The Single Stage AMS radiocarbon facility at the Australian National University has operated for the past 14 years. This paper presents the pretreatment methods used for the major sample types dated and reflects on whether quality assurance protocols can adequately detect altered materials. The majority of fossil samples dated by the facility are from tropical and arid environments where diagenesis of both organic samples and carbonates is often severe. A large proportion of the samples submitted cannot be dated, and screening and quality assurance methods are crucial. Based on analysis of 250 measurements on bone collagen, quality assurance indicators for bone are revised. From May 2021, the laboratory has accepted dates on collagen where yield >0.5%, %C is in the range of 39.7–46.9, and the C:N ratio is between 3.00 and 3.30. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the late 1980s, northern Iberia has yielded some of the earliest radiocarbon dated Aurignacian assemblages in Western Europe, probably produced by anatomically modern humans (AMHs). This is at odds with its location furthest from the likely eastern entry point of AMHs, and has also suggested to some that the Châtelperronian resulted from cultural transfer from AMHs to Neanderthals. However, the accuracy of the early chronology has been extensively disputed, primarily because of the poor association between the dated samples and human activity. Here, we test the chronology of three sites in northern Iberia, L'Arbreda, Labeko Koba and La Viña, by radiocarbon dating ultrafiltered collagen from anthropogenically modified bones. The published dates from Labeko Koba are shown to be significant underestimates due to the insufficient removal of young contaminants. The early (c.44 ka cal BP [thousands of calibrated years before present]) Aurignacian chronology at L'Arbreda cannot be reproduced, but the reason for this is difficult to ascertain. The existing chronology of La Viña is found to be approximately correct. Together, the evidence suggests that major changes in technocomplexes occurred contemporaneously between the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions of northern Iberia, with the Aurignacian appearing around 42 ka cal BP, a date broadly consistent with the appearance of this industry elsewhere in Western Europe. Trace elements and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15C) in deep-sea coral have been used as proxies to reconstruct past climate, and to investigate food web structure. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the effect of preservation on the chemical integrity of archived coral. In this study a live-caught colony of Bamboo coral (southern Australia), genus (Lepidisis), was sectioned into three pieces and stored for approximately one year to investigate the influence of preservation in ethanol and preservation in seawater, that mimics the early stages of fossilization, against a dry preserved control. Storage and preservation have no significant effect on the isotopic signature of Δ14C, bulk δ15C, δ15C and δ13C of individual amino acids, or C:N in the fibrillar protein matrix, with the only offset (~0.2‰) being observed in part of the δ13C record. In the high-magnesium calcite lattice Ba/Ca appears to be significantly different after storage in ethanol, whereas Δ14C, B/Ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and U/Ca remain largely unaltered. Possible mechanisms responsible for these observed differences center around the decomposition, or contamination, by organics and we recommend further investigation, and caution when comparing samples with differing preservation histories.
