Non-Hermitian systems generically have complex energies, which may host topological structures, such as links or knots. While there has been great progress in experimentally engineering non-Hermitian models in quantum simulators, it remains a significant challenge to experimentally probe complex energies in these systems, thereby making it difficult to directly diagnose complex-energy topology. Here, we experimentally realize a two-band non-Hermitian model with a single trapped ion whose complex eigenenergies exhibit the unlink, unknot or Hopf link topological structures. Based on non-Hermitian absorption spectroscopy, we couple one system level to an auxiliary level through a laser beam and then experimentally measure the population of the ion on the auxiliary level after a long period of time. Complex eigenenergies are then extracted, illustrating the unlink, unknot or Hopf link topological structure. Our work demonstrates that complex energies can be experimentally measured in quantum simulators via non-Hermitian absorption spectroscopy, thereby opening the door for exploring various complex-energy properties in non-Hermitian quantum systems, such as trapped ions, cold atoms, superconducting circuits or solid-state spin systems., 12 pages, 8 figures

Tensor networks are efficient representations of high-dimensional tensors with widespread applications in quantum many-body physics. Recently, they have been adapted to the field of machine learning, giving rise to an emergent research frontier that has attracted considerable attention. Here, we study the trainability of tensor-network based machine learning models by exploring the landscapes of different loss functions, with a focus on the matrix product states (also called tensor trains) architecture. In particular, we rigorously prove that barren plateaus (i.e., exponentially vanishing gradients) prevail in the training process of the machine learning algorithms with global loss functions. Whereas, for local loss functions the gradients with respect to variational parameters near the local observables do not vanish as the system size increases. Therefore, the barren plateaus are absent in this case and the corresponding models could be efficiently trainable. Our results reveal a crucial aspect of tensor-network based machine learning in a rigorous fashion, which provide a valuable guide for both practical applications and theoretical studies in the future., Comment: 7+21 pages

Non-Hermiticity has widespread applications in quantum physics. It brings about distinct topological phases without Hermitian counterparts, and gives rise to the fundamental challenge of phase classification from both theoretical and experimental aspects. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of unsupervised learning of non-Hermitian topological phases with the nitrogen-vacancy center platform. In particular, we implement the non-Hermitian twister model, which hosts peculiar knotted topological phases, with a solid-state quantum simulator consisting of an electron spin and a nearby $^{13}$C nuclear spin in a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. By tuning the microwave pulses, we efficiently generate a set of experimental data without phase labels. Furthermore, based on the diffusion map method, we cluster this set of experimental raw data into three different knotted phases in an unsupervised fashion without a priori knowledge of the system, which is in sharp contrast to the previously implemented supervised learning phases of matter. Quantum simulation of 1D relativistic quantum mechanics has been achieved in well-controlled systems like trapped ions, but properties like spin dynamics and response to external magnetic fields that appear only in higher dimensions remain unexplored. Here we simulate the dynamics of a 2D Weyl particle. We show the linear dispersion relation of the free particle and the discrete Landau levels in a magnetic field, and we explicitly measure the spatial and spin dynamics from which the conservation of helicity and properties of antiparticles can be verified. Our work extends the application of an ion trap quantum simulator in particle physics with the additional spatial and spin degrees of freedom.

Quantum many-body scarred systems host special non-thermal eigenstates that support periodic revival dynamics and weakly break the ergodicity. Here, we study the quantum information scrambling dynamics in quantum many-body scarred systems, with a focus on the "PXP" model. We use the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) and Holevo information as measures of the information scrambling, and apply an efficient numerical method based on matrix product operators to compute them up to 41 spins. We find that both the OTOC and Holevo information exhibit a linear light cone and periodic oscillations inside the light cone for initial states within the scarred subspace, which is in sharp contrast to thermal or many-body localized systems. The periodic revivals of OTOCs and Holevo information signify unusual breakdown of quantum chaos and are not equivalent to the revival dynamics of state fidelity or local observables studied in the previous literature. To explain the formation of the linear light cone structure, we provide a perturbation-type calculation based on a phenomenological model. In addition, we demonstrate that the OTOC and Holevo information dynamics of the "PXP" model can be measured using the Rydberg-atom quantum simulators with current experimental technologies, and numerically identify the measurable signatures using experimental parameters., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

The Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH) model is a fundamental many-body model for light-matter interaction. As a leading platform for quantum simulation, the trapped ion system has realized the JCH model for two to three ions. Here, we report the quantum simulation of the JCH model using up to 32 ions. We verify the simulation results even for large ion numbers by engineering low excitations and thus low effective dimensions; then we extend to 32 excitations for an effective dimension of 2^{77}, which is difficult for classical computers. By regarding the phonon modes as baths, we explore Markovian or non-Markovian spin dynamics in different parameter regimes of the JCH model, similar to quantum emitters in a structured photonic environment. We further examine the dependence of the non-Markovian dynamics on the effective Hilbert space dimension. Our Letter demonstrates the trapped ion system as a powerful quantum simulator for many-body physics and open quantum systems.

Capsule networks, which incorporate the paradigms of connectionism and symbolism, have brought fresh insights into artificial intelligence. The capsule, as the building block of capsule networks, is a group of neurons represented by a vector to encode different features of an entity. The information is extracted hierarchically through capsule layers via routing algorithms. Here, we introduce a quantum capsule network (dubbed QCapsNet) together with an efficient quantum dynamic routing algorithm. To benchmark the performance of the QCapsNet, we carry out extensive numerical simulations on the classification of handwritten digits and symmetry-protected topological phases, and show that the QCapsNet can achieve an enhanced accuracy and outperform conventional quantum classifiers evidently. We further unpack the output capsule state and find that a particular subspace may correspond to a human-understandable feature of the input data, which indicates the potential explainability of such networks. Our work reveals an intriguing prospect of quantum capsule networks in quantum machine learning, which may provide a valuable guide towards explainable quantum artificial intelligence., Comment: 7 pages (main text) + 8 pages (supplementary information), 8 figures

Classification and identification of different phases and the transitions between them is a central task in condensed matter physics. Machine learning, which has achieved dramatic success in a wide range of applications, holds the promise to bring unprecedented perspectives for this challenging task. However, despite the exciting progress made along this direction, the reliability of machine-learning approaches in experimental settings demands further investigation. Here, with the nitrogen-vacancy center platform, we report a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of adversarial examples in learning topological phases. We show that the experimental noises are more likely to act as adversarial perturbations when a larger percentage of the input data are dropped or unavailable for the neural network-based classifiers. We experimentally implement adversarial examples which can deceive the phase classifier with a high confidence, while keeping the topological properties of the simulated Hopf insulators unchanged. Our results explicitly showcase the crucial vulnerability aspect of applying machine learning techniques in experiments to classify phases of matter, which can benefit future studies in this interdisciplinary field.

Quantum simulation provides important tools in studying strongly correlated many-body systems with controllable parameters. As a hybrid of two fundamental models in quantum optics and in condensed matter physics, the Rabi-Hubbard model demonstrates rich physics through the competition between local spin-boson interactions and long-range boson hopping. Here we report an experimental realization of the Rabi-Hubbard model using up to $16$ trapped ions and present a controlled study of its equilibrium properties and quantum dynamics. We observe the ground-state quantum phase transition by slowly quenching the coupling strength, and measure the quantum dynamical evolution in various parameter regimes. With the magnetization and the spin-spin correlation as probes, we verify the prediction of the model Hamiltonian by comparing theoretical results in small system sizes with experimental observations. For larger-size systems of $16$ ions and $16$ phonon modes, the effective Hilbert space dimension exceeds $2^{57}$, whose dynamics is intractable for classical supercomputers., 6 pages, 3 figures + 13 pages, 10 figures

Logical qubit encoding and quantum error correction (QEC) protocols have been experimentally demonstrated in various physical systems with multiple physical qubits, generally without reaching the break-even point, at which the lifetime of the quantum information exceeds that of the single best physical qubit within the logical qubit. Logical operations are challenging, owing to the necessary non-local operations at the physical level, making bosonic logical qubits that rely on higher Fock states of a single oscillator attractive, given their hardware efficiency. QEC that reaches the break-even point and single logical-qubit operations have been demonstrated using the bosonic cat code. Here, we experimentally demonstrate repetitive QEC approaching the break-even point of a single logical qubit encoded in a hybrid system consisting of a superconducting circuit and a bosonic cavity using a binomial bosonic code. This is achieved while simultaneously maintaining full control of the single logical qubit, including encoding, decoding and a high-fidelity universal quantum gate set with 97% average process fidelity. The corrected logical qubit has a lifetime 2.8 times longer than that of its uncorrected counterpart. We also perform a Ramsey experiment on the corrected logical qubit, reporting coherence twice as long as for the uncorrected case. Repeated error correction creates a logical qubit encoded in the hybrid state of a superconducting circuit and a bosonic cavity, which is shown to be fully controllable under a universal single-qubit gate set.

Trapped ions constitute one of the most promising systems for implementing quantum computing and networking. For large-scale ion-trap-based quantum computers and networks, it is critical to have two types of qubits, one for computation and storage, while the other for auxiliary operations like runtime qubit detection, sympathetic cooling, and repetitive entanglement generation through photon links. Dual-type qubits have previously been realized in hybrid systems using two ion species, which, however, introduces significant experimental challenges for laser setup, gate operations as well as the control of the fraction and positioning of each qubit type within an ion crystal. Here we solve these problems by implementing two coherently-convertible qubit types using the same ion species. We encode the qubits into two pairs of clock states of the 171Yb+ ions, and achieve fast and high-fidelity conversion between the two types using narrow-band lasers. We further demonstrate that operations on one qubit type, including sympathetic laser cooling, gates and qubit detection, have crosstalk errors less than 0.03% on the other type, well below the error threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Deep quantum neural networks may provide a promising way to achieve quantum learning advantage with noisy intermediate scale quantum devices. Here, we use deep quantum feedforward neural networks capable of universal quantum computation to represent the mixed states for open quantum many-body systems and introduce a variational method with quantum derivatives to solve the master equation for dynamics and stationary states. Owning to the special structure of the quantum networks, this approach enjoys a number of notable features, including the absence of barren plateaus, efficient quantum analogue of the backpropagation algorithm, resource-saving reuse of hidden qubits, general applicability independent of dimensionality and entanglement properties, as well as the convenient implementation of symmetries. As proof-of-principle demonstrations, we apply this approach to both one-dimensional transverse field Ising and two-dimensional $J_1-J_2$ models with dissipation, and show that it can efficiently capture their dynamics and stationary states with a desired accuracy., 5.5pages, 4figures, plus supplementary materials

Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC), recently being the center of discussion on quantum chaos, are a tool to understand the information scrambling in different phases of quantum many-body systems. We propose a disordered ladder spin model, XX-ladder, which can be designed in a scalable cold atom setup to detect OTOC with a novel sign reversal protocol for the evolution backward in time. We study both the clean and disordered limits of XX-ladder and characterize different phases (ergodic-MBL) of the model based on the decay properties of OTOCs. Emergent effective lightcone shows sublinear behaviour, while the butterfly cones drastically differ from the lightcone via demonstrating superlinear behaviour. Based on our results, one can observe how the information scrambling changes in the transition from well-studied 1D spin models to unexplored 2D spin models in a local setting., 11 pages, 8+4 figures

Ion trap systems are a leading platform for large scale quantum computers. Trapped ion qubit crystals are fully-connected and reconfigurable, owing to their long range Coulomb interaction that can be modulated with external optical forces. However, the spectral crowding of collective motional modes could pose a challenge to the control of such interactions for large numbers of qubits. Here, we show that high-fidelity quantum gate operations are still possible with very large trapped ion crystals, simplifying the scaling of ion trap quantum computers. To this end, we present analytical work that determines how parallel entangling gates produce a crosstalk error that falls off as the inverse cube of the distance between the pairs. We also show experimental work demonstrating entangling gates on a fully-connected chain of seventeen $^{171}{\rm{Yb}}^{+}$ ions with fidelities as high as $97(1)\%$., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

The realization of high-fidelity quantum gates in a multiqubit system, with a typical target set at $99.9%$, is a critical requirement for the implementation of fault-tolerant quantum computation. To reach this level of fidelity, one needs to carefully analyze the noises and imperfections in the experimental system and optimize the gate operations to mitigate their effects. Here, we consider one of the leading experimental systems for the fault-tolerant quantum computation, ions in an anharmonic linear Paul trap, and optimize entangling quantum gates using segmented laser pulses with the assistance of all the collective transverse phonon modes of the ion crystal. We present detailed analyses of the effects of various kinds of intrinsic experimental noises as well as errors from imperfect experimental controls. Through explicit calculations, we find the requirements on these relevant noise levels and control precisions to achieve the targeted high fidelity of $99.9%$ for the entangling quantum gates in a multi-ion crystal.

Thermalization of isolated quantum systems is a long-standing fundamental problem where different mechanisms are proposed over time. We contribute to this discussion by classifying the diverse quench dynamical behaviours of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, which includes well-defined quantum collapse and revivals, thermalization, and certain special cases. These special cases are either nonthermal equilibration with no revival but a collapse even though the system has finite degrees of freedom or no equilibration with no collapse and revival. Given that some integrable systems are already shown to demonstrate the weak form of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), we determine the regions where ETH holds and fails in this integrable isolated quantum system. The reason behind both thermalizing and nonthermalizing behaviours in the same model under different initial conditions is linked to the discussion of `rare' nonthermal states existing in the spectrum. We also propose a method to predict the collapse and revival time scales and how they scale with the number of particles in the condensate. We use a sudden quench to drive the system to non-equilibrium and hence the theoretical predictions given in this paper can be probed in experiments., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

The local phonon modes in a Coulomb crystal of trapped ions can represent a Hubbard system of coupled bosons. We selectively prepare single excitations at each site and observe free hopping of a boson between sites, mediated by the long-range Coulomb interaction between ions. We then implement phonon blockades on targeted sites by driving a Jaynes-Cummings interaction on individually addressed ions to couple their internal spin to the local phonon mode. The resulting dressed states have energy splittings that can be tuned to suppress phonon hopping into the site. This new experimental approach opens up the possibility of realizing large-scale Hubbard systems from the bottom up with tunable interactions at the single-site level., 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. There are several known schemes for entangling trapped ion quantum bits for large-scale quantum computation. Most are based on an interaction between the ions and external optical fields, coupling internal qubit states of trapped-ions to their Coulomb-coupled motion. We show that ultracold atoms can be controlled in multi-band optical lattices through spatially periodic Raman pulses for investigation of a class of strongly correlated physics related to the Kondo problem. The underlying dynamics of this system is described by a spin-dependent fermionic or bosonic Kondo-Hubbard lattice model even if we have only spin-independent atomic collision interaction. We solve the bosonic Kondo-Hubbard lattice model through a mean-field approximation, and the result shows a clear phase transition from the ferromagnetic superfluid to the Kondo-signet insulator at the integer filling., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We propose a scheme to realize quantum networking of superconducting qubits based on the opto-mechanical interface. The superconducting qubits interact with the microwave photons, which then couple to the optical photons through the opto-mechanical interface. The interface generates a quantum link between superconducting qubits and optical flying qubits with tunable pulse shapes and carrier frequencies, enabling transmission of quantum information to other superconducting or atomic qubits. We show that the scheme works under realistic experimental conditions and it also provides a way for fast initialization of the superconducting qubits under 1 K instead of 20 mK operation temperature., 6.1 pages, 4 figures, accepted for PRA

We prove that all inseparable Gaussian states of two modes can be distilled into maximally entangled pure states by local operations. Using this result we show that a bipartite Gaussian state of arbitrarily many modes can be distilled if and only if its partial transpose is not positive.

We demonstrate high fidelity entangling quantum gates within a chain of five trapped ion qubits by optimally shaping optical fields that couple to multiple collective modes of motion. We individually address qubits with segmented optical pulses to construct multipartite entangled states in a programmable way. This approach enables both high fidelity and fast quantum gates that can be scaled to larger qubit registers for quantum computation and simulation.

We propose a method to generate massive entanglement in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate from an initial product state through an adiabatic sweep of the magnetic field across a quantum phase transition induced by competition between the spin-dependent collision interaction and the quadratic Zeeman effect. The generated many-body entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable entanglement depth in the proximity of the Dicke state. We show that the scheme is robust to practical noise and experimental imperfection and under realistic conditions it is possible to generate genuine entanglement for hundreds of atoms.

Spin squeezed states are a class of entangled states of spins that have practical applications to precision measurements. In recent years spin squeezing with one-axis twisting (OAT) has been demonstrated experimentally with spinor BECs with more than 10^3 atoms. Although the noise is below the standard quantum limit, the OAT scheme cannot reduce the noise down to the ultimate Heisenberg limit. Here we propose an experimentally feasible scheme based on optimized quantum control to greatly enhance the performance of OAT to approach the Heisenberg limit, requiring only an OAT Hamiltonian and the use of several coherent driving pulses. The scheme is robust against technical noise and can be readily implemented for spinor BECs or trapped ions with current technology., 4 pages, 6 figures

Separate addressing of individual qubits is a challenging requirement for scalable quantum computation, and crosstalk between operations on neighboring qubits remains as a significant source of noise for current experimental implementation of multi-qubit platforms. We propose a scheme based on spatial refocusing from interference of several coherent laser beams to significantly reduce the crosstalk noise for any type of quantum gates. A general framework is developed for the spatial refocusing technique, in particular with practical Gaussian beams, and we show under typical experimental conditions, the crosstalk-induced infidelity of quantum gates can be reduced by several orders of magnitude with a moderate cost of a few correction laser beams., 7 pages, 4 figures

The electron spin state of a singly charged semiconductor quantum dot has been shown to form a suitable single qubit for quantum computing architectures with fast gate times. A key challenge in realizing a useful quantum dot quantum computing architecture lies in demonstrating the ability to scale the system to many qubits. In this Letter, we report an all optical experimental demonstration of quantum entanglement between a single electron spin confined to a single charged semiconductor quantum dot and the polarization state of a photon spontaneously emitted from the quantum dot's excited state. We obtain a lower bound on the fidelity of entanglement of $0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$, which is 84% of the maximum achievable given the timing resolution of available single photon detectors. In future applications, such as measurement-based spin-spin entanglement which does not require sub-nanosecond timing resolution, we estimate that this system would enable near ideal performance. The inferred (usable) entanglement generation rate is $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. This spin-photon entanglement is the first step to a scalable quantum dot quantum computing architecture relying on photon (flying) qubits to mediate entanglement between distant nodes of a quantum dot network.

We propose an experimental scheme to observe prethermalization and dynamical transition in one-dimensional XY spin chain with long range interaction and inhomogeneous lattice spacing, which can be readily implemented with the recently developed trapped-ion quantum simulator. Local physical observables are found to relax to prethermal values at intermediate time scale, followed by complete relaxation to thermal values at much longer time. The physical origin of prethermalization is explained by spotting a non-trivial structure in lower half of the energy spectrum. The dynamical behavior of the system is shown to cross difference phases when the interaction range is continuously tuned, indicating the existence of dynamical phase transition., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Single electron spins confined to InAs quantum dots (QDs) can serve as qubits for quantum information applications. We report QD spin-photon entanglement useful for scaling a QD spin architecture via intermediate photonic qubits.

We demonstrate entanglement between an InAs quantum dot (QD) electron spin qubit and a photon. This valuable quantum information resource can be used to mediate spin-spin entanglement between distant nodes of a QD spin network.

Sharp quantum phase transitions typically require a large system with many particles. Here we show that for a frustrated fully-connected Ising spin network represented by trapped atomic ions, the competition between different spin orders leads to rich phase transitions whose sharpness scales exponentially with the number of spins. This unusual finite-size scaling behavior opens up the possibility of observing sharp quantum phase transitions in a system of just a few trapped ion spins., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We perform a quantum simulation of the Ising model with a transverse field using a collection of three trapped atomic ion spins. By adiabatically manipulating the Hamiltonian, we directly probe the ground state for a wide range of fields and form of the Ising couplings, leading to a phase diagram of magnetic order in this microscopic system. The technique is scalable to much larger numbers of trapped ion spins, where phase transitions approaching the thermodynamic limit can be studied in cases where theory becomes intractable., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We show that the noise threshold for optical quantum computing can be significantly improved by using the EPR-type of photon source. In this implementation, the detector efficiency $\eta_{d}$ is required to be larger than 50%, and the source efficiency $\eta_{s}$ can be an arbitrarily small positive number. This threshold compares favorably with the implementation using the single-photon source, where one requires the combined efficiency $\eta_{d}\eta_{s}>2/3$. We demonstrate tunable spin-spin couplings between trapped atomic ions, mediated by laser forces on multiple transverse collective modes of motion. A ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}$-type Ising interaction is realized between quantum bits stored in the ground hyperfine clock states of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{+}$ ions. We demonstrate entangling gates and tailor the spin-spin couplings with two and three trapped ions. The use of closely spaced transverse modes provides a new class of interactions relevant to quantum computing and simulation with large collections of ions in a single crystal.

We demonstrate a probabilistic entangling quantum gate between two distant trapped ytterbium ions. The gate is implemented between the hyperfine "clock" state atomic qubits and mediated by the interference of two emitted photons carrying frequency encoded qubits. Heralded by the coincidence detection of these two photons, the gate has an average output state fidelity of 89+/-2%. This entangling gate together with single qubit operations is sufficient to generate large entangled cluster states for scalable quantum computing.

We teleport quantum information between two distant ytterbium ions trapped in different vacuum chambers separated by one meter. Full state tomography shows that the heralded probabilistic process employed has a fidelity of 90%.

We study through controlled numerical simulation the ground state properties of spin-polarized strongly interacting fermi gas in an anisotropic optical lattice, which is described by an effective one-dimensional general Hubbard model with particle correlated hopping rate. We show that the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type of state, while enhanced by a negative correlated hopping rate, can be completely suppressed by positive particle correlated hopping, yielding to an unusual magnetic phase even for particles with on-site attractive interaction We also find several different phase separation patterns for these atoms in an inhomogeneous harmonic trap, depending on the correlated hopping rate.

We propose a scheme to demonstrate fractional statistics of anyons in an exactly solvable lattice model proposed by Kitaev that involves four-body interactions. The required many-body ground state, as well as the anyon excitations and their braiding operations, can be conveniently realized through \textit{dynamic}laser manipulation of cold atoms in an optical lattice. Due to the perfect localization of anyons in this model, we show that a quantum circuit with only six qubits is enough for demonstration of the basic braiding statistics of anyons. This opens up the immediate possibility of proof-of-principle experiments with trapped ions, photons, or nuclear magnetic resonance systems., 4 pages, 3 figures

We propose a scheme for efficient construction of graph states using realistic linear optics, imperfect photon source and single-photon detectors. For any many-body entanglement represented by tree graph states, we prove that the overall preparation and detection efficiency scales only polynomially with the size of the graph, no matter how small the efficiencies for the photon source and the detectors., 4 pages, 3 figures

We propose a scheme to implement quantum controlled SWAP gates by directing single-photon pulses to a two-sided cavity with a single trapped atom. The resultant gates can be used to realize quantum fingerprinting and universal photonic quantum computation. We demonstrate single qubit density matrix tomography in a single semiconductor quantum dot system through consecutive phase sensitive rotations of the qubit via ultrafast coherent optical excitations. The result is important for quantifying gate operations in quantum information processing in the quantum dot systems as well as demonstrating consecutive arbitrary qubit rotations.

We propose a detection method for ultracold atoms which allows reconstruction of the full one-particle and two-particle correlation functions from the measurements. The method is based on Fourier sampling of the time-of-flight images through two consecutive impulsive Raman pulses. For applications of this method, we discuss a few examples, including detection of phase separation between superfluid and Mott insulators, various types of spin or superfluid orders, entanglement, exotic or fluctuating orders., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures
