A novel wideband multilayer dual‐podal Vivaldi antenna with broadband characteristics from 5.5 to 20.82 GHz, is presented. Contrary to traditional Vivaldi antennas that are antipodal‐based, this design is realised by placing a pair of podal Vivaldi antennas with corrugated slots on the top and bottom of a substrate stack (consisting of two dielectric layers) using a Bondply. The pair is fed in‐phase with the help of a Strip‐Line (SL) transmission section that is terminated on a radial stub to couple capacitively to the antenna elements. With this technique of electrically coupling a podal Vivaldi pair, improved performance parameters are achieved, specifically: a measured maximum gain of 9.33 dBi, Half Power Beam Width of 126.5° in the H‐plane, and a maximum Front‐to‐Back (F/B) ratio of 14.36 dB with an overall antenna size of 29 × 21 × 1.63 mm. The in‐depth understanding of the working mechanism is supported by a detailed parametric analysis, current distribution, and a clear physical insight into the operating principles. Moreover, a 1 × 4 Vivaldi antenna array is also designed and analysed. A measured maximum gain of the 13 dBi at 15 GHz in the array is achieved along with the wide bandwidth of 6.3 GHz from 10.78 to 17.07 GHz. The array is fed through an SL corporate feed network that ensures in‐phase excitation of all four Vivaldi pairs. A Grounded Co‐planar Waveguide to SL transition is adopted for connecting the 2.92 mm Radio Frequency launcher on the top layer. This article reports on a single layer penta‐bandstop frequency selective surface (FSS) for multiband shielding applications. The proposed unit cell incorporates five independent resonant elements that are realized on a single‐sided FR4 substrate to suppress GSM ‐ 0.9 GHz, GPS ‐ 1.5 GHz, GSM ‐ 1.8 GHz, Wi‐Max ‐ 3.5 GHz, and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) ‐ 5.7 GHz frequency bands. The proposed single layer unit cell has compact lattice periodicity of order 0.11 λo × 0.11 λo. The design is not only polarization‐insensitive, but it also offers high angular stability up to 45°. A detailed parametric analysis is conducted to establish a relationship between geometrical parameters and FSS spectral response. Additionally, an equivalent lumped circuit model is also derived to further elaborate on the underlying resonance mechanism. A prototype is fabricated and tested to validate the performance of the proposed FSS. The measured results are in good agreement with simulated ones. The proposed FSS has the uniqueness of suppressing 0.9 GHz GSM band that has never been reported in a pentaband design. A radio frequency (RF)-based medical device implanted deep inside a human body can be wirelessly powered using RF energy. However, this method experiences loss in the form of attenuation and absorption, which is caused by the lossy human body. The need for a path loss (PL) model is, therefore, necessary to characterise these losses. This study presents a novel PL method, which is based on the |S21| measurements, obtained from a series of experiments on two different Dorset breed ovine models. Also, the uncertainty analysis of the equipment has been performed and the available RF power inside the body at a proposed implant location has been computed. The results are then used to develop and propose an equivalent model for PL in an anechoic chamber. Overall, an approximate PL of 3.5 dB/cm in the ovine body was measured at 1.2 GHz. Moreover, it was concluded that with the inevitable errors in the equipment, the total PL for 6 cm deep implant location was ∼21 dB with an uncertainty of 2.034 dB. The PL model presented is novel and has a great potential for applications in the design and development of RF-based implantable devices, especially leadless pacemakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Specific absorption rate (SAR) is a measure of safety and a requirement for portable radio frequency devices which are regulated mainly by the standards recommended by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and International Commission on Non‐Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Accurate approximation of SAR is therefore important for safety as well as for compliance purposes. This article presents the analytical representation and derivation of the SAR from the basics of electromagnetic theory, Maxwell Equations, and law of conservation of energy in electromagnetic theory. It is shown, analytically, that for a time harmonic electromagnetic wave propagating in a homogeneous lossy medium having permittivity ϵ, permeability µ, and conductivity σ, the time rate change of electric and magnetic energy densities at steady state inside a given volume is zero. It is also shown that at the steady state, the net power flowing through a volume, bounded by a surface is equal to the power dissipated in that volume. Furthermore, this work demonstrates that at the steady state, SAR can be represented in terms of power density or in terms of power dissipated in the given volume. Moreover, calculation of SAR for a 1 mm × 1 mm × 0.01 m box having the dielectric properties of human skin was performed using the derived formulas and then compared with the numerical results, obtained using a full wave 3D simulation tool, HFSS. Controlling Radio Frequency (RF) signals through switching technology is of interest to designers of modern wireless platforms such as Advanced Wireless services (AWS) from 2.18 GHz–2.2 GHz, mid-bands of sub-6 GHz 5G (2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz), and 4G bands around 600 MHz/700 MHz, 1.7 GHz/2.1 GHz/2.3 GHz/2.5 GHz. This is because certain layout efficiencies can be achieved if suitable components are chosen to control these signals. The objective of this paper is to present a new model of an RF switch denoted as a Magnetostatic Responsive Structure (MRS) for achieving reconfigurable operation in 4G/5G antennas. In particular, the ABCD matrices of the MRS are derived from the S-parameter values and shown to be a good model from 100 kHz to 3.5 GHz. Furthermore, an overall agreement between simulations, analytical results, and circuit model values are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
