary, located in Southwest Nigeria, and analyzed to determine spatio-temporal and vertical distributions of radio-nuclide activities expressed in Bq·kg dry weight. The results of activities of naturally occurring radionuclides of Ra (15 ± 2-34 ± 3 Bq·kg), Ra (32 ± 5-48 ± 6 Bq·kg), K (264 ± 29-462 ± 36 Bq·kg) were found to be all within the range of typical values reported for coastal regions. Ratios of Ra to Ra suggested accretion for all samples with low sediment accumulation registered during rainy months. In addition, vertical distributions at the three sampling sites were also studied with the initial aim of establishing chronologies from the decay of excess Pb. In two cores, excess Pb, estimated by subtracting Ra from total Pb on a layer-by-layer basis, exhibit relatively constant activity with discrete minima and maxima. Therefore, these cores were excluded from radiometric dating. Only the third core could be dated by the constant rate of supply model, and Cs was utilized to validate the Pb chronology. Laboratories from 14 countries (with different levels of expertise in radionuclide measurements and 210Pb dating) participated in an interlaboratory comparison exercise (ILC) related to the application of 210Pb sediment dating technique within the framework of the IAEA Coordinated Research Project. The laboratories were provided with samples from a composite sediment core and were required to provide massic activities of several radionuclides and an age versus depth model from the obtained results, using the most suitable 210Pb dating model. Massic concentrations of Zn and Cu were also determined to be used for chronology validation. The ILC results indicated good analytical performances while the dating results didn't demonstrate the same degree of competence in part due to the different experience in dating of the participant laboratories. Uranium mining activities have contributed to the distribution and uptake of radionuclides, which have increased the active concentrations of natural radionuclides in environmental media, causing elevated human health risks. The present study aims to assess the spatial distribution characteristics of natural radionuclides in the surface soils and river sediments of the typical granite uranium mining area in South China, as well as investigate the geochemical features of natural radionuclides in the soil and sediments to understand their migration processes. The activity concentrations for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17–3925 Bq/kg, 50–1180 Bq/kg, 29–459 Bq/kg, and 240–1890 Bq/kg, respectively. The open-pit mining areas and tailings pond locations exhibited the highest concentrations of activity for all these radionuclides. This distribution points to an elevated potential health risk due to radiological exposure in these specific areas. Additionally, the values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) in those areas were higher than the limits recommended by ICRP (2021). 238U and 226Ra have a significant correlation (0.724), and the cluster analysis was showing a statistically meaningful cluster below 5 indicated that they have similar behavior during parent rock weathering and watershed erosion, and the distribution of 232Th and 40K were influenced by the addition of rock types. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, 238U/40K, and 226Ra/40K variation indicated that 40K more mobile than 226Ra and 238U, U(VI) was reduced to U(IV) by organic matter in the downstream area and re-entered into the sediment during the sediment surface runoff in the small watershed of the uranium ore open-pit mining area. On March 11, 2011, a serious radionuclide leakage accident occurred at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, and a large number of radionuclides were released, causing serious pollution to the ocean environment. On August 25, 2021, Japan announced the overall plan for the discharge of radioactive sewage from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean, and the discharge will begin around the spring of 2023. All operational and under-construction nuclear power plants in China are distributed in coastal areas presently. In case of a nuclear leakage accident, radionuclides will diffuse through the ocean and pollute the ecological environment. The study of radionuclide diffusion mechanism in the ocean and emergency response plays an important role in accident mitigation under oceanic radioactive events. A radionuclide diffusion model in the ocean was established and the radionuclide diffusion mechanism in the ocean was analyzed. And then a prediction and monitoring system of radionuclide diffusion in the ocean was proposed. The results show that the short-term radionuclide diffusion is mainly influenced by the source term, flow field and decay of 131I, and the degree of influence decreases in turn. On the whole, influences of the flow field and 131I decay are weakened during the long-term diffusion. At the same time, the influence of 137Cs decay begins to be obvious and the influence of suspended matter is increasing. The influence of ocean organisms is always small. Problems of scientific prediction and protection were analyzed, and the emergency response scheme was given. Dating recent sediment archives (< 150 years) constitutes a prerequisite for environmental and climatic reconstructions. Radiocaesium (137 Cs) emitted during thermonuclear bomb testing (∼ 1950–1980) and nuclear accidents and the decrease in excess lead-210 (210 Pb xs) with depth are often combined to establish sediment core chronology. Although these methods have been widely used during the last several decades, there is a lack of structured and comprehensive worldwide synthesis of fallout radionuclide analyses used for dating sediment cores in environmental and Earth sciences. The current literature overview was based on the compilation of 573 articles published between 1977 and 2020, reporting the collection of 1351 individual dating sediment cores (the dataset can be accessed at 10.1594/PANGAEA.931493; Foucher et al., 2021). This review was conducted in order to map the locations where 137 Cs fallout events were detected. These included the thermonuclear bomb testing peak in 1963, the Chernobyl accident in 1986, the Fukushima accident in 2011, and 24 additional events identified at 112 sites that led to local or regional radioactive releases (e.g., Sellafield accidents, Chinese nuclear tests). When 210 Pb xs records were used along with 137 Cs data, detailed information on the 210 Pb xs age–depth models were also synthesized. With the current growing number of studies analyzing sediment cores and the increasing interest in the deployment of sediment fingerprinting techniques including radionuclides as potential discriminant properties, this spatialized synthesis provides a unique worldwide compilation for characterizing fallout radionuclide sources and levels at the global scale. This synthesis provides in particular a reference of 137 Cs peak attribution for improving the sediment core dating, and it outlines the main questions that deserve attention in future research as well as the regions where additional 137 Cs fallout investigations should be conducted in priority. The concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K and gross α, β were measured in soils and sediments around a uranium tailings reservoir to analyze the distribution of radionuclides and evaluate radiation impacts. Results showed that the highest concentrations of 238U, 226Ra and 232Th occurred in the tailings sand, while the highest concentrations of 40K in the farmland. Nuclides concentrations and radioactivity levels decreased with distance away from the reservoir area. Moreover, the calculated gamma absorbed dose rates varied from 54 to 5369 nGy h−1 in study area. The average absorbed dose rate was approximately 52 times higher than the national average value in the tailings reservoir, but it reduced to about twice in the sediments downstream. Vertical variations of radionuclides, trace metals, and major elements were determined in two sediment cores, which were collected in the marine environment of Ierissos Gulf near Stratoni's mining area. The enrichment factors (EFs) were also estimated and provided moderately severe to extremely severe enrichment for most trace elements and Mn, describing the anthropogenic influence in the gulf during the previous century. According to the applied dating models based on 210Pb and 137Cs, the effect in the marine sediment due to the exploitation of pyrite for the production of sulfuric acid during 1912–1920 was observed. Additionally, the decrease of mining activity during 1935–1945 due to the Second World War and the type of ore exploitation, the alteration of the exploited ores, and the construction and operation of Olympiada's floatation plant during 1950–1970 were identified. A new 3D radioactivity transport model coupled with multiscale circulation and multi-fractional sediment transport modules is presented. The sediment transport module simulates the transport of a mixture of one cohesive sediment fraction and a number of fractions of non-cohesive sediments of different sizes and densities. The model of radionuclide transport describes the key transport and exchange processes in the system of water-suspended and bottom multi-fraction sediments. Two-step kinetics with two successive reversible fast and slow reactions is used in the model. A noticeable feature of the model is approximation of the sediment and contamination profiles in the bed by multiple well-mixed layers to describe the vertical migration of radioactivity within bottom sediments due to erosion/deposition, molecular diffusion and bioturbation. The model accurately reproduced a laboratory experiment on the uptake of radiocesium by lake sediments. An analytical solution describing mutual adjustment of the concentrations of radioactivity in the pore water and in the multi-fraction sediment showed that activity was redistributed between different fractions of sediments far slower than between water and the total concentration in the sediment. The extended one-layer model of bottom contamination of multi-fraction sediments was derived from a general model and compared with a multi-layer model. It was found, however, that the one-layer approximation was not capable of correctly predicting the inventory due to the fact that one-layer averaged concentration can essentially differ from the near-surface value in the multi-layer model. Radionuclide transport in channel with bottom depression was simulated to estimate the effects of erosion/deposition and the multi-fractionality of sediments on the transport process. It was shown that these factors affect the distribution of sediments by forming local maxima and minima of activity at the beginning and end of the depression, respectively, due to the redistribution of contaminated bottom sediments by flow. The levels and depth distributions of the natural radionuclides U, Th, Ra, K and the man-made Cs were analyzed by γ-ray spectrometry, while the concentrations of 26 chemical elements were measured by INAA in sediment samples collected from the organic mud layer that covers the Keratsini-Psitalia strait, Saronikos gulf (Greece). The average activity concentration values of Ra, Th and K were lower when compared, whereas that of U was comparable to the average Greek and world values. The elemental contamination of the sediments was estimated on the basis of the calculated EF values. The results revealed high EF values of As, Br, Cr, Ni, Sb, Se, Zn ranging from 160 for Br to 10 for Cr, whose main sources are probable related to contaminated sewage outfall from the area of Athens and the Piraeus Harbour. Mangroves are essential for protecting coastal environments and biodiversity; however few studies encompass the distribution of radionuclides in soils from these ecosystems. By applying high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, natural radionuclides were quantified in soils from the Chico Science Mangrove and Rio Formoso Mangrove (RFM), areas subjected to different human impacts. The activity concentrations of Ra and Ra were quite similar for the mangroves despite the differences found for K. Moreover, no correlation with the environmental impacts on the mangroves was observed, although RFM soil was K-enriched compared to deep sediments from other estuaries in the world. This is the first report on the inventory of radionuclides produced in 1.4 GeV proton induced reaction on Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) targets. LBE targets of 6 mm diameter and 1 to 8 mm lengths were irradiated with 1.4 GeV protons. The radionuclides ranging from Be (53.12 days) to Po (5.8 h) were identified in the samples with the help of time resolved γ-ray spectroscopy. However, there is no signature of formation of At radioisotopes, which can be produced by the interaction of secondary particles, typical for thick targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A review of information that can be provided from measurements made on natural and anthropogenic radionuclide activities in human skeletal remains has been undertaken to establish what reliable information of forensic anthropological use can be obtained regarding years of birth and death (and hence post-mortem interval (PMI)). Of the anthropogenic radionuclides that have entered the environment, radiocarbon (C) can currently be used to generate the most useful and reliable information. Measurements on single bones can indicate whether or not the person died during the nuclear era, while recent research suggests that measurements on trabecular bone may, depending on the chronological age of the remains, provide estimates of year of death and hence PMI. Additionally, C measurements made on different components of single teeth or on teeth formed at different times can provide estimates of year of birth to within 1-2 years of the true year. Of the other anthropogenic radionuclides, Sr shows some promise but there are problems of (1) variations in activities between individuals, (2) relatively large analytical uncertainties and (3) diagenetic contamination. With respect to natural series radionuclides, it is concluded that there is no convincing evidence that Pb dating can be used in a rigorous, quantitative fashion to establish a PMI. Similarly, for daughter/parent pairs such as Po/Pb (from the U decay series) and Th/Ra (from the Th decay series), the combination of analytical uncertainty and uncertainty in activity ratios at the point of death inevitably results in major uncertainty in any estimate of PMI. However, observation of the disequilibrium between these two daughter/parent pairs could potentially be used in a qualitative way to support other forensic evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial and natural radionuclides were determined in the Adriatic Sea in the seawater and sediment samples in the period from 2007 to 2011. The sampling areas were coastal waters of Slovenia, Croatia and Albania, together with the deepest part of the Adriatic in South Adriatic Pit and Otranto strait. Sampling locations were chosen to take into account all major geological and geographical features of this part of the Adriatic Sea and possible coastal influences. After initial sample preparation steps, samples were measured by gamma-ray spectrometry. In the seawater 40K activity concentrations were in the range from 6063 to 10519 Bq m−3, 137Cs from 1.6 to 3.8 Bq m−3, 226Ra from 23 to 31 Bq m−3, 228Ra from 1 to 25 Bq m−3 and 238U from 64 to 490 Bq m−3. The results of sediment samples showed that 40K was in the range from 87 to 593 Bq kg−1, 137Cs from 0.8 to 7.3 Bq kg−1, 226Ra from 18 to 35 Bq kg−1, 228Ra from 4 to 29 Bq kg−1 and 238U from 14 to 120 Bq kg−1. In addition, the ERICA Assessment Tool was used for the assessment of dose rates for reference marine organisms using the activity concentrations of the determined radionuclides in seawater. The assessment showed that for the most of the organisms, the dose rates were within the background levels, indicating that the determined values for seawater does not pose a significant risk for the most of marine biota. In the study, the results are critically discussed and compared with other similar studies worldwide.
