Introduction: The number of Italian citizens unaware of their risk of cardiovascular disease it is still very high. Aim: This study aimed to translate and preliminarily validate a brief Italian version of the Perception of Risk of Heart Disease Scale (PRHDS). Methods: PRHDS was culturally adapted to the Italian context. Then, the scale was administered to 772 healthy adults. By randomly dividing the sample into two subsamples, we tested the scale dimensionality through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Finally, we evaluated internal consistency. Results: Psychometric properties of the scale were appropriate. EFA and CFA evidenced a unidimensional structure of a brief version of the scale, composed of six items. Internal consistency was adequate. Conclusions: Italian version of the brief PRHDS is a promising self-report questionnaire to measure cardiovascular risk perception among Italian adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To translate and validate the Italian version of the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS‐ita). Methods: A single‐center cross‐sectional study was performed from October 15 to November 15, 2019 in a public hospital in Milan, Italy. The scale was drafted using the back‐translation method. Prior to administration, the Italian version of the scale was assessed for content validity and retest stability by calculating the content validity index. Internal consistency was investigated by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient, test‐retest stability by Spearman's rho coefficient. Findings: A total n = 337 nurses participated in the survey by correctly completing the scale. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin test (0.81) and Bartlett's test of sphericity (p < 0.001) confirmed the adequacy of the sample to conduct exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The factorial model of EFA without rotation and then with nonorthogonal Promax rotation confirmed the presence of the four constructs identified by the original author. Conclusions: SSCRS‐ita showed promising psychometric properties in terms of validity and reliability. The results of this study, together with the lack of in‐depth studies in the Italian health and educational panorama, suggest the need to develop an educational pathway which, starting from the curricula of basic training and continuing with the updating of nursing staff, is dedicated to the detection of the spiritual needs of the patient. Implications for nursing practice: The SSCRS‐ita is the first validated Italian tool concerning the consideration of the needs of spirituality and spiritual care in healthcare contexts; the possibility to use this tool is the first step towards a better integration of the mentioned dimensions of care in a nursing care qualitative perspective in Italy. Objective: Medication errors are a concern in overall the world. Although there are studies that investigate what may be the main causes that lead to the genesis of the medication error in the home care setting, there is no tool that correlates knowledge, attitudes, and behavior to medication errors in the context of home care. This study aimed to psychometrically test to the questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in the administration of medication in the new setting: home care setting. Design: This observational study was reported according to the STROBE checklist. Sample: Sixty two nurses working in home care setting responded to the online survey. Measurement: The face and content validity of the items generated was assessed. An Exploratory Factorial Analysis descriptive statistical analysis was conducted. The final questionnaire is composed of 20 items. Results: The results of the statistical analyses allowed to validate the questionnaire, ensuring good internal consistency and reliability. Most of the sample pointed out that the use of electronic health record, medication reconciliation and the pharmacist's figure are all useful strategies for reducing the risk of medication errors. Objective: This multicentre study aimed to develop a measure of the perception of care dependence in patients diagnosed with cancer and to test its psychometric properties. Methods: The questionnaire was developed based on findings emerged from a meta‐synthesis and from qualitative studies conducted in three hospitals in Italy. The draft questionnaire was tested for face and content validity and pilot‐tested with patients. The questionnaire was completed by care‐dependent patients with cancer. Test‐retest was conducted to verify stability. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed using a Maximum Likelihood robust estimator. Results and conclusion: The Scale‐Content Validity Index was 0.92. The final 15‐item questionnaire was completed by 208 patients admitted to two hospitals. The EFA yielded a two‐factor model including a positive and a negative perception of care dependence. Factor score determinacy coefficients, Cronbach's alpha coefficients, composite reliability coefficients and Intraclass Correlations Coefficients yielded satisfactory results confirming internal consistency and stability. The hedonic balance score is also available as a single indicator of subjective well‐being. The study provides initial validation of the Care DEeP Questionnaire that can be used by cancer nurses to assess positive and negative patient experiences with care dependence and to personalise and improve their care. Objective: The main aim of this study was to assess the psychometric proprieties of the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ) in Italian mothers.Design: Mothers completed the Italian version of the CFQ, and children's anthropometric data were collected. Construct validity of the CFQ was assessed by comparing three different models: (a) a seven correlated factors model in which all items were analysed; (b) a seven correlated factors model with composite items based on the Restriction factor and (c) an eight correlated factors model with a separate Reward factor. Measurement invariance using BMI categories and gender was evaluated. Furthermore, discriminant validity with group comparison was performed between BMI categories and gender.Setting: Italy.Participants: A total of 1253 6-year-old Italian children (53·9 % male) attending elementary school (1st grade) and their mothers (mean age = 38·22 years; sd = 4·89) participated in this study.Results: The eight-factor model with a separate reward factor provided the best fit for the data. The strict invariance of the CFQ across child BMI categories and gender was confirmed. The CFQ internal consistency was acceptable for most subscales. However, two subscales showed no adequate values. As expected, the CFQ scales showed significant differences between BMI categories, while no gender-related differences were found.Conclusions: The study indicated the Italian version of the CFQ to be factorially valid for assessing parental feeding practices of 6-year-old children across BMI categories. Background: Malnutrition in older people in hospitals leads to negative patient outcomes. Nurses often underestimate the problem, showing negative attitudes. Aims: To compare nurses' attitudes towards nutritional care of older people in surgical and medical wards. Design: Multicentre cross-sectional survey, conducted in January 2015. Methods: All nurses in surgical and medical wards in 10 hospitals in northern Italy were surveyed using the Staff Attitudes to Nutritional Nursing Care Geriatric Scale (SANN-G scale). Results: 799 out of 1,293 questionnaires were returned (61.8%). 23.2% (185) had a negative attitude, 56.6%(452) had a neutral attitude, and 20.2%(162), positive. Multivariate analysis showed no significant differences between medical and surgical wards (OR = 1.298; CI95% =.883-1.886, p =.18). Conclusions: It is necessary to raise nurses' awareness of poor nutritional care in both settings. More research is needed within the barriers to nutritional care. Aims: To develop and validate a comprehensive tool based on those established in the field capable of reflecting the broader concept of Unfinished Nursing Care. Background: Different tools have been established in the field of Missed Care, Rationing Care and Tasks Left Undone. However, despite them sharing similar items and all referring to the common concept of Unfinished Nursing Care, no attempts to collapse them in a single tool capable of reflecting current nursing practice, and its increased complexity, have been attempted to date. Methods: A development and validation study was performed in 2017. After developing the instrument starting from the MISSCARE Survey and critically reviewing the other tools available in the field, the Unfinished Nursing Care Survey (UNCS) was subjected to validation. A total of 1977 nurses from 13 acute Italian hospitals were recruited. Acceptability, construct validity (Mokken Scaling, Explorative and Confirmative Factor Analysis), internal consistency, hypothesis testing and criterion validity were assessed according to the COnsensus‐based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments guideline. Results: 1,400 (70.8%) nurses participated. The UNCS is composed of part A (=elements of unfinished care) and part B (=reasons for unfinished care) with 21 and 18 items, respectively. The UNCS has showed high acceptability (>90%). Part A has reported a strong scalability (H =.52), thus suggesting a hierarchical structure among the items. The six factors in part B explained a total variance of 64.3% (internal consistency =.806) as confirmed by the Confirmative Factor Analysis. Conclusions: The comprehensive nature of the UNCS can contribute to the establishment of a common reference measure of the phenomenon worldwide although its psychometric properties require future investigation in different cultural contexts, languages and clinical settings. Implications for Nursing Management: Measuring Unfinished Nursing Care provides information on the processes implicated in the development of adverse events before these become visible; moreover, it can increase awareness on nurses' performance and inform appropriate interventions to improve it. Background: The large number of women surviving many years post breast cancer (BC) diagnosis has heightened interest in studying long-term effects of cancer on quality of life (QoL). Several cancer-specific health-related measures have been developed, but these may not be appropriate for long survivors. This study evaluates the reliability and clinical and psychometric validity of the BreSAS questionnaire (BQ) among BC survivors.Methods: The BQ is a quick, simple ten-item module for the assessment of long-term physical, psychological, sexual, and cognitive effects that may influence QoL. The total BreSAS score ranks from 0 to 100, with a low score indicating a better QoL. Patients complete the BQ, the FACT-ES questionnaire, and case report forms for clinical and socio-demographic data during follow-up visits. Reliability and clinical and psychometric validity of the questionnaires are assessed by correlation analyses and exploration of known group comparisons.Results: From September 2015 to February 2016, 149 patients from three Italian oncology units were enrolled. Baseline questionnaires were returned from all, and 134 patients (89%) completed the BQ and FACT-ES in less than 15 min. For reliability, Cronbach's alpha coefficients for each scale were greater than 0.70 in all analyzed symptoms. Convergent validity of BQ showed by Pearson's r demonstrated a high correlation between intensity of symptoms and QoL, especially for pain and depression. No data were provided about reproducibility with test-retest study.Conclusion: The BQ demonstrates sufficient validity and reliability to support its use to assess patient-reported symptoms during planned follow-up clinical visits among BC survivors. The aim of this study is to validate the Italian version of the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule (MAKS-I). The validation process included: linguistic validation; analysis of the feasibility; face validity; internal consistency; floor and the ceiling effects; divergent validity. Multiple linear regression was performed to examine the relationship between mental health knowledge and independent variables. MAKS-I was administered to 453 people. The linguistic validation was successful and face validity of the questionnaire showed no critical issues. The estimated composite reliability was 0.638. Divergent validity was supported by lack of statistical significant correlation between MAKS-I and RIBS-I with a positive correlation index. Participation in seminars or conferences related to the issue of mental health stigma, gender, qualification and having a first or second-degree relatives with a psychiatric disorder can be considered possible predictors of the MAKS-I score. Background: Lateral violence and bullying affect nurses' professional and health status. Worldwide prevalence ranges from 1% to 87%. Aim: To investigate prevalence and risk factors of lateral violence and bullying among Italian nurse peers in different work settings, inside and outside hospitals. Methods: Web survey using the 17‐item "Negative Interactions Among Nurses Questionnaire." Emails were sent to 5,009 nurses in three Tuscan public health care institutions. Results: Response rate was 18.6% (n = 930). Twenty‐six respondents were removed as they reported working with no peer colleagues. Negative interactions were experienced by 35.8% (n = 324), 42.3% of whom (n = 137) were bullied. Psycho‐physical consequences of negative interactions were reported by 59% (n = 191). Victims who thought of leaving nursing were 21.9% (n = 71). Conclusions: Lateral violence and bullying among nurses are consistently present in all studied settings. Implications for Nursing Management: Nurse managers could play a crucial role in preventing negative interactions among nurses. Strategies could include continuing education programs to promote awareness of this problem; implementation of an anonymous reporting system for bullying; introduction of occupational psychologists in wards with larger numbers of reported negative interactions and bullying; and increasing changes in staff composition within shifts. Aim To develop and psychometrically test the Italian-language Nurse Caring Behaviours Scale, a short measure of nurse caring behaviour as perceived by inpatients. Background Patient perceptions of nurses' caring behaviours are a predictor of care quality. Caring behaviours are culture-specific, but no measure of patient perceptions has previously been developed in Italy. Moreover, existing tools show unclear psychometric properties, are burdensome for respondents, or are not widely applicable. Design Instrument development and psychometric testing. Method Item generation included identifying and adapting items from existing measures of caring behaviours as perceived by patients. A pool of 28 items was evaluated for face validity. Content validity indexes were calculated for the resulting 15-item scale; acceptability and clarity were pilot tested with 50 patients. To assess construct validity, a sample of 2,001 consecutive adult patients admitted to a hospital in 2014 completed the scale and was split into two groups. Reliability was evaluated using nonlinear structural equation modelling coefficients. Measurement invariance was tested across subsamples. Results Item 15 loaded poorly in the exploratory factor analysis ( n = 983) and was excluded from the final solution, positing a single latent variable with 14 indicators. This model fitted the data moderately. The confirmatory factor analysis ( n = 1018) returned similar results. Internal consistency was excellent in both subsamples. Full scalar invariance was reached, and no significant latent mean differences were detected across subsamples. Conclusion The new instrument shows reasonable psychometric properties and is a promising short and widely applicable measure of inpatient perceptions of nurse caring behaviours. Purpose To develop and perform reliability and validity assessments of the international Multidimensional Nursing Generations Questionnaire. Background There are three generations of nurses in the European workforce. There is little research on the characteristics of these generations and the ways in which to manage them professionally, and no instrument has yet been developed to measure these aspects specifically. Methods With results from previous studies, 69 nursing generations-oriented items were created in English, translated into Italian and Finnish, and pretested to form the basis of an instrument that was tested between September and October 2014 on a sample of Finnish and Italian nurses ( n = 1302) using principal component analysis and Cronbach's alpha. Results Fifty-four items and eight components (Cronbach's α range: 0.61-0.81) were identified in the instrument: (1) conflicts between generations; (2) patient safety view; (3) relationships between generations; (4) working as a multigenerational team; (5) orientation to change; (6) presenteeism and job propensity; (7) intention to leave, and (8) flexibility and availability. Conclusions The instrument showed acceptable preliminary psychometric properties and satisfactory internal consistency. Implications for nursing management The Multidimensional Nursing Generations Questionnaire is a useful tool to measure the characteristics of different generations of nurses and to develop management strategies tailored to those generations. Aim To test an explanatory model of nurses' intention to report adverse drug reactions in hospital settings, based on the theory of planned behaviour. Background Under-reporting of adverse drug reactions is an important problem among nurses. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected with the adverse drug reporting nurses' questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the factor validity of the adverse drug reporting nurses' questionnaire, and structural equation modelling was used to test the explanatory model. Results The convenience sample comprised 500 Italian hospital nurses (mean age = 43.52). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the factor validity of the adverse drug reporting nurses' questionnaire. The structural equation modelling showed a good fit with the data. Nurses' intention to report adverse drug reactions was significantly predicted by attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control ( R² = 0.16). Conclusions The theory of planned behaviour effectively explained the mechanisms behind nurses' intention to report adverse drug reactions, showing how several factors come into play. Implications for nursing management In a scenario of organisational empowerment towards adverse drug reaction reporting, the major predictors of the intention to report are support for the decision to report adverse drug reactions from other health care practitioners, perceptions about the value of adverse drug reaction reporting and nurses' favourable self-assessment of their adverse drug reaction reporting skills. Background: The Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder index (WOOS) has been introduced as a disease-specific quality of life measurement in patients with glenohumeral arthritis. The aim of the present study was to perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the English version of the WOOS to Italian and to assess its validity, reliability and responsiveness in patients with glenohumeral joint osteoarthritis treated conservatively.Material and Methods: The adaptation process was carried out following the simplified Guillemin criteria. The English version was translated into Italian by two bilingual orthopaedic surgeons and then translated back into English by two different bilingual orthopaedic surgeons. The original version was compared with the back-translation. The questionnaire was prospectively administered to 30 patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis at baseline and again after 5 days for retest reliability. After 6 months of conservative treatment, the responsiveness of the questionnaire was assessed in a subsample of 20 patients. The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05.Results: The interclass correlation coefficient between test and retest of the WOOS was 0.99 (P < 0.001). Pearson's correlation coefficient between the WOOS and disability of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) preoperatively was 0.73 (P < 0.01) and the correlation between the changes of score for the WOOS and DASH was 0.75 (P < 0.01). There were no floor or ceiling effects. Responsiveness, calculated by standardized response mean, was 1.1 and effect size was 1.3.Conclusions: The Italian version of the WOOS questionnaire has shown to be equivalent to its English version and demonstrated good validity, reliability and responsiveness to conservative treatment of glenohumeral osteoarthritis.Level Of Evidence: Level II. Background: The impact of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is considerable in many aspects of the life. Over the last decades, many efforts have been conducted to develop useful tools for the evaluation of disease activity. However, since the development of Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society Health Index (ASAS HI), no specific freely questionnaire to describe the overall picture of impairments, limitations and restrictions in activities or social partecipation were available. The aims of this study were to test the feasibility, reliability, and construct validity of the ASAS HI, in order to compare its clinimetric properties with the current available measures of disease activity, functional limitation and health status assessments in patients with axSpA.Methods: A cohort of 140 consecutive axSpA has been the object of study. The feasibility has been determined by the percentage of patients who were able to complete the questionnaire by themselves and by the time employed to fill the ASAS HI. The reliability has been evaluated performing a test-retest of the questionnaire within a week. The construct validity was examined in three ways. First, we examined construct convergent validity by correlating the scores of the ASAS HI with the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS)-CRP/ESR, the Simplified Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (SASDAS), the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), the Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life scale (ASQoL) and the EuroQoL Five Dimensional Questionnaire (EQ-5D). Secondly, we have created patient groups based on the patients' activity ranks (ASDAS-CRP and SASDAS categorisation) within the cohort to assess discriminative accuracy. Additionally, to distinguish patients with active and non-active disease and to assess their respective cut-off points values, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used. Thirdly, we analyzed the contribution of demographic (age, sex, and disease duration) and clinical variables (number of comorbidity and disease activity by ASAS-CRP) to the attainment of an ASAS HI condition by stepwise logistic regression.Results: The mean time to complete the ASAS HI was 1.92 ± 0.76 min. Overall, the ASAS HI questionnaire was correctly completed by the majority of the patients (99,2 %). Coefficients of agreement between ASAS HI scores on first and second administrations were excellent and all items showed very good agreement (ICC = 0.976; range 0.966 to 0.982). The ASAS HI was correlated significantly with all other comparator scores (p <0.0001). The highest correlations were seen with ASQoL (rho 0.784; p <0.0001), BASFI (rho 0.671; p <0.0001) and SASDAS (rho 0.640; p <0.0003). On categorizing patients into different cut-off point of disease activity, with respect to the both ASDAS-CRP and SASDAS, ASAS HI scores were highly significantly different between the four categories (p <0.0001). An ASAS HI value of 4.0 resulted the cut-off with the highest combination of sensitivity and specificity (82.6 % and 86.3 %, respectively) to define the inactive disease. In the logistic regression model, high disease activity measured by ASDAS-CRP (coefficient 2.39; p <0.0001), was the only independent variable associated with ASAS HI.Conclusions: The results reported in this study confirm the feasibility, reliability and validity of the ASAS HI in Italian patients with axSpA. Even if ASAS HI is not a disease activity index, of particular interest appears the cut-off value of 4.0, under which could be defined the inactive disease. The article discusses a study whose purpose is the Italian validation of the Salford-Scott Nursing Values Questionnaires which is already used in other countries. Topics discussed include the questionnaire's aim of measuring the value direction of nursing contexts, the administration of the questionnaire where students were asked to evaluate indications and elements of the questionnaire and the modification of personal and professional values of nursing students.
