Abstract

The article investigate how affirmative action policies addressing the issues involving race discrimination in the country. Topics discussed include laws concerning fair employment under the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964; establishment of the U.S. Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity (CEEO) for enforcement of the employment laws; and decision of the U.S. Supreme court in the "Fisher v. University of Texas" case involving admission laws based on race.

Abstract

The article presents a reprint of the article "From a Tangle of Pathology to a Race-Fair America" by Alan Aja and colleagues, which appeared in the 2014 issue of "Dissent Magazine." It explores the notion of anthropologist Oscar Lewis of a "culture of poverty" and the 1965 Moynihan Report where African American families were characterized to be caught up in a tangle of pathology. It discusses the high racial gap in unemployment in marked contrast to gains in income and educational attainment.
