Background and Objectives: This study aimed to identify asymptomatic brain lesions in patients with β-thalassemia major (TM) and sickle cell anemia (SCA) and evaluate the correlation of these lesions with factors such as splenectomy, thrombocytosis, and blood transfusions. Materials and Methods: A total of 26 patients with thalassemia major and 23 patients with sickle cell anemia were included. Ischemic lesions were categorized as lacunar, small vessel, or multifocal. Variables including age, years of education, presence and type of MRI-detected ischemia, smoking status, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, ferritin levels, vitamin B12 levels, fasting blood sugar, splenectomy status, chelation therapy, and hydroxyurea treatment were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age was 27.33 years in the thalassemia major group and 32.65 years in the sickle cell anemia group (p = 0.010). No statistically significant difference was observed in the distribution of ischemia types between the groups (p = 0.303). The thalassemia major group had a lower mean hemoglobin level (8.37 g/dL) compared to the sickle cell anemia group (9.57 g/dL) (p = 0.003). Ferritin levels were significantly higher in the thalassemia major group (2018.92 ng/mL) than in the sickle cell anemia group (660.39 ng/mL) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Although ischemic lesions were more frequently observed in patients with sickle cell anemia, the difference was not statistically significant. These findings emphasize the importance of ongoing surveillance and individualized management to mitigate cerebrovascular risks in both patient populations.

Purpose: Thalassemia and sickle cell anemia patients have frequent transfusions. Hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are tramsmitted infections with blood. The objective of this study is to determine frequency of these infections in our hemoglobinopathy patients. Material and Methods: We investigated 410 hemoglobinopathy patients. Viral serologies were detected with second-generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. In 410 patients (116 thalassemia major, 16 thalassemia intermedia, 12 hemoglobin H, 222 sickle cell anemia, 43 sickle-beta thalassemia and 1 Hb SE), there were 258 males and 152 females. Results: The rate of HBV is 1,2%, HCV is 3,2% and HIV is 0%. Our results shows that transfusion transmitted viral infection prevelance is not high compared to the literature. Conclusion: Using sensitive screening tests with periodically and right donor selection are very important for preventing these infections in hemoglobinopathy patients who are under high risk. Amaç: Bu çalışmada ağrılı krizle gelen orak hücreli anemi hastalarımızın hastaneye yatış sıklığını etkileyen faktörleri bulmayı amaçladık. Materyal ve Metod: Yetmiş i homozigot, 14'ü orak-beta talasemi olan 84 orak hücreli anemi hastası stabil durumdayken çalışmamıza katıldı. Bu çalışmada aynı zamanda 2010 ve 1012 yılları arasında hastalarımızın demografik ve klinik verilerini bildirdik. Bulgular ve Sonuç: Hidroksiüre alan hastaların hastaneye daha sık yattıklarını ve hastaneye yatışla diğer değişkenler arasında bir ilişki olmadığı saptanmıştır. Hastaneye yatış açısından diğer değişkenler yönünden fark bulunamadı.

Gelişmemiş ülkelerde, yetersiz aşılama, kötü hijyen ve yaşam koşulları nedeniyle hepatit A yaygındır. Sekonder immun trombositopeni, Hepatit B ve C enfeksiyonlarında sık görülürken, akut hepatit A enfeksiyonu bulgusu olarak nadiren bildirilmiştir. Sekonder immun trombositopenik purpurası olan akut hepatit A enfeksiyonlu 2 olgu burada sunulmuştur.

In undeveloped countries, Hepatitis A is common and endemic because of unimmunization, unhygienic nutrition and poor living conditions. Secondary immune thrombocytopenia is frequently seen in hepatitis B and C infections. It is rarely reported with acute hepatitis A. Purpose: In this study, we aimed to find factors effecting hospitalization frequency of our sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients with painful crisis. Material and Methods: Eighty four SCA patients in steady-state condition participated to the study: Seventy with homozygous, and 14 with sickle cell-beta thalassemia disease. In this study we also reported demographic and clinical data of our patients from February 2010 to October 2012. Results and Conclusion: We found that patients using hydroxyurea and penicillin prophylaxis stayed in hospital more times than the others. No relationship between high hospitalization and other variables have been found. However genetic differences may be present among these patients which warrant further studies.

Amaç: Talasemi ve orak hücreli anemi hastaları sık transfüzyon almaktadır. Hepatit B (HBV), hepatit C (HCV) ve insan immün yetmezlik virüsü (HIV) kanla geçmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı hemoglobinopati hastalarımızda bu enfeksiyonların sıklığını belirlemektir. Materyal ve Metod: Dört yüz on hemoglobinopati hastasını inceledik.Viral serolojiler "ikinci jenerasyon enzim bağlantılı immün absorban tahlil" metoduyla incelendi. Dört yüz on hastanın (116 talasemi major, 16 talasemi intermedia, 12 hemoglobin H, 222 orak hücreli anemi, 43 orak-beta talasemi ve 1 Hb E) 258"i erkek, 152"si kadındı. Bulgular: HBV sıklığı %1,2, HCV %3,2 ve HIV %0 bulundu. Sonuçlarımız göstermektedir ki transfüzyon ilişkili viral enfeksiyon sıklığı literatüre kıyasla daha yüksek değildir. Sonuç: Peryodik olarak duyarlı tarama testlerinin kullanılması ve doğru verici seçimi yüksek risk altındaki hemoglobinopati hastalarının bu enfeksiyolarda korunmasında çok önemlidir.
