Quantum measurements severely disrupt the dynamic evolution of a quantum system by collapsing the probabilistic wavefunction. This principle can be leveraged to control quantum states by effectively freezing the system's dynamics or enhancing transitions between states. These are known as the quantum Zeno effect (ZE) and anti-Zeno effect (AZE), respectively. However, it remains elusive how quantum measurements affect topological states, which are famous for their robustness against disorder and perturbations. Here, we theoretically and experimentally show that the dynamic evolution of topological boundary states (TBSs) can be controlled by quantum-like measurement (QLM). Our work is based on spatially modulated topological acoustic waveguide systems with varying parameters that adiabatically pump the TBS across the bulk to the opposite boundary. Therein, the QLM is emulated using a perturbation to the Hamiltonian known as the Zeno subspace. With the help of quantum metrics, we identify the general conditions for ZE and AZE, and experimentally demonstrate their effects in freezing and accelerating the tunneling of the TBS. Furthermore, we discover a tunneling mechanism by varying the strength of the QLM. Non-Hermitian effects have emerged as a new paradigm for the manipulation of phases of matter that profoundly changes our understanding of non-equilibrium systems, introducing novel concepts such as exceptional points and spectral topology, as well as exotic phenomena such as non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSEs). Most existing studies, however, focus on non-Hermitian eigenstates, whereas dynamic properties of non-Hermitian systems have been discussed only very recently, predicting unexpected phenomena such as wave self-healing, chiral Zener tunneling, and the dynamic NHSEs that are not yet confirmed in experiments. Here, we report the first experimental observation of rich non-Hermitian skin dynamics using tunable one-dimensional nonreciprocal double-chain mechanical systems with glide-time symmetry. Remarkably, dynamic NHSEs are observed with various dynamic behaviors in different dynamic phases, revealing the intriguing nature of these phases that can be understood via the generalized Brillouin zone and the related concepts. Moreover, the observed tunable non-Hermitian skin dynamics and amplifications, the bulk unidirectional wave propagation, and the boundary wave trapping provide promising ways to guide, trap, and amplify waves in a controllable and robust way. Our findings unveil the fundamental aspects and open a new pathway toward non-Hermitian dynamics, which will fertilize the study of non-equilibrium phases of matter and give rise to novel applications in information processing.

Lines of exceptional points are robust in the 3-dimensional non-Hermitian parameter space without requiring any symmetry. However, when more elaborate exceptional structures are considered, the role of symmetry becomes critical. One such case is the exceptional chain (EC), which is formed by the intersection or osculation of multiple exceptional lines (ELs). In this study, we investigate a non-Hermitian classical mechanical system and reveal that a symmetry intrinsic to second-order dynamical equations, in combination with the source-free principle of ELs, guarantees the emergence of ECs. This symmetry can be understood as a non-Hermitian generalized latent symmetry, which is absent in prevailing formalisms rooted in first-order Schr\"odinger-like equations and has largely been overlooked so far. We experimentally confirm and characterize the ECs using an active mechanical oscillator system. Moreover, by measuring eigenvalue braiding around the ELs meeting at a chain point, we demonstrate the source-free principle of directed ELs that underlies the mechanism for EC formation. Non-Hermitian theory is a theoretical framework that excels at describing open systems. It offers a powerful tool in the characterization of both the intrinsic degrees of freedom (DOFs) of a system and the interactions with the external environment. The non-Hermitian framework consists of mathematical structures that are fundamentally different from those of Hermitian theories. These structures not only underpin novel approaches for precisely tailoring non-Hermitian systems for applications but also give rise to topologies not found in Hermitian systems. In this paper, we comprehensively review non-Hermitian topology by establishing its relationship with the behaviors of complex eigenvalues and biorthogonal eigenvectors. Special attentions are given to exceptional points - branch-point singularities on the complex eigenvalue manifolds that exhibit non-trivial topological properties. We also discuss recent developments in non-Hermitian band topology, such as the non-Hermitian skin effect and non-Hermitian topological classifications

Eigenstates of a non-Hermitian system exist on complex Riemannian manifolds, with multiple sheets connecting at branch cuts and exceptional points (EPs). These eigenstates can evolve across different sheets, a process that naturally corresponds to state permutation. Here, we report the first experimental realization of non-Abelian permutations in a three-state non- Hermitian system. Our approach relies on the stroboscopic encircling of two different exceptional arcs (EAs), which are smooth trajectories of order-2 EPs appearing from the coalescence of two adjacent states. The non-Abelian characteristics are confirmed by encircling the EAs in opposite sequences. A total of five non-trivial permutations are experimentally realized, which together comprise a non-Abelian group. Non-Hermitian systems can produce branch singularities known as exceptional points (EPs). Different from singularities in Hermitian systems, the topological properties of an EP can involve either the winding of eigenvalues that produces a discriminant number (DN) or the eigenvector holonomy that generates a Berry phase. The multiplicity of topological invariants also makes non-Hermitian topology richer than its Hermitian counterpart. Here, we study a parabola-shaped trajectory formed by EPs with both theory and acoustic experiments. By obtaining both the DNs and Berry phases through the measurement of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we show that the EP trajectory endows the parameter space with a non-trivial fundamental group consisting of two non-homotopic classes of loops. Our findings not only shed light on exotic non-Hermitian topology but also provide a route for the experimental characterization of non-Hermitian topological invariants.

Exceptional points (EPs) associated with a square-root singularity have been found in many non-Hermitian systems. In most of the studies, the EPs found are isotropic meaning that the same singular behavior is obtained independent of the direction from which they are approached in the parameter space. In this work, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the existence of an anisotropic EP in an acoustic system that shows different singular behaviors when the anisotropic EP is approached from different directions in the parameter space.
