Background: Patient-centred care must consider service consumers' needs and improve their health and well-being as well as their satisfaction and the quality of their healthcare assistance. However, individuals experiencing mental illness often struggle with barriers and misunderstandings by health care professionals. Nursing Faculties are uniquely positioned to reduce stigmatising attitudes via new educational interventions that could align nursing curricula and individuals with mental illness needs. However, there are few studies about the stigma toward mental illness among nursing students in Spain. Objectives: The present study aimed to analyse the effect of a 9-month educational intervention on the level of stigma in nursing students. Design: a one-group pre-postintervention design with no control group was conducted. Methods: A total of 194 nursing students completed the EVEPEM scale before and after the intervention. The intervention comprised 55 hours of campus sessions and 150 h practicum in mental health settings. Results: A destigmatising tendency was captured by a large main effect and a statistically significant stigma reduction. Conclusions: The educational 9-month intervention was effective in reducing students' stigma by providing theoretical education, personal contact with mental health service consumers, and critical reflection activities. Self-efficacy is a critical element of social cognitive theory and refers to a person's estimation of their ability to complete a specific task. Self-efficacy scales evaluate the effectiveness of communication skills training programs. There were not validated scales in Spanish. to cross-culturally adapt the Self-efficacy questionnaire-12 scale in communication skills in Spanish, evaluate its psychometric properties, and analyse the sample's descriptive characteristics. we conducted an instrumental study to develop evaluation scales. nursing students were invited to participate (N = 387). The inclusion criteria were: (1) enrolment in first or fourth academic course year; (2) not having received specific training in communication skills; and (3) understanding written and spoken Spanish fluently. A total of 334 undergraduates participated (86.3% response rate); their mean age was 21.9 years (SD = 5.8), 83.2% were female. data showed high internal consistency (0.94) and a good fit to the model. The overall instrument score correlated with the attitude towards communication skills (r = 0.20; p < 0.001). Moderate communication self-efficacy scores were observed in these nursing students. Evaluating communication skills through self-efficacy scales allows teachers to know each student's perceived proficiency to handle communication with users safely and to understand users' needs, giving information about aspects to improve and to establish effective institutional strategies as one of the inherent characteristics of the concept of skills-based evaluation. The Spanish version of the Self-efficacy questionnaire-12 in communication skills was a valid and reliable instrument, essential for evaluating the perceived self-efficacy towards communication in nursing. The authors' purpose was to analyse the influence of beauty stereotypes on the everyday life of men and women and the behaviours adopted in order to satisfy such ideals using mixed methods of an exploratory nature. Taking into account that 76.7% of participants agree that the current established beauty stereotypes affect their everyday lives, we aim to explain the influence of beauty stereotypes and the behaviours adopted in order to comply with them. Assessing the degree of assimilation of gender-related socio-cultural beauty stereotypes allows us to examine how this can trigger behavioural responses in order to shape one's identity. Accessible summary: What is known on the subject?: AHDs in mental health are fundamental tools in advance care planning processes. It is an important method for involving mental healthcare users in clinical decisions and in providing effective healthcare based around user preferences.AHDs can be applied in situations in which the person may forfeit their legal capacity, according to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.However, the use of AHDs as described above is not yet a reality in Spain. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: The present study surveys the knowledge and attitudes of mental healthcare providers towards AHDs in clinical practice.Although providers had a moderate–low level of knowledge about AHDs, they presented positive attitudes towards them. What are the implications for practice?: The use of AHDs in mental healthcare practice poses challenges to the Spanish mental healthcare system. Introduction: Advance healthcare directives (AHDs) in mental health offer important information regarding service users' preferences. However, whether AHDs are truly understood by providers is questionable. Aim: To survey the knowledge and attitudes of mental health professionals towards AHDs and examine any associations with sociodemographic and occupational variables. Method: We cross‐sectionally surveyed the knowledge and attitudes of 113 mental health professionals by using two validated questionnaires. Results: Participants showed very positive attitudes and high levels of knowledge about the conceptual definition and application of AHDs in clinical practice but their knowledge of the legalities, procedure and registration of AHDs was poor. Working in a community, having a career specializing in mental health or having personally signed an AHD was associated with enhanced knowledge about them. Moreover, female sex or employment as an auxiliary nursing‐care technician was associated with stronger positive attitudes. Discussion: Legal and structural changes will be needed to implement AHDs in Spain and to promote competence among healthcare providers in order to include AHDs in everyday practice. Postnatal sense of security is a relevant construct related to several variables of motherhood. However, it has not yet been studied in the Spanish context. The aims were: (a) To analyze the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the Mothers' Postnatal Sense of Security Scale (PPSS‐S); (b) analyze the factors related to mothers' sense of security during the first 2 weeks following childbirth (sociodemographic variables and factors related to maternity); and (c) examine the predictive utility that mothers' sense of security has on symptoms of postpartum depression 6–11 months after childbirth. This was a prospective longitudinal study performed in the first 6–11 months post‐partum in four regions of Spain. A total of 928 mothers whose mean age was 33.67 years (standard deviation = 4.54) participated. The confirmatory factor analysis showed adequate adjustment to the original structure (χ2 = 17,272.79, df = 153, p <.001; Tucker–Lewis index = 0.98; comparative fit index = 0.98; root mean square error of approximation = 0.058 [0.053‐0.063])and the overall internal consistency was 0.89. Direct relationships were shown between women' sense of security and already having had a child, the absence of postpartum health complications (either in the mother or the newborn) and receiving consistent information from healthcare professionals. Our results showed adequate evidence for the reliability and validity of the Spanish version of the PPSS‐S. Understanding mothers' sense of security during the early months of motherhood, as well as related factors in the postpartum period, will allow health professionals to implement preventive measures to promote mental health and could help reduce symptoms of postpartum depression. Aims: To adapt the Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Placement Survey (PMHCPS) to Spanish and examine its psychometric properties; to describe the attitudes of nursing students towards the mental health field. Method: Confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA), internal consistency and construct validity were performed. An assessment of the students' attitudes was also conducted. Results: The CFA showed appropriate fit, and total internal consistency was adequate. With regard to construct validity, knowledge was associated with practicum mark. The students achieved above mid‐range scores for all subscales, except negative stereotypes. Gender differences were observed. Discussion: The PMHCPS, translated to Spanish, enables the students' attitude towards the mental health field to be assessed, thus identifying those areas of student attitudes and competencies requiring improvement. Implications for practice: To provide Spanish nursing faculties with access to a scale, with which to assess changes in student attitudes. to determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome among Spanish emergency medical service professionals and establish any possible relationships between their levels of empathy and sociodemographic and/or working conditions. 550 professionals participated in this descriptive study by responding to the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Basic Empathy Scale. respondents were, on average, 40.9 years old (SD = 9.03) and 63.4% were female. Their average length of service was 11.6 years (SD = 8.1); 57.9% were physicians, 22.4% nurses, and 7.2% technical staff. Of the 337 who said they had children, 51% said that parenthood affected their emotional state when attending emergency situations involving children. Participants generally considered themselves to be competent (x ˙ = 4.2 ; SD = 0.7) and occupationally motivated (x ˙ = 3.8 ; SD = 1.1). More experienced participants presented fewer signs of burnout and empathy and more signs of competence (p < 0.001). Occupational category appeared to significantly affect the presentation of burnout syndrome (p < 0.05). Prehospital emergency medical services (PEMS) staff tended to rate their ability to perform their work and interact professionally with their patients more positively than emergency department staff. Spanish emergency medical service staff present similar levels of burnout to other healthcare providers but have higher levels of empathy. We found no significant differences in the presentation of burnout between physicians and nurses, but compared to emergency department staff, PEMS professionals appeared to be more confident in their abilities. Educational activities are required to improve professionals' ability to cope with their work and structural workplace interventions could help reinforce healthcare professionals' ability to tolerate intense workloads and to maintain their sense that their work is rewarding. Nursing faculties are working to improve students' attitudes towards mental illness and people with severe mental illness, given the repercussions a lack of knowledge and negative attitudes may have on the quality of care. Complementing undergraduate programmes with volunteering activities affords students the opportunity to interact with people with a severe mental illness, and allow them to develop positive attitudes and overcome prejudice. Aim: to explore and deepen in nursing students attitudes prior to and following volunteering on an Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit. By means of mixed methods approach, students were assessed at two time points by questionnaires including "Community Attitudes to Mental Illness" and "Semantic Differential", and by testimonies gathered from interviews. Positives changes in attitudes were identified and monitored over time capturing a destigmatizing tendency. The participation in educational strategies such as volunteering in Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit, complementary to undergraduate programmes and clinical placements in mental health, allows nursing students to develop more diversified and positive attitudes towards mental illness and people with severe mental illness. The impact of an interventional education strategy is not as powerful in nursing students as it might be in students of other non-healthcare oriented university degrees due to their baseline attitudes. • The students' experience of a volunteering educational intervention was explored. • Volunteering in mental health settings aids students in improving their attitudes. • The students valued the opportunity to learn offered by the volunteering activity.
