A 24 segmented HPGe coaxial detector was set up with a digitized data acquisition system (DAQ). The DAQ was composed of a digitizer (5 × 107sampling/s), a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and a real time operating system. The Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM), rise time, signal characteristics, and spectra of a 137Cs source were evaluated. The data were processed using an in-house developed gamma-ray tracking system.

We discuss a new method to incorporate Type B uncertainty into least-squares procedures. The new method is based on an extension of the likelihood function from which a conventional least-squares function is derived. The extended likelihood function is the product of the original likelihood function with additional PDFs (Probability Density Functions) that characterize the Type B uncertainties. The PDFs are considered to describe one's incomplete knowledge on correction factors being called nuisance parameters. We use the extended likelihood function to make point and interval estimations of parameters in the basically same way as the least-squares function used in the conventional least-squares method is derived. Since the nuisance parameters are not of interest and should be prevented from appearing in the final result, we eliminate such nuisance parameters by using the profile likelihood. As an example, we present a case study for a linear regression analysis with a common component of Type B uncertainty. In this example we compare the analysis results obtained from using our procedure with those from conventional methods.

We discuss a new method to determine the value of a decision threshold that can be used to decide whether to choose a one-sided confidence interval or a two-sided confidence interval. The method is based on the Feldman-Cousins unified approach providing a unique confidence region for estimated parameters. We apply this method to a net count rate measurand in low-level radioactivity measurements which is physically restricted to nonnegative values. We tabulate the values of the decision threshold and detection limit of the measurand for some typical coverage probabilities. The decision threshold in this method does indeed enable a decision on whether or not the physical effect quantified by the measurand is present.

A new low-level background and high-efficiency gamma-ray spectrometric system, to be used mainly for the activity certification of natural-matrix certified reference materials (CRMs) and environmental reference materials (RMs) that has been developed on the grounds of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). The spectrometer consists of a low-background high-purity germanium detector with a relative efficiency of 120% and various shielding devices to reduce radiation background. The cabinet-shaped device made of 10 ton of shielding materials encloses the germanium detector for protection against background from natural radioactivity and neutrons. Three plates of 50-mm-thick plastic scintillation detectors on top of the passive shielding cabinet suppress cosmogenic background by detecting high-energetic cosmic muons bombarding the germanium detector. The measured background rate of the spectrometer for the energy range 50–3000 keV was 1.72 s –1 .

Sopoongsan is an oriental medicinal prescription including 12 medicinal herbs. Sopoongsan is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-allergic, and anti-cancer effects on human skin. To use Sopoongsan extract for functional cosmetic composition, its dark color should be brighter for seeking consumer demand, clear products, without any adverse change in its function. Irradiation with doses 0, 5, 10, and 20 kGy was applied to improve color of ethanol- or water-extracted Sopoongsan and also superoxide dismutase (SOD), xanthine oxidase (XO), melanoma cell growth inhibition, and anti-microbial activity was investigated. Generally, ethanol extract was better than water extract in function and irradiation up to 20 kGy did not change any functional effect. Especially, the inhibition of melanin deposition on skin measured by inhibition of B16F10 (melanoma) cell growth was as high as arbutin, commercially available product, when the ethanol-extracted Sopoongsan was irradiated for 20 kGy. Results showed that when irradiation technology is used, the limitation of addition amount of natural materials for food or cosmetic composition caused by color problem can be decreased significantly with time saving and cost benefit compared to conventional color removal process. Therefore, irradiation would be one of the good methods to pose an additional value for related industry.

We discuss a new method to determine the value of minimum detectable activity (MDA) in low-level measurements. The method is based on the Feldman-Cousins unified approach which effectively combines the construction of confidence intervals with the determination of the decision threshold and MDA. The new method requires a single probability to be pre-specified for the determination of MDA as well as decision threshold and confidence interval, in contrast with the ISO 11929 method requiring three probabilities.

A liquid scintillation counting method consisting of three photomultiplier tubes for beta counters and a NaI(Tl) gamma counter has been developed for the standardization of radionuclides with the beta-gamma coincidence technique. The beta detection efficiency functions are obtained by means of a geometry-variation method developed in the present work; an array of beta detectors is moved uniformly at the same time from a centrally located counting vial to 50 mm. The method has been applied in the standardization of 60Co and 134Cs. Unquenched liquid scintillation samples with nominal count rates from 1000 to 6000 s-1 were prepared. The observed beta detection efficiencies with this method are from 90 to 45% in the case of 60Co, and from 84 to 50% for 134Cs. The output of each beta channel is summed together and compared with gamma data by the coincidence analyzer. The dead time of each counting channel is adjusted to be 20 micros, sufficiently long to suppress the afterpulses in the beta counting channel. The activity of each sample is determined by using the Cox and Isham formula. The obtained results are in good agreement with KRISS certified values.

We have developed, as a national standard, a windowless multiwire proportional counting (MWPC) system for gross measurements of α - and β -emitting radionuclides at an uncertainty level below 1%. Various detector characteristics have been studied and several working parameters of the system have been determined in order to achieve an optimized detection capability. The detector is commissioned through an international comparison of the β emission rate from an extended area 36 Cl source. Correction for the dead time loss is made by the non-extendable dead time method. A linear extrapolation of pulse height spectrum is employed to correct for the loss in the detection efficiency due to discriminating against the events formed from a small number of original ion pairs. The surface emission rate was measured to be 1.84 × 10 3 counts/s with the relative combined standard uncertainty of 0.46%. The measured uncertainty indicates that the constructed MWPC is capable of serving as a national standard.

The CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing method has been widely used for radionuclide standardization. The method consists of the theoretical calculations of counting efficiencies and the experimental data obtained from a commercially available double photomultiplier detector. We have recently implemented the technique using 3H as a tracer. Our implementation of the method was validated by participating into an international comparison of activity measurements of a solution of 204T1. We report in this paper the procedure employed to implement the technique and compare our measurement result of 204T1 activity with that of the international comparison.

KRISS, as the national metrology institute of Korea, has used a reference ionization chamber system to certify the activity of 99mTc aqueous sources, but could only recently participate in a comparison exercise by the BIPM (BIPM.RI(II)-K4.Tc-99m) to secure the international equivalence of 99mTc radioactivity measurement by way of the BIPM transfer instrument (SIRTI). The KRISS ionization chamber system was calibrated about 100 days before the comparison with a 99mTc solution source standardized by the 4πβ(LS)-γ(NaI(Tl)) coincidence counting method. During the comparison, beginning with a higher activity mother solution, the KRISS ionization chamber measured its specific activity without a dilution. The activity of a diluted-solution source was measured by the SIRTI at the same time.

We have developed a multi-channel time scaling method that is suitable for activity measurement of beta emitting nuclides by means of 3-PM Liquid Scintillation Counting, using non-extending dead times and linear amplifiers. Since it enables to obtain the accidental coincidences directly, the true values for both double and triple coincidences are determined by simply taking into account the correction due to dead times. The advantages of the method are demonstrated by studying the activity of 204Tl and 14C. The measured results were compared with those derived by using the mathematical formulae.

We have developed a three-dimensional data-acquisition system with which pulse heights from an array of detectors can be multi-scaled with dwell times as short as 31 ns. The main part of the system consists of three ADCs of SAR (Successive Approximation Register) type, a 32 MHz oscillation clock and DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) of 192 Mbyte capacity. The clock time is determined by count the clock pulse generated by 28 bits synchronous counter. Both the pulse height and the time information are stored at an array of DRAM, of 40-bits width, 12-bits for pulse height and 28-bits for clock time. The technique is particularly suitable for experiments such as both double and triple coincidence distributions are required. Virtues of the method are demonstrated by measuring the activity of 14C with a 3-PM liquid scintillation counting system. The computer discrimination together with the MCTS (multi-channel time scaling) technique is applied for efficiency variation method in the analysis.

A data acquisition system based on a coincidence controller with buffer memory has been developed for standardization of radionuclides. The energy and output time of the shaped linear pulses generated from an ADC are digitized and latched by a 10 MHz clock oscillator, then these data are stored in the random access memory (RAM) of the coincidence controller. The coincidence resolving time and gamma windows can be selected by an off-line computer analysis program and the efficiency function is obtained by a computer discrimination method. This method is well suited for absolute activity measurement of radionuclides with relatively long-lived intermediate states as well as prompt decay.

The maintenance of radioactive equilibrium between radon and its decay products in a radon chamber is necessary to calibrate radon decay product monitors. In this study, the activity concentrations of radon decay products have been measured, and mosquito-repellent incense has been used to produce aerosol particles in the chamber. Filter papers with 8 μm pore size were used to collect aerosol in the chamber. The activity concentrations of radon decay products have been evaluated by the Modified Tsivoglou Method. The correction factors due to the differences in counting time requirements of the Modified Tsivoglou Method and the time delay between consecutive measurements have been determined. Finally, the radioactive equilibrium has been confirmed by applying the Bateman equation.

In 2010, a comparison of activity measurements of (99m)Tc was carried out at the KRISS using the BIPM's Transfer Instrument of the International Reference System (SIRTI). The transfer instrument and the KRISS coincidence measurement method are briefly described. The degrees of equivalence with the key comparison reference value and between the present KRISS result and the earlier participants in the SIRTI and SIR comparisons have been evaluated. World-wide consistency of activity measurements of (99m)Tc is demonstrated.

The radioactivity of 18 F has been measured by a digital coincidence counting (DCC) system. The main advantages of the digital coincidence counting technique are a shortening of the measurement time as compared with conventional coincidence counting and an ability to obtain activities with various experimental parameters through off-line analysis. The measurement results of radioactivity for 18 F solution were compared with those of a conventional coincidence counting technique and a reference ion chamber method.

Feldman-Cousins’ unified approach provides an unique confidence region for parameters under estimation and assures an exact coverage for the constructed confidence region. We present a procedure to implement this approach in least-squares regression analyses. The procedure is based on a series of the most powerful likelihood-ratio tests of hypothesis using a single number as a test statistic. The procedure thereby avoids the complications of the Feldman-Cousins method arising when the number of free parameters is more than one. Applying the procedure to a case of nonlinear regression problems where the estimated parameters are not generally Gaussian distributed, we show that one has to use the procedure when the results of the regression analysis are to be carefully investigated near a boundary of the physical region.

The coincidence summing effects on a HPGe spectrometer have been studied by using Marinelli beakers containing (133)Ba and (152)Eu solutions. The coincidence summing effects were calculated from the ratio of full-energy peak efficiency and total efficiency. The peak efficiency values for (133)Ba and (152)Eu corrected by using the peak-to-total ratio were found to be in good agreement (within 3%) as compared with the efficiency values from Marinelli beakers containing single gamma-ray emitters.

Alpha-emitting 238Pu and 241Am sources on stainless steel substrates have been prepared using a new electrodeposition method based on an ammonium oxalate-ammonium sulfate electrolyte containing diethyl triamino pentaacetic acid. The deposition yield is determined by measuring the activity of the sources using a high-efficiency 2pi alpha proportional counter and a backscattering chamber designed and fabricated for this purpose. Optimal electrodeposition parameters have been determined for 241Am, enabling manufacture of standard alpha-emitting sources with minimal radioactive waste.

Radon calibration chamber has been constructed to test and calibrate radon and radon progeny detectors at various environmental conditions and to study the characteristic behavior of radon decay products. The size of main room in the chamber is 3.2 m x 3.3 m x 2.4 m (25.3 m3) and the total volume of the chamber is 39.1 m3. The maximum concentration of radon in the chamber can be maintained up to 250 kBq m(-3) and temperature and humidity are controlled in the ranges of (10-40) degrees C and (30-80)%, respectively. The equilibrium factor and unattached fraction of radon progeny are determined at the radon concentration of 2 kBq m(-3).

An improved triple-to-double coincidence ratio system has been developed to obtain efficiency variation by means of geometrical displacement, that is, three photomultiplier (PM) tubes move back and forth direction from a vial source. The detection unit of the system is located in a cylindrical chamber for light shielding, and a stepping motor connected to the three PM tubes controls the source-to-detector distance up to 50 mm with 1 mm resolution. In activity measurements of 14C and 204Tl using this measurement technique, the efficiencies varied from 0.60 to 0.90 for 14C and from 0.87 to 0.96 for 204Tl. In this study, the characteristics of the system are described as well as data acquisition and analysis methods.

The activities of 152Eu and 88Y have been measured by the digital coincidence counting (DCC) technique and compared with those of the conventional coincidence counting technique. In the DCC, the pulse amplitudes from both beta and gamma channels are digitized in commercial ADCs and the pulse input times are simultaneously determined by 10 MHz oscillation clock installed in the coincidence module. The activity of the measured source is determined from the information of pulse height and input time for each pulse by off-line analysis. The activity of 152Eu was determined from extrapolations of efficiency functions obtained at 3gamma gates and the result showed a good agreement with that of the conventional method with 0.2% of uncertainty. The activity of 88Y was also determined by the DCC technique, and the reliability of the result was proved through Asia Pacific Metrology Program (APMP) inter-comparison of 88Y.

Correlation effects due to the cascade transition of gamma-rays with gates on the relevant peaks have been studied in activity measurement of 59Fe using the bi-dimensional coincidence counting method. Extrapolation curves were obtained at three gamma gates of 1099.2 keV, 1291.6 keV, and that covering both photo-peaks by a computer discrimination method. Of these extrapolation curves, only that obtained at (950-1350) keV gamma gate shows a linear variation, but those of two single gamma gates are not linearly varied in the high efficiency region. This nonlinearity obtained at the gamma gate of 1099.2 keV photo-peak was caused by the correlation effects due to 1-3 coincidence relation via unobserved 192 keV gamma-ray transitions.
